In this paper, we present the results of an observational search for gas phase urea [(NH2)2CO] observed toward the Sgr B2(N-LMH) region. We show data covering urea transitions from ∼100 GHz to 250 GHz from five different observational facilities: the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland-Association (BIMA) Array, the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA), the NRAO 12 m telescope, the IRAM 30 m telescope, and the Swedish-ESO Submillimeter Telescope (SEST). The results show that the features ascribed to urea can be reproduced across the entire observed bandwidth and all facilities by best-fit column density, temperature, and source size parameters which vary by less than a factor of two between observations merely by adjusting for telescope-specific parameters. Interferometric observations show that the emission arising from these transitions is cospatial and compact, consistent with the derived source sizes and emission from a single species. Despite this evidence, the spectral complexity of both (NH2)2CO and of Sgr B2(N) makes the definitive identification of this molecule challenging. Context. A lower-than-solar elemental nitrogen content has been demonstrated for several comets, including 1P/Halley and 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P/C-G) with independent in situ measurements of volatile and refractory budgets. The recently discovered semi-refractory ammonium salts in 67P/C-G are thought to be the missing nitrogen reservoir in comets. Aims. The thermal desorption of ammonium salts from cometary dust particles leads to their decomposition into ammonia (NH3) and a corresponding acid. The NH3/H2O ratio is expected to increase with decreasing heliocentric distance with evidence for this in near-infrared observations. NH3 has been claimed to be more extended than expected for a nuclear source. Here, the aim is to constrain the NH3/H2O ratio in comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) during its July 2020 passage. Methods. OH emission from comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) was monitored for 2 months with the Nançay Radio Telescope (NRT) and observed from the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) on 24 July and 11 August 2020. Contemporaneously with the 24 July 2020 OH observations, the NH3 hyperfine lines were targeted with GBT. From the data, the OH and NH3 production rates were derived directly, and the H2O production rate was derived indirectly from the OH. Results. The concurrent GBT and NRT observations allowed the OH quenching radius to be determined at (5.96 ± 0.10) × 104 km on 24 July 2020, which is important for accurately deriving Q(OH). C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) was a highly active comet with Q(H2O) ≈ 2 × 1030 mol s−1 one day before perihelion. The 3σ upper limit for QNH3 / QH2O is < 0.29% at 0.7 au from the Sun. Conclusions. The obtained NH3/H2O ratio is a factor of a few lower than measurements for other comets at such heliocentric distances. The abundance of NH3 may vary strongly with time depending on the amount of water-poor dust in the coma. Lifted dust can be heated, fragmented, and super-heated; whereby, ammonium salts, if present, can rapidly thermally disintegrate and modify the NH3/H2O ratio. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the first survey of molecular emission from cometary volatiles using standalone Atacama Compact Array (ACA) observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) toward comet C/2015 ER61 (PanSTARRS) carried out on UT 2017 April 11 and 15, shortly after its April 4 outburst. These measurements of HCN, CS, CH3OH, H2CO, and HNC (along with continuum emission from dust) probed the inner coma of C/2015 ER61, revealing asymmetric outgassing and discerning parent from daughter/distributed source species. This work presents spectrally integrated flux maps, autocorrelation spectra, production rates, and parent scale lengths for each molecule and a stringent upper limit for CO. HCN is consistent with direct nucleus release in C/2015 ER61, whereas CS, H2CO, HNC, and potentially CH3OH are associated with distributed sources in the coma. Adopting a Haser model, parent scale lengths determined for H2CO (L p ∼ 2200 km) and HNC (L p ∼ 3300 km) are consistent with previous work in comets, whereas significant extended source production (L p ∼ 2000 km) is indicated for CS, suggesting production from an unknown parent in the coma. The continuum presents a point-source distribution with a flux density implying an excessively large nucleus, inconsistent with other estimates of the nucleus size. It is best explained by the thermal emission of slowly moving outburst ejectas, with total mass 5â€"8 Ă— 1010 kg. These results demonstrate the power of the ACA for revealing the abundances, spatial distributions, and locations of molecular production for volatiles in moderately bright comets such as C/2015 ER61. Unidentified infrared emission bands are ubiquitous in many astronomical sources. These bands are widely, if not unanimously, attributed to collective emissions from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules, yet no single species of this class has been identified in space. Using spectral matched filtering of radio data from the Green Bank Telescope, we detected two nitrile-group–functionalized PAHs, 1- and 2-cyanonaphthalene, in the interstellar medium. Both bicyclic ring molecules were observed in the TMC-1 molecular cloud. In this paper, we discuss potential in situ gas-phase PAH formation pathways from smaller organic precursor molecules. Amide molecules produced in space could play a key role in the formation of biomolecules on a young planetary object. However, the formation and chemical network of amide molecules in space is not well understood. In this work, Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations are used to study a number of amide(-like) molecules toward the high-mass star-forming region NGC 6334I. The first detections of cyanamide (NH2CN), acetamide (CH3C(O)NH2), and N-methylformamide (CH3NHCHO) are presented for this source. These are combined with analyses of isocyanic acid (HNCO) and formamide (NH2CHO), and a tentative detection of urea (carbamide; NH2C(O)NH2). Abundance correlations show that most amides are likely formed in related reactions occurring in ices on interstellar dust grains in NGC 6334I. However, in an expanded sample of sources, large abundance variations are seen for NH2CN that seem to depend on the source type, which suggests that the physical conditions within the source heavily influence the production of this species. The rich amide inventory of NGC 6334I strengthens the case that interstellar molecules can contribute to the emergence of biomolecules on planets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report a search for the diatomic hydrides SiH, PH, and FeH along the line of sight toward the chemically rich circumstellar envelopes of IRC+10216 and VY Canis Majoris. These molecules are thought to form in high-temperature regions near the photospheres of those stars, and may then further react via gas-phase and dust-grain interactions leading to more complex species, but have yet to be constrained by observation. We used the German Receiver for Astronomy at Terahertz Frequencies spectrometer on the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy to search for rotational emission lines of these molecules in four spectral windows ranging from 600 to 1500 GHz. Although none of the targeted species was detected in our search, we report their upper limit abundances in each source and discuss how they influence the current understanding of hydride chemistry in dense circumstellar media. We attribute the nondetections of these hydrides to their compact source sizes, high barriers of formation, and proclivity to react with other molecules in the winds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic nitrogen heterocycles are thought to be widespread throughout the universe, because these classes of molecules are probably responsible for the unidentified infrared bands, a set of emission features seen in numerous Galactic and extragalactic sources. Despite their expected ubiquity, astronomical identification of specific aromatic molecules has proven elusive. We present the discovery of benzonitrile (c-C6H5CN), one of the simplest nitrogen-bearing aromatic molecules, in the interstellar medium. We observed hyperfine-resolved transitions of benzonitrile in emission from the molecular cloud TMC-1. Simple aromatic molecules such as benzonitrile may be precursors for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon formation, providing a chemical link to the carriers of the unidentified infrared bands. Bell et al. reported the first detection of the cyanopolyyne HC11N towards the cold dark cloud TMC-1; no subsequent detections have been reported towards any source. Additional observations of cyanopolyynes and other carbon-chain molecules towards TMC-1 have shown a log-linear trend between molecule size and column density, and in an effort to further explore the underlying chemical processes driving this trend, we have analysed Green Bank Telescope observations of HC9N and HC11N towards TMC-1. Although we find an HC9N column density consistent with previous values, HC11N is not detected and we derive an upper limit column density significantly below that reported in Bell et al. Using a state-of-the-art chemical model, we have investigated possible explanations of non-linearity in the column density trend. Despite updating the chemical model to better account for ion-dipole interactions, we are not able to explain the non-detection of HC11N, and we interpret this as evidence of previously unknown carbon-chain chemistry. We propose that cyclization reactions may be responsible for the depleted HC11N abundance, and that products of these cyclization reactions should be investigated as candidate interstellar molecules. Life on Earth relies on chiral molecules--that is, species not superimposable on their mirror images. This manifests itself in the selection of a singlemolecular handedness, or homochirality, across the biosphere. We present the astronomical detection of a chiral molecule, propylene oxide (CH3CHCH2O), in absorption toward the Galactic center. Propylene oxide is detected in the gas phase in a cold, extended molecular shell around the embedded, massive protostellar clusters in the Sagittarius B2 star-forming region. We present a 30-50 GHz survey of Sagittarius B2(N) conducted with the Australia Telescope Compact Array with ~5-10 arcsec resolution. This work releases the survey data and demonstrates the utility of scripts that perform automated spectral line fitting on broad-band line data. We describe the line-fitting procedure, evaluate the performance of the method, and provide access to all data and scripts. The scripts are used to characterize the spectra at the positions of three H II regions, each with recombination line emission and molecular line absorption. Towards the most line-dense of the three regions characterized in this work, we detect ~500 spectral line components of which ~90 percent are confidently assigned to H and He recombination lines and to 53 molecular species and their isotopologues. The data reveal extremely sub-thermally excited molecular gas absorbing against the continuum background at two primary velocity components. Based on the line radiation over the full spectra, the molecular abundances and line excitation in the absorbing components appear to vary substantially towards the different positions, possibly indicating that the two gas clouds are located proximate to the star-forming cores instead of within the envelope of Sgr B2. Furthermore, the spatial distributions of species including CS, OCS, SiO, and HNCO indicate that the absorbing gas components likely have high UV-flux. Finally, the data contain line-of-sight absorption by ~15 molecules observed in translucent gas in the Galactic Centre, bar, and intervening spiral arm clouds, revealing the complex chemistry and clumpy structure of this gas. The results of a Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO) search for l-C3H+, first detected by Pety et al. in observations towards the Horsehead photodissociation region (PDR), are presented. A total of 39 sources were observed in the 1 mm window. Evidence of emission from l-C3H+ is found in only a single source – the Orion Bar PDR region – which shows a rotational temperature of 178(13) K and a column density of 7(2) × 1011 cm−2. In the remaining sources, upper limits of ∼1011–1013 cm−2 are found. These results are discussed in the context of guiding future observational searches for this species. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Pety et al. have reported the detection of eight transitions of a closed-shell, linear molecule (B11244) in observations toward the Horsehead photodissociation region (PDR), which they attribute to the l-C3H+ cation. Recent high-level ab initio calculations have called this assignment into question; the anionic C3H– molecule has been suggested as a more likely candidate. Here, we examine observations of the Horsehead PDR, Sgr B2(N), TMC-1, and IRC+10216 in the context of both l-C3H+ and C3H–. We find no observational evidence of Ka = 1 lines, which should be present were the carrier indeed C3H–. Additionally, we find a strong anticorrelation between the presence of known molecular anions and B11244 in these regions. Finally, we discuss the formation and destruction chemistry of C3H– in the context of the physical conditions in the regions. Pety et al. recently reported the detection of several transitions of an unknown carrier in the Horsehead PDR and attribute them to l-C3H+. Here, we have tested the predictive power of their fit by searching for, and identifying, the previously unobserved J = 1-0 and J = 2-1 transitions of the unknown carrier (B11244) toward Sgr B2(N) in data from the publicly available PRIMOS project. Also presented here are observations of the J = 6-5 and J = 7-6 transitions toward Sgr B2(N) and Sgr B2(OH) using the Barry E. Turner Legacy Survey and results from the Kaifu et al. survey of TMC-1. We calculate an excitation temperature and column density of B11244 of ~10 K and ~1013 cm-2 in Sgr B2(N) and ~79 K with an upper limit of ⩽1.5 × 1013 cm-2 in Sgr B2(OH) and find trace evidence for the cation's presence in TMC-1. Finally, we present spectra of the neutral species in both Sgr B2(N) and TMC-1, and comment on the robustness of the assignment of the detected signals to l-C3H+. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Observations of 14 rotational transitions of hydroxylamine (NH2OH) using the NRAO 12 m telescope on Kitt Peak are reported toward IRC+10216, Orion KL, Orion S, Sgr B2(N), Sgr B2(OH), W3IRS5, and W51M. Although recent models suggest the presence of NH2OH in high abundance, these observations resulted in non-detection. Upper limits are calculated to be as much as six orders of magnitude lower than those predicted by models. Possible explanations for the lower-than-expected abundance are explored. Abstract: Preliminary Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) science verification data for a single pixel centered on the hot core of Orion KL (R. A.=05h 35m 14.35s, Dec=−05°22′35″ (J2000)) are available as this special issue on broadband spectroscopy is coming to press. As part of this verification process it is useful to compare simulations based on laboratory spectroscopy with ALMA results. This provides not only a test of instrumentation and analysis, but also a test of astrophysical assumptions such as local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and the temperature variations within telescope beams. However, these tests are spectroscopically limited because it is well known that astrophysical spectra contain large numbers of unknown lines, many of which are presumably due to unanalyzed rotational spectra in excited vibrational states of a relatively few molecules. To address this issue we have previously discussed the use of broadband complete experimental spectra (CES) that is obtained from the analysis of several hundred intensity calibrated spectra taken over a range of temperatures. Methyl formate presents a challenge for the conventional chemical mechanisms assumed to guide interstellar organic chemistry. Previous studies of potential formation pathways for methyl formate in interstellar clouds ruled out gas-phase chemistry as a major production route, and more recent chemical kinetics models indicate that it may form efficiently from radical--radical chemistry on ice surfaces. Yet, recent chemical imaging studies of methyl formate and molecules potentially related to its formation suggest that it may form through previously unexplored gas-phase chemistry. Motivated by these findings, two new gas-phase ion-molecule formation routes are proposed and characterized using electronic structure theory with conformational specificity. The proposed reactions, add-cetalyzed Fisher esterification and methyl cation transfer, both produce the less stable trans-conformational isomer of protonated methyl formate in relatively high abundance under the kinetically controlled conditions relevant to interstellar chemistry. Gas-phase neutral methyl formate can be produced from its protonated counterpart through either a dissociative electron recombination reaction or a proton transfer reaction to a molecule with larger proton affinity. Retention (or partial retention) of the conformation in these neutralization reactions would yield trans-methyl formate in an abundance that exceeds predictions under thermodynamic equilibrium at typical interstellar temperatures of ≤ 100 K. For this reason, this conformer may prove to be an excellent probe of gas-phase chemistry in interstellar clouds. Motivated by new theoretical predictions, the rotational spectrum of trans-methyl formate has been measured for the first time in the laboratory, and seven lines have now been detected in the interstellar medium using the publicly available PRIMOS survey from the NRAO Green Bank Telescope. The microwave spectrum of the sugar alcohol 1,3-propanediol (CH2OHCH2CH2OH) has been measured over the frequency range 6.7 to 25.4 GHz using both cavity and broadband microwave spectrometers. The tunneling splittings from two structurally chiral conformer (enantiomeric) pairs of 1,3-propanediol have been fully resolved and assigned. The tunneling frequency of the lowest-energy inverting pair is 5.4210(28) MHz and found to increase by more than 7-fold to 39.2265(24) MHz for the higher-energy form. From the observed selection rules, three possible inversion pathways along the two OH concerted torsional modes have been identified and theoretically investigated. Quantum chemical calculations (MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level) have been performed on the eight lowest-energy forms and three transition-state structures. Two of these pathways cross through CStransition states associated with each of the enantiomeric pairs and a third common pathway of lowest energy has a transition state of C1symmetry. For only the C1pathway is good agreement found between predictions from a 1D WKB analysis and the observed tunneling frequencies and 7-fold ratio. The conformer interconversion barrier is calculated to be about 3-fold smaller than that for the inversion suggesting the wave functions of the four inversion levels are partially delocalized over the four surface minima. Abstract: The microwave spectrum of the sugar alcohol 1,2-propanediol (CH3CHOHCH2OH) has been measured over the frequency range 6.5–25.0GHz with several pulsed-beam Fourier-transform microwave spectrometers. Seven conformers of 1,2-propanediol have been assigned and ab initio electronic structure calculations of the 10 lowest energy forms have been calculated. Stark effect measurements were carried out on several of the lowest energy conformers to provide accurate determinations of the dipole moment components and assist in conformer assignment. Recently, Lattelais et al. have interpreted aggregated observations of molecular isomers to suggest that there exists a “minimum energy principle,” such that molecular formation will favor more stable molecular isomers for thermodynamic reasons. To test the predictive power of this principle, we have fully characterized the spectra of the three isomers of C3H2O toward the well-known molecular region Sgr B2(N). Evidence for the detection of the isomers cyclopropenone (c-C3H2O) and propynal (HCCCHO) is presented, along with evidence for the non-detection of the lowest zero-point energy isomer, propadienone (CH2CCO). We interpret these observations as evidence that chemical formation pathways, which may be under kinetic control, have a more pronounced effect on final isomer abundances than thermodynamic effects such as the minimum energy principle. The rotational spectrum of the higher-energy trans-conformational isomer of methyl formate has been assigned for the first time using several pulsed-jet Fourier transform microwave spectrometers in the 6-60 GHz frequency range. This species has also been sought toward the Sagittarius B2(N) molecular cloud using the publicly available PRIMOS survey from the Green Bank Telescope. We detect seven absorption features in the survey that coincide with laboratory transitions of trans-methyl formate, from which we derive a column density of 3.1 (+2.6, –1.2) × 1013 cm–2 and a rotational temperature of 7.6 ± 1.5 K. This excitation temperature is significantly lower than that of the more stable cis conformer in the same source but is consistent with that of other complex molecular species recently detected in Sgr B2(N). The difference in the rotational temperatures of the two conformers suggests that they have different spatial distributions in this source. As the abundance of trans-methyl formate is far higher than would be expected if the cis and trans conformers are in thermodynamic equilibrium, processes that could preferentially form trans-methyl formate in this region are discussed. We also discuss measurements that could be performed to make this detection more certain. This manuscript demonstrates how publicly available broadband radio astronomical surveys of chemically rich molecular clouds can be used in conjunction with laboratory rotational spectroscopy to search for new molecules in the interstellar medium.
