Soil salinity adversely affects plant growth and development, reducing the yield of most crops, including wheat. The highly salt-tolerant wheat germplasm lines W4909 and W4910 were derived from a cross between two moderately salt-tolerant lines, the Chinese Spring (CS)/Thinopyrum junceum disomic addition line AJDAj5 (AJ) and the Ph-inhibitor line (Ph-I) derived from CS/Aegilops speltoides. Molecular markers for gene introgressions in W4909 and W4910 were not reported. Four sequence-tagged site (STS) molecular markers of Ph-I were developed and tested in the above-mentioned lines and the F2 progenies of the two crosses, Anza (AZ) × 4740 (sib of W4910) and Yecora Rojo (YR) × 4728 (sib of W4909). Additionally, homogeneity was assessed in several derivatives of W4909, 4728, W4910, and 4740 using the four markers. The four STS markers are not associated with salt tolerance, but they provide an indication of the transfer of chromatin in 3B chromosome of Ae. speltoides via Ph-I. Moreover, salt tolerance and leaf sodium concentration were determined in CS, AJ, Ph-I, 7151 (progeny of W4909), 7157 (progeny of W4910), AZ, and YR under salt treatment and control. Surprisingly, AJ had the lowest leaf sodium concentration under the control and salt treatment, indicating greater sodium exclusion than that in CS, AZ, and YR. This low level of leaf sodium concentration was heritable from 4740 to its hybrid progenies. On the other hand, the higher leaf sodium concentration, indicative of the tissue tolerance to salinity in Ph-I, had been inherited by both W4909 and W4910 and then transmitted to their hybrid progenies. One offspring line each in both W4909 and W4910 (7762 and 7159, respectively) were homozygous for the three molecular markers and lacked the marker psr1205 of Su1-Ph1 gene, making them better materials than the original lines for future research on, for example, whole-genome sequencing and gene mining. Wave runup, the excess water level above mean sea level, has been measured using different techniques with varying degrees of precision and associated practical limitations. This critical parameter, typically included in coastal assessment studies, varies temporally and spatially and depends on variables that include beach characteristics and nearshore hydrodynamics. Access to continuous datasets, using efficient mechanisms can assist resource-limited regions, such as Caribbean small-island developing states (SIDS), in overcoming coastal resilience obstacles. Experiments were conducted at University College London (UCL) and the University of the West Indies (UWI), which were designed to explore the temporal behaviour of the water surface within the bed during runup events. The experiments encompassed linear waves impacting a static porous bed (UCL) and a moveable granular beach (UWI), with pressure sensors buried at the base of each beach. The analyses showed that the averaged values of the time-varying water elevations within the bed, when spatially presented, produced a quadratic or cubic polynomial fit, where the curves' stationary points were accurate indicators of the location of the maximum runup position at the surface of the bed. In this way, an arrangement of buried pressure sensors can be used as an efficient means to accurately produce a continuous time series of maximum runup positions. AbstractObjective: The objective of this systematic review was to examine current evidence regarding the associations between dietary quality and mental well-being indicators (stress, anxiety, and/or depression) in college students, with a secondary aim of characterizing the relationship between overall dietary quality and academic performance. Methods: Searches were performed, and the PRISMA guidelines were followed for reporting the methods and results. Results: Twelve observational studies were included and reviewed showing high dietary quality was associated with: low stress (four studies), high stress (one study), and no significant association (two studies); low depression (three studies) and no significant association (two studies) and low anxiety (two studies), high anxiety (one study), and no significant associations (two studies). Results showed weak positive associations between overall dietary quality and academic performance. Conclusions: These results are consistent with other studies of dietary quality and non-clinical mental health outcomes; more researched is needed to determine potential associations. After Ukraine, the need for robust mechanisms to rebuild trust and ensure transparency among states would become more pressing than ever. Renowned for its transparency and trust-building capabilities, the Open Skies Treaty (OST) could serve as a cornerstone for post-conflict security arrangements. This article examines the potential for revisiting the Open Skies framework to adapt to innovative surveillance technologies, assist with verification of arms control agreements, and enhance diplomatic efforts to foster a collaborative deterrence between former enemies and include agreeable neighboring states. Utilizing a qualitative methodology involving the analysis of public statements, policy documents, and related scholarship, the study underscores the OST's critical role in establishing a transparent military environment. Artificial intelligence (AI) uses sophisticated algorithms to "learn" from large volumes of data. This could be used to optimise recruitment of blood donors through predictive modelling of future blood supply, based on previous donation and transfusion demand. We sought to assess utilisation of predictive modelling and AI blood establishments (BE) and conducted predictive modelling to illustrate its use. A BE survey of data modelling and AI was disseminated to the International Society of Blood transfusion members. Additional anonymzed data were obtained from Italy, Singapore and the United States (US) to build predictive models for each region, using January 2018 through August 2019 data to determine likelihood of donation within a prescribed number of months. Donations were from March 2020 to June 2021. Ninety ISBT members responded to the survey. Predictive modelling was used by 33 (36.7%) respondents and 12 (13.3%) reported AI use. Forty‐four (48.9%) indicated their institutions do not utilise predictive modelling nor AI to predict transfusion demand or optimise donor recruitment. In the predictive modelling case study involving three sites, the most important variable for predicting donor return was number of previous donations for Italy and the US, and donation frequency for Singapore. Donation rates declined in each region during COVID‐19. Throughout the observation period the predictive model was able to consistently identify those individuals who were most likely to return to donate blood. The majority of BE do not use predictive modelling and AI. The effectiveness of predictive model in determining likelihood of donor return was validated; implementation of this method could prove useful for BE operations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Most people with a stoma worry about leakage, and a quarter experience leakage of stomal effluent outside the baseplate on a monthly basis. Leakage has additional physical and psychosocial consequences, for instance, peristomal skin complications, feeling unable to cope, and self-isolation. Method: An interventional, single-arm, multi-centre study was undertaken in the United Kingdom to evaluate a novel digital leakage notification system for ostomy care, including a support service (=test product) for 12 weeks in patients with a recent stoma formation (≤9 months). Patients completed questionnaires at baseline and after 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 weeks, evaluating leakage episodes, Ostomy Leak Impact (tool containing three domains), and patient self-management (by PAM-13). Additionally, mental well-being (by WHO-5) and health-related quality of life (QoL) (by EQ-5D-5L) were assessed. Outcomes between baseline and final evaluation were compared by generalised linear and linear mixed models. Results: 92 patients (ITT population) with a mean age of 49.4 years (range 18–81 years) were recruited. Of these, 80% had an ileostomy, and 53% were female. After 12 weeks of using the test product, a significant decrease in mean episodes of leakage outside the baseplate (1.57 versus 0.93, p < 0.046) was observed. Ostomy Leak Impact scores improved across all three domains (p < 0.001), indicating less embarrassment, increased engagement in social activities, and increased control. Patient self-management also improved significantly (PAM-13 score: ∆6.6, p < 0.001), as did the WHO-5 well-being index (∆8.0, p < 0.001). Lastly, EQ-5D-5L profile scores tended to improve (p = 0.075). Conclusions: A new digital leakage notification system demonstrated strong improvements to patients' stoma self-care, mental well-being, and QoL. The article explores the leadership style and personal characteristics of Brigadier General Robin Olds, a legendary fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force. It applies military historian John Keegan's model of theatrical heroic leadership to examine Old's leadership style during his command of the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW) in Southeast Asia. Keegan claimed the effective combat leader displays important qualities including kinship, prescription, and sanction.

In chordates, the central nervous system arises from precursors that have distinct developmental and transcriptional trajectories. Anterior nervous systems are ontogenically associated with ectodermal lineages while posterior nervous systems are associated with mesoderm. Taking advantage of the well-documented cell lineage of ascidian embryos, we asked to what extent the transcriptional states of the different neural lineages become similar during the course of progressive lineage restriction. We performed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) analyses on hand-dissected neural precursor cells of the two distinct lineages, together with those of their sister cell lineages, with a high temporal resolution covering five successive cell cycles from the 16-cell to neural plate stages. A transcription factor binding site enrichment analysis of neural specific genes at the neural plate stage revealed limited evidence for shared transcriptional control between the two neural lineages, consistent with their different ontogenies. Nevertheless, PCA analysis and hierarchical clustering showed that, by neural plate stages, the two neural lineages cluster together. Consistent with this, we identified a set of genes enriched in both neural lineages at the neural plate stage, including miR-124, Celf3.a, Zic.r-b, and Ets1/2. Altogether, the current study has revealed genome-wide transcriptional dynamics of neural progenitor cells of two distinct developmental origins. Our scRNA-seq dataset is unique and provides a valuable resource for future analyses, enabling a precise temporal resolution of cell types not previously described from dissociated embryos. Although the back handspring step out (BHS) is a foundational skill in balance beam routines, it can be performed using different take-off techniques. Back injuries are highly prevalent in the BHS due to the combination of high spine extension and joint loading. However, it is unclear which technique minimises injury risk or leads to better BHS performance. The purpose of the study was to identify techniques used for the BHS take-off and analyse the resulting BHS performance. Gymnasts were found to use either: Simultaneous Flexion—trunk and knees flex at the same time; Sequential Flexion—trunk reaches its maximum flexion followed by knee flexion; or Double-Bounce—knees and trunk both flex and then the knees extend and flex again. To assess performance, point deductions were calculated, and dynamic balance, ground reaction forces (GRFs) and relevant joint angles were analysed. The techniques had no differences in point deductions or dynamic balance, but there were differences in GRFs, spine extension and knee flexion. The Sequential Flexion technique had the lowest spine extension, which potentially reduces back injuries and the lowest knee flexion, which is a BHS requirement. A 48-year-old female presented to the emergency department with severe fatigue. Admission laboratory test results were hemoglobin 6.6 g/dL, platelet count 287,000/μL, and white blood cell count 25,200/μL. Lactate dehydrogenase was elevated at 898 U/L, haptoglobin was markedly decreased (< 31 mg/dL), indirect bilirubin was elevated (5.3 mg/dL), and the absolute reticulocyte count was low at 0.0050/μL. A sample was sent to the immunohematology reference laboratory. The direct antiglobulin test immunoglobulin G was negative; C3 was 1+. All cells were reactive at immediate spin phase, indirect antiglobulin testing (IAT) with polyethylene glycol, with low ionic strength saline, neat, prewarm, and in the solid phase. All cells were nonreactive at IAT-ficin. Additional testing included a cold antibody titer that was 1:4096 and thermal amplitude studies demonstrating reactivity of 2+ at 37°C. These results were consistent with a clinically significant anti-Pr and cold agglutinin disease (CAD). Although rituximab is effective in autoimmune hemolytic anemia, this may take weeks. The patient was treated with pegcetacoplan, a pegylated peptide that targets C3 inhibiting hemolysis. The patient was discharged on day 29 with a hemoglobin of 8 g/dL. Unlike prior studies that have examined the research productivity to develop various rank-order metrics of particular scholars or institutions, we seek to determine ways in which criminology and criminal justice faculty at the top 21 doctoral programs publish their research. To account for a potential diversity in faculty publication productivity, our study considers various outlets for faculty publications—journal articles, books, and book chapters—and develops composite profiles of publication productivity. Our intention is not to rank faculty and determine academic stars, but to distinguish groups of faculty similar in their patterns of faculty productivity. We analyze the publications of over 90% of all tenured and tenure-track faculty employed by the top 21 U.S. doctoral programs in criminology and criminal justice. Our latent profile analysis yielded five distinct profiles of productivity among the faculty in the top doctoral programs. Our objective in this paper is to examine the growth of the price of farm milk quotas in Canada, to shed light on their patterns of growth within the last 15 years. Our quota price model is based on the Gordon growth model, supplemented by some important characteristics of the milk quota market. Our explanatory variables include the quota rental price, interest rate, and expectations of both price and quantity growth, all for the province of Alberta over the 2009–2023 time period. Our economic model of quota prices performs well by giving results with the predicted signs for all variables in our model and high levels of statistical significance except for expectations of quantity allocations when entered separately. The model has two variants, one with the expectation of growth in quota rents and the other with the expectation of growth in the quota asset price. When performing the back handspring step out (BHS) on the balance beam, most gymnasts use one of three take-off techniques: Simultaneous Flexion, Sequential Flexion or Double-Bounce. However, it remains unclear which technique results in the lowest muscle demand that could help reduce energy expenditure and fatigue and improve overall performance. The purpose of this study was to use musculoskeletal modelling and simulation to quantify the influence of take-off technique on muscle demand (integrated muscle power) and contributions to the critical biomechanical functions of whole-body angular momentum generation and control and trunk propulsion (mechanical power delivered to the trunk). Simulations of female gymnasts (n = 21; age: 15.3 ± 3.6) were generated using their self-selected BHS technique on a balance beam. Differences in muscle demand were small across the techniques. However, the vasti, ankle plantarflexors, gluteus maximus and hamstring muscle groups experienced large demand during the BHS take-off. The gluteus medius and ankle plantarflexors were crucial for maintaining balance. The hamstrings, ankle plantarflexors and vasti generated needed momentum and delivered power to the trunk. These results provide targets for muscle strengthening and conditioning to improve balance control and increase the height and distance of the BHS, which is needed before adding additional skills in combination. (Hetero)biaryls are fundamental building blocks in the pharmaceutical industry and rapid access to these scaffolds is imperative for the success of numerous medicinal chemistry campaigns. Herein, a highly general, mild, and chemoselective reductive cross‐electrophile coupling between (hetero)aryl iodides and heteroaryl bromides is reported. By employing more reactive (hetero)aryl halides, a broad range of successful substrates (45 examples) were identified. The reaction was also found to be chemoselective for C(sp2)‐C(sp2) bond formation between (hetero)aryl iodides and bromides over (hetero)aryl chlorides, which were generally inert under the described reaction conditions. The efficiency of the procedure is also further demonstrated in parallel synthesis library format, on gram scale, as well as in the formal synthesis of Ruxolitinib, a potent JAK inhibitor. Background and Objectives: A plasma transfusion dose should be weight‐based (10–20 mL/kg), which equates to three to four units in an average‐sized adult; therefore, the transfusion of single units under most circumstances is sub‐therapeutic. Materials and Methods: This retrospective observational study examined the prevalence of single‐unit plasma transfusion in adults within a 12‐hospital system from 1 January 2018, to 31 December 2019. Results: During the study period, 5791 patients received plasma transfusions. The overall prevalence of single‐unit plasma was 17.1% for 988 patients. The majority, 3047 (52.6%), occurred at one hospital, 2132 (36.9%) among five hospitals and 612 (10.7%) at the remaining six hospitals. Cardiac and gastrointestinal (GI)/transplant transfused 2707 (46.8%), combined respiratory, neurological, orthopaedic and congenital/dermatology/other comprised 2133 (36.9%) of the six hospitals that transfused less than 200 patients, four (66.7%) transfused single units above the overall prevalence. Conclusion: In this hospital system, more than one in six patients received a transfusion of a single plasma unit. Six of the 12 hospitals had 89.5% of the patients who were transfused plasma. Six service lines transfused 83.7% of all patients receiving plasma. Hospitals that infrequently transfused plasma were more likely to under‐dose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two alternative hypotheses may explain the origin of Astrophytum coahuilense. One hypothesis is that A. coahuilense is an ancient diploid hybrid derived from interbreeding between A. capricorne and A. myriostigma. An alternative is that A. coahuilense arose via allopatric speciation and its similarity to A. myriostigma in vegetative characters is due to convergent evolution. The two hypotheses are tested, applying univariate analysis and Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling analysis to morphological datasets. Univariate analysis, which is based on 13 vegetative and 10 reproductive characters, shows that the morphology of A. coahuilense is complex, consisting of a combination of vegetative and reproductive characters shared with both A. capricorne and A. myriostigma as well as several intermediate traits. Furthermore, the morphology of A. coahuilense lacks unique, fixed characteristics. Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling analysis of 15 characters (three vegetative and 12 reproductive traits) produced a two-dimensional scatterplot in which the cluster representing A. coahuilense occupies a position intermediate between the clusters of the two parental species along Dimension 1. Thus, both analyses support the hypothesis that Astrophytum coahuilense originated through hybridization between A. capricorne and A. myriostigma. The Aeroacoustics Laboratory in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Penn State currently serves several areas of experimental research. Most notable in the laboratory is the Anechoic Chamber of which the Aeroacoustics Wind Tunnel is an integral part. In recent years the dominant areas of research have included model aircraft exhaust jets and model rotors for helicopter applications involving detailed noise experiments. In the jet noise area, the applications have included aircraft in both flyover and take-off configurations. In the flyover application the air flow surrounding the exhaust jet has a significant effect on the radiated noise and must be simulated to produce experimental results that will be most useful in preliminary design of noise suppression applications. The Aeroacoustics Wind Tunnel at Penn State serves the purpose for this simulation. During aircraft take-off, the aircraft airspeed is in a range exceeding 250 ft per second, or Mach number of over M = 0.22. In the years preceding 2022, the velocity of the free jet flow of the Penn State facility was limited to less than 200 ft/sec. This paper reports on a project to design upgrades to the existing wind tunnel to improve the test section flow velocity to values closer to the 250 ft/sec target. The approach began with a preliminary design of the return flow ducting to convert the open jet, open return wind tunnel to a closed return tunnel. The concept is to make use of the flow energy in the exhaust of the tunnel to boost the input energy to the inlet fan that drives the flow to the test section. An integral part of the preliminary design involved making use of an upgraded flow analysis computer code to predict the gain in test section velocity of the new facility. For the available horsepower of two fans in the facility, the configurations of the existing and upgraded wind tunnel were entered into this analysis code based on a quasi-one-dimensional formulation. The code included empirical data formulated to include the various shapes of the components of the tunnels. The relative flow velocities in each section used simple incompressible continuity to calculate all velocities in the component sections. The average dynamic pressure in each section is calculated from the flow (constant) density and the velocity squared. Each section had a non-dimensional pressure loss parameter calculated from empirical data (from the relevant literature). The basic code (using the Excel algorithms) was based on a predictor-corrector concept in which the calculation was initialized with the estimated velocity and pressure of the flow at the entrance to the test section. The loss in each following section is estimated to determine the loss in the total pressure and the cumulated loss compared to the gains made at the two fans in the circuit. The initial guess is adjusted based on the total pressure value at the end of the circuit. During the related experiments, measurements of the total and dynamic pressure were performed at several joints between sections and compared to the values predicted in the analysis code. Various settings of the horsepower of the drive fans were used and the results were compared to flow measurements for the tunnel configurations (predominantly for the open return and closed return tunnel setups available before and after the upgrade project.) Objectives: The question of a declining non‐Hispanic white (NHW) population has sparked debate in the United States. In examining this question, three bodies of research have emerged. One group reports that the decline is real, a second argues that it is an illusion, and the third provides evidence that the decline is concentrated within socio‐economic segments of the NHW population. We use the third groups' insight as the starting point for our research objective. Methods: In conjunction with data from Census Bureau sources, we use a series of Regression Models in this inquiry. Results: Our results show that the decline of the NHW population is real and related to factors embedded in the institutional anomie theory (IAT) framework. Conclusions: We conclude that the IAT framework is a suitable approach for examining the question of NHW population decline. However, we suggest that future research consider refining our approach by: (1) using sub‐state areas as the units of analyses; (2) examining changes in the NHW population relative to lagged changes in the IAT framework at both the state and sub‐state levels; (3) placing our framework into an "algorithmic modeling approach" that employs machine learning; and (4) developing anomie predictors. Infection with the hepatitis delta virus (HDV), a unique RNA virus that requires hepatitis B virus (HBV) antigens for its assembly, replication, and transmission, causes severe viral hepatitis. Compared to HBV monoinfection, HDV infection increases the risk of severe liver disease, necessity for liver transplant, and mortality. Global HDV prevalence estimates vary from 5% to 15% among persons with HBV, but screening guidelines for HDV are inconsistent; some recommend risk-based screening, while others recommend universal screening for all people with HBV. Among primary care providers (PCPs) in the US, there is a lack of awareness and/or insufficient adherence to current recommendations for the screening of HDV infection and management of chronic HDV. Publications were obtained by conducting literature searches between July and August 2022 using the PubMed database and by manual searches of the retrieved literature for additional references. Information was synthesized to highlight HDV screening and management strategies for PCPs. Best practices for PCPs based on current guidelines and comanagement strategies for patients with HBV and HDV infection were summarized. We recommend universal screening for HDV in patients positive for hepatitis B surface antigen. Confirmed HDV infection should prompt evaluation by a liver specialist, if available, with whom the PCP can comanage the patient. PCPs should counsel patients on the expected course of the disease, lifestyle factors that may influence liver health, need for consistent disease monitoring and follow-up, and risk of disease transmission. Screening is suggested for sexual partners, household contacts, and family members, with HBV immunization recommended for those found to be susceptible. There are currently no US Food and Drug Administration-approved therapies for HDV infection; thus, management is limited to treatments for chronic HBV infection plus long-term monitoring of liver health. PCPs can be a valuable point of care for patients to access HDV/HBV screening, HBV immunization, and education, and can comanage patients with HBV and/or HDV infection. Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) infection only occurs in the presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. People with an HDV infection are at higher risk for severe liver disease, liver transplant, and death compared to those who only have an HBV infection. The estimated global prevalence of HDV infection ranges from 5% to 15% among people living with HBV. These measurements vary due to different study methods, inconsistent HDV screening guidelines, and patient risk factors for infection. In the US, primary care providers (PCPs) play an important role in improving community access to HDV information and testing. However, poor funding and inadequate resources have created a lack of awareness and insufficient adherence by PCPs to current recommendations for screening and management of HDV infection. This narrative review aims to fill this gap by providing an overview of HDV infection, patient risk factors, and practice guidelines for PCPs. The recommendations for PCPs in this review include providing universal screening for HDV to people with an HBV infection, especially those at high risk. PCPs can educate and comanage patients with liver specialists. Topics to discuss with patients include expected disease outcomes, lifestyle factors that may influence liver health, and the need for consistent follow-up appointments. Patient risk of disease transmission can also be discussed to identify sexual partners, household contacts, and family members who will need screening and HBV vaccination. This work reports on a pump–probe laser-based heating and sensing metrology to study the failure mechanisms of materials during extreme heat fluxes localized near surfaces, the localization of which is controlled by the focus of the laser beam and sensed by the reflection of a secondary probe laser. We focus the demonstration of these power density at failure tests on the damage mechanisms of commercially pure titanium metal during and after high heat fluxes induced from the absorbed laser energy. Using this steady-state thermoreflectance pump–probe metrology, a localized region of the material was irradiated at a low modulated frequency, while the average change in the thermoreflectance signal was monitored. We observe surface and cross-sectional oxidation of the titanium, revealing correlations between microstructural evolution events and shifts in thermoreflectance trends as a function of absorbed power density. Furthermore, the damage morphology was shown to be heavily influenced by the size of the heater (dictated by the radius of the pump laser beam), which controlled the relative degree of thermomechanical, melting, and oxidative decohesion failure mechanisms in the samples. The analysis of the temperature distribution coupled with the observed microstructural damage gives rise to a high-throughput experimental technique to induce desired deformation modes through cyclic thermal testing. Balance perturbation studies during walking have improved our understanding of balance control in various destabilizing conditions. However, it is unknown to what extent balance recovery strategies can be generalized across different types of mediolateral balance perturbations. Do similar mediolateral perturbations (foot placement versus surface translation) have similar effects on balance control and corresponding balance response strategies? Kinetic and kinematic data were previously collected during two separate studies, each with 15 young, healthy participants walking on an instrumented treadmill. In both studies, medial and lateral balance perturbations were applied at 80% of the gait cycle either by a treadmill surface translation or a pneumatic force applied to the swing foot. Differences in balance control (frontal plane whole body angular momentum) and balance response strategies (hip abduction moment, ankle inversion moment, center of pressure excursion and frontal plane trunk moment) between perturbed and unperturbed gait cycles were evaluated using statistical parametric mapping. Balance disruptions after foot placement perturbations were larger and sustained longer compared to surface translations. Changes in joint moment responses were also larger for the foot placement perturbations compared to the surface translation perturbations. Lateral hip, ankle, and trunk strategies were used to maintain balance after medial foot placement perturbations, while a trunk strategy was primarily used after surface translations. Surface and foot placement perturbations influence balance control and corresponding response strategies differently. Polysorbates 20 and 80 (PS20 and PS80) are added to many commercial biologic and vaccine pharmaceuticals. It is commonly known that these polysorbates undergo a radical oxidation mechanism; however, the identity of these radical intermediates has not been clearly determined. Furthermore, PS20 and PS80 differ by the presence of a lauric acid instead of an oleic acid, respectively. The oxidation of PS80 is thought to be centered around the double bond of the oleic acid even though PS20 also undergoes oxidation, making the mechanism of oxidation unclear for PS20. Using commercial stocks of PS20 and PS80 alkyl (R•), alkoxyl (C-O•) and peroxyl (C-OO•) radicals were detected by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy likely originating from radical-initiating species already present in the material. When dissolved in water, the peroxyl radicals (C-OO•) originally in the stocks were not detected but poly(ethylene oxide) radicals were. Fumarate hydratase deficient renal cell carcinoma (FHRCC) can exhibit a heterogenous immunoprofile. In the present case, a solitary 10.5 cm mixed cystic and solid left kidney tumor showed various growth patterns, involving renal sinus adipose tissue and the renal pelvis. Tumor cells showed prominent nucleoli and perinucleolar halos. Aberrant diffuse (>90%), strong, and membranous carbonic anhydrase 9 and variable GATA3 expression were present. Diagnostic loss of fumarate hydratase expression and 2-succinyl cysteine overexpression (cytoplasmic and nuclear) were identified. Carbonic anhydrase 9 and GATA3 expression in FHRCC is rarely reported in the literature, and may cause misdiagnosis of clear cell RCC and/or urothelial carcinoma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An experimental evaluation is presented of a two-equation model for the low frequency (< 25 kHz), large amplitude (> --> 100 % of mean) discharge oscillations exhibited by a 9-kW class magnetically shielded Hall thruster. The model is based on a theoretical treatment of the "breathing mode" oscillations in Hall thrusters (Barral and Peradzyński, "A new breath for the breathing mode," IEPC-2009-070) and includes governing equations for fluctuations in the discharge current and the spatially averaged neutral density in the thruster channel. The derivation of the governing equations is reviewed, and the key simplifying assumptions are formulated in terms of comparisons between the magnitudes of relative fluctuations in spatially averaged plasma properties. Experimental measurements are performed of these plasma properties at an operating condition of 300 V discharge voltage and 10 A discharge current. It is found that all quantities of interest such as drift speed, electric field, and temperature fluctuate on the timescale of the low frequency oscillations. However, the relative phasing of these properties combine in such that the key assumptions of the model are satisfied—all but the neutral density and discharge fluctuations can be neglected in the equations for neutral density and current oscillations. A physical interpretation of the validity of the assumptions is presented, and the model is discussed in the context of its extensibility to other operating conditions. The validated model forms the basis for a parametric study presented in Part II of mode transitions and the criterion for these transitions in a magnetically shielded Hall thruster. Lipids from milk fat globule membranes (MFGMs) and extracellular vesicles (EVs) are considered beneficial for cognitive development and human health. Milk-derived whey concentrates rich in these lipids are therefore used as ingredients in infant formulas to mimic human milk and in medical nutrition products to improve the metabolic fitness of adults and elderly people. In spite of this, there is no consensus resource detailing the multitude of lipid molecules in whey concentrates. To bridge this knowledge gap, we report a comprehensive and quantitative lipidomic resource of different whey concentrates. In-depth lipidomic analysis of acid, sweet, and buttermilk whey concentrates identified 5714 lipid molecules belonging to 23 lipid classes. The data show that the buttermilk whey concentrate has the highest level of fat globule-derived triacylglycerols and that the acid and sweet whey concentrates have the highest proportions of MFGM- and EV-derived membrane lipids. Interestingly, the acid whey concentrate has a higher level of cholesterol whereas sweet whey concentrate has higher levels of lactosylceramides. Altogether, we report a detailed lipid molecular compendium of whey concentrates and lay the groundwork for using in-depth lipidomic technology to profile the nutritional value of milk products and functional foods containing dairy-based concentrates. Two alternative hypotheses may explain the origin of Astrophytum coahuilense. One hypothesis is that A. coahuilense is an ancient diploid hybrid derived from interbreeding between A. capricorne and A. myriostigma. An alternative is that A. coahuilense arose via allopatric speciation and its similarity to A. myriostigma in vegetative characters is due to convergent evolution. The two hypotheses are tested, applying univariate analysis and Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling analysis to morphological datasets. Univariate analysis, which is based on 13 vegetative and 10 reproductive characters, shows that the morphology of A. coahuilense is complex, consisting of a combination of vegetative and reproductive characters shared with both A. capricorne and A. myriostigma as well as several intermediate traits. Furthermore, the morphology of A. coahuilense lacks unique, fixed characteristics. Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling analysis of 15 characters (three vegetative and 12 reproductive traits) produced a two-dimensional scatterplot in which the cluster representing A. coahuilense occupies a position intermediate between the clusters of the two parental species along Dimension 1. Thus, both analyses support the hypothesis that Astrophytum coahuilense originated through hybridization between A. capricorne and A. myriostigma. Objectives Multinucleated tumor cells (MTCs) in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) are not well understood. Methods Our study included ccRCC cases in a single institution between 2010 and 2019. We classified MTC as MTC with degenerative atypia (MTCD), MTC with no anaplasia (MTCNA), and MTC with anaplasia (MTCA). Clinicopathologic characteristics and outcomes were compared between MTC groups. Results In all, 92 of 256 people (36%) with ccRCC had MTC. People with ccRCC with MTCD and those with ccRCC but no MTC had similar clinicopathologic characteristics and outcomes. Also, MTCNA and MTCA were associated with larger tumor size, advanced pathologic tumor stage, higher World Health Organization/International Society of Urologic Pathologists nuclear grade, and higher metastatic potential (P  < .001 for each parameter). Overall, MTCA was associated with an increased rate of recurrence (P =.004), higher metastatic potential (P  < .001), and shorter time to metastasis (P =.033), regardless of tumor stage. Univariate Cox regression revealed MTCNA as a significant predictor of metastasis at 5 years (hazard ratio [HR], 4.171; 95% CI, 1.934-8.998); moreover, MTCA was a significant predictor of recurrence (HR, 5.723; 95% CI, 2.495-13.124), metastasis (HR, 12.024; 5.966-24.232), and death (HR, 5.661; 95% CI, 2.688-11.924) at 5 years. Drought monitoring and early detection have improved greatly in recent decades through the development and refinement of numerous indices and indicators. However, a lack of guidance, based on user experience, exists as to which drought-monitoring tools are most appropriate in a given location. This review paper summarizes the results of targeted user engagement and the published literature to improve the understanding of drought across North America and to enhance the utility of drought-monitoring tools. Workshops and surveys were used to assess and make general conclusions about the perceived performance of drought indicators, indices and impact information used for monitoring drought in the five main Köppen climate types (Tropical, Temperate, Continental, Polar Tundra, Dry) found across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. In Tropical, humid Temperate, and southerly Continental climates, droughts are perceived to be more short-term (less than 6 months) in duration rather than long-term (more than 6 months). In Polar Tundra climates, Dry climates, Temperate climates with dry warm seasons, and northerly Continental climates, droughts are perceived to be more long-term than short-term. In general, agricultural and hydrological droughts were considered to be the most important drought types. Drought impacts related to agriculture, water supply, ecosystem, and human health were rated to be of greatest importance. Users identified the most effective indices and indicators for monitoring drought across North America to be the U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM) and Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) (or another measure of precipitation anomaly), followed by the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) (or another satellite-observed vegetation index), temperature anomalies, crop status, soil moisture, streamflow, reservoir storage, water use (demand), and reported drought impacts. Users also noted the importance of indices that measure evapotranspiration, evaporative demand, and snow water content. Drought indices and indicators were generally thought to perform equally well across seasons in Tropical and colder Continental climates, but their performance was perceived to vary seasonally in Dry, Temperate, Polar Tundra, and warmer Continental climates, with improved performance during warm and wet times of the year. The drought indices and indicators, in general, were not perceived to perform equally well across geographies. This review paper provides guidance on when (time of year) and where (climate zone) the more popular drought indices and indicators should be used. The paper concludes by noting the importance of understanding how drought, its impacts, and its indicators are changing over time as the climate warms and by recommending ways to strengthen the use of indices and indicators in drought decision making. Blood donors and voluntary blood donations are essential for ensuring the blood supply that can be maintained by good patient blood management (PBM) practices. This review article explores the role of blood donation in PBM and highlights the importance of donor screening and selection processes in different regions worldwide. The donor health questionnaires and the focused physical examination guidelines have changed in the last decade to increase donor and recipient safety. This article also discusses the status of transfusion practices, including the challenges of ensuring a safe blood supply. Significant among these are the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the blood supply chain and the impact of an aging donor population, especially. Promoting autologous donations and other blood conservation strategies are suggested to mitigate these issues. The role of replacement donors and the upper age limit for voluntary blood donation may be decided based on the demography and donor pool. The involvement of C-suite executives is also critical in implementing and running a successful PBM program. Cutaneous melanoma is the deadliest skin cancer. Most have Ras-MAPK pathway (BRAFV600E or NRAS) mutations and highly effective targeted therapies exist; however, they and immune therapies are limited by resistance, in part driven by small GTPase (Rho and Rac) activation. To facilitate preclinical studies of combination therapies to provide durable responses, we describe the first mouse melanoma lines resistant to BRAF inhibitors. Treatment of mouse lines, YUMM1.7 and YUMMER, with vemurafenib (Vem), the BRAFV600E-selective inhibitor, resulted in high-level resistance (IC50 shifts 20–30-fold). Resistant cells showed enhanced activation of Rho and the downstream transcriptional coactivator, myocardin-related transcription factor (MRTF). Resistant cells exhibited increased stress fibers, nuclear translocation of MRTF-A, and an increased MRTF-A gene signature. Pharmacological inhibition of the Rho/MRTF pathway using CCG-257081 reduced viability of resistant lines and enhanced sensitivity to Vem. Remarkably, co-treatment of parental lines with Vem and CCG-257081 eliminated resistant colony development. Resistant cells grew more slowly in vitro, but they developed highly aggressive tumors with a shortened survival of tumor-bearing mice. Increased expression of immune checkpoint inhibitor proteins (ICIs) in resistant lines may contribute to aggressive in vivo behavior. Beginning in the summer of 2014, a series of controversial deaths in the US, often involving white officers and unarmed minority men, contributed to the growing debate about the need for increased transparency and accountability in policing. Central to the debate has been the call for more body-worn cameras (BWCs), a widely adopted technology that promises numerous benefits through real-time recording of police-public encounters. However, critics of this technology claim that increased surveillance of their behavior may lead to de-policing where officers choose to reduce the quality and/or quantity of their self-initiated police work. This claim has recently received empirical scrutiny in the context of the two main self-initiated activities underlying police work: foot patrols and traffic stops. However, the studies have mainly been outcome-orientated (e.g., stop and frisk or issuance of a citation) rather than activity-focused. The de-policing claim is tested here using data from a lengthy, quasi-experimental evaluation of BWCs in a large US police department. The findings show that the number of foot patrols and traffic stops conducted did not vary based on whether an officer wore a BWC or not. The Dark Sextad Plus Schema (DSPS) is introduced in this article. The six components—narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism, power orientation, charisma/charm, and sadomasochism—are described succinctly and considered in the context of Taoism. That approach points to both the positive and negative aspects of the schema as it is enacted and encountered in organizations by leaders and consultants. The continuous phenomenon of why human enterprises and communities keep selecting and electing scoundrels as leaders is tied directly to the operation of the DSPS and its extensive influence. The schema is briefly discussed as it operates in broader ecological environments and different patterns of how it is encountered are described. Several significant cautions are offered for leaders and consultants when they either believe they are encountering the schema or are actively confronted by the realities that superiors, peers, subordinates, clients, competitors, and significant others operate within and through its components. Resources and approaches to engage individuals presenting these complex behaviors are provided. Background: In the United States (US), each blood center's medical director sets policy for donors with a cancer history. Study Design and Methods: A subgroup of America's Blood Centers' (ABC) Scientific, Medical, and Technical Committee developed a survey to measure the determination of eligibility, policies for deferral and/or lookback when a donor reports a current diagnosis or history of cancer. A 31‐question survey was sent to 47 ABC blood centers in North America via email. Survey results were compiled and literature evaluating the risk of cancer transmission by transfusion was reviewed. Results: Responses were received from 37 centers (79%). Donors with a history of carcinoma or sarcoma who had completed treatment were accepted at 73% of centers with no further deferral. Donors with a history of leukemia or lymphoma were permanently deferred at 76% of centers. Donors with a myelodysplastic or myeloproliferative syndrome were deferred permanently at 86% of centers. Handling of donors with high white cell counts varied. Donors with cancer not in active treatment (i.e., prostate cancer) were subject to various deferrals. Center response to post‐donation reports of cancer vary widely. Literature review yielded no evidence of transfusion‐transmitted cancer. Conclusion: Cancer deferral policies vary widely among blood centers, and are not generally based on evidence, but on some aspect of the precautionary principle. The form of the cyphonautes larva of bryozoans changes little during development. The ciliated band that generates the feeding current increases nearly in proportion to body length, so that the maximum rate of clearing planktonic food from a volume of water becomes increasingly low relative to body protein. This development is unlike the other larvae that produce a feeding current with bands of simple cilia. The cyphonautes' growth rate has therefore been predicted to be unusually low when food is scarce. As predicted, cyphonautes larvae of a species of Membranipora starved at concentrations of food that supported growth of pluteus larvae. Comparisons between the cyphonautes and plutei of a sand dollar were for growth from first feeding to metamorphosis, with a mix of two algal species. Another comparison was for growth of cyphonautes at an advanced stage and plutei of a regular sea urchin at an early stage, with food in seawater at a reduced concentration. The low maximum clearance rate did not prevent rapid growth and development of some cyphonautes from egg through metamorphosis when food was abundant. Twenty-nine days for development to metamorphosis in the laboratory with abundant food was close to Yoshioka's estimate of larval duration from the time lag between adult zooid density and larval abundance in a population in the Southern California Bight. Despite individual variation in growth rates and other physiological and environmental influences, simple measures of larval form predicted the differences in larval performance: scarce food extended larval duration for the cyphonautes more than for plutei. Transfusion medicine resembles all of medicine in that expert opinion predominates because hard data on clinical outcomes from randomized controlled trials and high quality observational data are simply unavailable. Indeed, some of the first trials evaluating important outcomes are barely two decades old. Patient blood management (PBM) depends on high quality data for assisting clinicians in making clinical decisions. In this review, we focus on several red blood cell (RBC) transfusion practices that new data suggest need reconsideration. The practices that may need revision include transfusion for iron deficiency anaemia, except in life threatening situations, toleration of anaemia as a largely benign condition and use of haemoglobin/haematocrit as primary indications for RBC transfusion, as opposed to adjuncts to clinical judgement. In addition, the long‐standing notion that the minimum transfusion should be two units needs to be abandoned due to the danger to patients and a lack of clinical evidence of benefit. Finally, the difference in indications for leucoreduction versus irradiation needs to be understood by all practitioners. PBM is one of the strategies for managing anaemia and bleeding that holds great promise for patients, and transfusion is only one facet of the bundle of practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
