The increase of intracellular cyclic AMP levels suppresses the cytotoxic activities of lymphocytes and monosaccharides interfere with cell to cell and cell to cytokine interactions, and these effects on natural killer (NK)/antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) and lymphokine activated killer (LAK) activities were examined. Dibutyryl cyclic AMP markedly suppressed NK, IL-2-augmented NK and ADCC activities in a dose-dependent manner but not previously induced LAK activity. Induction of LAK was inhibited. Dibutyryl cyclic GMP had no effect. Addition of mannose 6-phosphate and galactose 6-phosphate strongly inhibited NK and ADCC activities, but not LAK activity. We studied the genetic control of porphyromonas gingivalis fimbriae response. Inbred mice with different H-2 haplotypes and/or different genetic backgrounds were inoculated with viable P. gingivalis 381 cells and tested for fimbria-specific T cell responses in vivo (delayed-type hypersensitivity). H-2d mice showed a strong footpad response, whereas H-2b mice showed a weak response to fimbriae from P. gingivalis. Similar evidence of genetic control was obtained with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the detection of IgG antibody in inbred mice (BALB/c, C3H/HeN and C57BL/6). Several immunoglobulin G (IgG) subclass responses were associated with H-2 in these B10 congenic mice. However, quantification of IgG antibody to fimbriae was not controlled by H-2 in B10 congenic mice. The results indicate that, in mice, the responsiveness to fimbriae of P. gingivalis can be controlled by several genes, including the H-2 complex. C3H/HeN mice were inoculated with the fimbriae intravenously, and the expression of surface antigens on spleen T cells was measured in a fluorescent antibody cell sorter. This paper presents a novel definition of a vortex that integrates the concepts of the invariant swirling motion, the pressure minimum characteristics induced by the swirling motion and the positive Laplacian of the pressure. The current definition specifies a vortex that has a swirling motion and resulting pressure minimum feature in the swirl plane, which is simply represented by the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the velocity gradient tensor. Misfit strain relaxation in tensile-strained Si grown at 600 °C on (0?0?1) SiGe-on-insulator substrates is experimentally studied for a tensile strain range between 0.4 and 1.2%. The critical thickness is found to be rather thinner than Houghton's critical thickness for a compressively-mismatched SiGe/Si(0?0?1) system. The thinner critical thickness in tensile-strained Si is attributed to the fact that the stress-relieving misfit dislocations are 90° partial dislocations, instead of 60° misfit dislocations for the compressive SiGe/Si(0?0?1) system. With increasing strained-Si layer thickness thicker than the critical thickness, 60° misfit dislocation is found to be increasingly formed but the strain relaxation is sluggish. For a supercritical thickness ten times thicker than the critical thickness the tensile strain mostly remains. In this research, we used a 135 MeV/nucleon carbon-ion beam to irradiate a biological sample composed of fresh chicken meat and bones, which was placed in front of a PAGAT gel dosimeter, and compared the measured and simulated transverse-relaxation-rate (R2) distributions in the gel dosimeter. We experimentally measured the three-dimensional R2 distribution, which records the dose induced by particles penetrating the sample, by using magnetic resonance imaging. The obtained R2 distribution reflected the heterogeneity of the biological sample. We also conducted Monte Carlo simulations using the PHITS code by reconstructing the elemental composition of the biological sample from its computed tomography images while taking into account the dependence of the gel response on the linear energy transfer. The simulation reproduced the experimental distal edge structure of the R2 distribution with an accuracy under about 2 mm, which is approximately the same as the voxel size currently used in treatment planning.
