The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI, 2000) recently released a report on common background characteristics of school shooters, which also stressed the importance of evaluating the reality of threat. The present study evaluated respondents' ability to discriminate between an unrealistic and a realistic threat and between a low and high risk level based on the FBI's background profile characteristics as well as to determine attitudes about whether some intervention was necessary. Respondents completed one of four randomly distributed vignettes, which differed in a 2 X 2 design (high vs. low background risk X realistic vs. unrealistic threat). These vignettes described a student who made a threatening statement regarding a teacher. Respondents then rated the student's level of risk for violence and indicated the degree to which they would intervene. Results revealed that, in keeping with the FBI guidelines, both reality of threat and background risk characteristics significantly influenced respondents' perceived risk for violence and need to intervene. This study examined adoptees' and birth parents' experiences in therapy, including the perceived level of helpfulness and preparation by therapists relating to adoption issues as a function of the year these experiences occurred. Participants consisted of 152 adoptees and 66 birth parents, with the majority (78%) of the respondents being female. Overall, adoption inquiry, addressing adoption issues, helpfulness, and preparedness by therapists increased from 1965 though the 1990s. Therapists who inquired about adoption (54%) or addressed adoption (72%) were perceived as being significantly more prepared and helpful compared to those therapists who did not inquire about or address adoption issues. Uncertainty is a frequent feature of chronic illness and can have a particularly important impact in the case of organ transplantation. This study of 100 women with primary biliary cirrhosis who were either waiting for or had already had a liver transplant focused on both changes in uncertainty with transplant and the correlates of uncertainty both pre- and post-transplant. While those who were post-transplant had significantly lower uncertainty scores (measured by the Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale-Adult Version-MUIS-A) than those on the waiting list, uncertainty was still persistent and associated with a reduced quality of life. The most significant factors in relation to uncertainty were fatigue, depression, anxiety, and dissatisfaction with medical information received. It is important for both patients and transplant team members to recognize the impact of uncertainty on a patient's well-being, both before and after a transplant, and to address the underlying factors that continue to compromise quality of life even after a life-saving procedure.
