Search

We extend a recently introduced prototypical stochastic model describing uniformly the search and return of objects looking for new food sources around a given home. The model describes the kinematic motion of the object with constant speed in two dimensions. The angular dynamics is driven by noise and describes a "pursuit" and "escape" behavior of the heading and the position vectors. Pursuit behavior ensures the return to the home and the escaping between the two vectors realizes exploration of space in the vicinity of the given home. Noise is originated by environmental influences and during decision making of the object. We take symmetric α -stable noise since such noise is observed in experiments. We now investigate for the simplest possible case, the consequences of limited knowledge of the position angle of the home. We find that both noise type and noise strength can significantly increase the probability of returning to the home. First, we review shortly main findings of the model presented in the former manuscript. These are the stationary distance distribution of the noise driven conservative dynamics and the observation of an optimal noise for finding new food sources. Afterwards, we generalize the model by adding a constant shift γ within the interaction rule between the two vectors. The latter might be created by a permanent uncertainty of the correct home position. Nonvanishing shifts transform the kinematics of the searcher to a dissipative dynamics. In this work we derive and analyse coarse-grained descriptions of self-propelled particles with selective attraction-repulsion interaction, where individuals may respond differently to their neighbours depending on their relative state of motion (approach versus movement away). Based on the formulation of a nonlinear Fokker–Planck equation, we derive a kinetic description of the system dynamics in terms of equations for the Fourier modes of the one-particle density function. This approach allows effective numerical investigation of the stability of solutions of the nonlinear Fokker–Planck equation. Further on, we also derive a hydrodynamic theory by performing a closure at the level of the second Fourier mode of the one-particle density function. We show that the general form of equations is in agreement with the theory formulated by Toner and Tu. The stability of spatially homogeneous solutions is analysed and the range of validity of the hydrodynamic equations is quantified. Finally, we compare our analytical predictions on the stability of the homogeneous solutions with results of individual-based simulations. They show good agreement for sufficiently large densities and non-negligible short-ranged repulsion. The results of the kinetic theory for weak short-ranged repulsion reveal the existence of a previously unknown phase of the model consisting of dense, nematically aligned filaments, which cannot be accounted for by the present hydrodynamics theory of the Toner and Tu type for polar active matter. We consider a model of active Brownian particles (ABPs) with velocity alignment in two spatial dimensions with passive and active fluctuations. Here, active fluctuations refers to purely non-equilibrium stochastic forces correlated with the heading of an individual active particle. In the simplest case studied here, they are assumed to be independent stochastic forces parallel (speed noise) and perpendicular (angular noise) to the velocity of the particle. On the other hand, passive fluctuations are defined by a noise vector independent of the direction of motion of a particle, and may account, for example, for thermal fluctuations. We derive a macroscopic description of the ABP gas with velocityalignment interaction. Here, we start from the individual-based description in terms of stochastic differential equations (Langevin equations) and derive equations of motion for the coarse-grained kinetic variables (density, velocity and temperature) via a moment expansion of the corresponding probability density function. We focus here on the different impact of active and passive fluctuations on onset of collective motion and show how active fluctuations in the active Brownian dynamics can change the phase-transition behaviour of the system. In particular, we show that active angular fluctuations lead to an earlier breakdown of collective motion and to the emergence of a new bistable regime in the mean-field case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Motivated by recent experiments on intracellular calcium release we study the effects of different types of coupling on the dynamics of arrays of excitable elements. We intend to find a mechanism that produces a sustained activity of the elements following a spike. While instantaneous diffusive coupling does not exhibit this property, we show that, for a coupling term with temporal delay, signals from adjacent elements can serve as mutual excitations and thus prolong the duration of the signal. We propose that time delayed coupling is generated by diffusion between isolated clusters of calcium channels. Our model could thus provide an explanation for two different release modes observed in the system. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The nonintegrable Hamiltonian dynamics of particles placed in a symmetric, spatially periodic potential and subjected to a periodically varying field is explored. Such systems can exhibit a rich diversity of unusual transport features. In particular, depending on the setting of the initial phase of the drive, the possibility of a giant transient directed transport in a symmetric, space-periodic potential when driven with an adiabatically varying field arises. Here, we study the escape scenario and corresponding mean escape times of particles from a trapping region with the subsequent generation of a transient directed flow of an ensemble of particles. It is shown that for adiabatically slow inclination modulations the unidirectional flow proceeds over giant distances. The direction of escape and, hence, of the flow is entirely governed whether the periodic force, modulating the inclination of the potential, starts out initially positive or negative. In the phase space, this transient directed flow is associated with a long-lasting motion taking place within ballistic channels contained in the non-uniform chaotic layer. Abstract: We study the combined implications of connectivity and heterogeneous inputs on the synchronization features of a one-dimensional chain of diffusively coupled FitzHugh Nagumo (FHN) systems. The uncoupled systems are triggered into a regime of chaotic firing by periodic parametric forces modeling external stimuli. Due to the parameter dispersion involved in randomly distributed amplitudes and/or phases of the forces the units are nonidentical and the firing events on the chain of uncoupled units will be asynchronous leading to a distribution of the spiking times. Interest is focused on mutually synchronized spikings arising through the coupling where the connectivity of the network may range from nearest-neighbor interaction to global interactions. From our studies we conclude that increasing the interaction radius does not necessarily entail better spike synchrony and the coupling strength plays a more important role than connectivity. It is found that for driving with random amplitudes together with random phases a critical interaction radius exists beyond which firing becomes suppressed if the coupling between the units is too strong. In such cases of ‘firing death’ the units perform only small-amplitude oscillations which are mutually synchronous. The optimal coupling for spike synchrony is of intermediate strength and altering the connectivity does not really matter for the degree of spike synchrony. Distinct to that, when all the phases are equal and only the amplitudes of the forces are randomly distributed enhanced spike synchrony is achieved for sufficiently strong coupling regardless of the interaction radius. We study the stationary probability density of a Brownian particle in a potential with a single-well subject to the purely additive thermal and dichotomous noise sources. We find situations where bimodality of stationary densities emerges due to presence of dichotomous noise. The solutions are constructed using stochastic dynamics (Langevin equation) or by discretization of the corresponding Fokker-Planck equations. We find that in models with both noises being additive the potential has to grow faster than |x| in order to obtain bimodality. A spatially extended Lotka-Volterra system of two competing species in the presence of two correlated noise sources is analyzed: (i) an external multiplicative time correlated noise, which mimics the interaction between the system and the environment; (ii) a dichotomous stochastic process, whose jump rate is a periodic function, which represents the interaction parameter between the species. The moment equations for the species densities are derived in Gaussian approximation, using a mean field approach. Within this formalism we study the effect of the external time correlated noise on the ecosystem dynamics. We find that the time behavior of the 1st order moments are independent on the multiplicative noise source. However, the behavior of the 2nd order moments is strongly affected both by the intensity and the correlation time of the multiplicative noise. We consider the self-organized escape of a chain of coupled oscillators from a metastable state over an energetic barrier. The underlying dynamics is conservative and deterministic. Supply of sufficient total energy or application of external forces brings the chain into the nonlinear regime from which an initially almost uniform lattice state becomes unstable and nonlinear redistribution leads to strong localization of energy. A spontaneously emerging critical localized mode grows to the unstable transition state and the chain, passing through the latter, performs a collective escape process over the barrier. It turns out that this nonlinear barrier crossing in a microcanonical situation is more efficient compared with a thermally activated chain for small ratios between the total energy of the chain and the barrier energy. We consider the drift and diffusion properties of periodically driven renewal processes. These processes are defined by a periodically time dependent waiting time distribution, which governs the interval between subsequent events. We show that the growth of the cumulants of the number of events is asymptotically periodic and develop a theory which relates these periodic growth coefficients to the waiting time distribution defining the periodic renewal process. The first two coefficients, which are the mean frequency and effective diffusion coefficient of the number of events are considered in greater detail. The dynamics of a spatially extended system of two competing species in the presence of two noise sources is studied. A correlated dichotomous noise acts on the interaction parameter and a multiplicative white noise affects directly the dynamics of the two species. To describe the spatial distribution of the species we use a model based on Lotka-Volterra (LV) equations. By writing them in a mean field form, the corresponding moment equations for the species concentrations are obtained in Gaussian approximation. In this formalism the system dynamics is analyzed for different values of the multiplicative noise intensity. Finally by comparing these results with those obtained by direct simulations of the time discrete version of LV equations, that is coupled map lattice (CML) model, we conclude that the anticorrelated oscillations of the species densities are strictly related to non-overlapping spatial patterns. We discuss effects of pairwise aligning interactions in an ensemble of central place foragers or of searchers that are connected to a common home. In a wider sense, we also consider self-moving entities that are attracted to a central place such as, for instance, the zooplankton Daphnia being attracted to a beam of light. Single foragers move with constant speed due to some propulsive mechanism. They explore at random loops the space around and return rhytmically to their home. In the ensemble, the direction of the velocity of a searcher is aligned to the motion of its neighbors. At first, we perform simulations of this ensemble and find a cooperative behavior of the entities. Above an overcritical interaction strength the trajectories of the searcher qualitatively changes and searchers start to move along circles around the home position. Thereby, all searchers rotate either clockwise or anticlockwise around the central home position as it was reported for the zooplankton Daphnia. At second, the computational findings are analytically explained by the formulation of transport equations outgoing from the nonlinear mean field Fokker-Planck equation of the considered situation. In the asymptotic stationary limit, we find expressions for the critical interaction strength, the mean radial and orbital velocities of the searchers and their velocity variances. We also obtain the marginal spatial and angular densities in the undercritical regime where the foragers behave like individuals as well as in the overcritical regime where they rotate collectively around the considered home. We consider the impact of inertia on biased Brownian motion of point-size particles in a two-dimensional channel with sinusoidally varying width. If the time scales of the problem separate, the adiabatic elimination of the transverse degrees of freedom leads to an effective description for the motion along the channel given by the potential of mean force. The possibility of such description is intimately connected with equipartition. Numerical simulations show that in the presence of external bias the equipartition may break down leading to non-monotonic dependence of mobility on external force and several other interesting effects. The bistable CO oxidation on a nanoscale surface is characterized by a limited number of reacting molecules on the catalytic area. Internal fluctuations due to finite-size effects are studied by the master equation with a Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism for CO oxidation. Analytical solutions can be found in a reduced one-component model after the adiabatic elimination of one variable which in our case is the oxygen coverage. It is shown that near the critical point, with decreasing surface area, one cannot distinguish between two macroscopically stable stationary states. This is a consequence of the large fluctuations in the coverage which occur on a fast time scale. Under these conditions, the transition times between the macroscopic states also are no longer separated from the short-time scale of the coverage fluctuations as is the case for large surface areas and far away from the critical point. The corresponding stationary solutions of the probability distribution and the mean first passage times calculated in the reduced model are supported by numerics of the full two-component model. The physics of activated escape of objects out of a metastable state plays a key role in diverse scientific areas involving chemical kinetics, diffusion and dislocation motion in solids, nucleation, electrical transport, motion of flux lines superconductors, charge density waves, and transport processes of macromolecules and astrophysics, to name but a few. The underlying activated processes present the multidimensional extension of the Kramers problem of a single Brownian particle. In comparison to the latter case, however, the dynamics ensuing from the interactions of many coupled units can lead to intriguing novel phenomena that are not present when only a single degree of freedom is involved. In this review we report on a variety of such phenomena that are exhibited by systems consisting of chains of interacting units in the presence of potential barriers. In the first part we consider recent developments in the case of a deterministic dynamics driving cooperative escape processes of coupled nonlinear units out of metastable states. The ability of chains of coupled units to undergo spontaneous conformational transitions can lead to a self-organised escape. The mechanism at work is that the energies of the units become re-arranged, while keeping the total energy conserved, in forming localised energy modes that in turn trigger the cooperative escape. We present scenarios of significantly enhanced noise-free escape rates if compared to the noise-assisted case. The second part of the review deals with the collective directed transport of systems of interacting particles overcoming energetic barriers in periodic potential landscapes. Escape processes in both time-homogeneous and time-dependent driven systems are considered for the emergence of directed motion. It is shown that ballistic channels immersed in the associated mixed high-dimensional phase space are at the source for the directed long-range transport. We investigate different dynamical regimes of the neuronal network in the CA3 area of the hippocampus. The proposed neuronal circuit includes two fast- and two slowly spiking cells which are interconnected by means of dynamical synapses. On the individual level, each neuron is modeled by FitzHugh-Nagumo equations. Three basic rhythmic patterns are observed: the gamma rhythm in which the fast neurons are uniformly spiking, the theta rhythm in which the individual spikes are separated by quiet epochs, and the theta-gamma rhythm with repeated patches of spikes. We analyze the influence of asymmetry of synaptic strengths on the synchronization in the network and demonstrate that strong asymmetry reduces the variety of available dynamical states. The model network exhibits multistability; this results in the occurrence of hysteresis in dependence on the conductances of individual connections. We show that switching between different rhythmic patterns in the network depends on the degree of synchronization between the slow cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A simple reaction–diffusion model of spreading depression (SD) is presented. Its local dynamics are governed by two activator and two inhibitor variables that provide an extremely simplified description of the mutual interaction between the neurons and extracellular space. This interaction is realized by the substances in the extracellular space that are increasing excitability of the neurons that have released them and are diffusing to the neighboring neurons, thereby spreading this excitation. Typical dynamic patterns of simulated activity are presented. The focus is laid on the case where response of the extracellular medium is relatively fast, and retracting waves, spiral-shaped waves, and autonomous pacemakers are observed, which is in good agreement with experimental observations. The underlying mechanisms are found to be related to switching between the local bi-stable, excitable, and self-sustained dynamics in the simulated medium. Biased Brownian motion of point-size particles in a three-dimensional tube with varying cross-section is investigated. In the fashion of our recent work, Martens et al. [Phys. Rev. E 83, 051135 (2011)] we employ an asymptotic analysis to the stationary probability density in a geometric parameter of the tube geometry. We demonstrate that the leading order term is equivalent to the Fick-Jacobs approximation. Expression for the higher order corrections to the probability density is derived. Using this expansion orders, we obtain that in the diffusion dominated regime the average particle current equals the zeroth order Fick-Jacobs result corrected by a factor including the corrugation of the tube geometry. In particular, we demonstrate that this estimate is more accurate for extremely corrugated geometries compared with the common applied method using a spatially-dependent diffusion coefficient D(x, f) which substitutes the constant diffusion coefficient in the common Fick-Jacobs equation. Transport of point-size Brownian particles under the influence of a constant and uniform force field through a planar three-dimensional channel with smoothly varying, axis-symmetric periodic side walls is investigated. Here we employ an asymptotic analysis in the ratio between the difference of the widest and the most narrow constriction divided through the period length of the channel geometry. We demonstrate that the leading-order term is equivalent to the Fick-Jacobs approximation. By use of the higher-order corrections to the probability density we show that in the diffusion-dominated regime the average transport velocity is obtained as the product of the zeroth-order Fick-Jacobs result and the expectation value of the spatially dependent diffusion coefficient D(x), which substitutes the constant diffusion coefficient in the common Fick-Jacobs equation. The analytic findings are corroborated with the precise numerical results of a finite element calculation of the Smoluchowski diffusive particle dynamics occurring in a reflection symmetric sinusoidal-shaped channel. Abstract: We consider moving particles in media with nonlinear friction and drive them by an asymmetric dichotomic Markov process. Due to different energy dissipations, during the forward and backward stroke, we obtain a mean non-vanishing directed flow of the particles. Starting with the stationary velocity distribution, we calculate the stationary current of particles, the variance and the relative variance in dependence on the degree of nonlinearity of the friction, on the asymmetry and for different strengths of friction. Abstract: The impact of surface size on two minimalistic models for the bistable CO oxidation is analytically studied. A simple model for the catalytic CO oxidation on nanoscale surfaces is analyzed by the chemical master equation. The analytical results predict a shift of the bistable region and cusp point in the global bifurcation diagram as a function of surface size. A reaction–diffusion stochastic model consisting of a collection of reactive subdomains locally coupled by CO diffusion is also considered. A local description of fluctuations can be obtained after applying a Weiss-type mean-field approximation. This approximation predicts, for infinitely many subdomains, a break of ergodicity and a bifurcation behavior like in first-order phase transitions as a function of surface size and coupling parameter. Abstract: In this work we investigate the influence of inhomogeneities on wave front propagation in an excitatory neural field model describing synaptic activity in the absence of delays. This allows the derivation of the spatial (and hence temporal) behaviour of the front velocity under the assumption that the front is approximatively homogeneous in a very small time window. With this assumption we can also derive the spatiotemporal behaviour of the membrane potential analytically in the vicinity of the wave front. In addition to this we investigate stationary solutions such as standing wave fronts and localised activity (so-called bumps) to determine the existence condition of travelling and standing fronts. Stimulation with periodic force is a standard method to study response properties of a system. Here we examine a special type of systems which generate a sequence of events with uncorrelated time intervals. We review analytical tools to calculate the gain and the signal-to-noise ratio for such systems when perturbed by sinusoidal signal and then apply these tools to the stochastic FitzHugh-Nagumo model. A spherical growth process controlled by velocity fluctuations of particles of a saturated solution is investigated. Velocity fluctuations are modeled by a Gaussian random field. The interface evolution is determined by a Langevin-type equation with a multiplicative random field, which in the case of the quasi-homogeneous random Gaussian field is equivalent to Fokker–Planck dynamics. We analyze numerically the Fokker–Planck equation and compare growth kinetics in the case of noisy (i.e. space-independent) fluctuations. It is shown that for a large class of spatially correlated velocity fluctuations, the growth kinetics is universal, i.e. it does not depend on the details of statistics of fluctuations. We consider the deterministic escape of a chain of harmonically coupled units from a metastable state over a cubic potential barrier. The underlying dynamics is conservative and noise-free. The supply of a sufficient total energy transforms the chain into the nonlinear regime from which an initially, nearly uniform lattice configuration becomes unstable, yielding a redistribution of energy. In an early stage of the dynamics, we estimate the degree of energy exchange enabling the coupled system to form strongly localized modes which eventually grow into a critical nucleus. Upon passing this transition state, the nonlinear chain performs a collective, deterministic escape. We study the propagation of periodic pulse trains in excitable media exposed to external spatio-temporal noise using the light-sensitive Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction with the underlying Oregonator model as representative example. In the weak noise approximation we find noise-induced transitions in the dispersion relation of pulse trains. We discuss noise-enhanced propagation of pulse trains within a certain wave-length range caused by external noise of moderate strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The subthreshold dynamics of a neuron can follow one of the two patterns: resonant neurons generate intrinsic subthreshold membrane potential oscillations, whereas in nonresonant neurons these oscillations are not observed. Here, we investigate how these subthreshold behaviors affect the suprathreshold response. Both types of neurons are described by a resonate and fire model, with the stable fixpoint being either a focus or a node. Using analytic expression for a linear oscillator model with threshold and reset, we calculate the multimodal interspike interval densities. We show that a change in model parameters induces qualitative changes in the interspike interval densities. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We study the stochastic dynamics of an ensemble of N globally coupled excitable elements. Each element is modeled by a FitzHugh–Nagumo oscillator and is disturbed by independent Gaussian noise. In simulations of the Langevin dynamics we characterize the collective behavior of the ensemble in terms of its mean field and show that with the increase of noise the mean field displays a transition from a steady equilibrium to global oscillations and then, for sufficiently large noise, back to another equilibrium. In the course of this transition diverse regimes of collective dynamics ranging from periodic subthreshold oscillations to large-amplitude oscillations and chaos are observed. In order to understand the details and mechanisms of these noise-induced dynamics we consider the thermodynamic limit N→∞ of the ensemble, and derive the cumulant expansion describing temporal evolution of the mean field fluctuations. In Gaussian approximation this allows us to perform the bifurcation analysis; its results are in good qualitative agreement with dynamical scenarios observed in the stochastic simulations of large ensembles. We investigate globally coupled stochastic three-state oscillators, which we consider as general models of stochastic excitable systems. We compare two situations: in the first case the transitions between the three states of each unit 1→2→3→1 are determined by Poissonian waiting time distributions. In the second case only transition 1→2 is Poissonian whereas the others are deterministic with a fixed delay. When coupled the second system shows coherent oscillations whereas the first remains in a stable stationary state. We show that the coherent oscillations are due to a Hopf-bifurcation in the dynamics of the occupation probabilities of the discrete states and discuss the bifurcation diagram. We are concerned with the dynamical description of the motion of a stochastic micro-swimmer with constant speed and fluctuating orientation in the long time limit by adiabatic elimination of the orientational variable. Starting with the corresponding full set of Langevin equations, we eliminate the memory in the stochastic orientation and obtain a stochastic equation for the position alone in the overdamped limit. We study the escape of a chain of coupled units over the barrier of a metastable potential. It is demonstrated that a very weak external driving field with a suitably chosen frequency suffices to accomplish speedy escape. The latter requires passage through a transition state, the formation of which is triggered by permanent feeding of energy from a phonon background into humps of localized energy and elastic interaction of the arising breather solutions. In fact, cooperativity between the units of the chain entailing coordinated energy transfer is shown to be crucial for enhancing the rate of escape in an extremely effective and low-energy cost way where the effects of entropie localization and breather coalescence conspire. We study the transport of Brownian particles through a corrugated channel caused by a force field containing curl-free (scalar potential) and divergence-free (vector potential) parts. We develop a generalized Fick-Jacobs approach leading to an effective one-dimensional description involving the potential of mean force. As an application, the interplay of a pressure-driven flow and an oppositely oriented constant bias is considered. We show that for certain parameters, the particle diffusion is significantly suppressed via the property of hydrodynamically enforced entropic particle trapping. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We numerically investigate the transport of a suspended overdamped Brownian particle which is driven through a two-dimensional rectangular array of circular obstacles with finite radius. Two limiting cases are considered in detail, namely, when the constant drive is parallel to the principal or the diagonal array axes. This corresponds to studying the Brownian transport in periodic channels with reflecting walls of different topologies. The mobility and diffusivity of the transported particles in such channels are determined as functions of the drive and the array geometric parameters. Prominent transport features, like negative differential mobilities, excess diffusion peaks, and unconventional asymptotic behaviors, are explained in terms of two distinct lengths, the size of single obstacles (trapping length), and the lattice constant of the array (local correlation length). We examine an ensemble of globally coupled FitzHugh–Nagumo systems with Gaussian, white noise. In the case of spatially uncorrelated noise, at high and at low noise levels the mean of the ensemble is steady. In between it exhibits a complex behavior. Depending on the noise intensity we find small scale oscillations, period doubling, chaos, and spiking. We derive equations of motion for the cumulants of the ensemble distribution. The results of the cumulant dynamics analysis are in good qualitative agreement with results from the Langevin dynamics. Once we additionally apply correlated noise but keep the sum of both noise intensities constant, the mean starts spiking where it did not spike with uncorrelated noise. We study the Brownian dynamics of individual particles with energy depot in two dimensions and extend the model to swarms of such particles. We assume that the elements (energy depots) are provided at discrete times with packets of chemical energy which is subsequently converted into acceleration of motion. In contrast to the mechanical white noise which is incorporated in the equations of mechanical motion and has no preferred direction, the energetic noise, as discussed in this study, is directed and it does not reverse the direction of mechanical motion. We characterize the effective noise acting on the particles and show that the stochastic energy supply may be modeled as a shot-noise driven Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process in energy which finally results in fluctuations of the velocity. We study the energy and velocity distributions for different regimes and estimate the crossover time from ballistic to diffusion motion. Further we investigate the dynamics of swarms and find a transition from translational to rotational motion depending on the rate of the shot noise. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The spatio-temporal dynamics of traveling waves in glycolysis as it occurs in yeast extract have been studied, both theoretically and experimentally. We describe this phenomenon with the distributed Selkov model that accounts for the reactions of phosphofructokinase, which is a key enzyme of the glycolytic reaction cascade. To describe the experimentally observed phase waves in an open spatial reactor we introduce a non-homogeneous flux of substrate in the model. The experimental observation that waves can change their direction of propagation during the experiment is considered in the model. The mechanism for such a change in wave direction is discussed. Abstract: In the present paper we consider the deterministic escape dynamics of a dimer from a metastable state over an anharmonic potential barrier. The underlying dynamics is conservative and noiseless and thus, the allocated energy has to suffice for barrier crossing. The two particles comprising the dimer are coupled through a spring. Their motion takes place in a two-dimensional plane. Each of the two constituents for itself is unable to escape, but as the outcome of strongly chaotic coupled dynamics the two particles exchange energy in such a way that eventually exit from the domain of attraction may be promoted. We calculate the corresponding critical dimer configuration as the transition state and its associated activation energy vital for barrier crossing. It is found that there exists a bounded region in the parameter space where a fast escape entailed by chaotic dynamics is observed. Interestingly, outside this region the system can show Fermi resonance which, however turns out to impede fast escape. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We review the behavior of theoretical models of excitable systems driven by Gaussian white noise. We focus mainly on those general properties of such systems that are due to noise, and present several applications of our findings in biophysics and lasers.As prototypes of excitable stochastic dynamics we consider the FitzHugh–Nagumo and the leaky integrate-and-fire model, as well as cellular automata and phase models. In these systems, taken as individual units or as networks of globally or locally coupled elements, we study various phenomena due to noise, such as noise-induced oscillations, stochastic resonance, stochastic synchronization, noise-induced phase transitions and noise-induced pulse and spiral dynamics.Our approach is based on stochastic differential equations and their corresponding Fokker–Planck equations, treated by both analytical calculations and/or numerical simulations. We calculate and/or measure the rate and diffusion coefficient of the excitation process, as well as spectral quantities like power spectra and degree of coherence. Combined with a multiparametric bifurcation analysis of the corresponding cumulant equations, these approaches provide a comprehensive picture of the multifaceted dynamical behaviour of noisy excitable systems. We develop a prototypical stochastic model for a local search around a given home. The stochastic dynamic model is motivated by experimental findings of the motion of a fruit fly around a given spot of food but will generally describe the local search behavior. The local search consists of a sequence of two epochs. In the first the searcher explores new space around the home, whereas it returns to the home during the second epoch. In the proposed two-dimensional model both tasks are described by the same stochastic dynamics. The searcher moves with constant speed and its angular dynamics is driven by a symmetric α-stable noise source. The latter stands for the uncertainty to decide the new direction of motion. The main ingredient of the model is the nonlinear interaction dynamics of the searcher with its home. In order to determine the new heading direction, the searcher has to know the actual angles of its position to the home and of the heading vector. A bound state to the home is realized by a permanent switch of a repulsive and attractive forcing of the heading direction from the position direction corresponding to search and return epochs. Our investigation elucidates the analytic tractability of the deterministic and stochastic dynamics. Noise transforms the conservative deterministic dynamics into a dissipative one of the moments. The noise enables a faster finding of a target distinct from the home with optimal intensity. This optimal situation is related to the noise-dependent relaxation time. It is uniquely defined for all α and distinguishes between the stochastic dynamics before and after its value. For times large compared to this, we derive the corresponding Smoluchowski equation and find diffusive spreading of the searcher in the space. We report on the qualitative agreement with the experimentally observed spatial distribution, noisy oscillatory return times, and spatial autocorrelation function of the fruit fly. However, as a result of its simplicity, the model aims to reproduce the local search behavior of other units during their exploration of surrounding space and their quasiperiodic return to a home.
