Guided wave Electro Magnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMATs) offer an elegant method for structural inspection and localisation relative to geometric features, such as welds. This paper presents a Lorentz force EMAT construction framework, where a numerical model has been developed for optimising Printed Circuit Board (PCB) coil parameters as well as a methodology for optimising magnet array parameters to a user's needs. This framework was validated experimentally to show its effectiveness through comparison to an industry built EMAT. The framework was then used to design and manufacture a Side-Shifted Unidirectional Periodic Permanent Magnet (PPM) EMAT for use on a mobile robotic system, which uses guided waves for ranging to build internal maps of a given subject, identifying welded sections, defects and other structural elements. The unidirectional transducer setup was shown to operate in simulation and was then manufactured to compare to the bidirectional transmitter and two-receiver configurations on a localisation system. The unidirectional setup was shown to have clear benefits over the bidirectional setup for mapping an unknown environment using guided waves as there were no dead spots of mapping where signal direction could not be interpreted. In this paper, a novel 2D analytical model based on the Huygens’s principle of wave propagation is proposed in order to predict the directivity patterns of contact type ultrasonic transducers in the generation of guided waves (GWs). The developed model is able to estimate the directivity patterns at any distance, at any excitation frequency and for any configuration and shape of the transducers with prior information of phase dispersive characteristics of the guided wave modes and the behavior of transducer. This, in turn, facilitates to choose the appropriate transducer or arrays of transducers, suitable guided wave modes and excitation frequency for the nondestructive testing (NDT) and structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. The model is demonstrated for P1-type macro-fiber composite (MFC) transducer glued on a 2 mm thick aluminum (Al) alloy plate. The directivity patterns of MFC transducer in the generation of fundamental guided Lamb modes (the S0 and A0) and shear horizontal mode (the SH0) are successfully obtained at 80 kHz, 5-period excitation signal. The results are verified using 3D finite element (FE) modelling and experimental investigation. The results obtained using the proposed model shows the good agreement with those obtained using numerical simulations and experimental analysis. The use of guided waves is now widespread in industrial NDT for locating metal loss in pipelines, that manifests as pitting, corrosion and general wall thinning. In this paper, a screening technique is assessed in terms of defect detection and defect sizing capability. Shear Horizontal (SH) guided waves propagate circumferentially around the pipe whilst the scanner is moved axially along the length. This type of tool is preferable to other methods, being applied to the exterior of the pipe, without requiring full circumferential access, and is able to operate through thin coatings (up to 1 mm thick). It is designed to provide a pipe screening tool for petrochemical pipelines both topside and subsea, particularly for detecting defects at pipe support areas. The system's efficacy in terms of detection and sizing of defects is considered via experimental measurements on artificially induced defects and in service corrosion patches, with results compared to finite element modelling of the interaction of the guided waves with artificial defects. Finite element modelling has been used to better understand the behaviour of different wave modes when they interact with defects, focusing on the mode conversions and reflections that occur. Antisymmetric and symmetric Lamb-type feature guided waves (FGW) have recently been shown to exist in small angle plate bends. This paper reports Semi-Analytical Finite Element (SAFE) method simulations revealing the existence of a new family of Shear Horizontal ( SH B ) type of FGW mode in 90° bends in plate structures. Mode shapes and velocity dispersion curves are extracted, demonstrating the SH -like nature of a bend-confined mode identified in studies of power flow across the bend. The SH B mode is shown to have reduced attenuation in the higher frequency range, making it an ideal choice for high-resolution inspection of such bends. Further modal studies examine the physical basis for mode confinement, and argue that this is strongly related to FGW phenomena reported earlier, and also linked to the curvature at the bend region. Wedge acoustic waves discussed widely in literature are shown as arising from surface-limiting of the SH B mode at higher frequencies. Due to the large number of pipe supports over a piping run, a rapid reliable NDT system is needed to identify hidden corrosion defects at a pipe-support interface. To accomplish this, a system using Periodic Permanent Magnet (PPM) Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMAT׳s) to generate dispersive SH1 guided waves is implemented. For this study, both the effect of the support contact and a corrosion type defect are evaluated independently through finite element models and experiments utilizing a flat plate approximation. It was found that utilizing the SH1 plate wave near the inflection point or ‘knee’ of the dispersion curve yields a high sensitivity to gradual wall loss defects while experiencing a minimal effect from the support contact. ABSTRACT A computational frequency analysis of secondary wave mode generation is considered in this paper. Secondary wave mode conversion at the tip of a through-thickness slit in a circular isotropic plate is analysed similar to a classical Sommerfeld's diffraction problem. The analysis is useful for quantitative non-destructive evaluation of fatigue cracked plate structures that involve propagation of a single wave mode (a vertically polarised symmetric Lamb mode) and measurement of the amplitude of a new mode (a horizontally polarised shear mode). A two-dimensional finite element model is first introduced as a baseline reference for the non-dispersive scenario. This model is used to study the effect that P-wave angle of incidence has on the mode converted S-wave from the tip of the slit. A dispersive three-dimensional finite element model of the circular plate is then introduced at a number of frequency-thickness products within the range 0.5-3 MHz.mm−1. Within this frequency-thickness range, significant changes to the through-thickness displacement profiles of the incident S0 Lamb mode occur. The secondary SH0 plate wave mode generated by mode conversion from the 45o incident S0 Lamb mode at the tip of a slit is analysed to establish the efficiency of the mode conversion. Visualisations of the wave fields demonstrate that at frequency-thickness products higher than the first symmetric Lamé mode (where there is no in-plane surface displacement), the in-plane through-thickness displacement profile of the incident S0 Lamb mode becomes incompatible with that of the SH0 plate mode, and the mode conversion phenomenon is thus severely compromised.
