Background: Optimal feeding practices for sick children are crucial to prevent morbidity and mortality. Despite global and national policies emphasizing the importance of optimal feeding practices for sick children, studies have revealed varying levels of practice in different regions, including Ethiopia. However, there is a research gap in focusing on community-based contexts to determine sick child feeding practices among mothers with young children. Objective: To assess maternal feeding practices for sick children under 2 years in Wolkite town, Gurage zone, Central Ethiopia: 2024. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study involving a total of 419 mothers of young children was conducted in Wolkite town, Gurage zone, Central Ethiopia from September 15 to November 15, 2023. Participants were chosen using computer-generated random numbers. Structured, interviewer-administered, and pretested data collection tool were used. The data were coded and entered into EpiData 3.1 before being exported to SPSS version 25 for analysis. Logistic regression was employed to identify factors influencing mothers' practice. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05 with a 95% confidence interval. Results: The study found that 54.4% (95% CI: 50–59%) of mothers demonstrated good feeding practices for their sick children. Significant factors contributing to these practices included mothers having at least a secondary education (AOR: 3.7, 95% CI: 1.5–9.1), delivering their child in a health facility (AOR: 2.3, 95% CI: 1.4–3.8), and receiving support from the father (AOR: 2.3, 95% CI: 1.4–3.8). Additionally, mothers who were counseled on infant and young child feeding had higher odds of practicing good feeding (AOR: 4.1, 95% CI: 2.3–7.03), access to postnatal care (AOR: 3.8, 95% CI: 2.1–6.95) and having a good knowledge of feeding practices (AOR: 2.5, 95% CI: 1.4–4.5) were also strongly associated with effective feeding practices. Conclusions: The study highlights more than half of mothers in Wolkite town, Gurage zone, Central Ethiopia have good sick child feeding practices. Factors such as the higher educational status of the mother, having the father's support, place of delivery, receiving PNC services, counseling on infant and young child feeding, and knowledge about sick child feeding were significantly associated with their practice. Implementing targeted education programs, strengthening postnatal care services, counseling on infant and young child feeding, and encouraging the involvement of fathers in childcare and feeding were strongly recommended. Sleep is a common challenge for parents with sick children and can impact parents' health, wellbeing, and caregiving responsibilities. Despite the vast research around parental sleep when their child is sick, the concept is not clearly defined. A phased principle‐based concept analysis that includes triangulation of methods and quality criteria assessment was used to explore how the concept is described, used, and measured in the current literature. The aim was to analyse and clarify the conceptual, operational, and theoretical basis of parental sleep when their child is sick to produce an evidence‐based definition and to identify knowledge gaps. A systematic literature search including databases CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, PsychARTICLES, PsychINFO, Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science, identified 546 articles. The final dataset comprised 74 articles published between 2005 and 2021 and was assessed using a criteria tool for principle‐based concept analysis. Data were managed using NVivo, and thematic analysis was undertaken. A precise definition is not present in the literature. Various tools have been used to measure parents' sleep, as well as exploration via interviews, open‐ended questions, and sleep diaries. The terminology used varied. Parental sleep when their child is sick is interrelated with other concepts (e.g., stress). A recommended definition is offered. A conceptual understanding of parental sleep when their child is sick will help to guide translational research and to conduct studies critical to clinical practice and research. Objective: Children's healthy nutrition is a priority for mothers. The mother's eating behavior affects her feeding behavior. The aim of this study was to investigate the tendency of healthy eating obsession of mothers parenting with chronic or acute diseases. Material and Methods: The study was conducted with mothers of children hospitalized due to chronic or acute illness. ORTO-11 scale was given to mothers and they were asked to complete it. The ORTO-11 scale measures healthy eating obsession (orthorexic eating behavior). The low score on the scale indicates a tendency to obsess over healthy eating. Results: There was no significant difference between the ORTO-11 scores of the mothers of children with chronic and acute disease (p> 0.05). The score of the mothers of children with chronic illness who perceived their income level good was significantly lower than those who perceived low (p <0.05). ORTO-11 scores of mothers with good income or working were significantly lower than those who don't work or have low income (p <0.05). There was no significant relationship between the duration of illness, age, weight and height percentiles of the children and ORTO-11 scores (p> 0.05). Conclusion: The obsession with healthy eating was found to be similar in these two groups of mothers having a diseased child hospitalized due to chronic or acute illness. It was observed that income level of mothers influenced the tendency to obsess over healthy eating regardless of the children's acute or chronic illness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Retinoblastoma (RB) seriously damages children’s vision health and life safety. This study established a new method of optical coherence tomography (OCT) assisted RB zebrafish model construction, and used OCT to evaluate the distribution and survival status of RB cells in the eyes in vivo. Twenty-four normal zebrafish were used in this study, of which 21 were used to construct the RB zebrafish model and the remaining 3 were used as control. The specific method was to inject fluorescent RB cell into the eyeball through an injection under OCT real-time imaging. The distribution and survival status of cell were observed at the 0th, 24th, 48th, and 72th hour after cell injection. At the same time, the zebrafish eyes were imaged with a stereo fluorescent microscope (SFM) before and after modeling, as a control. The results showed that high-resolution, large-depth threedimensional distribution of RB cell clusters in the eyes could be obtained by OCT. Further OCT image intensity analysis could quantify the number of RB cells, and the results were highly matched with the results of the SFM images. In conclusion, the strategy of combining zebrafish model with OCT imaging technology is expected to provide new methods and equipment for the study of RB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Hospitalization is a fearful negative experience for children and families. The aim of this study is to learn the feelings and thoughts of school age children hospitalized in the hospital about "illness and hospital". Material and Method: The study was carried out with 100 children hospitalized in the pediatric ward of a state hospital. In this qualitatively planned study, a sentence completion test was applied with the creative play method aiming to reveal the illness and hospital-related thoughts of hospitalized school-age children. In the sentence completion test, the themes and categories were created by content analysis by the researchers. Ethics committee and necessary permissions were obtained for the study. Results: The Health-illness perception for children consists of four categories, being hospital experience, concerns, and expectations from the hospital. Sick children defined health as feeling good and strong, illness as feeling bad, leaving family, friends and school, and being unable to do anything. They reported staying in the hospital as a bad, sad feeling and a terrible experience. They stated that they regret being separated from their family, school, friends, and teachers in the hospital, and they missed their lessons. Some of the expectations of the children in the hospital are toys in the room, a large playground in the hospital, and an opportunity to follow the lessons they missed at school from their room. Conclusion: In our study, it was determined that the most important concern of school-age children who were hospitalized was their separation from family, school, friends, and lessons. Aim: This study aimed at assessing the referral of sick young infants and children from the community, health posts and health centres to higher levels.Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in four of the largest Ethiopian regions from December 2016 to February 2017. Referral practices were assessed at each level in 46 districts of these regions. Interviews were supplemented by reviews of registers at health posts and health centres.Results: The women's development group leaders, who do not provide health services, referred half of the sick children they visited in the community to the health posts. The health extension workers referred 16% of the sick young infants and 6% of older infants and children to higher levels. From health centres, the health workers referred 6% of sick young infants and 1% of older infants and children to hospital. Many cases of possible severe bacterial infection were not referred to higher levels. A functional ambulance was available for a bit more than a third of the health centres.Conclusion: Referral practices of sick young infants and children at all levels were weak that may threaten the continued reduction of child mortality in Ethiopia. This article presents a summary of the internship report submitted to a Master's degree in Nursing of Children and Youth. Care in Paediatrics relates to a philosophy of care focused on the child/young person and their family. Being the parents the best caregivers, they become partners in the child caring. It is essential that Nurses support parents during lifecycle transitions and develop interventions that promote parenthood, aiming at equipping them with parental skills and knowledge so they can take care of their children in a disease situation. Goal: Analyze the Nurse's interventions when promoting parenthood, among parents with children in situation of disease, through evidence-based practice. Methodology: Systematic review of the literature, with research on scientific databases (2009 - 2014). Results: Evidences show the importance of caring focused on the family and their own complexity.The support given to the parents, the partnership and trust relationship, as well as the empowerment are crucial in the promotion of parenthood. This article it settles upon the thematic of positive parenting bearing parental capability. Emerged from work undertaken to acquire a master's degree in nursing health of children and young, and had it started with Stage II and Report, carried out under the Master's Degree in Nursing Health of Children and Young. It was defined as general purpose the understanding of the interventions developed by the nurse, laid on positive parenting, that promote the parental capability near the sick child. The analysis emerges from the critical reflection of the care practice, which allies to the exercise of the evidence-based practice. The question defined in PI(C)O structure "What interventions develops the nurse, based on positive parenting, that encourage parental capability near the sick child?" was the basis for a Systematic Literature Review. The survey was conducted in the EBSCO platform, following an established protocol, with a filter 2008/2014 and 3 primary studies came up. It concludes that interventions can be implemented in different spheres of care: attitude of nurses, knowledge, communication, parental involvement and parental emotional responses. Drawing on an ESRC funded study of children's experiences of hospital space this article explores the cultural politics of contemporary English childhood. Using the words and commentaries provided by both children and young people, the article argues that although, as patients, children and young people share the same hospital spaces, their experiences of them are quite different. Through mundane material and symbolic practices, a number of experiential continuities are created for the youngest children between life in hospital and life at home, continuities that work to downplay their identities as children who are sick. For young people, however, these practices are more problematic since the discourses of childhood that are recreated have little resonance with young people's own experiences and sense of self and identity. Thus this article provides evidence of the need for a more nuanced understanding of not only young people's needs in relation to hospital services, but also of the significance of understanding the ways in which particular constructions of 'the child' and 'childhood' are threaded through public discourses and come to be realized in institutional settings. This article focuses in the traumatic experiences of girls and boys hospitalized, which impact their perception of wellness, as well as how do they construct their reality during the internment. This is part of the hospital culture, institutional vision that influences the way for users to perceive and interact with them, then that the hospital becomes a transmitter of meanings which strengthen or weaken the role of patients and their families. The narrative of the events experienced during a medical placement shapes an active and daily process of reconstructing of the reality. The goal of the investigation was to analyze the narrative of girls and boys in infectious orthopaedics and paediatrics services to know how they perceive the hospital, and analyze the impact of narrative in the restructuring and resignification of the trauma experience. Methodology: we worked with five children and girls with ages between 7 and 14 years, interned in the field of infected pediatrics' and orthopedics of the civil hospital Fray Antonio Alcalde in Guadalajara, Mexico. The working sessions were individual and consecutive, with a duration of one hour and a half. For the exploration two interview guides were used, the first one covered life prior hospitalization and the hospital experience; the second one explored indicators of anxiety and strategies for confronting stress. The narrative of each child was analyzed using the methodology of Bertaux. Results: the factors that affected the perception of the hospitable culture were: the age of the participants, the internment time, previous hospitalizations, the capacity for confrontation and the duration of the received psychological support. It was observed that the narrative process allowed to the participants to go out of his saturated plot and to view the problematics from other perspectives and to identify positive aspects of the hospitalization like: constant familiar accompaniment, support of the medical personnel and paramedic, acquired learning and the importance of the hospital in his recovery. Thus the narrative is associated with a cultural process through which patients modify and resignify their traumatic experiences in order to cope with their health plan for life. It is well known that a sick child has a profound impact upon the family involved. What remains less clear is how that stress affects the partnership of the parents--their intimacy, health and wellbeing and who is responsible for supporting the couple? Clinicians working with sick children in a wide range of settings, are regularly faced with distressed couples in need of support or skilled help. Many work without the benefit of good support or supervision for themselves, or a counselling service that would be acceptable to couples. Added to these difficulties are a number of barriers to referral. It seems legitimate to suggest that a therapist with insights and skills in couple work and relationship issues, and an awareness of the value of a supportive supervisory relationship as an integral part of professional development, might consider offering similar support to clinicians. Abstract: This is my memoir as a sick child, hospitalized in the Pediatric ward of a large hospital, many years ago. The story tells about my friendship with another young patient, Jum’ah, a Bedouin child who suffered from Congenital Cyanotic Heart Disease, to whom the pediatric ward was Home. My Childish understanding of Jum’ah''s loneliness, anxiety and struggle to be loved and belonged are described in this narrative.
