The magnetisation behaviour of cyclically deformed and non-deformed Fe3Ge and Ni3Ge is examined at sufficiently low temperatures below the Curie point. Despite these two intermetallics having the same Ll2 structure. they are found to show quite different behaviour in their ferromagnetic properties; the spontaneous magnetisation (Ms) remains unaffected in the former whereas it decreases notably in the latter after cycle deformation. The origin of the difference is investigated and attributed to the difference in operative shear planes. These are mainly on {001} planes without the introduction of notable amounts of anti-phase boundary (APB) tubes in Fe3Ge and mainly on {111} planes with the introduction of it high density of APB tubes composed of {111} APBs in Ni3Ge. The effects of cyclic deformation on the high-field susceptibility χ and the coercive force (HC) are also discussed by taking into account the dislocation distributions introduced by the {001} and {111} slips. The metal-organic deposition (MOD) process using metal trifluoroacetate salts (TFA) has the advantages of low-cost and high-scalability for the fabrication of REBa2Cu3Oy (REBCO, RE: rare earth elements) superconducting coated conductors (CCs) with high critical current density, in principle, because of its non-vacuum process. For the magnetic applications of CCs such as motors, magnetic resonance imaging and superconducting magnetic energy storage, further improvement of superconducting performance under magnetic fields is required. However, the in-field superconducting performance of REBCO CCs derived from the TFA-MOD process had been inferior to those derived from the vapor-phase process. In order to improve the in-field performance, the size control of the artificial pinning centers has been known as an effective way. In the early stage, the BaZrO3 (BZO) material, which was one of the effective materials in the CCs by the vapor-phase process, was also introduced in the TFA-MOD-derived CCs. The unique feature of the BZO material in the TFA-MOD process is the shape. The BZO in the TFA-MOD process formed the particle shape, although in the vapor-phase process it has a rod shape with a long axis elongating along the thickness direction. In addition, a special heat treatment for refining the BZO particles was developed, which is called the ‘interim heat treatment’. This heating profile made the in-field characteristics higher, although they were still lower than those of the vapor-phase process. Then, the new MOD process including ‘ultra-thin once coating’ was recently developed for further refinement of the BZO particles. The characteristics of the new TFA-MOD-derived CCs in magnetic fields have become compatible with those of the CCs derived from the vapor-phase process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Band 7 (∼340 GHz) observations of the dense gas tracers HCN, HCO+, and CS in the local, single-nucleus, ultraluminous infrared galaxy IRAS 13120–5453. We find centrally enhanced HCN (4–3) emission, relative to HCO+ (4–3), but do not find evidence for radiative pumping of HCN. Considering the size of the starburst (0.5 kpc) and the estimated supernovae rate of ∼1.2 yr−1, the high HCN/HCO+ ratio can be explained by an enhanced HCN abundance as a result of mechanical heating by the supernovae, though the active galactic nucleus and winds may also contribute additional mechanical heating. The starburst size implies a high ΣIR of 4.7 × 1012L⊙ kpc−2, slightly below predictions of radiation-pressure limited starbursts. The HCN line profile has low-level wings, which we tentatively interpret as evidence for outflowing dense molecular gas. However, the dense molecular outflow seen in the HCN line wings is unlikely to escape the Galaxy and is destined to return to the nucleus and fuel future star formation. We also present modeling of Herschel observations of the H2O lines and find a nuclear dust temperature of ∼40 K. IRAS 13120–5453 has a lower dust temperature and ΣIR than is inferred for the systems termed “compact obscured nuclei (CONs)” (such as Arp 220 and Mrk 231). If IRAS 13120–5453 has undergone a CON phase, we are likely witnessing it at a time when the feedback has already inflated the nuclear ISM and diluted star formation in the starburst/active galactic nucleus core. In order to apply REBa2Cu3Oy (REBCO, RE = rare earth elements or Y) coated conductors in high magnetic field, coil-based applications, the isotropic improvement of their critical current performance with respect to the directions of the magnetic field under these operating conditions is required. Most applications operate at temperatures lower than 50 K and magnetic fields over 2 T. In this study, the improvement of critical current density (Jc) performance for various applied magnetic field directions was achieved by controlling the nanostructure of the BaHfO3 (BHO)-doped SmBa2Cu3Oy (SmBCO) films on metallic substrates. The corresponding minimum Jc value of the films at 40 K under an applied 3 T field was 5.2 MA cm−2, which is over ten times higher than that of a fully optimized Nb–Ti wire at 4.2 K. At 4.2 K, under a 17.5 T field, a flux pinning force density of 1.4 TN m−3 for B//c was realized; this value is among the highest values reported for REBCO films to date. More importantly, the Fp for B//c corresponds to the minimum value for various applied magnetic field directions. We investigated the dominant flux pinning centers of films at 4.2 K using the anisotropic scaling approach based on the effective mass model. The dominant flux pinning centers are random pinning centers at 4.2 K, i.e., a high pinning performance was achieved by the high number density of random pins in the matrix of the BHO-doped SmBCO films. We present the distribution and kinematics of the molecular gas in the circumnuclear disk (CND; 400 pc × 200 pc) of Centaurus A with resolutions of ∼5 pc (0.″3) and shed light onto the mechanism feeding the active galactic nucleus (AGN) using CO(3–2), HCO+(4–3), HCN(4–3), and CO(6–5) observations obtained with ALMA. Multiple filaments or streamers of tens to a hundred parsec scale exist within the CND, which form a ring-like structure with an unprojected diameter of 9″ × 6″ (162 pc × 108 pc) and a position angle P.A. ≃ 155°. Inside the nuclear ring, there are two leading and straight filamentary structures with lengths of about 30–60 pc at P.A. ≃ 120° on opposite sides of the AGN, with a rotational symmetry of 180° and steeper position–velocity diagrams, which are interpreted as nuclear shocks due to non-circular motions. Along the filaments, and unlike other nearby AGNs, several dense molecular clumps present low HCN/HCO+(4–3) ratios (≲0.5). The filaments abruptly end in the probed transitions at r ≃ 20 pc from the AGN, but previous near-IR H2(J = 1–0)S(1) maps show that they continue in an even warmer gas phase (T ∼ 1000 K), winding up in the form of nuclear spirals, and forming an inner ring structure with another set of symmetric filaments along the N–S direction and within r ≃ 10 pc. The molecular gas is governed primarily by non-circular motions, being the successive shock fronts at different scales where loss of angular momentum occurs, a mechanism that may feed efficiently powerful radio galaxies down to parsec scales. The critical current density (Jc) of YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO)-coated conductors in a magnetic field can be enhanced by the doping of flux-pinning centers in a metal organic deposition (MOD) process with trifluoroacetates (TFA). The size of these flux-pinning centers should be less than 10 nm to achieve commercial use due to the coherence length of YBCO at 77 K. In this paper, BaHfO3 (BHO) nanoparticles were introduced into YBCO films using the TFA-MOD method. Microstructures and the Jc properties of the films prepared using a two-step heating process at crystallization were compared with film prepared using a conventional one-step heating process. The two-step heating process produced 15 nm average-sized BHO nanoparticles in the film compared to 19 nm nanoparticles in a film prepared using a one-step process. It was revealed that the size of nanoparticles in the films could be miniaturized by improving the heating processes in the MOD method, and the miniaturized nanoparticles could contribute to increased Jc in magnetic fields. A high Tc superconducting induction/synchronous motor (HTS-ISM) is designed, fabricated and tested with the use of YBCO coated conductors for rotor bars. The structure of this motor is the same with that of the squirrel-cage induction motor. The YBCO coated conductor, 10 mm in width, is produced by means of the MOCVD process, and then such tape is divided into four pieces by using a laser cutting machine. Four cut tapes are bundled for one rotor bar, and commercialized Bi-2223/Ag tapes are utilized for end rings. The fabricated HTS rotor is installed in a conventional stator, and then various tests are carried out in liquid nitrogen. It is successfully observed that the fabricated YBCO HTS-ISM has a synchronous torque. The motor also has an almost constant torque curve because of the steep take-off of the electric field versus current density property. Detailed test results are reported and discussed.
