The impact of short-term exposure to air pollutants on the morbidity of schizophrenia, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, remains inadequately explored. The objective of this research was to investigate the relationship between short-term exposure to ambient air pollutants and the risk of schizophrenia hospitalization in Jingmen, China. We performed a time-stratified case-crossover study using daily records of hospital admissions due to schizophrenia in Jingmen Mental Health Center from 2015 to 2017. Environmental exposures to air pollutants and meteorological conditions on case and control days were estimated on the basis of measurements from ground monitoring stations. To investigate the relationship between short-term exposure to ambient air pollutants and the risk of hospitalization for schizophrenia, a conditional logistic regression model was employed. We performed subgroup analyses stratified according to sex, age groups, and season. In total, 4079 schizophrenia hospitalizations were recorded during the designated period. Increased risk of schizophrenia was merely associated with short-term exposure to SO2 and NO2. The estimated odds per interquartile range (IQR) increase in exposure was 1.112 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.033, 1.196) for SO2 (IQR = 12 µg/m3) and 1.112 (95% CI: 1.033, 1.197) for NO2 (IQR = 18 µg/m3) on lag-0 day. Greater air pollution-schizophrenia associations were observed among middle-aged and older adults (over 45 years of age) and during the cold season. This study added case-crossover evidence indicating that short-term exposure to ambient air pollution, specifically SO2 and NO2, is linked to a higher risk of hospital admissions for schizophrenia. The study of clinical biological indicators in bipolar disorder (BD) is important. In recent years, basic experiments have associated the pathophysiological mechanism of BD is related to mitochondrial dysfunction, but few clinical studies have confirmed this finding. The present study aimed to evaluate whether plasma circulating cell-free mitochondrial DNA (ccf-mtDNA) levels, which can represent the degree of mitochondrial damage in vivo, are altered in patients with BD in early onset and during treatment compared with controls. A total of 75 first-diagnosed drug-naive patients with BD and 60 HCs were recruited and followed up for 1 month. The clinical symptoms were assessed using HAMD, HAMA, and YMRS, and ccf-mtDNA levels were measured by qPCR before and after drug treatment in BD. (1) The plasma ccf-mtDNA levels in first-diagnosed drug-naive patients with BD increased compared with those in HCs (p = 0.001). (2) Drug treatment for 1 month can decrease the expression of ccf-mtDNA in BD (p < 0.001). (3) No significant correlation was observed between the changes in ccf-mtDNA levels and the improvement of clinical symptoms in BD after drug treatment. The plasma ccf-mtDNA level was increased in BD, and decreased after pharmacological treatment. These outcomes suggested that plasma ccf-mtDNA level is likely to be sensitive to the drug response in BD, and mitochondrial pathway is a potential target for further therapy. • Our results suggest that plasma ccf-mtDNA level was higher in BD and pharmacological treatment can partially ameliorate mitochondrial dysfunction in BD. • There was no significant correlation between the changes in ccf-mtDNA levels and the improvement of clinical symptoms in BD after drug treatment. • No significant difference was found in the ccf-mtDNA levels between different drug groups. The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically increased use of remote-delivered mental health services. This study identifies advantages and limitations of remote-delivered services on college campuses to inform mental health delivery post-pandemic. Methods: Clinicians (n = 30) were asked to evaluate COVID-19's impact on their work, environment, and wellness in an online survey. Qualitative data was coded using a thematic analysis approach, while quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Many clinicians reported benefits of remote services, including increased accessibility, greater convenience, no change in therapeutic alliance, and decreased stress for clinicians. Clinicians also experienced challenges such as social isolation, technological difficulties, and personal/family concerns. Clinicians envisioned a hybrid service combining online and in-person activities post-pandemic. Conclusions: Overall, remote-delivered mental health services on college campuses have potential in increasing treatment quality while highlighting a necessity for further research in hybrid mental health delivery. Food integrity is a major global public issue. China's food industry has demonstrated a sustained growth trend since the 1980s; however, the years between 1980 and 2012 witnessed a worrisome food integrity situation. Thankfully, in recent years, the situation is improving after the Chinese government's implementation of food safety regulations. In order to understand the current status of food integrity in China, this study analyzes the national food spot check data in 2016. The data covers almost all kinds of food in the market, and it reveals that overuse of food additives, microbial contamination and subpar food quality indicators are the top three factors limiting food integrity. Additionally, the paper discusses other challenges that affect food integrity in China, and we make suggestions for improving food integrity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To study the classification efficiency of using texture feature machine learning method in distinguishing solid lung adenocarcinoma (SADC) and tuberculous granulomatous nodules (TGN) that appear as solid nodules (SN) in non-enhanced CT images. 200 patients with SADC and TGN who underwent thoracic non-enhanced CT examination from January 2012 to October 2019 were included in the study, 490 texture eigenvalues of 6 categories were extracted from the lesions in the non-enhanced CT images of these patients for machine learning, the classification prediction model is established by using relatively the best classifier selected according to the fitting degree of learning curve in the process of machine learning, and the effectiveness of the model was tested and verified. The logistic regression model of clinical data (including demographic data and CT parameters and CT signs of solitary nodules) was used for comparison. The prediction model of clinical data was established by logistic regression, and the classifier was established by machine learning of radiologic texture features. The area under the curve was 0.82 and 0.65 for the prediction model based on clinical CT and only CT parameters and CT signs, and 0.870 based on Radiomics characteristics. The machine learning prediction model developed by us can improve the differentiation efficiency of SADC and TGN with SN, and provide appropriate support for treatment decisions. Background: The pathophysiological mechanism of cognitive impairments of bipolar disorder (BD) has not yet been completely revealed. It is well known that Vitamin D and physical activity (PA) are associated with BD. However, specific links between Vitamin D and cognitive deficits in BD are still unclear.Method: The serum levels of vitamin D were measured. The cognitive performances of 102 first-diagnosed and drug-naïve BD patients were evaluated for analysis. The repeatable battery for the assessment of neuropsychological status (RBANS) and the Stroop Color-Word test was used in this study. PA was collected by international physical activity questionnaire.Result: Patients with BD had high levels of serum vitamin D. Furthermore, immediate and delayed memory was negatively associated with vitamin D levels in patients' group. The serum levels of vitamin D in patients with low PA were positively associated with memory. However, increased PA attenuated the protective effect of vitamin D on executive cognition.Conclusion: It is concluded that the increased levels of vitamin D were observed in the serum of patients with BD. Thus, it is found that more PA is less beneficial to cognition of patients with BD than longer resting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Cognitive impairment and abnormal glycolipid metabolism are common clinical features of bipolar disorder (BD). The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between conventional glycolipid metabolism indicators and cognitive impairment in patients with BD.Methods: A total of 132 drug-naïve patients with BD and 129 healthy controls (HC) were recruited in the study. Five serum glycolipid metabolism indicators were measured and cognitive function was assessed using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) and the Stroop Color-Word Test (Stroop test) for each participant.Results: The scores of immediate memory, attention, language and delayed memory in BD group were significantly lower than those in HC group (P < 0.05). The triglyceride (TG) level in BD group was higher than that in HC group (P = 0.011), and the total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) levels were lower than those in HC group (P = 0.026; P = 0.001). Regression analysis showed that TG level was significantly correlated with RBANS total score (β = 0.245, P = 0.008), attention (β = 0.289, P = 0.03) and delayed memory (β = 0.221, P = 0.023). Fasting blood glucose (FBG) level was significantly correlated with language subscale score (β = -0.187, P = 0.046) in BD.Limitations: Cross-sectional design and limited control variables.Conclusions: Elevated FBG and TG levels may be associated with cognitive dysfunction in BD patients. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the role of Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in clinical and cognitive outcomes in medication-naïve patients with Bipolar type II disorder (BD II) and Major depressive disorder (MDD).Methods: 45 outpatients with BD II, 40 outpatients with MDD and 40 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited, and sociodemographic and clinical data were collected. Their BDNF serum levels were measured and analyzed with the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS).Results: BDNF levels were significantly lower in BD II patients than in MDD patients and HCs (p = 0.001). BD II and MDD patients had similar cognitive performance deficits shown on Attention (p = 0.001), Delayed memory (p = 0.001), and RBANS total score (p = 0.001). BDNF levels were positively associated with Visuospatial / constructional and Stroop color-word in BD II group, and with language in MDD group. The area under the curve (AUC) of the ROC analysis in BD II vs. MDD was 0.664, therefore, BDNF levels could not distinguish BD II from MDD.Conclusion: Our study showed the decreased serum BDNF in MDD and BD II patients, suggesting BDNF may be involved in the pathophysiology of MDD and BD II. BDNF and cognitive deficits are both of low efficiency in distinguishing BD II from MDD.
