Background and Aim: Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) has the potential for oncogenicity and has been associated with many malignancies, including prostate cancer. This study aimed to investigate the genomic prevalence of HCMV in prostate cancer tumors. Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, 31 patients with prostate cancer were enrolled along with 31 patients with benign prostate cancer as the control group. The presence of the HCMV genome was assessed using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The nested PCR test was also used to detect the UL55 virus gene. Purified PCR products were sequenced using the Sanger method by a commercial service provider (Pishgam Co.), and the results were analyzed using Chromase software. Results: The overall mean (±SD) prostate-specific antigen (PSA) value was 9 (±7.8) ng/Ml in patients with different stages of prostate cancer, and 9 (±3) ng/Ml in the control group (P=0.09). The prevalence of HCMV DNA was 19.3% (n=6) in the case group, and 6.5% (n=2) in the control group (P=0.14). The highest prevalence was observed in stage IIA (33.3%), followed by stages III (25%), and IIB (12.5%) (P=0.016). There were close phylogenetic relationships between Iranian HCMV isolates and several reference genotypes - the closest genetic relationship was observed with the KR 534207 genotype. Conclusion: The prevalence of HCMV in the prostate cancer group was markedly higher than that of the control group, although this difference was not significant. However, the higher prevalence of HCMV in prostate cancer patients compared to the control group is indicative of the possible role of HCMV in the development of prostate cancer. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The role of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infections in breast cancer pathology is not well understood. Our study aimed to investigate the association of HCMV and EBV infections with breast cancer and distinguish the types of positive EBV and LMP-1 samples in Iranian patients. METHODS: Seventy-two formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) breast cancer tissues were analyzed between December 2014 and April 2016. Samples were analyzed for HCMV and EBV using nested-PCR and conventional PCR assays, respectively. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software version 18. RESULTS: Overall, HCMV and EBV genomes were detected in 6.9% and 16.7% of FFPE breast cancer tissues, respectively. Clinical factors were not statistically associated with the presence of HCMV and EBV. CONCLUSION: In this study, we reported EBV and LMP-1 typing in breast carcinoma cases for the first time in Iran. BACKGROUND: Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) is one of the blood borne viruses. The virus can be transmitted to susceptible individuals by blood or blood products. The virus is not associated with significant disease in general population, while people with underlying problems such as immunodeficiency can cause anemia and arthritis. The current systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the overall prevalence of B19V DNA, anti-B19V IgG, and anti-B19V IgM antibodies in blood donors worldwide. METHODS: A systematic search was carried out in online databases for relevant studies from inception until March 30, 2019. Study selection was performed based on predesigned eligibility criteria. The proportion of B19V DNA, anti-B19V IgG, and anti-B19V IgM antibodies were pooled using the inverse variance method. All statistical analyses were performed using the R version 3.5.3, package "meta." RESULTS: According to the random effects model, the pool prevalence of B19V DNA, anti-B19V IgM, and anti-B19V IgG among blood donors was calculated to be 0.4% (95% confidence interval [CI] =0.3%-0.6%), 2.2% (95% CI = 1.3%-3.7%), and 50.1% (95% CI = 43.1%-57.1%), respectively. CONCLUSION: For the transmission of B19V through blood, the presence of the virus genome is required, and the present study showed that the prevalence of the virus genome in blood donors is <1%. Background: Numerous studies conducted over the past 30 years have pointed to the presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in gastric cancer samples. This study was aimed to provide a meta-analytic review of the prevalence of EBV in gastric cancer patients, and to clarify the relationship between EBV infection and gastric cancer.Methods: A literature search was performed electronically using online databases for English language publications until July 1, 2019. The pooled EBV prevalence and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using a random-effects model. To determine the association between EBV and gastric cancer, pooled odds ratio (OR) and its 95% CI were computed for case-control studies. Two separate analyses were performed on data from case-control studies with matched and non-match pairs designs to calculate the pooled estimates of ORs.Results: The pooled prevalence of EBV in 20,361 gastric cancer patients was 8.77% (95% CI: 7.73-9.92%; I2 = 83.2%). There were 20 studies with matched pairs design, including tumor and tumor-adjacent normal tissue pairs from 4116 gastric cancer patients. The pooled ORs were 18.56 (95% CI: 15.68-21.97; I2 = 55.4%) for studies with matched pairs design and 3.31 (95% CI: 0.95-11.54; I2 = 55.0%) for studies with non-matched pairs design. The proportion of EBV-associated gastric cancer among male cases was significantly higher than among female cases (10.83%, vs. 5.72%) (P < 0.0001). However, the pooled OR estimate for EBV-associated gastric cancer was significantly higher among females (21.47; 95% CI: 15.55-29.63; I2 = 0%) than in males (14.07; 95% CI: 10.46-18.93; I2 = 49.0%) (P = 0.06). EBV was more prevalent in the cardia (12.47%) and the body (11.68%) compared to the antrum (6.29%) (P = 0.0002).Conclusions: EBV infection is associated with more than 18 times increase the risk of gastric cancer. Although the prevalence of EBV was higher in male patients than in female patients with gastric cancer, women are more likely than men to develop EBV-associated gastric cancer. Our findings showed that using tumor-adjacent normal tissues as the control group provides more robust and accurate results regarding the relationship between EBV infection and gastric cancer. Annual influenza vaccination is the best means of prevention and control of influenza virus infection and its complications. Efforts to increase influenza vaccines coverage, especially in high-risk groups including young children, the elderly, pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals have led to substantial reduction in health burden, severity and duration of infection. This review will focus on vaccination coverage against influenza infection among different population groups in Iran. The increasing penetration of distributed and renewable generation presents power systems with a challenge of accommodating multiple inverter-based generators. Distributed generators (DGs), capable of operating in the islanded mode, are often installed in microgrids. However, a control system for operating multiple DGs in the islanded mode using voltage-sourced converters is a real challenge under uncertainties in load parameters, unbalanced phase conditions, and transients. This paper proposes a novel approach to decentralized control of multiple DGs. This approach is based on a combination of a voltage controller using model predictive control and a fast current controller using a discrete-time sliding-mode controller for limiting the inverter currents under overload conditions. Performance of the proposed control system is compared with a robust servomechanism program controller. The proposed control strategy provides fast tracking, robustness, and fast transient recovery in voltage and current under: 1) short-circuit conditions; 2) load transients; and 3) unbalanced loads. This study aims to determine the prevalence of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection among pregnant women as well as congenital infection of their newborns in Tehran. One hundred samples of blood sera from pregnant women were analyzed for the presence of HSV specific antibodies. Umbilical cord blood samples from the newborns were analyzed for the presence of HSV DNA using real-time PCR. HSV IgG and IgM antibodies were found in 97% and 2% of pregnant women, respectively. Of all the 100 cord blood samples, 6 were positive for HSV DNA in which 2 cases were from mothers who had detectable IgM. It was notable that all corresponding mothers of six HSV positive infants had detectable IgG antibodies in their sera. It was demonstrated that the presence of HSV DNA in cord blood of newborns could be a risk marker for maternal-fetal transmission of the virus in asymptomatic pregnant women. This paper proposes a novel approach to energy exchange between electric vehicle (EV) load and wind generation utilities participating in the day-ahead energy, balancing, and regulation markets. An optimal bidding/offering strategy model is developed to mitigate wind energy and EV imbalance threats, and optimize EV charging profiles. A new strategy model is based on optimizing decision making of a wind generating company (WGenCO) in selecting the best option among the use of the balancing or regulation services, the use of the energy storage system (ESS) and the use of all of them to compensate wind power deviation. Energy imbalance is discussed using conventional systems, ESS, and EV-Wind coordination; results are compared and analyzed. Stochastic intra-hour optimization is solved by mixed-integer linear programming (MILP). Uncertainties associated with wind forecasting, energy price, and behavior of EV owners based on their driving patterns, are considered in the proposed stochastic method and validated through several case studies. Photocatalytic antibacterial coats are considered among the best solutions to bacterial contamination of fabrics, with the drawback of reduced efficacy after continued use and washing. In the present study, the g-C 3 N 4 /ZnO (CNZ) nanocomposite has been introduced as a novel cotton fabric coating, with high durability, and CNZ nanopowders were synthesized using a two-step thermal synthesis process and directly coated onto cotton fabric using the sonication technique. The synthesized nanoparticles (NPs) were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analyzes. Besides, the SEM analysis confirmed the successful deposition of NPs on cotton fabric. The photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) stain was assessed as a functional test for the photocatalytic effectiveness of the coated fabric, then its antibacterial properties were evaluated under visible light, by direct contact with bacterial suspensions and culturing. The results revealed that the CNZ-coated cotton fabric containing 30% ZnO (CNZ-30) has significant photocatalytic antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli (gram-negative), and Staphylococcus aureus (gram-positive) bacteria. The bacterial reduction rate of CNZ-30 coated fabric for both E. coli and S. aureus was above 98%, even after 18 washing cycles. This excellent performance is attributed to the effective coupling of ZnO with g-C 3 N 4 , improved light absorption, and reduced e−/h+ pair recombination rates. This study novel coating method can offer an environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and simple process to manufacture hybrid CNZ antibacterial cotton in the textile industry. In this paper, first transient waves in the gas-insulated substation (GIS) are analyzed and methods for suppression of very fast transients (VFTs) in GISs are introduced. For suppressing VFTs, four methods are presented, including suppression by terminal components, capacitance components, adopting a resistor-fitted disconnector, and ferromagnetic rings. Finally, these approaches are compared with each other. These methods can be divided into two groups. The first group contains the methods (such as terminal components and reconfiguration) that can be used after installation of the GIS and during the operation of the GIS. The second group contains the methods (such as the resistor-fitted disconnector and ferromagnetic rings) that must be used as an extra limitation before installation and during the design of the GIS. Advantages of the first group are simplicity and the low cost of implementation along with producing minimal changes in the installed GIS. The main advantage of the second group is estimation of all factors during the design of the GIS. This paper presents a state-of-the-art distributed amplifier with coupled inductors in the gate line. The proposed coupled inductors, in conjunction with series-peaking inductors in cascode gain stages, provide bandwidth extension with flat gain response for the amplifier without any additional power consumption. On the other hand, gate-inductor coupling improves the input matching of the amplifier considerably. The detailed analysis and design methodology for the proposed distributed amplifier are presented. The new four-stage distributed amplifier, fabricated using an IBM O.18-μm complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor process, achieves a power gain of around 10 dB, input and output return losses better than 16 and 18 dB, respectively, a noise figure of 3.6-4.9 dB, and a power consumption of 21 mW over a 16-GHz flat 1-dB bandwidth. Viruses use various strategies and mechanisms to deal with cells and proteins of the immune system that form a barrier against infection. One of these mechanisms is the encoding and production of viral microRNAs (miRNAs), whose function is to regulate the gene expression of the host cell and the virus, thus creating a suitable environment for survival and spreading viral infection. miRNAs are short, single-stranded, non-coding RNA molecules that can regulate the expression of host and viral proteins, and due to their non-immunogenic nature, they are not eliminated by the cells of the immune system. More than half of the viral miRNAs are encoded and produced by Orthoherpesviridae family members. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) produces miRNAs that mediate various processes in infected cells to contribute to HCMV pathogenicity, including immune escape, viral latency, and cell apoptosis. Here, we discuss which cellular and viral proteins or cellular pathways and processes these mysterious molecules target to evade immunity and support viral latency in infected cells. We also discuss current evidence that their function of bypassing the host's innate and adaptive immune system is essential for the survival and multiplication of the virus and the spread of HCMV infection. Background and Aim: Currently, HIV, HBV, and HIV/HBV co-infection are important global health issues. It has been estimated that 2.7 million people are co-infected with HIV and HBV worldwide. In recent years, miRNAs have shown promising results as a research area. The current study aimed to investigate the expression level of miRNA-122, miRNA-149, miRNA-199a, and miRNA-let7 in HIV, HBV, HIV/HBV co-infected patients, and healthy controls. Materials and Methods: In the current study, miRNA expression levels were assessed in PBMC obtained from patients by real-time PCR. Results: The miRNA-122 was significantly upregulated in HIV/HBV co-infection patients compared with other groups (P<0.001). Also, miRNA-199a and miRNA-let7 were significantly down-regulated in all patient groups compared to the healthy controls (P< 0.001). Correlation analysis demonstrated significant negative correlations between the expression level of miR- 149 and miR-199a with HIV viral load (P<0.001) and HBV viral load, respectively (P<0.01). Conclusion: This preliminary study could reflect a limited perspective on the field of the miRNAs in HBV and HIV infection. Utilizing multi-carrier energies such as wind energy, electric vehicle (EV) and battery banks are a significant step toward a cleaner production. Hence, This paper proposes a stochastic-based decision-making framework for the efficient short-term management of smart energy hub (EH) in restructured power systems with high penetration of renewable energy. The electrical and natural gas carriers are the input of smart EH, while the electricity and heat demands are considered as the outputs. The EH, including battery storage system (BSS) and EV fleet, is managed in the regulation market and day-ahead (DA) horizons. The energy hub operator makes optimal decisions regarding the natural gas network and energy supply for the thermal and electricity customers. An optimal self-scheduling model is developed to take into account the day ahead (DA) and regulation markets (RM) and decisions regarding generations of electrical and thermal devices as well as EV aggregator decisions. The primary goal of the proposed framework is minimizing the cost of procuring electricity and heat energy carriers in DA and regulation markets, including upward/downward regulations via a stochastic mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) approach. In order to get the uncertainty around the exact outcomes of RM prices, wind generation, and EV patterns, the model also takes into account the conditional value at risk (CVaR) term. • Copper oxide (CuO-NPs) nanoparticles significantly inhibit HSV-1 infection. • The inhibition occurs when CuO-NPs are added after virus adsorption to the cells. • 100 μg/mL of CuO-NPs leads to 83.3% reduction in HSV-1 viral load. There are accumulating reports of the emergence of drug-resistant strains of HSV-1 that have become a barrier to successful treatment of HSV-1 infection. Therefore, there is a pressing need to identify and evaluate alternative antiherpetic agents. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) on HSV-1 infection. The MTT assay was applied to examine the cytotoxic effects of CuO-NPs on Vero cells. Antiherpetic potency was determined using the TCID50 and quantitative Real-Time PCR assays. To evaluate the inhibitory impact of CuO-NPs on the expression of viral antigens, an indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) was performed. Acyclovir was used as a reference drug in all experiments. Exposure of HSV-1 with CuO-NPs at the highest non-toxic concentration (100 μg/mL) resulted in 2.8 log10 TCID50 reduction in infectious virus titer as compared with virus control (P < 0.0001). This concentration of CuO-NPs was associated with 83.3% inhibition rate, which was estimated based on the HSV-1 viral load compared to virus control. Our findings demonstrated that CuO-NPs are associated with a significant antiviral potency against HSV-1. Purpose: Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) have always been suggested as one of the main causes of gastroenteritis in children. However, no comprehensive report on the global epidemiology of these viruses in pediatric gastroenteritis is available. Methods: A systematic search was conducted to obtain published papers from 2003 to 2023 in three main databases PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Results: The estimated global pooled prevalence of HAdV infection in children with gastroenteritis was 10% (95% CI: 9-11%), with a growing trend after 2010. The highest prevalence was observed in Africa (20%, 95% CI: 14–26%). The prevalence was higher in inpatients (11%; 95% CI: 8-13%) and patients aged 5 years old and younger (9%; 95% CI: 7-10%). However, no significant difference was observed between male and female patients (P = 0.63). The most prevalent species was found to be the species F (57%; 95% CI: 41-72%). The most common HAdVs observed in children with gastroenteritis were types 40/41, 38, and 2. Analysis of case-control studies showed an association between HAdV and gastroenteritis in children (OR: 2.28, 95% CI; 1.51–3.44). Conclusion: This study provided valuable insights into the importance of HAdVs in children with gastroenteritis, especially in hospitalized and younger children. Background: Currently available anti-influenza drugs are often associated with limitations such as toxicity and the appearance of drug-resistant strains. Therefore, there is a pressing need for the development of novel, safe and more efficient antiviral agents. In this study, we evaluated the antiviral activity of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) and PEGylated zinc oxide nanoparticles against H1N1 influenza virus. Methods: The nanoparticles were characterized using the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, x-ray diffraction analysis, and electron microscopy. MTT assay was applied to assess the cytotoxicity of the nanoparticles, and anti-influenza activity was determined by TCID50 and quantitative Real-Time PCR assays. To study the inhibitory impact of nanoparticles on the expression of viral antigens, an indirect immunofluorescence assay was also performed. Results: Post-exposure of influenza virus with PEGylated ZnO-NPs and bare ZnO-NPs at the highest non-toxic concentrations could be led to 2.8 and 1.2 log10 TCID50 reduction in virus titer when compared to the virus control, respectively (P < 0.0001). At the highest non-toxic concentrations, the PEGylated and unPEGylated ZnO-NPs led to inhibition rates of 94.6 and 52.2%, respectively, which were calculated based on the viral loads. There was a substantial decrease in fluorescence emission intensity in viral-infected cell treated with PEGylated ZnO-NPs compared to the positive control. Conclusions: Taken together, our study indicated that PEGylated ZnO-NPs could be a novel, effective, and promising antiviral agent against H1N1 influenza virus infection, and future studies can be designed to explore the exact antiviral mechanism of these nanoparticles. Anelloviruses (AVs) that infect the human population are members of the Anelloviridae family. They are widely distributed in human populations worldwide. Torque teno virus (TTV) was the first virus of this family to be identified and is estimated to be found in the serum of 80–90% of the human population. Sometime after the identification of TTV, Torque teno mini virus (TTMV) and Torque teno midi virus (TTMDV) were also identified and classified in this family. Since identifying these viruses, have been detected in various types of biological fluids of the human body, including blood and urine, as well as vital organs such as the liver and kidney. They can be transmitted from person to person through blood transfusions, fecal-oral contact, and possibly sexual intercourse. Recent studies on these newly introduced viruses show that although they are not directly related to human disease, they may be indirectly involved in initiating or exacerbating some human population-related diseases and viral infections. Among these diseases, we can mention various types of cancers, immune system diseases, viral infections, hepatitis, and AIDS. Also, they likely use the microRNAs (miRNAs) they encode to fulfill this cooperative role. Also, in recent years, the role of proliferation and their viral load, especially TTV, has been highlighted to indicate the immune system status of immunocompromised people or people who undergo organ transplants. Here, we review the possible role of these viruses in diseases that target humans and highlight them as important viruses that require further study. Background and Aim: Behcet's disease is rare and can cause inflammation in blood vessels throughout the body. Although various studies have been conducted on the possible association between BD and various pathogens such as viruses, the major cause of this disease is still unknown. Our study aimed to evaluate the presence of B19 in Behcet patients and healthy carriers. Materials and Methods: For the current case-control study, we examined 103 samples including 54 males and 49 females, and 40 healthy control samples. At first, all samples were checked by ELISA technique and then, the level of B19 DNA was confirmed by Realtime PCR. Finally, the results of patients were compared to healthy control samples. Results: A wide range of clinical manifestations was observed in the BD patient group. We found statistical differences in the prevalence of B19 IgG between patients and healthy populations (84.46% vs. 55%, respectively). However, the prevalence of B19 IgM was similar between patients and healthy control groups (4.58% vs. 2.5%, respectively). We couldn’t observe any detectable levels of B19 DNA in the patient and healthy carrier groups. Conclusion: Our results failed to establish a relationship between B19 infection and BD development, but such a correlation has been reported. Background and Objectives: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of lower respiratory tract infection in many populations, including military recruits receiving basic training. Therefore, this study was set out to determine the molecular epidemiology, genotype and phylogenetic features of RSVs in patients with respiratory infection as a case study. Materials and Methods: In this study, military barracks of Tehran, Iran, between January to March 2017 exposed to respiratory diseases were used for sampling. Throat swabs were taken, a reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RTPCR) assay was performed to identify RSV and then the genotyping and phylogenetic analyses of RSVs in patients with a respiratory infection. Results: Among 400 Iranian military trainees with respiratory symptoms, RSV infection was identified in 2.75% (11/400) using RT-PCR. Sequencing showed the incidence of type A (2.5%, n=10) to be much higher than type B (0.25%, n=1); Sore throat was the most common symptom among RSV patients. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the majority of strains from the studied samples were more consistent with those from the Philippines and the US strains. Conclusion: This study is the first to document RSV as a major cause of acute respiratory illness among military trainees in Iran. The prevalence of RSV is substantial in the cold season and the prevalence of genotype A is dominant in the country, leading to take essential steps in preparing a preventive vaccine against this viral infection. We determined the molecular prevalence and genotype distribution of human adenovirus (HAdV) among children under five years of age with gastroenteritis in Iran. One hundred stool samples from children hospitalized were tested by PCR for adenovirus, and some of the positive samples were sequenced to determine the specific genotype. HAdV DNA was found in 15 samples (15%). The highest and the lowest prevalence of HAdV was observed in the age groups 24–60 months (n = 6; 40%) and 7–12 months (n = 2; 13.3%), respectively (p = 0.01). Nine HAdV-positive samples were sequenced, of which four isolates were HAdV type 2 and five isolates were HAdV type 41. HAdV was most common in the 24–60-month-old children. Of the samples sequenced, we found only types 2 and 41. Our results show that in addition to HAdV types 40 and 41, HAdV type 2 may also play a role in causing gastroenteritis in children. Background and Objectives: Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular pathogen. Infection with C. trachomatis in pregnant women can result in maternal and fetal death, due to pelvic inflammatory disease. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate this infection in pregnant women and identify circulating genotypes of C. trachomatis in Tehran, Iran. Materials and Methods: Endocervical swabs were obtained from 101 pregnant women and tested by PCR assay to detect cryptic plasmid gene. Positive isolates were analyzed for C. trachomatis genotypes through amplification and sequencing of the omp1 gene and alignment with deposited sequences in Gene Bank. Results: Infection with C. trachomatis was observed in 11 cases, yielding an overall prevalence of 10.8% in total. The majority of infected women were asymptomatic and the rate of infection was found more in women at the age of ≥30 years. However, no statistical association was found between C. trachomatis infection and risk factors in pregnant women. Analysis of isolated sequences revealed genotypes E (44.4%), D and F (both 22.2%), and K (11.2%) as main genotypes of C. trachomatis in this region. Conclusion: Results of this study showed the prevalence of C. trachomatis infections among pregnant women is relatively high. The present study aimed to scrutinize the expression profile of inflammatory-related genes (IFI-16, NOTCH2, CXCL8, and THBS1) from acute to post-acute stage of this infectious epidemic. The current cross-sectional study consisted of 53 acute-phase COVID-19 patients and 53 healthy individuals between February and March 2021. The extraction of total RNA was performed from PBMC specimens and also expression level of selected genes (IFI-16, NOTCH2, CXCL8, and THBS1) was evaluated by real-time PCR. Subsequently, levels of these factors were re-measured six weeks after the acute phase to determine if the levels of chosen genes returned to normal after the acute phase of COVID-19. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was plotted to test potential of genes as a diagnostic biomarker. The expression levels of inflammatory-related genes were significantly different between healthy and COVID-19 subjects. Besides, a significant higher CXCL8 level was found in the acute-phase COVID-19 compared to post-acute-phase infection which may be able to be considered as a potential biomarker for distinguishing between the acute phases from the post-acute-phase status. BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a leading cause of death around the world. Micro-ribonucleic acid (miRNA) can be involved in forming of atherosclerotic plaques, inflammation, cholesterol metabolism, and other mechanisms involved in CAD development. This study aimed to evaluate the expression level of miR-22, miR-30c, miR-145, and miR-519d and their possible association with inflammatory markers among patients with CAD. METHODS: The expression level of miR-22, miR-30c, miR-145, miR-519d, interleukin 6 (IL-6), and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) was determined in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from 46 patients with CAD and 39 healthy controls using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay. RESULTS: 53.8% (n = 21) and 52.2% (n = 24) of controls and cases were men, respectively; the mean age was 59.8 ± 7.4 and 57.0 ± 9.8 years, respectively. The miRNA expression pattern of each group showed significantly different expression profiles. In the CAD patients group, miR-22, miR-30c, and miR-145 were down-regulated compared to the control group. On the opposite, miR-519d was up-regulated in patients with CAD compared to the control group. Our results also showed that the expression levels of IL-6 and TGF-β were up-regulated among patients with CAD compared to the control group. In addition, the expression of miR-145 and miR-519d had a significantly negative and positive correlation with TGF-β and IL-6, respectively. Background: Limited sources of fresh water necessitate the application of health policies for treatment and decontamination of human sewage for further use. A wide variety of infectious agents, including bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses, can be found in sewage. Enteric viruses such as hepatitis A virus (HAV) can survive the current treatments and infect susceptible hosts. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate HAV contamination in human sewage before and after treatment in the wastewater treatment plant of Ekbatan town in Tehran, Iran, and analyze the phylogenetic properties of the identified viruses. Methods: Over a 12-month period, we collected the wastewater samples including influent, before chlorination, and effluent, from the wastewater treatment plant of Ekbatan town in Tehran, Iran. Ribonucleic acid (RNA) extraction, complementary deoxyribonucleic acid (cDNA) synthesis, and semi-nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were performed to identify HAV contamination. Phylogenetic analysis was performed to investigate subgenotypes of the virus. Results: HAV was detected in all influents and samples before chlorination, while the virus was detected in 50% of the effluent samples. All detected viruses belonged to subgenotype IB. Conclusions: Investigating the presence of HAV in sewage provides a general picture of the virus spread in the population of interest. HAV was detected in all influent samples, indicating that the infection is endemic in this area all year round. Sea cucumber has antiviral activities against various viruses including herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). The purpose of the current study was to determine the chemical profile and inhibitory effects of tegument ethanolic extract of Holothuria parva on HSV-1 infection and to elucidate the mechanism of antiviral action of this marine invertebrate. Cytotoxic activity of the extract on Vero cell line was determined using the methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) method. The different components in H. parva were determined by GC-MS analysis. To assess the antiviral activity of the extract, MTT and 50% tissue culture infective dose (TCID50) were applied. Finally, computational molecular docking was performed to screen the potential binding ability of extract contents with HSV-1 surface glycoproteins and host cell surface receptors. Using MTT assay, the non-cytotoxic concentration of the extract was measured 46.5 μg/mL. Octadecanoic acid 2-hydroxy-1-(hydroxymethyl) ethyl ester and 2′,6′-acetoxylidide were two major constituents in the H. parva extract. Pre-treatment of HSV-1 with the ethanolic extract of H. parva led to a 2.1 log10 TCID50 reduction in virus titers when compared to the control group (P = 0.002). The log10 TCID50 reductions relative to the control group for co-penetration and post-penetration assays were 1.5 (P = 0.009) and 0.7 (P = 0.09), respectively. The tegument ethanolic extract of H. parva has significant antiviral properties against HSV-1. Docking analysis demonstrated that compounds of the extract [lidocaine and 2-hydroxy-1-(hydroxymethyl) ethyl ester octadecanoic acid] may cover similarly both virus and host cells binding domains leading to interference in virus attachment to cell receptors. Background: Female sex workers (FSWs) are amongst the most susceptible groups to acquire human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and consequently, to develop cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and cervical cancer. This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis to provide estimates of the pooled prevalence of HPV infection and the distribution of HPV types among FSWs across the world.Methods: Five computerized databases were searched for relevant studies published since the inception date of databases to September 2019. The pooled HPV prevalence was calculated by the random effect model described by DerSimonian-Laird. Subgroup analysis was performed to identify the probable sources of heterogeneity. The meta-analysis was performed using the "Metaprop" function in the R package Meta.Results: Sixty-two studies involving 21,402 FSWs from 33 countries were included in this meta-analysis, and the pooled HPV prevalence was 42.6% (95% confidence interval (CI): 38.5-46.7%). HPV-16 (10.1, 95% CI: 8.2-12.5%), HPV-52 (7.9, 95% CI: 5.9-10.7%), and HPV-53 (6.0, 95% CI: 4.4-8.1%) were the most common high-risk HPV types identified among FSWs. The pooled estimated prevalence of HPV infection among FSWs before and after 2010 were slightly different, 43.6% (95% CI: 36.1-51.4%) and 41.9% (95% CI: 37.2-46.8%), respectively.Conclusion: Due to the high prevalence of HPV infection, particularly with high-risk types, FSWs have a great susceptibility to the development of cervical and vaginal cancers. Furthermore, they can transmit their infection to their clients, which may result in a high prevalence of HPV and the incidence of HPV-associated malignancies among the general population. Hepatitis B virus (HBV), along with Hepatitis C virus chronic infection, represents a major risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development. However, molecular mechanisms involved in the development of HCC are not yet completely understood. Recent studies have indicated that mutations in CTNNB1 gene encoding for β-catenin protein lead to aberrant activation of the Wnt/ β-catenin pathway. The mutations in turn activate several downstream genes, including c-Myc, promoting the neoplastic process. The present study evaluated the mutational profile of the CTNNB1 gene and expression levels of CTNNB1 and c-Myc genes in HBV-related HCC, as well as in cirrhotic and control tissues. Mutational analysis of the β-catenin gene and HBV genotyping were conducted by direct sequencing. Expression of β-catenin and c-Myc genes was assessed using real-time PCR. Among the HCC cases, 18.1% showed missense point mutation in exon 3 of CTNNB1, more frequently in codons 32, 33, 38 and 45. The frequency of mutation in the hotspots of exon 3 was significantly higher in non-viral HCCs (29.4%) rather than HBV-related cases (12.7%, P = 0.021). The expression of β-catenin and c-Myc genes was found upregulated in cirrhotic tissues in association with HBV infection. Mutations at both phosphorylation and neighboring sites were associated with increased activity of the Wnt pathway. The results demonstrated that mutated β-catenin caused activation of the Wnt pathway, but the rate of CTNNB1 gene mutations was not related to HBV infection. Although an increasing number of studies have been conducted to evaluate the association between human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and distribution of HPV types worldwide with the risk of prostate cancer (PC), the results remain inadequate. Hence, we investigated the association between HPV infection and PC risk using a meta‐analysis. Relevant studies from January 1990 to December 2016 were searched in PubMed, Web of sciences, and Scopus databases. Pooled odds ratio (OR) and their corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated to find the association between the prevalence of HPV and prostate cancer risk. To do so, data from 24 studies with 5546 prostate cancer cases were pooled in order to evaluate the heterogeneity of chief parameters including study region, specimen type, HPV DNA source, detection technique, publication calendar period, and Gleason score. All statistical analyses were performed using STATA 11 and MedCalc 13. A significant positive association was found between HPV infection and PC risk (OR = 1.281; P = 0.026). The genotype 16 was more frequently found in patients with PC which significantly increased the cancer risk (OR = 1.60; P < 0.001). Age 65 and older could significantly escalate PC risk (OR = 3.564; P < 0.001). Background: Some studies implicate rotavirus infection as a trigger for the development of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in children, however findings are controversial. Objectives: We investigated the link between rotavirus infection and autoantibodies against islet antigens and T1DM in children. Methods: Serum samples from 80 new-onset diabetic and 80 nondiabetic children were screened for anti-rotavirus IgG, anti-GAD65 and anti-IA-2 autoantibodies using ELISA kits. Results: Positivity percentages of anti-rotavirus IgG detection in diabetic and nondiabetic children were 51.3% and 35.0%, respectively (p = 0.03). The mean anti-GAD65 and anti-IA-2 antibody titers in anti-rotavirus IgG positive samples were statistically higher than that the anti-rotavirus IgG negative samples. A positive correlation was found between anti-rotavirus IgG and anti-GAD65 antibody levels (p = 0.004; r = 0.22). Human astrovirus (HAstV) is an important causative agent of gastroenteritis in humans, which mainly infects young children and the elderly. The goal of this study was to conduct a meta-analytic review of the prevalence of HAstV amongst patients with gastroenteritis, and to shed light on the connection between HAstV infection and gastroenteritis. Systematic literature searches were conducted to identify all potentially relevant studies recorded up to April 8th, 2022. For study weighting, the inverse variance method was employed and the random-effects model was applied to evaluate data. For case-control studies, the pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated to establish the relationship between HAstV infection and gastroenteritis. Among 302423 gastroenteritis patients from 69 different countries, the overall pooled prevalence of HAstV infection was 3.48% (95% CI: 3.11%-3.89%). Case-control approach was used in 39 investigations, and the overall prevalence of HAstV infection among the 11342 healthy controls was 2.01% (95% CI: 1.40%-2.89%). Gastroenteritis and HAstV infection were associated with a pooled OR of 2.16 (95% CI: 1.72–2.71; P < 0.0001; I2 = 33.7%). The most commonly found HAstV genotypes in gastroenteritis patients were HAstV1 (62.18%), HAstV7 (33.33%), and HAstV-MLB1 (17.43%). The frequency of HAstV infection was the highest in children under the age of five, and in developing countries. The prevalence rate of HAstV was not influenced by gender. BACKGROUND: The etiology and molecular mechanisms involved in the development of breast cancer still remain poorly understood. Some epidemiological studies have shown an association between human papillomavirus (HPV) and breast cancer. However, the findings are controversial. OBJECTIVE: Our study was aimed to investigate the presence of HPV DNA in breast carcinomas of Iranian women. METHODS: In total, 72 samples of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues of breast cancer collected between December 2014 and April 2016 were examined. HPV DNA detection was performed by nested-PCR assay. Next, positive samples were subjected to genotyping by the CLART HPV2 microarray system. All statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS v.18.0. RESULTS: HPV DNA was detected in 4/72 (5.55%) samples. Clinical factors were not statistically associated with HPV presence. However, CLART HPV2 microarray assay failed to determine the genotype of any positive samples. CONCLUSION: The low frequency of HPV detected in our study does not support an association between breast carcinoma and HPV infection. However, it is possible that HPV may be responsible for breast carcinogenesis only in small percentage of all breast cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to determine the prevalence rate of influenza virus from different parts of Middle East region, and present an overall relative frequency (RF) for this region. Methods: The authors performed a systematic literature review from several reliable databases such as PubMed, ISI Web of Science and Scopus during 2000-2016. Furthermore, the keywords of this research were 'Influenza', 'Subtype', 'Seroprevalence', 'Incidence', 'Seroepidemiology', 'H1N1', 'H3N2', 'H5N1', 'H9N2', 'Middle- East' and 'Meta-analysis'. The reported data were selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: The authors selected 71 studies out of 1147 for the present review. The overall estimation of the prevalence of influenza virus was 10.2% [95% confidence interval (CI): 10.1%-10.3%]. However, based on our records, the evident heterogeneity of influenza virus was observed among the studies (Cochran Q test, P value <.001 and I-squared = 100%). It should be noted that influenza virus infection's RF varied from 0.5% in Qatar to 70% in Syria. Conclusions: The results of this review are remarkable, they show that influenza infection RF is variable due to several factors. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and any potential association between Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and colorectal cancer (CRC). A systematic literature search was performed by finding relevant cross-sectional and case-control studies from main online databases. Heterogeneity, odds ratio (OR), and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were applied to all studies through meta-analysis and forest plots. The analysis was performed using STATA Software v.14.1. Twenty-three articles were included in the meta-analysis, eight of them were case/control and 15 were cross-sectional. The pooled prevalence of EBV among 1954 CRC patients was 18% (95% CI: 12%–26%; I2 = 93.14%). Furthermore, in geographical regions, the highest and lowest prevalence of EBV was observed in South America 30% (95% CI: 18%–43%) and Africa 0% (95% CI: 0%–5%), respectively. An association was found between EBV infection and CRC [OR = 3.4 (95% CI (1.13–10.27); I2 = 72.3%)]. EBV infection is associated with CRC and can be considered a potential risk factor for the development of CRC. Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common and health-threatening cancers in men worldwide. The human papillomavirus (HPV) is considered one of the organisms with the potential to be involved in the progression of this cancer. In the present study, we evaluated the association between the expression levels of HPV genes with the expression of selected cellular miRNAs (miR-19a, miR-21, miR-23b, miR-34a, miR-150–5p, and miR-155) and their targets genes (P53, Rb, c-Myc, TIMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-9, PDCD4, Bcl-2, and Survivin) in PCa tissue samples. HPV detection and genotyping were performed on the tissues of 112 PCa patients and 39 healthy individuals. The expression profile of miRNA was evaluated by SYBR Green-based real-time PCR. As well Human Survivin ELISA Kit was utilized to determine the concentrations of Retinoblastoma, P53, survivin, Bcl-2, c-Myc, TIMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-9, and PDCD4 in the prostate tissues. According to our findings, HPV genome was detected in 28.7% (21/73) of PCa tissue specimens and 17.94% (7/39) control samples. There was no significant association between the presence of HPV infection with PCa (OR = 2.01, 95%CI = 0.8–5.68, P = 0.102). We found that mean expression level of miR-19a (3.7 ± 4.3, p-value: 0.0007), and −21 (2.5 ± 2.8, p-value<0.0001) were significantly higher and miR-23b (−2.14 ± 3.08, p-value: 0.003) and −34a (−3.12 ± 3.28, p-value: 0.0001) levels were significantly lower in PCa tissue samples than in control tissue samples.
