The need for hydrokinetic turbine wake characterisation and their environmental impact has led to a number of studies. However, a small number of them have taken into account mobile sediment bed effects. The aim of the present work is to study the impact of the presence of a horizontal-axis three-bladed turbine with the flow and a mobile sediment bed. We use a series of laboratory experiments with a scaled modelled turbine installed in a flume with a mobile sandy bed at the bottom. Acoustic instruments were used to monitor flow, suspended sediment and bed behaviour. Results show a velocity decrease of about 50% throughout the water column and no flow recovery after a distance of 15 rotor diameters. Clearly visible ripples in the absence of the model turbine were replaced by horseshoe-shaped scour pit in the near wake region, and a depositional heap in the far wake. Suspended sediment differences were recorded in the streamwise direction with a possible effect of the wake as far as 15 rotor diameters. These results imply potentially important effects on the efficiency of turbine arrays, if the flow were to be lower than expected, on turbine foundations and modify coastal sediment transport. Disposal quantities of organic wastes at the Brooklawn Site in Louisiana are suspected to equal nearly 1.45 × 108Kg, making this site one of the most contaminated dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) sites in the world. Remedial activities at the site include groundwater and DNAPL extraction from recovery wells. DNAPL recovery has markedly declined in recent years, with many of the peripheral wells showing negligible recovery of organic liquids. Three-dimensional simulations of DNAPL movement in the subsurface were conducted using the STOMP simulator, including a new coupled-well model. The objectives of this modeling effort were to (1) determine the fate and transport of infiltrated DNAPL, and (2) measure the effects of active recovery through DNAPL pumping. A detailed three-dimensional geologic model of the Brooklawn primary DNAPL disposal area was developed and used as the framework for DNAPL simulations. Additionally, site-specific data were obtained to determine the most important hydraulic properties of the subsurface related to DNAPL movement and formation of entrapped DNAPL in the laboratory. In addition to a simulation using the best available subsurface information, several sensitivity simulations were conducted to assess the effects on DNAPL migration. These simulations include DNAPL pumping, well screen extension, an alternative geology, increased DNAPL density, lower DNAPL viscosity, and more-permeable sand and silt deposits. Results of the simulations were compared to field data that define the extent of DNAPL movement based on where DNAPL has been extracted in the site recovery wells. The model simulations show that pumping has a negligible effect on subsurface DNAPL saturations and movement. Pumped DNAPL volumes diminish rapidly due to the limited radius of influence of the wells and movement of the DNAPL out of the zone of influence of the wells with a maximum radius of influence of about 6 m. The numerical analysis also demonstrates that it is impractical to extend existing wells or install new wells to retrieve enough DNAPL to affect the overall extent of DNAPL movement. Field measurements of the resuspension of medium/coarse sand by orthogonal wave–currents in approximately 20 m water depth are presented and discussed. Velocity squared-suspended sediment cospectra indicate resuspension events occur at incident wave frequencies O(12 s) and at lower frequencies O(60 s) corresponding approximately to wave groups. Wave run-length parameters, determined for six wave records, are used to quantify bottom sediment response to wave group forcing. Results show that under groups of more than five waves, average suspended sediment concentration values, C, are approximately three times larger than values measured beneath a single wave of comparable height. Analyses demonstrate that the apparent in situ grain settling velocity also increases under groups of waves. A simple empirical expression, which quantifies the wave group influence on the near-bed ‘reference’ suspended sediment concentration, is presented. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Strong tidal currents, shallow water, waves and mobile bed sediments present in many tidal inlets prevent deployment of instrumentation using benthic frames and restrict measurements that can be obtained safely from a boat and thus data from these environments remain scarce. Recent deployments of the new POL Instrument Package (PIP) from a jack-up barge have provided a solution to this problem. Here the performance of the various sensors on the PIP is assessed critically and the degree to which near-bed processes are affected by the PIP is investigated by comparing measured and predicted flows, bedforms and rates of sediment transport. Ripples and small-scale bedforms are ubiquitous in shallow water environments under the combined action of currents and waves. Small scale processes linked to their formation and migration are interconnected with sediment transport at larger scales (e.g. tens of metres to kilometres), both resulting in and being affected by large scale sediment transport and geomorphological evolution. The lower shoreface provides a key link between coasts and continental shelves, but the contribution of ripples and small-scale bedforms to sediment transport in this region has yet to be fully addressed. This work presents a study of sediment dynamic processes on the lower shoreface in the presence of small-scale bedforms. Observations were made during the winter of 2017 on the lower shoreface of Perranporth Beach, which is in the south west of the UK and exposed to Atlantic waves. The analysis of morphological expressions and the variability of ripples under waves, currents and wave-current conditions are assessed. Ripple morphology and associated dynamics are analysed for their potential contribution to the exchange of sediment between the lower and the upper shoreface. In the present study it was observed that even though ripples were evolving depending on the wave-current forcing, little ripple migration was observed due to low wave skewness. The implication is that ripple migration and bedload transport are only a small contribution to onshore sediment transport under low to moderate energy conditions. However, during more energetic conditions, ripples were washed out and the wave skewness increased, resulting in onshore sediment transport under a sheet flow regime. This suggests that ripple formation and migration can have little impact on the cross-shore supply of sediment from the lower shoreface to the upper shoreface and that more energetic wave conditions are required to significantly transport sediment towards the beach. • High-resolution observations on the seabed reveal 2D and 3D wave vortex ripples in a macrotidal sandy lower shoreface. • The morphological ripple transitions provide assessment of sediment transport regime thresholds. • The hypothesis of ross-shore sediment supplied from the lower to the upper shoreface through ripple migration is not supported.
