Copper(II) complexes with stable nitroxide radicals are capable of magnetostructural spin-crossover like anomalies induced by external stimuli. Photoswitching in such systems is particularly important; however, retrieving the properties of photoinduced states is challenging and requires development of novel approaches. In this work, we investigate the exchange interactions in metastable photoinduced states of two compounds containing copper(II)–nitroxide dyads. Using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) with photoexcitation we obtain temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility in the photoinduced state and estimates for the corresponding values of exchange coupling in the studied complexes. The interplay between intra- and inter-cluster exchange couplings is considered and analyzed. The proposed methodology is applicable also to other photoswitchable exchange-coupled systems. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) station at the Novosibirsk Free Electron Laser (NovoFEL) user facility is described. It is based on X-band (∼9 GHz) EPR spectrometer and operates in both Continuous Wave (CW) and Time-Resolved (TR) modes, each allowing detection of either direct or indirect influence of high-power NovoFEL light (THz and mid-IR) on the spin system under study. The optics components including two parabolic mirrors, shutters, optical chopper and multimodal waveguide allow the light of NovoFEL to be directly fed into the EPR resonator. Characteristics of the NovoFEL radiation, the transmission and polarization-retaining properties of the waveguide used in EPR experiments are presented. The types of proposed experiments accessible using this setup are sketched. In most practical cases the high-power radiation applied to the sample induces its rapid temperature increase (T-jump), which is best visible in TR mode. Although such influence is a by-product of THz radiation, this thermal effect is controllable and can deliberately be used to induce and measure transient signals of arbitrary samples. The advantage of tunable THz radiation is the absence of photo-induced processes in the sample and its high penetration ability, allowing fast heating of a large portion of virtually any sample and inducing intense transients. Such T-jump TR EPR spectroscopy with THz pulses has been previewed for the two test samples, being a useful supplement for the main goals of the created setup. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Molecular magnets based on copper(ii) ions and stable nitroxide radicals exhibit promising switchable behavior triggered by a number of external stimuli; however, their spin-state-correlated optical properties vital for photoinduced switching have not been profoundly investigated to date. Herein, the electronic absorption spectra of single crystals of three representatives of this unique family are studied experimentally and theoretically in the visible and near-IR regions. We established that the color of the complexes is mainly determined by optical properties of the nitroxide radicals, whereas the Cu(hfac)2 fragment contributes to the near-IR range with the intensity smaller by an order of magnitude. The thermochromism of these complexes evident upon thermal spin state switching is mainly caused by a spectral shift of the absorption bands of the nitroxides. The vibrational progression observed in the visible range for single crystals as well as for solutions of pure nitroxides is well reproduced by DFT calculations, where the C–C stretching mode governs the observed progression. The analysis of the spectra of single crystals in the near-IR region reveals changes in the energy and in the intensity of the copper(ii) d–d transitions, which are well reproduced by SOC-NEVPT2 calculations and owe to the flip of the Jahn–Teller axis in the coordination environment of copper. The development and technological applications of molecular spin systems require versatile experimental techniques to characterize and control their static and dynamic magnetic properties. In the latter case, bulk spectroscopic and magnetometric techniques, such as AC magnetometry and pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance, are usually employed, showing high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, and flexibility. They are based on creating a nonequilibrium state either by changing the magnetic field or by applying resonant microwave radiation. Another possible source of perturbation is a laser pulse that rapidly heats the sample. This approach has proven to be one of the most useful techniques for studying the kinetics and mechanism of chemical and biochemical reactions. Inspired by these works, we propose an inductive detection of temperature-induced magnetization dynamics as applied to the study of molecular spin systems and describe the general design and construction of a particular induction probehead, taking into account the constraints imposed by the cryostat and electromagnet. To evaluate the performance, several coordination compounds of VO2+, Co2+, and Dy3+ were investigated using low-energy pulses of a terahertz free electron laser of the Novosibirsk free electron laser facility as a heat source. All measured magnetization dynamics were qualitatively or quantitatively described using a proposed basic theoretical model and compared with the data obtained by alternating current magnetometry. Based on the results of the research, the possible scope of applications of inductive detection and its advantages and disadvantages in comparison with standard methods are discussed. Copper(ii)–nitroxide based molecular magnets Cu(hfac)2LR exhibit thermally-induced transitions between high- and low-temperature (HT/LT) magnetostructural states. In this work we report the first study on the spatial distribution of HT/LT phases during gradual transitions in these compounds. We explore the possibility of domain formation at intermediate temperatures, which has never been addressed before. For this purpose, we reexamine the available electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and X-ray diffraction data, and perform numerical calculations of EPR spectra for different models of exchange-coupled networks. A thorough analysis shows that during gradual transitions, molecular magnets Cu(hfac)2LR represent solid solutions of disordered HT and LT phases, and the formation of single-phase domains larger than a few nanometers in size is unlikely. Copper-nitroxide-based molecular magnets of the Cu(hfac) 2 L R family (often called “breathing crystals”) are interesting and appealing systems exhibiting various magnetic anomalies triggered by temperature or light, which can generally be viewed as spin-crossover-like phenomena. The presence of paramagnetic copper(II) ions and stable nitroxide radicals in the polymer chains of breathing crystals makes electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) widely applicable to these systems. In addition to the determination of typical parameters ( g -tensor, hyperfine splitting constants, etc.), EPR allows the monitoring of magnetostructural switching between different states and evaluation of exchange interactions in the exchange-coupled clusters of copper(II) with nitroxides and those between the exchange-coupled clusters. This review highlights the capabilities of EPR in investigating breathing crystals and demonstrates the obtaining of crucial information on magnetic interactions inaccessible by other techniques. "Breathing crystals" based on copper(II) hexafluoroacetylacetonates and pyrazolyl-substituted nitronyl nitroxides comprise the exchange-coupled clusters within the polymeric chains. Owing to an interplay of exchange interaction between copper(II) and nitroxide spins and Jahn-Teller nature of copper(II) complex, the breathing crystals demonstrate thermally and light-induced magnetostructural transitions in many aspects similar to the classical spin crossover. Herewith, we report the first application of variable temperature (VT) far/mid Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and mid FTIR microscopy to breathing crystals. This VT-FTIR study was aimed toward clarification of the transitions mechanism previously debated on the basis of superconducting quantum interference device, X-ray diffraction, and electron paramagnetic resonance data. VT-FTIR showed the onset of new vibrational bands during phase transitions occurring at the expense of several existing ones, whose intensity was significantly reduced. The most pronounced spectral changes were assigned to corresponding vibrational modes using quantum chemical calculations. A clear-cut correlation was found between temperature-dependent effective magnetic moment of studied compounds and the observed VT-FTIR spectra. Importantly, VT-FTIR confirmed coexistence of two types of copper(II)-nitroxide clusters during gradual magnetostructural transition. Such clusters correspond to weakly coupled and strongly coupled spin states, whose relative contribution depends on temperature. The pronounced difference in the VT-FTIR spectra of two states in breathing crystals is a fingerprint of magnetostructural transition, and understanding of these characteristics achieved by us will be useful for future studies of breathing crystals as well as their diamagnetic analogues. Similar to potassium bromide (KBr), which is used in mid-IR as a matrix for pellet preparation, polyethylene (PE) is widely applied in far-IR because it is an inert material without intensive absorption lines in this range. However, despite the material itself being transparent, the transmission of pellet made of PE powder strongly depends on the wavelength tending to decrease almost to zero in a short-wave part of the far-IR range. Heating of the pellet to PE melting temperature significantly improves its transparency, but this approach can only be applied to thermally stable compounds. In this work 8 types of PE powders of different mean particle size (MPS) ranging from 43 to 3µm have been synthesized. Far-IR spectra of PE pellets made of these powders at room temperature have been measured and the inverse correlation between overall far-IR pellet transparency and MPS of its PE powder has been found. The imaginary part of the effective refractive index of the studied pellets obeys light-scattering scale invariance rule, indicating that the transmission of PE pellets is limited by light scattering by PE grains. It has been shown that PE powders with MPS of ~4µm or less are suitable as a matrix for pellet preparation in far-IR spectroscopy without the necessity of pellet melting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Exchange-coupled spin triads nitroxide-copper(II)-nitroxide are the key building blocks of molecular magnets Cu(hfac)2LR. These compounds exhibit thermally induced structural rearrangements and spin transitions, where the exchange interaction between spins of copper(II) ion and nitroxide radicals changes typically by 1 order of magnitude. We have shown previously that electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy is sensitive to the observed magnetic anomalies and provides information on both inter- and intracluster exchange interactions. The value of intracluster exchange interaction is temperature-dependent (J(T)), that can be accessed by monitoring the effective g-factor of the spin triad as a function of temperature (geff(T) ). This paper describes approaches for studying the geff(T) and J(T) dependences and establishes correlations between them. The experimentally obtained geff(T) dependences are interpreted using three different models for the mechanism of structural rearrangements on the molecular level leading to different meanings of the J(T) function. Polymer-chain complexes Cu(hfac)2LR represent an interesting type of molecular magnets exhibiting thermally induced and light-induced magnetic switching, in many respects similar to a spin crossover. In the majority of these compounds the polymer chain consists of alternating oneand threespin units composed of copper(ll) ions and nitronyl nitroxides. The principal one-dimensional structure of the complexes has previously been assumed to play a key role in the observed magnetic anomalies. Using Q-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, we have reliably demonstrated that these complexes are indeed one-dimensional in the sense of the topology of their exchange channels; however, the magnetic chains spread across the structural polymer chains and consist solely of spin triads of nitroxide-copper(ll)-nitroxide. Using four selected examples of complexes Cu(hfac)2LR, we have found the exchange coupling values between spin triads of neighboring polymer chains to range from <1 to ca. 10 cm-1. This conclusion could only be reached due to the selective probing of oneand three-spin units by EPR and correlates perfectly with both previous magnetic susceptibility data and quantum chemical calculations performed in this work. Abstract: Chain complex of copper(II) hexafluoroacetylacetonate with pyrazole-substituted nitronyl nitroxide containing exchange-coupled copper(II)–nitroxide clusters has been studied using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The structural rearrangements at low temperatures induce spin transitions in one half of the copper(II)–nitroxide clusters and effectively lead to reversible diamagnetic dilution. This results in significant changes of EPR spectra and allows us to obtain the value of dipole–dipole interaction in exchange-coupled spin pair as well as the value of exchange interaction between neighboring pairs. The application of terahertz (THz) science in industrial technology and scientific research requires efficient THz detectors. Such detectors should be able to operate under various external conditions and conform to existing geometric constraints in the required application. Pyroelectric THz detectors are among the best candidates. This is due to their versatility, outstanding performance, ease of fabrication, and robustness. In this paper, we propose a compact pyroelectric detector based on a bioriented poled polyvinylidene difluoride film coated with sputtered metal electrodes for in situ absorption measurement at cryogenic temperature. The detector design was optimized for the registration system of the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) endstation of the Novosibirsk Free Electron Laser facility. Measurements of the detector response to pulsed THz radiation at different temperatures and electrode materials showed that the response varies with both the temperature and the type of electrode material used. The maximum signal level corresponds to the temperature range of 10–40 K, in which the pyroelectric coefficient of the PVDF film also has a maximum value. Among the three coatings studied, namely indium tin oxide (ITO), Au, and Cu/Ni, the latter has the highest increase in sensitivity at low temperature. The possibility of using the detectors for in situ absorption measurement was exemplified using two typical molecular spin systems, which exhibited a transparency of 20–30% at 76.9 cm−1 and 5 K. Such measurements, carried out directly in the cryostat with the main recording system and sample fully configured, allow precise control of the THz radiation parameters at the EPR endstation. The crystallization of paramagnetic species in a magnetic field gradient under microgravity-like conditions is an area of interest for both fundamental and applied science. In this paper, a setup for the crystallization of paramagnetic species in the magnetic field up to 7 T generated by a superconducting magnet is described. The research includes calculations of the conditions necessary to compensate for the gravitational force for several types of paramagnetic substances using the magnetic field of superconducting magnets (4.7 T, 7 T, 9.4 T, and 16.4 T). Additionally, for the first time, the crystallization of copper sulfate and cobalt sulfate, as well as a mixture of copper sulfate and cobalt sulfate under gravitational force compensation in a superconducting magnet, was performed. This paper experimentally demonstrates the feasibility of growing paramagnetic crystals within the volume of a test tube on the example of copper and cobalt sulfate crystals. A comparison of crystals grown from the solution of a mixture of copper and cobalt sulfates under the same conditions, with and without the presence of a magnetic field, showed changes in both the number and size of crystals. The development of efficient and reliable sensors operating at room temperature is essential to advance the application of terahertz (THz) science and technology. Pyroelectric THz detectors are among the best candidates, taking into account their variety, outstanding performance, ease of fabrication, and robustness. In this work, we compare the performance of six different detectors, based on either LaTiO3 crystal or different polymeric films, using monochromatic radiation of the Novosibirsk Free Electron Laser facility (NovoFEL) in the frequency range of 0.9–2.0 THz. The main characteristics, including noise equivalent power and frequency response, were determined for all of them. Possible reasons for the differences in the obtained characteristics are discussed on the basis of the main physicochemical characteristics and optical properties of the sensitive area. At least three detectors showed sufficient sensitivity to monitor the shape and duration of the THz macropulses utilizing only a small fraction of the THz radiation from the primary beam. This capability is crucial for accurate characterization of THz radiation during the main experiment at various specialized endstations at synchrotrons and free electron lasers. As an example of such characterization, the typical stability of the average NovoFEL radiation power at the beamline of the electron paramagnetic resonance endstation was investigated. Copper(II)–nitroxide based Cu(hfac)2LR compounds exhibit unusual magnetic behavior that can be induced by various stimuli. In many aspects, the magnetic phenomena observed in Cu(hfac)2LR are similar to classical spin-crossover behavior. However, these phenomena originate from polynuclear exchange-coupled spin clusters Cu2+–O˙–N< or >N–˙O–Cu2+–O˙–N<. Such peculiarities may result in additional multifunctionality of Cu(hfac)2LR compounds, making them promising materials for spintronic applications. Herein, we investigate the Cu(hfac)2LMeMe material, which demonstrates a three-step temperature-induced magnetostructural transition between high-temperature, low-temperature, and intermediate states, as revealed by magnetometry. Two main steps were resolved using variable-temperature Fourier-transform infrared and Q-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. The intermediate-temperature states (∼40–90 K) are characterized by the coexistence of two types of copper(II)–nitroxide clusters, corresponding to the low-temperature and high-temperature phases. High-field EPR experiments revealed the effect of partial alignment of Cu(hfac)2LMeMe microcrystals in a strong (>20 T) magnetic field. This effect was used to unveil the structural features of the low-temperature phase of Cu(hfac)2LMeMe, which were inaccessible using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. A new 1D-coordination polymer [Co(Piv)2(NH2(CH2)6NH2)]n (1, Piv is Me3CCO2− anion) was obtained, the mononuclear fragments {Co(O2CR)2} within which are linked by μ-bridged molecules of hexamethylenediamine (NH2(CH2)6NH2). For this compound, two different monoclinic C2/c (α-1) and P2/n (β-1) phases were found at room temperature by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, with a similar structure of chains and their packages in unit cells. The low-temperature phase (γ-1) of crystal 1 at 150 K corresponds to the triclinic space group P-1. As the temperature decreases, the structural phase transition (SPT) in the α-1 and β-1 crystals is accompanied by an increase in the crystal packing density caused by the rearrangements of both H-bonds and the nearest ligand environment of the cobalt atom ("octahedral CoN2O4 around the metal center at room temperature" → "pseudo-tetrahedral CoN2O2 at 150 K"). The SPT was confirmed by DSC in the temperature range 210–150 K; when heated above 220 K, anomalies in the behavior of the heat flow are observed, which may be associated with the reversibility of SPT; endo effects are observed up to 300 K. The SPT starts below 200 K. At 100 K, a mixture of phases was found in sample 1: 27% α-1 phase, 61% γ-1 phase. In addition, at 100 K, 12% of the new δ-1 phase was detected, which was identified from the diffraction pattern at 260 K upon subsequent heating: the a,b,c-parameters and unit cell volume are close to the structure parameters of γ-1, and the values of the α,β,γ-angles are significantly different. Further heating leads to a phase transition from δ-1 to α-1, which both coexist at room temperature. According to the DC magnetometry data, during cooling and heating, the χMT(T) curves for 1 form a hysteresis loop with ~110 K, in which the difference in the χMT values reaches 9%. Ab initio calculations of the electronic structure of cobalt(II) in α-1 and γ-1 have been performed. Based on the EPR data at 10 K and the ab initio calculations, the behavior of the χMT(T) curve for 1 was simulated in the temperature range of 2–150 K. Breathing crystals based on polymer-chain complexes of Cu(hfac)2 (hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) with nitronyl nitroxides represent a new type of molecular magnetic sensors, exhibiting thermally and light-induced structural rearrangements in the spin clusters Cu ← (O∸N<)n accompanied by magnetic anomalies. To shed light on the driving forces of the rearrangements a method for the synthesis of sterically hindered 4-oxo-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrrole-N-oxides (nitronyl ketones) structurally mimicking nitronyl nitroxides in breathing crystals has been determined. This method employs palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling of 3,3,4-trimethyl-4-nitropentanoic acid chloride with 4-stannylpyrazoles, leading to the formation of nitroketones followed by soft reduction into hydroxylamines, that then undergo self-initiated cyclization into the corresponding nitrones. The radical oxidation of the latter finally yields the target nitronyl ketones. An X-ray diffraction analysis of the nitronyl ketones confirms that their structural characteristics are close to those of the corresponding nitronyl nitroxides. Moreover, upon reaction with Cu(hfac)2, diamagnetic nitronyl ketones form polymer-chain complexes with a 'head-to-tail' motif and a structure similar to their analogues containing paramagnetic nitronyl nitroxides. Finally, it has been found that one of the complexes with nitronyl ketones does manifest a purely structural phase transition similar to its copper-nitroxide analogue, but at the same time it does not manifest any signs of a magneto-structural transition characteristic for breathing crystals where a Jahn-Teller axis in the coordination units CuNO4(O∸N<) is flipped. This observation strongly confirms the crucial role of the exchange interactions between spins of copper and nitroxide for the origin of magneto-structural anomalies in breathing crystals. Free heme is a highly toxic molecule for a living organism and its detoxification is a very important process, especially for carnivorous animals. Here we report the discovery of a previously unknown process for neutralizing free heme in the digestive tract of domestic cats. The cornerstone of this process is the encapsulation of heme into carbonated hydroxyapatite nanoparticles, followed by their excretion with faeces. This way of heme neutralization resembles the formation of insoluble heme-containing particles in the digestive tracts of other hematophagous species (for example, the formation of insoluble hemozoin crystals in malaria-causing Plasmodium parasites). Our findings suggest that the encapsulation of heme molecules into a hydroxyapatite matrix occurs during the transition from the acidic gastric juice to the small intestine with neutral conditions. The formation of these particles and their efficiency to include heme depends on the bone content in a cat's diet. High purity bismuth germanate (Bi 4 (GeO 4 ) 3 , BGO) is proposed and implemented as an alternative material for dielectric EPR resonators. A significant improvement of the absolute sensitivity can be readily achieved by substituting the alumina insert (ring) by BGO-made one in commercially available X-band EPR probeheads. Four BGO dielectric inserts of 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm inner diameter (ID) were made for comparison with standard 5 mm inner diameter alumina insert. All inserts were introduced into commercial Bruker EPR resonator ER 4118X-MD-5W1, and their performance was investigated. The Q-values of empty resonators, B 1 saturation curves and continuous wave EPR spectra of DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) were measured and analyzed in a temperature range 6–300 K. BGO-made resonators were found superior in several important aspects. The background signals arising from BGO are much weaker compared to those of alumina at B = 0–0.6 T and T = 6–300 K; this is especially useful for measuring weak signals in the half-field region, as well as those near the central field. Moreover, mechanical properties of BGO allow easy fabrication of dielectric bodies having various shapes and sizes; in particular, small BGO resonators (e.g. ID = 2 or 3 mm) strongly enhance sensitivity for small samples due to increase of the filling factor. All these advantages have been also inspected in the pulse mode, proving that higher B 1 fields and better filling factors can be achieved, contributing to the overall enhancement of the performance. Molecular magnets Cu(hfac)2LR represent a new type of photoswitchable materials based on exchange-coupled clusters of copper(II) with stable nitroxide radicals. It was found recently that the photoinduced spin state of these compounds is metastable on the time scale of hours at cryogenic temperatures, similar to the light-induced excited spin state trapping phenomenon well-known for many spin-crossover compounds. Our previous studies have shown that electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) in continuous wave (CW) mode allows for studying the light-induced spin state conversion and relaxation in the Cu(hfac)2LR family. However, light-induced spin dynamics in these compounds has not been studied on the sub-second time scale so far. In this work we report the first time-resolved (TR) EPR study of light-induced spin state switching and relaxation in Cu(hfac)2LR with nanosecond temporal resolution. To enhance spectral resolution we used high-frequency TR EPR at W-band (94 GHz). We first discuss the peculiarities of applying TR EPR to the solid-phase compounds Cu(hfac)2LR at low (liquid helium) temperatures and approaches developed for photoswitching/relaxation studies. Then we analyze the kinetics of the excited spin state at T = 5-21 K. It has been found that the photoinduced spin state is formed at time delays shorter than 100 ns. It has also been found that the observed relaxation of the excited state is exponential on the nanosecond time scale, with the decay rate depending linearly on temperature. Breathing crystals based on polymer-chain complexes of Cu(hfac)2 with nitroxides exhibit thermally and light-induced magnetostructural anomalies in many aspects similar to a spin crossover. In the present work, we report the synthesis and investigation of a new family of Cu(hfac)2 complexes with tert-butylpyrazolylnitroxides and their nonradical structural analogues. The complexes with paramagnetic ligands clearly exhibit structural rearrangements in the copper(II) coordination units and accompanying magnetic phenomena characteristic for breathing crystals. Contrary to that, their structural analogues with diamagnetic ligands do not undergo rearrangements in the copper(II) coordination environments. This confirms experimentally the crucial role of paramagnetic ligands and exchange interactions between them and copper(II) ions for the origin of magnetostructural anomalies in this family of molecular magnets. Abstract: Solid heterospin compounds based on Cu(hfac)2 complexes with a new group of nitronyl nitroxides bearing different azine-N-oxide substituents at position 2 of the 2-imidazoline ring (L n ) were studied. The major factor responsible for the change in the magnetic characteristics of the [Cu(hfac)2L1] complex with triazine nitronyl nitroxide with temperature was shown to be the specific pairwise packing of heterospin molecules with the dominant antiferromagnetic exchange between the radical fragments of adjacent molecules. For complexes of Cu(hfac)2 with 1-oxoazin-2-yl-substituted nitronyl nitroxides L2 and L4, 7-membered metallocycles were obtained, although they form rarely. It was shown that polymer chains formed in the solid complex with spin-labeled pyrazine-N-oxide [(Cu(hfac)2)3(L3)2] due to the cross-linking of {(Cu(hfac)2)2(L3)2} binuclear fragments via the bridging [Cu(hfac)2]. • Multimodal metal-coated hollow terahertz waveguides were proposed. • Transmission and polarization properties were measured at 1.4, 2.3, 5.5, 33.5 THz. • Transmission losses are 4.6, 6.2, 11.7 dB/m at 1.4, 5.5, 33.5 THz, respectively. • Numerical simulations in COMSOL confirmed the obtained waveguides characteristics. • Experimental findings were described in the framework of the geometrical optics. Terahertz (THz) range, which lies between the microwave and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, presents a new frontier containing an abundance of technical applications and fundamental research problems. There are several challenges limiting the progress in the THz science and technology. One of them is the limited range of the guided-wave propagation of THz radiation, owing to the high loss from the finite conductivity of metals and the high absorption coefficient of dielectric materials in the THz range. In this work, we discuss the design and fabrication of multimodal hollow THz waveguides used at the X-band Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) endstation located at the Novosibirsk Free Electron Laser facility (NovoFEL). Experiments carried out at the EPR endstation are aimed to investigate the impact of THz and far infrared radiation on the spin system of different inorganic complexes and organic radicals. The EPR probehead and cryostat impose strict constraints on the possible ways of transferring the THz radiation to the sample, requiring the development, manufacturing, and characterization of specific waveguides. The proposed waveguides for X-band EPR measurements under THz radiation resemble hollow metal/dielectric waveguides. They have the shape of a hollow cylinder, tapering towards the end, with a silver-coated inner surface, and allow THz radiation to be transmitted over a distance of about 60 cm in a wide frequency range from THz to middle infrared. The waveguides performance was characterized at different frequencies of NovoFEL radiation and compared with numerical simulations. Following the requirements of polarization-sensitive EPR experiments, the waveguides were further modified by a miniature attachment, consisting of a polarizer, a semiconductor mirror, and a quarter-wave plate. The attachment allows preserving the initial polarization properties of THz radiation, turns its propagation vector, and creates the circular-polarized light irradiating the sample – all inside the limited volume of the EPR probehead. Vanadium(IV) complexes are actively studied as potential candidates for molecular spin qubits operating at room temperatures. They have longer electron spin decoherence times than many other transition ions, being the key property for applications in quantum information processing. In most cases reported to date, the molecular complexes were optimized through the design for this purpose. In this work, we investigate the relaxation properties of vanadium(IV) ions incorporated in complexes with lanthanides using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). In all cases, the VO6 moieties with no nuclear spins in the first coordination sphere are addressed. We develop and implement the approaches for facile diagnostics of relaxation characteristics in individual VO6 moieties of such compounds. Remarkably, the estimated relaxation times are found to be close to those of other vanadium-based qubits obtained previously. In the future, a synergistic combination of qubit-friendly properties of vanadium ions with single-molecule magnetism and luminescence of lanthanides can be pursued to realize new functionalities of such materials. The d-group Kramers ions, having strong zero field splitting (ZFS) with axial symmetry and a negative D value for the ZFS Hamiltonian, are widely considered as candidates for use as single molecular magnets (SMMs). An important need is the means to switch the SMM between its states in a reasonably short and predictable period of time, which is generally not available. We propose an approach, Zeeman–far infrared (ZeFIR) double resonance, in which circularly polarized alternating magnetic fields in the far infrared (FIR) range induce selective magnetic dipole transitions between different Kramers doublets of the SMM and polarized microwave (mw) pulses transfer excitation inside the upper Kramers doublet. A combination of FIR and mw pulses allows unidirectional switching between +S and −S states of the ion. The proposed approach is considered for a model quartet system with total spin S = 3/2, which seems to be the most promising object for selective resonance manipulations of its states by circularly polarized radiation. The Novosibirsk Free Electron Laser (NovoFEL) facility is able to produce high-power tunable terahertz (THz) laser radiation in quasi-continuous mode. The ability to control/shape this THz radiation is required in a number of user experiments. In this work we propose a modulation approach suitable for free electron lasers based on recuperation design. It allows for generating THz macropulses of a desirable length, down to several microseconds (limited by a quality factor of FEL optical resonator). Using this approach, macropulses in the time window from several microseconds to several hundred microseconds have been shown for three possible frequency ranges: mid-infrared (~1100 cm−1), far-infrared (~200 cm−1) and THz (~40 cm−1). In each case, the observed rise and decay of the macropulse have been measured and interpreted. The advantage of using short macropulses at the maximum peak power available has been demonstrated with the time-resolved Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
