The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the FAO-AquaCrop model in winter wheat in the southern Loess Plateau of China. Multi-year field experimental data from 2004 and 2011 were used to calibrate and validate the model for simulating biomass, canopy cover (CC), soil water content, and grain yield under rainfed conditions. The model performance was evaluated using root mean square error (RMSE) and Willmott index of agreement (d) as criteria. The RMSE ranged from 0.16 to 0.38 t/ha for simulating aboveground biomass, 1.87 to 4.15% for CC, 0.50 to 1.44 t/ha for grain yield, and 5.70 to 22.56 mm for soil water content. The d ranged from 0.22 to 0.89, 0.25 to 0.43, 0.36 to 0.62 and 0.95 to 0.98 for aboveground biomass, CC, soil water content and grain yield, respectively. Generally, the model performed better for simulating CC and yield than biomass and soil water content. The results further indicated that AquaCrop is capable of simulating winter wheat yield under rainfed conditions. Further improvement may be needed to capture the variation of different management practices such as fertility and irrigation levels in this region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent years have witnessed a rapid increase in communication and economic cooperation between mainland China and Taiwan. Consequently, demand for legal services regarding the other side of the Strait is on the rise, especially the needs of Taiwan for legal services on the mainland side. With the permission of Taiwan residents to sit for the PRC National Judicial Exam and of Taiwan law firms to set up representative offices in mainland China, more and more lawyers from Taiwan have been seeking opportunities in the mainland legal services market. This article gives an introduction of the current situation regarding the legal services market of both sides and proposes that institutional support, cross-strait lawyering cooperation and quality improvement of legal services are desirable in promoting the development of legal services markets across the Strait. This paper proposes to use depth perception to represent raters' decision in holistic evaluation of ESL essays, as an alternative medium to conventional form of numerical scores. The researchers verified the new method's accuracy and inter/intra-rater reliability by inviting 24 ESL teachers to perform different representations when rating 60 essays written by Chinese ESL learners. During numerical representation, the raters expressed their evaluation in the form of numbers, while with the DP-based method, the raters expressed their evaluation by marking distances with nail tags on a wood ruler with hidden scale marks. Then the researchers translated the distance results into numbers and compared the accuracy and inter/intrarater consistency of the two approaches by referring to these essays' criteria scores from eight expert raters. The results showed that DP-based method could improve raters' performance, producing more similar results to experts' scores, with higher consistency both among different raters and within the same individual rater.
