Alkaline lakes (pH > 9) are among the few modern sedimentary environments that are hydrochemically favourable for low‐temperature dolomite formation. While Mg‐clays and Mg‐evaporites also form more easily in alkaline environments, few studies have focused on how the kinetically inhibited dolomite wins the competition for Mg2+. Here, a basin‐wide survey of the distribution, paragenesis and stable C, O and Mg isotopes of main Mg‐rich minerals in the Late Palaeozoic saline alkaline lake deposit of the north‐west Junggar Basin, north‐west China, is conducted to study the influence of the formation and diagenesis of eitelite, northupite and Mg‐clays on dolomite formation. Large, isolated dolomite crystals (20 to 70 μm in diameter), show positive δ13C values (ranging from +1 to +7‰) and a restricted distribution in the mudstones of the lake‐transitional zone. These crystals have been interpreted as organogenic dolomite driven by methanogenesis via fermentation of organic substrates. The δ18O values of dolomitic mudstones (from −7.4 to +3.4‰), calcitic mudstones (from −15.1 to −3.3‰) and bedded Na‐carbonate evaporites (from +0.08 to +3.7‰), together with their Mg isotopic compositions, suggest that dolomite was not enriched in the most concentrated environments or during stages with most Mg sources, but in the organic‐rich deposits containing few other authigenic Mg‐rich minerals. Dolomite is at a competitive disadvantage for Mg2+ ions compared to Mg‐evaporite and Mg‐clay minerals due to its slow crystallization rates and the deficiency of micritic calcium carbonate precursors. However, it can nucleate and progressively grow into large crystals (>20 μm) if bacterial methanogenesis could effectively lower porewater pH (<8.5) and induce the dissolution of generated eitelite, northupite or Mg‐clays. These findings suggest that high salinity and/or high alkalinity are not always favourable conditions for dolomite formation and highlight the active role of pH fluctuations in inducing low‐temperature dolomite formation. Palustrine‐lacustrine carbonates of the well‐dated Xichagou section (ca. 43 to ca. 13 Ma) next to the active Altyn Tagh Fault (ATF) are investigated in terms of abundance, lithofacies, strontium, carbon and oxygen isotopes, to differentiate tectonic and climatic controls on the evolution of intermontane lakes in the Tibetan Plateau. Volumetrically dominant siliciclastic strata document five depositional stages: mid‐Eocene alluvial fan (onshore), late Eocene fan delta (nearshore), Oligocene semi‐deep lake (offshore), early Miocene braided fluvial delta (nearshore) and mid‐Miocene fluvial plain (onshore). Carbonates are most abundant in the middle three lacustrine stages and contain various lithofacies, including calcretes, microbialites, grainstones and marlstones. Oxygen isotopes show two positive excursions (−1.17‰ and −2.59‰) at the first nearshore and late offshore stages, indicating two relatively saline stages linked to the Eocene and late Oligocene global warming climates. Carbon isotopes show a positive excursion (from −4.0‰ to +2.9‰) at the middle semi‐deep lake stage and meanwhile strontium isotopes of carbonates show a large negative excursion (from 0.7120‰ to 0.7113‰), both in response to the early Oligocene global humid and cooling climate and resultant lake expansion at the Qaidam Basin. Except for this lake expansion event, the first‐order lake transgressing, shallowing and regressing evolution at the Xichagou section were not consistent with Cenozoic global climatic change trends. Instead, the two‐stage strike‐slip faulting of the ATF probably induced the northeastward and eastward migration of basin depocenter and resulted in the lake transgression‐regression at the Xichagou section. The widespread presence and relatively minor variation in oxygen isotopes (from −7.5‰ to −7.0‰) of early Miocene microbialites in the northern Tibetan Plateau suggest a warm climate and a low relief before ca. 15 Ma. Travertines formed of crystalline crust have been widely reported, but there has not been focus on their geochemical characteristics. We therefore carefully conducted a series of geochemical investigations and U-Th dating on a travertine mound mainly composed of crystalline crust from Sobcha (southwest China) to determine their geochemical features and geological implications. The Sobcha travertines dominantly consist of granular crystals and fan crystals and show δ13C from 3.4‰ to 4.9‰ V-PDB, δ18O from −26.7‰ to −23.7‰ V-PDB, and 87Sr/86Sr from 0.712458 to 0.712951. When normalized to PASS, the Sobcha travertines exhibit MREE enrichment relative to HREE and LREE, HREE enrichment relative to LREE, and positive Eu anomalies. The δ13C signatures and mother CO2 evaluation of the Sobcha travertines show that the Sobcha travertines were thermogene travertines largely receiving mother CO2 from (upper) mantle (i.e., magmatic CO2) or a mixture of soil-derived CO2 and CO2 related to carbonate decarbonation. The 87Sr/86Sr of the Sobcha travertines is out of the 87Sr/86Sr ranges of local deposits exposed at Sobcha and surrounding areas but is well matched with the mean 87Sr/86Sr of Nadi Kangri volcanic rocks which cropped out to the northeast of the studied travertines (over 20 km away). This might indicate the important role of the Nadi Kangri volcanic rocks in suppling Sr to the studied travertines, but more studies are required. The LREE depletion compared to MREE and HREE in the Sobcha travertines was interpreted to be caused by the difference in geochemical mobility between LREEs and HREEs during water–rock interaction at depth, while the MREE enrichment compared to HREE was considered to be most likely inherited from reservoir/aquifer rocks. The positive Eu anomalies of the Sobcha travertines may result from very high reservoir temperatures and/or preferential dissolution of Eu-rich minerals/rocks (especially plagioclase). The Sobcha travertine mounds displays no or very slight vertical variations in δ13C, 87Sr/86Sr, and REE patterns, indicating the compositional stability of mother CO2 and paleo-fluids. However, a significant vertical increase in δ18O was observed and was explained as the result of gradual water temperature decrease related to climate cooling, self-closure of the vents, or mound vertical growth. Banded travertines are important parts of fissure ridge systems, but studies on geochemical characterization of banded travertines are limited. This study investigated the lithofacies and stable carbon and oxygen isotopic features of banded travertines from Xiagei (southwestern China) to examine their formation mechanisms. Petrographic analyses of the banded travertines revealed two lithotypes: thick-laminated palisade crystalline crust and thin-laminated composite crystalline crust. δ13C and δ18O of the Xiagei banded travertines range from 2.82‰ to 4.50‰ V-PDB, and from −25.86‰ to −20.90‰ V-PDB. Parent CO2 evaluation shows that the Xiagei banded travertines mainly received CO2 from the decarbonation of marine carbonates, but the contributions of magmatic CO2 and the dissolution of marine carbonates are also unneglectable. Significantly, the magmatic-derived CO2 might indicate that the delamination of the lithosphere along with the asthenosphere upwelling could be taking place in the eastern Tibetan plateau. Paleotemperature calculation shows that the Xiagei travertines were precipitated from moderate- to high-temperature hot springs (44.3 to 86.8 °C). Interestingly, the thick-laminated palisade crystalline crust and thin-laminated composite crystalline crust display calculated paleotemperature between 66.6 and 86.8 °C and between 56.6 and 77.7 °C, respectively, reflecting the great role of water temperature in controlling the lithofacies of banded travertines. A comparison between the banded travertines at Xiagei and other areas also shows temperature is a non-negligible factor controlling banded travertine precipitation. However, this does not mean that water temperature is the decisive controlling factor and more studies on banded travertines are still indispensable to disclose the potential factors controlling the factors/processes affecting banded travertine lithofacies. The Middle-Upper Cambrian Xixiangchi Formation in the Sichuan Basin is regarded as an important reservoir with great potential for hydrocarbon exploration. It is previously indicated that the Xixiangchi carbonates have experienced extensive dolomitization, however, the origin of dolomitizing fluids and the dolomitization mechanism still remain uncertain. In this study, a set of petrographic and geochemical examinations, including rare earth elements (REE) and isotopic (C, O, and Sr) compositions were used to trace the origins of dolomitizing fluids and associated diagenetic processes. The petrographic examination revealed three types of matrix dolomites (D1, D2, D3) and one cement saddle dolomite (SD). These phases have crystal size ranges of less than 30 μm (very fine to fine crystals, D1), 30–100 μm (fine to medium crystals, D2), 100–300 μm (medium to coarsely crystalline dolomite, D3), and 0.3–4 mm (fracture filling cements, SD), respectively. D1 is characterized by non to very weak luminescence, weakly negative Ce anomalies (Ce/Ce* = 0.84 ± 0.02), strongly negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.65 ± 0.03), and high 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.71062 ± 0.00122). In combination with δ13C (−1.5‰ ± 0.2‰) and δ18O (−9.7‰ ± 0.5‰) compositions, D1 is interpreted to be formed by penecontemporaneous dolomitization in the near-surface environment with seawater as the dolomitizing fluid. In contrast, D2 is characterized by intercrystalline pores, dirty crystal surfaces, similar δ13C (−1.4‰ ± 0.4‰) compositions but higher δ18O (−8.9‰ ± 0.7‰) compositions, and lower 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.70992 ± 0.00035), similar Ce anomalies (Ce/Ce* = 0.87 ± 0.04) and higher Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.85 ± 0.04). The coarser D2 is regarded to be formed by the post-penecontemporaneous seepage-reflux dolomitization or by recrystallization of D1 dolomite in a near-surface or shallow burial environment. D3 is distinguished by a cloudy core with clear rims, showing slightly higher Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.88 ± 0.02) and similar Ce anomalies (Ce/Ce* = 0.88 ± 0.02) than those of D1 and D2. Combined with the δ18O compositions (−10.4‰ ± 0.4‰) and 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.70989 ± 0.00048), D3 is thought to be formed by the overgrowth or recrystallization of D1 and D2 dolomites in a shallow to moderate burial environment. The fractures filling SD dolomite consists of nonplanar and much coarser crystals with undulatory extinctions and brighter red luminescence. The lower δ18O (−11.1‰ ± 0.3‰) compositions, lower negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.70 ± 0.01) of SD than the matrix dolomites, and similar Ce anomalies (Ce/Ce* = 0.83 ± 0.01) are indicative of hydrothermal dolomitization, with possible fluids associated with the magma during the period of Emei taphrogenic movement. In addition, the 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.70941 ± 0.00003) of SD suggest probable origin from the coeval seawater partially. Therefore, SD dolomite is interpreted to be formed by hydrothermal dolomitization with mixed dolomitizing fluid of seawater and hydrothermal fluids. In summary, all the matrix dolomites have almost the same ΣREE concentrations and exhibit similar near-flat REE partition patterns with weak LREE enrichments, weakly negative Ce anomalies, and negative Eu anomalies. Such characteristics of REE compositions are indicative of similar evolved dolomitizing fluid, such as seawater or seawater- derived fluids. By contrast, SD dolomites have a different REE partition pattern with left-leaning characteristics, LREE depletions, and negative Eu anomalies, thus suggesting a different dolomitizing fluid source from the matrix dolomites. In addition, the development of intercrystalline pores associated with D2 dolomite makes it more likely to be a potential reservoir, indicating that the dolomitizing history of carbonate has a strong influence on the quality of potential dolomite reservoirs. Travertine mounds are common spring‐constructed landforms with highly variable geometries, but factors controlling their development have not yet been fully understood. To investigate processes linked with their lateral and vertical growth, this study investigated travertine mounds at Heinitang (China) and compared them with typical mounds around the world. Calcium concentration variation modelling and height evaluation of travertine mounds were also performed. The lateral extent of travertine mounds was found to be mainly controlled by Ca2+ and HCO3‐ concentrations and water discharge: relatively small metre‐scale mounds, like those from Heinitang, are largely the products of Ca2+‐deficiency (<150 mg L−1, commonly <100 mg L−1) or HCO3‐‐deficiency (<500 mg L−1) springs with low discharges (<0.1 L s−1), whereas springs with higher Ca2+ and HCO3‐ concentrations and discharges give rise to the formation of wider mounds. Additional factors affecting mound lateral development include infiltration, evaporation, micro‐organisms, water cooling, CO2 degassing and flow paths. Height of travertine mounds cannot be simply considered to represent the piezometric surface, because the vertical growth of travertine mounds is also influenced by the water table change triggered by tectonic pulses and climate fluctuations, and the closing of conduits induced by self‐sealing. The extinction of travertine mounds at Heinitang is, for example, probably caused by the water table lowering triggered by earthquakes or climate drying after 4 kyr bp. These findings offer new inputs for the better understanding of factors controlling travertine mound development and might assist in the reconstruction of fluid properties, hydrodynamics, tectonics and climate fluctuations in fossil geothermal systems with travertine mounds. Phanerozoic sinter deposits have been reported globally, with their identification mainly based on sedimentological, petrological, and mineralogical studies. In this study, a detailed geochemical investigation, combined with sedimentological characterization, was conducted on the Wugonglilu siliceous deposit, a Cretaceous (106 Ma) sinter in NE China, to examine its genesis. The deposit is inferred as a siliceous hot spring deposit (sinter) owing to its geological setting in an epithermal gold-mining district, its morphologically variable microbial textures typical of subaerial sinters, and nearly pure silica composition. Three lithofacies were recognized in this study, including laminated to thinly bedded sinter, silica-cemented breccia, and epithermal vein, which represent deposits from three contrasting hydrothermal environments. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the sinter are similar to the bedrock through which the geothermal fluids passed, namely the Upper Triassic Dajiahe Formation (T 3 dj), a marine siliceous rock unit, and the Lower Cretaceous Datashanlinchang Formation (K 1 d), a rhyolite unit. Results indicate that both underlying units are possible Sr sources of the silica in the Wugonglilu sinter. The REE + Y (rare-earth elements and yttrium) patterns of the sinter exhibit significant variability, primarily due to terrestrial detrital contamination. Differential REE + Y contamination by terrestrial detritus was striking in the white and dark laminae/beds of the laminated to thinly bedded sinter. The white laminae/beds, generally less contaminated, were probably formed during the dry season, whereas the dark laminae/beds exhibiting greater detrital contamination were likely formed during the wet season. When excluding the samples strongly contaminated by detritus, the sinter exhibits Y anomalies comparable to Post-Archean Australian Shale (PAAS), and to the adjacent underlying K 1 d rhyolite and T 3 dj siliceous rock samples, indicating that these anomalies were not inherited from rocks dominating the reservoirs. Furthermore, the sinter shows a (Ce/Ce*) N range close to that of the underlying marine siliceous rock and rhyolite samples, reflecting that the (Ce/Ce*) N of the sinter is largely inherited from the reservoir rock(s). The overall REE + Y patterns of the sinter range from nearly flat to LREE-depleted, similar to some samples of the K 1 d rhyolite and T 3 dj siliceous rock units. However, most samples of the K 1 d rhyolite and T 3 dj siliceous rock display (Pr/Tb) N and (Pr/Yb) N higher than many studied sinter samples. This is likely because of the formation of strong HREE–carbonate complexes during groundwater migration. Based on these results, a generalized formation model of the studied sinter system was constructed. This study suggests that integrated sedimentological and geochemical investigations can aid in interpreting the genesis of sinter deposits, in particular the link between sinter deposits and corresponding reservoir rocks. Siliceous-sulphate rock coatings were observed at Zhenzhu Spring, an acid sulphate hot spring in the Tengchong volcanic field, China. These rock coatings are mainly formed of gypsum and amorphous silica. Some alum-(K), voltaite, α-quartz and muscovite were also found. Four different laminae are developed in the rock coatings: gypsum layer, tight siliceous layer, tabular siliceous layer and siliceous debris layer. The gypsum layer is located at the top of the rock coatings, while other siliceous layers appear below the gypsum layer. Geochemical modelling of the fluids was performed to identify the mechanisms responsible for the formation of gypsum and amorphous silica. The results indicated that the occurrence of gypsum is related to the acid-fog deposition and amorphous silica mainly originates from spring water. Fog deposition provided the rock coatings with abundant SO42− and Ca, and the subsequent complete evaporation of the condensed fluids produced gypsum. Seasonal climate change (especially variation in rainfall) determines the fluctuations of capillary action and dissolution. Rainfall events in the wet season led to periods of non-precipitating gypsum and promoted the capillary rise of the spring water. Slightly diluted capillary water (a small amount of rainwater) covered the rock coatings, formed a tight siliceous layer on the rock-coating surface and/or filled the pores among the gypsum crystals forming many tabular siliceous aggregates. Heavy rainfall (high dilution), however, resulted in non-precipitating amorphous silica and accelerated the gypsum dissolution, leaving tabular pores around tabular siliceous aggregates and forming a tabular siliceous layer. Lacustrine dolomite has received considerable attention during the last twenty years due to its scientific and high economic value in conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs. Compilation of lacustrine dolomite in deep time can help to clarify the hydrochemical conditions in which dolomite was formed. In deep time, lacustrine dolomite facies can be divided into two categories: i) lake-marginal facies including dolograinstones and dolomicrobialites, and ii) lake-central facies comprising alternated dolomitic mudrocks/argillaceous dolomites, tuffaceous dolomites/dolomitic tuffites, analcimic/albitic dolomites/dolomitic analcimolites, as well as dolomitic sandstones. Based on lake water salinity and alkalinity, ancient dolomite-rich lakes can be genetically classified into four types: non-alkaline (pH < 9) brackish, non-alkaline saline, alkaline (pH > 9) brackish, and alkaline saline lakes. Dolomites in different lakes show distinctive features in lithofacies, minerology and isotopic compositions (carbon and oxygen). The formation of early dolomite (primary and early diagenetic dolomite) in different lacustrine depositional systems coincidentally resulted from a significant increase of Mg2+ concentrations and alkalinity in bulk lake water and/or porewater. The Mg2+ increment might be due to climate-controlled intense evaporation and/or by excessive input of Mg2+ from hydrothermal fluids and/or basic volcanic tuffs into brackish lakes which increases alkalinity with subsequently precipitation of dolomite. Moderately positive carbon isotopes (δ13C = +2 to +10‰, V-PDB) and negative oxygen isotopes (δ18O = 0 to −20‰, V-PDB) are indicative, not exclusively, of such hydrothermal- or volcanic-related lacustrine dolomite. In alkaline water systems, dolomite can be dominantly primary in origins and the presence of preexisting Ca-carbonate minerals is not very important for dolomite enrichment in deep time. The Zhenzhu Spring, located in the Tengchong volcanic field, Yunnan, China, is an acid hot spring with high SO42− concentrations and intense acid aerosol generation. In order to understand the formation mechanism of sulfate minerals at the Zhenzhu Spring and provide a better insight into the sulfur isotope geochemistry of the associated Rehai hydrothermal system, we investigated the spring water hydrochemistry, mineralogy and major-element geochemistry of sulfate minerals at the Zhenzhu Spring together with the sulfur-oxygen isotope geochemistry of sulfur-containing materials at the Rehai geothermal field and compared the isotope results with those in other steam-heated environments. Subaerial minerals include a wide variety of sulfate minerals (gypsum, alunogen, pickeringite, tamarugite, magnesiovoltaite and a minor Mg–S–O phase) and amorphous SiO2. The δ34S values of the subaerial sulfate minerals at the Zhenzhu Spring varied subtly from –0.33 to 1.88‰ and were almost consistent with the δ34S values of local H2S (–2.6 to 0.6‰) and dissolved SO42− (–0.2 to 5.8‰), while the δ18O values (–8.94 to 20.1‰) were between that of the spring waters (–10.19 to –6.7‰) and atmospheric O2 (~23.88‰). The results suggest that most of the sulfate minerals are derived from the oxidation of H2S, similar to many sulfate minerals from modern steam-heated environments. However, the rapid environmental change (different ratio of atmospheric and water oxygen) at the Zhenzhu Spring accounts for the large variation of δ18O. The formation of subaerial sulfate minerals around the Zhenzhu Spring is related to acid aerosols (vapour and acid water droplets). The intense activity of spring water around vents supply the aerosol with H2SO4 (H2S oxidation and acid water droplets formed by bubble bursting) and few cations. Deposition of the acid sulfate aerosol forms the acid condensate, which attacks the underlying rocks and releases many cations and anions to form subaerial sulfate minerals at the Zhenzhu Spring. Abstract Reshuitang is an important active hydrothermal area in the Tengchong geothermal field and is characterized by many hot springs and their associated deposits. Detailed mineralogical, crystal morphological, and stable isotopic investigations of the smooth slope fossil travertines at Reshuitang and hydrochemical studies of two active springs around the fossil travertines were conducted to study their genesis. The results show that 1) the modern springs discharge waters with high temperature (>70 °C), near-neutral pH (6.3–8.34), and high saturation indices of calcite and aragonite; 2) the fossil travertines contain calcite and small amounts of Mn-Fe oxides, halite, thenardite, and non‑carbonate debris; 3) the calcite include ray crystals, dendrite crystals, platy crystals, and spike crystals; and 4) δ13C and δ18O of the fossil travertines at Reshuitang range from −1.59‰ to −0.87‰ and 6.48‰ to 7.80‰, respectively. According to comparison between the travertines at Reshuitang and other travertines in Tengchong, all these travertines are thermogene travertines, with a large contribution of mantle degassing to their parent CO 2 , but are formed at different temperatures. The fossil travertines at Reshuitang, similar to those at Shuzhishi, are formed at high temperatures (near 100 °C), which results in weak microbial activities during the formation of the fossil travertines. Most of the calcite crystals at Reshuitang were non-equilibrium products precipitated directly from the spring waters during the deposition process, while the spike crystals originated from diagenetic dissolution of large calcite crystals. Comparison between the fossil travertines at Reshuitang and other smooth slope travertines from other areas shows these smooth slope travertines have different lithofacies and fabrics. In smooth slope environments, temperature may control the distribution and development of microbes and the intensity of CO 2 degassing, and consequently cause the precipitation of contrasting fabrics and lithofacies. The dolostone units in the Cambrian Changlangpu Formation of the Sichuan Basin have demonstrated substantial potential for natural gas exploration. A systematic understanding of the various dolomite (and non-carbonate) phases that build these rocks and the diagenetic pathways of the Canglangpu Formation carbonates still needs to be developed. This study combines the petrographic properties of dolomite (and non-carbonate) phases with their geochemical evidence (carbon, oxygen and 87Sr/86Sr isotope data). Moreover, fluid inclusion evidence and in situ rare-earth element (REE) data are presented. The samples studied were taken from hand specimens collected in the field and plugs from cores to explore the properties and evolutions of dolomite in the Cambrian Canglangpu Formation in the central-northern Sichuan Basin. Six dolomite phases are identified: silty crystalline dolomite (D1), fabric-retentive dolomite (D2), fabric-destructive dolomite (D3), fine crystalline dolomite (D4), medium to coarse crystalline dolomite cement (C1a and C1b) and saddle dolomite cement (C2). Silty crystalline dolomite represents the earliest dolomitization and shows δ18O values comparable to those of Cambrian seawater. Fabric-retentive dolomite, fabric-destructive dolomite and fine crystalline dolomite represent reflux dolomitization during shallow burial. Specifically, Fine crystalline dolomite with a turbid-core and clean-rim may have recrystallized from secondary dolomitization of marine-derived porewater. Fabric-destructive dolomite shows the depleted δ13C values, resulting from the secondary dolomitization involving organics degradation in medium to deep burial environment. The fluid inclusion data demonstrates that the medium to coarse crystalline dolomite cement (C1a) formed in relatively elevated temperature and salinity brines. Intrusion of sulfur- and metal-rich (Zn and Fe) medium-temperature hydrothermal fluids gave rise to the formation of medium to coarse crystalline dolomite cement (C1b) and sphalerite mineralization. The Leikoupo Formation, which was deposited during the Anisian stage in the central Sichuan Basin, has produced significant amounts of conventional gas but there have been few studies on its unconventional resources. Organic-rich shale in the Leikoupo Formation was discovered for the first time in the wells of CT1 and JY1 in the central Sichuan region, but information on its sedimentary environment and climate evolution is scarce. A series of lithofacies, organic geochemistry and inorganic geochemistry analyses were used to analyse core samples of CT1 and JY1 to estimate their vertical changes. The organic matter characteristics, the sedimentary environment and the factors controlling the Leikoupo Formation shale in the Sichuan basin were revealed. The organic-rich shale of the Lei3-2 sub-member was formed in a semi-restricted lagoon environment. The sedimentary environment was dysoxic-anoxic, with high palaeoproductivity, a warm and humid to semi-arid and semi-humid climate. The vertical sea level decreased for a short period, led to an increase in oxygen content in the mixed shale, clayey shale and calcareous shale that were sequentially deposited from bottom to top. In the vertical direction, the palaeo-productivity and aridity decreased, and there was an increase in the salinity and terrigenous debris input. All of these corresponded well with TOC. According to Mo-TOC and Mo–U patterns, the mixed shale was characterised by the highest values of Mo EF , U EF and Mo EF /U EF , followed by clayey shale and calcareous shale, which indicated mixed shale was deposited in a moderately restricted water condition, which progressively became more restricted during the deposition of clayey shale and calcareous shale with the fall of relative sea level. Biomarker compounds (steranes, terpanes), Tmax and other pyrolysis parameters indicated that the organic matter had reached the stage of high-to over-maturity. Primary depositional and diagenetic processes exert very important influences on shale gas reservoirs. Rock electrical properties are an important basis for making reservoir prediction using the electromagnetic method (EM). However, there is still a lack of understanding about the impact of the sedimentary diagenesis process on shale electrical properties, this study focuses on the impact of diagenesis on rock properties. In this study, rock electrical properties are studied based on electromagnetic experiments. We systematically studied the lithofacies of different depositional paleoenvironments and diagenetic processes, and the influence of diagenetic evolution on the rock electrical properties was discussed, by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), low-temperature nitrogen adsorption (LTNA), and trace element (TE) geochemical analysis. Based on the study of mineral composition, grain assemblages and pore systems, we identified four lithofacies in the Longmaxi Formation: siliceous shale, siliceous-argillaceous mixed shale, silty shale and argillaceous shale. Redox proxies (U/Th, V/Cr, and Ni/Co) indicate that the siliceous shale was deposited in a relatively anoxic and reducing environment, indicating a deep-water shelf depositional paleoenvironment. The siliceous-argillaceous shale, silty shale and argillaceous shale were deposited under a relatively dysoxic-oxic environment, indicating a shallow-water shelf depositional paleoenvironment. The order of resistivity values of the lithofacies within the Longmaxi Formation is 36.78 Ω m (siliceous shale), 66.81 Ω m (siliceous-argillaceous mixed shale), 79.54 Ω m (silty shale), and 107.00 Ω m (argillaceous shale), and the resistivity decreases with an increase in porosity. The siliceous shale has the most abundant authigenic quartz, which filled the primary pores forming a rigid framework during the gas window, inhibited compaction, increased the distribution of organic matter (OM), and enhanced the development of OM pores. The high TOC content and high maturity of siliceous shale at the bottom of Longmaxi Formation make the OM pores more developed. Pyrite, conductive fluid and pore network under the main control of OM pores in shale form a conductive circuit when AC voltage is input, which increases the exchange capacity of cations and leads to the phenomenon of low resistivity. The interconnected OM pore network, both depositionally and diagenetically derived, affects the electrical properties of the Longmaxi shale. This study reveals that electrical properties of shale rocks and its variations can be impacted by the depositional environment and diagenetic processes. Based on comprehensive studies in petrography, petrofabric analysis and geochemistry, this paper describes a unique and rare laminated micritic ferruginous primary dolostone crystallized and precipitated from the alkaline hot brine under the conditions of the Mesozoic faulted lake basin. The main rock-forming mineral of this dolostone is ferruginous dolomite with a micritic structure. This dolomite mostly exhibits laminae of 0.1–1 mm thick and is often discovered with other minerals, such as albite, analcite, barite and dickite, which have at least two types of interbedded laminae. Petrogeochemistry reveals that this dolostone contains a large number of typomorphic elements of hydrothermal sedimentation, including Sb, Ba, Sr, Mn, and V. In addition, the LREE is in relatively high concentrations and possesses the typical REE distribution pattern with negative Eu anomaly. Oxygen isotope values (δ 18O PDB) range from 5.89‰ to 14.15‰ with an average of 9.69‰. The ratio of 87Sr/ 86Sr is between 0.711648 and 0.719546, with an average of 0.714718. These data indicate that the depositional environment is a stable, blocked, anoxic low-lying hot brine pool in the bottom of deep lake controlled by basement faults. The hydrothermal fluid is the alkaline hot brine formed by the combination of the infiltration lake water and mantle-derived magmatic water, consisting of many ions, including Ca 2+, Mg 2+ and Fe 2+. Under the driving flow power of magmatic heat, gravity and compaction, the hydrothermal fluid overcame the overburden pressure and hydrostatic pressure of the lake water body, and boiled to explosion, and then the explosion shattered the original laminated micritic ferruginous primary dolostone near the vent and then formed a new type of dolostone called shattered “hydroexplosion breccias”. In the low-lying, unperturbed hot brine pool, far from the vent, the laminated micritic ferruginous primary dolostone was quickly crystallized and chemicals precipitated from the hydrotherm. This study of special rocks contributes to research into the causes of the formation of lacustrine carbonate rocks and dolostone. The Lower Triassic Jialingjiang Formation, characterised by a carbonate–evaporite succession, is one of the important pay layers in the eastern Sichuan Basin. Several diagenetic events were identified in this study, including meteoric dissolution, dolomitisation, anhydrite/gypsum replacement/cementation, TSR, BSR, and multiple calcite cementation (C1–C3). Dolomitisation and anhydrite/gypsum replacement/cementation are the major diagenetic events affecting reservoir porosity. The dolostone is composed of D1, D2, and D3 dolomite. D1 dolomite is very finely crystalline, dominating in the low-energy, restricted depositional facies. D2 dolomite is finely crystalline, constituting a major portion of the dolostones. D3 dolomite is depositional fabric retentive dolomite, including dolo-wacke-/packstone, dolo-grainstone, and dolo-boundstone. Four types of anhydrites (A1–A4) were identified in the core and thin sections. A1 is stratabound anhydrite. A2 is the anhydrite in dolostones, filling in the interparticle spaces in dolo-grainstone and the intraparticle spaces in dolo-wackestone. A3 is the anhydrite in limestones, which occurs non-fabric-selectively. A4 is the anhydrite filling in the fractures. The diagenetic anhydrites (A2–A4) are interpreted to postdate to major dolomitisation. D1 and D2 dolomites are characterised by δ13C VPDB values of −3.4–+7.3 ‰ and δ18O VPDB values of −4.7−-2.4 ‰. The REE patterns of D1–D3 dolomites are characterised by light rare earth element (LREE) depletion relative to heavy rare earth elements (HREE) ((Pr/Tm) N of 0.54–1.16, 0.81 ± 0.20), middle rare earth elements (MREE) enrichment (BSI values of 1.06–1.38, 1.26 ± 0.10), and negative Ce anomalies (Ce/Ce* ratios of 0.74–0.94, 0.83 ± 0.07). The diagenetic anhydrites (A2–A4) show δ34S V-CDT values of +25.9–+45.7 ‰, similar to those of the stratabound anhydrite (+29.6–+43.0 ‰). The large variations in the δ13C VPDB values of D1 and D2 dolomites are attributed to methanogenesis and BSR. The δ18O VPDB values and REE characteristics of D1–D3 dolomites suggest that the carbonates are dolomitised by the mesohaline fluid. The δ34S V-CDT values of A1–A4 indicate that the diagenetic anhydrites are formed by redistribution in a closed system. The petrographical and geochemical data suggest that the Jialingjiang carbonate evolved in a closed system during burial diagenesis. Primary pores dominate in the Jialingjiang carbonate reservoirs, and the boundstone and grainstone show the best porosities based on the porosityversus lithofacies data. Therefore, we propose that the lithofacies, instead of the diagenetic events, are the key factors of the Jialingjiang carbonate. In the Late Paleozoic Fengcheng Formation of the NW Junggar Basin, NW China, the two borates, especially reedmergnerite, occur as locally abundant minerals of potential economic interest. Here, petrology, minerology, and boron isotopes of different reedmergnerite occurrences in the Fengcheng Formation were systematically studied to explore its enrichment mechanism in sedimentary rocks. Reedmergnerite in the Fengcheng Formation is a temperature-controlled (crystallizing at 55–180 ℃, mainly at 90–110 ℃) and diagenetic replacive mineral. In the lake center deposits of the Fengcheng Formation, reedmergnerite is confined within sodium carbonate beds or nodules and shows a clear replacement of sodium carbonate minerals. In the lake slope deposits, reedmergnerite is also very abundant and mainly replaces calcite or dolomite-ankerite within sub-horizontal fractures or shortite/eitelite crystal molds, occasionally seen replacing bedded searlesite or growing both replacively and displacively in organic-rich matrix. No significant reedmergnerite is found in the lake margin deposits. Boron isotopes of reedmergnerite-bearing samples (–0.04‰ to + 7.69‰) are higher than those of lacustrine mudstone samples (–14.2 to + 2.79‰) and overlap those of ignimbrite samples (+2.37 to + 3.87‰). Boron for diagenetic reedmergnerite formation was primarily inherited from the original hydrothermal fluids that flowed into lakes and its concentration was influenced by lake water pH and salinity. Potential early boron reservoirs were searlesite, sodium carbonates, organic matter and tuff materials. Fluids responsible for reedmergnerite replacement were weakly acidic. CO 2 generated by organic matter degradation-maturation and carbonate dissolution acted as a mineralizer to promote reedmergnerite formation at a lower temperature range than the previously synthetic temperatures (>270 ℃). Enrichment of reedmergnerite in sedimentary rocks requires a primary volcanic-related evaporated lake with high organic productivity, and meanwhile a deep burial environment, at best reaching the depth of oil generation window. Channels are considered effective conduits that deliver terrigenous sediments into related depositional basins, and they are the targets of petroleum exploration and production. Three-dimensional (3D) seismic data, well data, and attribute maps were used to study five types of channels observed in the Shahejie Formation of the Zhanhua Depression, namely erosional channels, confined channels, semi-confined channels, distributary channels, and transitional channels. The channels originated from hyperpycnal flows related to bed load, suspended load, and lofting processes from proximal to distal regions, which were primarily accumulated on medium and low terrains. The hyperpycnal channel systems were primarily identified as three stages with morphological changes in the Es3l and Es3m intervals on a seismic section. Stage 1 was developed during the late period of the Es3l interval, and stages 2 and 3 were developed during the early and middle periods, respectively, of the Es3m interval. Stage 1 is the initial/young stage formed during a phase of low accommodation. Channels of stage 1 are predominantly entrenched with moderately aggregated width and thick channelized splays. Stage 2 is the transitional stage formed during a phase of increasing accommodation. Channels of stage 2 are predominantly meandering with narrowly aggregated width and dispersed frontal splays. Stage 3 is a waned stage, formed during the events of increasing lake levels without comparable increase in sediment flux. This stage involves slight incisions, broad U-shaped morphology channels, and the prevalence of overbank sediments. The depositional architectures, processes, and the development of hyperpycnal channel systems correspond with the lake level and climate conditions of the proposed stages and were controlled by tectonic activity and source supply. Travertines are generally considered as carbonate deposits related to Ca-rich hot springs. Ca-deficiency hot springs, however, can also produce travertines under suitable conditions and little is known about the travertine deposition and diagenesis in these systems. Therefore, we studied a fossil perched Ca-deficiency spring system at Shihuadong, China to discuss its genesis and diagenesis. This system is a platform-like build-up with travertines developing mainly in the steep frontal area. The travertines were deposited from high-temperature fluids (dominantly 45 °C to 55 °C) with strong interaction mostly with underground Gaoligong Group metamorphic rocks. Their parent CO 2 was originated from magmatic CO 2 and a little soil CO 2. The travertine-depositing paleofluid was predominantly Ca-deficiency hot spring water, but stream water possibly from cold springs on surrounding hills might make a small contribution. The low calcium levels and flat substrate on the top area of the studied system handicapped the travertine deposition, only developing a small perched travertine channel entirely composed of crystalline crust. On the contrary, progressive CO 2 degassing in the top area and increasing CO 2 degassing and water flow rates in the frontal area induced the formation of abundant travertines. However, water scattering/dispersion in the frontal area might not heavily increase the water flow rate and only induced boundstone deposition. After the travertine deposition, underground thermal water, meteoric water, and microbial activity progressively altered the primary fabrics, forming mosaic and need fiber calcite cements, dissolution pores, microborings, and dissolution-induced and microbe-induced micritization. The studied perched spring system shows limited scales, notable progradation but slight aggradation, and the dearth of distal autochthonous travertines, unlike those formed by Ca-rich hot springs, which might extend widely and produce striking distal travertine deposits away from the frontal slope/waterfall. These findings suggest the significant roles of water chemistry and local topography in travertine deposition and the influence of slowly underground thermal water seeping on the diagenesis of travertines in hilly areas and might be used to recognize fossil Ca-deficiency and Ca-rich hot spring systems. This study describes and interprets the mineral and facies assemblages of lacustrine shales that occurred in an ancient volcanic-related alkaline playa-lake, considering the importance of diagenetic pathways (calcification, dolomitization, borosilicate replacement, and silicification). Three laminated lithofacies (LF) have been differentiated in the Early Permian Fengcheng Formation, NW Junggar Basin: an alginite-poor, dolomite-lean, and argillaceous-rich lithofacies deposited during high lake level stages (LF-A), an alginite-moderate, dolomite-moderate, and evaporite-present lithofacies deposited during low lake level stages (LF-B), and an alginite-dense, dolomite-rich and reedmergnerite (NaBSi 3 O 8)-rich lithofacies deposited during periods of intense hydrothermal input (LF-C). Depositional environments influenced subsequent diagenetic pathways of the three laminated lithofacies. In the shallow-water LF-B sediments, extensive evaporite crystallization, dissolution and subsequent calcification or dolomitization occurred during eodiagenesis. The deep-water LF-A sediments underwent slight eodiagenetic modifications, but developed abundant calcite-filling sub-horizontal fractures during moderate inversion and uplift in mesodiagenetic regime. With increasing depth of burial, the previous vugs-filling calcite and dolomite were preserved well or only slightly replaced by reedmergnerite in the LF-A and LF-B sediments, but intensely replaced by reedmergnerite in the LF-C sediments during mesodiagenesis. The reedmergnerite enrichment processes in the LF-C sediments were closely related to organic matter production and thermal evolution. Algae blooms induced by spring input functioned as an important media in sinking hydrothermal boron from the not very concentrated waters. Later degradation and thermal evolution of alginite released boron and organic acids into interstitial waters, which caused carbonate dissolution and promoted reedmergnerite formation. The Early Toarcian "Oceanic Anoxic Event" (T-OAE) is recorded by marked disruption to both the climate system and marine ecosystems. Here, we present intergraded high-resolution carbon-isotope data (δ13C), bulk geochemistry, mineral characterization from an open-ocean setting in the eastern Tethys. With these data, we (1) construct the high-resolution record of the T-OAE from an open-ocean setting in the eastern Tethys; (2) show that the T-OAE in the Sewa succession was marked by coarser-grained deposits associated with high-energy conditions within the otherwise low-energy claystone deposits that likely linked to a globally increased supply of clastic sediments into marginal and deeper marine basin; (3) propose that the low Corg:Ptotal ratios, in combination with bioturbated structure and depletion or slight enrichment in redox-sensitive trace elements of V, Mo, and U suggest a long-term oxygenation event throughout the T-OAE interval at the Sewa succession, and hence, anoxia may not play a fundamental role during the Toarcian negative CIE in this setting; (4) exhibit that a warming and more humid climate began at the start of the T-OAE, and many episodic changes in sediment provenance throughout the T-OAE interval occurred at this location; and (5) suggest that accumulation of organic-matter sediments during the T-OAE is generally controlled by global climatic changes, but a regional environmental perturbation also might influence the preservation of organic matter. Siliceous mudstones and chert-shale couplets are primary source rocks for many large paleo-oil reservoirs over the world. It is well established that photosynthetic organisms can be exceptionally well preserved in silica precipitates, but the fate of the trapped organic matter (OM) during burial remains poorly studied. Here, dense unicellular microbial fossils have been recently discovered in the cherts of the Late Paleozoic alkaline saline lake deposit in NW Junggar Basin, NW China. We use petrographic observations and organic geochemical analysis to study the origin of unicellular microbes and how silicified organic matter generate and expel hydrocarbons. A 300-m-long oil shale core shows overall low levels of porosity, permeability and total organic carbon contents (generally <0.5 wt%), but very high extracts (on average 0.26 wt%), suggesting that the rich extracts were mostly indigenous and the original organic matter had a high hydrocarbon conversion. Analysis of biomarkers and silicified fossils both suggest that the bio-precursor for the organic matter is a special green alga. Reconstruction of silica diagenesis of cherts indicates that both the trapped lipids and hydrocarbons in silicified microbial cells and extracellular polymeric substances had been effectively expelled out during the transformations of Opal-A to microcrystalline quartz and during OM thermal maturation. Oceanic de‑oxygenation is considered to have been an important kill mechanism contributing to the latest Permian mass extinction and subsequent protracted recovery of marine biotas, but its extent, magnitude, and related controlling factors remain controversial. Here, we undertake a synthesis and reevaluation of previously published Fe-S-P-N data to better understand spatial and temporal variation of marine de‑oxygenation along a proximal-to-distal gradient in the eastern Paleotethys Ocean during the Permian-Triassic transition. Our results indicate: i) transient oxygenation of outer-shelf to basinal settings and de‑oxygenation of middle-shelf settings at the extinction horizon; ii) in outer-shelf to basinal settings, a shift from episodically euxinic conditions in the latest Permian (C. changxingensis Zone) to mainly ferruginous conditions in the earliest Triassic (H. parvus-I. isarcica zones); and iii) in middle-shelf settings, a shift from oxic-dysoxic (C. changxingensis Zone) to euxinic (C. yini - C. meishanensis zones) and then back to oxic conditions (H. parvus - I. isarcica zones). Proximal-to-distal redox variations are closely linked to spatial gradients in the marine sulfur, nitrogen and phosphorous cycles. A global comparison demonstrates that the Paleotethys, Neotethys, Boreal, and Panthalassic oceans all experienced shallow-marine de‑oxygenation during the latest Permian mass extinction, which may have been a major factor in the marine biocrisis. Globally, the extent and magnitude of oceanic de‑oxygenation presented a link to the distance to the Siberian Traps Large Igneous Province and, thus, to the volume of volcanic-related sulfur release during the Permian-Triassic boundary crisis. In the case of modern river sediments, source rocks, tectonic setting, and climatic and geomorphological conditions are fully known, diagenetic effects are by definition none, and physical and chemical processes during erosion, transport, and deposition can be investigated directly in any required detail. Their study thus provides the fundamental information needed to understand the impact of various controls on sediment generation and sediment routing systems in diverse geological settings. With the growing interest in source‐to‐sink sedimentary systems for economic purposes, researchers have focused more and more on modern environments, producing an ever‐increasing amount of compositional data on river sediments. To better integrate and utilize these large datasets, we systematically compiled a global database of 4,208 fluvial sediment samples compiled from 100 published papers, book chapters, and dissertations and included 3,747 petrographic and 1,943 heavy‐mineral analyses. The analysed samples are mostly located in Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America, with fewer examples from North America and Oceania. Each sample is complemented by metadata describing references, river name, geographic location, sampling date, analytical method, and grain size, so that samples can be grouped and filtered to meet different needs including comparison with other datasets. There are abundant natural gas resources in the Lower Triassic Jialingjiang Formation in the Eastern Sichuan Basin (ESB). Important progress has been made in the study of reservoir characteristics and sedimentary facies of marine reef-beach facies in the Jialingjiang Formation. However, there are still differences in the understanding of its natural gas origin and gas source rocks, which greatly restricts the understanding of the reservoir forming process and formation mechanism of the gas reservoirs, so further study is urgently needed. Based on experimental tests of natural gas composition, stable isotopes, and noble gas isotopes with gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS) studies of source rocks and reservoir asphalt saturated hydrocarbons, the natural gas geochemical characteristics, genetic identification and gas-source comparison of the Jialingjiang Formation were studied. The results showed that (1) the natural gas of the Jialingjiang Formation was mainly hydrocarbon gas, and methane was dominant. The average drying coefficient was 99.266%, which is typical of high maturity dry gas reservoirs. The δ13C 1 , δ13C 2 and δ13C 3 values ranged from −36.00‰ to 24.80‰, −37.80‰–27.60‰ and −39.20‰–23.20‰, respectively. The δD 1 , δD 2 and δD 3 values were between −164.00‰ and −124.00‰, −162.00‰ and −111.00‰ and −173.21‰ and −71.00‰, respectively. (2) The natural gas has a crustal source origin, which was mainly oil-type thermogenic gas generated by secondary cracking of crude oil. The gas-generating parent material is mainly partial sapropelic kerogen and was in the sedimentary environment of salt to brackish water. (3) The natural gas was mainly generated by argillaceous source rocks of the Upper Permian Longtan Formation. (4) The natural gas accumulation in the Jialingjiang Formation has experienced three stages, including paleo-oil reservoir, paleo-gas reservoir and current gas reservoir. The Archaeocyathid Extinction Carbon Isotope Excursion (AECE) and Mingxinsi Carbon Isotope Excursion (MICE) are major events in the Early Cambrian sedimentary records but controversially heterogeneous in their magnitudes, as well as local and global correlations. This paper presents a high-resolution δ13C carb profile from the Shiliu section in the western Yangtze Platform (China) that spans the lower part of the Lower Cambrian. The investigated Lower Tianheban interval (∼110 m) is dominated by marine carbonates (lime mudstones) alternating occasionally with thinly-bedded black shale and mudstone interbeds. The investigated micritic carbonates were examined through a multi-technique protocol, combining petrographic and geochemical assessments, to evaluate the degree of sample preservation. The δ13C carb values (−2.4‰–1.8‰) show an insignificant correlation with the δ18O carb values (−12.6‰ to −8.7‰, R2 = 0.012), the Mn/Sr ratios (R2 = 0.001), and Al concentrations (R2 = 0.041). This supports the preservation of predominantly at least near-primary δ13C carb signatures, which can be utilized to reconstruct a reliable, high-resolution δ13C carb profile for chemostratigraphic correlations in the area and beyond. The profile displays a lower positive excursion of ∼3‰ overlain immediately by a negative excursion of ∼2.3‰. The archaeocyath zonation scheme suggests that the lower excursion is correlated with the global MICE event and the upper excursion with the AECE event. Karst rocks from the Huanglong Formation exposed at the margin of the Eastern Sichuan Basin can be divided into four types: slightly corroded, moderately corroded porous, intensely corroded brecciated and intensely corroded and replaced secondary calcic karstic rocks. The carbon, oxygen and strontium isotope compositions of the various karst rocks are analyzed systematically and compared to rocks without karst corrosion. The results indicate that (1) the Huanglong Formation in the eastern Sichuan Basin was a restricted bay supplied and controlled by freshwater in which mud-micrite and mud-dolomicrite exhibit low δ13C and δ18O values and high 87Sr/86Sr ratios; (2) all types of karstic rocks in the paleokarst reservoirs of the Huanglong Formation in the research area are affected by atmospheric freshwater with the δ13C and δ18O values and 87Sr/86Sr ratios in the original formation approaching those of atmospheric freshwater, which reflects ancient hydrological conditions, fluid properties, isotopic source and the fractionation effect; (3) the intensely corroded and replaced secondary limestone is affected by a variety of diagenetic fluids, often reflected by δ13C and δ18O values, while the 87Sr/86Sr ratios exhibit the strong degree of the corrosion; (4) after comparing the 87Sr/86Sr ratios of each type of karst rock, the diagenetic fluids are determined to be mainly atmospheric freshwater, and depending on the strength of corrosion, and the low 87Sr/86Sr ratio fluids in the layer will participate in the karst process. The carbon, oxygen, and strontium isotopes of different karstic reservoirs can provide meaningful geochemical information for forecasting and evaluating the development and distribution rules of the Huanglong Formation at the margin of the eastern Sichuan Basin in time and space. • The thermal decomposition of marine carbonates and metasediments is a source of CO 2. • The radioactive decay of U and Th within crustal granite is the dominant source of He. • Three thermal reservoirs were identified using multiple gas geothermometers. • The parent geothermal fluid had a temperature of ∼320 °C at an ∼8-km depth. • Yangbajing has no supercritical fluids, given its small, deep-seated magma chamber. Exploring and exploiting high-temperature (even supercritical) geothermal resources are significant to meet energy demands and reduce carbon emissions. The Yangbajing geothermal field is the most exploited in China, with the currently highest temperature (329.8 °C) measured in a geothermal well. However, whether there are supercritical geothermal fluids beneath the deep parts of this geothermal field is under controversy. In this paper, the water isotope, chemical compositions, and C–He isotopes of gas samples were collected and analyzed. The geothermal water originated from the mixing of meteoric water and magmatic water (25%). The sources of CO 2 in the geothermal field were dominated by the thermogenic degassing of carbonates and metasediments in the crust while the radioactive decay of U and Th in granite is the dominated source of He. The temperatures of three different reservoirs are 150 ± 15 °C, 250 ± 10 °C, and ∼320 °C (with a depth of ∼8 km), respectively. These were obtained using dissolved gas, soil CO 2 flux, and noble gas geothermometers. Unlike other supercritical geothermal fields worldwide with larger, shallower, basaltic magma chambers, the Yangbajing geothermal field has a deep-seated, small-scale, granitic magma chamber. Thus, its geological conditions are not conducive for gestating supercritical fluids. High-temperature SiO2-rich springs are one of the most indicative manifestations of deep geothermal activities. Although they often represent the valuable geothermal potentials and significances of the areas, their high SiO2 contents usually bring some non-negligible problems when we exploit the geothermal resources, especially the silica scales. To understand the sedimentation sequences of SiO2-rich hot springs and to expose its potential relationships with natural sinter deposits and silica scales in geothermal plants, this study make a couple of analyses of the water and solid samples collected from a natural SiO2-rich hot spring in Tengchong (i.e. Dagunguo spring) and isothermal evaporation experiments, including water chemistry analyses, X-ray diffraction, thin-section observation, and electron microscopy analyses. The modern sinters in Dagunguo spring are amorphous SiO2 which is largely formed of tight siliceous layers and some amorphous SiO2 spheres. Some silicified microorganisms, elemental sulfur, and clay are also found. The Dagunguo spring water is Na–Cl–HCO3-type SiO2-rich water, with a pH of about 8 and low dissolved concentrations of Al3+, Fe3+ and Mg2+. Isothermal evaporation (T = 84 °C) resulted in a sequence of precipitated minerals: amorphous SiO2 → halite → sodium sesquicarbonate dihydrate (trona) → potassium chloride (sylvine), accompanied by calcite, hydrous sodium sulfate (mirabilite) and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). The amorphous SiO2 produced in the evaporation experiments exhibited different shapes and structures than the spherical opal-A formed by hot spring water precipitation under natural conditions. The study of precipitation sequence and minerals of hot spring water provides insight into the scaling mechanism of silica-rich geothermal water and anti-scaling measures that can be applied in the process of exploitation and utilization of geothermal resources. Authigenic silicates are typical minerals of alkaline lake deposits. Their mineral composition and lateral distribution can be used for reconstructing paleoclimates, paleoenvironments, and diagenetic subsidence histories of hydrocarbon reservoirs. In particular the examples of pre-Mesozoic alkaline lake deposits were widely missing in the literature. To unveil this, a basin-wide high-resolution mineralogical investigation is conducted on the Late Paleozoic volcanic-related alkaline lake deposit of the Fengcheng Formation in the NW Junggar Basin, NW China. The investigated Late Paleozoic shales mainly contain stable silicates like K-feldspar, albite and reedmergnerite. Laterally, the authigenic silicates are mostly distributed in the lake-central and transitional zones and are especially abundant in organic-rich shales. Authigenic K-feldspar and albite were mainly formed by replacing detrital clay minerals and K-feldspar or directly precipitating from alkaline porewaters. Reedmergnerite was later formed by replacing acid-sensitive carbonate or feldspar minerals when organic matter was mature. Organic matter thermal maturation and hydrocarbon generation helped lower porewater pH and periodically open diagenetic systems. These processes facilitated fluid migration and element exchanges and promoted the transformation of thermodynamically unstable silicates and acid-sensitive carbonates to more stable silicates and quartz. A main result of this study is thus to emphasize the control of organic matter diagenesis and temperature on authigenic silicate evolution. The marine carbonate rock in the Changxing-Feixianguan Formation of Xuanhan-Daxian area, northeastern Sichuan, the Sichuan Basin holds abundant natural gas resource, where the dolomite includes two types, the one with original texture (grain dolomite, reef dolomite) and the one without original texture (idiomorphic to anhedral-crystal dolomite, porphyritic dolomite). The analysis on the isotopes of C, O, Sr and other geochemical features shows that the dolomitizing process happened in fluid rich in Mg2+ and lean in Ca2+ and brought in Fe2+, Mn2+ and took out Sr2+; with the rise of recrystallization, the Fe2+, Mn2+ contents tend to increase while δ18O PDB and Srcontent tend to decrease. According to the variation of 87Sr/86Sr and other geochemical features, it is considered that the dolomitizing fluid participating in the reservoir diagenesisis the high salinity sea water later than the end of Feixianguan stage, and the dolomitization takes place mainly through the multiple thermal convective cycle effect. The micritic dolomite is of evaporative dolomitization origin with the characteristics of high Sr2+, Na+ and low Mn2+ which reflects the open environment of the surface exposed in the quasi syngenetic period, while the reef dolomite is of high Mg/Ca dolomitizing fluid origin with the characteristics of lowSr2+, Na+ and Mn2+, whose diagenetic environment changed from near surface to shallow burial environment; crystalline dolomite is formed by metasomatism of low Mg/Ca dolomitizing fluid at deep burial depth and high temperature, with the increase of burial depth,in the high temperature and high pressure deep sealing system, its Fe2+ and Mn2+ elements increased while Sr2+ decreased. Through reconstruction of dynamic diagenesis-pore evolution, it is concluded that the low porosity of shallow beach grain dolomite is resulted from early compaction and medium-term cementation, yet the reservoir quality has been apparently improved by the later hydrocarbon dissolution; compared with shallow beach grain dolomite,the reef dolomite has smaller initial porosity, but stronger compressive capacity. The early compaction and medium-term cementation have less impact on the reef dolomite, and the later dissolution strength is slightly weaker than that of the granular dolomite, thus the change range of porosity is smaller than that of the grain dolomite; the micrite-silt dolomite mainly suffered porosity reduction caused by compaction, and the later burial dissolution and recrystallization are key to the quality improvement of this kind of dolomite reservoir. • There are two types of dolomite in the study area: the original fabric and without original fabric. • The high salinity marine source fluid of late period is involved in the dolomitization process of dolomite reservoir. • Dissolution is the key to the formation of high quality reservoir. • Compaction and cementation are the key factors to reduce the porosity of dolomite reservoir. The Carnian Pluvial Event (CPE) is recorded widely across the Tethys region. Here we present high-resolution carbonate (δ13C carb) and organic (δ13C org) carbon-isotope records and mineral data from the Boli La to lower Bagong formations in the Quemo Co area of the Qiangtang Basin, Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. In this studied section, a calcareous fine-grained sandstone bed that yields a detrital zircon maximum depositional age of 232.5 ± 3.3 Ma, together with ammonoid species and bivalves, allows identification of the Carnian Stage. An intensification of siliciclastic supply and a large drop in calcite and illite is recorded in the Carnian section, suggesting a palaeoclimatic shift from arid to warm and humid during the CPE. A negative carbon-isotope excursion (CIE) in both δ13C org and δ13C carb is also reported, which could be explained by a global perturbation of the carbon cycle and the release of CO 2 enriched in 12C. The magnitude of the negative CIE in the Quemo Co area displays a significant shift towards lighter values compared to other reported carbonate carbon-isotope values across the onset of the CPE. The Toarcian (Early Jurassic) sediments are regarded as the most significant hydrocarbon source rocks in the Qiangtang Basin, Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. In this study, geochemical and mineralogical data are reported from the Middle to Late Toarcian organic-lean sediments in the Qiangtang Basin, eastern Tethys. Combined with previous studies, the factors that control organic matter (OM) accumulation during the Toarcian are investigated. The Early Toarcian organic-rich sediments were deposited in stratified water column with oxygen-deficient bottom water, which was conducive to OM preservation. A warm and humid paleoclimatic condition favored the growth of organisms, which in turn could enhance the surficial biotic productivity. During the Middle to Late Toarcian, oxic waterbody was widely distributed in the Qiangtang Basin. This condition was unbeneficial to the preservation of OM. During this interval, a cold–arid climate had an adverse effect on organism growth, which in turn would reduce the initial productivity of surface water. The consistently low Ti/Al and Si/Al ratios revealed restricted but rather homogeneous clastic influx conditions during the Toarcian. This may suggest that the dilution of terrigenous material input had a little influence on OM accumulation. In addition, the differential enrichment of OM between shales and marls should attribute to carbonate dilution. The Barremian and Aptian correspond to periods of marked changes in the atmosphere-ocean system, and offer valuable information about global tectonic events. Here, we present integrated high-resolution carbonate carbon-isotope (δ13C carb) and geochemical data that precede the Early Aptian oceanic anoxic event (OAE 1 a) in the Qiangtang Basin (Eastern Tethys). We identified a characteristic and well-correlatable Barremian-Lower Aptian carbon-isotope pattern that can be categorized into 10 Segments. The most notable features of the δ13C carb record are multiple negative carbon-isotope excursions in the Barremian-Aptian, and each is possibly linked to environmental changes. Two carbon isotopic plateaus are observed in the Upper Barremian, which are generally related to increased primary productivity, and to the concomitant development of dys-to anaerobic conditions. Our data indicate the development of anoxic conditions during shale deposition, which occurred under the conditions of a semi-enclosed lagoon environment. Such conditions, were likely localized, and not the primary mechanism responsible for the deposition of organic-rich sediments within the Shenglihe succession. The deposition of organic-rich shales was very likely due to global/regional warming. Rising temperatures and hydrological cycle strengthening during shale deposition are believed to have increased primary productivity, and thus resulted in the expansion of the local oxygen minimum zone within the water column. • Barremian was a time of marked changes in the atmosphere-ocean system. • δ13C record is subdivided into 10 δ13C segments prior to the OAE 1a. • Positive carbon isotope excursion is prominent in the Upper Barremian. • Global warming would raise surface productivity. Intrabasinal slope belts, which were previously thought to lack sandy sediments, have been largely understudied due to their distance from their sediment provenance. Thus, our study sought to conduct a comprehensive geological study of the facies architecture and sediment infilling processes in the intrabasinal slope belts of the Zhanhua Depression during the Paleogene using seismic data, drill cores and well logs. Three distinctive depositional systems were identified: near-shore subaqueous fan, shallow/deep lakes, and braided-river delta. The facies architecture and sediment infilling processes were primarily characterized by different stages of diversiform tectonic geomorphologies in cyclothem motifs of rift lacustrine basins. The geomorphological characteristics of the Shahejie Formation exhibited multiple alternating uplifts and sags, resulting in multiple intra- and extra-basinal sediment provenances, while those of the Dongying Formation displayed a single depocenter with a wide and gentle geomorphology derived from several extra-basinal sediment provenances. Coarse-grained sediments formed near-shore subaqueous fans, primarily accumulated on the slopes around the Kenli Uplift during the member 3 of the Shehejie Formation interval; medium- and fine-grained sediments deposited in the proximal and distal environment of the delta front and sandy sediments formed thick-bedded sandy beach bars on subaqueous uplifts during member 2 of the Shehejie Formation interval; ultrafine-grained, fine-grained, and carbonate sediments deposited as thin-bedded carbonate banks and sandy beach bars in a shallow/deep lake during member 1 of the Shehejie Formation interval; and fine-to medium-grained sediments abundantly accumulated in the proximal environment of the delta front by passing the uplifts and infilling the slopes during the Dongying Formation interval. This integrated study demonstrates the effectiveness of a process-based analytical approach and depositional models in predicting facies architecture and sediment infilling processes. The Lower Cambrian Longwangmiao Formation is a significant deep carbonate (dolomite) reservoir that has great hydrocarbon potential in the Sichuan Basin, South China. However, the origin of the Longwangmiao dolomite and the mechanism of dolomitization remain a debate that needs better understanding due to its crucial importance in determining reservoir quality. In the current study, a multi-technique approach of petrography, geochemistry (C- and O-isotopes, major and trace elements including rare earth elements), and microthermometry has been applied to reconstruct the mechanisms of dolomitization. Petrographic examinations revealed three types of matrix dolomite: (1) near-micritic (dolomicrite), fabric retentive texture (Md1, 10–50 μm), (2) finely to medium crystalline dolomite, subhedral to euhedral crystals (Md2, 60–120 μm), and (3) medium to coarsely crystalline dolomite, subhedral to nonplanar crystals (Md3, 100–300 μm). The similarity of PAAS-normalized REE patterns of the investigated dolomites to that of their precursor lime mudstone and their δ13C (C1 = 0.3 ± 0.3‰, Md1 = −1.3 ± 0.6‰, Md2 = −0.6 ± 1.6‰, and Md3 = 0.3 ± 1.5‰) and δ18O (C1 = −9.4 ± 0.2‰, Md1 = −7.8 ± 0.8‰, Md2 = −8.7 ± 0.5‰, and Md3 = −8.9 ± 0.6‰) values suggest that the parent dolomitizing fluids of Md1, Md2, and Md3 dolomites were likely modified seawater. The significant enrichment of Na (1266 ± 1316 ppm) and K (4649 ± 3199 ppm), tight structure and presence of moldic pores in Md1 and its slightly elevated δ18O values suggest that it formed in a near-surface (i.e., mesosaline to penesaline) environment from slightly evaporated seawater, which is consistent with its Sr/Ca molar ratios (0.0075−0.0090). The Md2 dolomite is crosscut by stylolites and has a coarser grain size, higher Mn (295 ± 172 ppm), Nd SN /Yb SN (1.33 ± 0.06) and U (0.49 ± 0.11 ppm), and lower Ce/Ce* (0.83 ± 0.02) values than Md1. This suggests a shallow to mid-burial dolomitization with possible downwards seepage-reflux of Mg2+-rich evaporated brines. The Md3 dolomite has the largest crystal size and mosaic contacts, lowest Ce/Ce* (0.81 ± 0.02), and highest U (0.64 ± 0.15 ppm) and Mn (487 ± 240 ppm) values, which imply a deeper dolomitization environment than Md2. Thus, it precipitated likely in a mid-to deep burial setting at a higher temperature (T h = 120−135 °C), from the residual Mg2+-rich fluids stored in the strata pores. The Middle−Upper Xixiangchi Formation of the Sichuan Basin consists of mixed carbonates and siliciclastics. The carbonates are dominated by dolomitized lime-mudstones and dolo–grainstones of shallow warm-water environments. Petrographic examination of carbonates reveals two types of dolomite: (i) fabric retentive dolomicrite (D1, micritic to near-micritic, 4–50 μm) and (ii) fabric-destructive dolomite (eu-to subhedral crystals with cloudy cores and clear rims, 50–300 μm). The mean ∑REE values of D1 (15.3 ± 6.3 ppm) and D2 (14.6 ± 7.1 ppm) and the nearly identical mean PAAS-normalized patterns that coincide at some points, suggest an origin from similar parent fluids that were not dramatically changed by water-rock interaction through basinal sedimentary rocks. The estimated Sr/Ca molar ratios of D1 (0.0043–0.0055) parent fluids and their estimated δ18O values imply an origin from a mixture of meteoric and seawaters, which is also consistent with the petrographic evidence. The partially coinciding normalized REE pattern of D2 with that of the earlier D1 suggests that the latter was formed at a mid-burial setting rather than deep burial, which is consistent with higher homogenization temperatures of primary two-phased fluid inclusions retained in D2 (T h = 118.1 ± 5.3 °C). Therefore, D1 is suggested to have formed (1) during a penecontemporaneous period that resulted from a slight evaporative pumping effect within a near-surface diagenetic environment, and/or (2) during post-penecontemporaneous or penecontemporaneous seepage-reflux dolomitization, induced by sea-level fluctuations, during early stages of diagenesis at near-surface conditions. They thus serve as good natural laboratories to study abiotic and biotic factors controlling the precipitation of different carbonate minerals and CaCO 3 polymorphism. Through tens of years' investigations on travertines, considerable advances about carbonate mineral precipitation have been made. Here, we summarized general hydrological features of travertine systems, and driving forces, microenvironments, and mechanisms of the precipitation of different carbonate minerals in travertine-depositing hot springs by integrating present advances and conducting hydrochemical simulations. Travertine-depositing hot springs can be divided into near-neutral pH hot springs and hyperalkaline hot springs and contain four types of microenvironments: hypogean solid-water interface, epigean solid-water interface, air-water interface, and subaerial exposure surface. Both abiotic (passive CO 2 degassing, atmospheric CO 2 uptake, evaporation, and fluid mixing) and biotic (metabolism, organism-related crystal nucleation, and trapping and binding) processes may drive carbonate formation. The specific driving forces, however, depend on bulk water hydrochemistry and microenvironments. Calcite and aragonite are the most common minerals in travertines and the calcite-aragonite polymorphism might be under decisive influences from bulk water chemistry, especially [Mg2+]/[Ca2+], in some conditions. However, calcium carbonate precipitation in hot springs is controlled by solute transport in microenvironments, and any local change induced by hydrodynamics, microorganisms, and extracellular polymeric substances may significantly modify CaCO 3 precipitation and polymorphism. Such integrated control from bulk water composition and microenvironments also affects the formation of other carbonate minerals, but their exact roles remain unclear. Overall, despite the fruitful recent findings, further investigations, especially those focusing on microenvironments, are still imperative to better understand carbonate precipitation in hot springs. Complex lithology association along vertical direction results in thin layers with different interbed patterns of the Lower Triassic Jialingjiang Formation (T 1 j), Sichuan Basin. The prediction of thin tight reservoirs in the Jialingjiang Formation is important for further oil and gas exploration. However, seismic data in the eastern Sichuan Basin has poor lateral continuity of seismic events because of strong interference noises, which makes it difficult to pick horizons. Moreover, low dominant frequency (<25 Hz), low seismic resolution, and weak response characteristics of strong transverse heterogeneity on logging parameters make it challenging for the thin reservoirs prediction. To tackle these issues, in this study, we propose a target-oriented workflow by integrating seismic data processing with interpretation to delineate the thin reservoirs and corresponding hydrocarbon production capacity. In the processing workflow, we first remove the noise interferences using the structure-oriented filtering (SOF), which can improve the effective information of seismic events and also preserve the features of fault structures. Second, we propose a novel method based on spectral shaping and sparse inversion to enhance the seismic resolution. Tests on filed data demonstrate that the effective information and resolution of processed seismic data are significantly enhanced. Then, in the seismic interpretation, fluid mobility and spectral decomposition are first used to delineate the spatial distribution of favorable reservoirs. Furthermore, multi-attribute integrated interpretation involving impedance analysis, reservoir thickness estimation and porosity inversion is used to evaluate the storage capacity and productivity of the thin reservoirs. The estimated impedance, reservoir thickness and porosity show good agreement with well information, demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed method for accurately predicting thin reservoirs in this area. Multi-attribute integrated interpretation revealed that the favorable thin reservoirs are mainly developed from the northeast to the southwest in the study area, which can provide effective guidelines for future production well drilling and distribution delineations of a favorable reservoir in the Eastern Sichuan Basin. • Structure-oriented filtering (SOF) can remove noises and enhance the effective continuities and structural features. • A new resolution enhancement (RE) method improves the seismic resolution significantly and reduces the artifacts. • The target-oriented processing workflow can markedly improve the quality of the seismic data. • Multi-attribute analyses indicating the favorable thin reservoirs is developed for the target zone. Although fossil fluvial travertines have been described, factors controlling their formation are poorly understood because of the paucity of their modern counterparts. To disclose processes affecting their deposition, a modern fluvial travertine system at Bagni San Filippo (Siena, central Italy) was studied here and compared with other cases. The studied travertines occur in a valley with an ephemeral stream, but continuous water influx from hot springs on the hillside makes part of the stream become perennial. Four sub-environments were recognized: slopes, waterfalls, pools, and channels. The first two are mainly composed of laminated crystalline crust-boundstone. In contrast, pools are mainly covered by lime mud and some post-flood travertine-encrusted breccia, while channels commonly display abundant travertine-encrusted breccia. Many erosional features and products were also found and are largely the result of episodic erosion triggered by heavy rainfalls and accompanied floods. The predominant erosional processes might include abrasion and plucking. Based on environment distribution, stream bed morphology, and erosional distinctions, the fluvial system was distinguished into slope-pool-waterfall and channel-pool-waterfall subsystems. Such system differentiation is attributed to the original stream bed difference: wide beds promoted the development of slopes, while narrow beds encouraged travertine erosion and subsequent gravel accumulation during flood events, favoring the formation of channels. The comparison shows that fluvial travertine deposition largely occurs within existing rivers. The relative contribution of spring water to original river water controls the deposit composition (the higher contribution ratios, the more abundant carbonate/travertine facies). Furthermore, erosion might be common and unavoidable because the reported fluvial travertines were all formed in non-arid regions. These findings suggest that fluvial travertine deposition is influenced by topography, hot spring contribution, original river bed geometry, and fluvial erosion, and might aid in the interpretation of ancient fluvial travertine systems. Additionally, downstream fluvial travertine systems might show similar characteristics to fluvial tufas, but their formation is clearly hot spring influenced, indicating the importance of analyzing facies distribution and δ13C-δ18O signatures in fluvial carbonate studies.
