Wendelstein 7-X is the first comprehensively optimized stellarator aiming at good confinement with plasma parameters relevant to a future stellarator power plant. Plasma operation started in 2015 using a limiter configuration. After installing an uncooled magnetic island divertor, extending the energy limit from 4 to 80 MJ, operation continued in 2017. For this phase, the electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) capability was extended to 7 MW, and hydrogen pellet injection was implemented. The enhancements resulted in the highest triple product (6.5 × 1019 keV m−3 s) achieved in a stellarator until now. Plasma conditions [Te(0) ≈ Ti(0) ≈ 3.8 keV, τE > 200 ms] already were in the stellarator reactor-relevant ion-root plasma transport regime. Stable operation above the 2nd harmonic ECRH X-mode cutoff was demonstrated, which is instrumental for achieving high plasma densities in Wendelstein 7-X. Further important developments include the confirmation of low intrinsic error fields, the observation of current-drive induced instabilities, and first fast ion heating and confinement experiments. The efficacy of the magnetic island divertor was instrumental in achieving high performance in Wendelstein 7-X. Symmetrization of the heat loads between the ten divertor modules could be achieved by external resonant magnetic fields. The superconducting stellarator Wendelstein 7-X is currently being commissioned. First plasmas are expected for the second half of 2015. W7-X is designed to overcome the main drawbacks of the stellarator concept and simultaneously demonstrate its intrinsic advantages relative to the tokamak—i.e., steady-state operation without the requirement of current drive or stability control. An elaborate optimization procedure was used to avoid excessive neoclassical transport losses at high plasma temperature, while simultaneously achieving satisfactory equilibrium and stability properties at high $\beta $ in combination with a viable divertor concept. In addition, fast-ion confinement must be consistent with the requirements of alpha-heating in a power plant. Plasma operation of Wendelstein 7-X follows a staged approach following the successive completion of the in-vessel components. The main objective of Wendelstein 7-X is the demonstration of steady-state plasma at fusion relevant plasma parameters. Wendelstein 7-X will address major questions for the extrapolation of the concept to a power plant. These include divertor operation at high densities, plasma fueling at high central temperatures, avoiding impurity accumulation, and an assessment of the effect of neoclassical optimization on turbulent transport and fast-ion confinement. Background.Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of multiple neural networks during the brain's ‘resting state’ could facilitate biomarker development in patients with Huntington's disease (HD) and may provide new insights into the relationship between neural dysfunction and clinical symptoms. To date, however, very few studies have examined the functional integrity of multiple resting state networks (RSNs) in manifest HD, and even less is known about whether concomitant brain atrophy affects neural activity in patients.Method.Using MRI, we investigated brain structure and RSN function in patients with early HD (n = 20) and healthy controls (n = 20). For resting-state fMRI data a group-independent component analysis identified spatiotemporally distinct patterns of motor and prefrontal RSNs of interest. We used voxel-based morphometry to assess regional brain atrophy, and ‘biological parametric mapping’ analyses to investigate the impact of atrophy on neural activity.Results.Compared with controls, patients showed connectivity changes within distinct neural systems including lateral prefrontal, supplementary motor, thalamic, cingulate, temporal and parietal regions. In patients, supplementary motor area and cingulate cortex connectivity indices were associated with measures of motor function, whereas lateral prefrontal connectivity was associated with cognition.Conclusions.This study provides evidence for aberrant connectivity of RSNs associated with motor function and cognition in early manifest HD when controlling for brain atrophy. The objective of Wendelstein 7-X is to demonstrate steady-state operation at β-values of up to 5%, at ion temperatures of several keV and plasma densities of up to 2 × 1020 m-3. The second operational phase foresees a fully steady-state high heat flux (HHF) divertor. Preparations are underway to cope with residual bootstrap currents, either by electron cyclotron current drive or by HHF protection elements. The main steady-state heating system is an electron cyclotron resonance heating facility. Various technical improvements of the gyrotrons have been implemented recently. They enable a reliable operation at the 1 MW power level. Some of the technical issues preparing plasma diagnostics for steady-state operation are exemplified. High-dose chemotherapy in conjunction with auto-SCT is the preferred treatment of relapsed Hodgkin disease and non-Hodgkin lymphoma and newly diagnosed multiple myeloma. Failure to achieve optimal stem cell mobilization results in multiple subsequent attempts, which consumes large amounts of growth factors and potentially requires antibiotics and transfusions. We retrospectively reviewed the natural history of stem cell mobilization attempts at our institution from 2001 to 2007 to determine the frequency of suboptimal mobilization in patients with hematologic malignancy undergoing autologous transplant and analyzed the subsequent resource utilization in patients with initially failed attempts. Of 1775 patients undergoing mobilization during the study period, stem cell collection (defined by the number of CD34+ cells/kg) was ‘optimal’ (5 × 106) in 53%, ‘low’ (2–5 × 106) in 25%, ‘poor’ (<2 × 106) in 10%, and ‘failed’ (<10 CD34+ cells/μl) in 12%. In the 47% of collections that were less than optimal, increased resource consumption included increased use of growth factors and antibiotics, subsequent chemotherapy mobilization, increased transfusional support, more apheresis procedures, and more frequent hospitalization. Background and purpose: Functional neuroimaging studies have suggested a dysfunction of prefrontal regions in clinically pre-symptomatic individuals with the Huntington’s disease (HD) gene mutation (pre-HD) during cognitive processing. The objective of this study was to test the impact of cognitive demand on prefrontal connectivity in pre-HD individuals. Methods: Sixteen healthy controls and sixteen pre-HD subjects were studied using functional MRI and a verbal working memory task with increasing cognitive load. Load-dependent functional connectivity of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) was investigated by means of psychophysiological interactions. Results: In pre-HD subjects, aberrant functional connectivity of the left DLPFC was found at high working memory load levels only. Compared with healthy controls, pre-HD individuals exhibited lower connectivity strength in the left putamen, the right anterior cingulate and the left medial prefrontal cortex. Pre-HD individuals close to the onset of motor symptoms additionally exhibited lower connectivity strength in the right putamen and the left superior frontal cortex. The connectivity strength in the left putamen was associated with several clinical measures including CAG repeat length, Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale motor score and predicted years to manifest symptom onset. Two novel web apps for W7-X are introduced: Profile Cooker and Power House. They are designed to streamline the workflow of profile fitting and power balance analysis while offering a graphical user interface that works in any common browser. This allows us to compile a comprehensive database of experimental power balance results. All fitting functions available in Profile Cooker are presented and compared on the basis of example profiles. The power balance equation assumed in Power House is established and its individual terms are discussed. The main focus of the power balance analysis is on the turbulent transport coefficients. A model for quick calculation of neutral beam power deposition based on experimental profiles is presented. Neoclassical root transition poses an issue for power balance analysis due to the uncertainty of the radial electric field. A global, neoclassical simulation with the code EUTERPE is performed for a set of experimental profiles to gain an understanding of the neoclassical root transition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Larger fusion experiments require long beam paths for laser diagnostics, which requires mechanical stability and measures to deal with remaining alignment variations. At the same time, due to technical and organizational boundary conditions, calibrations become challenging. The current mid-sized experiments face the same issues, yet on a smaller scale, which makes them ideal testing environments for novel calibration methods, since a comparison with the established best practices is still possible. At the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X, the calibration and operation of the Thomson scattering diagnostic is hampered by beam displacements, coating of windows during operation, and access restrictions while the superconducting coils are active. New calibration techniques were developed to improve the profile quality and reduce calibration time. While positional variations of the laser beam have to be minimized, the remaining displacements can be accounted for during the absolute calibration. An in situ spectral calibration has been developed based on Rayleigh scattering, which calibrates the whole diagnostic, including observation windows. In addition, a less accurate but faster method has been developed, which utilizes stray-light of a tunable OPO to perform spectral calibration within minutes and does not require torus hall access. Finally, a workflow has been established to consider finite linewidths of the calibration source in the spectral calibration. While these methods will be used at W7-X to complement existing calibration techniques, they may also solve some of the aforementioned issues expected for even larger and nuclear experiments, where access restrictions are stringent and calibration becomes even more demanding. By employing Bayesian inference techniques, the full electron density profile from the plasma core to the edge of Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is inferred solely from neutral hydrogen beam and halo Balmer- α (H α) emission data. The halo is a cloud of neutrals forming in the vicinity of the injected neutral beam due to multiple charge exchange reactions. W7-X is equipped with several neutral hydrogen beam heating sources and an H α spectroscopy system that views these sources from different angles and penetration depths in the plasma. As the beam and halo emission form complex spectra for each spatial point that are non-linearly dependent on the plasma density profile and other parameters, a complete model from the neutral beam injection and halo formation through to the spectroscopic measurements is required. The model is used here to infer electron density profiles for a range of common W7-X plasma scenarios. The inferred profiles show good agreement with profiles determined by the Thomson scattering and interferometry diagnostics across a broad range of absolute densities without any changes to the input or fitting parameters. The time evolution of the density profile in a discharge with continuous core density peaking is successfully reconstructed, demonstrating sufficient spatial resolution to infer strongly shaped profiles. Background: Depression is the most common mental disorder in older adults and is influenced by age-related processes. Frailty is a well-established clinical expression of ageing that implies a state of increased vulnerability to stressor events as well as increased risks of disability, hospitalization and death. Neurobiological findings will disentangle the comorbidity of frailty and depression and may inform future management of depression in old age. Objective: This narrative review provides an overview of the comorbidity of late-life depression and frailty, with a focus on neuroscientific findings that are organized within the research domain criteria (RDoC) framework. Results: More than one third of old people with depression are affected by frailty, which results in more chronic depression and in poorer efficacy and tolerability of antidepressant medication. Depression and frailty share motivational and psychomotor characteristics, particularly apathy, decreased physical activity and fatigue. In patients with frailty, altered activity of the supplementary motor cortex is associated with motor performance deficits. Patients with late-life depression and apathy are characterized by abnormal structure and altered functional connectivity of the reward network and the salience network, along with altered functional connectivity of these networks with premotor brain areas. Conclusion: Identifying frailty in older adults with depression is relevant for prognostic assessment and treatment. This paper presents the development and testing of the prototype Imaging Motional Stark-Effect (IMSE) diagnostic, designed for ASDEX upgrade. A detailed description of the core hardware, theory of operation, and application to complex MSE spectra are presented and analytical evaluation methods suitable for the required accuracy are developed. The diagnostic is tested with a MSE-like polarised spectrum to assess the accuracy of different modulation modes suggested in previous works. Each is found to have small systematic errors due to non-ideal effects of the components, which must be carefully examined. In particular, the effect of intrinsic contrast that results from imperfect parallelism of the birefringent plates is found to have a strong effect. Methods to mitigate and correct for this are discussed. With the necessary corrections and calibrations, the accuracy of polarisation orientation is shown to be within ±0.2°. The effect of finite ellipticity is examined and the possibility to measure this to an accuracy of ±2.0° is demonstrated. The system is shown to be insensitive to broadband polarised background light, temperature variations, and critically to variations in the details of the MSE spectrum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim Favourable outcomes for health-related quality of life (HRQL) have been reported in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) after restorative proctocolectomy and ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (RPC). However, less is known about patients' subjective experience and adjustment to postoperative impairment. Using a multidimensional psychometric assessment, we investigated patient-reported HRQL to determine the impact of the patient's subjective experience together with medical, functional and psychosocial factors on HRQL. Method In this cross-sectional study, 116 FAP patients who had undergone RPC on average 8 years earlier completed standardized and study-specific questionnaires and participated in a personal interview. The impact of medical, functional and psychosocial factors on patients' HRQL was determined by regression analyses. Results When using a generic psychometric measure, FAP patients' overall HRQL was comparable with that of the general population. Impaired HRQL, however, was found in patients reporting poor pouch function in contrast to those reporting good or moderate functional outcome. Findings from a personalized interview also suggested that a good functional result does not necessarily translate into good HRQL. Personal resources predicted patients' physical and psychological well-being, whereas little variance of HRQL was explained by medical factors and function. Conclusion Patients' HRQL is, to a substantial degree, the result of adjustment to the adverse impact of RPC. By using personal resources the majority of patients may achieve satisfactory HRQL levels even when bowel function is impaired. A multidimensional assessment that comprises medical, functional and psychosocial aspects is required to ascertain an adequate evaluation of FAP patients after RPC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dispersion interferometry (DI) is being employed on an increasing number of fusion experiments to measure the plasma density with a minimal sensitivity to vibrations. DIs employed in high-density experiments use phase modulation techniques up to several hundred kilohertz to enable quadrature detection and to be unaffected by variations of the signal amplitude. However, the evaluation of the temporal interferogram can be a significant source for phase errors and does not have an established processing method. There are two non-approximation-based methods currently in use: one using the ratio of amplitudes in the signal's Fourier spectrum and the other using its sectioned integration. Previously, the methods could not be used simultaneously since they differ in their respective calibration point. In this paper, we present a technique to use both phase evaluation methods simultaneously using quadrature correction methods. A comparison of their strengths and weaknesses is presented based on identical measurements indicating one to be more reliable in a more static measurement scenario, while the other excels in highly dynamic ones. Several comparative experiments are presented, which identify a significant error source in the phase measurement induced by polarization rotation. Since the same effect may be induced by Faraday rotation, the results may have direct consequence on the design of the ITER dispersion interferometer/polarimeter as well as the European DEMO's interferometer concept. We present a framework for training artificial neural networks (ANNs) as surrogate Bayesian models for the inference of plasma parameters from diagnostic data collected at nuclear fusion experiments, with the purpose of providing a fast approximation of conventional Bayesian inference. Because of the complexity of the models involved, conventional Bayesian inference can require tens of minutes for analyzing one single measurement, while hundreds of thousands can be collected during a single plasma discharge. The ANN surrogates can reduce the analysis time down to tens/hundreds of microseconds per single measurement. The core idea is to generate the training data by sampling them from the joint probability distribution of the parameters and observations of the original Bayesian model. The network can be trained to learn the reconstruction of plasma parameters from observations and the model joint probability distribution from plasma parameters and observations. Previous work has validated the application of such a framework to the former case at the Wendelstein 7-X and Joint European Torus experiments. Here, we first give a description of the general methodological principles allowing us to generate the training data, and then we show an example application of the reconstruction of the joint probability distribution of an effective ion charge Zeff-bremsstrahlung model from data collected at the latest W7-X experimental campaign. One key feature of such an approach is that the network is trained exclusively on data generated with the Bayesian model, requiring no experimental data. This allows us to replicate the training scheme and generate fast, surrogate ANNs for any validated Bayesian diagnostic model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fluctuations of electron cyclotron emission (ECE) signals are analyzed for differently heated Wendelstein 7-X plasmas. The fluctuations appear to travel predominantly on flux surfaces and are used as 'tracers' in multivariate time series. Different statistical techniques are assessed to reveal the coupling and information entropy-based coupling analysis are conducted. All these techniques provide evidence that the fluctuation analysis allows one to check the consistency of magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) equilibrium calculations. Expanding the suite of techniques applied in fusion data analysis, partial mutual information (PMI) analysis is introduced. PMI generalizes traditional partial correlation (Frenzel and Pompe Phys. Rev. Lett. 99 204101) and also Schreiber's transfer entropy (Schreiber 2000 Phys. Rev. Lett. 85 461). The main additional capability of PMI is to allow one to discount for specific spurious data. Since PMI analysis allows one to study the effect of common drivers, the influence of the electron cyclotron resonance heating on the mutual dependencies of simultaneous ECE measurements was assessed. Additionally, MHD mode activity was found to be coupled in a limited volume in the plasma core for different plasmas. In this paper, the plasma volume averaged impurity confinement of selected charge states and impurity species has been characterized for the Stellarator Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), covering a wide range of atomic charges (Z = 12–44) and atomic masses (M = 28–184). A comparison of the experimental findings to theoretical neoclassical and turbulent transport expectations suggests, aside from/in addition to the neoclassical transport, an additional significant anomalous transport mechanism, which is not inconsistent with the predictions of a turbulence dominated impurity transport and is in agreement with the experimental results from recent transport studies based on the direct measurements of impurity diffusion profiles, performed at W7-X. A neural network (NN) has been trained on the inference of the edge electron density profiles from measurements of the JET lithium beam emission spectroscopy (Li-BES) diagnostic. The novelty of the approach resides in the fact that the network has been trained to be a fast surrogate model of an existing Bayesian model of the diagnostic implemented within the Minerva framework. Previous work showed the very first application of this method to an x-ray imaging diagnostic at the W7-X experiment, and it was argued that the method was general enough that it may be applied to different physics systems. Here, we try to show that the claim made there is valid. What makes the approach general and versatile is the common definition of different models within the same framework. The network is tested on data measured during several different pulses and the predictions compared to the results obtained with the full model Bayesian inference. The NN analysis only requires tens of microseconds on a GPU compared to the tens of minutes long full inference. Finally, in relation to what was presented in the previous work, we demonstrate an improvement in the method of calculation of the network uncertainties, achieved by using a state-of-the-art deep learning technique based on a variational inference interpretation of the network training. The advantage of this calculation resides in the fact that it relies on fewer assumptions, and no extra computation time is required besides the conventional network evaluation time. Hepatic veno-occlusive disease (HVOD) after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) results in considerable morbidity and mortality. No therapy has been shown to be uniformly effective. Several studies have highlighted the pivotal role of endothelial injury and the hemostatic system in the pathogenesis of HVOD. Charcoal hemofiltration has been shown to be effective for adsorbing circulating bilirubin and other protein-bound toxins and for supporting patients in hepatic failure. We describe two adult patients with severe, biopsy-proven HVOD (peak bilirubin levels, more than 50 mg/dl in both cases) after HSCT who were successfully treated with charcoal hemofiltration after other treatments failed (including defibrotide in one patient). Both patients were heavily treated before they underwent either autologous (melphalan and total body irradiation conditioning) or allogeneic (cyclophosphamide and total body irradiation conditioning) HSCT. At the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, the X-ray imaging crystal spectrometer provides line integrated measurements of ion and electron temperatures, plasma flows, as well as impurity densities from a spectroscopic analysis of tracer impurity radiation. In order to infer the actual profiles from line integrated data, a forward modeling approach has been developed within the Minerva Bayesian analysis framework. In this framework, the inversion is realized on the basis of a complete forward model of the diagnostic, including error propagation and utilizing Gaussian processes for generation and inference of arbitrary shaped plasma parameter profiles. For modeling of line integrated data as measured by the detector, the installation geometry of the spectrometer, imaging properties of the crystal, and Gaussian detection noise are considered. The inversion of line integrated data is achieved using the maximum posterior method for plasma parameter profile inference and a Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling of the posterior distribution for calculating uncertainties of the inference process. The inversion method shows a correct and reliable inference of temperature and impurity density profiles from synthesized data within the estimated uncertainties along the whole plasma radius. The application to measured data yields a good match of derived electron temperature profiles to data of the Thomson scattering diagnostic for central electron temperatures between 2 and 5 keV using argon impurities. The treatment of schizophrenic psychoses with antipsychotic drugs (AP) is often associated with an increased risk of delayed occurrence of antipsychotic-associated movement disorders. Persistence and chronicity of such symptoms are very frequent. The risk of developing tardive dyskinesia (TD) is associated with the pharmacological effect profile of a particular AP, with treatment duration and age. This systematic review article summarizes the current study situation on prevalence, risk factors, prevention and treatment options and instruments for early prediction of TD in schizophrenic psychoses. The current data situation on treatment strategies for TD is very heterogeneous. For the treatment of TD there is preliminary evidence for reduction or discontinuation of the AP, switching to clozapine, administration of benzodiazepines (clonazepam) and treatment with vesicular monoamine transporter (VMAT2) inhibitors, ginkgo biloba, amantadine or vitamin E. Although TD can be precisely diagnosed it cannot always be effectively treated. Early detection and early treatment of TD can have a favorable influence on the prognosis and the clinical outcome. A new method for in situ spectral calibration of Thomson scattering diagnostics is proposed. The idea of the method is to apply a wavelength tunable optical parametric oscillator for measurements of Rayleigh scattering at different wavelengths, from which relative sensitivities can be calculated. This extends the usual approach where Rayleigh scattering is used only at a single wavelength for the absolute calibration and spectral sensitivities are obtained separately. With the new approach, the full diagnostic setup is spectrally calibrated at once. Such a calibration can be repeated at regular intervals during an experimental campaign since it does not require a break of the vacuum. In this paper, the Rayleigh scattering calibration is tested in a laboratory setup with a sample Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) polychromator. It is shown that relative sensitivities of spectral channels can be recovered with a sufficient resolution even under conditions of significant stray light. The stray light is overcome by measuring the linear dependence of the scattered signal on the gas pressure. A Collective Thomson Scattering (CTS) diagnostic is installed at Wendelstein 7-X for ion temperature measurements in the plasma core. The diagnostic utilizes 140 GHz gyrotrons usually used for electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) as a source of probing radiation. The CTS diagnostic uses a quasi-optical transmission line covering a distance of over 40 m. The transmission line is shared between the ECRH system and the CTS diagnostic. Akute antipsychotikainduzierte Bewegungsstörungen (AIB) sind klinisch relevant, subjektiv häufig ausgesprochen beeinträchtigend und für die Therapieadhärenz in der Langzeitbehandlung schizophrener Psychosen potenziell nachteilig. Diese Übersichtsarbeit fasst die aktuellen Studien zu Prävalenz, Risikofaktoren, Präventions- und Therapiemöglichkeiten sowie zur Voraussage akuter AIB bei schizophrenen Psychosen zusammen. Die aktuelle Evidenz und therapeutischen Empfehlungen gliedern sich in Abschnitte über akute Dystonien, Akathisie und Parkinsonismus. Für die Behandlung akuter Dystonien haben sich Trihexyphenidyl und Biperiden als hilfreich erwiesen. Zur Behandlung von Akathisie konnte die Wirksamkeit von lipophilen β‑Rezeptor-Blockern (Propranolol und Pindolol), Clonidin, Benzodiazepinen, Mianserin, Mirtazapin und Trazadon nachgewiesen werden. Die Therapie des antipsychotikainduzierten Parkinsonismus besteht in der Reduktion oder Umstellung des Antipsychotikums auf ein Präparat mit geringerer Affinität zum Dopamin-D2-Rezeptor oder in der regelmäßigen Gabe von Amantadin oder Anticholinergika. Zusammenfassend können akute AIB zwar präzise diagnostiziert, jedoch nicht immer effektiv und nachhaltig behandelt werden. Pharmakotherapie bei schizophrenen Psychosen kann in seltenen Fällen mit folgenschweren antipsychotikaassoziierten Bewegungsstörungen einhergehen. Die zwei schwerwiegendsten Komplikationen der antipsychotischen Behandlung sind „antipsychotikaassoziierte katatone Symptome" (AKS) und das „maligne neuroleptische Syndrom" (MNS). Beide Konstellationen erfordern ein schnelles ärztliches Handeln, allerdings kann die differenzialdiagnostische Abgrenzung eine Herausforderung sein. Therapeutisch sollte bei AKS (hier konzipiert als eine spezifische Unterform katatoner Symptome) ein Versuch mit Benzodiazepinen erfolgen; auch Memantine könnte hilfreich sein. In schweren pharmakorefraktären Fällen kann eine Elektrokonvulsionstherapie (EKT) indiziert sein. Das MNS stellt eine lebensbedrohliche Konstellation dar, die häufig intensivmedizinisch behandelt werden muss. Die medikamentöse Behandlung mit Benzodiazepinen, Bromocriptin, Amantadin, Dantrolen und/oder EKT hat sich als effektiv erwiesen. Nicht zuletzt fasst diese Übersichtsarbeit auch die vorliegende Literatur zur Therapie genuiner katatoner Symptome zusammen. Zusammenfassend kann festgehalten werden, dass diese klinischen Syndrome schnellstmöglich erkannt und behandelt werden müssen. We use numerical simulations to characterize the performance of a clustering-based method to calibrate photometric redshift biases. In particular, we cross-correlate the weak lensing source galaxies from the Dark Energy Survey Year 1 sample with redMaGiC galaxies (luminous red galaxies with secure photometric redshifts) to estimate the redshift distribution of the former sample. The recovered redshift distributions are used to calibrate the photometric redshift bias of standard photo-z methods applied to the same source galaxy sample. We apply the method to two photo-z codes run in our simulated data: Bayesian Photometric Redshift and Directional Neighbourhood Fitting. We characterize the systematic uncertainties of our calibration procedure, and find that these systematic uncertainties dominate our error budget. The dominant systematics are due to our assumption of unevolving bias and clustering across each redshift bin, and to differences between the shapes of the redshift distributions derived by clustering versus photo-zs. The systematic uncertainty in the mean redshift bias of the source galaxy sample is Δz ≲ 0.02, though the precise value depends on the redshift bin under consideration. Besides positive and negative symptoms, motor abnormalities have been increasingly recognized as central symptoms of schizophrenia. Recent investigations of antipsychotic-naive first-episode patients with schizophrenia found significantly higher rates of genuine motor abnormalities (GMA) when compared to healthy individuals. The first part of this article introduces the historical and clinical background of GMA in schizophrenia. In the second part the relevance of scientific research and clinical implication of GMA in schizophrenia are discussed. Finally, this article aims at presenting a conceptual framework and a reference system involving both genuine and drug-induced motor abnormalities. The future clinical implications of GMA research are presented and multimodal and transdiagnostic studies are advocated. Despite a growing body of evidence on motor dysfunction in schizophrenia spectrum disorders, the neuronal correlates of genuine motor abnormalities (GMA) are not fully elucidated at present. Moreover, the clinical relevance of a potential 'motor intermediate phenotype' remains controversial. This systematic review aims at characterizing a 'motor intermediate phenotype' in schizophrenia spectrum disorders. The second goal of this systematic review is to discuss GMA-associated brain alterations as potential biomarkers of psychosis risk syndrome and manifest motor symptoms against the background of current neuroimaging evidence. The detailed clinical assessment of GMA in the context of multimodal imaging could, in the future promote the early recognition of psychotic disorders and the initiation of disorder-oriented and individualized treatment. Taken as a whole the data provide initial evidence that motor dysfunction in schizophrenic spectrum disorders must be considered dimensionally. The predictive value of neurobiological results with respect to the transition to a life-threatening catatonia or the development of chronic dyskinesia, cannot currently be conclusively assessed. This paper describes the design of the Thomson scattering system at the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator. For the first operation campaign we installed a 10 spatial channel system to cover a radial half profile of the plasma cross section. The start-up system is based on one Nd:YAG laser with 10 Hz repetition frequency, one observation optics, five fiber bundles with one delay line each, and five interference filter polychromators with five spectral channels and silicon avalanche diodes as detectors. High dynamic range analog to digital converters with 14 bit, 1 GS/s are used to digitize the signals. The spectral calibration of the system was done using a pulsed super continuum laser together with a monochromator. For density calibration we used Raman scattering in nitrogen gas. Peaked temperature profiles and flat density profiles are observed in helium and hydrogen discharges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BackgroundMajor depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by alterations in brain function that are identifiable also during the brain's ‘resting state’. One functional network that is disrupted in this disorder is the default mode network (DMN), a set of large-scale connected brain regions that oscillate with low-frequency fluctuations and are more active during rest relative to a goal-directed task. Recent studies support the idea that the DMN is not a unitary system, but rather is composed of smaller and distinct functional subsystems that interact with each other. The functional relevance of these subsystems in depression, however, is unclear.MethodHere, we investigated the functional connectivity of distinct DMN subsystems and their interplay in depression using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging.ResultsWe show that patients with MDD exhibit increased within-network connectivity in posterior, ventral and core DMN subsystems along with reduced interplay from the anterior to the ventral DMN subsystems.ConclusionsThese data suggest that MDD is characterized by alterations of subsystems within the DMN as well as of their interactions. BackgroundDepressive symptoms are prominent psychopathological features of Huntington's disease (HD), making a negative impact on social functioning and well-being.MethodWe compared the frequencies of a history of depression, previous suicide attempts and current subthreshold depression between 61 early-stage HD participants and 40 matched controls. The HD group was then split based on the overall HD group's median Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-depression score into a group of 30 non-depressed participants (mean 0.8, s.d. = 0.7) and a group of 31 participants with subthreshold depressive symptoms (mean 7.3, s.d. = 3.5) to explore the neuroanatomy underlying subthreshold depressive symptoms in HD using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI).ResultsFrequencies of history of depression, previous suicide attempts or current subthreshold depressive symptoms were higher in HD than in controls. The severity of current depressive symptoms was also higher in HD, but not associated with the severity of HD motor signs or disease burden. Compared with the non-depressed HD group DTI revealed lower fractional anisotropy (FA) values in the frontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, insula and cerebellum of the HD group with subthreshold depressive symptoms. In contrast, VBM measures were similar in both HD groups. A history of depression, the severity of HD motor signs or disease burden did not correlate with FA values of these regions.ConclusionsCurrent subthreshold depressive symptoms in early HD are associated with microstructural changes – without concomitant brain volume loss – in brain regions known to be involved in major depressive disorder, but not those typically associated with HD pathology. SCT is important in the management of multiple myeloma. In the United States, the standard of care is administration of growth factors to accelerate neutrophil recovery after SCT. The need for growth factors after transplant has not been investigated recently. We analyzed a cohort of 166 patients at our institution who underwent autologous transplant for multiple myeloma without receiving growth factors after transplant and compared them with 498 patients who received standard filgrastim beginning on posttransplant day 5. A neutrophil count of 500/μL was achieved in a median of 12.5 days in patients receiving growth factor, compared with 13.5 days in those not receiving growth factor (P<0.001). Platelet engraftment was identical (median, 14.5 days; P=0.12) in both groups, despite a lower median number of CD34+ cells infused in patients who did not receive growth factors. Incidence of nonstaphylococcal bacteremia was identical in both groups. The median hospital stay was 3.5 days shorter in the group not receiving growth factor. This paper presents an overview of results from the Imaging Motional Stark Effect (IMSE) diagnostic obtained during its first measurement campaign at ASDEX Upgrade since installation as a permanent diagnostic. A brief overview of the IMSE technique is given, followed by measurements of a standard H-mode discharge, which are compared to equilibrium reconstructions showing good agreement where expected. The development of special discharges for the calibration of pitch angle is reported and safety factor profile changes during sawteeth crashes are shown, which can be resolved to a few percent due to the high sensitivity at good time resolution of the new IMSE system. Background. In patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), functional neuroimaging studies have reported an increased activation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) during executive performance and working memory (WM) processing, and also an increased activation of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) during baseline conditions. However, the functional coupling of these cortical networks during WM processing is less clear. Method. In this study, we used a verbal WM paradigm, event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and multivariate statistical techniques to explore patterns of functional coupling of temporally dissociable dorsolateral prefrontal and cingulate networks. By means of independent component analyses (ICAs), two components of interest were identified that showed either a positive or a negative temporal correlation with the delay period of the cognitive activation task in both healthy controls and MDD patients. Results. In a prefronto-parietal network, a decreased functional connectivity pattern was identified in depressed patients comprising inferior parietal, superior prefrontal and frontopolar regions. Within this cortical network, MDD patients additionally revealed a pattern of increased functional connectivity in the left DLPFC and the cerebellum compared to healthy controls. In a second, temporally anti-correlated network, healthy controls exhibited higher connectivity in the ACC, the ventrolateral and the superior prefrontal cortex compared to MDD patients. Conclusions. These results complement and expand previous functional neuroimaging findings by demonstrating a dysconnectivity of dissociable prefrontal and cingulate regions in MDD patients. A disturbance of these dynamic networks is characterized by a simultaneously increased connectivity of the DLPFC during task-induced activation and increased connectivity of the ACC during task-induced deactivation. The article presents a detailed investigation of the fast disruption mitigation valve developed at FZJ Juelich. The essence of this study is the novel direct observation of the piston motion by means of a fast framing camera. The piston stroke and the injection duration are shown to strongly depend on the operational pressure and the used gas. The same is true for the valve throughput. The analysis revealing the leading contribution of the injection duration in this modification is given. The knowledge of the injection duration is also used to reconstruct the characteristic pressure decay rates and the gas outflow rates. The means to increase the gas outflow are discussed. The main found valve characteristics are: (1) valve reaction time, i.e., the delay between the application of the trigger signal and the achievement of reliably observable opening 0.5 mm, is about 0.3 ms; (2) the maximum achieved throughput is 7.5 bar l for argon and 9.5 bar l for helium; (3) the maximum delivery rates are 500 bar l s-1 for Ar and 1500 bar l s-1 for He. Penetration processes of rotating helical magnetic perturbation field into tokamak plasmas have been investigated by the dynamic ergodic divertor (DED) in TEXTOR. Experimental observations of the field penetration and field amplification are performed and the data are interpreted by theoretical analyses based on a linearized two-fluid plasma model. It is observed that the growth of the forced magnetic reconnection by the rotating DED-field is accompanied by a change in the plasma fluid rotation. The theoretical model is also applied to the DED experiment in the small tokamak device HYBTOK-II. It is confirmed that the theoretical analyses can explain the observed radial profiles of the DED-field in the plasma by inserting small magnetic pick-up coils in HYBTOK-II. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
