This article examines the video game Kingdom Hearts and its classification as a Japanese role-playing game (JRPG) due to its collaboration with the Walt Disney Company. It explores the game's Japanese identity and the role of race in its production and the global video game industry. The article also discusses the erasure of minority labor in the industry and the importance of studying JRPGs to understand the racial politics of the industry. It analyzes the game's creator, Tetsuya Nomura, from the perspective of auteur theory and contrasts his auteurship with other game developers. The tensions between Disney and Square Enix in the development of Kingdom Hearts are explored, as well as the racialized labor of the creative team.
