ABSTRACT Introduction: A case series of acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) is described that focuses on the clinical course of the disease with regard to neurological manifestations of the peripheral nervous system. Methods: Eight patients were diagnosed with AIP on the basis of characteristic clinical findings, erythrocyte porphobilinogendeaminase activity, neuropathic patterns, serial changes in nerve conduction studies (NCS), and temporal relationship of central nervous system involvement. Results: Six patients diagnosed with AIP <2 months after symptom onset had neuropathy that was predominantly upper extremity, motor, and proximal. NCS recovery rates were slower in the lower than the upper limbs. Two patients diagnosed >2 months after symptom onset had distal sensorimotor polyneuropathy. Conclusions: The findings from this case series suggest that the peripheral nerves may be differentially and selectively involved in different diagnostic stages of porphyric neuropathy. Wood-rotting fungi lead to great economic losses of lignocellulosic materials. The influence of extractives on the decay resistance of Michelia formosana wood and the antifungal activities of heartwood extract and its constituent against wood-rotting fungi were evaluated. Results revealed that extractives had a strong influence on the decay resistance of M. formosana heartwood. The unextracted heartwood block was resistant to fungi, while the extracted heartwood block was not. Antifungal activities of ethanolic extract from heartwood were assessed; results revealed that the ethanolic extract possessed good antifungal activity against wood-rotting fungi. The ethanolic extract was further separated into four fractions including n-hexane-soluble fraction, ethyl acetate-soluble fraction, n-butanol-soluble fraction, and water-soluble fraction. Among these fractions, the n-hexane-soluble fraction exhibited the best antifungal ability. An alkaloid, liriodenine, was isolated from the active n-hexane-soluble fraction. IC values of liriodenine against the white-rot fungi Lenzites betulina and Trametes versicolor were 0.76 and 3.50 μg/mL, respectively. IC values of liriodenine against the brown-rot fungi Laetiporus sulphureus, Gloeophyllum trabeum, and Fomitopsis pinicola were all lower than 2.0 μg/mL. Results indicated that liriodenine exhibited a broad spectrum of antifungal activity and great potential to develop as an environmentally benign fungicide for the preservation of lignocellulosic materials. Indigenous cinnamon (Cinnamomum osmophloeum) is an endemic tree in Taiwan. The leaf essential oil is rich in trans-cinnamaldehyde, and its excellent antifungal activity has been reported. Since trans-cinnamaldehyde is a volatile compound, it is here evaluated for whether it is more effective via fumigant action. This study illustrates the antifungal action of trans-cinnamaldehyde against wood-decay fungi. Two ways that trans-cinnamaldehyde inhibits the growth of fungi, namely direct contact and fumigation, were examined using the agar dilution method (AD) and the inverted paper disc method (IPD). In addition, the amount of trans-cinnamaldehyde vapor in the headspace of the Petri dish was quantified using solid-phase microextraction and GC–MS. Antifungal results showed that the antifungal indices observed in the IPD method were clearly higher than those in the AD method, indicating that trans-cinnamaldehyde vapor had stronger antifungal activity. Results from the quantitative analysis also revealed that the amounts of trans-cinnamaldehyde vapor measured by the IPD method were significantly greater than those by the AD method. Accordingly, with higher amount of trans-cinnamaldehyde evaporated, stronger antifungal activity was observed. Abstract: This study shows the photo-stabilizing effect of extractives on wood. XPS and FTIR techniques were used to analyze the variations in chemical characteristics on the surfaces of non-extracted and extracted Acacia confusa heartwood after lightfastness test. XPS survey analyses reveal that non-extracted heartwood exhibits a higher O/C ratio than the extracted wood. Furthermore, results from the detailed analysis of C1s indicated that the photo-oxidative derivatives increased in both extracted and non-extracted specimens after lightfastness test. On extracted wood, the derivatives are mainly derived from lignin, whereas extractives are the major component responsible for the generation of derivatives on non-extracted wood surface. After leaching test of UV-irradiated specimens, it was noted that the degradation products were readily removed by water. More water-soluble derivatives were leached out from the extracted wood, although higher lignin content was observed on the non-extracted wood surface. Abstract: Wood is susceptible to photodegradation when exposed to light. In addition to three main components of wood, the influence of extractives on photodegradation is not fully understood. This study examines the role of wood extractives in photodegradation process, and so the variations in the surface properties of non-extracted and extracted Cryptomeria japonica and Acacia confusa heartwood were examined after exposure to ultraviolet light. FTIR and UV–visible techniques were used to analyze the variations in chemical characteristics on the wood surfaces after irradiation. Following the lightfastness test, the contents of quinonoids and carbonyl groups derived from the lignin increased. However, the wood surface deteriorated less when the extractives existed. In conclusion, extractives play an essential role in the photodegradation of wood, and the rate of wood degradation was lessened by the presence of extractives. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Resistance to conventional fungicides causes the poor disease control of agriculture. Natural products from plants have great potential as novel fungicide sources for controlling pathogenic fungi. In this study antipathogenic activity of the leaf essential oil and its constituents from Calocedrus macrolepis var. formosana Florin were evaluated in vitro against six plant pathogenic fungi. Chemical analysis of leaf oil by GC/MS allowed identification of α-pinene (44.2%), limonene (21.6%), β-myrcene (8.9%), β-caryophyllene (8.2%), caryophyllene oxide (2.4%), α-cadinol (1.6%), β-pinene (1.2%), and T-muurolol (1.1%) as main components. Sesquiterpenoid components of the oil were more effective than monoterpenoid components of the oil. In particular, T-muurolol and α-cadinol strongly inhibited the growth of Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium oxysporum, with the IC50 values<50μgml−1. These compounds also efficiently inhibited the mycelial growths of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, P. funerea, Ganoderma australe and F. solani. These results showed that T-muurolol and α-cadinol possess antifungal activities against a broad spectrum of tested plant pathogenic fungi and could be used as potential antifungal agents for the control of fungal diseases in plants. Abstract: In this study, the anti-termitic activities of 11 essential oils from three species of coniferous tree against Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki were investigated using direct contact application. Results demonstrated that at the dosage of 10mg/g, the heartwood and sapwood essential oils of Calocedrus macrolepis var. formosana and Cryptomeria japonica and the leaf essential oil of Chamaecyparis obtusa var. formosana had 100% mortality after 5d of test. Among the tested essential oils, the heartwood essential oil of C. macrolepis var. formosana killed all termites after 1d of test, with an LC50 value of 2.6mg/g, exhibiting the strongest termiticidal property. The termiticidal effect of heartwood essential oil was due to its toxicity and its repellent action. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: Acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) is an inherited disorder of heme biosynthesis, the clinical manifestations of which are incompletely understood. In this report, we describe 12 cases of AIP, focusing on the neurological manifestations. Methods: Twelve patients were diagnosed with AIP on the basis of characteristic clinical findings, erythrocyte porphobilinogen deaminase (PBGD) activity, and molecular genetics. Central and peripheral nervous system manifestations were noted, and electrophysiological and radiological studies performed. Potential precipitating factors were recorded. Results: Eleven PBGD gene mutations were identified in 12 patients. Nine patients experienced neurological symptoms involving the central nervous system (consciousness disturbance, n = 8; convulsion/seizure, n = 4; behavior change, n = 1), while 7 patients experienced peripheral neuropathies (motor paresis, n = 7; impairment of bulbar or respiratory function, n = 4). The electrophysiological and electroencephalographic findings were consistent with the neurological symptoms of AIP. Urinary PBG and δ-aminolevulinic acid levels were elevated in all patients. PBGD enzyme activity levels were below normal in all patients. Eight patients had documented exposure to porphyrogenic agents. Conclusions: Our detailed description of a relatively large number of cases of AIP may help clinicians to recognize this often difficult-to-diagnose disorder. Copyright © 2011 S.
