A synthetic strategy promising the establishment of a new star-shaped and linear polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) family with distinct molecular topologies has been developed. The Sonogashira reaction between the iodide derivatives 2a-e and phenylacetylene catalyzed with Pd(0) affords 3a-e in high yields. The Diels-Alder and decarbonylation reactions between 3a-e and tetraphenylcyclophentadiene following the oxidation by FeCl3 produce the star-shaped and linear PAHs 5a-e containing a five-membered ring. The structural analysis and the optical properties of all new compounds are performed by a combination of MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, UV-vis, and fluorescence spectrometry. The electronic and photophysical properties are studied by orthogonal comparisons of the absorption and fluorescence spectra in THF solutions, which not only give insight into the interactions among aromatic submoieties in each molecule and the effects of meta-conjugation and para-conjugation on electronic delocalization, but also indicate effective conjugation length variations from oligophenylacetylenes 3a-e to oligophenylene dendrimers 4a-e and PAHs 5a-e. This paper reports the facile synthetic strategy of a series of novel π-conjugated dendrimers (G0 and G1) based on 10,15-dihydro-5H-diindeno[1,2-a;1',2'-c]fluorene (truxene) in which the benzene cores are generated "in-situ" from acetyl aromatics by the acid-promoted cyclotrimerizations. The unique NMR behaviors, physical properties, and electroluminescence device applications are also presented. Besides the purity, the structure, and the confirmation of the successful formation and isolation of desired compounds by clear assignments of every molecule by ¹H and 13C and 2D NMR characterizations, several astonishing NMR behaviors have been observed in various solvents. For 1, chemical shift values belonging to H-2' of hexyl substituents move to the most upfield; however, such chemical shift values move from 0.48 to 0.85 ppm when pyridine-d5 or benzene-d6 is used as solvent. Our dendrimers as the emissive layers in organic light-emitting diodes gave blue-green light with an external quantum efficiency up to 0.16% both for G0 and for G1 in nitrogen, respectively, which exhibit unique electroluminescence spectra in comparison with their corresponding photoluminescence ones. Poly(p-phenylene vinylene) derivatives (PPVs) are one of the most widely investigated p-type polymers in organic electronics. PPVs generally exhibit electron mobilities lower than 10-4 cm2 V-1 s-1, thus hindering their applications in high-performance polymer field-effect transistors and organic photovoltaics. Herein, we design and synthesize a novel electron-deficient PPV derivative, benzodifurandione-based PPV (BDPPV). This new PPV derivative displays high electron mobilities up to 1.1 cm2 V-1 s-1 under ambient conditions (4 orders of magnitude higher than those of other PPVs), because it overcomes common defects in PPVs, such as conformational disorder, weak interchain interaction, and a high LUMO level. Oligothiophene-functionalized 9,9'-spirobifluorene derivatives exhibit good solubility in polar organic solvents, especially compounds 5a-d to 7a-d due to the introduction of the flexible n-hexyl chain. The structures of all compounds studied are characterized and verified by ¹H and [sup 13]C NMR spectra. The results not only show that these organic conjugated materials with no substituents or n-hexyl substituents are successfully synthesized through the corresponding synthetic methodologies, but also prove that chemical shifts of protons and carbons in the aromatic range change with the attachment and the increase of the thiophene ring at the 9,9'-spirobifluorene fragment. The thermal analysis results demonstrate that these compounds are quite stable, and evaporate from 300 to 700 °C. Most of these compounds exhibit a stable amorphous state in the solid state. The electrochemical properties of all compounds studied are also investigated. The results indicate that radical cation behaviors of oligothiophene-modified 9,9'-spirobifluorene derivatives are more stable than those of normal oligothiophenes, that oxidative and reductive peak potentials shift cathodically or anodically, and that the HOMO and LUMO energy levels are also tuned with the increase of the thiophene ring owing to the enhanced π-electron delocalization and the increasing conjugation length. Oxidative potentials of nonsubstituted oligothiophene-functionalized 9,9'-spirobifluorene derivatives are more sensitive to the increase of thiophene rings than those of 9,9'-spirobifluorene derivatives with n-hexyl groups. The energy levels and band gaps of all compounds studied are also calculated from the onset potentials of n-doping and p-doping and are adjusted by varying thiophene oligomers and their attachment patterns to the 9,9'-spirobifluorene ring to make them suitable for the work functions of the electrodes. The synthesis of 11a,25a-dibora-11,12,25,26-tetraoxatetranaphtho[1,2-a:2',1'-f:1",2"-j:2'",1'"-o]perylene, a double [7]heterohelicene containing OBO units, has been achieved via tandem demethylation-borylation, representing the highest double helicene reported thus far with all six-membered rings. Single-crystal X-ray analysis clearly demonstrated a significantly twisted structure with the terminal aromatic rings overlapping at both ends, giving the first example of a double helicene with intramolecular π-layers. Such structural features resulted in a high theoretical isomerization barrier of 45.1 kcal/mol, which is the highest value for all the double helicenes ever reported, rendering the achieved molecule with high chiral stability. A straightforward strategy has been used to construct large BN-embedded π-systems simply from azaacenes. BN heterosuperbenzene derivatives, the largest BN heteroaromatics to date, have been synthesized in three steps. The molecules exhibit curved π-surfaces, showing two different conformations which are self-organized into a sandwich structure and further packed into a π-stacking column. The assembled microribbons exhibit good charge transport properties and photoconductivity, representing an important step toward the optoelectronic applications of BN-embedded aromatics. One important objective of molecular assembly research is to create highly complex functional chemical systems capable of responding, adapting, and evolving. Compared with living systems, the synthetic systems are still rather primitive and are far from realizing those features. Nature is by far the most important source of inspiration for designing and creating such systems. In this critical review, we summarize an alternative approach, inspired by catalysis, to examine and describe some molecular assembly processes. A new term, "catassembly," is suggested to refer to the increase in the rate and control of a molecular assembly process. This term combines the words "catalysis" and "assembly," and identifiably retains the Greek root "cat-" of catalysis. The corresponding verb is "catassemble" and the noun is "catassembler", referring to the "helper" species. Catassembly in molecular assembly is a concept that is analogous to catalysis in chemical synthesis. After using several examples to illustrate the characteristics of catassembly, we discuss future methodological and theoretical developments. We also emphasize the significance of the synergy between chemical synthesis and molecular assembly, especially for hierarchical assembly systems. Because most efforts in the field of molecular assembly have been devoted to the design and synthesis of molecular building blocks, we wish to stress the apparently missing yet critical link to complex chemical systems, i.e., the design and utilization of molecular catassemblers to facilitate the formation of functional molecular assemblies from building blocks with high efficiency and selectivity. A novel family of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons of various shapes based on the 10H-indeno[1,2-b]triphenylene skeleton has been synthesized via a reaction sequence of Diels-Alder reaction, decarbonylation, followed by an oxidative cyclization. In particular, the reaction conditions for regioselective oxidative cyclization promoted by FeCl3 are investigated, and this reaction is employed as an effective method to afford the above molecules under mild conditions.
