The purpose of this study was to analyze if celiac disease (CD) is associated with increased postoperative complications following single-level posterior lumbar fusion (PLF). A retrospective database review was performed using the PearlDiver dataset. The study population included all patients older than 18 years who underwent elective PLF with diagnosis of CD using International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes. Study patients were compared with controls for 90-day medical complications and 2-year surgical complications including 5-year reoperation rates. A multivariate logistic regression was used to determine the independent effect of CD on the postoperative outcomes. A total of 909 patients with CD and 4483 patients in the matched control group who underwent primary single-level PLF were included in this study. CD patients had a significantly increased risk of 90-day emergency department (ED) visit (OR 1.28; P = 0.020). CD patients also demonstrated higher rates of 2-year pseudarthrosis and instrument failure, but they were statistically comparable (P > 0.05). There was no difference in 5-year reoperation rate. There were also no significant differences in 90-day medical complication rate and 2-year surgical complication rate between the two groups. In addition, there were no differences in procedure cost and 90-day cost. For CD patients undergoing PLF, the current study demonstrated increased rate of 90-day ED visit. With the increasing demand for energy from deep oil and gas reservoirs, oil-well cement slurries are subjected to complex compressive cyclic loading in high-temperature and high-pressure (HTHP) environments. Currently, no standard to guide the evaluation of the fatigue performance of cement slurries under cyclic loading or a systematic investigation to help understand it exists. To fill this gap, this study used a set of innovative HTHP curing and testing devices to mimic the actual operating conditions of deep wells. Cement slurries were cast, cured, and subjected to quasi-static and cyclic loading tests at four downhole temperatures (25, 90, 115, and 140 °C). In the cyclic-loading tests, three loading levels (30%, 50%, and 70%) under 20 MPa confining pressure were applied to study the fatigue performance, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was employed to identify internal microcrack damage. When the downhole temperature increased from 25 to 140 °C and the cyclic loading level increased from 30% to 70%, the accumulated plastic strain of samples increased by 13.8 times. A large increase in the plastic strain of oil-well cement slurries can significantly reduce the fatigue resistance and service life of oil and gas wells. The American Petroleum Institute testing standard (API TR 10TR7) recommends determining the mechanical performance of oil-well cement slurries in an ambient-temperature testing environment. However, with exploration and exploitation resources moving toward deep formations, cement slurries for oil, gas, and geothermal wells are increasingly being utilized in high-temperature and high-pressure (HTHP) in-site formations. It is unknown if the current standard is suitable for assessing the mechanical performance of cement slurry under in-site HTHP conditions in deep wells. To fill this research gap, an innovative experimental platform was developed for this study to mimic the in-site HTHP environments in real production wells; then oil-well cement slurries were cast, cured, and tested at elevated temperatures (i.e., 90 °C, 115 °C, 140 °C) and the confining-pressure (i.e., 20 MPa). The mechanical performance of cement slurries was evaluated under triaxial compression and cyclic loads. The microstructures of cement slurries were also studied. This study revealed that the high-temperature testing environment accelerated the crack propagation and stress drop of stress-strain curves, decreased the failure stress (up to 14.0 %), Young's modulus (up to 16.4 %), and Poisson's ratio (up to 31.7 %), and resulted in more brittle characteristics of cement slurry samples. This study confirmed that using the current standard will significantly overestimate the mechanical properties of oil-well cement slurries in HTHP environments. Continental shale is abundant with unconventional oil and gas and has considerable potential for exploitation. However, due to differences in the deposition environment, continental shale presents unique characteristics in terms of mineralogy and mechanical properties compared to marine shale. Furthermore, the mechanical influence of fracturing fluid immersion must be considered because of the dual effects on the productive shale system caused by fracturing fluids remaining in the formation. In this study, tri-axial compression tests were performed on Jurassic continental shale specimens collected from an exploratory well (2778–2816 m deep) in the Sichuan Basin of China before and after exposure to fracturing fluids. Meanwhile, two quantitative indicators, the roughness R , which characterizes the widely distributed yield deformation, and the complexity F , which evaluates the complex multi-fractures, were used to distinguish the different brittle-plastic characteristics of specimens before and after fracturing fluid immersion. The results showed that the immersion of fracturing fluids weakened the mechanical properties of continental shale. Two types of fracturing fluid immersion effects were distinguished by the statistics of the failure characteristics of the different layers: lubrication-dominated and softening-dominated. Unlike conventional smooth tri-axial stress-strain curves, many of the post-peak curves were in a 'step-like' shape, corresponding to two sources: one part came from the formation of multi-fractures (brittle characteristics), and the other part came from the softening deformation of main failure surface (plastic characteristics). To study the effect of vertical stress difference coefficient on fracture characteristics of shale fracturing, high stress true triaxial hydraulic fracturing test was carried out. By analyzing the profile after fracturing, it was found that the area of hydraulic fracture increased with the increase of vertical stress difference coefficient, and the probability of shear fracture will increase when the stress difference coefficient was high. A high vertical stress differential coefficient exerts a strong control over the direction of crack propagation, while a low vertical stress difference coefficient is beneficial to improve the roughness of hydraulic fracture surface and promote the formation of complex fracture network. By analyzing the pump pressure curves of different tests, it was found that with the increase of vertical stress difference coefficient, the formation and expansion of hydraulic fractures were more difficult. The surface characteristics of hydraulic fractures were quantified based on three‐dimensional topography scanning technology, combined with fractal dimension and fracture area calculation method, the results showed that with the increase of vertical stress difference coefficient, the fractal dimension and fracture area decreased. Since shale is stratified, and the transformation of reservoir is mainly reflected in the enhancement of fracture complexity through tensile failure, Xsite discrete grid method was used to study the influence of fracture propagation behavior with different bedding strengths. The results showed that when the bedding tensile strength was high, hydraulic fractures were easy to pass through the bedding, and when the bedding tensile strength was low, hydraulic fractures were easy to be captured by natural fractures. In addition, tensile cracks were easy to form when the tensile strength of bedding was low, shear cracks were easy to form when the strength of bedding was high, and the fracture volume was larger when the strength of bedding was low. In a casing-cement sheath-formation system, the cement–formation interface is usually weakly cemented for the residual of drilling mud, in which a leakage path would easily form, threatening the safe operation of underground energy exploitation and storage. To evaluate the compressive and shear mechanical behavior of the cement–formation interface, cement–rock composite cylindrical specimens were prepared. Uniaxial and triaxial compression and direct shear tests were implemented. The flushing efficiency of the rock surface, compressive strength, interface incompatible deformation, parameters of shear strength, and morphology of shear failure surface were acquired and analyzed. Results show that the flushing efficiency of shale surface decreases from 76.7% to 64.2% with the surface roughness increasing from 0 to 2 mm. The flushing efficiency of sandstone is only 44.7%, remarkably lower than that of shale. With the stress condition transforming from uniaxial to triaxial compression, the feature of the stress–strain curves changes from elastic-brittle to elastoplastic, and the compressive strength increases from 20.6~60.1 MPa to 110~120 MPa. The cement part presents noteworthy plastic deformation and several micro shear fractures develop. There is incompatible deformation between cement and rock, which induces interface debonding for almost all the composite specimens. The internal friction angle and cohesive strength both decrease with the increase in pollution degree of drilling mud, and increase with the rise in surface roughness. The shear facture surface is not exactly the rock–cement interface, but usually manifests as a shear zone, in which the rock, cement, and interface all contribute to the final shear failure. Genetic risk is the earliest measurable contributor to diseases such as type 1 diabetes (T1D). Multiple groups have demonstrated that genetic (or polygenic) risk scores can quantify individual disease risks in a clinically significant way for complex diseases such as T1D. To date, genetic studies of T1D have been conducted primarily in European-ancestry populations and have identified over 40 susceptibility regions. Genetic risk estimates for T1D have been predominantly calculated from these findings. At the same time, there is also strong evidence that there are limitations in transferability of risk estimates from European-ancestry populations to African ancestry populations. Thus, establishing a better understanding of the genetic architecture of T1D in different populations is critical for appropriate applications of risk scores and eliminating health disparities. Aiming to close this gap in knowledge, we conducted the largest T1D association study in African-ancestry participants to date. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the 12q13.2 region were associated with T1D in European- and African-ancestry populations. We used comparative mapping in the 12q13.2 region to fine-map this physically large and gene-rich T1D risk locus coupled with functional studies. Twelve SNPs (of 22 previously identified European credible SNPs) were nominally (P < 10-4) associated with T1D in African-ancestry populations. Using bioinformatics and ENCODE data, we identified four putative candidate causal SNPs. Using functional assays, we confirmed allele-specific protein binding for two of the 12q13.2 SNPs near RPS26 and IKZF4. While biological influence and detailed functional role of each risk variant will need to be characterized in future functional studies, incorporation of SNPs that capture genetic risk in genetically diverse populations provides insights into causality. The time-dependent characteristics of reservoir performance, where deep shale (vertical depth > 3500 m) interacts with fracturing fluid at high temperature and pressure (HTHP) during or after hydraulic fracturing, are closely related to the optimal design of fracturing in adjacent sections. However, the available information on the effect of hydration under HTHP on shale properties is insufficient, especially since the interaction between fracturing fluid and shales with different mineral compositions has rarely been considered comprehensively. In this study, fluid–shale interactions under HTHP were investigated for typical marine shales with different mineral contents (clay-rich, quartz-rich, and carbonate-rich) collected from the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation in the southern Sichuan Basin, China. The time-dependent characteristics of the mechanical, brittleness, and fracture behaviors of immersion-treated samples at different soaking times were characterized by triaxial compression tests, and X-ray microcomputed tomography (CT) scans of post-test samples. The results show that the evolution of the mechanical parameters with soaking time is different for the three types of shales. The effect of hydration under HTHP on the strength of clay-rich shale and carbonate-rich shale except for the 15-day soaking case ranges from 39.24% to 54.88% and 24.05% to 33.99%, respectively, while the effect on quartz-rich shale is relatively slight, within 20%. The effect of hydration on the shale brittleness was evaluated based on a three-part energy-based brittleness index, in descending order, clay-rich shale > carbonate-rich shale > quartz-rich shale. The crack initiation and propagation during the deformation and failure of the soaked sample are more likely to extend along the direction of the hydration crack. For cases exhibiting quasi-ductile characteristics, hydration-induced microcracks may extend over almost the entire sample, allowing locally concentrated stresses in the immersed sample to be dispersed into each crack during deformation. The experimental results can provide data support and theoretical guidance for fracturing design in deep shale gas exploration in southern Sichuan. Under the high temperature and high stress geological environment, how the physical and mechanical properties of deep shale reservoirs will change has become a hot research issue. Based on the Confined Brazilian Test, this paper improves a test method for the tensile strength of shale under triaxial conditions with a simple specimen fixture and convenient specimen preparation and performs a high confining pressure (0–60 MPa) Brazilian splitting test on Longmaxi Formation shales. The stress-displacement curve records the deformation and failure of shale. Acoustic emission technology (AET) detects the evolution process of fractures and further identifies failure modes. 3D optical scanning system reconstructs the fracture morphology. The results show that the maximum tensile strength of the shale specimens in the triaxial condition is increased by 58.5% relative to direct tensile strength. As the confining pressure gradually increases to 60 MPa, the specimen enters the stress state of compressed in three directions, the tensile failure mode gradually transitions to shear failure mode via tensile-shear composite failure mode, and the fracture angle gradually increases. The AE signal in triaxial conditions mainly shows a leap trend. The appearance of AE signal with high peak frequency can be used as a reference for micro-fracture initiation. The presence of shear fractures increases the roughness of the shale main fracture surface, and this effect diminishes as the confining pressure increases. In karstic-fractured carbonate reservoirs, most of the oil resources are hosted in vugs. Connecting as many vugs as possible by hydraulic fracturing is the key to achieving effective development. However, the interaction mechanism between vugs and hydraulic fractures is complicated and has not been fully revealed. In this study, both experimental and numerical simulations were implemented to investigate the interaction between vugs and hydraulic fractures. Key factors, such as vug size, horizontal stress difference, and the internal pressure of the vug, were considered. The results showed that the vug played an important role in the propagation of hydraulic fractures. Three interaction modes of vugs and hydraulic fractures were observed: crossing, arresting, and bypassing. Owing to the variation of the stress concentration existing around the vug, the hydraulic fracture could be arrested by a small vug but would bypass a vug with a larger size. Whether the hydraulic fracture could communicate with the vug was mainly controlled by the horizontal stress difference. Under large horizontal stress differences (≥20 MPa), the hydraulic fracture could cross and connect multiple vugs. The difference between the horizontal minimum stress and the internal pressure of the vug was also particularly significant for fracture propagation. The smaller the difference, the easier the fracture communicated with the vug. The cement sheath is an annular structure between casing and formation, which is crucial to the integrity of the wellbore system. Considering that the temperature and pressure environment is changing continuously with increasing burial depth, the micro-structure and macro=mechanical properties of the in-situ cement sheath will change accordingly. To investigate the variation of burial depth on the evolution of the tensile mechanical behavior of oil cement stone, five temperature-pressure curing and testing conditions (25 °C—0 MPa, 50 °C—10 MPa, 80 °C—20 MPa, 110 °C—30 MPa, and 140 °C—40 MPa) are set to approximately simulate an in situ temperature-pressure environment at five typical burial depths (0 m, 1000 m, 2000 m, 3000 m, and 4000 m). The in situ tensile behavior, micro-structure and pore size distribution of the cement stones at each condition are tested and comparatively analyzed. Results show that with increasing temperature and pressure, the brittleness of the cement stone reduces and its ductility strengthens accordingly. The tensile strength experiences rapid growth at first, then increases at a slower rate and finally decreases. The failure mode of the cement stone gradually transforms from tensile splitting to tensile-shear composite fracture, accompanied by increasing fracture surface roughness. Microscopically, with increasing curing temperature and pressure, the pore structure of cement stone gradually transforms from closely stacked laminated sheets to interconnected fiber networks. As a new growth point of shale gas production, carbonate-rich shale has recently attracted great interest. However, gas production from this reservoir was poor since the properties of the carbonate-rich shale have not been systematically studied. This is an urgent need to be addressed. Downhole cores collected from an exploration well were analyzed by micro-structure experiments (X-ray diffraction, mineral quantitative evaluation, low-pressure nitrogen adsorption, and mercury intrusion piezometry test) and macro-mechanical tests (triaxial compression, Brazilian splitting, and fracture toughness test) to obtain multiscale characterization of carbonate-rich shale. The intrinsic relationship between the microstructural and mechanical characteristics of this reservoir has been revealed. The results showed that (1) The content of carbonate minerals exceeds 30%, just slightly lower than that of quartz. Calcite has large particle sizes and is closely cemented with quartz to form a dense rock skeleton. (2) The maximum adsorption volume, specific surface area, total pore volume and average pore diameter values are poor, which is unfavorable for shale gas accumulation. Limited porosity and permeability and great tortuosity can be obstacles to the release of accumulated gas. (3) High peak deviatoric stress, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio were contributed by dense rock skeleton. (4) Narrow maximum main fracture width is not favorable to place proppants and further to create effective gas transport channels. (5) High tensile strength and fracture toughness enhance high breakdown and extension pressure. Competitive propagation of fractures initiated from multiple perforation clusters is universal in hydraulic fracturing of unconventional reservoirs, which largely influences stimulation. However, the propagation mechanism of multi-fractures has not been fully revealed for the lack of a targeted laboratory observation. In this study, a physical simulation experiment system was developed for investigating the initiation and propagation of multi-cluster hydraulic fractures. Different from the traditional hydro-fracking test system, the new one was equipped with a multi-channel shunting module and a strain monitoring system, which could guarantee the full fracture extension at each perforation clusters and measure the internal deformation of specimens, respectively. Several groups of true tri-axial fracturing tests were performed, considering the factors of in situ stress, cluster spacing, pumping rate, and bedding structures. The results showed that initiation of multi-cluster hydraulic fractures within one stage could be simultaneous or successive according to the difference of the breakdown pressure and fracturing fluid injection. For simultaneous initiation, the breakdown pressure of the subsequent fracture was lower than or equal to the value of the previous fracture. Multiple fractures tended to attract and merge. For successive initiation, the breakdown pressures of fractures were gradually increasing. The subsequent fracture tended to intersect with or deviated from the previous fracture. Multiple fractures interaction was aggravated by the decrease of horizontal stress difference, bedding number and cluster spacing, and weakened by the increase of pump rate. The propagation area of multiple fractures increased with the pump rate, decreased with the cluster spacing. The strain response characteristics corresponded with the initiation and propagation of fracture, which was conducive to understanding the process of the fracturing. The safe and efficient development of ultra-deep shale gas deeper than 4500 m is closely related to the comprehensive evaluation of the mechanical behavior, brittleness and anisotropy characteristics of reservoir rocks under in-situ stress conditions. However, the above-mentioned information about ultra-deep shale is rarely reported. This study aims to fill this gap by systematically investigating the mechanical and anisotropic characteristics of cores, with 0° and 90° bedding orientations, from different layers in the vertical depth of 4900–4930 m, under confining pressure of 110 MPa. Furthermore, a new brittleness index with three parts related to brittle failure, i.e., the energy storage performance in the pre-peak stage, the performance of elastic energy used to maintain the post-peak failure, and the severity of the energy released during the post-peak stage, all of which are physically meaningful, was proposed. Subsequently, the index was validated and applied to the brittleness evaluation of ultra-deep reservoir rocks. The brittleness was evaluated in the following descending order: black shale of Longmaxi Formation ＞ gray-black shale of Wufeng Formation ＞ limestone of Baota Formation. Overall, the Wufeng- Longmaxi Formation shale still exhibits brittle failure under such high confining pressure, while the Baota Formation limestone exhibits quasi-ductile failure, which is consistent with the phenomenological behavior of cores. Further, various experimental techniques have been employed to study the brittle and quasi-ductile failure mechanisms of reservoir rocks. The anisotropy evaluation results show that the anisotropy degree of the mechanical and brittleness parameters corresponding to the deep formation is significantly lower than that of the shallow formation. The anisotropy degree of strength and deformation parameters (Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio) is closely related to the content of quartz and clay minerals, respectively. Different operations make the borehole temperature change and cause periodic stresses, which often cause variations in the stress state of the sheath or damage. In this paper, the effect of temperature on sheath integrity is investigated. First, the mechanical model of sheath is established and analyzed by shakedown theory. Then, compression experiments of well cement at different temperatures are carried out, and the law of mechanical properties with temperature is obtained. Finally, combining the theoretical analysis and mechanical experiments, the results show that (1) when only the temperature inside the sheath cyclically varies, the negative influence of temperature caused by the practical operations can be negligible. (2) When the internal pressure and temperature act together, the effect of temperature on the sheath is reflected in temperature stress and the change of the cement properties. (3) With the increase of temperature difference (∆T), the cohesion of cement decreases while the internal friction angle increases, and the plasticity characteristics of the cement are enhanced, and the negative effect on the Pmax ascends slowly. (4) The temperature stress is in a positive relationship with the ∆T, and its weakening on the Pmax is about 6% to 7%. (5) Combining the temperature stress and the change of the cement properties, total negative effect of temperature on the sheath accounts for 10% to 12%, when ∆T ranges from 60 to 110 °C. The success of commercial exploitation of shale gas has already been achieved in middle-shallow layers of China. But more than 65% of shale gas resources is buried in deep formation (vertical depth ≥ 3500 m), which has not been effectively developed yet. Deep buried depth is the source of a series of challenges. To clarify the influence of buried depth on mechanical characteristics of shale, tri-axial compression tests considering high confining pressures (80 MPa) are conducted with core samples collected from the gas bearing section of a deep marine shale gas well. The results show that the peak deviatoric stress significantly increases with the growth of confining pressure and exhibits an obvious declining trend from bottom to top in longitudinal profile, whereas Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio were all relatively insensitive to buried depth. Unlike conventional smooth tri-axial test curves, many of the post-peak curves are in "step-like" shape, and their corresponding failure patterns are always multi-fractures, all of which are originated from the activation of bedding planes or natural fractures during yielding process and are indications of high brittleness. However, the proportion of specimens with these features decreases from 66.7% to 22.2%, with the confining pressure increased from 30 MPa to 80 MPa. As most of existed indices could not properly describe the brittle characteristic of this type of deep marine shale, a new brittleness index (BI) is proposed by quantifying the complexity of "step-like" post-peak curves in fractal dimension. It is demonstrated that BI could effectively capture the influence of confining pressure on brittleness and distinguish those more brittle layers. A facile sol-gel method is used to fabricate anatase TiO 2 /amorphous carbon (a-TiO 2 /C) and pure a-TiO 2 nanoparticles as anode materials in lithium-ion battery. In the a-TiO 2 /C hybrid, a-TiO 2 is generated along with synthesis of amorphous carbon. Thus, a-TiO 2 is uniformly embedded into amorphous carbon matrix, which showing a flake structure. The flakes are composed of a number of irregularly sized a-TiO 2 /C nanoparticles. Moreover, the flakes have porous channels. This designed structure suppresses the growth of a-TiO 2 nanoparticles and accelerates the diffusion of lithium ions. Therefore, the hybrid materials exhibit an excellent rate and stability performance compared to pure a-TiO 2 in electrochemical testing. The a-TiO 2 /C anode has discharge capacities of 293 mAh g−1 at 0.05 A g−1 and 172.6 mAh g−1 at 0.5 A g−1. Additionally, the a-TiO 2 /C anode retains a long cycling performance of 224.4 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 over 400 cycles with a capacity retention rate of 86.9%. An average capacity fading loss is 0.03275% per cycle, which is lower than 0.1335% of a-TiO 2 anode per cycle (initial discharge capacity is 290.5 mAh g−1 and final discharge capacity is 135.4 mAh g−1). The results reveal that compounding of amorphous carbon effectively improves the electrochemical performance of a-TiO 2. • The a-TiO 2 /amorphous carbon porous flakes based nanoparticles are produced by a facile process. • Ethylene glycol is both carbon source and solvent without any additional carbon source. • a-TiO 2 is uniformly embeds into carbon matrix. • An average capacity decay is 0.03275% per cycle at 0.2 A/g after 400 cycles.
