Albite (NaAlSi3O8), a framework silicate of the plagioclase feldspar family and a common constituent of felsic rocks, is often present in the siliceous mineral aggregates that compose concrete. When exposed to radiation (e.g., in the form of neutrons) in nuclear power plants, the crystal structure of albite can undergo significant alterations. These alterations may degrade its chemical durability. Indeed, careful examinations of Ar+-implanted albite carried out using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and molecular dynamics simulations show that albite's crystal structure, upon irradiation, undergoes progressive disordering, resulting in an expansion in its molar volume (i.e., a reduction of density) and a reduction in the connectivity of its atomic network. This loss of network connectivity (i.e., rigidity) results in an enhancement of the aqueous dissolution rate of albite--measured using vertical scanning interferometry (VSI) in alkaline environments--by a factor of 20. This enhancement in the dissolution rate (i.e., reduction in chemical durability) of albite following irradiation has significant impacts on the durability of felsic rocks and of concrete containing them upon their exposure to radiation in nuclear power plant (NPP) environments. Background: Our previous studies have suggested that the primary impact of immune cell infiltration into the normal or pre-invasive tissue component is associated with the physical destruction of epithelial capsules, which may promote tumor progression and invasion. Our current study attempted to further verify our previous observations and determine the primary type(s) of infiltrating immune cells and the possible mechanism associated with physical destructions of the epithelial capsules.Methods: In total, the study was conducted with 250 primary breast and prostate tumors, the primary immune cell of cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTL), Natural killer cells (NK) and Mast cells were analyzed by immunohistochemistry, fluorescent labeling and apoptosis assay. qRT-PCR was used for gene expression analysis. Our current study assessed the physical disruption of these immune cells and potential impact on the epithelial capsule of human breast and prostate tumors.Results: Our study yield several clinically-relevant findings that have not been studied before. (1) A vast majority of these infiltrating immune cells are distributed in the normal-appearing or pre-invasive tissue components rather than in invasive cancer tissues. (2) These cells often form rings or semilunar structures that either surround focally-disrupted basal cell layers or physically attach to the basal cells. (3) Basal cells physically associated with these immune cells generally displayed distinct signs of degeneration, including substantially elevated apoptosis, necrosis, and reduced tumor suppressor p63 expression. In contrast, luminal cells overlying focally disrupted basal cell layers had a substantially increased proliferation rate and elevated expression of stem cell markers compared to their adjacent morphologically similar counterparts that overlie a non-disrupted capsule.Conclusion: Our findings suggest that at the early stage of tumor invasion, CTL, NK and Mast cells are the main types of tumor infiltrating immune cells involved in focal degenerative products in the tumor capsules. The primary impact of these infiltrating immune cells is that they are associated with focal disruptions of the tumor capsule, which selectively favor tumor stem cells proliferation and invasion. The purpose of this study was to characterize the immunohistochemical distribution of secreted protein acidic and rich in cystein (SPARC) in benign and malignant breast tumors of different histologic types and define its association with the outcome of invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) patients. A total of 286 samples of benign and malignant breast lesions between 1994 and 2005 were retrieved from National Taiwan University Hospital. Up to 11 years clinical follow-up data were available for 185 patients with IDC. Immunohistochemistry staining with SPARC was performed in tissue microarray or whole section. The association of expression of SPARC and cumulative overall survival of IDC patients were analyzed using Kaplan–Meier survival analysis and Cox regression analysis. Secreted protein acidic and rich in cystein was not expressed in benign breast phylloides and all benign breast tumors, while expressed in 17.2% of IDC, 85% of metaplastic carcinoma of the breast (MCB), and all malignant breast phylloides. Secreted protein acidic and rich in cystein was strongly expressed in mesenchymal components of MCB and expression levels in epithelial components were variable. The correlation of positive expression of SPARC and poor long-term survival in IDC is significant (p = 0.004). Individuals with positive SPARC expression had 2.34 times higher hazard of death compared with those with negative SPARC expression after adjusting for factors including positive lymph node, TNM tumor stage, estrogen receptor, and progesterone receptor. In this paper, high-performance fully silicided source/drain (FSD) thin-film transistors (TFTs) with FSD and ultrashort source/drain extension (SDE) fabricated by the implant-to-silicide (ITS) technique are studied thoroughly. Using the ITS technique, not only the implantation damage but also the silicide spiking is avoided so that the thermal budget can be decreased obviously. The offstate current (Ioff) of the FSD TFTs is equal to (n-channel) or smaller than (p-channel) that of the conventional TFTs. At onstate, due to the FSD and the SDE structure, the parasitic resistance of the S/D region and the carrier-injection resistance between silicide and channel are reduced. Therefore, superior onstate/offstate current ratio can be obtained. The influences of annealing temperature and time are also examined in this paper. A 600 °C/30-s rapid thermal annealing is sufficient to diffuse and activate dopants and, then, fabricate high-performance FSD TFTs. Excellent short-channel behavior of the FSD TFT is also confirmed. To conclude, the high-performance FSD TFT with low parasitic resistance fabricated by low-thermal-budget process is very promising for active-matrix liquid-crystal display, active-matrix organic light-emitting-diode display, and system-on-panel applications. The study reported here, building on the research methods of Conversation Analysis (Sacks et al., 1974), Politeness Theory (Brown and Levinson, 1987), and Relevance Theory (Sperber and Wilson, 1986/1995), attempts to examine the distribution of Mandarin qishi ('actually') and shishishang ('in fact') across two different discourse modes in formal speech settings: formal lectures and TV panel news discussions. The results indicate that qishi is prevalent in TV panel news discussion data, which fall into the interactional mode, whereas shishishang is more prevalent in formal speech data, which fall into the transactional mode. The study shows that in interaction, qishi is addressee-oriented and signals alignment (agreement) or divergence (disagreement), whereas shishishang is message-oriented and asserts a proposition with a tone of certainty. In addition, the study suggests that although the literal meanings of qishi ('it's fact') and shishishang ('in the aspect of fact'), which are concerned with factuality, are seemingly unrelated to emotive expressivity, they offer a rhetorical strategy for expressing the speaker's attitudinal position, and can both serve to indicate the speaker's epistemic inference. The physical model for field enhancement (FE) and the edge effects of body-tied FinFET charge-trapping NAND Flash devices are extensively studied in this paper. First, analytical equations are derived to provide insight to the FE effect for FinFET devices, and these analytical results are validated by 3-D TCAD simulation and experimental verification. Next, complicated programming and erasing characteristics and transconductance and subthreshold slope (gm/SS) behaviors are completely explained by the nonuniform injection behavior along various corner edges in FinFET. FE allows high program and erase speed and larger memory window. On the other hand, the edge effect complicates the device DC I-V, as well as programming and erasing characteristics, and these must be taken into account in memory circuit design.
