Atmospheric dust deposition can modulate the earth's climate and atmospheric CO2 through fertilising the ocean (nutrient source) and by accelerating the biological carbon pump through fuelling the ballasting process. To distinguish the biogeochemical effects of Saharan dust with respect to fertilization and ballasting, and to gain a broader perspective on the coccolith calcite Sr/Ca in relation to the drivers of coccolith export production, we determined the coccolith-Sr/Ca from a one-year (2012–2013) time-series sediment trap record in the western tropical North Atlantic (M4—49°N/12°W). High Sr/Ca were linked to enhanced export production in the upper part of the photic zone, most notably under windier, dry, and dustier conditions during spring. Attenuated Sr/Ca in the autumn probably reflect a combination of lower Sr-incorporation by dominant but small-size placolith-bearing species and the presence of "aged" coccoliths rapidly scavenged during a highly productive and usually fast export event, likely added by (wet) dust ballasting. Higher Sr/Ca observed in the large coccolith size fractions support the existing notion that larger-sized coccolithophores incorporate more Sr during calcification under the same environmental conditions. The presence of the abnormally Sr-rich species Scyphosphaera apsteinii is also shown in the separated large fraction of our Sr/Ca seasonal data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of elevated partial pressure of CO 2 ( p CO 2 ) on plankton communities in oligotrophic ecosystems were studied during two mesocosm experiments: one during summer 2012 in the Bay of Calvi, France, and another during winter 2013 in the Bay of Villefranche, France. Here we report on the relative abundances of coccolithophores versus siliceous phytoplankton, coccolithophore community structure, Emiliania huxleyi coccolith morphology and calcification degree. A p CO 2 mediated succession of phytoplankton groups did not occur. During both experiments, coccolithophore abundance and community structure varied with time independently of p CO 2 levels. Changes in the community structure were partly explained by the concentration of phosphate during the winter experiment. During the summer experiment, it was not clearly related to any of the parameters measured but possibly to changes in temperature. Phenological changes in the community and an attenuated response due to the low biomass building during the winter experiment could have masked the response to p CO 2 . E. huxleyi dominated the coccolithophore community in winter; it was not affected by elevated p CO 2 at any time. In contrast, the abundance of Rabdosphaera clavigera, the dominant species in summer, increased with time and this increase was affected at elevated p CO 2 . Thus, a different coccolithophore community response based on species-specific sensitivities to p CO 2 is still likely. Finally, elevated p CO 2 had no traceable effect on E. huxleyi (type A) coccolith morphology or on the degree of coccolith calcification. Our results highlight the possibility that, in oligotrophic regions, nutrient availability, temperature or intrinsic phenological changes might exert larger constrains on the coccolithophore community structure than high p CO 2 does solely. Abstract: New micropaleontological, palynological, and geochemical results from a relatively shallow (∼500 m) sediment core (NS-14) in the south-eastern Aegean Sea provide a detailed picture of the regional expression of sapropel S1 formation in this sub-basin of the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Specifically, freshwater input during ∼10.6–10.0 ka BP has preceded the deposition of S1. Further decrease in surface water salinity is evidenced between 10.0 and 8.5 ka BP at the lower part of S1a, which in respect to S1b, is featured by warmer (∼19.5 °C) and more productive surface waters associated with dysoxic bottom conditions. A series of coolings detected within the S1 depositional interval, may be linked to outbursts of cold northerly air masses and relevant pulses in the deep-intermediate water ventilation that caused the S1 interruption between 7.9 and 7.3 ka BP and culminated during the deposition of S1b, with the decline of deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) at ∼6.5 ka BP. The climate instability and the relevant absence of anoxia weakened the organic matter preservation in the shallow south-eastern Aegean margin during the S1 times. NS-14 record provides evidence for a distinct mid Holocene warm (up to ∼25 °C) and wet phase associated with the deposition of the sapropel-like layer SMH (Sapropel Mid Holocene), between 5.4 and 4.3 ka BP. The SMH layer could represent evidence of on-going, albeit weak, African monsoon forcing, only expressed at the south-eastern edge of the Aegean Sea. Its end is associated with the 4.2 ka BP Northern Hemisphere mega-drought event and the termination of the African Humid Period at 3.8 ka BP. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Uncertainties about the origin of the many disequilibrium or ‘vital effects’ in a variety of calcifying organisms, and whether these effects are constant or variable, have hampered paleoceanographic application of carbon and oxygen isotopic ratios. Unraveling the source of these effects will improve paleoceanographic applications and may provide new information on changes in cell physiology and ecology. Culture of eight species of coccolithophorids, a dominant marine phytoplankton group, reveals a 5‰ array of disequilibrium or ‘vital effects’ in both the carbon and oxygen isotopic composition of coccolith calcite. In moderate light and nutrient-replete cultures, oxygen isotopic fractionation and carbon isotopic fractionation correlates directly with cell division rates and correlates inversely with cell size across a range of species. However, when growth rates of a single species are increased or decreased by higher or lower light levels, ∊18O is relatively invariant. Likewise, growth rate variations as a function of temperature do not influence coccolith ∊18O; the slope of the ∊18O vs. temperature relation in cultures of both Gephyrocapsa oceanica and Helicosphaera carteri is the same as for abiogenic carbonates. This suggests a constant, species-specific isotopic fractionation which does not vary with cell physiology. The constancy of vital effects suggests that coccolith stable isotopes will provide reliable phase for paleoceanographic reconstruction of temperature and seawater chemistry, as long as monospecific fractions are analyzed or changes in nannofossil assemblages are accounted for with species-specific correction factors. We suspect that the cell size, and its constraints on the rate of CO2 diffusion relative to C fixation, may be the first order influence on coccolith stable isotope vital effects. A quantitative model of this process may provide important constraints on mechanisms of carbon acquisition of coccolithophorids in both modern and extinct species. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Presents information on a study which determined the flux and taxonomic composition of coccolithophores for sediment trap samples collected in two years from Guaymas Basin. Methodology; Results and discussion; Conclusions.

The high-Mg calcite skeleton of Corallium rubrum was analyzed from living colonies collected from a wide range of depths (15 m to 607 m) and environmental settings in the Mediterranean Sea. An overarching goal was to better understand the calcification process and incorporation of elements into the slow-growing skeleton of both shallow and deep-water specimens, and more specifically, to clarify the veracity of geochemical proxies for reconstructing seawater temperatures. The coral internal structure including growth bands were determined by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and petrographic techniques. Trace elements (Li, B, Mg, Sr and Ba) compositions of the coral skeleton were obtained by solution and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Results show that the skeleton of the deep-water specimens has an internal microstructure similar to shallow-water colonies, with the medullar and the annular zones clearly distinguishable in both shallow and deep-water specimens. In general, the bands of the deep-water samples are very thin and equidistant compared to the irregular banding of the shallow-water specimens. Banding differences relate to the contrasting environmental dynamics, with the shallow-water specimens being exposed to large seasonal fluctuations compared to the relative stable conditions of those inhabiting bathyal depths. The inner medullar and outer annular portions differ in their trace element concentrations: Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca and Li/Ca ratios are higher in the medullar zone and seem to be influenced by growth kinetics, whereas B/Ca and Ba/Ca are similar in both zones and hence unaffected by growth rate. The variability of elemental ratios is lower in the deep-water specimens. Growth bands are highly correlated to Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca and Li/Ca, suggesting common mechanism(s) controlling the incorporation of these elements into the coral skeleton. Mg/Ca ratios were especially depleted in the dark bands. Although the mean Mg/Ca of each specimen is positively correlated to ambient seawater temperature, the intra-annual variations and amplitudes differ and do not correlate to the band widths. These findings suggest that intra- and inter-annual variations of Mg/Ca cannot be used to reconstruct a continuous time-series of long-term seasonal temperature records. We report the contribution of planktic foraminifers and coccoliths to the particulate inorganic carbon (PIC) export fluxes collected over an annual cycle (October 2011/September 2012) on the central Kerguelen Plateau in the Antarctic Zone (AAZ) south of the Polar Front (PF). The seasonality of PIC flux was decoupled from surface chlorophyll a concentration and particulate organic carbon (POC) fluxes and was characterized by a late summer (February) maximum. This peak was concomitant with the highest satellite-derived sea surface PIC and corresponded to a Emiliania huxleyi coccoliths export event that accounted for 85% of the annual PIC export. The foraminifer contribution to the annual PIC flux was much lower (15%) and dominated by Turborotalita quinqueloba and Neogloboquadrina pachyderma . Foraminifer export fluxes were closely related to the surface chlorophyll a concentration, suggesting food availability as an important factor regulating the foraminifer's biomass. We compared size-normalized test weight (SNW) of the foraminifers with previously published SNW from the Crozet Islands using the same methodology and found no significant difference in SNW between sites for a given species. However, the SNW was significantly species-specific with a threefold increase from T. quinqueloba to Globigerina bulloides . The annual PIC:POC molar ratio of 0.07 was close to the mean ratio for the global ocean and lead to a low carbonate counter pump effect (~5%) compared to a previous study north of the PF (6–32%). We suggest that lowers counter pump effect south of the PF despite similar productivity levels is due to a dominance of coccoliths in the PIC fluxes and a difference in the foraminifers species assemblage with a predominance of polar species with lower SNW. Abstract: Samples collected by two sediment traps located southwest of Crete in the eastern Mediterranean (EMED) [48A (1953m) and 48B (950m)] from June 2005 to May 2006 were used to study fluxes of organic carbon, carbonate and coccolithophores in combination with the variations of Sr/Ca ratios in different individually picked coccolith species. Considering the complexity of the EMED, we validate the use of Sr/Ca ratios as productivity proxy and unravel the varied processes which may influence it. We examined the relationship between the seasonal peaks in export fluxes and the Sr/Ca ratio in coccoliths of three upper photic zone coccolithophores species collected in the traps, Calcidiscus leptoporus, Helicosphaera carteri and Emiliania huxleyi. We aimed at testing whether high export fluxes are correlated with high Sr/Ca ratios, suggestive of higher nutrient-stimulated production, or Sr/Ca ratios are unchanged during high export periods, suggestive of increased export efficiency or scavenging. Periods of enhanced trap fluxes in March and June result from surface water blooms recognized in satellite imagery. An additional peak flux was found in January, but this peak represents re-suspended or recycled material in the water column. The amplitude of seasonal variations in the Sr/Ca ratios of the three investigated species is small in both traps. In the shallow trap, a decrease in the Sr/Ca ratio of C. leptoporus occurred synchronously with minimal fluxes. The other two species were not measured for this period. In the deep trap, no such decrease in Sr/Ca was observed during minimal fluxes, in either C. leptoporus or H. carteri, probably due to a long residence of coccoliths in the water column, recycling and low export efficiency. Absolute Sr/Ca ratios for all species are lower than in other more productive environments like the Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea, or Sargasso Sea. We conclude that Sr/Ca ratios in coccoliths of surface sediments in the EMED reflect mainly spring–summer bloom conditions averaged over hundreds to thousands of years. In addition, the origin of varying calcite thickness in H. carteri was investigated. The similarity of average Sr/Ca ratios in differently-calcified specimens confirms that coccolith thickness variations in this species result from primary biomineralization processes and not from variable overgrowth by (low Sr) abiogenic calcite in the water column or the sediments. Abstract: The relative and absolute abundances and accumulation rates of foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils were quantified in a box_core containing sapropel S1 from the Florence Rise area (SE of Cyprus; 2302 m water depth). The main objective of this study was to reconstruct in detail variations in paleoecological conditions of water masses during the deposition of this sapropel. In particular, we qualitatively evaluated the importance of carbonate dissolution on planktonic assemblages to better interpret the abundance profiles obtained from the two investigated taxa. Selective carbonate corrosion in the core is shown by 1) the decrease in shell mass weight of selected species of planktonic foraminifera, 2) the decrease in accumulation rate of dissolution_susceptible holococcoliths and coccolith species, and 3) the absence of pteropods. However, the presence of other relatively dissolution_susceptible coccolith species throughout all of the S1 interval suggests moderate dissolution. Florisphaera profunda shows a marked increase in paleofluxes within the sapropel coupled with a decrease in the accumulation rate of the upper_middle photic zone coccoliths, suggesting an ecological depth_separation of the water column, probably characterised by higher nutrient availability at depth and nutrient_depleted surface waters between ∼10 and 6.5 kyr BP. In the same interval Turborotalita quinqueloba and Globigerina bulloides, two foraminiferal species frequently occurring during periods of high fertility, increase in relative abundance. The maximum increase in relative abundance of Globigerinoides ruber (var. alba and rosea) marks the climatic optimum phase and the maximum stratification in surface water that occurred at the beginning of sapropel S1 deposition when the bottom waters were anoxic. An important change in foraminiferal assemblages occurs at ∼8 kyr BP and corresponds with a negative shift in CaCO3, Ba and Corg contents. This short interval marks the establishment of relatively less anoxic conditions in the bottom water, introducing the last phase of sapropel formation. After ∼6.5 kyr BP, a progressive re_establishment of normal oceanographic conditions occurred before the real end of the sapropel S1. This transition is well recorded by the reoccurrence and major accumulation rate of the mixing indicator foraminiferal species Globorotalia inflata and by the gradual decrease in abundance of F. profunda. Here we provide first evidence that the stable oxygen and carbon isotopic composition (δ 18 O, δ 13 C) of the high-magnesium calcite skeleton red coral Corallium rubrum can be used as a reliable seawater temperature proxy. This is based upon the analyses of living colonies of C. rubrum from different depths and localities in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The assessment of the growth rates has been established through the analysis of growth band patterns. The δ 18 O and δ 13 C compositions show large variability with a significant difference between the branches and the bases of the colonies. In both coral portions, the δ 18 O and δ 13 C values are highly correlated and show well-defined linear trends. Following the “lines technique” approach developed by Smith et al. (2000) for scleractinian aragonitic deep-water corals, our data have been combined with published values for the deep-sea gorgonian corals Isididae and Coralliidae from Kimball et al. (2014) and Hill et al. (2011) resulting in the following δ 18 O temperature equation: T ° C = − 5.05 ± 0.24 × δ 18 O intercept + 14.26 ± 0.43 R 2 = 0.962 p value < 0.0001 The error associated with this equation is ± 0.5 °C at the mean temperature of the data set, ± 0.7 °C for corals living in 2 °C water and ± 1 °C for coral living in warmer water (17 °C). The highly significant δ 18 O intercept vs. temperature relationship combined with the “lines technique” method can be reliably applied to the calcitic skeleton to obtain calcification temperature estimates in the past, although this approach requires the knowledge of the past δ 18 O and δ 13 C composition of seawater and it is labor and time intensive. A compilation of several cruises data from 1998 to 2013 was used to derive polynomial fits that estimate total alkalinity (AT) and total inorganic carbon (CT) from measurements of salinity and temperature in the Mediterranean Sea surface waters. The optimal equations were chosen based on the 10-fold cross validation results and revealed that a second and third order polynomials fit the AT and CT data respectively. The AT surface fit showed an improved root mean square error (RMSE) of ±10.6 μmol kg-1. Furthermore we present the first annual mean CT parameterization for the Mediterranean Sea surface waters with a RMSE of ±14.3 μmol kg-1. Excluding the marginal seas of the Adriatic and the Aegean, these equations can be used to estimate AT and CT in case of the lack of measurements. The seven years averages (2005-2012) mapped using the quarter degree climatologies of the World Ocean Atlas 2013 showed that in surface waters AT and CT have similar patterns with an increasing eastward gradient. The surface variability is influenced by the inflow of cold Atlantic waters through the Strait of Gibraltar and by the oligotrophic and thermohaline gradient that characterize the Mediterranean Sea. The summer-winter seasonality was also mapped and showed different patterns for AT and CT. During the winter, the AT and CT concentrations were higher in the western than in the eastern basin, primarily due to the deepening of the mixed layer and upwelling of dense waters. The opposite was observed in the summer where the eastern basin was marked by higher AT and CT concentrations than in winter. Atmospheric CO2 fluctuations over glacial-interglacial cycles remain a major challenge to our understanding of the carbon cycle and the climate system. Leading hypotheses put forward to explain glacial-interglacial atmospheric CO2 variations invoke changes in deep-ocean carbon storage, probably modulated by processes in the Southern Ocean, where much of the deep ocean is ventilated. A central aspect of such models is that, during deglaciations, an isolated glacial deep-ocean carbon reservoir is reconnected with the atmosphere, driving the atmospheric CO2 rise observed in ice-core records. However, direct documentation of changes in surface ocean carbon content and the associated transfer of carbon to the atmosphere during deglaciations has been hindered by the lack of proxy reconstructions that unambiguously reflect the oceanic carbonate system. Radiocarbon activity tracks changes in ocean ventilation, but not in ocean carbon content, whereas proxies that record increased deglacial upwelling do not constrain the proportion of upwelled carbon that is degassed relative to that which is taken up by the biological pump. Here we apply the boron isotope pH proxy in planktic foraminifera to two sediment cores from the sub-Antarctic Atlantic and the eastern equatorial Pacific as a more direct tracer of oceanic CO2 outgassing. We show that surface waters at both locations, which partly derive from deep water upwelled in the Southern Ocean, became a significant source of carbon to the atmosphere during the last deglaciation, when the concentration of atmospheric CO2 was increasing. This oceanic CO2 outgassing supports the view that the ventilation of a deep-ocean carbon reservoir in the Southern Ocean had a key role in the deglacial CO2 rise, although our results allow for the possibility that processes operating in other regions may also have been important for the glacial-interglacial ocean-atmosphere exchange of carbon. The mean predicted decrease of 0.3-0.4 pH units in the global surface ocean by the end of the century has prompted urgent research to assess the potential effects of ocean acidification on the marine environment, with strong emphasis on calcifying organisms. Among them, the Mediterranean red coral ( Corallium rubrum) is expected to be particularly susceptible to acidification effects, due to the elevated solubility of its Mg-calcite skeleton. This, together with the large overexploitation of this species, depicts a bleak future for this organism over the next decades. In this study, we evaluated the effects of low pH on the species from aquaria experiments. Several colonies of C. rubrum were long-term maintained for 314 days in aquaria at two different pH levels (8.10 and 7.81, pHT). Calcification rate, spicule morphology, major biochemical constituents (protein, carbohydrates and lipids) and fatty acids composition were measured periodically. Exposure to lower pH conditions caused a significant decrease in the skeletal growth rate in comparison with the control treatment. Similarly, the spicule morphology clearly differed between both treatments at the end of the experiment, with aberrant shapes being observed only under the acidified conditions. On the other hand, while total organic matter was significantly higher under low pH conditions, no significant differences were detected between treatments regarding total carbohydrate, lipid, protein and fatty acid composition. However, the lower variability found among samples maintained in acidified conditions relative to controls, suggests a possible effect of pH decrease on the metabolism of the colonies. Quantitative analyses of coccolithophores, planktonic foraminifers, dinoflagellate cysts and pollen assemblages were carried out on shallow (NS-14) and deeper (NS-40) sediment cores from the south-eastern Aegean Sea. Nine coccolithophore (ACE 1–9) and nine planktonic foraminifer (APFE 1–9) ecozones, correlated with dinoflagellate cyst evidence, have been defined for the last ~14.5 cal. ka. Additionally, eight pollen assemblage zones (PAZ 1–8) have been recognised and correlated with the plankton ecozones. Although generally consistent with existing schemes for the central and eastern Mediterranean, the established high-resolution ecostratigraphy has led to an expanded palaeoecological reconstruction of the Late Glacial–Holocene archive in the south-eastern Aegean Sea, defining two warm and humid phases at 9.3–8.6 and 7.6–6.4 cal. ka b.p., associated with the deposition of the early Holocene sapropel S1, and a third one between 5.2 and 4.2 cal. ka b.p. Abstract: Six moorings were deployed at different locations in the deep submarine canyons along the south–west margin of Crete, providing a total of eight sediment-trap time series from June 2005 to May 2006. Within this dataset, we analyzed the record from intact coccospheres, which represent the signal of export production from the coccolithophore community. The most abundant species at all stations during the whole investigated period were E. huxleyi and A. robusta, followed by S. pulchra HET, G. flabellatus, H. carteri, F. profunda, S. pulchra HOL oblonga, while the rest of the species represented ≤1% of the assemblage. Overall the assemblage composition was comparable at all stations, with slight variations mostly related to the different preservation of coccosphere integrity at the different collection depths. The consistent pattern of seasonal variation in species distribution and total coccolithophore export allowed us to define the occurrence of three main periods: a) March to June, with high overall coccosphere flux (up to 4.3×105–3.4×106 coccospheres m−2 day−1), increased abundance of E. huxleyi and subordinate H. carteri s.s., Umbilicosphaera spp. and S. pulchra; b) June to November, with high but gradually decreasing total coccosphere flux (up to 7×105–1.4×106 coccospheres m−2 day−1) and high relative abundance of the deep photic zone species A. robusta, F. profunda, G. flabellatus as well as S. pulchra and Coronosphaera spp., R. clavigera, U. tenuis, D. tubifera and holococcolithophores; c) November to February, with low overall export fluxes (3.5–9×104 coccospheres m−2 day−1) and high relative abundance of A. robusta, S. pulchra and Syracosphaera spp. These three periods correspond to the seasonal changes in sea surface temperature, surface mixed layer depth and rainfall and are associated with varying total surface primary production, as detected through remote sensing in the surface waters. Abstract: Profiles of alkenone concentration, the abundance of the calcified alkenone-producing species Emiliania huxleyi and Gephyrocapsa oceanica as well as nutrient and phytoplankton pigment concentrations were measured through the euphotic zone in surface waters of the Gulf of California during cruises in two different summers (2004, 2005) and one winter (2005). As determined using a biomarker and pigment inventory approach, E. huxleyi and G. oceanica, always the most abundant coccolithophore species at all sampling sites and seasons, represented only a minor fraction of total haptophytes which themselves constituted only a minor fraction of the total phytoplankton community. In winter, alkenone concentration was highest at the surface and displayed relatively uniform values with depth throughout the nutrient-replete euphotic zone. In summer, it display a subsurface peak in nitrate-depleted waters situated just above the nitracline and the deep chlorophyll maximum layer (DCML), a feature found to be well-developed at most sites. Maximum biomarker abundance was comparable in the two seasons, although the putative alkenone-producing coccolithophore species were more abundant in winter than in summer. Estimates of cellular alkenone content for the combined abundance of E. huxleyi and G. oceanica at each sampling depth showed that cells residing in the nitrate-depleted upper euphotic zone in summer were typically more enriched than those residing in nutrient-replete waters found deeper in the euphotic zone or throughout the euphotic zone in winter. The former estimates were very similar to values documented in laboratory cultures of E. huxleyi harvested in a nutrient-depleted stationary growth phase and the latter to those harvested in an exponential growth phase, under the influence of incipient light limitation. Overall, our findings imply that calcifying forms of E. huxleyi and G. oceanica can account for the measured alkenone concentration at all sites and sampling times. Although the life history of these organisms is known to include non-calcifying stages, it is unnecessary to invoke such an explanation as the cause for the elevated alkenone content of cells from nutrient-depleted surface waters in summer.
