The Mediterranean basin constitutes one of the best areas to analyse Neanderthal populations and lifestyles in South-Western Europe. In this context, new excavations conducted in the Middle Palaeolithic site of Cova del Puntal del Gat expand the information available regarding this rich region. In this study, new results are reported, including detailed studies on stratigraphy, lithic technology, anthracology, carpology, and zooarchaeology and taphonomy of macro and micromammals, with the final objective of characterizing the Neanderthals’ subsistence strategies and occupational patterns. These results are framed within a broader regional study perspective that includes MIS 5 and 4 sites. Chronostratigraphic review has enabled us to reorganize many sites that were originally included in MIS 3, towards older stages belonging to the end of MIS 4 and throughout MIS 5. As a result of recent field work, three liverworts (Myriocoleopsis minutissima subsp. minutissima (Sm.) R.L. Zhu, Y. Yu & Pócs, Riccia cavernosa Hoffm. emend. Raddi, Riella notarisii (Mont.) Mont.) and five mosses (Brachytheciastrum dieckei (Röll) Ignatov & Huttunen, Hedwigia striata (Wilson) Bosw., Orthotrichum laevigatum J.E. Zetterst., Tortula schimperi M.J. Cano, O. Werner & J. Guerra, and Zygodon forsteri (Dicks.) Mitt.) were newly recorded for Corsica. The new localities are briefly described. As a result, the bryophyte flora of Corsica now comprises 587 species, among which 424 mosses, 160 liverworts and three hornworts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fragmentary fossil history of whale barnacles (Cirripedia: Coronulidae) is mainly constituted by remains of Coronula spp. in Plio-Pleistocene deposits found along extant humpback whale migration routes, and especially in occurrence of breeding areas. Here we report the presence of a single compartment of Cetopirus along with remains of Coronula bifida in Lower Pleistocene open shelf deposits of Salento (South Italy). This is the first occurrence of the genus Cetopirus prior to the Late Glacial period (ca. 15–10 ky before Present), and the specimen here studied is designated as the holotype of the new fossil species Cetopirus fragilis . Since Cetopirus is currently found exclusively inhabiting the skin of the right whales ( Eubalaena spp.), the fossil material here studied suggests the persistence of Balaenidae in the Mediterranean Basin during the Early Pleistocene and supports the existence of a baleen whale migratory route active between the central Mediterranean and the North Atlantic during the Plio-Pleistocene. Most climate change projections show important decreases in water availability in the Mediterranean region by the end of this century. We assess those main climate change impacts on water resources in three medium-sized catchments with varying climatic conditions in northeastern Spain. A combination of hydrological modelling and climate projections with B1 and A2 IPCC emission scenarios is performed to infer future streamflows. The largest reduction (34%) in mean streamflows (for 2076–2100) is expected in the headwaters of the two wettest catchments, while lower decreases (25% of mean value for 2076–2100) are expected in the drier one. In all three catchments, autumn and summer are the seasons with the most notable projected decreases in streamflow, of 50% and 30%, respectively. Thus, ecological flows in the study area might be noticeably influenced by climate change, especially in the headwaters of the wet catchments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article addresses the critical need for a better quantitative understanding of how water resources from the Hérault River catchment in France have been influenced by climate variability and the increasing pressure of human activity over the last 50 years. A method is proposed for assessing the relative impacts of climate and growing water demand on the decrease in discharge observed at various gauging stations in the periods 1961–1980 and 1981–2010. An annual water balance at the basin scale was calculated first, taking into account precipitation, actual evapotranspiration, water withdrawals and water discharge. Next, the evolution of the seasonal variability in hydroclimatic conditions and water withdrawals was studied. The catchment was then divided into zones according to the main geographical characteristics to investigate the heterogeneity of the climatic and human dynamics. This delimitation took into account the distribution of climate, topography, lithology, land cover and water uses, as well as the availability of discharge series. At the area scale, annual water balances were calculated to understand the internal changes that occurred in the catchment between both past periods. The decrease in runoff can be explained by the decrease in winter precipitation in the upstream areas and by the increase during summer in both water withdrawals and evapotranspiration in the downstream areas, mainly due to the increase in temperature. Thus, water stress increased in summer by 35%. The wild olive distribution extends from the Mediterranean region to south Asia and Austral Africa. The species is also invasive, particularly in Australia. Here, we investigated the sequence variation at five nuclear single-copy genes in 41 native and invasive accessions of the Mediterranean and African olive subspecies. The nucleotide diversity was assessed and the phylogenetic relationships between alleles were depicted with haplotype networks. A Bayesian clustering method (STRUCTURE) was applied to identify the main gene pools. We found an average of 18.4 alleles per locus. Native Mediterranean and African olives only share one allele, which testifies for ancient admixture on the Red Sea hills. The presence of divergent alleles in the Mediterranean olive, as well as the identification of two main genetic clusters, suggests a complex origin with two highly differentiated gene pools from the eastern and western Mediterranean that recently admixed. In the invasive range, relatively high nucleotide diversity is observed as a consequence of the introduction of alleles from two subspecies. Our data confirm that four invasive individuals are early-generation hybrids. The Mediterranean basin has been identified as one of the world's regions most vulnerable to climatic and anthropogenic changes. A methodology accounting for the basin specific conditions is developed to assess the impacts of these changes on water resources. Based on global climate projections and water-use scenarios inspired by national reports, the current water stress state is addressed first and then it is explored for the medium-term. Currently, the southern and eastern rims are experiencing high to severe water stress. By the 2050 horizon, this stress could increase over the whole Mediterranean basin, notably because of a 30–50% decline in freshwater resources as a result of climate change. In addition, under a business-as-usual water-use scenario, total water withdrawals are projected to double on the southern and eastern rims. These worrying trends indicate the need to develop mitigation scenarios. In accord with the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development, an alternative water-use scenario based on improvements in the efficiency of water distribution networks and of irrigated agriculture is investigated. Such progress would stabilize total water withdrawals over the Mediterranean basin and even make them decrease (10–40%) in many northern catchments. Water stress could thus be tempered in some eastern catchments and remain low on the northern rim. This study highlights the importance of developing sustainable development strategies to cope with climatic and anthropogenic changes in order to explore their impacts at regional scales. This paper studies the agro-environmental problem caused by soil erosion in southern Spain's olive groves, seen as a phenomenon deriving from economic development. It therefore reviews European regulations on environmental impact in the agrarian sector as a consequence of macroeconomic policies favoring intensive production. It also reviews the scientific literature on the economic dimension of agrarian innovations relating to the adoption of soil conservation practices. Then, an empirical study of the economic productivity of a sample of 582 olive grove lots in the Andalusian provinces of Granada and Jaén in 2004, selected for their medium and high levels of soil erosion, is conducted. Abstract: The origin of chloride-rich karstic spring waters representative of the Languedoc-Roussillon region has been investigated with a hydrochemical approach. To this end, the major and trace elements most often used in the study of saline environments have been considered (Cl, SO4, Br, B, Li). This study allowed distinguishing the different end-members of the various chloride-rich karstic spring waters (evaporitic, marine, geothermal). Associated with the Cl, Br and B contents, the Li/SO4 ratio appeared as a relevant tracer for the determination of the origin of lithium and by extension of the considered waters. The Nabeul-Hammamet series analysis allows to recognize the six biozona known in the Mediterranean realm, as specified by . These are: the Sphaeroidinellopsis subdehiscens BANNER & BLOW acme biozone equivalent to MPL1; the Globorotalia margaritae margaritae BOLLI & BERMUDEZ interval zone (= MPL2); the Globorotalia margaritae BOLLI & BERMUDEZ, Globorotalia puncticulata (DESHAYES), concurrent range zone (= MPL3); the Sphaeroidinellopsis subdehiscens BANNER & BLOW interval zone (= MPL4); the Globigerinoides elongatus (D’ORBIGNY) interval zone (= MPL5); the Globorotalia inflata (D’ORBIGNY) interval zone (= MPL6). There is no similarity between these biozones and those established by for the atlantic and the indo-pacific realms. The MPL1, MPL2, MPL3 and MPL4 zones are especially englobed in argillaceous and yellow sandy lithological units specified in north-eastern Tunisia, such as ‘Argiles des Potiers’, ‘Sables Jaunes de Nabeul’ and ‘Argiles de Sidi Barka’. These units are together equivalent to the Raf-Raf Formation developed towards the North, in the Bizerte area. Besides, the MPL5 and the MPL6 zones are included in sands and sandstones composing the Hammamet unit, equivalent to the Porto-Farina Formation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
