Highly fatal canine leptospirosis emerged in urban Sydney dogs in 2017, and serovar Copenhageni, against which a registered monovalent vaccine is available, was predominant until 2020. This study was conducted to (1) determine serological characteristics of canine leptospirosis in New South Wales (NSW) between 2021 and 2023; (2) describe the geospatial distribution of leptospirosis; and (3) evaluate if clinicopathological abnormalities and outcome differ between the dominant infecting serovars, Copenhageni versus Australis. Cases were identified through referral or direct veterinarian contact and included if clinical and clinicopathological findings confirmed leptospirosis. Between 2021 and 2023 leptospirosis was confirmed in 61 dogs in NSW. In 2022 two major outbreaks occurred in the local government areas of Shoalhaven (n = 23) and Lake Macquarie (n = 7). The most common serovar identified by microscopic agglutination test (MAT) was Australis (n = 23) followed by Copenhageni (n = 8), Pomona (n = 2), Robinsoni (n = 2) and Bratislava (n = 1). In 16/18 cases from Shoalhaven in which serological results were available, serovar Australis was identified. Dogs infected with serovar Copenhageni were significantly (P < 0.05) more likely to have hepatic involvement with significantly higher liver enzyme activities, bilirubin concentration and icterus, whereas dogs with serovar Australis were significantly (P < 0.01) more likely to have glucosuria. Overall case fatality rate was 40% and was not different between infecting serovars. There are regional differences of infecting serovars with distinct leptospirosis hotspots, and differences in clinicopathological findings. The apparent emergence of serovar Australis highlights the need for bi‐ or multivalent vaccines and ongoing case surveillance of causal serovars is needed. Nontyphoidal salmonellosis is an important foodborne and zoonotic infection that causes significant global public health concern. Diverse serovars are multidrug-resistant and encode several virulence indicators; however, little is known on the role prophages play in driving these traits. Here, we extracted prophages from seventy-five Salmonella genomes which represent the fifteen important serovars in the United Kingdom. We analyzed the intact prophages for the presence of virulence genes and established their genomic relationships. We identified 615 prophages from the Salmonella strains, from which 195 prophages are intact, 332 are incomplete, while 88 are questionable. The average prophage carriage was found to be 'extreme' in S. Heidelberg, S. Inverness, and S. Newport (10.2–11.6 prophages/strain), 'high' in S. Infantis, S. Stanley, S. Typhimurium, and S. Virchow (8.2–9.0 prophages/strain), 'moderate' in S. Agona, S. Braenderup, S. Bovismorbificans, S. Choleraesuis, S. Dublin, and S. Java (6.0–7.8 prophages/strain), and 'low' in S. Javiana and S. Enteritidis (5.8 prophages/strain). Cumulatively, 61 virulence genes (1500 gene copies) were detected from representative intact prophages and linked to Salmonella delivery/secretion system (42.62%), adherence (32.7%), magnesium uptake (3.88%), regulation (5%), stress/survival (1.6%), toxins (10%), and antivirulence (1.6%). Diverse clusters were formed among the intact prophages and with bacteriophages of other enterobacteria, suggesting different lineages and associations. Our work provides a strong body of data to support the contributions diverse prophages make to the pathogenicity of Salmonella, including thirteen previously unexplored serovars. Despite a reduction of Salmonella contamination on final poultry products, the level of human salmonellosis cases attributed to poultry has remained unchanged over the last few years. There needs to be improved effort to target serovars which may survive antimicrobial interventions and cause illness, as well as to focus on lessening the amount of contamination entering the processing plant. Advances in molecular enumeration approaches allow for the rapid detection and quantification of Salmonella in pre- and postharvest samples, which can be combined with deep serotyping to properly assess the risk affiliated with a poultry flock. In this study, we collected a total of 160 boot sock samples from 20 broiler farms across four different integrators with different antibiotic management programs. Overall, Salmonella was found in 85% (68/80) of the houses, with each farm having at least one Salmonella-positive house. The average Salmonella quantity across all four complexes was 3.6 log10 CFU/sample. Eleven different serovars were identified through deep serotyping, including all three key performance indicators (KPIs; serovars Enteritidis, Infantis, and Typhimurium) defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture--Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS). There were eight multidrug resistant isolates identified in this study, and seven which were serovar Infantis. We generated risk scores for each flock based on the presence or absence of KPIs, the relative abundance of each serovar as calculated with CRISPRSeroSeq (serotyping by sequencing the clustered regularly interspaced palindromic repeats), and the quantity of Salmonella organisms detected. The work presented here provides a framework to develop directed processing approaches and highlights the limitations of conventional Salmonella sampling and culturing methods. IMPORTANCE: Nearly one in five foodborne Salmonella illnesses are derived from chicken, making it the largest single food category to cause salmonellosis and indicating a need for effective pathogen mitigation. Although industry has successfully reduced Salmonella incidence in poultry products, there has not been a concurrent reduction in human salmonellosis linked to chicken consumption. New efforts are focused on improved control at preharvest, which requires improved Salmonella surveillance. Here, we present a highresolution surveillance approach that combines quantity and identity of Salmonella in broiler flocks prior to processing which will further support improved Salmonella controls in poultry. We developed a framework for this approach, indicating that it is possible and important to harness deep serotyping and molecular enumeration to inform on-farm management practices and to minimize risk of cross-contamination between flocks at processing. Background and Aim: Food poisoning caused by Salmonella enterica serovars is the most common type of foodborne illness. Tainted chicken meat is a major vector for spreading these serovars throughout the food supply chain. Salmonella isolates that developed resistance to commonly used antimicrobials pose a noteworthy risk to public health, yet there has been a lack of data on this issue in Iraq. Therefore, it is crucial to address these serious public health challenges with an adequate database on the occurrence and antibiotic resistance of these serovars. This study aimed to determine the frequency of occurrence of Salmonella enterica serovars Enteritidis and Typhimurium (S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium), antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and prevalence of multidrug resistance among S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium isolated from poultry meat collected in Wasit Province in Iraq. Materials and Methods: A total of 150 raw and frozen poultry meat samples were gathered from retail markets in various locales across the Wasit Governorate in Iraq. Salmonella spp. were successfully cultured and identified using the technique recommended by ISO 6579:2002, with minor modifications. The multiplex polymerase chain reaction approach was used to confirm Salmonella spp. (S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium). A disk diffusion test was performed to determine the susceptibility to particular antimicrobial agents, and 12 different antimicrobial agents were evaluated. Results: Only 19 of the 150 (12.7%) samples tested positive for Salmonella (16% and 11% were isolated from raw and frozen chicken meat, respectively). S. Enteritidis accounted for 63.2%, whereas S. Typhimurium accounted for 36.8%. Nalidixic acid resistance was the most common (73.7%), followed by sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (63.2%) and tetracycline (63.2%), but gentamicin and ciprofloxacin (up to 15.8%) only had modest resistance. Antibiogram of S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium yield 13 antibiotypes. Among the 19 Salmonella isolates, 12 of 19 (63.2%) established resistance to no less than three categories of antimicrobials. Conclusion: This study highlighted the necessity of limiting the utilization of antibiotics in animal production by providing vital information regarding the frequency and AMR of Salmonella at markets in Wasit Province. Introduction: Salmonellosis is a foodborne bacterial disease responsible for food epidemics around the world. The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence and diversity of Salmonella serotypes in several food products isolated at the Casablanca Regional Analysis and Research Laboratory and to test their resistance to different antimicrobials. Methodology: The isolation and identification of Salmonella were performed according to Moroccan standard 08.0.116. All isolates were serotyped and were then tested for antibiotic resistance using the disk diffusion method. The Salmonella isolates were further analyzed by PCR to detect the presence of virulence genes invA. Results:20 different serotypes were identified from 80 strains isolated from 2015 to 2019, the most common of which are S. kentucky (26.3%) followed by S. muenster (10%), S. typhimurium (8.7%), S. menston (7.5%) and S. enteritidis (6.3%). Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed that 66.25% of isolates were resistant to at least one of the 14 antimicrobial agents tested. Bacterial resistance was most frequently observed for tetracycline with 46.25%, 45% to sulfonamide, 35% to nalidixic acid, 26, 25% to ampicillin, and 25% to ciprofloxacin. Salmonella serotypes S. montevideo, S. virchow, S. amsterdam, S. anatum, and S. bloomsbury were 100% susceptible to all antimicrobials tested. Examination of Salmonella for invA gene was positive for all the strains. Conclusions: The results of this study have shown that minced meat has a high level of Salmonella contamination, which can be considered one of the main potential sources of human salmonellosis in Morocco. Background: Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) is a common cause of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The genetic characterisation of C. trachomatis serovars reveals significant genetic diversity in this organism. This study investigated the diversity of C. trachomatis serovars in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected pregnant women in South Africa. Methods: For this study, 385 vaginal swab samples were tested for the presence of C. trachomatis. The swabs were collected from HIVinfected pregnant women at the King Edward VIII Hospital in Durban, South Africa. The outer membrane protein (omp1) gene from C. trachomatis was amplified and positive amplicons were digested with restriction enzymes AluI, DdeI and HinfI for the assignment of serovars. Results: The prevalence of C. trachomatis in the study population was 12.2% (47/385). Serovar E (46.5%) was the most frequent serovar in our study population, followed by serovars F (20.9%), G (14.0%) and D (11.6%). Serovar I (4.7%), which was detected in two samples, was the least frequent. Risk factors for C. trachomatis include having a low level of education, being unemployed, being unmarried, not cohabitating, early age of first sex, high number of lifetime sex partners, a partner having other partners, lack of condom use, lacking symptoms of STIs, and lacking treatment for STIs. Conclusion: Five different serovars were observed among the participants. The high genetic diversity observed in this study contributes to the challenges regarding future vaccine design and the development of antigen-based rapid diagnostic tests for Chlamydia. Poultry remains a considerable source of foodborne salmonellosis despite significant reduction of Salmonella incidence during processing. There are multiple entry points for Salmonella during production that can lead to contamination during slaughter, and it is important to distinguish the serovars present between the different stages to enact appropriate controls. National Salmonella data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Food Safety Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) monitoring of poultry processing was analyzed from 2016 to 2020. The overall Salmonella incidence at processing in broiler carcasses and intact parts (parts) decreased from 9.00 to 6.57% over this period. The incidence in parts was higher (11.15%) than in carcasses (4.78%). Regional differences include higher proportions of serovars Infantis and Typhimurium in the Atlantic and higher proportion of serovar Schwarzengrund in the Southeast. For Georgia, the largest broiler-producing state, USDAFSIS data were compared to Salmonella monitoring data from breeder flocks over the same period, revealing serovar Kentucky as the major serovar in breeders (67.91%) during production but not at processing, suggesting that it is more effectively removed during antimicrobial interventions. CRISPR-SeroSeq was performed on breeder samples collected between 2020 and 2021 to explain the incongruence between pre- and postharvest and showed that 32% of samples contain multiple serovars, with up to 11 serovars found in a single flock. High-resolution sequencing identifies serovar patterns at the population level and can provide insight to develop targeted controls. Background: Mannheimia haemolytica is commonly associated with respiratory disease in cattle worldwide as a cause of fibrinous pneumonia, bronchopneumonia and pleuritis. M. haemolytica is further subdivided into 12 serovars, however not all are considered to be pathogenic in cattle. The study aim was to determine the most common serovars of M. haemolytica associated with respiratory disease in cattle in Great Britain, which is currently unknown and could be useful information for clinicians when considering preventative strategies. Results: One hundred four M. haemolytica isolates isolated from bovine clinical pathology and post-mortem samples from pneumonia cases between 2016 and 2018 were tested using a multiplex PCR assay to identify M. haemolytica serovars A1, A2 and A6. 46 isolates (44.2%) typed as M. haemolytica serovar A1, 31 (29.8%) as M. haemolytica serovar A2 and 18 isolates (17.3%) as M. haemolytica serovar A6. Nine isolates (8.7%) were not A1, A2 or A6 so were considered to belong to other serovars or were not typable. Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of M. haemolytica serovars other than A1 which may be responsible for respiratory disease in cattle and could help guide the veterinarian when making choices on preventative vaccination programmes. Salmonella is an important pathogen as a causative agent of gastroenteric diseases by consumption of contaminated food. To determine the genetic similarity of Salmonella serovars, 340 samples of feces and ileum tissue were collected from pigs of different ages and physiological stages from two farms located in the central zone of the of State of Sinaloa; ileum samples were collected from FIT slaughterhouses. Gene similarity of serovars was performed by digestion with the restriction enzyme XbaI and pulsed field ge electrophoresis (PFGE). Salmonella and serovars Anatum, Seftenberg, Untipable, Javiana, Tokoin, Newport, Typhimurium, Weltevreden, Serrakunda, Muenchen, Group C2, Group E1 (E2-E4), Group E1, Group C1 and Group F were isolated from 32 of the samples analyzed. The most frequently isolated serovar Anatum had a genetic similarity of 87.5 - 100%, Group E1 87.5 -100%, Serrekunda 88.9 -100%, Muenchen 100%, Senftenberg 96.6% and Newport 75.9%; these had a Jaccard coefficient greater than 0.75 in the PFGE analysis and were therefore considered bacterial clones. In this study, a total of 228 raw meat samples (pork: 76, beef: 76, chicken: 76) and 301 raw seafood samples (fish: 199, shrimp: 67, squid: 35) were collected randomly at traditional markets in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam). In meat, the ratio of Salmonella spp. was 70.61% (161/228). Among the contaminated meat samples, pork was infected with a ratio of 90.79 % (69/76) while the contamination ratios in beef and chicken were 43.42% (33/76) and 77.63% (59/76), respectively. Salmonella contamination was detected in fish (40.20%), shrimp (7.46%) and squid (17.14%). Because of sulfonamide group is used in Salmonella treatment, the study focused on sulfonamide resistance. In fresh seafood comparison, there were 32.56%, 40% and 10% Salmonella showing resistance to sulfamethoxazol in fish, squid and shrimp, respectively. In fresh meat comparison, there were 31.58%, 16.67% and 55.56% Salmonella showing resistance to sulfamethoxazol in pork, beef and chicken, respectively. Interestingly, there were 21 serovars including 19 identified serovars including S. Kentucky (8), S. Agona (2), S. Infanis (4), S. Saintpaul (1), S. Indiana (1), S. Braenderup (1), S. Potsman (2) and 2 unidentified serovars showing different phenotype to this antibiotic. Among the 21 serovars, only 23.81% strains carried both genes (sul1, sul2). For the sul1 gene, 61.9% strains were presented while sul2 occupied at a lower rate than sul1 with the rate of 52.38%. Background The Global Enteric Multicenter Study (GEMS) determined the etiologic agents of moderate-to-severe diarrhea (MSD) in children under 5 years old in Africa and Asia. Here, we describe the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) serovars in GEMS and examine the phylogenetics of Salmonella Typhimurium ST313 isolates. Methods Salmonella isolated from children with MSD or diarrhea-free controls were identified by classical clinical microbiology and serotyped using antisera and/or whole-genome sequence data. We evaluated antimicrobial susceptibility using the Kirby-Bauer disk-diffusion method. Salmonella Typhimurium sequence types were determined using multi-locus sequence typing, and whole-genome sequencing was performed to assess the phylogeny of ST313. Results Of 370 Salmonella- positive individuals, 190 (51.4%) were MSD cases and 180 (48.6%) were diarrhea-free controls. The most frequent Salmonella serovars identified were Salmonella Typhimurium, serogroup O:8 (C2-C3), serogroup O:6,7 (C1), Salmonella Paratyphi B Java, and serogroup O:4 (B). The prevalence of NTS was low but similar across sites, regardless of age, and was similar among both cases and controls except in Kenya, where Salmonella Typhimurium was more commonly associated with cases than controls. Phylogenetic analysis showed that these Salmonella Typhimurium isolates, all ST313, were highly genetically related to isolates from controls. Generally, Salmonella isolates from Asia were resistant to ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone, but African isolates were susceptible to these antibiotics. Conclusions Our data confirm that NTS is prevalent, albeit at low levels, in Africa and South Asia. Background and Aim: For understanding the epidemiology of leptospirosis, the confined abundance of several species of pathogenic leptospires and knowledge on the serovar(s) prevalent in the reservoir and carrier hosts may be a useful indicator of transmission to incidental/accidental hosts in a geographical niche. The present study was carried out to ascertain the frequency distribution of Leptospira serovars and the prevalence of anti-leptospiral antibodies in small ruminants (sheep and goats) in the epidemiological units (villages) in the coastal districts of enzootic regions in South Peninsular India. Materials and Methods: A total of 1167 serum samples (sheep n=299 and goats n=868) from apparently healthy animals, randomly collected from various epidemiological units were tested in microscopic agglutination test (MAT) using 18 reference Leptospira serovars antigens. Results: The overall seroprevalence of 40% (at 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 36.82-42.43) in small ruminants (44% [95% CI: 40.49-52.26] in sheep and 38% [95% CI: 34.96-41.41] in goats) was observed with the predominance of Icterohaemorrhagiae, Javanica, Australis, Hurstbridge, and Pyrogenes serogroup anti-leptospiral antibodies in the studied region. The Chi-squared test revealed that the presence of anti-leptospiral antibodies is significantly not independent (associated) across the administrative division (Chi-square=105.80, p<0.05) as well as for sheep (Chi-square=34.67, p<0.01) and goats (Chi-square=68.78, p<0.01). Among seropositive samples (n=462 reactors), the MAT was positive for more than one serovar in 73% of sheep (95/131) and 53% of goats (177/331), representing an overall 59% cross-reactive prevalence in small ruminants. The determined frequency distribution (varied among small ruminants) of the employed serovars representing major reactive serogroup was Icterohaemorrhagiae (29.87), Javanica (20.78), Australis (20.35), Hurstbridge (16.23), Pyrogenes (15.8), Djasmin (15.58), Bataviae (15.37), Autumnalis (14.5), Canicola (14.5), Hebdomadis (14.07), Shermani (13.64), Panama (13.42), Sejroe (12.77), etc. Conclusion: This study indicates alarmingly high seroprevalence of leptospirosis in small ruminants with existing endemicity in the studied region in South Peninsular India. Further, these prevalent serovars in the administrative division may be of use in the reference panels of antigens in the MAT in both humans and animal disease diagnostic laboratories for effective and timely diagnosis of leptospirosis and to combat the challenges in public health. In this retrospective study, we determined the incidence, serovars, and antibiogram of Vibrio cholerae isolated from 102 clinical stool samples collected from rice water diarrheic patients during an outbreak (May - July 2017) in Ilorin metropolis, Nigeria. The culture positive rate of the V. cholerae isolates was 41.2%, with 41 and 1 isolates from O1 (Inaba) and non-O1/O139 serogroups, respectively. The isolates were the most susceptible to ciprofloxacin (76.2%) followed by amoxicillin-clavulanate (71.4%). However, all isolates were resistant to ampicillin and tetracycline. Leptospirosis is a zoonotic infectious disease prevalent in the tropics caused by the pathogenic spirochaetes of the genus Leptospira. Dogs act as reservoir host for Leptospira species and can transmit the infection to humans especially dog owners. A study was conducted in Thrissur, Ernakulam and Palakkad districts of Kerala to find out the occurrence of leptospirosis among suspected and healthy dogs. The results of the study revealed that 4.82 per cent of the samples were found positive based on Dark Field Microscopy. District-wise occurrence of Leptospirosis by Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) was found to be 2.22 per cent, 4.61 per cent and 18.88 per cent in Ernakulam, Palakkad and Thrissur districts respectively. Objective. This study aimed to describe Salmonella epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance in Greek children over the period of 2011-2017. Materials and Methods. A 7-year retrospective study (2011-2017) was performed, based on data recorded by the National Reference Centre for Salmonella, among children aged =14 years. Epidemiological data, serovar distribution and antimicrobial resistance patterns were recorded. Results. Overall, 2347 Salmonella isolates were collected (27 typhoidparatyphoid). Salmonellosis cases increased by almost 2-fold in 2017 compared to 2011. The highest rates were reported in August, with infants being the most vulnerable group (17.9%). The majority of isolates were identified in stool samples (91%). Boys slightly outnumbered girls (~1.05:1). Salmonella Enteritidis was the most prevalent serovar (28.5%), followed by Salmonella Typhimurium (12.2%) and Salmonella monophasic Typhimurium (10.4%). Non-typhoid isolates displayed low resistance rates to 3rd generation cephalosporins (1%) and ciprofloxacin (0.3%), while the corresponding resistance of typhoid isolates was 10% and 5% respectively. An increasing trend of Salmonella monophasic Typhimurium was recorded, associated with high rates of multidrug resistance, reaching a percentage of 97.8% in 2017. Conclusions. Salmonellosis epidemiology in Greek children is comparable to previously published European data. Antimicrobial resistance rates to 3rd-generation cephalosporins and ciprofloxacin for non-typhoid and typhoid-paratyphoid remain low. Cloacal swabs from 45 Grenada bank tree boas (Corallus grenadensis) were sampled during a 12‐month period (2011–2012) from the rain forests and scrublands of Grenada. Cloacal swabs were examined by enrichment and selective culture for the presence of Salmonella spp. In all, 16 (35.6%) of the snakes were positive for Salmonella, and six serovars of Salmonella were isolated. The most common serovar was Rubislaw (31.3%), the most frequent serovar recently isolated from green iguanas in Grenada, followed by serovar Braenderup (18.8%), and serovar IV:48:g,z51:‐ (formerly, S. Marina) (18.8%), also found in green iguanas in this country. The remaining three less frequent serovars were, IV:53:g,z51:‐, I:6,7:e,h:‐ and IIIb:38:i:z. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests conducted by a disc diffusion method against amoxicillin–clavulanic acid, ampicillin, cefotaxime, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, gentamicin, imipenem, nalidixic acid, streptomycin, tetracycline and trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole showed that drug resistance is minimal, with intermediate susceptibility, only to streptomycin. This is the first report of isolation and antimicrobial susceptibilities of Salmonella serovars from wild Grenadian tree boas. This study aimed to determine the frequency of contamination, serovar diversity, and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) of Salmonella enterica (SE) in lymph nodes and ground beef. A total of 1,545 samples from 400 beef carcasses were analyzed. Samples included peripheral (PLN) and deep lymph nodes (DLN), lean and fatty ground beef obtained in warm (April-July) and cold (September-December) seasons during 2017 and 2018. The pure isolates were subjected to complete genome sequencing. With these data, the in silico prediction of serovars and the MLST profile was performed. In total, 78 SE isolates were obtained (5% of the total analyzed samples). The frequency of contamination was associated with the type of sample (X2=23.7, P<0.0001) and the time of year (X2=20.3, P<0.0001), being higher in PLN (9.7%) and during the warm season (7.0%). The predominant serovars were Anatum and Reading (each one with n= 23), Typhimurium (n= 11), and London (n= 9). The MLST profile of strains of the Typhimurium (ST 19 and 34) and Kentucky (ST 198) serovars has been previously reported in isolates involved in clinical cases. It was concluded that lymph nodes and ground beef are reservoirs of SE of public health importance, especially during the warm months of the year. A sample, composed of 1 820 sera from pigs previously researched by the microscopic agglutination test and the data corresponding to 141 human patients positive to indirect haemagglutination, was used to evaluate the correlation between human and pig reactors to Leptospira spp. for a decade in Camagüey province, Cuba. The variables analyzed were worked pig samples, pig reactors, human reactors, pig reactors/worked samples and pig reactors/human reactors. The Spearman's correlation was used to establish the relationship between pig and human reactors. Eight hundred and seventy-six pig samples resulted reactors to Leptospira spp. The pig reactor/human reactor ratio ranged from three to four. The correlation between pig and human reactors was highly significant. This constitutes an epidemiological alert, given the high number of pigs in urban and periurban areas of the city. Background: Ureaplasma spp. have been implicated in a variety of clinical conditions and certain serovars are likely to be disease-associated. Hence, the ascending trend of Ureaplasma spp. resistance to antimicrobials should deserve more attention. Here we assessed the extent of antimicrobial resistance of Ureaplasma serovars in Tunisia, and investigated the underlying molecular basis. Methods: This study included 101 molecularly typed Ureaplasma spp. clinical strains isolated over a 12-year time period (2005–2017). The antimicrobial susceptibility was tested against nine antibacterial agents using the broth microdilution method. Neighbor-joining tree was constructed to establish the phylogenetic relationships among isolates. Results: We found that all ureaplasma isolates were resistant to ciprofloxacin and erythromycin, intermediately resistant to azithromycin, and susceptible to doxycycline, moxifloxacin and josamycin. Ofloxacin and levofloxacin resistance was found in 73.27 and 17.82%, respectively, while 37.62% of isolates proved resistant to tetracycline. Consequently, we detected an elevated multidrug resistance rate among ureaplasma isolates (37.62%), particularly among serovars 2, 5, 8, and 9 (77.77% overall), as well as serovars 4, 10, 12, and 13 (52.63% overall). In most cases, drug resistance was found to be associated with known molecular mechanisms, yet we have identified two novel mutations in the L22 protein, which might be associated with macrolide-resistance. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first study that reports the widespread expansion of multidrug resistance among Ureaplasma serovars, a finding of importance in terms of both surveillance and antimicrobial usage. Canine leptospirosis disease has been suspected clinically and serologically in 50 tested dogs, living mainly in communities. The microagglutination test was performed using a battery of 21 leptospirosis antigens and has shown positive results in three dogs vaccinated against leptospirosis; the last booster being dated back to more than 6 months. Two dogs died and autopsied and one survived after treatment. Positive reactions were recorded towards the leptospirosis serovars: L. interrogans Copenhageni, L. interrogans Bratislava and L. borgpetersenii Hardjobovis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first description in North Africa of canine leptospirosis associated with these serovars in dogs. Poultry is a major Salmonella reservoir, but conventional culture-based methods typically identify the most abundant serovars while those less abundant remain undetected. Choice of enrichment procedure also introduces bias, and for broiler carcasses, a 1-min rinse before preenrichment is insufficient to release all Salmonella present. The inability to assess serovar diversity means that serovars more often associated with human illness may be masked by more abundant Salmonella. CRISPR-SeroSeq (serotyping by sequencing clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats), an amplicon-based, next-generation sequencing tool, allows detection of multiple serovars and maps the relative serovar frequencies in a sample. To address the preceding limitations, CRISPR-SeroSeq was used on broiler carcasses collected prechilled at a commercial plant. Standard carcass rinse aliquot preenrichments and whole carcass preenrichments that were enriched in Rappaport-Vassiliadis (RV) and tetrathionate (TT) broths were compared. On average, five serovars were observed per carcass, including nine on one carcass. CRISPR-SeroSeq detected serovars comprising as little as 0.005% of the population. CRISPR-SeroSeq data matched (28 of 32) standard culture analysis for abundant serovars. Salmonella serovars Kentucky, Typhimurium, and Schwarzengrund were found on each carcass. Overall, serovar diversity was higher in whole carcass preenrichments that were enriched in RV (P < 0.05). Serovar Schwarzengrund was present at higher frequencies in whole carcass preenrichments compared with rinse aliquot preenrichments (t test, P < 0.05), suggesting it adheres more strongly to the carcass. Salmonella serovar Enteritidis was enriched eightfold more in TT than in RV, and serovars Schwarzengrund and Reading were preferentially enriched in RV. Comparison of preenriched and enriched samples suggests that selective enrichment in RV or TT was inhibitory to some serovars. This article addresses limitations of Salmonella surveillance protocols and provides information related to Salmonella population dynamics. Salmonella spp. is one of the most important foodborne pathogens and the third leading cause of human death among diarrheal diseases worldwide. Animals are the primary source of this pathogen, and animal-based foods are the main transmission route to humans. Thus, understanding the global epidemiology of Salmonella serovars is key to control and monitor this bacterium. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and diversity of Salmonella enterica serovars in animal-based foods (beef, pork, poultry, and seafood) throughout the five continents [Africa, Americas (North and Latin America), Asia, Europe, and Oceania]. The meta-analysis consisted of a chemometric assessment (Hierarchical Cluster Analysis and Principal Component Analysis) to identify the main epidemiological findings, including the prevalence and diversity of the Salmonella serovars in each matrix. Regarding the serovar distribution, Typhimurium serovar presented a cosmopolitan distribution, reported in all four assessed matrices and continents; poultry continues to play a central role in the dissemination of the Enteritidis serovar to humans and, Anatum and Weltevreden were the most frequently in beef and seafood, respectively. Additionally, we recommended careful monitoring of certain serovars, such as Derby, Agona, Infantis, and Kentucky. Finally, given the scientific data regarding the most frequently reported serovars and which matrices constitute the main vehicles for the transmission of this pathogen, control programs may be improved, and specific interventions may be implemented in an attempt to reduce the risk of this pathogen reaching humans. Salmonella spp. is a major food-borne bacterial pathogen, with chicken meat and egg products being the main reservoirs of infection to humans. In this study, a total of 2,040 chicken eggs were randomly collected from the major public wet markets of the 17 municipalities and cities of Metro Manila, Philippines to determine the level and distribution of Salmonella spp. in chicken eggs in the region. Of the 102 pooled egg samples (20 eggs/pool) tested, no Salmonellae were isolated from internal egg contents while 13 pooled shell egg samples were Salmonella-positive, yielding an egg isolation rate of 1.27-25.49%. Salmonella-positive samples were obtained from 11 of the 17 public wet markets examined. Based on egg sizes, isolation rates of 0.29-5.88% (small), 2.64-52.94% (medium) and 0.88-17.65% (large) shell eggs were observed. Genetic characterization using panels of multiplex PCR assays showed that the major serogroups detected were B (23.08%), C1 (15.38%), C2 (15.38%) and E1 (7.69%). The most prevalent serovars identified were S. Mbandaka S. Braenderup, S. Anatum, S. Heidelburg, S. Paratyphi B and S. Livingstone (7.69%); and S. Newport (15.38%). Data on Salmonella contamination in the Philippines will be valuable in benchmarking studies and formulation of more efficient strategies to improve the quality and safety of local egg products for domestic consumption, food processing and exports. Summary: As Salmonella enterica is an important pathogen of food animals, surveillance programmes for S. enterica serovars have existed for many years in the United States. Surveillance programmes serve many purposes, one of which is to evaluate alterations in the prevalence of serovars that may signal changes in the ecology of the target organism. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate changes in the proportion of S. enterica serovars isolated from swine over a near 20‐year observation period (1997–2015) using four longitudinal data sets from different food animal species. The secondary aim was to evaluate correlations between changes in S. enterica serovars frequently recovered from food animals and changes in S. enterica serovars associated with disease in humans. We found decreasing proportions of S. enterica serovar Typhimurium, serovar Derby and serovar Heidelberg and increasing proportions of S. enterica serovar 4,[5],12:i:‐, serovar Infantis and serovar Johannesburg in swine over time. We also found positive correlations for the yearly changes in S. enterica serovar 4,[5],12:i:‐, serovar Anatum and serovar Johannesburg between swine and human data; in S. enterica Worthington between avian and human data; and in S. enterica serovar 4,[5],12:i:‐ between bovine and human data. Problems with serological cross-reactivity have led to development of a number of PCRs (individual and multiplex) for molecular typing of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae , the causative agent of porcine pleuropneumonia. Most of these assays were developed for detection of specific amplicons within capsule biosynthetic genes before the availability of complete sequences for the different serovars. Here we describe comparative analysis of the complete capsular loci for all 18 serovars of A. pleuropneumoniae , and development of two multiplex PCRs for comprehensive capsule typing of this important pig pathogen. This systematic review summarises the data published on the Leptospira seroprevalence, serovar diversity and distribution among animal species in the Caribbean region. Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, and checklist, relevant articles were identified and data were extracted and recorded. The review provided Leptospira seroprevalence data from 16 Caribbean islands (Barbados, Trinidad, Grenada, Puerto Rico, Saint Croix, St. Kitts and Nevis, Jamaica, Antigua, Carriacou, Dominica, Guadalupe, Martinique, Monserrat, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, and St. Vincent) in a variety of animal species. Reviewing the literature highlighted the limited amount of data available from limited number of islands. Many of the studies conducted have recorded seroprevalences based on variable and small samples sizes. Besides, serovar panels used for MAT were not consistent between studies. The review indicates that the Leptospira exposure in a given geographic location may change with time and climatic and environmental conditions, and highlights the need to conduct continual surveillance in tropical countries where the climate supports the survival of Leptospira in the environment. Specific attention must be given to standardization of MAT panels and protocols and providing training across laboratories involved in testing. Further, animal and environment testing to isolate and identify circulating Leptospira spp. in a geographic region must actively be pursued. This knowledge is important to implement geographically specific control programs, as risk factors of Leptospira transmission is favoured by various factors such as change in climatic conditions, urbanization, encroachment of wildlife inhabitation, import/export of animals, increase in adventure travel, and water related recreational activities. Abstract: Non‐typhoidal salmonellosis remains an important public health problem worldwide. Dogs may harbour Salmonella in their intestines and can easily shed Salmonella in the environment with the possibility of transmission to humans. Thus, monitoring is essential to understand the role of dogs in zoonotic transmission. The objectives of this study were to determine the shedding of Salmonella by owned, apparently healthy dogs in Grenada, West Indies, to identify the serovars, and to examine their antimicrobial susceptibility profiles. Faecal samples collected during August to October, 2016 from 144 non‐diarrhoeic owned dogs were examined by enrichment and selective culture for the presence of Salmonella spp. Eight (5.6%) of the tested animals were culture positive, yielding 35 Salmonella isolates that belonged to six serovars of Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica. These were serovars Arechavaleta from two dogs, Arechavaleta and Montevideo from one dog, and Javiana, Rubislaw, Braenderup and Kiambu from one dog each. All these serovars have been reported as causes of human salmonellosis globally. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests on 35 isolates showed absence of resistance to the currently used drugs for cases of human salmonellosis, including ciprofloxacin and cefotaxime. One isolate (2.9%) was resistant to neomycin, two isolates (5.7%) showed intermediate susceptibility to neomycin, and another (2.9%) had intermediate susceptibility to tetracycline. This is the first report of isolation and antimicrobial susceptibilities of non‐typhoidal Salmonella serovars from dogs in Grenada. High-pressure processing is a nonthermal method of food preservation that uses pressure to inactivate microorganisms. To ensure the effective validation of process parameters, it is important that the design of challenge protocols consider the potential for resistance in a particular species. Herein, the responses of 99 diverse Salmonella enterica strains to high pressure are reported. Members of this population belonged to 24 serovars and were isolated from various Canadian sources over a period of 26 years. When cells were exposed to 600 MPa for 3 min, the average reduction in cell numbers for this population was 5.6 log10 CFU/ml, with a range of 0.9 log10 CFU/ml to 6 log10 CFU/ml. Eleven strains, from 5 serovars, with variable levels of pressure resistance were selected for further study. The membrane characteristics (propidium iodide uptake during and after pressure treatment, sensitivity to membrane-active agents, and membrane fatty acid composition) and responses to stressors (heat, nutrient deprivation, desiccation, and acid) for this panel suggested potential roles for the cell membrane and the RpoS regulon in mediating pressure resistance in S. enterica. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of domesticated animals, particularly pigs, as reservoirs of leptospirosis in the province of Camaguey. The sera from 2 617 equines, 1 820 pigs, 75 ovines and caprine, and 69 canines in Camaguey were analyzed by microagglutination. Serovars Icterohaemorrhagiae, Canicola, Ballum, Australis, Pomona and Tarassovi were used as antigens for horses, pigs and dogs; whereas Icterohaemorrhagiae, Canicola, Ballum, Pomona, Hebdomadis and Sejroe were used for bovines and ovine-caprine. The variable studied was reactor proportion per species. The inclusion of Hardjo, Bratislava, Sejroe and Grippotyphosa for serum screenings in swine contributed to better understanding of the species as reservoir of Leptospirosis in the province. A multiplex PCR was developed to identify the two most common serovars of Salmonella causing foodborne illness in Canada, namely, serovars Enteritidis and Typhimurium. The PCR was designed to amplify DNA fragments from four Salmonella genes, namely, invA gene (211-bp fragment), iroB gene (309-bp fragment), Typhimurium STM 4497 (523-bp fragment), and Enteritidis SE147228 (612-bp fragment). In addition, a 1,026-bp ribosomal DNA (rDNA) fragment universally present in bacterial species was included in the assay as an internal control fragment. The detection rate of the PCR was 100% among Salmonella Enteritidis (n = 92) and Salmonella Typhimurium (n = 33) isolates. All tested Salmonella isolates (n = 194) were successfully identified based on the amplification of at least one Salmonella -specific DNA fragment. None of the four Salmonella DNA amplicons were detected in any of the non- Salmonella isolates (n = 126), indicating an exclusivity rate of 100%. When applied to crude extracts of 2,001 field isolates of Salmonella obtained during the course of a national microbiological baseline study in broiler chickens and chicken products sampled from abattoir and retail outlets, 163 isolates, or 8.1%, tested positive for Salmonella Enteritidis and another 80 isolates, or 4.0%, tested as Salmonella Typhimurium. All isolates identified by serological testing as Salmonella Enteritidis in the microbiological study were also identified by using the multiplex PCR. The new test can be used to identify or confirm pure isolates of the two serovars and is also amenable for integration into existing culture procedures for accurate detection of Salmonella colonies. Introduction: Salmonellosis is one of the most common foodborne diseases worldwide. The irrational use of antibiotics in medicine and in animal feed has greatly promoted the emergence and spread of resistant strains of non-typhoidal Salmonella. Methodology: A total of 464 food products were collected in Tetouan from January 2010 to December 2012. The isolation and identification of Salmonella were performed according to Moroccan standard 08.0.116. All isolates were serotyped and were then tested for antibiotic resistance using the disk diffusion method. Results: The microbiological analysis showed that 10.3% of food samples were contaminated with Salmonella. Eleven serotypes were identified: Kentucky 22.9% (11/48), Agona 16.7% (8/48), Reading 12.5% (6/48), Corvallis 8.3% (4/48), Saintpaul 8.3% (4/48), Typhimurium 6.2% (3/48), Montevideo 6.2% (3/48), Enteritidis 4.2% (2/48), and 2% (1/48) for each of Israel, Hadar, and Branderup. Drug susceptibility testing showed that 39.6% of Salmonella were resistant to at least one antibiotic and 60.4% were susceptible to all tested antibiotics. The highest percentage of resistance was found to the following antimicrobial agents: nalidixic acid (27.1%), sulfonamides (25%), amoxicillin (12.5%), amoxicillin/clavulanic acid 12.5%, trimethoprim (10.4%), cephalothin (4.2%), and chloramphenicol (2.1%). Conclusions: This study revealed a relatively high prevalence of Salmonella in food products in Tetouan and a large percentage of drug-resistant strains. Hygienic measures should be rigorously implemented, and monitoring resistance of Salmonella is required to reduce the risks related to the emergence of multi-resistant bacteria. Salmonella species are Gram-negative bacteria with more than 2600 serovars. Among these serovars, many are associated with various diseases in livestock and humans. White Kauffman Le-Minor (WKL) serotyping scheme applies specific serum to determine the serovars of Salmonella. Recent studies have applied molecular methods for serovar predictions. These methods include PCR, hybridization and sequence data to detect/predict serovar-specific genetic elements. Among these, PCR is a robust method if the unique genetic element is already known. Within this context, also involving novel primers, two multiplex PCR assays were standardized to detect six important Salmonella serovars viz. Typhimurium, Enteritidis, Kentucky, Infantis, Virchow and Gallinarum associated with poultry in India. The developed PCR assays showed targeted serovar specificity. Serial dilution experiments of both kit-based and crude lysate DNA preparations indicated similar applicability of both methods for testing from pure cultures. Further the developed assays were validated with 25 recent field isolates to confirm the applicability in routine diagnosis. The PCR assay could predict all the targeted serovars (17/25) with 100% specificity (CI-95%; 0.63–1). Molecular serotyping can reduce the number of serum used in comparison to the conventional serotyping which involves more random application of serum. This study aims to determine the prevalence of fluoroquinolone resistance of Ureaplasma biovars and serovars isolated from urogenital clinical samples and determine the underlying molecular mechanism for quinolone resistance for all resistant isolates. Of 105 samples confirmed as positive for U . urealyticum / U . parvum , 85 were resistant to quinolones by the Mycoplasma–IST2 kit. However, only 43 out of 85 quinolone resistant isolates had amino acid substitutions in GyrA, GyrB, ParC and ParE proteins underlining that this assay have mis-identified as fluoroquinolone resistant 42 isolates. The known ParC E87K and ParC S83L mutations were found in 1 and 10 isolates, respectively. An original mutation of ureaplasmal ParC (E87Q, 1 isolate) was found. Furthermore, we found a ParE R448K mutation in one isolate, already described. Among the additional alterations detected, the most prevalent mutation found was L176F in GyrA protein in 18 isolates with single infection and in 3 isolates with mixed ureaplasma infections. Mutations in GyrB (E502Q, 4 isolates), ParE (Q412K, Q412P, Q412T, 3 independent isolates), whose role is unknown, were also found. Other sporadic mutations in the four genes were identified. This investigation is the result of monitoring the data for molecular fluoroquinone resistance in Ureaplasma spp. in Italy. Most leptospiral infections in horses are asymptomatic; however, acute disease manifestations as well as reproductive failure and recurrent uveitis have been reported. In South Africa, the epidemiology of the disease in horses is not well documented. A serosurvey to determine what serovars were present in horses from Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape Provinces and to get an estimate of the seroprevalence of leptospirosis was carried out from January 2013 until April 2014 with the assistance of four large equine hospitals located in these provinces. Furthermore, associations between potential risk factors and both seropositive horses to the predominant serovar Bratislava and to Leptospira spp. were statistically evaluated using univariate analysis and multivariable logistic regression models. A total of 663 horse sera were collected and tested against a panel of 24 leptospiral serovars using the microscopic agglutination test. The most predominant serovars in Gauteng were Bratislava [32%, 95% CI: 29–35%]; Djasiman [10.4%, 95% CI: 8–12%] and Arborea [8.9%, 95% CI: 7–11%], in the Western Cape Province, Bratislava [27.35%, 95% CI: 23–32]; Djasiman [15.4%, 95% CI: 12–19%] and Arborea [14.5%, 95% CI: 11–18%] and in KwaZulu-Natal, Bratislava [39.4%, 95% CI: 34–44%]; Arborea [9.6%, 95% CI: 7–13%]; and Tarassovi [7.7%, 95% CI: 5–10%] respectively. Twenty one serovars representing 17 serogroups were detected with serovar Bratislava being the most serodominant. The apparent prevalence to one or more serovars of Leptospira spp. at a serum dilution of 1:100 in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape Provinces were 49%; 37% and 32% respectively. The true prevalence was calculated for each province taking into account the clustering effect during the sampling and was found to be between 24 and 74% in Gauteng; 26–39% in the Western Cape and 20–54% in KwaZulu-Natal. Nooitgedacht (South African horse breed) horses were found to be at greater risk of being seropositive to both serovar Bratislava (OR = 5.08) and Leptospira spp. (OR = 6.3). Similarly, horses residing on properties with forestry in the vicinity were found to be at greater risk of being seropositive to both serovar Bratislava (OR = 9.3) and Leptospira spp. (OR = 5.2). This study has shown that a high proportion of horses in South Africa are exposed to a wide range of serovars, inferring a complex epidemiology. Increases in foodborne disease outbreaks associated with fresh produce have necessitated the need to identify potential sources of microbial contamination in produce and agricultural environments. The present study evaluated Salmonella prevalence and serovar diversity in fruit (225), water (140) and surface (126) samples, from three commercial farms and associated packhouses, located in different farming regions in South Africa. Fruit and water samples were collected from both orchards and packhouses, while surface samples were collected from conveyer belts and hands of packhouse employees. Salmonella was detected in 26 of the 491 (5.3%) samples. Environmental samples (water and surfaces) recorded a slightly higher proportion (3.1%; 15/491) of positive samples compared to fruit samples (2.2%; 11/491). Salmonella was not detected on employee hands and river water samples. A total of 263 Salmonella isolates were obtained from the 26 positive samples by standard culture methods, preliminarily identified through matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation-time of flight mass spectroscopy (MALDI-TOF MS) and API 20E, and confirmed by invA gene. Of the 39 representative isolates serotyped the serovars Muenchen (33.3%), Typhimurium (30.8%), Heidelberg (20.5%), Bsilla (7.7%), Salmonella subspecies IIb: 17: r: z (5.1%) and one untypable strain were identified. Most samples had multiple serovars with orchard water form one site recording the highest serovar diversity (4 serovars). Salmonella is a Gram-negative bacterium responsible for salmonellosis, a disease transmitted by the consumption of contaminated poultry products such as eggs and raw chicken meat. The Salmonella serovars present on the surface of eggs marketed in Ibague city are currently unknown. To address this issue, an observational crosssectional study was designed to estimate Salmonella spp. prevalence on the surface of eggs sold in Ibague city from January - August 2014. A total of 1,705 eggs were collected from stores and supermarkets, and 341 samples (pools of five eggs each) were processed for Salmonella spp. isolation, followed by serotyping and typing by multiple PCR. Salmonella spp. prevalence in egg surface was 2.93%, and S. Enteritidis and S. Paratyphi B were the main serotypes present. S. Enteritidis and S. Paratyphi B were correctly identified by three multiplex PCR directed to amplifly the rfB and wzX, fliC and fljB genes for serogroup and serovar identification, respectively. The frequency of cleaning and disinfection (OR= 19,8), the presence of long nails (OR=5,46) and storage temperature (OR=10,05) were identified as potential risk factors for Salmonella spp. contamination at the market place. It is concluded that S. Enteritidis and S. Paratyphi B, two potential human pathogens, were isolated from the surface of eggs marketed in Ibague city, and multiplex PCR-based typing correlated well with the conventional serotyping in identifying those serovars. Aquaculture products can become sources of Salmonella by exposure to contaminated water or through processing practices, thus representing a public health hazard. A study was conducted on Salmonella contamination in aquaculture products sampled from marketplaces and retailers in Shanghai, China. A total of 730 samples (including fish, shellfish, bullfrog, clam, shrimp and others) were obtained from 2006 to 2011. Among them, 217 (29.7%) were positive for Salmonella . Thirty-eight serovars were identified in the 217 Salmonella isolates. The most prevalent were Salmonella Aberdeen (18.4%), S. Wandsworth (12.0%), S . Thompson (9.2%), S . Singapore (5.5%), S . Stanley (4.6%), S . Schwarzengrund (4.6%), S . Hvittingfoss (4.1%) and S . Typhimurium (4.1%). Many resistant isolates were detected, with 69.6% resistant to at least one antimicrobial drug. We observed high resistance to sulfonamides (56.5%), tetracycline (34.1%), streptomycin (28.6%), ampicillin (23.5%) and nalidixic acid (21.2%). Lower levels of resistance were found for gentamicin (3.2%), ciprofloxacin (2.3%), ceftiofur (1.3%), cefotaxime (0.9%), ceftazidime (0.5%) and cefepime (0.5%). A total of 43.3% of the Salmonella isolates were multidrug-resistant and 44 different resistance patterns were found. This study provided data on the prevalence, serovars and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella from retail aquaculture products in Shanghai, and indicated the need for monitoring programs for microbiologic safety in such projects and for more prudent drug use in aquaculture production in order to reduce the risk of development and spread of antimicrobial resistance. Objective. To evaluate if the use of the 19 Leptospira strains panel suggested by the International Leptospirosis Society of World Health Organization for microagglutination allows confirmation of more cases that the 12 strains panel used in Argentina. Materials and methods. Cross-sectional observational study. We studied 441 serum samples corresponding to Argentinean patients with suspected leptospirosis derived during from July to December, 2009 and from January to October, 2013. Results. The same number of positive samples was obtained using the MAT with the 19 or 12 strains. In six cases a serovar of the expanded collection was presumably infecting, but always coagglutinated with strains of the reduced panel. Conclusion. In Argentina, the diagnosis of leptospirosis by MAT could be made using the reduced 12 strains panel, obtaining the same result in case detection as using the 19 strains panel. This study was aimed at determining virulence-associated genes among Haemophilus parasuis ( H. parasuis ) strains, and supplying for the Kielstein–Rapp–Gabrielson serotyping scheme. The subtractive fragments, obtained through suppression subtractive hybridization and reverse Southern blot hybridization, were found to encode genes representative of 7 different functions. PCR was used to investigate the distribution of these fragments in H. parasuis strains isolated from different infection sites in pigs. Mice challenge was then used to analyze the correlationship between subtractive fragments, infection sites and bacterial virulence. Eight weeks old female BALB/c mice (10 mice/group) were inoculated intraperitoneally with 3.0 × 10 9 CFU suspension (0.5 ml/mouse) of H. parasuis strains in PBS. Results indicated that H. parasuis possessed varied virulence even among the same serovar strains. Transcription units hsdR, hsdS, gpT and ompP2, identified from the subtractive fragments, were uniformly expressed in highly virulent strains, while absent in weakly virulent strains, and demonstrated variable degrees of expression in moderately virulent strains. Moreover, H. parasuis strains, isolated from pericardium and heart blood, were all highly virulent strains, while from nasal cavity and joint were moderately or weakly virulent strains. This study indicated that fragments hsdR, hsdS, gpT and ompP2 were associated with the virulence of H. parasuis . The virulence of H. parasuis strains isolated from different infection sites was different. Cloacal swabs from 62 green iguanas ( Iguana iguana), including 47 wild and 15 domestic ones from five parishes of Grenada, were sampled during a 4-month period of January to April 2013 and examined by enrichment and selective culture for the presence of Salmonella spp. Fifty-five per cent of the animals were positive, and eight serovars of Salmonella were isolated. The most common serovar was Rubislaw (58.8%), a serovar found recently in many cane toads in Grenada, followed by Oranienburg (14.7%), a serovar that has been causing serious human disease outbreaks in Japan. Serovar IV:48:g,z51:- (formerly, S. Marina) highly invasive and known for serious infections in children in the United States, constituted 11.8% of the isolates, all of them being from domestic green iguanas. Salmonella Newport, a serovar recently found in a blue land crab in Grenada, comprised 11.8% of the isolates from the green iguanas. The remaining four less frequent serovars included S. Javiana and S. Glostrup. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests conducted by a disc diffusion method against amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, ampicillin, cefotaxime, ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, gentamicin, nalidixic acid, streptomycin, tetracycline and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole showed that drug resistance is minimal, with intermediate susceptibility, mainly to streptomycin, tetracycline and cefotaxime. This supplement (no. 48) of the White–Kauffmann–Le Minor scheme reports on the characterization of 63 new Salmonella serovars and 25 new variants of previously described Salmonella serovars recognized by the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Salmonella between 2008 and 2010. Forty-four new serovars were assigned to Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica , 12 to subspecies salamae , two to subspecies arizonae , two to subspecies diarizonae and three to subspecies houtenae . Abstract: In this work the prevalence and serovar diversity of Salmonella in various food products including non-thermally processed food and ready-to-eat (RTE) food in Estonia in 2008–2012 are summarized. The findings demonstrate that the overall prevalence of Salmonella in these food categories was low. A total of 260 (0.54%) of 47,927 food samples were found to be positive for Salmonella, the overall prevalence in non-thermally processed food was 0.81% (256/31,576) and in RTE products only 0.02% (4/16,351). Salmonella was most often isolated from raw eggs and products thereof (2.17%, 5/230), followed by raw meat products (0.95%, 207/21,723), RTE mayonnaises (0.90%, 2/221) and raw meat (0.89%, 38/4252). In the raw meat category, Salmonella was most frequently isolated from turkey meat (6.96%, 11 positive samples out of 158), broiler chicken meat (4.00%, 7/175) and from layer hen meat (2.22%, 11/496). Salmonella was isolated in lesser extent from meat preparations (1.91%, 82/4292), minced meat and mechanically separated meat products (0.97%, 100/10,344) and from raw sausages (0.35%, 25/7087). Altogether 24 different serovars were identified among the 260 Salmonella positive samples. Salmonella Typhimurium was the most frequent serovar (26.90% of the positive samples) and it was isolated most commonly in raw food products. The next most frequent serovars were Salmonella Derby (17.50%), Salmonella Enteritidis (8.37%) and Salmonella Newport (7.57%). Abstract: The aims of this study were to investigate the serotype distribution, genetic relationships and antibiotic resistance of Salmonella from food-producing animals in Shandong province of China in 2009 and 2012. A total of 362 out of 1825 samples from chickens, 53 out of 445 samples from ducks, and 50 out of 692 samples from pigs were positive for Salmonella. Isolates were subjected to serotyping, antibiotic susceptibility testing (15 antibiotics) and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The most common serotypes recovered in the chicken samples were Enteritidis (n=294, 81.2%) and Indiana (n=45, 12.4%). For ducks, Cremieu (n=25, 47.2%), Indiana (n=13, 24.5%) and Typhimurium (n=9, 17%) were frequently isolated. In the pig samples, Derby (n=29, 58%), Typhimurium (n=9, 18%), and Enteritidis (n=6, 12%) were the most common serovars. PFGE results indicated that clonal dissemination of each serovar was prevalent, and that the Salmonella found on the poultry carcasses was caused by cross-contamination in the abattoirs. More than 99% of the Salmonella isolates collected were resistant to at least one antibiotic. The Salmonella resistance rates for 15 antibiotics in 2012 were significantly higher than those in 2009. In 2012, the highest resistance was to nalidixic acid (95.9%), followed by sulphafurazole (78.2%) and ampicillin (72.3%); the lowest levels of resistance were to kanamycin (40.1%) and amikacin (38.7%). Additionally, 41.5% and 42.2% of the Salmonella were resistant to ciprofloxacin and ceftiofur, respectively. Noticeably, 25% of the serovar Enteritidis and all of the serovar Indiana were resistant to at least 10 antibiotics in 2012. Salmonella is an essential food-borne pathogenic microorganism. Humans could get infected by consuming of Salmonella -contaminated foods, especially contaminated meat. In this study, a total of 580 retail meat samples (280 pork, 240 chicken, and 60 goose) were collected from slaughterhouses in Hangzhou to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Salmonella. Isolates were characterized by serotyping, PFGE (Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis), Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and antibiotic susceptibility testing. The rates of Salmonella -positive pork, chicken, and goose samples were 21.1% (n = 59), 10.4% (n = 25) and 10.0% (n = 6), respectively. The prevalence of Salmonella was 15.5% in slaughterhouses. Thirteen different Salmonella serovars were identified, and 6 isolates could not be identified. The most commonly prevalent serovars are Salmonella Rissen (S. Rissen) (n = 20, 22.2%), S. Derby (n = 16, 17.8%) and S. Typhimurium (n = 12, 13.3%). The detection rate of the remaining serovars ranged from 1.1%–11.11%. All Derby, Corvallis, and Kentucky strains were from pork. Seventy-two isolates (80.0%) showed drug resistance (DR) to at least one antibiotics, 19 (21.1%) were multi-drug resistant strains, 2 (2.2%) showed seven or more. The detection rate of Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole-resistance (70.0%) was highest, followed by Ampicillin (55.6%). Salmonella resistance was found related to serovar and origin. The positive rates of DR gene sul1 , sul2, sul3, class I integrons and bla TEM were 92.2%, 95.6%, 86.7%, 83.3% and 62.2%, respectively. Fifty-seven different PFGE patterns and 7 main clusters were obtained. Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease with a worldwide distribution, and occurs in tropical, subtropical and temperate zones. Considered to be the most geographically widespred zoono- sis. Leptospirosis has been recognized as an emerging global public health problem because of its increasing incidence in both developing a developed countries. More than 500,000 cases of severe leptospirosis are reported each year, with fatality rates exceeding 10%. The genus Leptospira comprises saprophytic and pathogenic species, isolated from wide range of animal reservoir species. Laboratory diagnosis is complex and not widely available, Selection of the right specimens, tests and correct interpretation of test results are important parameters to provide better patient care. Novel Bacillus thuringiensis isolates GS4, GN24 and UP1 were isolated and characterized by determination of serotyping, insecticidal protein by SDS-PAGE, plasmid composition, cry gene content and insect toxicity. Serologically two isolates GS4 and UP1 were allocated to the H3abce which is a new serovar while isolate GN24 was of H3ab type. Isolate GS4 produced flat crystal inclusions while UP1 produced cuboidal crystals. PCR analysis found that both isolates contained cry1 and cry1Ac genes. The major protein bands found of isolate GS4 were of molecular weights 175, 135, 97, 88, 66, 54 and 27 kDa, isolate UP1 were of 85, 60 and 40 kDa and isolate GN24 were of 130, 90, 66 and 45 kDa. Though isolates GS4 and UP1 belonged to a new serovar H3abce, they showed different crystal inclusions and cry gene content. Isolate GS4 was toxic to lepidopteran insect larvae of Helicoverpa armigera but UP1 did not showed any toxicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A preliminary epidemiological study of Salmonella contamination in laying-hen flocks was carried out in the regions of Annaba and Eltarf, Algeria, from March to October 2008 and March to November 2009. Our objectives were (i) to estimate the prevalence of infection by Salmonella spp. in seven pooled samples during the hens'' laying period (ii) to identify the serotypes and antimicrobial resistance phenotypes of isolates, and (iii) to characterize the factors that may be related to Salmonella contamination in Algerian henhouses. For this purpose, 18 out of 22 operational laying-hen houses were sampled one to three times during these periods: once at the start of laying (pullets aged 22–31weeks), once in the middle of laying (47–60week) and once at the end of laying prior to depopulation (70–86week). The flocks''Salmonella status was assessed by collecting 2754 environmental samples that were analyzed according to the ISO 6579 method. The antibiotic resistance of Salmonella strains was tested as per the guidelines of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). The relationship between each potential risk factor and the Salmonella status of laying-hen flocks was evaluated by calculating the relative risk with 95% confidence intervals. Eight flocks tested positive for Salmonella spp., with a higher prevalence at the end of laying than at either the beginning or middle. Only 19 isolates were recovered from the 2754 samples analyzed and nine different serotypes identified. S. enteritidis (n=4) was the most prevalent serovar, along with S. Kentucky and S. Hadar (n=3), followed by S. Heidelberg, S. Manhattan and S. Virchow (n=2), whereas S. Dublin, S. Typhimurium and S. Albany were found only once. Thirteen isolates were resistant to at least one antimicrobial agent. Of these, six were resistant to at least three different antimicrobial classes. Salmonella serovar Kentucky isolates were resistant to fluoroquinolones with ciprofloxacin MIC≥8mg/L. Abstract: Salmonella is a leading cause of foodborne diseases and the role of ready-to-eat products including plant-derived food is increasingly recognized. The present survey reviewed recent literature on Salmonella-related outbreaks caused by spices and herbs and on the occurrence of Salmonella in these food matrices. Spices and herbs contaminated with Salmonella were responsible for a variety of foodborne outbreaks in Europe and North America. Identified serovars did often not belong to those predominating in human illness. Moreover, in different survey studies, Salmonella belonging to a broad diversity of serovars were found in a variety of spices and herbs. The proportion of Salmonella-positive samples ranged from 0% to 8.4%, albeit detection rates were rather low in most studies. Higher prevalence rates were often obtained with regard to a specific spice or herb type. Due to high desiccation tolerance, Salmonella can survive for an extended period of time in spices and dried herbs. Thus, by the use of untreated spices and herbs for production of foods not subjected to a heat treatment or for seasoning of ready-to-eat products, Salmonella might be introduced and in this way might pose a threat to consumers. Abstract: The presence of Listeria in three milk processing environments as a potential source of milk contamination was assessed. Swab samples (n = 210) taken from milk processing plants were examined. Sample sites included the milk processing equipment, besides areas handling raw and pasteurized milk. The USDA Listeria-selective enrichment procedure was used to process the samples. Forty one (19.52%) Listeria isolates were recovered. The isolates were further subjected to biochemical and genotypic characterization. Out of 41 isolates, 16 (7.62%) were confirmed as Listeria monocytogenes, 2 (0.95%) as L. ivanovii, 19 (9.05%) as L. innocua. 1 (0.48%) as L. seeligeri and 3 (1.43%) as L. grayi. All the L. monocytogenes isolates were positive for the hlyA gene. PCR based serotyping revealed all L. monocytogenes to be of 1/2a, 1/2c, 3a and 3c serovar group. AscI and ApaI restriction analysis yielded four PFGE clusters for 16 L. monocytogenes isolates obtained from raw milk collector, milk silos, buttermilk mixer, cheese and other milk product processor. No predominant PFGE cluster was observed among these L. monocytogenes isolates. The main sources of L. monocytogenes were found to be raw milk collector and milk silos. In the present study L. monocytogenes was isolated from milk and milk products processing plants which could cross-contaminate the processed products and may possess a potential threat to public health. Abstract: Prevention of Salmonella contamination of poultry products requires detailed knowledge of the main sources associated with its presence in the production system. The aims of this study were to determine the main sources of Salmonella contamination in broiler production during growing, to assess the risk factors for Salmonella contamination at the end of the rearing period and to determine the main serovars involved in broiler production systems in Eastern Spain. A total of 65 different broiler houses from different farms were sampled. Each house was sampled at different times during the rearing period. First, when the previous flock was taken to the slaughterhouse, samples of dust, surfaces and previous flock faeces were collected. After cleaning and disinfection (C&D), samples of dust and surfaces were also taken. On the first day of rearing, samples of water, bedding, farming boots, meconiums, delivery-box liners and feed were collected. During rearing, feed samples were taken directly from the truck and from feeders. On slaughter day, samples of dust, surfaces, water, feed and faeces were also collected. Finally, two days after slaughter, carriers (rodents, flies and beetles) were trapped. All samples collected were analysed according to (Annex D) and positive samples were serotyped in accordance with Kauffman–White–Le–Minor technique. Our results showed that all different types of samples collected were contaminated with Salmonella (prevalence ranged between 1.5% and 38.6%). The most contaminated samples related with poultry production were: delivery-box liners (32.0%), faeces samples (31.2%), dust samples (25.0%), farming boots (19.7%) and feed from feeders (16.0%). However, the most important risk factors for Salmonella contamination of the flocks at the end of the rearing period were Salmonella status of the house after cleaning and disinfection, Salmonella status of day-old chick flocks and feed from feeders. Twenty-one different serovars were isolated from the samples analysed. The most prevalent were in decreasing order: Salmonella Enteritidis (52.9%), S. Hadar (17.8%), S. Virchow (8.9%) and S. Ohio (5.4%). The study suggested that there are many sources for Salmonella contamination and persistence in broiler production.
