Purpose: The pin fin is applied into a Lamilloy cooling structure which is broadly used in the leading edge region of the modern gas turbine vane. The purpose of this paper is to investigate effects of the layout, diameter and shape of pin fins on the flow structure and heat transfer characteristics in a newly improved Lamilloy structure at the leading edge region of a turbine vane. Design/methodology/approach: A numerical method is applied to investigate effects of the layout, diameter and shape of pin fins on the flow structure and heat transfer characteristics in a newly improved Lamilloy structure at the leading edge of a turbine vane. The diverse locations of pin fins are Lp = 0.35, 0.5, 0.65. The diameter of the pin fins varies from 8 mm to 32 mm. Three different ratios of root to roof diameter for pin fins are also investigated, i.e. k = 0.5, 1, 2. The Reynolds number ranges from 10,000 and 50,000. Results of the flow structures, heat transfer on the target surface and pin fin surfaces, and friction factor are studied. Findings: The heat transfer on the pin fin surface gradually decreases and then increases as the location of the pin fins increases. Increasing the diameter of the pin fins causes the heat transfer on the pin fin surface to gradually increase, while a lower value of the friction factor occurs. Besides, the heat transfer on the pin fin surface at a small root diameter increases remarkably, but a slight heat transfer penalty is found at the target surface. It is also found that both the Reynolds analogy performance and the thermal performance are increased compared to the baseline whose diameter and normalized location of pin fins are set as 16 and 0.5 mm, respectively. Social implications: The models provide a basic theoretical study to deal with nonuniformity of the temperature field for the turbine vane leading edge. The investigation also provides a better understanding of the heat transfer and flow characteristics in the leading edge region of a modern turbine vane. Originality/value: This is a novel method to adopt pin fins into a Lamilloy cooling structure with curvature. It presents that the heat transfer of the pin fin surface in a pin-fin Lamilloy cooling structure with curvature can be significantly increased by changing the parameters of the pin fins which may lead to various flow behavior. In addition, the shape of the pin fin also shows great influence on the heat transfer and flow characteristics. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the optimal geometry parameters in a dimple/protrusion-pin finned channel with high thermal performance.Design/methodology/approach The BSL turbulence model is used to calculate the flow structure and heat transfer in a dimple/protrusion-pin finned channel. The optimization algorithm is set as Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II). The high Nusselt number and low friction factor are chosen as the optimization objectives. The pin fin diameter, dimple/protrusion diameter, dimple/protrusion location and dimple/protrusion depth are applied as the optimization variables. An in-house code is used to generate the geometry model and mesh. The commercial software Isight is used to perform the optimization process.Findings The results show that the Nusselt number and friction factor are sensitive to the geometry parameters. In a pin finned channel with a dimple, the Nusselt number is high at the rear part of the dimple, while it is low at the upstream of the dimple. A high dissipative function is found near the pin fin. In the protrusion channel, the Nusselt number is high at the leading edge of the protrusion. In addition, the protrusion induces a high pressure drop compared to the dimpled channel.Originality/value The originality of this paper is to optimize the geometry parameters in a pin finned channel with dimple/protrusion. Purpose: Because of the appreciable application of heat recovery systems for the increment of overall efficiency of micro gas turbines, promising evaluation and optimization are crucial. This paper aims to propose a multi-factor theoretical methodology for analysis, optimization and comparison of potential plate-fin recuperators incorporated into micro gas turbines. Energetic, exergetic, economic and environmental factors are covered. Design/methodology/approach: To demonstrate applicability and reliability of the methodology, detailed thermo-hydraulic analysis, sensitivity analysis and optimization are conducted on the recuperators with louver and offset-strip fins using a genetic algorithm. To assess the relationship between investment cost and profit for the recuperated systems, payback period (PBP), which incorporates all the factors is used as the universal objective function. To compare the performance of the recuperated and non-recuperated systems, exergy efficiency, exergy destruction and corresponding cost rate, fuel consumption and environmental damage cost rates, capital and operational cost rates and acquired profit rates are determined. Findings: Based on the results, optimal PBP of the louvered-fin recuperator (147 days) is slightly lower than that with offset-strip fins (153 days). The highest profit rate is acquired by reduction of exergy destruction cost rate and corresponding decrements for louver and offset-strip fins are 2.3 and 3.9 times compared to simple cycle, respectively. Originality/value: This mathematical study, for the first time, focuses on introducing a reliable methodology, which covers energetic, exergetic, economic and environmental points of view beneficial for design and selection of efficient plate-fin recuperators for micro gas turbine applications. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to enhance the thermal performance in the labyrinth channel by different ribs shape. The labyrinth channel is a relatively new cooling structure to decrease the temperature near the trailing region of gas turbine. Design/methodology/approach: Based on the geometric similarity, a simplified geometric model is used. The k − ω turbulence model is used to close the Navier–Stokes equations. Five rib shapes (one rectangular rib, two arched ribs and two trapezoid ribs) and five Reynolds numbers (10,000 to 50,000) are considered. The Nusselt number, flow structure and friction factor are analyzed. Findings: Nusselt number is tightly related to the rib shape in the labyrinth channel. The different shapes of the ribs result in different horseshoe vortex and wake region. In general, the arched rib brings the highest Nusselt number and friction factor. The Nusselt number is increased by 15.8 per cent compared to that of trapezoidal ribs. High Nusselt number is accompanied by the high friction factor in a labyrinth channels. The friction factor is increased by 64.6 per cent compared to rectangular ribs. However, the rib shape has a minor effect on the overall thermal performance. Practical implications: This study is useful to protect the trailing region of advanced gas turbine. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effect of thermal conductivity on gas turbine blades, and to investigate the contribution of different rib configurations to the heat flux and the film cooling effectiveness. Design/methodology/approach – The Renormalization Group (RNG) model with enhanced wall treatment was used for the turbulence modeling, and the SIMPLE algorithm was used to handle the pressure-velocity coupling. Findings – A flame-shape distribution on the internal wall provides high heat flux compared to a hawk-shape distribution; the film cooling effectiveness on the external wall is enhanced for the lateral film cooling effectiveness by heat conduction and film cooling (convection); by comparing the square-rib and pin-rib configurations, the circular-rib configuration offers a higher film cooling effectiveness on the Aluminum wall. Research limitations/implications – In the present research, the combination of internal cooling and external cooling is used to predict cooling effectiveness on film-cooled flat plate; two kinds of different plate materials are used to obtain the influence of the thermal conductivity. The successful computational method should give guidelines for potential CFD users in engineering sciences. Practical implications – The results of the paper are of engineering interest where film cooling and ribbed surfaces are applied. The successful computational method will also serve as guidelines for potential users of CFD in design as well as research and development work. Purpose Effusion cooling represents one the most innovative techniques for the thermal management of aero-engine combustors liners. The huge amount of micro-perforations implies a significant computational cost if cooling holes are included in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations; therefore, many efforts are reported in literature to develop lower-order approaches aiming at limiting the number of mesh elements. This paper aims to report a numerical investigation for validating two approaches for modelling film cooling, distinguished according to the way coolant is injected (i.e. through either point or distributed mass sources).Design/methodology/approach The approaches are validated against experimental data in terms of adiabatic effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient distributions obtained for effusion cooled flat plates. Additional reynolds-averaged naver stokes (RANS) simulations were performed meshing also the perforation, so as to distinguish the contribution of injection modelling with respect to intrinsic limitations of turbulence model modelling.Findings Despite the simplified strategies for coolant injection, this work clearly shows the feasibility of obtaining a sufficiently accurate reproduction of coolant protection in conjunction with a significant saving in terms of computational cost.Practical/implications The proposed methodologies allow to take into account the presence of film cooling in simulations of devices characterized by a huge number of holes.Originality/value This activity represents the first thorough and quantitative comparison between two approaches for film cooling modelling, highlighting the advantages involved in their application. Purpose Safety improvement and pollutant reduction in many practical combustion systems and especially in aero-gas turbine engines require an adequate understanding of flame ignition and stabilization mechanisms. Improved software and hardware have opened up greater possibilities for translating basic knowledge and the results of experiments into better designs. The present study deals with the large eddy simulation (LES) of an ignition sequence in a conical shaped bluff-body stabilized burner involving a turbulent non-premixed flame. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of spark location on ignition success. Particular attention is paid to the ease of handling of the numerical tool, the computational cost and the accuracy of the results.Design/methodology/approach The discrete particle ignition kernel (DPIK) model is used to capture the ignition kernel dynamics in its early stage of growth after the breakdown period. The ignition model is coupled with two combustion models based on the mixture fraction-progress variable formulation. An infinitely fast chemistry assumption is first done, and the turbulent fluctuations of the progress variable are captured with a bimodal probability density function (PDF) in the line of the Bray–Moss–Libby (BML) model. Thereafter, a finite rate chemistry assumption is considered through the flamelet-generated manifold (FGM) method. In these two assumptions, the classical beta-PDF is used to model the temporal fluctuations of the mixture fraction in the turbulent flow. To model subgrid scale stresses and residual scalars fluxes, the wall-adapting local eddy (WALE) and the eddy diffusivity models are, respectively, used under the low-Mach number assumption.Findings Numerical results of velocity and mixing fields, as well as the ignition sequences, are validated through a comparison with their experimental counterparts. It is found that by coupling the DPIK model with each of the two combustion models implemented in a LES-based solver, the ignition event is reasonably predicted with further improvements provided by the finite rate chemistry assumption. Finally, the spark locations most likely to lead to a complete ignition of the burner are found to be around the shear layer delimiting the central recirculation zone, owing to the presence of a mixture within flammability limits.Research limitations/implications Some discrepancies are found in the radial profiles of the radial velocity and consequently in those of the mixture fraction, owing to a mismatch of the radial velocity at the inlet section of the computational domain. Also, unlike FGM methods, the BML model predicts the overall ignition earlier than suggested by the experiment; this may be related to the overestimation of the reaction rate, especially in the zones such as flame holder wakes which feature high strain rate due to fuel-air mixing.Practical implications This work is adding a contribution for ignition modeling, which is a crucial issue in various combustion systems and especially in aircraft engines. The exclusive use of a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code widely used by combustion system manufacturers allows a direct application of this simulation approach to other configurations while keeping computing costs at an affordable level.Originality/value This study provides a robust and simple way to address some ignition issues in various spark ignition-based engines, namely, the optimization of engines ignition with affordable computational costs. Based on the promising results obtained in the current work, it would be relevant to extend this simulation approach to spray combustion that is required for aircraft engines because of storage volume constraints. Purpose – One of the most critical gas turbine engine components, the rotor blade tip and casing, is exposed to high thermal load. It becomes a significant design challenge to protect the turbine materials from this severe situation. The purpose of this paper is to study numerically the effect of turbine inlet temperature on the tip leakage flow structure and heat transfer. Design/methodology/approach – In this paper, the effect of turbine inlet temperature on the tip leakage flow structure and heat transfer has been studied numerically. Uniform low (LTIT: 444 K) and high (HTIT: 800 K) turbine inlet temperature, as well as non-uniform inlet temperature have been considered. Findings – The results showed the higher turbine inlet temperature yields the higher velocity and temperature variations in the leakage flow aerodynamics and heat transfer. For a given turbine geometry and on-design operating conditions, the turbine power output can be increased by 1.33 times, when the turbine inlet temperature increases 1.80 times. Whereas the averaged heat fluxes on the casing and the blade tip become 2.71 and 2.82 times larger, respectively. Therefore, about 2.8 times larger cooling capacity is required to keep the same turbine material temperature. Furthermore, the maximum heat flux on the blade tip of high turbine inlet temperature case reaches up to 3.348 times larger than that of LTIT case. The effect of the interaction of stator and rotor on heat transfer features is also explored using unsteady simulations. The non-uniform turbine inlet temperature enhances the heat flux fluctuation on the blade tip and casing. Originality/value – The increase of turbine inlet temperature is usually proposed to achieve the higher turbine efficiency and the higher turbine power output. However, it has not been reported how much the heat transfer into the blade tip and casing increases with the increased turbine inlet temperature. This paper investigates the heat transfer distributions on the rotor blade tip and casing, associated with the tip leakage flow under high and low turbine inlet temperatures, as well as non-uniform temperature distribution.
