How should teachers of international relations in settler-colonial states engage with First Nations' sovereignty claims? While a growing body of recent scholarship explores how teaching might acknowledge and move beyond the discipline's racist and colonial origins, less research investigates how pedagogy might rectify inattention to Indigenous sovereignty. This paper reports on a class activity that sought to highlight how the discipline's foundational assumptions can naturalize Indigenous dispossession. In the class, students were asked to conduct discourse analysis of debates surrounding the "Uluru Statement from the Heart," and to consider practices of Indigenous transnationalism. Although students generally succeeded in identifying how discursive practices consolidate the authority of the settler-colonial state, class discussion tended to reproduce the state's justificatory narratives and to classify First Nations' claims as akin to those of any other ethnic minority. At a time when many universities are seeking to embed more Indigenous content within curriculum, we reflect on how the activity revealed epistemic colonialism's operation within educational settings. We argue that in addition to introducing Indigenous perspectives and knowledges, it is valuable for teaching in settler-colonial states to focus critical attention onto non-Indigenous practices that reproduce systemic injustice. Mitigation is a pragmatic-linguistic category traditionally related to the theory of verbal politeness. Previous work on this issue has shown that conversational hedging is largely conditioned by the speaker's identity (Albelda 2012 Cestero 2011 Samper 2017), that is why a deeper understanding of attenuating phenomena requires close attention to the social context underpinning communicative interactions. This paper advances some preliminary results from the ongoing research on discursive mitigation in the Malaga-PRESEEA spoken corpus. The analysis is centered on the underlying mitigating functions in the speech performance of a group of speakers with university education. Since one of our main objectives is contrastive, and previous solid research on attenuation has been carried out within the PRESEEA context, its methodological basis has been assumed (Albelda 2012 Cestero 2011 Samper 2017). Results of multifactorial logistic regression analysis from our data are partially similar to those obtained in previous studies: mitigation formulas are frequent among the well-educated speakers we have studied, especially those related to self-protection functions. Women—more than men—, and younger speakers—more than every other age-group—, tend to lead this use. La atenuación es una categoría pragmático-lingüística tradicionalmente relacionada con la teoría de la cortesía verbal. Trabajos anteriores demostraron que está condicionada, en gran medida, por los atributos sociales y personales de los hablantes, por lo que para entenderla plenamente es necesario atender a los factores sociales que la determinan (Albelda 2012 Cestero 2011 Samper 2017). Esta investigación presenta los resultados parciales del estudio de la atenuación discursiva en el corpus lingüístico PRESEEA-Málaga. Se analizan las funciones mitigadoras del discurso en un grupo de hablantes pertenecientes al nivel de instrucción alto. Contamos con investigaciones previas sobre la atenuación realizadas en el seno de PRESEEA-España, así que, para establecer comparaciones, asumimos los fundamentos metodológicos comunes a esos trabajos (Albelda 2012 Cestero 2011 Samper 2017). El análisis de regresión logística multifactorial que hemos realizado permite afirmar que nuestros resultados coinciden en parte con los presentados en estudios anteriores: las fórmulas de atenuación son frecuentes entre los informantes de nivel de instrucción alto que han sido estudiados en este trabajo. De las funciones analizadas, aquellas relacionadas con la autoprotección son las más frecuentes. The UN Security Council has published about eighty-three thousand documents between 2001 and 2021. This study analyzes this large corpus of text to identify, map, and trace the evolution of discourses on climate change and their impact on the organization. The article analyzes diplomatic speeches and other primary sources to identify instances of climatization of security and securitization, riskification, and mainstreaming of climate change. To fulfill its aim, the article introduces a mixed method that combines an automated content analysis with a discourse analytic approach. The findings suggest that, despite the stall in high-level discussions on climate security, the Security Council is de facto moving toward a climatization of security and riskification of climate change in daily practices, procedures, and operations. Los mensajes de Navidad del rey Juan Carlos I constituyen una de las pocas ocasiones en las que el jefe del Estado español se dirige a los españoles a través de la televisión. El objetivo principal de este artículo es analizar estos textos emitidos por el monarca en el período de su reinado (1975-2013). Estamos ante unos mensajes que los pronuncia el representante de la institución de la Corona, pero que no tienen el correspondiente refrendo legal. Son costumbres y tradiciones aceptadas por todos. El estudio se lleva a cabo desde la perspectiva del análisis del discurso y desde la semiótica de la comunicación, para poner de relieve cómo el texto es utilizado con fines ideológicos para consolidar la imagen de la Monarquía, a la vez que la estructura del Estado. Las figuras del ethos y de la auctoritas reales se ponen de relieve cuando se quiere afianzar la imagen del monarca y de la institución que encarna. Los mensajes siguen el modelo de la oratoria clásica y se utilizan como medio para comentar, persuadir y arbitrar un marco de convivencia en España en la que el rey juega un papel de moderador entre el Estado y la ciudadanía. King Juan Carlos I's Christmas Messages are one of the few occasions when the head of the Spanish State addresses Spanish people on television. The main objective of this paper is to analyze the texts issued by the King during the period of his reign (1975-2013). They are speeches delivered by the representative of the Crown but they do not have any legal endorsement and, as a consequence, they belong to the realm of customs and traditions. The research was carried out from the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis and the Semiotics of Communication, in order to highlight how the texts are used with the ideological purpose of strengthening the face of the monarchy as well as that of the State structure. In this respect, the ethos and royal autorictas figures are emphasized when the intention is to enhance the monarch's image and that of the institution he embodies. The messages comply with the rules of classical oratory and are used as a means to discuss, persuade and arbitrate a framework of coexistence in Spain in which the King plays a role of liaison between the state and the citizens. En contextos de superdiversidad y movilidad transnacional, al disponer de repertorios plurilingües, los hablantes tienen la posibilidad de utilizar formas lingüísticas particulares indexicales y socioculturalmente asociadas a las diferentes lenguas, variedades diatópicas, estilísticas o registros (Agha 2005) a los que han estado expuestos a lo largo de sus trayectorias de vida (Busch 2012). Dichas formas lingüísticas, a veces híbridas e innovadoras, pueden ser utilizadas con fines pragmáticos como el de adoptar una postura social particular. On 11 March 2011, an earthquake of a 9.0 magnitude and the consequent tsunami destroyed Japan’s Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant. Known as 3/11 in Japan, the effects of this triple disaster will continue for decades. How did the media covering the catastrophe articulate issues of risk to the general public? This article is a textual analysis of accounts about the Fukushima disaster published between 11 March 2011 and 11 March 2013 in four of the most prominent media outlets in the United States. In particular, the analysis explores the practices through which these US media constructed the presence and meaning of public health risks resulting from the nuclear meltdown. The article illustrates how systematic media practices minimized the presence of health risks, contributed to misinformation, and exacerbated uncertainties. In the process, the study demonstrates how the media created vernacular epistemologies for understanding and evaluating the health risks posed by nuclear radiation.
