A pre-treatment process was evaluated in this work for wastewater from paper recycling using microwave technology followed by rapid precipitation of contaminants through centrifugation. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) were used to analyze and optimize the turbidity values. Thirty experimental runs were utilized including microwave (MW) power, duration, centrifuge time, and centrifuge speed as input variables, generated by the Central Composite Full Design (CCFD) approach. The experimental turbidity ranged from 8.1 to 19.7 NTU, while predicted values ranged from 8.4 to 19.7 NTU by ANN. The ANN model showed a robust prediction performance with low mean squared error values during training and testing. Moreover, high R² values showed a remarkable agreement between the experimental observations and ANN predictions. The results obtained from the input values (A:150.00, B:60.00, C:15.00, D:30.00) of sample 2, which gave the lowest turbidity value, showed the most removal of pollution. The results obtained from the input values (A:250.00, B:60.00, C:7.00, D:20.00) of sample 30, which gave the highest turbidity value, showed the least removal of pollution. This work reports the degradation of cellulosic material, i.e., paper, under different environmental conditions (soil and hydrolytic). Models were developed using central composite design (CCD) within the framework of response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) techniques. It is done as part of a solid waste management system to eliminate the waste produced by excessive paper usage and obtain optimized degradation conditions of paper. In view of the real environments where paper-based solid wastes are usually exposed, soil degradation and hydrolytic degradation of paper were investigated. The factors pH (4–10), compost ratio (2–5), CaCl2 (5–15 ppm), and time (7–20 days) were independent factors that varied for the study, and degradation conversion was measured as the dependent variable for soil degradation of paper. The factors pH (4–10), CaCl2 (2–5 ppm), tripotassium phosphate (TPP, 2–5 ppm), and time (6–16 days) were independent variables that varied for the study, and degradation conversion was the dependent variable for hydrolytic degradation of paper. The optimal conditions for soil degradation were determined to be a pH of 4, a compost ratio of 5, a salt (CaCl2) addition of 5 ppm, and a duration of 20 days, resulting in the highest observed conversion rate. The coefficient of regression (R2) for CCD is 87.24%, whereas it is 94.82% for ANN. The optimal conditions for achieving maximum conversion in hydrolytic degradation include a pH of 10, a CaCl2 salt concentration of 5 ppm, a TPP salt concentration of 2 ppm, and a duration of 16 days. The coefficient of regression for CCD is 75.15%, while the coefficient of regression for ANN is 93.91%. This paper presents an indoor positioning strategy based on Visible Light Communication that relies on LED luminaires as transmitters, whose luminous flux is modulated at different frequencies, and a light sensor as a receiver. Then, a previously trained Artificial Neural Network (ANN) uses the illuminance signal gathered by the receiver as input to estimate the sensor's position. The main contribution of the technique is that the ANN is trained by using an illuminance estimator based on the lighting distribution of the luminaires, which is obtained through the IES file provided by the luminaire's manufacturer, without the need to collect data from the environment. In this work, the designed illuminance estimator is validated by comparing it to the well-known commercial software DIALux and Relux. The algorithm's setting and the performance evaluation of the ANN are explained. Then, the impact of the lighting uniformity and the environment's number of divisions on the accuracy of the results is analyzed. This research paper explores the realm of fault detection in distributed motors through the vision of the Internet of electrical drives. This paper aims at employing artificial neural networks supported by the data collected by the Internet of distributed devices. Cross-verification of results offers reliable diagnosis of industrial motor faults. The proposed methodology involves the development of a cyber–physical system architecture and mathematical modeling framework for efficient fault detection. The mathematical model is designed to capture the intricate relationships within the cyber–physical system, incorporating the dynamic interactions between distributed motors and their edge controllers. Fast Fourier transform is employed for signal processing, enabling the extraction of meaningful frequency features that serve as indicators of potential faults. The artificial neural network based fault detection system is integrated with the solution, utilizing its ability to learn complex patterns and adapt to varying motor conditions. Integrating photovoltaic systems (PV) into the grid has garnered significant attention due to increasing interest in renewable energy sources. Maximizing the PV systems output power is crucial for improving energy efficiency and reducing operating costs. This paper presents a comparative analysis of two different techniques of maximum power point tracking (MPPT): perturb and observe (P&O) and artificial neural network (ANN) MPPT, focusing on their application in grid-connected PV systems. The paper evaluates their performance under various operating conditions, including changes in irradiance and temperature, that are discussed in three cases. The comparative analysis includes metrics such as voltage regulation and power loss. MATLAB Simulink is utilized to implement P&O and ANN MPPT methods, which include a PV cell connected to an MPPT-controlled boost converter. The simulation demonstrates the power loss of the PV model as well as the voltage regulation in the three cases for the two methods. The results obtained in simulation and implementations show that the ANN method outperforms the P&O in the three cases discussed in terms of power loss, voltage regulation, and efficiency. In this paper, model updating for tall tower structures is discussed, a novel model variable index is proposed, and a selection method of model variables to be updated that can consider the high sensitivity of the displacement residuals and the small influence of the measurement errors is presented based on an artificial neural network (ANN). When the multi-layer perceptron architecture of the ANN obtains the optimal number of hidden layer neurons and the number of iterations, it is verified that the position and degree of the structural model defects can be detected by updating the selected model variables. Additionally, situations in which there is a large order-of-magnitude difference between the model variables are also discussed. It is found that in the proposed model variable index, the displacement residuals are more important than the measurement errors; however, as the measurement errors increase, they become more important in the model variable index. Furthermore, when the large-scale structure is damaged, the dynamic model can be transformed into an equivalent static model. Based on these results and findings, the proposed approach is expected to be used for design and analysis purposes, including structural health monitoring, safety assessment, damage identification, and structural reinforcement. Detecting instruments in a music signal is often used in database indexing, song annotation, and creating applications for musicians and music producers. Therefore, effective methods that automatically solve this issue need to be created. In this paper, the mentioned task is solved using mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) and various architectures of artificial neural networks. The authors' contribution to the development of automatic instrument detection covers the methods used, particularly the neural network architectures and the voting committees created. All these methods were evaluated, and the results are presented and discussed in the paper. The proposed automatic instrument detection methods show that the best classification quality was obtained for an extensive model, which is the so-called committee of voting classifiers. This paper presents a groundbreaking control strategy for a bidirectional battery charger that allows power to be injected into the smart grid while simultaneously compensating for the grid's reactive power using an electric vehicle battery. An artificial neural network (ANN) controller is utilized for precise design to ensure optimal performance with minimal error. The ANN technique is applied to generate sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) for a bidirectional AC–DC inverter, with the entire algorithm simulated in MATLAB Simulink.The core innovation of this study is the creation of the ANN algorithm, which supports grid compensation using electric vehicle batteries, an approach termed "vehicle-for-grid". Additionally, the paper details the PCB circuit design of the system controlled by the DSP F28379D board, which was tested on a three-phase motor. The total harmonic distortion (THD) of the proposed ANN algorithm is approximately 1.85 % , compared to the MPC algorithm's THD of about 2.85 % . This indicates that the proposed algorithm is more effective in terms of the quality of the power injected into the grid. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to propose a new velocity prediction navigation algorithm to develop a conflict-free path for robots in dynamic crowded environments. The algorithm BP-prediction and reciprocal velocity obstacle (PRVO) combines the BP neural network for velocity PRVO to accomplish dynamic collision avoidance. Design/methodology/approach: This presented method exhibits innovation by anticipating ahead velocities using BP neural networks to reconstruct the velocity obstacle region; determining the optimized velocity corresponding to the robot's scalable radius range from the error generated by the non-holonomic robot tracking the desired trajectory; and considering acceleration constraints, determining the set of multi-step reachable velocities of non-holonomic robot in the space of velocity variations. Findings: The method is validated using three commonly used metrics of collision rate, travel time and average distance in a comparison between simulation experiments including multiple differential drive robots and physical experiments using the Turtkebot3 robot. The experimental results show that our method outperforms other RVO extension methods on the three metrics. This paper proposes an efficient optimization method for the stacking sequence of composite pressure vessels based on the joint application of finite element analysis (FEA), artificial neural network (ANN), and genetic algorithm (GA). The composite pressure vessel has many winding layers and varied angles, and the stacking sequence of the composite pressure vessel affects its performance. It is essential to carry out the optimal design of the stacking sequence. The experimental cost for optimal design of composite pressure vessels is high, and numerical simulation is time-consuming. ANN is used to predict the fiber direction stress of composite pressure vessels, which replaces FEA in the optimization process of GA effectively. In addition, the optimization efficiency of the optimization method proposed in this paper can be improved significantly when the neural network model is employed. The optimization results show that the peak stress in the fiber direction can be reduced by 37.3% with the design burst pressure. The burst pressure of the composite pressure vessel can be increased by 13.4% by optimizing the stacking sequence of composite pressure vessels while keeping the number of plies and the winding angle unchanged. The early detection of pests in plants and crops is essential for the production of good quality food. Computer vision techniques can be applied for the early detection of pests and which can minimise the pesticides used on the plants. Among many pests, white flies, mites, aphids and thrips are the most hazardous pests that affect the leaves. This paper presents an automated approach for the detection of different types of pests from leaf images of plants. The images of the plant leaves were acquired using a digital camera. Image pre-processing techniques, such as noise removal, filtering and contrast enhancement, are used for improving the quality of the images. Then, the k-means clustering method and global thresholding were used for segmenting the pests from the infected leaves. Textural features are extracted from those segmented images by statistical feature extraction methods. Surface waters are essential for meeting the needs of the world. In many regions, stream water quality is a major concern due to contamination from multiple sources. Stream water is also susceptible to climatic events and land-use practices influencing its catchment. Understanding the impact of such events on stream water quality is crucial for managing and protecting aquatic ecosystems and providing safe drinking water to communities that rely on these streams. Hence, monitoring and evaluating stream water quality holds significance in identifying potential hazards and implementing suitable management strategies. In this paper, a novel effort was made to determine the relative feature importance of a set of watershed characteristics (precipitation, temperature, urban land use, agricultural land use, and forest land-use factors) on four important water quality parameters (WQPs): fecal coliforms (FC), turbidity, pH, and conductivity of the Upper Green River watershed, Kentucky, USA. Random forest (RF), an ensemble learning method, was used to predict the WQPs from the causal parameters and determine the feature importance characteristics of the four WQPs previously mentioned. This model demonstrated that precipitation and temperature are the most influential factors on FC, turbidity, and pH. Forest land use and temperature are the two most important factors for conductivity. The novel feature importance factors of the RF model have likewise been confirmed for each WQP. In modeling stream WQPs, the developed the RF model outperformed the artificial neural network (ANN) model. Using the RF model, we obtain regression coefficients of (0.93, 0.74, and 0.94) for pH in training, testing, and overall. We obtain regression coefficients of (0.60, 0.64, and 0.61) using the ANN model. ⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠Overall, the RF model was more effective than the ANN model in modeling stream WQPs. The model identified precipitation and temperature as the most influential factors on FC, turbidity, and pH, while forest land use and temperature were the most important factors in determining conductivity. It is also found that land use factors are important to improve the accuracy of WQPs predictions from climate variables. This paper proposes a hybrid data‐driven and physics‐based simulation technique for seismic response evaluation of steel Buckling‐Restrained Braced Frames (BRBFs) considering brace fracture. Buckling‐Restrained Brace (BRB) fracture is represented by cumulative plastic deformation capacity. A dataset, consisting of 95 past BRB laboratory tests and 120 simulated BRB responses generated using the finite element method, is first developed. An Artificial Neural Network‐based (ANN) predictive model is then trained using the training dataset to estimate the cumulative plastic deformation of BRBs. The prediction capability of the ANN‐based predictive model is validated using the training dataset and an existing regression‐based predictive model. In the second part of the paper, an hybrid simulation technique combining the data‐driven model and physics‐based numerical modeling is presented to conduct the nonlinear time history analysis, followed by 1) validation against a full‐scale BRBF testing and 2) demonstration of the proposed simulation technique using a six‐story BRBF. The results confirm that the proposed predictive model can predict the BRB fracture with sufficient accuracy. Addressing the challenges of scalable and cost-effective energy performance analysis in mid to high-rise office buildings, this paper introduces a novel approach utilizing an inverse-based artificial neural network (ANN). This ANN was trained on synthetically generated heating and cooling load parameters – derived from simulations conducted in EnergyPlus – to predict characterization parameters, including the building envelope, internal heat gains, and HVAC operational parameters. Diverging from traditional forward surrogate models, this inverse surrogate model fills a critical gap in current building energy modeling approaches that are hindered by data and resource limitations. Its effectiveness is verified with a testing dataset of 3000 buildings and is further demonstrated through a case study in Ottawa, Ontario. Saltwater intrusion is an essential problem in estuaries that can threaten the ecological environment, especially in high-salinity situations. Therefore in this paper, traditional multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN) modeling are applied to forecast overall and high salinity in the Lower Scheldt Estuary, Belgium. Mutual information (MI) and conditional mutual information (CMI) are used to select optimal driving forces (DFs), with the daily discharge (Q), daily water temperature (WT), and daily sea level (SL) selected as the main DFs. Next, we analyze whether applying a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to remove the noise from the original time series improves the results. Here, the DWT is applied in Signal-hybrid (SH) and Within-hybrid (WH) frameworks. Both the MLR and ANN models demonstrate satisfactory performance in daily overall salinity simulation over the Scheldt Estuary. The relatively complex ANN models outperform MLR because of their capabilities of capturing complex interactions. Because the nonlinear relationship between salinity and DFs is variable at different locations, the performance of the MLR models in the midstream region is far inferior to that in the downstream region during spring and winter. The results reveal that the application of DWT enhances simulation of both overall and high salinity in this region, especially for the ANN model with the WH framework. With the effect of Q decline or SL rise, the salinity in the middle Scheldt Estuary increases more significantly, and the ANN models are more sensitive to these perturbations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present review paper addresses the increasing interest in the application of machine learning (ML) algorithms in the assessment of the fatigue response of additively manufactured (AM) metal alloys. This review aims to systematically collect, categorize, and analyze relevant research papers in this domain. The most commonly used ML algorithms are presented, discussing their specific relevance to the fatigue modeling of AM metal alloys. A detailed analysis of the most relevant input features used in the literature to predict the main parameters related to the fatigue response is provided. Each work has been analyzed to highlight its strengths and peculiarities, thereby offering insights into novel methodologies and approaches for addressing critical challenges within this field. Particular attention is dedicated to the role of defects and the related size‐effect, as they strongly influence the fatigue response. In conclusion, this review not only synthesizes existing knowledge but also offers forward‐looking recommendations for future research directions, providing a valuable resource for researchers in the domain of ML‐assisted fatigue assessment for AM metal alloys. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are the future of networking. They represent one of the best technologies for automation due to their characteristics, such as cost-effectiveness and wireless nature. However, WSNs require explicit programming to perform certain tasks, lacking adaptability. To address this limitation, machine learning (ML) can be highly beneficial as it grants networks the ability to make decisions automatically. This capability can refine the accuracy and efficiency of WSNs. This paper aims to provide a detailed classification of machine learning algorithms, discussing various problems of traditional wireless sensor networks and the solutions that machine learning can offer. The energy transition towards a low-emission matrix has motivated efforts to reduce the use of fossil fuels in the transportation sector. The growth of the electric mobility market has been consistent in recent years. In Brazil, there has been an accelerated growth in the sales rate of new electric (and hybrid) vehicles (EVs). Fiscal incentives provided by governments, along with the reduction in vehicle costs, are factors contributing to the exponential growth of the EV fleet—creating a favorable environment for the dissemination of new technologies and enabling the participation of players from sectors such as battery manufacturing and charging stations. Considering the international context, the E-Lounge R&D joint initiative aims to evaluate different strategies to economically enable the electric mobility market, exploring EV charging service sales by energy distribution utility companies in Brazil. This work describes the step-by-step development of an ideal model of a charging hub and discusses its operation based on a real deployment, as well as its associated technical and economic feasibility. Using EV charging data based on the E-Lounge's operational behavior, an artificial neural network (ANN) is applied to forecast future energy consumption to each EV charging station. This paper also presents an economic analysis of the E-Lounge case study, which can contribute to proposals for electric vehicle charging ecosystems in the context of smart energy systems. Based on the operational results collected, as well as considering equipment usage projections, it is possible to make EV charging enterprises feasible, even when high investments in infrastructure and equipment (charging stations and battery storage systems) are necessary, since the net present value is positive and the payback period is 4 years. This work contributes by presenting real operational data from a charging hub, a projection model aimed at evaluating future operations, and a realistic economic evaluation model based on a case study implemented in São Paulo, Brazil. The potential of unconventional hydrocarbon resources has been unlocked since the hydraulic fracturing technique in combination with long horizontal wells was applied to develop this type of reservoir economically. The design and optimization of the fracturing treatment and the stimulated reservoir volume and the forecasting of production performance are crucial for the development and management of such resources. However, the production performance of tight gas reservoirs is a complicated nonlinear problem, described by many parameters loaded with uncertainty. The complexity of the problem influences and inspires the sophistication of the solution to be used. This paper proposed an artificial network model that allows for fast, extended, and accurate analyses of the production performance of multiple fractured unconventional tight gas wells. In the comprehensive approach developed, the reservoir rock parameters, the drainage area, and the hydraulic fracture parameters are treated as a variable input to the model. The analysis is no longer constrained by fixed "shoes box" geometry, and the values of the parameters defining the reservoir and stimulated volume are not limited to a few discrete values. The numerical experiment used to construct a database for model development was designed using a genetically optimized Latin hypercube sampling technique. A special approach was used in the preparation of "blind data", which are crucial for truly reliable model verification. In the result, a developed tool offers an extended rock-fluid description, flexible model, and stimulated reservoir volume dimensioning and parameterization, as well as a high degree of applicability in sensitivity analysis and/or optimization. As the world's transport infrastructure ages, the importance of bridge condition monitoring is becoming increasingly acknowledged. Large-scale deployment of existing inspection and monitoring techniques is infeasible due to cost and logistical challenges. The concept of using sensors located within vehicles for low cost 'drive-by' monitoring has become the focus of much attention in recent years. This paper presents a new data-driven approach for drive-by bridge monitoring. Machine learning techniques are leveraged to allow the influence of vehicle speed to be considered and the Operating Deflection Shape Ratio (ODSR) is presented as an alternative damage-sensitive feature to the commonly used frequency spectrum. Extensive laboratory experiments demonstrate that the method is capable of detecting midspan cracking and seized bearings. A statistical classification approach is adopted to classify damage indicators as either 'damaged' or 'healthy'. Classification accuracy is seen to vary between 65-96% and is similar whether using the frequency spectrum or ODSR. Based on the results of the laboratory testing, it is expected that this approach could be implemented on a large scale to act as an early warning tool for infrastructure owners to identify bridges presenting signs of distress or deterioration. Recent increases in global food demand have made this research and, therefore, the prediction of agricultural commodity prices, almost imperative. The aim of this paper is to build efficient artificial intelligence methods to effectively forecast commodity prices in light of these global events. Using three separate, well-structured models, the commodity prices of eleven major agricultural commodities that have recently caused crises around the world have been predicted. In achieving its objective, this paper proposes a novel forecasting model for agricultural commodity prices using the extreme learning machine technique optimized with the genetic algorithm. In predicting the eleven commodities, the proposed model, the extreme learning machine with the genetic algorithm, outperforms the model formed by the combination of long short-term memory with the genetic algorithm and the autoregressive integrated moving average model. Despite the fluctuations and changes in agricultural commodity prices in 2022, the extreme learning machine with the genetic algorithm model described in this study successfully predicts both qualitative and quantitative behavior in such a large number of commodities and over such a long period of time for the first time. It is expected that these predictions will provide benefits for the effective management, direction and, if necessary, restructuring of agricultural policies by providing food requirements that adapt to the dynamic structure of the countries. Drinking water treatment is a complex system of chemical, physical, and biological processes that is highly dependent on water quality and the design of the treatment process. To create decision-support tools, the prediction of key performance indicators, such as settled water turbidity, is needed. A variety of data-driven modeling techniques is available to formulate such predictions. Datadriven models provide valuable tools for formulating predictions where there is a lack of mechanistic models or the mechanisms are not fully understood, as in surface water treatment. The objective of this paper is to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of various data-driven techniques for this important, but difficult, problem. Recognizing that the size and quality of the dataset are most critical in this kind of analysis, this work uses one of the largest datasets used in this context consisting of 2,527 vectors of water quality and operational data (2,527 X nine data frame) from a full-scale water treatment plant. The paper constructs and compares the performance of the several data-driven models including k-nearest neighbor (KNN) regression, polynomial regression, and artificial neural networks (ANN). Based on test scaled root mean square error (RMSE), the ANN model was the most predictive (0.124). Similarly, the ANN model had the best predictive performance based on total scaled RMSE (0.086). These results show that ANNs have a high potential for the development of a future decision support system in selecting appropriate coagulant doses based on settled water turbidity. The retinal impulse signal is the basic carrier of visual information. It records the distribution of light on the retina. However, its direct conversion to a scene image is difficult due to the nonlinear characteristics of its distribution. Therefore, the use of artificial neural network to reconstruct the scene from retinal spikes has become an important research area. This paper proposes the architecture of a neural network based on vector quantization, where the feature vectors of spike trains are extracted, compressed, and stored using a feature extraction and compression network. During the decoding process, the nearest neighbour search method is used to find the nearest feature vector corresponding to each feature vector in the feature map. Finally, a reconstruction network is used to decode a new feature map composed of matching feature vectors to obtain a visual scene. This paper also verifies the impact of vector quantization on the characteristics of pulse signals by comparing experiments and visualizing the characteristics before and after vector quantization. This study presents a numerical approach to the design and optimization of centrifugal impellers used in the pumps of active thermal control systems of spacecraft. Although launch costs have shrunk in the last decade, the performance requirements, such as efficiency and reliability, have increased, as such systems are required to work up to 15 years, depending on the mission. To that effect, our paper deals with the first step in this pump design, namely the hydraulic optimization of the impeller. Constructively, this type of impeller allows for certain balancing systems and labyrinth seals to be applied in a more effective way, as well as allowing for additive manufacturing methods to be used—however, details regarding these aspects are beyond the scope of the current paper. By combining empirical formulas, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, and artificial neural networks (ANNs), the research focuses on achieving high efficiency and fast manufacturing. A series of geometries have been sized and validated using steady-state RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) simulations, leading to the identification of the most efficient configuration. Subsequent optimization using an ANN resulted in a refined impeller design with notable improvements in hydraulic performance: a 3.55% increase in efficiency and a 7.9% increase in head. Key parameters influencing impeller performance, including blade number, incidence, and backsweep angles, are identified. This approach offers a comprehensive method to address the evolving requirements of space missions and contributes to the advancement of centrifugal pump technology in the space domain. There are various techniques for separating natural gas liquid (NGL) from natural gas, one of which is refrigeration. In this method, the temperature is reduced in the dew point adjustment stage to condense the NGLs. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a methodology for optimizing the NGLs production process by determining the optimal values for specific set-points such as temperature and pressure in various vessels and equipment. The methodology also focuses on minimizing energy consumption during the NGL production process. To do this, this research defines a multi-objective problem and presents a hybrid algorithm, including a genetic algorithm (NSGA II) and artificial neural network (ANN) system. We solve the defined multi-objective problem using NSGA II. In order to design a tool that is a decision-helper for selecting the appropriate set-points, the ability of the ANN algorithm along with multi-objective optimization is evaluated. We implement our proposed algorithm in an Iranian chemical factory, specifically the NGL plant, which separates NGL from natural gas, as a case study for this article. Electricity consumption in buildings is one of the major causes of energy usage and knowledge of this can help building owners and users increase energy efficiency and conservation efforts. For Pacific Island countries, building electricity demand data is not readily accessible or available for constructing models to predict electricity demand. This paper starts to fill this gap by studying the case of schools in Fiji. The aim of the paper is to assess the factors affecting electricity demand for grid-connected Fijian schools and use this assessment to build mathematical models (multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN)) to predict electricity consumption. The average grid-connected electricity demand in kWh/year was 1411 for early childhood education schools, 5403 for primary schools, and 23,895 for secondary schools. For predicting electricity demand (ED) for all grid-connected schools, the stepwise MLR model shows that taking logarithm transformations on both the dependent variable and independent variables (number of students, lights, and air conditioning systems) yields statistically significant independent variables with an R2 value of 73.3% and RMSE of 0.2248. To improve the predicting performance, ANN models were constructed on both the natural form of variables and transformed variables. The optimum ANN model had an R2 value of 95.3% and an RMSE of 59.4 kWh/year. The findings of this study can assist schools in putting measures in place to reduce their electricity demand, associated costs, and carbon footprint, as well as help government ministries make better-informed policies. In this paper, we propose a learning model for tracking the isolines of fluid based on the physical properties of particles in particle-based fluid simulations. Our method involves analyzing which weights, closely related to surface tracking among the various physical properties of fluid particles, are significant. These weights are used as input values for the learning algorithm, enabling relatively accurate isoline tracking. In addition, compared to existing learning models such as linear regression, LSTM (long short-term memory), and learning representation (1-layer) models, our method obtained superior surface tracking results without accumulating errors. By using our proposed network structure to track the fluid surface, it learns and predicts values derived from existing fluid simulation algorithms, eliminating the need for computational processes for level-set values and enabling real-time surface tracking. As the scale of the simulation increases, our method significantly reduces the time and resources consumed compared to traditional methods and can track the fluid surface without additional resource consumption. Furthermore, due to our method's simple network structure, the time consumed in the initial process of loading the model into memory is faster than models such as CNN and LSTM. Our proposed model occupies less than 30 kb of storage space, making it suitable for use in middleware. Metaheuristic algorithms with machine learning techniques have become popular because it works so well for problems like regression, classification, rule mining, and clustering in health care. This paper's primary purpose is to design a multi-disease prediction system using AI-based metaheuristic approaches. Initially, the data is collected in the form of diverse classes, which include Id, gender, date of birth, etc. The data has been preprocessed, normalized, and graphically represented to improve its quality and detect any errors. Later, machine learning models, such as decision tree, extra tree classifier, extreme gradient boosting classifier, light gradient boosting machine classifier, random forest, and artificial neural network, are initially trained without optimizing hyperparameters and then fine-tuned by integrating various hyperparameter optimizers such as grid search CV, random search, hyperband, and genetic search. During experimentation, it is found that optimizing the models using random search optimizer computed the highest accuracy of 100% as compared to the rest of the hyperparameter optimizers. In the context of 'Service Oriented Computing and Applications,' our multi-disease prediction system offers valuable innovation. In contrast to cumbersome benchtop spectrometers, integrated on-chip spectrometers are well-suited for portable applications in health monitoring and environmental sensing. In this paper, we have developed an on-chip spectrometer with a programmable silicon photonic filter by simply using parallel cascaded micro-ring resonators (MRs). By altering the transmission spectrum of the filter, multiple and diverse sampling of the input spectrum is achieved. Then, combined with an artificial neural network (ANN) model, the incident spectrum is reconstructed from the sampled signals. Each MR is coupled to adjacent ones, and the phase shifts within each MR can be independently tuned. Through dynamic programming of the phases of these MRs, sampling functions featuring diverse characteristics are obtained based on a single programmable filter with an adjustable number of sampling channels. This eliminates the need for a filter array, significantly reducing the area of the on-chip reconstructive spectrometer. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed design can achieve the reconstruction of continuous and sparse spectra within the wavelength range of 1450 nm to 1650 nm, with a tunable resolution ranging from 2 nm to 0.2 nm, depending on the number of sampling states employed. Obtaining mathematical models of nonlinear cyber–physical systems for use in controller design is both difficult and time consuming. In this paper, an ANN-based method is proposed to design a controller for a nonlinear system that does not require a mathematical model. The developed ANN-based control algorithm is implemented directly on a real-time field controller, and its performance is evaluated without the use of auxiliary devices, such as PCs or workstations. By executing machine learning algorithms on local devices or embedded systems, edge artificial intelligence (Edge AI) with transfer learning gives priority to processing data at the source, minimizing the necessity for continuous connectivity to remote servers. The control algorithm was developed using the Matlab Simulink environment. The first and second ANNs were cascaded, wherein the first ANN computes the appropriate pressure signal for the given displacement, while the second predicts the force based on the pressure value from the first ANN. Subsequently, the ANN-based control algorithm was converted to SCL code using the Simulink PLC Coder and deployed on the PLC for operation. The algorithm was tested using two different scenarios. The conducted tests demonstrated the successful prediction of pressure signals corresponding to the targeted displacement values and accurate estimation of force values. In this paper, the dispersion characteristics of slotted photonic crystal waveguides (SPCWs) have been estimated for any arbitrary set of structural parameters using machine learning-based artificial neural network (ANN). The machine learning-based technique yields faster solutions of the three-dimensional eigenvalue equations, which otherwise require substantial time using the conventional plane wave expansion (PWE)-based numerical simulations. Most importantly, the novel contribution of the work lies in estimating the structural parameters of the SPCWs from the given specifications of the dispersion characteristics through an inverse computation. A simple feed-forward neural network has been employed for both the forward and inverse estimations. The computation performances using both the ANN model and PWE simulations are analyzed and compared. The research offers significant implications for the field of photonics. The rising population of millennials, coupled with Digital Assistants (DA) and online purchasing trends among consumers have gained increasing attention by global marketers. The study evaluates the influence of DA attributes on the purchasing intention (PUI) of millennials. A combined approach of PLS-SEM, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) is used to predict the PUI of 345 millennials. Also, multi-group analysis is employed to uncover the influence of gender on the relationship between PUI and DA attributes. The findings suggest that DA attributes may amplify purchasing intention among millennials, especially through perceived interactivity and anthropomorphism. Further, the moderating role of gender was found significant on the inter-relationship of perceived interactivity and PUI. This paper presents an artificial neural network (ANN) based method for overhead lines magnetic flux density estimation. The considered method enables magnetic flux density estimation for arbitrary configurations and load conditions for single-circuit, multi-circuit, and also overhead lines that share a common corridor. The presented method is based on the ANN model that has been developed using the training dataset that is produced by a specifically designed algorithm. This paper aims to demonstrate a systematic and comprehensive ANN-based method for simple and effective overhead lines magnetic flux density estimation. The presented method is extensively validated by utilizing experimental field measurements as well as the most commonly used calculation method (Biot - Savart law based method). In order to facilitate extensive validation of the considered method, numerous magnetic flux density measurements are conducted in the vicinity of different overhead line configurations. The validation results demonstrate that the used method provides satisfactory results. Thus, it could be reliably used for new overhead lines' design optimization, as well as for legally prescribed magnetic flux density level evaluation for existing overhead lines. This paper introduces a sequential approximate optimization method that combines the finite element method (FEM), dynamic differential evolution (DDE), and artificial neural network (ANN) surrogate models. The developed method is applied to address two optimization problems. The first involves metamaterial design optimization for metal sheet architecture with binary design variables. The second pertains to optimizing process parameters in multi-stage metal forming, where the discrete nature arises owing to changing tool geometries across stages. This process is highly non-linear, accumulating contact, geometric, and material non-linear effects discretely through forming stages. The efficacy of the proposed optimization method, utilizing ANN surrogate models, is compared with traditionally used polynomial response surface (PRS) surrogate models, primarily based on low-order polynomials. Efficient learning of ANN surrogate models is facilitated through the FEM and Python integration framework. Initial data for surrogate model training are collected via Latin hypercube sampling and FEM simulations. DDE is employed for sequential approximate optimization, optimizing ANN or PRS surrogate models to determine optimal design variables. PRS surrogate models encounter challenges in dealing with non-linear changes in sequential approximate optimization concerning discrete characteristics such as binary design variables and discrete non-linear behavior found in multi-stage metal forming processes. Owing to the discrete nature, PRS surrogate models require more data and iterations for optimal design variables. In contrast, ANN surrogate models adeptly predict non-linear behavior through the activation function's characteristics. In the optimization problem of metal sheet architecture for design Target C, the ANN surrogate model required an average of 4.6 times fewer iterations to satisfy stopping criteria compared with the PRS surrogate model. Furthermore, in the optimization of multi-stage deep drawing processes, the ANN surrogate model required an average of 6.1 times fewer iterations to satisfy stopping criteria compared with the PRS surrogate model. As a result, the sequential global optimization method utilizing ANN surrogate models achieves optimal design variables with fewer iterations than PRS surrogate models. Patient-specific 3D models of the human mandible are finding increasing utility in medical fields such as oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, dentistry, and forensic sciences. The efficient creation of personalized 3D bone models poses a key challenge in these applications. Existing solutions often rely on 3D statistical models of human bone, offering advantages in rapid bone geometry adaptation and flexibility by capturing a range of anatomical variations, but also a disadvantage in terms of reduced precision in representing specific shapes. Considering this, the proposed parametric model allows for precise manipulation using morphometric parameters acquired from medical images. This paper highlights the significance of employing the parametric model in the creation of a personalized bone model, exemplified through a case study targeting mandibular prognathism reconstruction. A personalized model is described as 3D point cloud determined through the utilization of series of parametric functions, determined by the application of geometrical morphometrics, morphology properties, and artificial neural networks in the input dataset of human mandible samples. With 95.05% of the personalized model's surface area displaying deviations within −1.00–1.00 mm relative to the input polygonal model, and a maximum deviation of 2.52 mm, this research accentuates the benefits of the parametric approach, particularly in the preoperative planning of mandibular deformity surgeries. Neonatal brain monitoring in the neonatal intensive care units (NICU) requires a continuous review of the spontaneous cortical activity, i.e., the electroencephalograph (EEG) background activity. This needs development of bedside methods for an automated assessment of the EEG background activity. In this paper, we present development of the key components of a neonatal EEG background classifier, starting from the visual background scoring to classifier design, and finally to possible bedside visualization of the classifier results. A dataset with 13,200 5-minute EEG epochs (8-- 16 channels) from 27 infants with birth asphyxia was used for classifier training after scoring by two independent experts. We tested three classifier designs based on 98 computational features, and their performance was assessed with respect to scoring system, pre- and post-processing of labels and outputs, choice of channels, and visualization in monitor displays. The optimal solution achieved an overall classification accuracy of 97% with a range across subjects of 81--100%. We identified a set of 23 features that make the classifier highly robust to the choice of channels and missing data due to artefact rejection. Our results showed that an automated bedside classifier of EEG background is achievable, and we publish the full classifier algorithm to allow further clinical replication and validation studies. Due to the semi-enclosed space of underground coal seams and the implementation of nitrogen injection measures, most coalfield fires occur in multi-atmosphere environments. At present, there is little research on the combustion situations and kinetics of coal under multi-atmosphere conditions. In this paper, simultaneous thermal analysis experiments were conducted to investigate the combustion behaviors of bituminous coal and anthracite in O2-CO2-N2 atmospheres with different volume fractions. A new index for quantitative characterization of coal combustion situation in multi-gas mixing atmospheres was proposed based on the combustion situation intensity index and heat release rate. Furthermore, a method to predict the coal combustion situation using artificial neural network (ANN) was proposed. The results showed that the combustion rate decreased with the increase in CO2 volume fraction and the decrease of N2 volume fraction under multi-gas mixing atmospheres. The volume fraction changes in inert gases had little effect on the ignition temperature or burnout temperature and had a greater effect on the combustion reactivity of bituminous coal. In a 15% O2-5% CO2-80% N2 atmosphere, the combustion could be inhibited for bituminous coal, while being promoted by anthracite. The combustion situation of bituminous coal in a 15% O2-25% CO2-60% N2 atmosphere was greater than that in air. Based on the proposed coal combustion situation index and the selected optimal ANN model, the coal combustion situation in O2-CO2-N2 atmospheres could be well predicted. Purpose: Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) is one of the growing technologies in additive manufacturing, that can be used in a number of applications. In this method, process parameters can be customized and their simultaneous variation has conflicting impacts on various properties of printed parts such as dimensional accuracy (DA) and surface finish. These properties could be improved by optimizing the values of these parameters. Design/methodology/approach: In this paper, four process parameters, namely, print speed, build orientation, raster width, and layer height which are referred to as "input variables" were investigated. The conflicting influence of their simultaneous variations on the DA of printed parts was investigated and predicated. To achieve this goal, a hybrid Genetic Algorithm – Artificial Neural Network (GA-ANN) model, was developed in C#.net, and three geometries, namely, U-shape, cube and cylinder were selected. To investigate the DA of printed parts, samples were printed with a central through hole. Design of Experiments (DoE), specifically the Rotational Central Composite Design method was adopted to establish the number of parts to be printed (30 for each selected geometry) and also the value of each input process parameter. The dimensions of printed parts were accurately measured by a shadowgraph and were used as an input data set for the training phase of the developed ANN to predict the behavior of process parameters. Then the predicted values were used as input to the Desirability Function tool which resulted in a mathematical model that optimizes the input process variables for selected geometries. The mean square error of 0.0528 was achieved, which is indicative of the accuracy of the developed model. Findings: The results showed that print speed is the most dominant input variable compared to others, and by increasing its value, considerable variations resulted in DA. The inaccuracy increased, especially with parts of circular cross section. In addition, if there is no need to print parts in vertical position, the build orientation should be set at 0° to achieve the highest DA. Finally, optimized values of raster width and layer height improved the DA especially when the print speed was set at a high value. Originality/value: By using ANN, it is possible to investigate the impact of simultaneous variations of FFF machines' input process parameters on the DA of printed parts. By their optimization, parts of highly accurate dimensions could be printed. These findings will be of significant value to those industries that need to produce parts of high DA on FFF machines. Unsteady aerodynamic prediction at high angles of attack is of great importance to the design and development of advanced fighters. In this paper, a weighted feature fusion model (WFFM) that combines the state-space model and neural networks is proposed to build an unsteady aerodynamic model for the precise simulation and control of post-stall maneuvers. In the proposed model, the influences of the physical model on neural networks are considered and adjusted by introducing a standardization layer and a new weighting method. A long short-term memory (LSTM) network is used to fuse two mappings: one from flight states to aerodynamic loads, and the other from low-fidelity data to high-fidelity data. Data from wind tunnel oscillation experiments at high angles of attack using a new kind of wire-driven parallel robot and the traditional tail support are used for verifying the proposed aerodynamic model. The output of the WFFM is also compared with predictions from other models, such as the state-space model, single LSTM model, and feature fusion model not including a feature weighting layer. Results demonstrate improved accuracy of the proposed model in the interpolation and extrapolation tests. Furthermore, the WFFM is applied to the flight simulation of F-16 with different control inputs. During hard machining, steels subjected to very high thermal and mechanical loads can result in microstructural/phase changes such as the formation of a white layer. This layer, which is often harder than the raw material, is considered detrimental to the fatigue performance and in-service life of machined parts. This paper proposes a comprehensive study of white layer formation during hard machining of steels using statistical analysis and artificial neural networks (ANN) modeling. To this end, two steals, named AISI 52100 and AISI 4340, commonly used in the manufacturing of structural machines' components and extensively studied in the last decade, have been considered in this study. First, Taguchi method combined with response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to analyze and to optimize the machining parameters regarding the white layer thickness. Second, an ANN model is developed to predict the white layer thickness during hard machining of the studied steels using a large amount of machining data. Three training algorithms were tested to find the most robust configuration. The equivalent carbon parameter was introduced for the first time in machining modeling which make the proposed ANN-based model capable of predicting the white layer thickness for different hardened steels. Artificial neural network (ANN) based surrogate models have been widely used in place of high-fidelity simulation tools. Error metrics such as mean absolute error, and root mean squared error (RMSE) have been widely used as de facto criteria. However, whether the ANN-based surrogate model can adequately reproduce the interwoven relationships and nonlinear causalities between design variables and simulated outputs are often overlooked. In this regard, the authors designed a case study regarding four ANN-based surrogate models. It was found that despite all of the models having low RMSEs, the models failed to adequately predict the causal relationships between input variables and energy use. In other words, the surrogate models were not always capable of providing accurate assessments of expected energy use reduction as a result of design changes. This paper presents a new approach for the online estimation of stator and rotor resistance of induction motors for speed sensorless vector-controlled drives, using feed-forward artificial neural networks with advanced adaptive learning rates. For the rotor resistance estimation, a neural network model based on rotor speed and stator currents is developed. The rotor flux linkages acquired from the voltage model are compared with the neural network model. The feed-forward neural network employs an adaptive learning rate as the function of the obtained error during training for quick convergence with minimal estimation error. A two-layered neural network model based on the stator voltage and current equations is developed for the stator resistance estimation. The d-q axes stator currents obtained from the developed model are compared with the acquired d-q axes stator currents. For the fast convergence with minimal estimation error, an adaptive learning rate as the function of error is adopted during training. Furthermore, the neural network estimates the induction motor's speed. The simulation and experimental results justify that the developed algorithms track variation in the resistances quickly and precisely along with the speed as compared with the conventional constant learning rate algorithm, leading to reliable operation of the drive. Purpose: This study aims to elucidate the machining properties of low-cost expanded clay-reinforced syntactic foams by using different neural network models for the first time in the literature. The main goal of this endeavor is to create a casting machining-neural network modeling flow-line for real-time foam manufacturing in the industry. Design/methodology/approach: Samples were manufactured via an industry-based die-casting technology. For the slot milling tests performed with different cutting speeds, depth of cut and lubrication conditions, a 3-axis computer numerical control (CNC) machine was used and the force data were collected through a digital dynamometer. These signals were used as input parameters in neural network modelings. Findings: Among the algorithms, the scaled-conjugated-gradient (SCG) methodology was the weakest average results, whereas the Levenberg–Marquard (LM) approach was highly successful in foreseeing the cutting forces. As for the input variables, an increase in the depth of cut entailed the cutting forces, and this circumstance was more obvious at the higher cutting speeds. Research limitations/implications: The effect of milling parameters on the cutting forces of low-cost clay-filled metallic syntactics was examined, and the correct detection of these impacts is considerably prominent in this paper. On the other side, tool life and wear analyses can be studied in future investigations. Practical implications: It was indicated that the milling forces of the clay-added AA7075 syntactic foams, depending on the cutting parameters, can be anticipated through artificial neural network modeling. Social implications: It is hoped that analyzing the influence of the cutting parameters using neural network models on the slot milling forces of metallic syntactic foams (MSFs) will be notably useful for research and development (R&D) researchers and design engineers. Moreover, quantum neural network algorithms are finding utility in social network modeling, associative memory systems, and automatic control mechanisms. Nevertheless, ensuring the reliability of quantum neural networks is crucial as it directly influences network performance and stability. To investigate the reliability of quantum neural networks, this paper proposes a methodology wherein operator measurements are performed on the final states of the output quantum states of a quantum neural network. The proximity of these measurements to the target value is compared, and the fidelity value, combined with a quantum gate operation, is utilized to assess the reliability of the quantum neural network. Through network training, the results demonstrate that, under optimal parameters, both the fidelity of the final state measurement value and the target value of the model approach are approximately equal to 1. It indicates that training mitigates the errors stemming from encoding into the initial quantum state, thereby resulting in enhanced system reliability and accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Artificial Intelligence is quickly emerging as a technological solution for the agriculture industry to surmount its classical challenges. Artificial Intelligence is facilitating farmers to refine their products and alleviate unfavourable impacts due to the environment. The central concern of this paper is predictive analytics to develop a machine learning model to identify and predict crop yield based on multiple environmental factors. In this paper, a hybrid learner 'RaNN' is proposed that combines the feature sampling and majority voting technique of Random Forest in-combination with the multilayer Feedforward Neural Network to predict the crop yield. Research has also ascertained the essential features responsible for accurate yield prediction. The proposed model works for rice yield prediction, one of the chief grains of India. The region chosen for the work is Punjab, which is among the largest producer states of India for rice. The dataset consists of 15 attributes comprising the weather and agriculture data collected from the Indian Meteorological Department Pune, and Punjab Environment Information System (ENVIS) Center, Government of India. The study has also made a comparative assessment of 'RaNN' with machine learning methods like Multiple Linear Regression, Random Forest, Decision Tree, Boosting Regression, Support Vector Machine Regression, Ensemble Learner, and Artificial Neural Network. Our model RaNN has listed a better prediction accuracy with minimal error among the other techniques providing a 98% correlation between the actual and the predicted yield. Purpose: This study aims to propose a risk-induced game theoretic forecasting model to predict average daily rate (ADR) under COVID-19, using an advanced recurrent neural network. Design/methodology/approach: Using three data sets from upper-midscale hotels in three locations (i.e. urban, interstate and suburb), from January 1, 2018, to August 31, 2020, three long-term, short-term memory (LSTM) models were evaluated against five traditional forecasting models. Findings: The models proposed in this study outperform traditional methods, such that the simplest LSTM model is more accurate than most of the benchmark models in two of the three tested hotels. In particular, the results show that traditional methods are inefficient in hotels with rapid fluctuations of demand and ADR, as observed during the pandemic. In contrast, LSTM models perform more accurately for these hotels. Research limitations/implications: This study is limited by its use of American data and data from midscale hotels as well as only predicting ADR. Practical implications: This study produced a reliable, accurate forecasting model considering risk and competitor behavior. Theoretical implications: This paper extends the application of game theory principles to ADR forecasting and combines it with the concept of risk for forecasting during uncertain times. Originality/value: This study is the first study, to the best of the authors' knowledge, to use actual hotel data from the COVID-19 pandemic to determine an appropriate neural network forecasting method for times of uncertainty. The main goal of this work is to combine the usage of the numerical homogenization technique for determining the effective properties of representative volume elements with artificial neural networks. The effective properties are defined according to the classical laminate theory. The purpose is to create and train a rapid surrogate model for the quick calculation of the mechanical properties of hollow concrete slabs. First, the homogenization algorithm was implemented, which determines membrane, bending and transverse shearing properties of a given parametrized hollow-core precast slab reinforced with steel bars. The algorithm uses the finite element mesh but does not require a formal solution of the finite element method problem. Second, the learning and training artificial intelligence framework was created and fed with a dataset obtained by optimal Latin hypercube sampling. In the study, a multilayer perceptron type of artificial neural network was used. This allows for obtaining rapid calculations of the effective properties of a particular hollow-core precast slab by using a surrogate model. In the paper, it has been proven that such a model, obtained via complex numerical calculations, gives a very accurate estimation of the properties and can be used in many practical tasks, such as optimization problems or computer-aided design decisions. The landing gear is a critical aircraft system that absorbs the kinetic energy of the vertical load and reduces the aircraft's impact at touchdown. This paper proposes a hybrid optimisation method for further optimising the buffer performance of a mature UAV's main landing gear. This method combines a propagation (BP) neural network method with a genetic algorithm (GA). A landing gear dynamics simulation model is established based on the software LMS Virtual.Lab Motion, and validate the model with tests. The optimisation model is established using a BP neural network and solved using a genetic algorithm. The maximum vertical load, the efficiency coefficient of buffer, and the efficiency coefficient of buffer system are used as the optimisation targets. The air chamber initial gas pressure, initial volume of buffer, and diameter of main oil hole are selected as the optimisation parameters, and the values after optimisation are 148 MPa, 165.2 mL, and 3.17 mm, respectively. The results show that the efficiency coefficient of buffer is increased by 3.7% and the efficiency coefficient of buffer system is increased by 1.13% and the maximum vertical load decreased by 0.6%, which indicated that the hybrid optimisation method is effective for landing gear buffering performance. Pore pressure prediction is a critical parameter in petroleum engineering and is essential for safe drilling operations and wellbore stability. However, traditional methods for pore pressure prediction, such as empirical correlations, require selecting appropriate input parameters and may not capture the complex relationships between these parameters and the pore pressure. In contrast, artificial neural networks (ANNs) can learn complex relationships between inputs and outputs from data. This paper presents a new empirical correlation for predicting pore pressure using ANNs. The proposed method uses 42 datasets of well log data, including temperature, porosity, and water saturation, to train ANNs for pore pressure prediction. The trained model, with the Bayesian regularization backpropagation function, predicts the pore pressure with an average absolute percentage error (AAPE) and correlation coefficient (R) of 4.22% and 0.875, respectively. The trained ANN is then used to develop a new empirical correlation that relates pore pressure to the input parameters considering the weights and biases of the optimized ANN model. To validate the proposed correlation, it is applied to a blind dataset, where the model successfully predicts the pore pressure with an AAPE of 5.44% and R of 0.957. The results show that the proposed correlation provides accurate and reliable predictions of pore pressure. The proposed method provides a robust and accurate approach for predicting pore pressure in petroleum engineering applications, which can be used to improve drilling safety and wellbore stability.
