In the context of increasing global food demand and the urgent need for production processes optimization, plant protection products play a key role in safeguarding crops from insects, pests, and fungi, responsible of plant diseases proliferation and yield losses. Despite the inaccurate distribution of conventional aerial spraying performed by airplanes and helicopters, Unmanned Aerial Spraying Systems (UASSs) offer low health risks and operational cost solutions, preserving crops and soil from physical damage. This study explores the impact of UASS flight height (2 m and 2.5 m above ground level), speed (1 m s−1 and 1.5 m s−1), and position (over the canopy and the inter-row) on vineyard aerial spraying efficiency by analysing Water Sensitive Papers droplet coverage, density, and Number Median Diameter using a MATLAB script. Flight position factor, more than others, influenced the application results. The specific configuration of 2 m altitude, 1.5 m s−1 cruising speed, and inter-row positioning yielded the best results in terms of canopy coverage, minimizing off-target and ground dispersion, and represented the best setting to facilitate droplets penetration, reaching the lowest parts generally more affected from disease. Further research is needed to assess UASS aerial PPP distribution effectiveness and environmental impact in agriculture, crucial for technology implementation, especially in countries where aerial treatments are not yet permitted. Soil cadmium (Cd) contamination has emerged as a significant global environmental concern, posing numerous risks to individual organisms and entire ecosystems. Concurrently, the global increase in pesticide usage has elevated the influx of chloride ions (Cl-) into the soil. Given Cl-'s robust ability to coordinate and complex with various heavy metal ions, understanding its influence on the migration and transformation of Cd in soil-rice systems is essential for the rational application of pesticides and the effective mitigation of soil heavy metal pollution. In this paper, we explained the effect of Cl- on the environmental behavior of Cd in the soil-rice system in terms of growth traits, Cd uptake and accumulation by rice, and Cd solid-solution phase interface behavior through pot experiments and sand culture experiments. The results showed that Cd concentrations in all parts of the rice treated with CaCl2 during the filling period were lower than those in the Ca(NO3)2-treated group, with Cd accumulation diminishing as Cl- concentration increased. This suggests that the filling period is critical for Cd uptake and accumulation in rice. Unlike the accompanying anion NO3 -, exogenous Cl- reduced Cd concentrations in the soil solution but increased them in rice. Notably, when the Cd/Cl ratio ranged from 0.625 to 2.5, Cl- formed predominantly CdCl+-complexes with free Cd2+ in the soil solution, enhancing the mobilization of Cd bound to soil particles and its subsequent absorption by rice. This study aims to assess Cl-'s effect on Cd migration and transformation in soil-rice systems, providing insights for safe rice production on Cd-contaminated soils and rational use of chlorine-containing pesticides. The investigation presented a novel finding regarding mitigating stress induced by chlorpyrifos in Eisenia fetida by incorporating biochar derived from rice straw and fly ash as soil amendments. It was observed that phenolic compounds exhibit solubility in methanol, and the methanolic fraction exhibited notable inhibitory effects on lipid peroxidation and displayed antioxidant properties. The defence mechanism of E. fetida, comprising catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and various other enzymes, remained effective in neutralizing stressors without disruption when the earthworm was subjected to diverse chemical agents or stressful conditions. These enzymes served as indicative markers of toxicity induced by pesticide exposure, even at sublethal concentrations. The scavenging of free radicals by these enzymes ultimately safeguarded the organism. Fly ash and biochar emerged as two organic alternatives capable of alleviating stress by providing a protective mechanism. In this context, the study examined the impact of biochar and fly ash amendments on earthworm biomarkers. The mortality rate at the median lethal concentration of chlorpyrifos was reduced to less than 50% through 3% and 5% modifications. In contrast to the non-amendment group exposed to sublethal doses, the amendment group exhibited higher levels of oxidative stress and lower protein content. This observation indicated the presence of stress induced by the accumulation of free radicals, which increased in number with higher doses of chlorpyrifos. Moreover, the study highlighted the interconnected nature of total antioxidant capacity and total phenolic capacity values, with a decrease in these parameters signifying a shift in earthworm biomarkers. The increase in the world population and the intensification of agricultural practices have resulted in the release of several contaminants into the environment, especially pesticides and heavy metals. This article reviews recent advances in using adsorbent and catalytic materials for environmental decontamination. Different materials, including clays, carbonaceous, metallic, polymeric, and hybrid materials, are evaluated for their effectiveness in pollutant removal. Adsorption is an effective technique due to its low cost, operational simplicity, and possibility of adsorbent regeneration. Catalytic processes, especially those using metallic nanoparticles, offer high efficiency in degrading complex pesticides. Combining these technologies can enhance the efficiency of remediation processes, promoting a more sustainable and practical approach to mitigate the impacts of pesticides and other agricultural pollutants on the environment. Therefore, this review article aims to present several types of materials used as adsorbents and catalysts for decontaminating ecosystems affected by agricultural pollutants. It discusses recent works in literature and future perspectives on using these materials in environmental remediation. Additionally, it explores the possibilities of using green chemistry principles in producing sustainable materials and using agro-industrial waste as precursors of new materials to remove contaminants from the environment. In April 2021, the government of Sri Lanka abruptly banned chemical fertilizers and other agrochemicals in a bid to safeguard the country's agricultural industry, particularly its farmers and consumers, from various health and environmental concerns. Therefore, it is critical to assess the impact of prohibiting chemical fertilizers and other agrochemicals on the smallholder tea production in the country. Additionally, understanding the smallholders' awareness of agrochemicals and their attitudes toward transitioning to organic farming is essential, as these factors hold significant importance for various aspects of the economy. The Ratnapura district was selected as the research area, owing to its extensive tea cultivation across numerous Divisional Secretary (DS) divisions. For this study, a sample of 120 tea smallholders was randomly chosen from three DS divisions (Balangoda, Opanayaka, Imbulpe), representing the entire district, who supply green leaves to the ABC tea factory in Balangoda. Research data were collected through a field survey conducted between September and November 2022. Descriptive statistics and paired t-tests were employed for data analysis. Additionally, the costs incurred for chemical fertilizers and other agrochemicals, the total cost of production, as well as tea production before and after the implementation of the fertilizer policy, were analyzed using paired t-tests. The results obtained indicate that the majority of tea smallholders possess a high level of education, with most owning tea lands ranging from 0.5 to 1.0 acre. Furthermore, a vast majority of them demonstrate understanding of both the positive and negative aspects of agrochemicals. Notably, the analysis reveals a significant increase in the cost of chemical fertilizers and other agrochemicals, as well as the total cost of production, following the implementation of the fertilizer policy. Conversely, tea production has shown a significant decrease. Moreover, farmers express willingness to transition gradually from conventional farming practices if suitable alternatives are available. However, they currently face a myriad of challenges due to the lack of effective alternatives for chemical fertilizers and agrochemicals. A study was carried out during kharif season of 2022 and 2023 at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU)-Regional Research Station (RRS), Ballowal Saunkhri (SBS Nagar) with the objective to find out the impact of foliar spray of agrochemicals on biophysical parameters, PAR interception and heat use efficiency of rainfed mung bean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek) under variable sowing dates. Timely sown crop (second fortnight of July) resulted in higher leaf area index, chlorophyll index, PAR interception and heat use efficiency (HUE) as compared to late sowing (first fortnight of August). Significantly higher seed yield, stover yield and biological yields were obtained in timely sowing during both the years of study. Foliar spray of KNO3 @ 1.5% recorded significantly higher leaf area index, chlorophyll index, PAR interception, heat use efficiency (HUE) and helio-thermal use efficiency (HTUE) but it was statistically similar with foliar spray of N:P:K (20:20:20) @ 1.5%. Foliar spray of KNO3 @ 1.5% and N:P:K (20:20:20) @ 1.5% gave statistically similar seed, stover and biological yields and significantly better than other treatments. There was an increase of 33.3% in seed yield with foliar spray of KNO3 @ 1.5% and increase of 29.1% with foliar spraying of N:P:K (20:20:20) @ 1.5%, when compared with control. Fine chemicals are produced in small annual volume batch processes (often <10,000 tonnes per year), with a high associated price (usually >USD 10/kg). As a result of their usage in the production of speciality chemicals, in areas including agrochemicals, fragrances, and pharmaceuticals, the need for them will remain high for the foreseeable future. This review article assesses current methods used to produce fine chemicals with heterogeneous catalysts, including both well-established and newer experimental methods. A wide range of methods, utilising microporous and mesoporous catalysts, has been explored, including their preparation and modification before use in industry. Their potential drawbacks and benefits have been analysed, with their feasibility compared to newer, recently emerging catalysts. The field of heterogeneous catalysis for fine chemical production is a dynamic and ever-changing area of research. This deeper insight into catalytic behaviour and material properties will produce more efficient, selective, and sustainable processes in the fine chemical industry. The findings from this article will provide an excellent foundation for further exploration and a critical review in the field of fine chemical production using micro- and mesoporous heterogeneous catalysts. Agrochemicals provide huge agronomic and economic benefits. However, excessive agrochemicals cause serious environmental pollution. The use of surfactants can effectively improve the utilization rate of agrochemicals in the soil, and an amphiphilic alginate derivative (Ugi-alg) was prepared in this work. This paper mainly discussed the affinity between Ugi-alg and soil colloids and the influence of Ugi-alg on the adsorption behavior of pesticides on colloidal particles. In the presence of 2.4 mM Ca2+, the affinity between soil colloids and Ugi-alg (30 mg/L) was enhanced (~ − 12.33 mV) compared with pure soil colloids (~ − 30 mV). The strong affinity between Ugi-alg and the colloids reduced the migration of acetamiprid. Transmission electron microscopy showed that soil colloids were wrapped by the network structure of Ugi-alg, indicating that Ugi-alg easily adhered to the surface of soil colloids. Studies of the adsorption showed the adsorption capacity of acetamiprid on soil colloids was 556 mg/g in the presence of Ugi-alg (30 mg/L) and Ca2+ (2.4 mM). And the adsorption behavior of acetamiprid in soil colloids was also not greatly affected by changes in pH and temperature. Fertilizers play an essential role in increasing crop yield, maintaining soil fertility, and provide a steady supply of nutrients for plant requirements. The excessive use of conventional fertilizers can cause environmental problems associated with nutrient loss through volatilization in the atmosphere, leaching to groundwater, surface run-off, and denitrification. To mitigate environmental issues and improve the longevity of fertilizer in soil, controlled release fertilizers (CRFs) have been developed. The application of CRFs can reduce the loss of nutrients, provide higher nutrient use efficiency, and improve soil health simultaneously to achieve the goals of climate-smart agricultural (CSA) practices. The major findings of this review paper are (1) CRFs can prevent direct exposure of fertilizer granule to soil and prevent loss of nutrients such as nitrate and nitrous oxide emissions; (2) CRFs are less affected by the change in environmental parameters, and that can increase longevity in soil compared to conventional fertilizers; and (3) CRFs can maintain required soil nitrogen levels, increase water retention, reduce GHG emissions, lead to optimum pH for plant growth, and increase soil organic matter content. Organophosphate compounds are widely used in agricultural activities to optimize food production. Contamination of field soil by these compounds may result in detrimental effects on soil biota. The aim of the present study was to isolate microorganisms from field soils and evaluate the strains on ability to degrade organophosphates as single isolate and as a consortium. Isolated strains were identified using both biochemical and molecular techniques. Results revealed that, out of the 46 isolated strains, three isolates herein referred to as S6, S36 and S37 showed an average diazinon degradation rate of 76.4%, 76.7% and 76.8% respectively, of the initial dose (50 ppm) within 11 days of incubation in mineral medium. Notably, isolates S36 and S37 were more effective than S6 in degrading diazinon by 40% in soil aliquot after 11 days and therefore were evaluated on biochemical reactions and molecular identification. The isolates showed variable biochemical characteristics. However, both isolates possessed catalase enzyme, but lacked oxidase enzyme. Molecular characterization showed that, the closest species for S36 and S37 were Priestia megaterium and P. arybattia, respectively, based on 16S rRNA gene similarity (> 99%). Combination of the strains increased diazinon degradation ability by 45% compared to single strain treatment. Chlorpyrifos was the most highly degraded organophosphate, compared to phorate and cadusafos. Therefore it is expected that the pesticide-degrading bacteria could be a solution to soil health improvement and contribution to the production of safe agricultural products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The global decline in pollinators is driven by several factors including pesticide usage. This work investigated the effects of routine pesticide usage on the diversity of insect visitors and pollination-related attributes (yield and seed viability) of four crops: cucumber (Cucumis sativus: Cucurbitaceae), okra (Abelmoschus esculentus: Malvaceae), soybeans (Glycine max: Fabaceae) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata: Fabaceae) in Buea, Southwest Cameroon. Using a randomized complete block design with two blocks of 16 experimental units each, pesticides were applied to half of the experimental units following routine famers practices. At flowering, insect visitors of flowers were collected using a net and preserved in 70% ethanol for identification under a stereomicroscope. The length, circumference and weigh of fruits were measured for cucumber and okra. The number of pods per plants of cowpea, the weight of cowpea and soybeans grains, the length of cowpea pods, and the number of beans per pods of cow pea were equally determined. Seed germination was determined by germination in Petri dishes under controlled conditions in the laboratory. Agrochemicals usage significantly reduced insect visitors' abundance in the experimental plots of the four crops with a total abundance of 4316 and 1459, respectively for control and experimental plots independent of the crop type. Cucumber and okra yields were increased by pesticide application. The number of pods per plant of cowpea and the weight of cowpea and soybeans were significantly lower in the control plot. Using pesticides had a negative impact (F = 21.9; p < 0.001) on the length of pods in cowpea. The number of beans per pod of cowpea was significantly lowered (F = 43.6; p < 0.001) by pesticide application. Pesticide utilisation had a negative impact on seed viability of all the crops. These results underscore the need for proper pesticide regulation by decision makers and highlight the urgency to implement alternative methods to improve crop yield. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The global cost-benefit analysis of pesticide use during the last 30 years has been characterized by a significant increase during the period from 1990 to 2007 followed by a decline. This observation can be attributed to several factors including, but not limited to, pest resistance, lack of novelty with respect to modes of action or classes of chemistry, and regulatory action. Due to current and projected increases of the global population, it is evident that the demand for food, and consequently, the usage of pesticides to improve yields will increase. Addressing these challenges and needs while promoting new crop protection agents through an increasingly stringent regulatory landscape requires the development and integration of infrastructures for innovative, cost- and time-effective discovery and development of novel and sustainable molecules. Significant advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and cheminformatics over the last two decades have improved the decision-making power of research scientists in the discovery of bioactive molecules. AI- and cheminformatics-driven molecule discovery offers the opportunity of moving experiments from the greenhouse to a virtual environment where thousands to billions of molecules can be investigated at a rapid pace, providing unbiased hypothesis for lead generation, optimization, and effective suggestions for compound synthesis and testing. To date, this is illustrated to a far lesser extent in the publicly available agrochemical research literature compared to drug discovery. In this review, we provide an overview of the crop protection discovery pipeline and how traditional, cheminformatics, and AI technologies can help to address the needs and challenges of agrochemical discovery towards rapidly developing novel and more sustainable products. Slow release agrochemicals are a class of agrochemical inputs that deliver their active chemicals or ingredients slowly over time. The majority of formulation consists of an outer medium and a core ingredient, the outer layer progressively degrades over time, enabling the slow release of the active substances to the earth. Bionanocomposites have obtained prominence as outer medium of slow release formulation. Bionanocomposites are a family of hybrid materials made by combining the biopolymer matrix and the nanofiller. Although traditional agrochemicals such as herbicides, insecticides, liming, pesticides, fertilizers etc. are frequently employed in field to improve crop productivity, their excessive use can have noxious effect on the environment and living organisms. These problems can be mitigated by the application of agrochemicals employing bionanocomposites, which increase bio-efficacy and reduces the danger of leaching. This comprehensive review highlights the significance of biobased nanocomposites, their synthesis techniques, applications in agriculture industry and their slow release efficiency in water and soil. It also focus on the remarkable contributions of various research in the slow and controlled release of nanofertilizers, nanopesticides and nanoherbicides which marks a sustainable way of developing agricultural practices aiming at the enhancement of yield. The rapid increase in industrialization and human population is leading to critical levels of environmental pollutants, such as agrochemicals or heavy metals, which affect the preservation and integrity of ecosystems, the accessibility to drinking water sources, and the quality of the air. As such, remediation of these issues demands strategies for implementing and designing novel technologies. In that regard, nanomaterials have unique physicochemical properties that make them desirable candidates for the detection and remediation of environmental pollutants. The scope of this review is to provide an analysis of the available nanomaterials that are being used as an approach to detect and remediate hazardous residues, comprising systems such as noble metals, biosensors, cyclodextrin-based polymers, and graphene oxide nanocomposites, to name a few. Furthermore, this work discusses said nanomaterials in terms of their effectiveness, sustainability, and selectivity as a guideline for researchers wishing to indulge in this relevant study area. Pesticides are used in modern agriculture to prevent crop losses by different pests and allow sustentation of the current crop yields. The pesticides after their use enter the environment viz., soil, water and air, then undergo various interactions and complex transformations resulting in the formation of multiple metabolites. The fate of pesticides in the environment depends on the properties of pesticide, soil and some other miscellaneous factors. Pesticides and their metabolites may move downward and reach groundwater under the effect of gravity, percolation, agricultural runoff or backsiphoning, hence there is risk to groundwater contamination. Chemicals have been noticed in groundwater, drinking water and surface water supplies. Therefore, research on ill-effects of the pesticide use and their fate in the environment is of great concern. The indigenous micro-flora is successful in biodegradation and removal of xenobiotics. So, in order to ensure public safety as well as the environmental protection from the chemical use, the pesticide use must be judicious and biodegradation of such chemicals to reduce their residues in agricultural products needs to be escalated. The current study was carried out in the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra, India, where rice cultivation relies on pesticides. The study aims to identify challenges faced by farmers in pesticide use and seeks input from farmers to develop strategies for rational pesticide use. The research explores farmers' behavior and perceptions regarding pesticide usage. It investigates socio-economic influences on buying behavior, the level of awareness about pesticide risks and safety measures, purchasing patterns, and promotional strategies employed by a pesticide company. Findings reveal that while pesticides contribute to crop protection, farmers lack proper knowledge about their safe use and potential risks. Lack of awareness and affordability issues lead to improper application, impacting human health and the environment. The study underscores the need for tailored educational programs to improve farmers' understanding of pesticides, emphasizing safe practices and optimal usage. Providing safety gear and measuring containers, ensuring affordability, and strengthening the distribution network is a must. We highlighted the importance of integrated pesticide management, involving scientific knowledge and traditional practices to achieve sustainable agriculture. The current information contributes to the development of effective strategies that align farmers' needs with responsible pesticide use, ultimately supporting both farmer livelihoods and environmental sustainability. Purpose: Overuse of chemical fertilizers and pesticides is a major policy concern for many countries. Chinese government has adopted many technologies and management practices to reduce their use. However, little is known about the effects of social-economic method such as short supply chain (SSC) participation. SSC is an important organizational innovation in fresh food supply chains aiming at directly connecting farmers and consumers. Closer relationships between farmers and consumers may result in production behavioral changes. Thus the purpose of this paper is to investigate the impacts of SSC participation on agrochemicals application. Design/methodology/approach: Based on the household level data collected from Jiangsu province in China, this paper employs an instrumental variable (IV) method to address the self-selection bias when we evaluate the effects of SSC participation on use of chemical fertilizer and pesticides. In addition, this paper also distinguishes between growth inputs and facilitating inputs in the production function when we calculate the marginal production values of chemical fertilizer and pesticides. Findings: The empirical results show that SSC participation significantly reduces chemical fertilizer use by 351 kg and pesticides costs by 1659 Yuan (RMB) per hectare, accounting for 43.4% of the average chemical fertilizer use and 49.4% of the average pesticide costs, respectively for Chinese vegetable farms. However, SSC participation still cannot improve the use efficiency of agrochemicals. Originality/value: This paper uses both application quantities and allocation efficiencies of chemical fertilizer and pesticides to comprehensively evaluate the effects of SSC participations. Schistosomiasis is a snail-borne parasitic disease, which is affecting almost 240 million people worldwide. The number of humans affected by schistosomiasis is continuously increasing with the rise in the use of agrochemicals. In this paper, a mathematical model is formulated and analyzed to assess the effect of agrochemicals on the transmission of schistosomiasis. The proposed model incorporates the effects of fertilizers, herbicides and insecticides on susceptible snails and snail predators along with schistosomiasis disease transmission. The existence and stability of the equilibria in the model are discussed. Sensitivity analysis is performed to identify the key parameters of the proposed model, which contributes most in the transmission of this disease. Numerical simulations are also performed to assess the impact of fertilizers, herbicides and insecticides on schistosomiasis outbreaks. Our study reveals that the agricultural pollution can enhance the transmission intensity of schistosomiasis, and in order to prevent the outbreak of schistosomiasis, the use of pesticides should be controlled. The fast-increasing number of commercially produced chemicals challenges the experimental ecotoxicity assessment methods, which are costly, time-consuming, and dependent on the sacrifice of animals. In this regard, Quantitative Structure-Property/Activity Relationships (QSPR/QSAR) have led the way in developing ecotoxicity assessment models. In this study, QSAR models have been developed using the pEC50 values of 82 diverse agrochemicals or agro-molecules against a planktonic crustacean Daphnia magna with easily interpretable 2D descriptors. Moreover, a link among octanol-water partition coefficient (KOW), bio-concentration factor (BCF), and critical body residue (CBR) has been addressed, and their imputation for the prediction of the toxicity endpoint (EC50) has been done with an objective of the advanced exploration of several ecotoxicological parameters for toxic chemicals. The developed partial least squares (PLS) models were validated rigorously and proved to be robust, sound, and immensely well-predictive. The final Daphnia toxicity model derived from experimental derived properties along with computed descriptors emerged better in statistical quality and predictivity than those obtained solely from computed descriptors. Additionally, the pEC50 and other important properties (log KOW, log BCF, and log CBR) for a set of external agro-molecules, not employed in model development, were predicted to show the predictive ability of the models. Trichogramma spp. have been used or have been proposed for use in biological control programmes of lepidopteran pests, including the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis, the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera, and the spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana. Releases are typically made by placing cards with parasitised eggs at set points in the field. However, this method can be cost-prohibitive due to its laborious nature. As a result, labour-saving mechanised release programmes have been developed, including distribution by spray equipment. However, few have investigated applying Trichogramma with a standard pesticide application (i.e. 'tank mix'). As a first step to ascertain the feasibility of such a system, we observed the effect of immersion of T. ostriniae pupae in field-relevant concentrations of eight herbicides (bentazon, clethodim, fomesafen, quizalofop, Glacial acetic acid, glyphosate, imazamox, imazethapyr), three fungicides (Copper Hydroxide, flutriafol, and penthiopyrad), one insecticide (K+ salt of fatty acid), and five adjuvants (Ammonium Sulfate, Crop Oil Concentrate, Methylated seed oil, Non-ionic surfactant, and Urea-Ammonium Nitrate) on the emergence of T. ostriniae adults. The herbicides GAA and clethodim; the fungicides copper hydroxide, flutriafol, and penthiopyrad; and the adjuvants COC, MSO, and NIS all reduced T. ostriniae emergence compared to a water control. No emergence was observed with exposure to quizalofop, GAA, or K+ salt of fatty acid treatments. Other treatments did not affect emergence compared to water. Thus, deploying Trichogramma with a standard pesticide application may be a feasible labour-saving distribution method that warrants further investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several factors, including biochemical patterns and gene expression patterns, were examined in Haloxylon ammodendron plants growing in two separate locations in the Al-Jouf region of Saudia Arabia. The soil in the two distinct locations has different properties, and the soil in one region has substantial quantities of heavy metals and agrochemicals, therefore it is deemed to be polluted. Samples were collected from the H. ammodendron growing on polluted and unpolluted soils and analyzed for different parameters. Plants growing on polluted soils showed significantly higher concentration of heavy metals and agrochemicals as compared to ones growing on unpolluted soil while as exhibited a significant decline in the content of essential mineral ions including potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese and iron. Lipid peroxidation and hydrogen peroxide increased in both leaves and stem of H. ammodendron growing on polluted soils with significant decline in nitrate and oxalate content. Plants that were grown in contaminated soils have enhanced activity of antioxidant enzymes like catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and superoxide dismutase (SOD). In addition, the content of secondary compounds including total phenols, tannins, saponins and alkaloids increased significantly in plants growing on polluted soils as compared to the plants growing on normal soil. The expression patterns of genes including heavy metal ATPase (HMA4), phytochelatin synthase (PCS1), heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and zinc transporter (ZIP4) also showed considerable increase in the plants growing on polluted soils as compared to the plants gown in unpolluted soil. The instant study reveals that heavy metal and agrochemical pollution has significant influence on the growth and metabolism of H. ammodendron visà-vis has the potential to up-regulate tolerance mechanisms to alleviate the damaging effects of heavy metals and agrochemicals. The massive application of agrochemicals and associated environmental residues greatly threaten human health. Cardiac dysfunction, as a major contributing factor to human mortality, is increasingly reported in health risk assessments to be associated with agrochemical exposure. In this mini-review, we summarize the cardiotoxicity of various agrochemicals including herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and acaricides on zebrafish embryos/larvae and systematically discuss the role of cardiac development-related pathway disorders, imbalance in Ca2+ homeostasis, mitochondrial dysfunction, and general negative effects such as oxidative stress and apoptosis. Moreover, the crosstalk identified in combined analysis of predisposing factors of cardiac dysfunction not only explains the coexistence of multiple negative effects after agrochemical exposure, but also helps researchers identify key factors in predisposing cardiotoxicity as well as provides a theoretical basis for the diagnosis and treatment of certain congenital cardiac diseases. Glyphosate is the most widely used active ingredient (AI) in thousands of glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) worldwide. Short-term impacts of AIs or GBHs on earthworms are well known, but few studies have examined long-term legacy effects >3 months after application. In a pot experiment, we studied both short-term and long-term effects on deep burrowing earthworms (Lumbricus terrestris) and soil functions. Therefore, the cover crop Sinapis alba was grown in soils with either 3.0% or 4.1% soil organic matter content (SOM) and either sprayed with a GBH (Touchdown Quattro, Roundup PowerFlex, or Roundup LB Plus) or the respective glyphosate AI (diammonium-, potassium-, or isopropylamine-salt) or hand weeded (control). Long-term effects showed increased earthworm activity under GBHs even 4 months after application, but similar activity under AIs and control. Another application of the same treatments 5 months after the previous one also increased earthworm activity under GBHs, especially at high SOM levels. Water infiltration after a simulated heavy rainfall was 50% lower, and leaching was 30% higher under GBH than under AI application or hand weeding. Individual GBHs and AIs varied in their effects and were influenced by SOM and soil moisture. This article ethnographically analyses the phenomenon of agrochemical spraying in rural school contexts of the Argentine Humid Pampas. The analysis is guided by a Gramscian approach and is based on fieldwork carried out in the southeastern region of the province of Córdoba (Argentina). On analyzing the daily experiences of these teachers with pesticide spraying not only the conditions of the hegemonic landscape in which they work become evident but also their active positioning in relation to the problem. These positions are expressed through heterogeneous, disjointed, and even contradictory practices and senses, but in which it is possible to identify the plots of the broader social dispute around the problem of intensive agrochemical use. Caecilians (Gymnophiona) are commonly known as limbless amphibians and are the least understood vertebrate order. In this paper, we documented skin color, eye, jaw, snout, tentacular aperture and cloacal anomalies in 12 individuals of four species belonging to the three caecilian genera Ichthyophis, Uraeotyphlus and Gegeneophis collected from hotspots of caecilian diversity in India, the Western Ghats and Northeast India. As we found the majority of these individuals in coffee and tea plantations, we discuss the possibility that anomalies are the result of exposure to agrochemicals that are frequently used in plantations. Purpose: This paper aims to illustrate the growing importance of agricultural robots by providing details of recent product developments and their applications. Design/methodology/approach: Following a short introduction, this first discusses a range of agricultural applications of drones. It then provides details of a selection of mobile field robots and their applications. Finally, concluding comments are drawn. Findings: Commercially available aerial and terrestrial robots are playing a rapidly growing role in a diversity of agricultural practices. Key capabilities and benefits include detecting crop stress and disease, predicting crop yields, reducing agrochemical use, overcoming manpower shortages and reducing labour costs and facilitating precision agricultural practices such as highly localised pesticide and herbicide application and the replacement of large, heavy agricultural machines by fleets of small, lightweight robots. Ecological engineering using linear flower strips is proposed as an alternative to insecticide-based rice pest management. However, its success depends on farmers' appreciations of related interventions as part of an ecosystem restoration process. We examined agronomic and pest management responses to flower strips among 305 farmers surveyed at 12 villages in the Mekong Delta Region (MDR) of Vietnam. Practices by conventional farmers at the same villages were used as a baseline. The ecological engineering farmers mainly integrated flower strips with pest management practices by reducing insecticide applications before 40 days after rice crop establishment (ca 38% of farmers; 9% more than on conventional farms). Flower strips were also associated with less frequent and irregular insecticide applications or with insecticide-free rice (i.e., possibly IPM: ca 19% of ecological engineering farmers). Otherwise, farmers (ca 43% of ecological engineering farmers) continued to apply insecticides prophylactically and, in some cases, applied more insecticides than their conventional neighbors. Flower strips were not associated with reductions in any other pesticides. Reported yields were not directly affected by flower strips or pesticide inputs. Our results suggest that ecological engineering was not widely regarded by participating farmers as an ecosystem restoration practice, but rather, as a pest management action. Further promotion of flower strips as a component of ecosystem restoration is required to break the lock-in to pesticide use at ecologically engineered rice farms in the MDR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The increasing area under paddy crop, excessive groundwater pumping, over-use of agrochemicals (fertilizers and pesticides) and increasing area under paddy residue burning have become the key contributors of increased carbon emission (CE) and carbon footprint (CF) in Punjab state. After agrochemicals (71.7% CE), residue burning (16.4% CE) was recorded to be the largest contributor of CE in the state, followed by irrigation (6.9% CE). Among the three major zones, CE was recorded to be 13.4%, 58.5% and 28.1% in the North-West, Central and South-West zone, respectively, with being highest and lowest in Central and North-West zone, respectively. The average annual CF (t CO2 eq/t) was recorded to be 1.11 ± 0.23, 0.94 ± 0.05 and 0.99 ± 0.06 t CO2 eq/t for North-West, Central and South-West zones, respectively, with a total value of 3.04 ± 0.34 t CO2 eq/t at state level. On average, CF of the state indicated an increasing trend from 0.96 t CO2 eq/t in 2017–2018 to 1.09 t CO2 eq/t in 2019–2020. The higher CF values indicated higher GHGS emission in relation to groundwater pumping, fertilizer and pesticide applications, mechanical operations and post-harvest residue burning. Although rice production is very much needed for food security of the region, however, the quantitative and qualitative depletions of available resources (water, soil fertility, air quality, etc.) have started imposing negative impacts on agricultural production and environment. Thus, there is a need to take immediate remedial measures and reduce the over-exploitation of groundwater, over-use of fertilizers and pesticides, and burning of post-harvest paddy residue in the state. Human populations and ecosystems are extensively exposed to pesticides. Most nations lack the capacity to control pesticide contamination and have limited availability of pesticide use information. Ecuador is a country with intense pesticide use with high exposure risks to humans and the environment, although relative or combined risks are not well understood. Here, we analyzed the distribution of application rates in Ecuador and identified regions of concern because of high potential exposure. We used a geospatial analysis to identify grid cells (∼8 km × 8 km) where the highest pesticide application rates and density of human populations overlap. Furthermore, we identified other regions of concern based on the number of amphibian species as an indicator of ecosystem integrity and the location of natural protected areas. We found that 28% of Ecuador's population dwelled in areas with high pesticide application rate. We identified an area of ∼512 km2 in the Amazon region where high application rates, large human settlements, and a high number of amphibian species overlapped. Additionally, we distinguished clusters of pesticide application rates and human populations that intersected with natural protected areas. Ecuador exemplifies how pesticides are disproportionately applied in areas with the potential to affect human health and ecosystems' integrity. Global estimates of population dwelling, pesticide application rates, and environmental factors are key in prioritizing locations to conduct further exposure assessments. The modular and scalable nature of the geospatial tools we developed can be expanded and adapted to other regions of the world where data on pesticide use are limited. Plain Language Summary: Pesticide exposures are a concerning issue that threatens ecosystem integrity and human health. However, most countries cannot assess, monitor, and control pesticide contamination. We studied this threat in Ecuador, a country with one of the highest application rates of pesticides worldwide, an export‐bound agricultural industry, a large population at risk, remarkable biodiversity, and a limited understanding of the nationwide extent of pesticide contamination. We assessed the geographic distribution of pesticide application rates and identified regions where the potential risk of exposure to human populations and ecosystems requires detailed exposure assessments. Using publicly available global data sets that locate human populations, biodiversity, natural parks, and pesticide use rates, we mapped areas where high levels of pesticide use and high density of human population overlap. We also assessed areas where natural parks and amphibian species may be threatened. Around 28% of Ecuador's population lived in areas with a high pesticide application rate. We found widespread intensive use of pesticides in Ecuador in regions that overlap with human populations and ecosystems at risk of exposure. Over the last few decades, agrochemicals have been partially associated with a global reduction in bees' population. Toxicological assessment is therefore crucial for understanding the overall agrochemical risks to stingless bees. Therefore, the lethal and sublethal effects of agrochemicals commonly used in crops (copper sulfate, glyphosate, and spinosad) on the behavior and gut microbiota of the stingless bee, Partamona helleri, were assessed using chronic exposure during the larval stage. When used at the field-recommended rates, both copper sulfate (200 µg of active ingredient/bee; a.i µg bee−1) and spinosad (8.16 a.i µg bee−1) caused a decrease in bee survival, while glyphosate (148 a.i µg bee−1) did not show any significant effects. No significant adverse effects on bee development were observed in any treatment with CuSO4 or glyphosate, but spinosad (0.08 or 0.03 a.i µg bee −1) increased the number of deformed bees and reduced their body mass. Agrochemicals changed the behavior of bees and composition of the gut microbiota of adult bees, and metals such as copper accumulated in the bees' bodies. The response of bees to agrochemicals depends on the class or dose of the ingested compound. Cocoa is one of the major cash crops in Nigeria and its production is directly related to the effective utilization of agrochemicals. This paper analysed the factors influencing cocoa farmers' compliance with agrochemical safety regulations. The data were collected from 326 cocoa farmers from Ogun and Osun states, using multi-stage sampling procedures. The data were analysed with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and an Endogenous Tobit Regression model. The results showed that majority of the farmers were primarily growing cocoa and average ownership of personal protective equipment (PPE) was less than two. Awareness of manufacturers' instructions was high for insecticides and fungicides, while majority of the farmers were not eating or drinking while handling agrochemicals. Safety compliance indicators were significantly influenced (p < 0.10) by farmers' ownership of PPE, education, age, awareness of manufacturers' safety instructions and health status. It was concluded that utilization of PPE was very low among the farmers and efforts to facilitate safety training on the use of different agrochemicals will facilitate safety compliance through proper understanding of manufacturers' instructions. There are multiple in vitro and ex vivo eye irritation and corrosion test methods that are available as internationally harmonized test guidelines for regulatory use. Despite their demonstrated usefulness to a broad range of substances through inter-laboratory validation studies, they have not been widely adopted for testing agrochemical formulations due to a lack of concordance with parallel results from the traditional regulatory test method for this endpoint, the rabbit eye test. The inherent variability of the rabbit test, differences in the anatomy of the rabbit and human eyes, and differences in modelling exposures in rabbit eyes relative to human eyes contribute to this lack of concordance. Ultimately, the regulatory purpose for these tests is protection of human health, and, thus, there is a need for a testing approach based on human biology. This paper reviews the available in vivo, in vitro and ex vivo test methods with respect to their relevance to human ocular anatomy, anticipated exposure scenarios, and the mechanisms of eye irritation/corrosion in humans. Each of the in vitro and ex vivo methods described is generally appropriate for identifying non-irritants. To discriminate among eye irritants, the human three-dimensional epithelial and full thickness corneal models provide the most detailed information about the severity of irritation. Consideration of the mechanisms of eye irritation, and the strengths and limitations of the in vivo, in vitro and ex vivo test methods, show that the in vitro/ex vivo methods are as or more reflective of human biology and less variable than the currently used rabbit approach. Suggestions are made for further optimizing the most promising methods to distinguish between severe (corrosive), moderate, mild and non-irritants and provide information about the reversibility of effects. Also considered is the utility of including additional information (e.g. physical chemical properties), consistent with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's guidance document on an integrated approach to testing and assessment of potential eye irritation. Combining structural and functional information about a test substance with test results from human-relevant methods will ensure the best protection of humans following accidental eye exposure to agrochemicals. Agrochemicals such as herbicides change the physical and chemical conditions of aquatic ecosystems and alter the community structure and dynamics of phytoplankton. Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic organisms found at the base of aquatic food chains. When cyanobacteria form blooms and produce toxins, they harm humans and the environment. Herbicides contaminate the aquatic environment when they are leached and transported via surface runoff from farms and industries. In this review, we show that these compounds have different mechanisms of action, but at high concentrations, they cause oxidative stress, interfere with the normal functioning of enzymes, and change the metabolic profile of microalgae and cyanobacteria. This paper demonstrates that at environmentally relevant concentrations, some herbicides facilitate the formation of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs). The formation of blooms is driven by the tolerance of cyanobacteria to herbicides, where some of these compounds are degraded and converted into non-toxic forms. The degradation by-products are also used as a source of nutrients to support cyanobacterial growth. This adaptation sometimes leads to higher concentrations of bioactive compounds such as cyanotoxins in the aquatic environment. The increased levels of cyanotoxins and herbicides in water bodies can trigger a cascading toxicological effect on non-targeted organisms and the aquatic food chain. Despite the evidence confirming herbicides influence the growth of cyanobacteria and alter the structure of the phytoplankton community toward the formation of cyanoHABs, there is a lot that remains to be done to fully understand their impact on these organisms. How do subsistence communities conceptualize their seed sovereignty? What do peasants perceive to be the principal threats to their seed sovereignty and how do they respond to these threats?; and How do local seed sovereignty initiatives relate to the broader ideologies, goals, and strategies of the global seed sovereignty movement? Local conceptions of seeds as a commons are contributing to a multidimensional decommodification project of peasant agriculture and indigenous autonomy. I analyze one particular initiative targeting environmental deterioration and climate change, two of the most salient threats to these communities' seed sovereignty: efforts to halt widespread chemicalization of subsistence agriculture. A total of 39 novel cyclotryptamine alkaloid derivatives were prepared from 2-(1H-indol-3-yl) acetonitrile. The prepared compounds were evaluated against six plant pathogen fungi. Bioassay results revealed that most of the compounds displayed higher in vitro antifungal activities than the positive control. Notably, compound b2 displayed the broadest and most effective activity among the tested cyclotryptamine alkaloid derivatives and might be a novel potential leading compound for further development as an antifungal agent. It also anticipated that it would become a driving economic force shortly. Nanotechnology has the potential to reduce agricultural inputs, enrich the soil by absorbing nutrients, manage plant diseases, and detect diseases. The aim of the present review is to cover the potential aspects of nanoscience and its trend-setting appliances in modern agriculture and food production. This review focuses on the impact of various nanomaterials on plant health to improve agricultural production and its cooperative approach to food production. Botrytis cinerea, Rhizoctonia solani and Hemileia vastatrix are three species of phytopathogenic fungi behind major crop losses worldwide. These have been selected as target models for testing the fungicide potential of a series of bis(ylidene) cyclohexanones. Although some compounds of this chemical class are known to have inhibitory activity against human pathogens, they have never been explored for the control of phytopathogens until now. In the present work, bis(ylidene) cyclohexanones were synthesized through simple, fast and low-cost base- or acid-catalyzed aldol condensation reaction and tested in vitro against B. cinerea, R. solani and H. vastatrix. bis(pyridylmethylene) cyclohexanones showed the highest activity against the target fungi. When tested at 200 nmol per mycelial plug against R. solani., these compounds completely inhibited the mycelial growth, and the most active bis(pyridylmethylene) cyclohexanone compound had an IC50 of 155.5 nmol plug−1. Additionally, bis(pyridylmethylene) cyclohexanones completely inhibited urediniospore germination of H. vastatrix, at 125 μmol L−1. The most active bis(pyridylmethylene) cyclohexanone had an IC50 value of 4.8 µmol L−1, which was estimated as approximately 2.6 times lower than that found for the copper oxychloride-based fungicide, used as control. Additionally, these substances had a low cytotoxicity against the mammalian Vero cell line. Finally, in silico calculations indicated that these compounds present physicochemical parameters regarded as suitable for agrochemicals. Currently, modern lifestyle diseases (LSD) such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular and thyroid disease are commonly seen among people of different age groups. One of the root causes of this LSD is the type of food that we are eating. Staple crops like rice, sugarcane, vegetables and wheat are grown with the application of agrochemicals (e.g., glyphosate), traces of which are found in our food; after that, it gets ultra‐processed in factories; e.g., chips and snacks are fried using saturated fats (trans fat); sugar and wheat (derivatives bread, buns, cookies) are processed using toxic chemicals (bleaching agents). As a result, the nutritional value of food is compromised due to low dietary fiber content and synthetic additives – e.g., sucralose (artificial sweetener) – which promotes inflammation and weakens our immune system, causing our body to become sensitive to microbial infection and many other LSDs. To strengthen the immune system, people start taking synthetically prepared supplements and drugs for a prolonged time, which further deteriorates the body organs and their normal function; e.g., prolonged medication for hypothyroidism poses a risk of heart attack and joint pain. Nanotechnology solves the above problems in the food, nutraceuticals and agriculture sectors. Nanotechnology‐based naturally processed products such as nano‐nutraceuticals, nanofood, nanofertilizers and nanopesticides will benefit our health. Nonpoint source pollution from agricultural runoff which contains hazardous agrochemicals like pesticides and fertilizers threatens water bodies, posing a serious danger to aquatic ecosystems and drinking water resources. Use of agrochemicals in rice cultivation has rapidly increased in the last few decades in Sri Lanka. It has been reported that many agrochemicals contain toxic trace elements like As, Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, Al, etc. To reduce the harmful effect of heavy metal containing agrochemicals, the Government of Sri Lanka has banned the use of several toxic agrochemicals in recent years. In this context, this study was conducted after posing these restrictions to assess the occurrence of heavy metals in surface water bodies in rice cultivation areas in Trincomalee district, Sri Lanka. Ninety-three (n = 93) sample locations were randomly selected for collection of water, before and after applying agrochemicals to rice fields. This include areas from rural farming communities having endemic (Padavi Sripura DS) and non-endemic (Kanthala DS and Seruvila DS) Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown etiology (CKDu). Mean and standard error of mean of As, Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn concentrations (µg/L) before and after applying agrochemicals were as {0.048 ± 0.038 and 6.220 ± 0.912}, {0.014 ± 0.013 and 0.371 ± 0.192}, {not detected and 4.421 ± 0.712}, {1.583 ± 0.397 and 1.262 ± 0.165} and {not detected and 6.403 ± 0.366}, respectively. Findings revealed that concentrations of As, Cd, Pb and Zn were significantly different (p < 0.001) before and after the application of agrochemicals. However, the observed heavy metal concentrations were far below the permissible levels for irrigation water set by Food and Agriculture Organization and United States Environmental Protection Agency, ambient water quality set by Central Environmental Authority, and drinking water quality set by World Health Organization. In addition, analyzed heavy metal concentrations in surface water samples from CKDu endemic areas were not significantly different from those from non-endemic areas (p < 0.05). To our knowledge, this is the first report of heavy metal analysis after government ban of agrochemicals. Therefore, continuous detailed research is required to fully comprehend the behavior of agrochemicals in surface water bodies in Sri Lanka. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
