Produced by both nature and human activities, sulfur dioxide (SO2) is an important species in the earth's atmosphere. SO2 has also been found in the atmospheres of other planets and satellites in the solar system. The photoabsorption cross sections and photodissociation of SO2 have been studied for several decades. In this paper, we reported the experimental results for photodissociation dynamics of SO2 via the G ̃ 1B1 state. By analyzing the images from the time-sliced velocity map ion imaging method, the vibrational state population distributions and anisotropy parameters were obtained for the O(1D2) + SO(X3Σ−, a1Δ, b1Σ+) and O(1S0) + SO(X3Σ−) channels, and the branching ratios for the channels O(1D2) + SO(X3Σ−), O(1D2) + SO(a1Δ), and O(1D2) + SO(b1Σ+) were determined to be ∼0.3, ∼0.6, and ∼0.1, respectively. The SO products were dominant in electronically and rovibrationally excited states, which may have yet unrecognized roles in the upper planetary atmosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present relativistic magnetohydrodynamic modelling of jets running into hydrostatic, spherically symmetric cluster atmospheres. For the first time in a numerical simulation, we present model cluster atmospheres based upon the universal pressure profile (UPP), incorporating a temperature profile for a 'typical' self-similar atmosphere described by only one parameter – M 500. We explore a comprehensive range of realistic atmospheres and jet powers and derive dynamic, energetic, and polarimetric data which provide insight into what we should expect of future high-resolution studies of AGN outflows. From the simulated synchrotron emission maps which include Doppler beaming we find sidedness distributions that agree well with observations. We replicated a number of findings from our previous work, such as higher power jets inflating larger aspect-ratio lobes, and the cluster environment impacting the distribution of energy between the lobe and shocked regions. Comparing UPP and β-profiles we find that the cluster model chosen results in a different morphology for the resultant lobes with the UPP more able to clear lobe material from the core; and that these different atmospheres influence the ratio between the various forms of energy in the fully developed lobes. This work also highlights the key role played by Kelvin–Helmholtz instabilities in the formation of realistic lobe aspect ratios. Our simulations point to the need for additional lobe-widening mechanisms at high jet powers, for example jet precession. Given that the UPP is our most representative general cluster atmosphere, these numerical simulations represent the most realistic models yet for spherically symmetric atmospheres. This paper is intended to summarize the research conducted during the first 2 years of the Dragon 5 project 59,332 (geophysical and atmospheric retrieval from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data stacks over natural scenarios). Monitoring atmospheric phenomena, encompassing both tropospheric and ionospheric conditions, holds pivotal significance for various scientific and practical applications. In this paper, we present an exploration of advanced techniques for estimating tropospheric and ionospheric phase screens using stacks of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. Our study delves into the current state-of-the-art in atmospheric monitoring with a focus on spaceborne SAR systems, shedding light on their evolving capabilities. For tropospheric phase screen estimation, we propose a novel approach that jointly estimates the tropospheric component from all the images. We discuss the methodology in detail, highlighting its ability to recover accurate tropospheric maps. Through a series of quantitative case studies using real Sentinel-1 satellite data, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our technique in capturing tropospheric variability over different geographical regions. Concurrently, we delve into the estimation of ionospheric phase screens utilizing SAR image stacks. The intricacies of ionospheric disturbances pose unique challenges, necessitating specialized techniques. We dissect our approach, showcasing its capacity to mitigate ionospheric noise and recover precise phase information. Real data from the Sentinel-1 satellite are employed to showcase the efficacy of our method, unraveling ionospheric perturbations with improved accuracy. The integration of our techniques, though presented separately for clarity, collectively contributes to a comprehensive framework for atmospheric monitoring. Our findings emphasize the potential of SAR-based approaches in advancing our knowledge of atmospheric processes, thus fostering advancements in weather prediction, geophysics, and environmental management. This paper reviews how excessive lighting in historical sites can negatively affect the enjoyment of social gatherings. Because light pollution has the potential to affect socialization negatively, we need the appropriate tools to handle these effects. As part of this research, three techniques were used to analyze these effects: a bibliographical examination of relevant concepts, field measurements of illumination levels at historical sites in Cairo, Egypt, as well as questionnaires sent out to users around the world to determine what influences their perceptions of historical sites at night. Based on the results of a systematic review, we developed the concept of toolkits for creating a lively ambiance for evening events. Furthermore, based on the spatial measurements made in the case study, it was determined that the challenge of visual pollution hinders creating a vibrant atmosphere at historical sites. An online survey that investigated the factors influencing the enjoyment of historical sites at night around the world found that positioning the lighting fixtures and illumination is one of the most critical factors. The results of the current study confirm that the urban form of the context provides a pleasant visual and perceptual experience at night as well. The findings of this study have led to three design considerations that can help urban planners and designers when it comes to implementing lighting in public spaces. As a result of these considerations, the historical site in the case study, Al-Hussein Square, Cairo, presents a livelier ambiance at night; hence they can be used by urban designers to enhance the ambiance in similar settings to the present case study. This paper is concerned with exploring legal atmospheres during colonial expansionism and the early period of confederation of British Columbia. By describing the theatrical and performative aspects of legal colonialism, the archival documents from this time represent interesting, yet oft-overlooked, significances that attention to sensory and affective experiences captures. Examining "affective atmospheres" disclosed in such colonial settings reveals ways that the colonial regime promulgated its influence in non-rational, non-legal manners. As well, drawing out the material conditions of topography shows how the environment acts more than just a backdrop for the staging of legal expansionism, as it acts also as a constitutive force in the development of colonial legal arrangements. At the same time, the colonial regime was forgetful of these same contextual, topographical, and atmospheric origins of law insofar as it promulgated myths of the universality, objectivity, and superiority of English law. In the Earth's atmosphere, greenhouse gases (GHGs) and reactive trace gases are essential components of chemistry–climate interactions. These trace gases are emitted from both natural and anthropogenic sources over terrestrial and marine regions. Air–sea exchange is the dominant process controlling the distribution of several important trace gases over remote marine regions. Although the ocean–atmosphere interface covers ~70% of the Earth's surface, the quantitative air–sea exchange of reactive trace gases is estimated over the limited oceanic regions. The production and air–sea exchange of trace gases are controlled by physical conditions at both sides of the interface and ocean biogeochemistry. The northern Indian Ocean (NIO) experiences strong seasonal monsoon winds and intense tropical cyclones. Consisting of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, it is one of the most biologically productive regimes of the world ocean and home to the intense oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) of the Arabian Sea with dissolved oxygen concentrations. Thus, the NIO offers a unique system to investigate the air–sea exchange processes of reactive trace gases. So far, most of the studies of air–sea exchange of trace gases is focused on the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, while studies over the northern Indian Ocean are very limited and reported mainly for CH4, CO2 and N2O. Although progress has been made in recent years, studies of air–sea exchange of reactive trace gases such as non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHCs), oxygen-, sulfur- and halogen-containing hydrocarbons remain scarce. This paper addresses the current understanding of air–sea exchange processes and fluxes of reactive trace gases, including NMHCs, dimethyl sulfide (DMS), oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs), halocarbons, carbon monoxide (CO) and ozone (O3) in the northern Indian Ocean. This review summarizes the studies on the air–sea exchange of trace gases over the northern Indian Ocean and common parametrization approaches used to estimate the air–sea flux of gases. Flux range for ethene (3–10.35 µmol m–2 d–1), isoprene (0.215–0.172 µmol m–2 d–1), acetaldehyde (–6.75–11.35 µmol m–2 d–1), acetone (–9–9 µmol m–2 d–1), DMS (0.03–41.4 µmol m–2 d–1) and CO (1.4–5.4 µmol m–2 d–1) over the NIO were summarized from various in-situ and modelling studies. The paper addresses the importance of the northern Indian Ocean apropos the production and exchange of reactive trace gases, the knowledge gaps and the future scientific scope. Additionally, it emphasizes the need for a multidisciplinary study of oceanic reactive trace gas cycling and its impact on regional atmospheric chemistry over the northern Indian Ocean. Powerful lightning strikes generate broadband electromagnetic signals. At Extremely Low Frequencies (ELF), the signal partly leaks into the ionosphere and produces whistlers that can be detected by satellites. Indeed, the satellites of the European Space Agency (ESA) Swarm Earth Explorer mission can detect those signals during 250 Hz burst‐mode acquisition campaigns of their Absolute Scalar Magnetometers (ASM). The dispersion of these whistlers depends on their propagation path and the distribution of ionization in the ionosphere crossed along that path. In this paper, we introduce a technique to derive a new measure of ionosphere electron content, the Total square‐Root Electron Content (TREC), using the arrival times of two frequencies of the whistler signal. We validate this approach by using data from ionosondes and from in situ measurements of the electron density at Swarm location. This technique brings new opportunities for sounding the ionosphere in regions poorly observed by other techniques. Plain Language Summary: A lightning strike generates an electromagnetic impulse that propagates within Earth's atmosphere and eventually leaks out into the ionosphere. As it propagates through the ionosphere toward low‐Earth orbiting (LEO) satellites, it gets converted into a so‐called whistler, with high frequencies arriving earlier than low frequencies. This frequency dispersion depends on the state of the ionosphere. Here, we analyse such whistler waves detected by magnetometers onboard the European Space Agency Swarm satellites to recover information about the state of the ionosphere below the satellites. We first introduce a new metric, the Total Root Electron Content (TREC), which quantifies the cumulative value of the square root of electron density along the path of the whistler. We next propose a method to recover the TREC from the analysis of the whistler dispersion. We finally validate this method by using independently derived ionospheric electron density profiles to infer expected TREC values. Our results show that whistlers detected by LEO satellites can be used to locally improve the widely used empirical International Reference Ionosphere model. Such whistler inferred TREC values could be used to sound the ionosphere above places difficult to sample with conventional measuring techniques, and help better model and understand the highly dynamic ionosphere. This study investigates the effects of sea spray on extreme precipitation forecast in Beijing of China between 28 July and 2 August 2023 as a case test. In this case, fully coupled model increased upward moisture in the Bohai and Yellow Seas and increased accumulated rainfall by 21% in North China. For the extreme precipitation events with the 5‐day accumulated precipitation exceeding 500 mm, the atmosphere‐only model did not forecast the events; the coupled model without sea spray performed well with the 0.29 threat score (TS) and 88 mm root mean square error (RMSE); in the fully coupled model, the effects of sea spray increased atmospheric instability, which increased the precipitation around Beijing and yielded a more accurate forecast with the 0.37 TS and 65 mm RMSE. This paper suggests a scientific clue to improve numerical simulation for extreme rainfall events, however, more cases are still needed for statistical evaluation. Plain Language Summary: Although meteorological forecasting ability has been improved considerably during the past decades, precipitation during extreme events remains typically underestimated. Improving model accuracy for heavy rainfall events is, indeed, a ground challenge. In this study, we conducted three numerical experiments under different conditions to evaluate the effects of sea spray on extreme precipitation forecasts for the Beijing extreme rainfall event between 28 July and 2 August 2023. Our results indicated that for this 5‐day forecasting case, including sea spray in the simulations enhanced precipitation in North China by transporting more moisture from the Bohai and Yellow Seas upward into the atmosphere. The moister and warmer air caused by sea spray effects was transported to Beijing through northwestward wind and lifted by the local terrain, then caused a more unstable atmosphere and higher intensity of precipitation around Beijing. By using statistical indicators and setting different precipitation thresholds for this extreme rainfall case, we determined that in this case, the fully coupled model including sea spray yielded more accurate forecast. To statistically evaluate the effects of sea spray in extreme precipitation forecasts, more cases are still needed. The Stratospheric Total Aerosol Counter (STAC) is a lightweight balloon‐borne instrument that utilizes condensational growth techniques to measure the total aerosol concentration. STAC is a miniaturized version of the legacy Wyoming condensation particle counter that operated from 1974 through 2020 in the middle latitudes and polar regions, with a few measurements in the tropics. Here we provide a description of the STAC instrument and the total aerosol measurement record, demonstrating that typical total aerosol profiles exhibit a peak in number mixing ratio, with values between 800 and 2,000 particles per mg of air (mg−1), just below the lapse rate tropopause (LRT). In the tropics and middle latitudes, mixing ratios decrease above the LRT likely due to coagulation and scavenging that results in a transfer of mass to the fewer but larger aerosol particles of the Junge layer. Exceptions to this occur in the spring time in the middle latitudes where a new particle layer between 20 and 25 km is frequently observed. In the poles, total aerosol profiles exhibit two distinct features: new particle formation in austral spring, and an increasing mixing ratio above 17 km likely due to the presence of meteoric smoke that has been concentrated within the polar vortex. High observed stratospheric particle mixing ratios, in excess of 2,000 mg−1, are observed in the polar new particle layer and at the top of polar profiles. These particles are important to the radiation balance of Earth as well as chemical processes that occur in the atmosphere. Particles with diameters greater than about 50 nm are detectable by a wide variety of scientific instruments using various techniques to measure light scattered by the particles. Particles smaller than this need to be grown to larger diameters before their concentration can be measured, and therefore these measurements must be done in situ. This paper describes the design and capabilities of an instrument, the Stratospheric Total Aerosol Counter, that makes in situ measurements from high‐altitude balloons of the total aerosol concentration. Versions of this instrument have been flown around the globe since 1974. The second portion of this paper provides an overview of the total aerosol concentration record since 1989, comprising more than 250 profiles. The key findings are that in tropical regions there is a significant source of particles from the total aerosol concentration maximum at the top of the troposphere. In this paper, we explore different prognostic methods to account for skin sea surface temperature diurnal variations in a coupled ocean–atmosphere regional model of the Mediterranean Sea. Our aim is to characterise the sensitivity of the considered methods with respect to the underlying assumption of how the solar radiation shapes the warm layer of the ocean. All existing prognostic methods truncate solar transmission coefficient at a warm-layer reference depth that is constant in space and time; instead, we implement a new scheme where this latter is estimated from a chlorophyll dataset as the e -folding depth of solar transmission, which thus allows it to vary in space and time depending on seawater's transparency conditions. Comparison against satellite data shows that our new scheme, compared to the one already implemented within the ocean model, improves the spatially averaged diurnal signal, especially during winter, and the seasonally averaged one in spring and autumn, while showing a monthly basin-wide averaged bias smaller than 0.1 K year-round. In April, when most of the drifters' measurements are available, the new scheme mitigates the bias during nighttime, keeping it positive but smaller than 0.12 K during the rest of the monthly averaged day. The new scheme implemented within the ocean model improves the old one by about 0.1 K, particularly during June. All the methods considered here showed differences with respect to objectively analysed profiles confined between 0.5 K during winter and 1 K in summer for both the eastern and the western Mediterranean regions, especially over the uppermost 60 m. The new scheme reduces the RMSE on the top 15 m in the central Mediterranean for summertime months compared to the scheme already implemented within the ocean model. Overall, the surface net total heat flux shows that the use of a skin sea surface temperature (SST) parameterisation brings the budget about 1.5 Wm-2 closer to zero on an annual basis, despite all simulations showing an annual net heat loss from the ocean to the atmosphere. Our "chlorophyll-interactive" method proved to be an effective enhancement of existing methods, its strength relying on an improved physical consistency with the solar extinction implemented in the ocean component. The divergence method, a lightweight approach for estimating emission fluxes from satellite images, rests on a few implicit assumptions. This paper explicitly outlines these assumptions by deriving the method from first principles. The assumptions are: the enhanced mass flux is dominated by advection, normal fluxes vanish at the top and bottom of the atmosphere, steady‐state conditions apply, sources are multiplications of temporal and spatial functions, sinks are described as first‐order reactions, and effective wind fields are concentration‐weighted wind fields. No such assumptions have to be made for the background field. A "topography correction term" does not follow from the theory, but is rather shown to be a practical correction for topography‐dependent effective wind speed errors. The cross‐sectional flux method follows naturally from the derived theory, and the methods are compared. Effects of discrete pixels and finite‐difference operations are explored, leading to recommendations, primarily the recommendation to integrate over small regions only to minimize the influence of noise. Numerical examples featuring Gaussian plumes and COSMO‐GHG simulated plumes are provided. The Gaussian plume example suggests that the divergence method might underestimate emissions when assuming only advection in the presence of cross‐wind diffusion. Conversely, the cross‐sectional flux method remains unaffected, provided fluxes are integrated across the entire plume. The COSMO‐GHG example reveals frequent violations of the steady‐state assumption, although the assumption remains valid proximal to the source (<20 km in this example). It is the hope that this paper provides a solid theoretical foundation for the divergence and cross‐sectional flux methods. Plain Language Summary: Power plants, megacities, and other regions can be places where considerable amounts of gases are emitted into the atmosphere. Satellite data is capable of recording the enhanced concentrations in the atmosphere due to these sources. How does one estimate emissions of these sources based on this data? Typically by running an atmospheric inverse model; but one computationally lightweight method gaining popularity is the "divergence method." With this method, one applies a simple mathematical operation to the satellite image multiplied by the horizontal wind speeds—the result of which is related to the emissions. The method has been used before, but here we systematically state the assumptions involved; factors like how gases are transported horizontally and over time, and what happens when we apply the method on pixelated data (such as satellite images). We find that some other analyses in the literature may be partially incorrect. Another popular method (the "cross‐sectional flux") is easily derived from the same theory. Synthetic examples are used to illustrate that various assumptions are not met in realistic data; although the examples also show that one can work around these limitations by a careful application of the methods, and by acquiring more estimates over many days. For the requirements of the multi-means observation and emergency monitoring of space objects, including space debris and near-earth asteroids, this paper analyzes the astronomical observation conditions in the stratosphere, which is the region of the earth's atmosphere between 18 km and 55 km of altitude. The results reveal that near space has a significantly superior sky background and observation environment than ground-based observation, with the values of transmittance in the visible band and near-infrared bands more than 0.91 and 0.988, respectively. The sky background radiance at 20 km is 2.5% of the ground in the visible band and near-infrared band, which is practical for daytime observation, and there is an advantage in the availability of observable hours without the influence of aerosols and turbulence, etc. Based on near-space aerostats, such as a high-altitude balloon, a new method of space object floating observation has been proposed, including the observation facilities and scheme. The simulation shows that it has an all-weather/all-day ability while adopting multi-band observation. Applying a telescope with 9.5 mag detective ability located on the aerostat, debris with the size of about 0.36 m can be observed at a 1000 km distance and phase angle of 100°, while the near-earth asteroid with the size of about 980 km can be observed at a 5 million km distance and phase angle of 40° during the daytime. With these advantages, the aerostat-based observation would be a beneficial supplement to the ground-based observation network. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: How can human–animal studies benefit from philosophy, especially the new phenomenology, which was founded by Hermann Schmitz? This article discuss that question, using the example of human–horse relationships. Based on the results of qualitative social research, three basic concepts of new phenomenology are empirically examined and transferred to human–horse encounters: embodied communication, atmosphere, and joint situation. This article shows that the German philosopher Hermann Schmitz's new phenomenology can make a valuable contribution to human–animal studies. The three concepts suitable for this purpose are, first, Schmitz's concept of embodied communication, which can be applied to trans-species encounters; second, his understanding of atmospheres, which are always co-communicated in trans-species encounters; and, third, his conception of situation, which can help with analyzing the relationship of society to animals. My contribution applies these three basic elements of new phenomenology—embodied communication, atmosphere, and situation—to the analysis of the encounters between humans and horses. This paper demonstrates that embodied communication in particular is not only a worthwhile object of research but can also serve as a mode of producing scientific insight. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It follows from the observational data that variations of the atmospheric electric field occur during geomagnetic storms. In this paper, we present the simulation results of ionospheric electric fields during the main phase of the geomagnetic storm on March 17, 2015, within the framework of a quasi-stationary model of a conductor consisting of the atmosphere and the ionosphere. For this purpose, the satellite data on the global distribution of currents between the magnetosphere and the ionosphere are used to describe the magnetospheric source of the electric field. A variation of the electric potential in the ionosphere leads to a variation of the electric field in the entire atmosphere, including its surface layer. It is important that during a geomagnetic storm, the observatory in which the atmospheric electric field is measured significantly changes its position relative to the direction of the Sun. This leads to significant changes in the ionospheric conductivity above the observatory, which affects both the ionospheric electric field and the atmospheric part of the global electrical circuit (GEC). Therefore, when assessing the effect of a geomagnetic storm on the atmospheric electric field in a particular observatory, it is necessary to take into account the local time when comparing the measurement data with the geomagnetic activity indices. For the storm on March 17–18, 2015, we found that taking into account the variations of the ionospheric electric field when calculating the atmospheric electric field allowed us to reproduce the disturbances of the fair weather electric field observed at the Borok Geophysical Observatory. Based on the simulation results, it is shown that during extremely strong magnetic storms, additional atmospheric electric field variations in some places on the Earth have the same scale as the fair-weather field itself. The nature and extent of the main interactions between the Earth's atmosphere and the ocean are briefly reviewed, introducing the main properties of these two planetary systems, the hierarchy of timescales and spatial scales characterizing their processes, and the main mechanisms involved. To clarify these mechanisms, a few examples of exchanges of momentum, energy, and mass exchanges are briefly outlined. The paper aims at stimulating students to discover the fascinating interplay among two of the most relevant components of our planet, such as the atmosphere and the ocean, and suggests resources for further exploration. In this paper, the coherent properties of partially coherent Bessel–Gaussian optical beams propagating through a uniform medium (free space) or a turbulent atmosphere are examined theoretically. The consideration is based on the analytical solution of the equation for the transverse second-order mutual coherence function of the field of partially coherent optical radiation in a turbulent atmosphere. For the partially coherent Bessel–Gaussian beam, the second-order mutual coherence function of the source field is taken as a Gaussian–Schell model. In this approximation, we analyze the behavior of the coherence degree and the integral coherence scale of these beams as a function of the propagation pathlength, propagation conditions, and beam parameters, such as the radius of the Gauss factor of the beam, parameter of the Bessel factor of the beam, topological charge, and correlation width of the source field of partially coherent radiation. It was found that, as a partially coherent vortex Bessel–Gaussian beam propagates through a turbulent atmosphere, there appear not two (as might be expected: one due to atmospheric turbulence and another due to the partial coherence of the source field), but only one ring dislocation of the coherence degree (due to the simultaneous effect of both these factors on the optical radiation). In addition, it is shown that the dislocation of the coherence degree that significantly affects the beam coherence level is formed only for beams, for which the coherence width of the source field is larger than the diameter of the first Fresnel zone. This paper explores the ideological valence of atmosphere, grounding the notion of interpellation in investigating the widely welcomed light shows at Civic Centre in Shenzhen, China. Combining theoretical development and empirical research, this paper examines how these light shows generated particular atmospheres that impinged upon the formation of spectators' subjectivity. In a time when atmospheric staging is widely adopted to engineer urban space and events, ideological interpellation has become increasingly atmospherically diffused. Meanwhile, material contingencies and lived varieties of atmosphere also condition and potentially disturb the communication of ideological messages. Atmosphere thus needs to be considered in terms of its conceived, perceived and lived dimensions. This paper draws from Henri Lefebvre's space triad and rhythmanalysis to outline a framework for tracing the production of atmosphere, and applies it to empirical data to illustrate how light shows at Civic Centre generated ideological appeals through the atmospheric constellation of content, environmental materiality and subjects. It is through atmosphere that we grasp and imagine what the world is. In critical response to atmospheric interpellation, new modes of the reproduction of life derive not from an atmospheric outside but precisely through a reorientation from within. The H i 21 cm global signal from the Cosmic Dawn and the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) offers critical insights into the evolution of our Universe. Yet, its detection presents significant challenges, due to its extremely low signal-to-contamination ratio and complex instrumental systematics. In this paper, we examine the effects of the ionosphere and antenna beam on data analysis. The ionosphere, an ionized plasma layer in the Earth's atmosphere, refracts, absorbs, and emits radio waves in the relevant frequency range. This interaction results in additional spectral distortion of the observed signal, complicating the process of foreground subtraction. Additionally, chromatic variations in the beam can also introduce further contamination into the global spectrum measurement. Notably, the ionospheric effect, being dependent on the direction of incoming light, interacts with the instrumental beam, adding another layer of complexity. To address this, we evaluate three different fitting templates of foreground: the logarithmic polynomial, the physically motivated Experiment to Detect the Global EoR Signature (EDGES) template, and a singular value decomposition (SVD)-based template. Our findings indicate that the EDGES and SVD templates generally surpass logarithmic polynomials in performance. Recognizing the significance of beam chromaticity, we further investigate specific beam distortion models and their impacts on the signal extraction process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes an attempt to use data obtained from sodar (sound detection and ranging) for short-term forecasting of PM 10 concentration levels in Krakow. Krakow is one of the most polluted cities in central Europe (CE) in terms of PM 10 concentration. This is due to the high municipal emissions. Thanks to intensive corrective actions taken by the city authorities, these are being effectively eliminated, but the unfavourable topographic location of the city limits natural ventilation. The article describes all these conditions, focusing on presenting the method of short-term correction of air quality for the time needed to take quick corrective actions by the city authorities in the event of anticipated exceedances of the permissible values. Based on several years of measurements of the physical properties of the atmosphere with sodar, the authors of the paper suggest that sodar data could be considered for operational use to generate short-term predictions. The proposed method is based on the use of the spectrum, i.e. the set of amplitudes of signals returning to the sodar receiver from the reflection of a single-frequency sound transmission and its characteristic properties depending on the physical state of the atmosphere. Similar spectra were parameterised with a single numerical value using statistical methods. It was found that, in some cases preceding high concentrations of PM 10 , the spectral parameters had similar values. This made it possible to develop a forecasting method for such concentrations by using data mining to search for conditions in historical data closest to the state of the atmosphere at the time of forecasting. In this part of the study, data from 2017–2018 were used. In the next step, three methods of using the sodar data developed for PM 10 prediction were proposed, comparing them with the method without sodar use. The study results were tested on independent material using data concerning the episodes of high concentrations of pollutants from October 2021 to March 2022 in Krakow. Optical beam propagation through the atmosphere is suffering from turbulence condition and scattering due to the refractive index effects on propagation. In this paper, we study optical beam propagation under the UAE's weather conditions. An outdoor test was carried out to gather the atmosphere parameters (temperature, wind, humidity, and refractive index) and feed them to a beam propagation model. A new one‐dimensional variational (1D‐Var) retrieval method for ionospheric GNSS radio occultation (GNSS‐RO) measurements is described. The forward model implicit in the retrieval calculates the bending angles produced by a one‐dimensional ionospheric electron density profile, modeled with multiple "Vary‐Chap" layers. It is demonstrated that gradient based minimization techniques can be applied to this retrieval problem. The use of ionospheric bending angles is discussed. This approach circumvents the need for Differential Code Bias (DCB) estimates when using the measurements. This new, general retrieval method is applicable to both standard GNSS‐RO retrieval problems, and the truncated geometry of EUMETSAT's Metop Second Generation (Metop‐SG), which will provide GNSS‐RO measurements up to about 600 km above the surface. The climatological a priori information used in the 1D‐Var is effectively a starting point for the 1D‐Var minimization, rather than a strong constraint on the final solution. In this paper the approach has been tested with 143 COSMIC‐1 measurements. We find that the method converges in 135 of the cases, but around 25 of those have high "cost at convergence" values. In the companion paper (Elvidge et al., 2023), a full statistical analysis of the method, using over 10,000 COSMIC‐2 measurements, has been made. Radio signals sent between GNSS navigational satellites and receivers in a low orbit around the Earth are delayed, and their paths are bent, by the presence of electrons in the ionosphere. Previous attempts to use these observations to estimate the electron density have been based on the delay of the signals. The new approach outlined in this paper uses the bending incurred by the radio waves instead. Such "bending angles" have been used to infer some properties of the lower atmosphere for many years, and are widely available. How atmospheric pollution is perceived by urban dwellers has long been a topic of interest within geography and the social sciences, whether to draw attention to environmental injustices, to better understand the materialities and affects associated with polluted air, or to grasp how people 'tune in' to polluted matter. In this paper, we draw on three interrelated geographical and social science literatures on polluted air to inform our exploration of how residents of an industrial town in the UK encounter and perceive localised ambient air pollution. Using creative methods, we explore residents' narrative accounts of everyday life in the town, revealing how their engagements with the matter of pollution over time are drawn from multiple registers, giving rise to a plurality of perceptions filled with tensions between near and far, and between past, present and future, producing an ambiguous atmosphere all of its own. The paper contributes to geographic explorations of urban atmospheres an understanding of how they are differently experienced and known, and how residential perceptions might persist or change over different timescales. The cloud feedback may result in amplification or damping of Arctic warming. Two common techniques used to diagnose the top‐of‐the‐atmosphere cloud feedback are the Adjusted Cloud Radiative Effect (AdjCRE) method and the Cloud Radiative Kernel (CRK) method. We apply both to CMIP5 and CMIP6 model data, finding that the AdjCRE calculated Arctic shortwave cloud feedback is twice as correlated with sea ice loss in CMIP5, and four times in CMIP6, as the CRK method. We find that the CRK method produces Arctic all‐sky residual percentages exceeding 20% in 15 of 18 models. We use the CRK method to decompose the feedback in CMIP5 and CMIP6 finding that its median value changed from negative to positive driven by a less‐negative cloud optical depth feedback. Despite its lack of closure, we conclude that the CRK method is better suited for Arctic SW feedbacks as it is less impacted by surface albedo changes. The Arctic is warming faster than the rest of the globe, and one of the largest sources of uncertainty in its climate projections is the cloud feedback. There are two popular methods to calculate the cloud feedback: the Adjusted Cloud Radiative Effect technique, and the Cloud Radiative Kernel technique. In this paper we compare the two methods in a suite of climate models by considering the extent to which changes in Arctic sea ice impact the cloud feedbacks. From this analysis we conclude that the Cloud Radiative Kernel method is less affected by sea ice loss. We then apply the Cloud Radiative Kernel technique to data from the two most recent generations of global climate models to investigate how polar day Arctic cloud feedbacks have changed between these generations. We find that the median value of these Arctic feedbacks is slightly positive in the newest generation of models, a change from slightly negative in the previous generation that is largely fueled by a weakening of the feedback associated with changes in cloud optical depth. Quantifying water vapor and carbon dioxide (CO 2) exchange dynamics between the land and the atmosphere through observations and modeling is necessary in order to reproduce and project near-surface climate in coupled land–atmosphere models. The exchange of water and CO 2 occurs at the leaf surface (leaf level) and in a net manner through exchanges at all the leaf surfaces composing the vegetation canopy and at the soil surface (canopy level). These exchanges depend on the meteorological forcings imposed by the overlying atmosphere (atmospheric boundary layer level). In this paper, we investigate the effect of four canopy environmental variables (photosynthetic active radiation (PAR), water vapor pressure deficit (VPD), air temperature (T), and atmospheric CO 2 concentration (Ca)) on the local individual leaf exchange and canopy exchange of water and CO 2 at hourly timescales. Additionally, we investigate the effect of atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) processes on the local exchange. To that end, we simultaneously investigated the exchanges of water and CO 2 at leaf level and canopy level for an alfalfa field in northern Spain over 1 day in summer 2021. We used comprehensive observations ranging from stomatal conductance to ABL measurements collected during the Land Surface Interactions with the Atmosphere in the Iberian Semi-Arid Environment (LIAISE) experiment. To support the observational analysis, we used a coupled land–atmosphere model (CLASS model) that has representations at all levels considered. To relate how temporal changes of the four environmental variables modify the fluxes of water and CO 2 , we studied tendency equations of the leaf gas exchange. These mathematical expressions quantify the temporal evolution of the leaf gas exchange as a function of the temporal evolution of PAR, VPD, T , and Ca. To investigate the effects of ABL processes on the local exchange, we developed three modeling experiments that impose surface radiative perturbations by a cloud passage (which perturbed PAR, T , and VPD), entrainment of dry air from the free troposphere (which perturbed VPD), and advection of cold air (which perturbed T and VPD). The model results and observations matched the leaf gas exchange (r2 between 0.23 and 0.67) and canopy gas exchange (r2 between 0.90 and 0.95). The tendency equations of the modeled leaf gas exchange during the study day revealed that the temporal dynamics of PAR were the main contributor to the temporal dynamics of the leaf gas exchange, with atmospheric CO 2 temporal dynamics being the least important contributor. From the three modeling experiments with ABL perturbations, the surface radiative changes induced by a cloud perturbed the CO 2 exchange the most, whereas all of them perturbed the water exchange to a similar extent. Second-order effects on the dynamics of the leaf gas exchange were also identified using the tendency equations. For instance, the decrease in the net CO 2 assimilation rate during the cloud passage caused by a decrease in surface radiation was further enhanced due to the decrease in air temperature also associated with the cloud. With this research we showcase that the proposed tendency equations can disentangle the effect of environmental variables on the leaf exchange of water and CO 2 with the atmosphere, as represented in land–surface parameterization schemes. Since the tropopause was first identified, the quality and resolution of weather balloons has dramatically improved. NOAA Earth System Research Laboratories (ESRL) have provided high resolution and very high quality ozonesondes from eight locations: Fiji; American Samoa; Greenland; Antarctica; and several locations in USA (Hawai'i, Colorado, California and Alabama). These locations collectively cover polar regions, mid‐latitudes and tropics. Using this publicly archived data set, we studied the variability of the tropopause for all eight locations for one complete year (2016). Along with the standard estimates of the tropopause provided by NOAA ESRL, we developed four alternative tropopause definitions each based on changes in one of the following: (a) molar density; (b) temperature lapse rates; (c) water vapor content; (d) ozone content. These old and new tropopause definitions appear to hold over all eight locations—for all seasons and from the tropics to the poles. The cohesiveness between all five of these independent tropopause definitions is remarkable, although the NOAA ESRL estimates sometimes identify higher tropopause onsets than the other estimates. Therefore, each tropopause definition could potentially be used as proxies for other tropopause definitions. However, it also confirms that the troposphere/tropopause transition is a multi‐faceted physical and chemical phenomenon associated with more than just temperature changes. Finally, these high‐resolution results suggest that the original term "tropopause" might be a misnomer since they suggest increases in temperature lapse rate variability, rather than the "pausing" implied by lower resolution data or by lapse rates that are averaged over large distances. Since 1902, it has been known that higher up in the atmosphere, in the region near where commercial airplanes fly, temperatures remain relatively constant with height. This region is called "the tropopause." In 1957, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) defined the start of the tropopause in terms of a set of rules, that were complex, but designed to be applicable for all latitudes and seasons. However, these rules are often hard to implement and can give ambiguous results. So, other definitions have been developed for specific regions, such as the tropics, that are more straightforward and easier to interpret. In this paper, we have developed four new tropopause definitions that can be used with modern high resolution "ozonesondes" (weather balloons that also measure ozone). These four independent definitions describe different aspects of the atmosphere but each give very similar estimates of the tropopause. This reveals that the tropopause involves many different but synchronous changes in the atmosphere. It also shows that the name "tropopause" is confusing because it is a part of the atmosphere involving lots of changes instead of "pausing." A multi-season convection-permitting regional climate simulation of the Maritime Continent (MC) using the Met Office Unified Model (MetUM) with 2.2 km grid spacing is presented and evaluated. The simulations pioneer the use of atmosphere–ocean coupling with the multi-column K profile parametrisation (KPP) mixed-layer ocean model in atmospheric convection-permitting climate simulations. Comparisons are made against a convection-parametrised simulation in which it is nested and which in turn derives boundary conditions from the ERA5 reanalysis. This paper describes the configuration, performance of the mean state and variability in the two simulations compared against observational datasets. The models have both minor sea surface temperature (SST) and wet precipitation biases. The diurnal cycle, representation of equatorial waves, and relationship between SST and precipitation are all improved in the convection-permitting model compared to the convection-parametrised model. The Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) is present in both models with a faster-than-observed propagation speed. However, it is unclear whether fidelity of the MJO simulation is inherent to the model or whether it predominantly arises from the forcing at the boundaries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Numerical weather prediction (NWP), when accessible, is a crucial input to short-term solar power forecasting. WRF-Solar, the first NWP model specifically designed for solar energy applications, has shown promising predictive capability. Nevertheless, few attempts have been made to investigate its performance under high aerosol loading, which attenuates incoming radiation significantly. The North China Plain is a polluted region due to industrialization, which constitutes a proper testbed for such investigation. In this paper, aerosol direct radiative effect (DRE) on three surface shortwave radiation components (i.e., global, beam, and diffuse) during five heavy pollution episodes is studied within the WRF-Solar framework. Results show that WRF-Solar overestimates instantaneous beam radiation up to 795.3 W m−2 when the aerosol DRE is not considered. Although such overestimation can be partially offset by an underestimation of the diffuse radiation of about 194.5 W m−2, the overestimation of the global radiation still reaches 160.2 W m−2. This undesirable bias can be reduced when WRF-Solar is powered by Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) aerosol forecasts, which then translates to accuracy improvements in photovoltaic (PV) power forecasts. This work also compares the forecast performance of the CAMS-powered WRF-Solar with that of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts model. Under high aerosol loading conditions, the irradiance forecast accuracy generated by WRF-Solar increased by 53.2% and the PV power forecast accuracy increased by 6.8%. Significance Statement: Numerical weather prediction (NWP) is the "go-to" approach for achieving high-performance day-ahead solar power forecasting. Integrating time-varying aerosol forecasts into NWP models effectively captures aerosol direct radiation effects, thereby enhancing the accuracy of solar irradiance forecasts in heavily polluted regions. This work not only quantifies the aerosol effects on global, beam, and diffuse irradiance but also reveals the physical mechanisms of irradiance-to-power conversion by constructing a model chain. Using the North China Plain as a testbed, the performance of WRF-Solar on solar power forecasting on five severe pollution days is analyzed. The pyrolysis separation of calcium and magnesium from phosphate tailings is an important process due to its high-value resource utilization. In this paper, aiming to address the problems of high energy consumption, a slow decomposition rate and the low activity of decomposition products in the high-temperature pyrolysis of phosphate tailings, the medium-temperature pyrolysis of phosphate tailings under a H2O atmosphere was carried out, and the phase reconstruction and activation of pyrolysis process were discussed. The results showed that compared with N2, air and CO2 atmospheres, the pyrolysis process of phosphate tailings in a H2O atmosphere was changed from two stages to one stage, the starting decomposition temperature was reduced to 500 °C and the decomposition time was shortened to 30 min. The order of the influence of each factor on the pyrolysis of phosphate tailings was temperature > H2O pressure > holding time. Under the optimized pyrolysis conditions, the yield of CaMg(CO3)2 decomposition of phosphate tailings into MgO and CaO was 97.3% and 98.1%, respectively, and the reactivity of MgO was 31.6%. The distribution of Ca and Mg elements in the phosphate tailings after pyrolysis showed a negative correlation, and both of them no longer formed associated compounds; Ca mainly existed in the form of Ca(OH)2, Ca5(PO4)3F, CaSiO3 and CaF2, and Mg mainly existed in the form of MgO, MgF2 and Mg(OH)2. The freshwater discharge from melting ice sheets in the deglaciation or glaciation is prone to anomalies in ocean-atmosphere transport between different latitudes, which can lead to a series of abrupt millennial-scale climate events, either obvious or not, such as the Younger Dryas (YD) events and YD-like events. Marine Isotope Stage 11c (MIS 11c) serves as one of the best references for the current Holocene, and the studies of possible YD-like events and their triggering mechanisms during Holocene are conducive to the understanding of the occurrence pattern of extreme climate events. In this paper, the results of the study on the J33 δ18O sequence records of stalagmites in Jinfo Cave, Chongqing, are shown: (1) Stalagmites in the Asian monsoon climate zone reveal a millennial-scale weak monsoon event that occurred around 410 ka BP prior to the Glacial Maximum of MIS 11 interglacial period. (2) Both the 410 ka weak monsoon event and the YD event occurred during the gradual strengthening of the monsoon and ascending branch of summer insolation in the Northern Hemisphere prior to the Glacial Maximum of interglacial period. This was also a time when Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) disturbance occurred. The duration, internal structure, and pattern of the events were similar, with differences in the change magnitude and ice volume conditions. (3) The weak monsoon event that occurred in 410 ka BP was primarily influenced by the combined effects of insolation and AMOC. This event was characterized by a sustained warming process that accelerated the melting of the Greenland ice sheet, leading to the destabilization of this ice sheet. The continuous flowing of freshwater into the North Atlantic resulted in a short-lived AMOC oscillation. The weakening of the AMOC resulted in a cold anomaly over the North Atlantic. As a result of atmospheric telecorrelation, the weaker AMOC led to a weaker Asian Summer Monsoon (ASM). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the possible sources of carbon dioxide emission into the atmosphere can be river ecosystems. The paper presents the results of measuring CO2 fluxes from the surface of several rivers and lakes in Tomsk Region. In the experimental period, average carbon dioxide fluxes were 143.7 ± 21.7 (August 13–14, 2023), 53.3 ± 21.2 (August 19), and 80.4 ± 59.9 mgC m−2 h−1 for the Ob River; 66.1 ± 17.3 mgC m−2 h−1 for the Ket River; 33.3 ± 17.3 mgC m−2 h−1 for the swamp Karasevoye Lake, 50.2 ± 23.0 mgC m−2 h−1 for the Suiga River, and 81.9 ± 11.5 mgC m−2 h−1 for the Iksa River. The term "hotspot" refers to the sharp increase in the reflectance occurring when incident (solar) and reflected (viewing) directions almost coincide in the backscatter direction. The accurate simulation of hotspot directional signatures is important for many remote sensing applications. The RossThick–LiSparse–Reciprocal (RTLSR) bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) model is widely used in radiative transfer simulations, and the hotspot model mostly used is from Maignan–Bréon, but it typically requires large values of numerical quadrature and Fourier expansion terms in order to represent the hotspot accurately for its use coupled with atmospheric radiative transfer modeling (RTM). In this paper, we have developed a modified version based on the Maignan–Bréon's hotspot BRDF model that converges much faster numerically, making it more practical for use in the RTMs that require Fourier expansion of BRDF to simulate the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) hotspot signatures, such as in the RTM models using the Doubling–Adding or discrete ordinate method. Using the vector linearized discrete ordinate radiative transfer model (VLIDORT), we found that reasonable TOA–hotspot accuracy can be obtained with just 23 Fourier terms for clear atmosphere and 63 Fourier terms for atmosphere with aerosol scattering. In order to study the impact of molecular and aerosol scattering on hotspot signatures, we carried out a number of hotspot signature simulations with VLIDORT. We confirmed that (1) atmospheric molecule scattering and the existence of aerosol tend to smooth out the hotspot signature at the TOA and that (2) the hotspot signature at the TOA in the near-infrared is larger than in the visible, and its impact by surface reflectance is more significant. As the hotspot amplitude at the TOA with aerosol scattering included is smaller than that with molecular scattering only, the amplitude of hotspot signature at the surface is likely underestimated in the previous analysis based on the POLDER measurements, where the atmospheric correction was based on a single-scatter Rayleigh-only calculation. This modified model can calculate the amplitude of the hotspot accurately, and, as it agrees very well with the original RossThick model away from the hotspot region, this model can be simply used in conditions with and without hotspots. However, there are some differences in this modified model compared to the original Maignan–Bréon model for the scattering angles close to the hotspot point; thus, it may not be appropriate for those who need an exact representation of the hotspot angular signature. The development of any atmosphere or ocean model warrants a suite of test cases (TCs) to verify its spatial and temporal discretizations, order of accuracy, stability, reproducibility, portability, scalability, etc. In this paper, we present a suite of shallow water TCs designed to verify the barotropic solver of atmosphere and ocean models. These include the non‐dispersive coastal Kelvin wave; the dispersive inertia‐gravity wave; the dispersive planetary and topographic Rossby waves; the barotropic tide; and a non‐linear manufactured solution. These TCs check the implementation of the linear pressure gradient term; the linear constant or variable‐coefficient Coriolis and bathymetry terms; and the non‐linear advection terms. Simulation results are presented for a variety of time‐stepping methods as well as two spatial discretizations: a mimetic finite volume method based on the TRiSK scheme, and a high‐order discontinuous Galerkin spectral element method. The experimental procedure for conducting these numerical experiments is detailed. It underscores several key considerations that vary depending on the chosen spatial discretization method. Finally, convergence studies of every TC are conducted with refinement in both space and time, only in space, and only in time. The convergence slopes match the expected theoretical predictions. Plain Language Summary: Before running an atmosphere, ocean, or a coupled climate simulation, every model developer should ensure the correct implementation of each term in the governing equations that drive the models forward in time. This motivates the development of idealized test cases (TCs), each of which verifies a subset of terms in the governing equations with different initial and boundary conditions. Here we present a suite of six TCs for the momentum equation and sea surface height equation for ocean models in a single‐layer configuration. The computed results from the ocean model can be compared to exact solutions. The computed solution always has a small error, but is said to converge to the exact solution with reduction in grid cell size and time step. If the model converges at the expected rate, then we know that it is solving the governing equations correctly. We show results of convergence tests from two models, and share the full specifications of these TCs so that other ocean modelers may reproduce them. On 14 August 2021, an earthquake of moment magnitude Mw = 7.2 hit Haiti Island. Unfortunately, it caused several victims and economic damage to the island. While predicting earthquakes is still challenging and has not yet been achieved, studying the preparation phase of such catastrophic events may improve our knowledge and pose the basis for future predictions of earthquakes. In this paper, the six months that preceded the Haiti earthquake are analysed, investigating the lithosphere (by seismic catalogue), atmosphere (by climatological archive) and ionosphere by China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES-01) and Swarm satellites, as well as Total Electron Content (TEC) data. Several anomalies have been extracted from the analysed parameters using different techniques. A comparison, especially between the different layers, could increase or decrease the probability that a specific group of anomalies may be (or not) related to the preparation phase of the Haiti 2021 earthquake. In particular, two possible coupling processes have been revealed as part of the earthquake preparation phase. The first one was only between the lithosphere and the atmosphere about 130 days before the mainshock. The second one was about two months before the seismic event. It is exciting to underline that all the geo-layers show anomalies at that time: seismic accumulation of stress showed an increase of its slope, several atmospheric quantities underline abnormal atmospheric conditions, and CSES-01 Ne depicted two consecutive days of ionospheric electron density. This suggested a possible coupling of lithosphere–atmosphere and ionosphere as a sign of the increased stress, i.e., the impending earthquake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to improve performance across a wide range of Earth system prediction tasks. As with any application of AI, it is important for AI to be developed in an ethical and responsible manner to minimize bias and other effects. In this work, we extend our previous work demonstrating how AI can go wrong with weather and climate applications by presenting a categorization of bias for AI in the Earth sciences. This categorization can assist AI developers to identify potential biases that can affect their model throughout the AI development life cycle. We highlight examples from a variety of Earth system prediction tasks of each category of bias. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: As artificial intelligence (AI) grows in popularity, its methods are being applied to a wide range of Earth system prediction tasks. Although AI can facilitate more accurate prediction at many tasks, it is not without potential pitfalls, especially if the developers are not as familiar with its potential drawbacks. In this paper, we provide a classification system for the types of bias that one is likely to see in applying AI to Earth sciences. Understanding the factors that control carbonate systems is an important goal due to the complex interactions between the hydrophysical and chemical–biological conditions in coastal basins. The results of this paper present the state of the carbonate system in Penzhina Bay and its adjacent waters—the Shelikhov Gulf—in July 2023, during spring tides with 13 m height. The area we studied included the length of the largest river in the region, the Penzhina River, from the peak of its summer flood to its boundary with the Shelikhov Gulf (the Sea of Okhotsk). This unique dynamic basin, with a length of about 800 km, was studied over 17 days. During this period, the entire water column of Penzhina Bay, down to a depth of about 60 m, and the surface water layer of the Shelikhov Gulf were undersaturated in terms of CO2, with low levels relative to those of the atmosphere. To explain this observation, the dissolved oxygen, nutrients in mineral and organic forms, humic substances, chlorophyll a, and photic zone thickness are presented for the entire basin under study, together with its hydrological data. The results of daily observations of the carbonate system at fixed anchorage stations characterize two contrasting regions of Penzhina Bay: one that was more exposed to continental runoff, which had salinity levels in the range of 8.0–21.3 psu during one tidal cycle; the second had smaller variations in salinity in the range of 31.6–32.9 psu during one tidal cycle. This study emphasizes the importance of biological processes and continental runoff on the variability of the carbonate system parameters and CO2 fluxes at a water/atmosphere boundary with extreme tidal conditions in this ecosystem that is barely affected by human activities. More than three dozen submillisecond events of ELVES type ("elves"), which are the result of the interaction of the front of an electromagnetic pulse from a lightning discharge and the lower layer of the ionosphere, have been identified in the data of a UV Atmosphere orbital multichannel detector (Mini-EUSO). Each event has a characteristic annular glow pattern and occupies a significant part of the detector's field of view, and the signal in a separate channel has an asymmetric profile with a pronounced peak. The distribution of peak times contains information about both the localization of the discharge and the altitude of the glow. In this paper, we propose a Bayesian (probabilistic) model for reconstructing ELVES events, implemented using probabilistic programming methods in PyMC-5. The capabilities of the model for determining the position of the discharge are shown using the example of several events. Context. Observations of meteors in the Earth's atmosphere offer a unique tool for determining the flux of meteoroids that are too small to be detected by direct telescopic observations. Although these objects are routinely observed from ground-based facilities, such as meteor and fireball networks, space-based instruments come with notable advantages and have the potential to achieve a broad and uniform exposure. Aims. In this paper, we describe the first observations of meteor events with Mini-EUSO, a very wide field-of-view telescope launched in August 2019 from the Baikonur cosmodrome and installed on board the Russian Zvezda module of the International Space Station. Mini-EUSO can map the night-time Earth in the near-UV range (290-130 nm) with a field of view equal to 44° × 44° and a spatial resolution of about 4.7 km at an altitude of 100 km from the ground. The detector saves triggered transient phenomena with a sampling frequency of 2.5 µs and 320 µs, as well as a continuous acquisition at 40.96 ms scale that is suitable for meteor observations. Methods. We designed two dedicated and complementary trigger methods, together with an analysis pipeline able to estimate the main physical parameters of the observed population of meteors, such as the duration, horizontal speed, azimuth, and absolute magnitude. To compute the absolute flux of meteors from Mini-EUSO observations, we implemented a simulation framework able to estimate the detection efficiency as a function of the meteor magnitude and the background illumination conditions. Results. The instrument detected 24 thousand meteors within the first 40 data-taking sessions from November 2019 to August 2021, for a total observation time of approximately 6 days with a limiting absolute magnitude of +6. Our estimation of the absolute flux density of meteoroids in the range of mass between 10−5 kg to 10−1 kg was found to be comparable to other results available in the literature. Conclusions. The results of this work prove the potential for space-based observations to increase the statistics of meteor observations achievable with instruments operating on the ground. The slope of the mass distribution of meteoroids sampled with Mini-EUSO suggests a mass index of either s = 2.09 ± 0.02 or s = 2.31 ± 0.03, according to two different methodologies for the computation of the pre-atmospheric mass starting from the luminosity of each event. The maximum information entropy production model (MaxEnt), the relative humidity at equilibrium approach (ETRHEQ), and the Surface Flux Equilibrium model (SFE) are three recently developed models to estimate evapotranspiration. Although the connection between ETRHEQ and SFE is evident, no attempts have been made to investigate the congruence, distinctions, or potential complementarity between the two models and MaxEnt. Our mathematical analysis demonstrates that minimizing the vertical variance of RH in ETRHEQ is equivalent to minimizing the dissipation function of energy fluxes in MaxEnt, under the assumption of the same eddy diffusivity of heat and water vapor and with a specific expression for the ratio between the thermal inertia terms for H and LE. The connection between ETRHEQ, SFE, and MaxEnt is independent of Monin‐Obukhov similarity theory (MOST)'s extremum solution, and MOST's extreme solution can be viewed as equivalent to introducing a constant correction factor to account for atmospheric stability. While ETRHEQ and MaxEnt can be united within a single hydrometeorological framework, they diverge in their approaches to modeling evapotranspiration, particularly in how they address the roles of vegetation and land surface heterogeneity. More importantly, the unified framework suggests that turbulence fluxes within the atmospheric boundary layer adhere to the principles of maximum information entropy production. The way in which dissipation, along with its associated entropy production, is established using information entropy theory deviates from traditional thermodynamic entropy formulations. Exploring the connection between thermodynamic and information entropy and developing proper formulations of dissipation for energy fluxes presents an appealing avenue for prospective research. We present broadband ionospheric scintillation observations of highly defined symmetric quasi‐periodic scintillations (QPS: Maruyama, 1991, https://doi.org/10.1029/91rs00357) caused by plasma structures in the mid‐latitude ionosphere using the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR: van Haarlem et al., 2013, https://doi.org/10.1051/0004‐6361/201220873). Two case studies are shown, one from 15 December 2016, and one from 30 January 2018, in which well‐defined main signal fades are observed to be bounded by secondary diffraction fringing. The ionospheric plasma structures effectively behave as a Fresnel obstacle, in which steep plasma gradients at the periphery result in a series of decreasing intensity interference fringes, while the center of the structures largely block the incoming radio signal altogether. In particular, the broadband observing capabilities of LOFAR permit us to see considerable frequency dependent behavior in the QPSs which, to our knowledge, is a new result. We extract some of the clearest examples of scintillation arcs reported in an ionospheric context, from delay‐Doppler spectral analysis of these two events. These arcs permit the extraction of propagation velocities for the plasma structures causing the QPSs ranging from 50 to 00 m s−1, depending on the assumed altitude. The spacing between the individual plasma structures ranges between 5 and 20 km. The periodicities of the main signal fades in each event and, in the case of the 2018 data, co‐temporal ionosonde data, suggest the propagation of the plasma structures causing the QPSs are in the E‐region. Each of the two events is accurately reproduced using a thin screen phase model. Individual signal fades and enhancements were modeled using small variations in total electron content (TEC) amplitudes of order 1 mTECu, demonstrating the sensitivity of LOFAR to very small fluctuations in ionospheric plasma density. To our knowledge these results are among the most detailed observations and modeling of QPSs in the literature. Plain Language Summary: Quasi‐periodic scintillations (QPS) are repeated variations in radio signals received on the ground from radio sources beyond the Earth's atmosphere. As these signals pass through plasma structures in the ionosphere they undergo refractive lensing which is seen at the receiver as a distinct signal fade, bounded on both sides by diffraction fringing. Analysis of these QPS using 2D Fourier transforms produced very clear examples of "scintillation arcs" which were used to extract the velocity of the ionospheric plasma producing these patterns. These symmetric quasi‐periodic oscillations form a distinct category of radio signals which were reproduced in this study using a phase screen model with very small changes in amplitude, corresponding to variations in ionospheric plasma density along the raypath of <<1% of ionospheric plasma density along the raypath. These features are seen across the wide bandwidth from 24 to 64 MHz, with frequency dependent variation in the width of the signal fade and fringing all being visible. Consequently we see how even these very small changes in ionospheric plasma density are nonetheless able to produce quite distinct variations in received signal strength. The observations in this paper thus demonstrate some of the fundamental physical processes of radio scattering in the ionosphere. Posthumanist orientations have underlined the need to foster non-hierarchical relations with other-than-human beings to adequately attend to planetary crises and help life to survive and flourish. Since a posthumanist critique towards natural sciences has mostly leaned on questioning the premise of human subjects making sense of objectified nature, little effort has been made to explore if and how scientific research and posthumanist approaches might intersect and co-exist without abandoning their respective aims. In this paper, we analyse a case of ecological citizen science inquiry on urban rats to explore theoretical and practical opportunities for environmental education that arise from bridging the posthumanist call for attentiveness towards multispecies worlds with ecological research endeavor. We reconceptualize ecological inquiry as sharing atmospheres with other animals as well as through its material aspects to articulate conceptual tools to disrupt the subject-object division of knowledge creation between humans and other animals. Soil moisture is an essential climate variable of the Earth system. Understanding its spatiotemporal dynamics is essential for predicting weather patterns and climate variability, monitoring and mitigating the effects and occurrence of droughts and floods, improving irrigation in agricultural areas, and sustainably managing water resources. Here we review in depth how soils can remember information on soil moisture anomalies over time, as embedded in the concept of soil moisture memory (SMM). We explain the mechanisms underlying SMM and explore its external and internal drivers; we also discuss the impacts of SMM on different land surface processes, focusing on soil‐plant‐atmosphere coupling. We explore the spatiotemporal variability, seasonality, locality, and depth‐dependence of SMM and provide insights into both improving its characterization in land surface models and using satellite observations to quantify it. Finally, we offer guidance for further research on SMM. Soil moisture memory can be affected by a variety of factors, both external (e.g., weather extremes) and internal (soil's unique properties). It affects everything from the air to the way our landscapes respond to disasters like droughts, wildfires, and floods. We also studied how this phenomenon affects the balance of water and energy in our environment, the health of our plants, and even how it communicates with the atmosphere. We show how it can change depending on where you are on the planet, the time of year, and how deep you dig into the soil. We offer scientists insights into how weather and land surface models can become more accurate by accounting for soil moisture memory. Its understanding not only helps us predict and manage our environment, but also provides opportunities for exciting scientific discoveries. Taking inspiration from ethnographic methods, this study presents the experiences of young children and their families, as they interact with a display at the Workers Museum in Copenhagen, Denmark, analysing these through Ben Anderson's concept affective atmospheres. Adding to scholarship on emotion in leisure studies, the paper presents young visitor experiences as ongoing relational interactions between bodies, objects, and places, where atmospheres are central to the sensory leisure experience and deeply enmeshed with affectivity. With this perspective, we contribute to broadening the scholarship that challenges the division between positive and negative emotions, which continues to be foregrounded in leisure scholarship, arguing that such binary framework does not account for the granularity and complexity of emotional worlds. The research invites scholars and practitioners to attend to affective atmospheres in visitor experiences, while letting go of the notion that these can be controlled through careful curation.
