A new Centaurea species, C. mengenensis Uysal & Şirin, is described and illustrated from Mengen district, Anatolia, based on morphological and molecular data. To identify its taxonomical position within Centaurea, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) = gene region of the new species was amplified and sequenced. The new species belongs in Centaurea subg. Centaurea as shown by both morphological and molecular data. Its diagnostic characters are presented, including an updated key to related species distributed in Turkey. Additionally, the geographic distribution of the new species, as well as of its relatives, is mapped. The chromosome number of C. mengenensis is 2n = 2x = 18 and its achene surface ornamentation is irregularly sulcate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The identification of species based on anatomical characters is valuable to investigate their taxonomic status, phylogeny and understand their autoecology. The current study analysed the stem and leaf properties of 20 species of the subgenus Cyanus (Mill.) Hayek in Turkey. The Cyanus species exhibited xeromorphic anatomical features, such as tight palisade parenchyma and induced spongy parenchyma, which indicated adaptations to the arid soil and a forest ecosystem in which they occurred, as well as to high light intensity and precipitation. Anatomical features such as the midrib shape and number of vascularization patterns differed among the species. Similar anatomical characters were analysed for the investigated species. Aethionema aytachii Ertuğrul & Hamzaoğlu, a new species from central Anatolia that grows on marly hills in the Ayaş district of Ankara Province (Turkey), is described and its relationships and distinguishing characters from the closest relative A. dumanii are discussed. The shape of pollen grains of A. aytachii is tricolpate, and its seed-coat sculpture is verrucate. Palynological characters of 20 taxa belonging to the Turkish subgenus Cyanus were studied in details using light and scanning electron microscopy. Pollen grains of the subgenus Cyanus were tricolporate or syncolporate, subprolate or prolate-spheroidal, 26.15 to 53 μm in polar size, 22.84 to 46.86 μm in equatorial size, isopolar, and radially symmetrical. The only type of pollen grain ornamentation observed was scabrate-perforate. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis were performed to investigate the relationships of the studied Cyanus taxa. As a result of the phenetic analyses, the polar axis, equatorial axis, colpus length, and apocolpium were found to be significant palynomorphological characteristics for taxonomic use. The aim of this study was to document the taxonomical, morphological, anatomical, palynological and cytological characters, and geographical distribution of endemic Aubrieta pinardii Boiss. (Brassicaceae) from Turkey. The description of the taxon was revised as a consequence of comprehensive assessments of many specimens. The surface pictures belonging to seed and pollen of the taxon were obtained by Scanning Electron Microscope. The seed surface ornamentation was rugose. The pollen was radially and isopolar and prolate in forms, with polar axes of 19.52 ± 0.29 µm and equatorial axes of 13.04 ± 0.22 µm, with oval outlines in the equatorial axes, and elliptical in the polar axes. They were three-colpate and colpus sizes varied between 12.98 µm and 13.29 µm in length, and between 1.33 and 2.09 µm in width. Also, the anatomical structures of the root, stem and leaf of species were studied. In cytological studies, the chromosome number of species was found as 2n = 16 (x =8). Centaurea uysalii Şirin & Çeçen, a new Asteraceae species from the province of Karaman, in Turkey, is described and illustrated herein. It is morphologically similar to C. bourgaei Boiss. (Subgen. Cyanus), but it mainly differs from its relative in terms of the involucre and achene lengths. The achene micromorphological features and karyomorphology of C. uysalii and C. bourgaei were examined in this study. In this study, the karyomorphology of 20 Turkish Centaurea (subgenus Cyanus) taxa was examined. The number of chromosomes of 11 taxa belonging to the subgenus Cyanus was determined for the first time. As a result of the karyomorphological studies, the number of basic chromosomes was determined to be x = 8, 10, and 12 in annuals and x = 10 and 11 in perennials. The populations are tetraploid in the seven perennial taxa and polyploidy is not rare for this group. On the other hand, all annual taxa are diploid. Considering the asymmetry indices, we can conclude that most taxa have symmetrical karyotypes. The most common karyotype formulas are 40 metacentric chromosomes (m), 20m, and 16m + 4 submetacentric chromosomes, respectively. A satellite was detected in the majority of the taxa, but it was observed to be mainly localized on the short arm of the chromosome. Satellites are located mainly on the second chromosome.
