Emerging from a participatory research project, this article draws on in-depth, semi-structured interviews, and home tours with trans masculine individuals and couples in the US Northeast to examine how homes come to function as spaces of both grounding and disidentification for transmasculine participants. In this article we argue that photographs and items of décor-particular, meaningful objects in trans homes-function to materialize the queerness of transition, and thus constitute a material expression of queer time. They provide a means for trans folks to acknowledge the queerness of the multiple life course temporalities co-present in the intimacy of private space, and we suggest that through these objects trans bodies engage in a process of becoming through moments of ‘co-substancing’ with the objects that are cherished, displayed, or hidden, in trans homespaces. In this article we suggest that objects on display in the home allow not just for a stretching of normative temporalities of the self, but also for the performance of home space as trans. We argue that more scholarly attention needs to be paid to the everyday, mundane geographies of transgender lives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Focusing on a case study of a non-state actor called The Homecoming Revolution, which included interviews with staff as well as an analysis of reports, position papers, and testimonials on their website, I argue that attempts to incite return migration of skilled overseas South Africans, as an attempt to provide a fix for failures of the neoliberalising South African economy, hinge on a particular ideology of the body. I suggest that a constant focus on the supposed multiplier effects of the physical presence of skilled migrant bodies that have returned to South Africa, as well as the deployment of emotion as a means of mobilising expatriate bodies, constitutes an attempt to instrumentalise the transactionality of these bodies. This paper argues that more attention needs to be paid to the ways in which bodies are imagined and mobilised in neoliberalising states' engagements with their diasporas. In this article we argue that Justice Kennedy, Citizens United's critics, and the modern pro-gun movement all share the same homesickness: a longing for the lost promises of the Framers' First Amendment. This ache was anticipated by refugee political philosopher Hannah Arendt, who longed not for her native Germany but for a post-revolutionary America in which true political freedom (for some) was successfully established by the Framers. The pro-gun movement's answer to this homesickness has been a Second Amendment "homecoming," seeking freedom in the personal right to bear arms. However, the outcome of Defense Distributed v. U.S. Department of State, a recent case about 3D printable gun codes, illustrates why the gun rights answer is misguided as it entangles the two amendments. Drawing on Arendt's notion of freedom, as opposed to liberty, this paper argues that a proper response to the current crisis in the jurisprudence of the First and Second Amendments should entail the understanding that: (I) "freedom of speech" should only protect speech-acts that concern public interest; and (II) "the security of a free State" requires adequate access to the infrastructures that make speech possible through an equitable distribution of power. As this paper concludes, by developing atomic weapons, the government has "constructively taken" the people's "right to keep and bear Arms," and guns are simply not a plausible remedy. Accordingly, this paper suggests a model for how the government may provide a "just compensation" for this "taking" as required by the Fifth Amendment's "taking clause." The model demands that equal to a portion of the defense budget should be diverted annually to publicly fund 501(c) non-profit organizations, modern-day "well-regulated Militias" that distribute freedom across society. Throughout the history of South Africa, but especially since the end of apartheid, white South Africans have left, and returned to, the country in significant numbers. Because of political arrangements, ancestral privileges and perceived cultural affinities, the plurality migrate to the UK. Drawing on new materialist approaches to race, in this article I emphasize the links between past and present histories of migration between the UK and South Africa in order to explore the construction of an embodied transnational whiteness. Because they have recent ancestors who emigrated from Britain, or other countries now in the EU, during the colonial, segregationist and apartheid periods, many white South Africans have the automatic right to visas to live and work in the UK, and hundreds of thousands have left -- and returned -- since 1994. Drawing on a series of indepth interviews with white South African return migrants in Durban, largest city in the province formerly known as Natal -- commonly called the 'last outpost of the British Empire' -- I argue that, through what I call the 'visa whiteness machine', whiteness as a racial formation -- neither a natural fact nor simply a discourse -- emerges not discursively but materially as certain bodies with European ancestry and phenotype come to stick together through their motility -- their immanent ability to move in particular circuits through transnational space. In the uneasily globalizing post-apartheid moment, pre-histories of colonial movement thus hang spectrally -- and materially -- over the present, as spatialized/racialized identities are contested, reconstructed and reinscribed through emigration and return.
