BACKGROUND: Although some research has been done in the Mexican manufacturing industry regarding mental workload, none has explored its association with physical fatigue, body weight gain, and human error simultaneously. OBJECTIVE: This research examines the association between mental workload and physical fatigue, body weight gain, and human error in employees from the Mexican manufacturing systems through a mediation analysis approach. METHODS: A survey named Mental Workload Questionnaire was developed by merging the NASA-TLX with a questionnaire containing the mental workload variables mentioned above. The Mental Workload Questionnaire was applied to 167 participants in 63 manufacturing companies. In addition, the mental workload was used as an independent variable, while physical fatigue and body weight gain were mediator variables, and human error was a dependent variable. Six hypotheses were used to measure the relationships among variables and tested using the ordinary least squares regression algorithm. RESULTS: Findings indicated that mental workload significantly correlates with physical fatigue and human error. Also, the mental workload had a significant total association with human error. The highest direct association with body weight gain was provided by physical fatigue, and body weight gain had an insignificant direct association with human error. Finally, all indirect associations were insignificant. CONCLUSION: Mental workload directly affects human error, which physical fatigue does not; however, it does affect body weight gain. Remanufacturing is a production practice that requires the work of producers, consumers, and the government. There are benefits associated with this production model, such as improving the environment, opportunities for cost savings, and others. However, it is essential to identify the factors that affect the possibility of acceptance of this production model. This research proposes a model based on different analysis methodologies and techniques of SEM (Structural Equations Modeling) and the method of PLS (Partial Least Squares). A total of 403 responses to the survey were collected from 1 November 2021 to 15 January 2022. For the data treatment, SPSS, Excel, and WarpPLS software were used to identify the variables, factors, and their direct and indirect effects among the latent variables, referring to a scheme focused on consumer perception based on the acquisition remanufactured products. This created model served as a reference to create and develop a design and repair strategy for White goods or similar products in handling, logistics, and repair. This design strategy was transformed into a business model based on a circular economy, particularly on a Product–Service System with social, economic, and environmental benefits for producers and consumers. Managers implement several Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) practices to improve sustainability and economic performance, such as environmental management systems (EMS), eco-design (ED), source reduction (SR) and attending to external environmental management (EEM) requirements; however, the relationship among them requires a deep study. This paper reports the case of the Mexican maquiladora industry, analyzing the main relationships among GSCM practices with environmental impact (EI) and environmental cost savings (ECS). The analysis reports three structural equation models (SEM) developed as simple, second-order, and mediating models. Those relationships are tested using 160 responses to a survey applied to the Mexican maquiladora industry and with partial least squares algorithms (PLS), where conditional probabilities for different scenarios in latent variables are also reported. Findings indicate that EMS has a direct effect on EI (β = 0.442) and ECS (β = 0.227), indicating that EMS reduces EI and cost associated with the production process; however, ED has no direct effect on EI (β = 0.019) and ECS ((β = 0.006), and it can be due to the maquiladora nature as foreign companies focused on manufacturing and not to product design. Machine workshops generate high scrap rates, causing non-compliance with timely delivery and high production costs. Due to their natural characteristics of a low volume, high-mix production batches, and serial and parallel configurations, generally the causes of their failure are not well documented. Thus, to reduce the scrap rate, and evaluate and improve their reliability, their system characteristics must be considered. Based on them, our proposed methodology allows us to evaluate the system, subsystem, and component–subsystem relationship by using either the Weibull and/or the exponential distribution. The strategy to improve the system performance includes reliability tools, expert interviews, cluster analysis, and root-cause analysis. In the application case, the failure sources were found to be mechanical and human errors. The component maintenance/setup, institutional conditions/attitude, and subsystem process/operation were the machine factors that presented the lowest reliability indices. The improved activities were monitored based on the Weibull β and η parameters that affect the system reliability. Finally, by using a life–effort analysis, and the method of comparative analysis of two sequential periods, we identified the causes that generated a change in the Weibull parameters. Featured Application: The present case study reports the 8D technique applied to a real manufacturing production process. Future applications can be adapted to other manufacturing industries by integrating the most important variables in their own contexts. Customer satisfaction is a key element for survival and competitiveness in industrial companies. This paper describes a case study in a manufacturing company that deals with several customer complaints due to defective custom cable assemblies that are integrated in an engine. The goal of this research is to find a solution to this problem, as well as prevent its recurrence by implementing the eight disciplines (8Ds) method in order to: (1) develop a team, (2) describe the problem, (3) develop an interim containment action, (4) determine and verify root causes, (5) develop permanent corrective actions, (6) define and implement corrective actions, (7) prevent recurrences, and (8) recognize and congratulate teamwork as well as individual contributions. Therefore, a software tool is proposed to conduct a functional test on assembly lines. After the test, the problem was successfully reduced and detected, because from 67 engines that were identified with problems, 51 were redesigned before being sent to customers, consequently decreasing the number of defective products by 75%, whereas the remaining 16 engines were replaced by new engines. In conclusion, the research goal was accomplished, and the 8Ds method proved to be a helpful model with which to increase employees' motivation and involvement during the problem-solving process. Featured Application: The application of stochastic and optimization tools through simulation and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) is useful defining the optimal distribution cost in a logistic process. The present work aims at the comprehensive application of stochastic and optimization tools with the support of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) through a case study in a logistics process for electronic goods; simulation and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) are applied for this purpose. The problem to be evaluated is to define an optimal distribution cost for products shipped to wholesale customers located in different cities in Mexico from a manufacturing plant in Tijuana, Mexico. The factors under study are the product allocation for each distribution center, finished good inventory level and on time deliveries, which are supposed to be significant to get the objective. The methodology applied for this problem considers the design of a discrete event simulation model to represent virtually the real life of logistics process, which is considered a complex system due to different activities are interrelated to carry it out. This model is used to execute the different experiments proposed by the RSM. The results obtained from simulation model were analyzed with the RSM to define the mathematical model that allows identifying the parameters of the factors in order to optimize the process. Featured Application: The tool of PDCA cycle, supported by other graphical tools, such as Pareto charts and flowchart, can be applied in the manufacturing industry to delete or reduce occurrence of defects. Defects are considered as one of the wastes in manufacturing systems that negatively affect the delivery times, cost and quality of products leading to manufacturing companies facing a critical situation with the customers and to not comply with the IPC-A-610E standard for the acceptability of electronic components. This is the case is a manufacturing company located in Tijuana, Mexico. Due to an increasing demand on the products manufactured by this company, several defects have been detected in the welding process of electronic boards, as well as in the components named Thru-Holes. It is for this reason that this paper presents a lean manufacturing application case study. The objective of this research is to reduce at least 20% the defects that are generated during the welding process. In addition, it is intended to increase 20% the capacity of three double production lines where electronic boards are processed. As method, the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle, is applied. The Pareto charts and the flowchart are used as support tools. As results, defects decreased 65%, 79%, and 77% in three analyzed product models. As conclusion, the PDCA cycle, the Pareto charts, and the flowchart are excellent quality tools that help to decrease the number of defective components. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID-19 pandemic and the quarantine period determined that university students (human resource) in Mexico had adopted the online class modality, which required them to adapt themselves to new technologies and environmental conditions that are different from classrooms at their university. Specifically, these new environmental conditions can be uncomfortable and have an impact on the students' academic performance. Consequently, the present study aims to determine the impact that the lighting, noise, and temperature levels (independent variables) have on academic performance (dependent variable) in university students during the COVID-19 pandemic. To do this, a questionnaire was developed, which was applied to 206 university students online, and a structural equation model was built that integrates the four variables through three hypotheses, which were statistically validated through the partial least squares method. Results showed that temperature, lighting, and noise have significant direct effects on university students' academic performance. Poor workstation designs represent a risk factor for operators in assembly production lines. Anthropometric design of workstations facilitates the sustainable development of the workplace. This paper proposes a novel integrated approach about work standardization and anthropometric workstation design as a strategy to increase human factor performance as well as the productivity index in manufacturing companies. The integrating approach is presented through a case study in a publishing press company with operators who perform manual and mechanical tasks in production lines in the box assembly department. Currently, the company's production capacity is below demand, and in order to satisfy customers' requirements, the company pays a lot of overtime to operators. In order to solve this problem, the integrated approach was applied. The findings indicated that inefficient movements and body postures in operators decreased from 230 to 78, and the standard time was reduced from 244 to 199 s for each assembled box. In addition, the production rate increased by 229 units per assembly line per day, and overtime was eliminated. Therefore, the novel integrated approach allows the increase of sustainability in the company and the operators' well-being by making a better use of the human factor, eliminating overtime, and increasing production capacity. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are dedicated to the professionalization of human capital; to accomplish this, the link with the productive sector is an active component that must be strengthened through formal mechanisms. The purpose of this paper is to estimate the relationships and effects from the Institutional Framework (IF), as well as from the independent variables in the context of linking HEI with the industrial sector. Survey data were collected from 47 HEIs in the Northwest of Mexico; a mixed research approach was applied and analyzed through the partial least-squares structural equations modeling (PLS-SEM) technique. Although the IF is identified as a relevant aspect for the model, this is not a problem for Mexican HEIs, since the analysis reflects a solid legal framework regarding the common basic levels and research. The main impact for experts who carry out research activities is that the route to creating, maintaining, and promoting integrated academic, technical, and administrative personnel as a specialized work team is not achieved. The main factor that does not contribute for researchers who carry out research activities is that the route to integrating (creating–maintaining–promoting) academic, technical, and administrative personnel as a specialized work team is not achieved. One finding is that the informants agree with the existing stimuli that are not aimed at research linked to the industrial sector and problem-solving through applied research.
