Abstract

The article discusses the perennial problem of alcohol abuse in the U.S. Army which continues to challenge commanders and health care providers. It cites the link of alcohol abuse to the near-defeat of the Texian forces in a battle at Fort Sam Houston, Texas which became the home of Army medicine. It adds that the values and cultural characteristics of the young volunteers who comprised the backbone of the 1836 revolutionary army of Texas were predisposed to drink to excess.
