The Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity, operating on the surface of Mars, is exposed to radiation fluxes from above and below. Galactic Cosmic Rays travel through the Martian atmosphere, producing a modified spectrum consisting of both primary and secondary particles at ground level. These particles produce an upward directed secondary particle spectrum as they interact with the Martian soil. Here we develop a method to distinguish the upward and downward directed particle fluxes in the Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) instrument, verify it using data taken during the cruise to Mars, and apply it to data taken on the Martian surface. We use a combination of Geant4 and Planetocosmics modeling to find discrimination criteria for the flux directions. After developing models of the cruise phase and surface shielding conditions, we compare model‐predicted values for the ratio of upward to downward flux with those found in RAD observation data. Given the quality of available information on Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft and rover composition, we find generally reasonable agreement between our models and RAD observation data. This demonstrates the feasibility of the method developed and tested here. The Radiation Assessment Detector, RAD, is one of the ten instruments that make up the science payload of the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover. RAD is an energetic particle detector, capable of measuring the charged and neutral particles that make significant contributions to the radiation dose that will be received by future human explorers when they visit Mars. Prior to the launch of MSL in November 2011, RAD and its near-identical twin flight spare unit were calibrated using laboratory sources, charged particle beams, and neutron fields. The initial calibration parameters obtained in these tests were used for real-time data analysis by the instrument's onboard software. These parameters have subsequently been refined using data obtained during the cruise to Mars and during Curiosity's mission on the surface of Mars. The most critical use of calibration is in the dosimetry analysis performed onboard. Calibration is also used in onboard analysis to determine which events should be stored for telemetry to Earth. Accelerator data obtained with the flight spare unit after Curiosity was launched provide detailed information about the response of the organic and inorganic scintillators to ion beams over a wide range of charge and energy. Here we report on the methods used to determine calibration parameters, the results obtained, as well as providing an overview of the modifications to the instrument's software and configuration that have been made over the course of the mission. The Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD), on board the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover Curiosity, measures the energetic charged and neutral particles and the radiation dose rate on the surface of Mars. Although charged and neutral particle spectra have been investigated in detail, the electron and positron spectra have not been investigated yet. The reason for that is that they are difficult to separate from each other and because of the technical challenges involved in extracting energy spectra from the raw data. We use GEANT4 to model the behavior of the RAD instrument for electron/positron measurements.We compare Planetocosmics predictions for different atmospheric pressures and different modulation parameters Φ with the obtained RAD electron/positron measurements.We find that the RAD electron/positron measurements agree well with the spectra predicted by Planetocosmics. Both RAD measurements and Planetocosmics simulation show a dependence of the electron/ positron fluxes on both atmospheric pressure and solar modulation potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Extreme, abrupt Northern Hemisphere climate oscillations during the last glacial cycle (140,000 years ago to present) were modulated by changes in ocean circulation and atmospheric forcing. However, the variability of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), which has a role in controlling heat transport from low to high latitudes and in ocean CO2 storage, is still poorly constrained beyond the Last Glacial Maximum. Here we show that a deep and vigorous overturning circulation mode has persisted for most of the last glacial cycle, dominating ocean circulation in the Atlantic, whereas a shallower glacial mode with southern-sourced waters filling the deep western North Atlantic prevailed during glacial maxima. Our results are based on a reconstruction of both the strength and the direction of the AMOC during the last glacial cycle from a highly resolved marine sedimentary record in the deep western North Atlantic. Parallel measurements of two independent chemical water tracers (the isotope ratios of 231Pa/230Th and 143Nd/144Nd), which are not directly affected by changes in the global cycle, reveal consistent responses of the AMOC during the last two glacial terminations. Any significant deviations from this configuration, resulting in slowdowns of the AMOC, were restricted to centennial-scale excursions during catastrophic iceberg discharges of the Heinrich stadials. Severe and multicentennial weakening of North Atlantic Deep Water formation occurred only during Heinrich stadials close to glacial maxima with increased ice coverage, probably as a result of increased fresh-water input. In contrast, the AMOC was relatively insensitive to submillennial meltwater pulses during warmer climate states, and an active AMOC prevailed during Dansgaard-Oeschger interstadials (Greenland warm periods). The Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) on the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) is an energetic particle detector designed to measure a broad spectrum of energetic particle radiation. It will make the first-ever direct radiation measurements on the surface of Mars, detecting galactic cosmic rays, solar energetic particles, secondary neutrons, and other secondary particles created both in the atmosphere and in the Martian regolith. The radiation environment on Mars, both past and present, may have implications for habitability and the ability to sustain life. Radiation exposure is also a major concern for future human missions. The RAD instrument combines charged- and neutral-particle detection capability over a wide dynamic range in a compact, low-mass, low-power instrument. These capabilities are required in order to measure all the important components of the radiation environment. RAD consists of the RAD Sensor Head (RSH) and the RAD Electronics Box (REB) integrated together in a small, compact volume. The RSH contains a solid-state detector telescope with three silicon PIN diodes for charged particle detection, a thallium doped Cesium Iodide scintillator, plastic scintillators for neutron detection and anti-coincidence shielding, and the front-end electronics. The REB contains three circuit boards, one with a novel mixed-signal ASIC for processing analog signals and an associated control FPGA, another with a second FPGA to communicate with the rover and perform onboard analysis of science data, and a third board with power supplies and power cycling or 'sleep'-control electronics. The latter enables autonomous operation, independent of commands from the rover. The basophil activation test (BAT), which relies on flow cytometric quantitation of the allergen-induced up-regulation of the granule-associated marker CD63 in peripheral blood basophils, has been suggested to be a useful approach in detecting responsiveness to allergens. The purpose of this study was to establish the usefulness of the BAT with regard to the clinical history and current diagnostic tools in Hymenoptera venom allergy using a prospective study design.Fifty-seven consecutive patients allergic to Hymenoptera venom as defined by a systemic reaction after an insect sting, and 30 age- and sex-matched control subjects with a negative history were included. The degree and nature of sensitization was confirmed by skin testing, specific immunoglobulin E (IgE), serum tryptase levels and BAT. In the nonallergic control group only analysis of specific IgE and BAT were performed. Correlation of BAT, skin test and specific IgE, respectively, with the clinical history in the allergic group was termed as sensitivity and in the control group as specificity.Twenty one of 23 (91.3%) bee venom allergic patients and 29 of 34 (85.3%) patients allergic to wasp and hornet venom tested positive in BAT. The overall sensitivity of BAT, specific IgE and skin tests were 87.7, 91.2 and 93.0%, respectively. The overall specificities were 86.7% for BAT and 66.7% for specific IgE. No correlation between the severity of clinical symptoms and the magnitude of basophil activation was observed.The BAT seems to be an appropriate method to identify patients allergic to bee or wasp venom with a comparable sensitivity to standard diagnostic regimens. The higher specificity of BAT as compared with specific IgE makes this test a useful tool in the diagnosis of Hymenoptera venom allergy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anhand, eines Kollektivs von 141 querschnittgelähmten Patienten mit insgesamt 331 Druckgeschwüren wurden die histologischen Veränderungen des Haut- und Knochengewebes im Ulkusbereich untersucht und zum Teil den röntgenologischen Befunden gegenübergestellt (die Rückenmarksläsion war überwiegend (45 %) im Bereich Thl2 bis Ll lokalisiert, die Druckulzera hatten sich grösBtenteils (64,0 % ) über beiden Sitzbeinen entwickelt). - In 14,2 % hatte sich eine pseudokarzinomatöse Epidermishyperplasie entwickelt, einmal ein Narbenkarzinom. In 56,9% war das Knochengewebe unterhalb des Ulk us nicht beteiligt, in 28,5% war eine chronische Osteomyelitis verschiedenen Schweregrades entstanden. Bei 73,6% der Patienten, bei denen Röntgenbilder vorlagen, konnte die Diagnose einer chronischen Osteomyelitis auch röntgenologisch gestellt werden. Anzahl und AusmasB der histologischen Haut- und Knochenveränderungen rechtfertigen nachhaltig die heute angewandte radikale chirurgische Therapie der Druckgeschwüre - eindeutige Hinweise auf ätiologie und Pathogenese der Ulzera liesBen unsere Untersuchungen nicht zu. 331 pressure sores of 141 patients with paraplegia were investigated histologically, the results were partly correlated with the roentgenological features. The level of the spinal cord lesion was the segment Thl2-L1 in 45 %, the decubital ulcers were mostly localized above the os ischiadicum (64 % ). A pseudocancerosis was diagnosed in 14.2 %, one time a cancer in a sacral decubitus has been found. The inflammation was limited to the soft tissue in 56.9%, in 28.5 % a chronic osteomyelitis of different severity had developed. In 73.6 % of the patients with a histologically proven osteomyelitis this osteomyelitis could be diagnosed roentgenologically too. The high amount and severity of the dermal and bony lesions justifies the radical surgical therapy of the pressure sores, which is practised today. Our investigations of chronic pressure sores did not point out new aspects of aetiology of pathogenesis - this is only possible by experimental models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Isolated rat NILs were incubated in Krebs-HEPES solution. The release of dopamine and its metabolites (DOPAC, HVA and MOPET) was determined by HPLC with electrochemical detection. The spontaneous release of the sum of metabolites was about 40 times that of dopamine. The spontaneous outflow of dopamine metabolites was unaffected after inhibition of dopamine uptake (by GBR 12921) or after pretreatment with reserpine (5 mg/kg, 12 h before the experiments), but it was reduced by 50% after preincubation with the irreversible DOPA decarboxylase inhibitor, (MFMD, 10 μM, for 10 min). The combination of pretreatment with reserpine and preincubation with MFMD resulted in an 80% inhibition of the spontaneous outflow of dopamine metabolites. Treatment with reserpine caused a 98% depletion of the dopamine tissue content, whereas 60 min after exposure to MFMD the dopamine tissue content was decreased by 40%. Electrical stimulation of the pituitary stalk (3-15 Hz, in the presence of GBR 12921) caused a frequency-dependent release of dopamine. Stimulation at 7 or 15 Hz caused also a significant release of dopamine metabolites. After pretreatment with reserpine, the release of dopamine evoked by stimulation at 15 Hz was abolished, whereas the evoked release of the metabolites was only reduced by about 55%. After MFMD, the evoked release of dopamine decreased by a percentage similar to that of dopamine tissue content, but the reduction of the evoked release of metabolites was more pronounced. In conclusion, the spontaneous release of dopamine metabolites from the dopaminergic nerve endings in the NIL largely reflects the catabolism of newly synthesized dopamine. Therefore, a permanent dopamine synthesis (also under resting conditions) is required to maintain the vesicular dopamine pool from which the stimulation-evoked transmitter release is supposed to occur. Lung function was studied double blind and randomized in 5 patients with mild asthma bronchiale and 10 normal adults before and 30, 60 and 90 minutes after one drop of 0.5% Timolol, 0.6% Metipranolol or 0.9% NaCl in each eye. In the asthmatics bronchoconstriction was seen after both β-receptor blocking agents, more pronounced after Timolol than after Metripranolol. There was a decrease in the forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV) of 32, respectively 18%. No changes were observed in the normal subjects. In a separate studie no significant changes were seen in the mean values of 10 other asthmatic subjects after 1% Pindolol, 3% Pilocarpin or 0.9% NaCl. However, in two patients FEV was reduced by 15% and 20% of the control values after applying Pindolol. In summary, not only β-receptorblocking agents without ISA produce a bronchoconstriction in asthmatic subjects, but also β-blocker with ISA in individual cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on the eighth known case of a mature metastasis of a mature teratoma of the testis. In a 19-year-old patient who had undergone a pyeloplasty of the left renal pelvis 6 years before, a mature metastasis of an occult mature teratoma of the testis was found at the former operation site. This case--in addition to those published previously--emphasizes the fact that a mature teratoma of the testis has to be regarded as a malignant tumor in adults. It is supposed that the mature teratoma originates, as other testicular tumors, from carcinoma-in-situ-cells, which are responsible for metastasize and are not detected after lysis. The general charge properties of the hadronic final state produced in μ p and μ d interactions at 280 GeV are investigated. Quark charge retention and local charge compensation is observed. Results are presented from a study of deep inelastic 280 GeV muon-nucleon interactions on the transverse momenta and jet properties of the final state hadrons. The results are analysed in a way which attempts to separate the contributions of hard and soft QCD effects from those that arise from the fragmentation process. The fragmentation models with which the data are compared are the Lund string model, the independent jet model, the QCD parton shower model including soft gluon interference effects, and the firestring model. The discrimination between these models is discussed. Various methods of analysis of the data in terms of hard QCD processes are presented. From a study of the properties of the jet profiles a value of α, to leading order, is determined using the Lund string model, namely α=0.29±0.01 (stat.) ±0.02 (syst.), for Q∼20 GeV. A comparison is made between the properties of the final state hadrons produced in 280 GeV μ p interactions and in e e annihilation. The Lund model of hadroproduction is used as an aid in understanding the differences observed. The hadron distributions from μ p and e e interactions are consistent with the quark parton model assumption of environmental independence, provided that the differences in heavy quark production and hard QCD effects in the two processes are taken into account. A comparison with a K p experiment is also made. Values are also determined for the Lund model parameters σ = 0.410 ± 0.002 ± 0.020 GeV and σ′ = 0.29 GeV, controlling the transverse momenta in fragmentation and intrinsic transverse momenta of the struck quark respectively. New results on proton and antiproton production in the target and current fragmentation regions of high energy muon-nucleon scattering are presented. Proton and antiproton production is investigated as a function of Feynman x and rapidity. No significant difference is observed between production on hydrogen and deuterium targets. Correlations between pp, $$p\bar p$$ and $$\bar p\bar p$$ pairs are analysed and the results are compared with the predictions of the Lund fragmentation model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The multiplicity distributions of charged hadrons produced in the deep inelastic muon-proton scattering at 280 GeV are analysed in various rapidity intervals, as a function of the total hadronic centre of mass energy W ranging from 4-20 GeV. Multiplicity distributions for the backward and forward hemispheres are also analysed separately. The data can be well parameterized by binomial distributions, extending their range of applicability to the case of lepton-proton scattering. The energy and the rapidity dependence of the parameters is presented and a smooth transition from the negative binomial distribution via Poissonian to the ordinary binomial is observed. Dimuon and trimuon events have been studied in deep inelastic muon scattering on an iron target at an incident muon energy of 200 GeV. The events are shown to originate mainly from charm production. Comparison of the measured cross sections with data taken at higher muon energies shows that charm production originates predominantly from transverse virtual photons. Within the framework of the photon gluon fusion model this indicates that the parity of the gluon is odd. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A study of the distribution of the azimuthal angle ϕ of charged hadrons in deep inelastic μ− p scattering is presented. The dependence of the moments of this distribution on the Feynman x variable and the momentum transverse to the virtual photon indicates that non-zero moments arise mainly from the effects of the intrinsic K of the struck quark with < K>>≳(0.44 GeV), and to a lesser extent from QCD processes. The production of strange particles has been studied in a 280 GeV muon nucleon scattering experiment with acceptance and particle identification over a large kinematical range. The data show that at large values of x the interactions take place mostly on a u valence quark in agreement with the basic quarkparton model predictions. This feature results in a strong forward-backward asymmetry in the distribution of strangeness along the rapidity axis. The data are compatible with a strange to non-strange quark suppression factor of ≈0.3 and with a strong suppression of strange diquarks. The distributions of K K pairs show that the two kaons are preferentially produced at neighbouring values of rapidity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inclusive distributions of ρ and ω mesons have been measured in deep inelastic μ- p interactions at 280 GeV/c. A comparison of the ρ cross sections with other leptoproduction experiments is presented. The ω results represent the first observation of this inclusive channel in high energy leptoproduction. The ρ and ω yields are found to be equal as may be expected from the available density of states in isospin space. This contrasts with spin angular momentum where the vector to pseudoscalar meson ratio is suppressed relative to the available number of spin states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Bose-Einstein correlation has been observed for pions in deep inelastic μ p interactions at 280 GeV. The importance of non-interference correlations in the sample of like charge pion pairs and in the sample used for reference is discussed. The pion emission region is found to be roughly spherical in the pair rest frame with a radius of 0.46-0.84 fm and the chaos factor λ is 0.60-1.08. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The energy distribution of inclusive hadrons produced by 280 GeV muons on hydrogen and deuterium targets are compared. The sum of the scaled energy distributions of the positive and negative hadrons is found to be the same for the two targets. The difference of these distributions is observed to factorise in x and z and the z-dependence is found to be independent of the target type and have a form (1− z). The net charge of the hadronic jet is positive at high x even in the case when the scattering takes place on the neutron. The W and Q dependence of the fragmentation functions and of the average multiplicity of charged pions is investigated, using data from the NA9 experiment at the CERN SPS on muon-proton scattering at 280 GeV. A significant increase of pion production with increasing W is observed at fixed Q, leading to a rise of the average charged pion multiplicity, linear in ln W, and of the pion fragmentation function in the central region, i.e. at small | x|. This increase can be understood from the kinematic widening of the cms rapidity range proportional to ln W and the observed W independent height of the rapidity distribution. At fixed W, a rise of the average charged pion multiplicity with Q is observed. This rise appears to be weaker than that observed for all charged hadrons implying a stronger rise with Q for kaons and protons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using a lead glass detector installed in the EMC forward spectrometer radiative photons have been measured in 200 GeV muon-hydrogen collisions. The results are compared with the standard QED one photon emission theory of Mo and Tsai and also with the more recent predictions of a multiphoton emission theory of Chahine. We conclude that there is no evidence for any deviation from the standard theory, in terms of the yield and angular distribution of photons with fractional energy, z>0.7. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The z and p distributions of π mesons produced by the interaction of 200 GeV muons on hydrogen are presented. Comparisons are made with other π and charged hadron data and with the predictions of perturbative QCD. The data show a rise of 〈 p〉 with W which is consistent with QCD, and with z which requires a contribution from a primordial k. The fraction of total energy which appears as π mesons is 0.27±0.05. The yield of wide angle bremsstrahlung photons produced by 120 GeV muons incident on a liquid hydrogen target has been measured in the kinematic range 0.3< y<0.8 and 0.02< x<0.15. These measurements have been compared with the predictions of the standard treatment of radiative corrections and no inconsistencies found in this kinematic range. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The distribution of arrival times of cosmic ray particles has been investigated with two spark counters (horizontal separation 20 cm) and an auxiliary layer of Geiger-Mueller counters. The standard time deviation due to instrumental fluctuations was σ=1.8 ns. Mean time delays of σ=17 ns, as measured by Robinson, have not been detected. Our mean delays of 2.0-2.5 ns are due to extensive air showers, which give varying contributions up to 25% of the counting rates in different runs, depending on absorber thickness above the apparatus. The major part of the events is of small lateral extension; their mean time delay vanishes within the limits of experimental error. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Calcium isolated from various fractions of corals and algae is converted into nitrate and dissolved in a water-ethyleneglycolmonoethylether-dioxane cocktail in the ratio of 1:2:20 using PPO and 1-dimethyl-POPOP as scintillators. 45Ca in sea water is counted directly after dilution of 1:10 with water. The carrier capacity of the system is 3 mmole Ca (NO3)2/23 ml (120 mg Ca). The counting efficiencies at minimum and maximum carrier concentration are 88,7% and 78,5% respectively. The scintillator solvent system is chemically stable and counts are highly reproducible. Instagel in the ratio of 10 ml to 1 ml aqueous solution gives counting efficiencies in the region of 80%. Sea water can be incorporated directly. Algal calcium is counted as the nitrate or the chloride.
