The article discusses the relationship between photography, protest, and the Vietnam War. Particular focus is given to Garry Winogrand's book "The Animals," army photographer Ronald L. Haeberle's photographs of the My Lai massacre, and Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Department of Photography director John Szarkowski's curation of documentary photography. According to the author, Winogrand's book can be read as a satire of U.S. society which highlights the relationship between rationality and animality. Topics discussed include U.S. media coverage of the Vietnam War and the role of subjectivity in documentary photography.
