Globally, poverty and illness are linked, attracting widespread attention. In China, illness contributes to about 40% of rural poverty. This study sought to investigate how healthcare-seeking behavior differs between impoverished and non-impoverished populations within the same Chinese healthcare delivery system. It also sought to understand how differences should be considered when assessing spatial accessibility to provide more accurate recommendations for healthcare resource optimization and promote village revitalization and health equity in China. Methodologically, a survey conducted in May 2019 in Enshi Prefecture (a national impoverished region in Hubei Province, China) collected data on healthcare resource utilization regarding the inpatient and outpatient needs of both impoverished and non-impoverished populations. A Chi-square test compared their respective healthcare-seeking behaviors in three respects (e.g., preference for healthcare institution type, transportation mode, and travel time). Baidu Map data with healthcare institution locations and real-life travel times were then incorporated to assess spatial access to different types of healthcare institutions. Results showed that in Enshi, the most widespread village clinics (low-level) were generally the most utilized healthcare institutions for outpatient visits, with patients usually walking for about 30 min. The middle-level Township Health Centers (THCs) and high-level public hospitals were the most used for inpatient visits, with patients willing to drive up to 30 min to THCs and 60 min to hospitals. Comparatively, the impoverished have more frequent service demands but tend to choose lower-level healthcare institutions, with longer travel times and limited transportation modes. Although 75% of Enshi's area was covered within 30 min by village clinics and 51% of the villages were within 60 min' drive to hospitals, considerable areas remain under-served compared with the shortest travel time targets in China. In conclusion, spatial access to healthcare resources in Enshi must be further improved, especially by strengthening the service capacity of primary healthcare institutions to address the healthcare needs of Enshi's impoverished population. The disparity in healthcare-seeking behavior between different population groups should be fully considered to effectively allocate limited healthcare resources to promote health equity for vulnerable populations as proposed in international and domestic policies. Environmental education (EE) is a concern in modern society. Plant blindness and nature-deficit disorder highlight how important nature contact and plant consciousness is for urban populations. Considering rapid urbanisation, these phenomena are of increasing concern in China. Integrating EE curricula in Chinese cities is necessary to help younger generations appreciate the environment and understand how to address environmental challenges. Based on our EE teaching experiences in Southwest China's largest urban conglomeration, Chengdu, we discuss anecdotes and propose strategies to improve Southwest China's EE, with guidance for future research. Although children are more drawn to animals, EE education should focus on ecosystem-wide approaches rather than entirely zoocentric or anthropocentric perspectives, since these could reinforce the problematic view that plants are merely 'backdrops'. Urban greenspaces should be utilised in active education schemes, with teachers trained via professional EE modules rooted in local environmental concerns and complementing national/regional priorities. EE programmes should actively engage parents, encouraging their interaction with schools during EE activity preparation and venue selection, as their participation can help overcome obsessive safety and liability concerns. Older generations should be encouraged to transmit their own environmental and ecological knowledge, with implications for both cultural resilience and biocultural diversity conservation efforts. Due to the importance of trees in urban ecosystems, it is crucial to understand the distribution, prevalence, and intensity of parasitic mistletoe infection across urban landscapes. In this study, we aimed to understand how various tree-related factors (e.g., tree taxonomy, size, pruning history, nativity, foliage, density, and diversity) might influence mistletoe prevalence and infection intensity across a typical subtropical urban greenspace. We surveyed 6,012 trees representing 96 species, 76 genera, and 44 families across a large, urban university campus in a major Southwest Chinese city. In total, we found 353 mistletoe host trees (prevalence: 5.87%), largely concentrated on the eastern part of campus, partially due to the proximity of waterbodies and a large adjacent greenspace, as well as higher tree density. To understand how predictors affected the prevalence and intensity of mistletoe infection, we used a hurdle model fitting our zero-inflated count data. Four independent variables significantly affected the prevalence of mistletoe infestation, with three demonstrating positive correlations (crown width, tree density, and tree diversity). One variable (evergreen foliage) negatively correlated with mistletoe prevalence. However, only one factor was found to significantly affect mistletoe infection intensity (crown width, positively). Due to the variety of ecosystem services mistletoes provide, more studies are necessary to assess the impact of various mistletoe management strategies, especially on urban biodiversity. Key message: Evidence for the CFE was mixed. New dendrochronological experimental designs are needed, especially in tropical and boreal biomes. A weakness of current methodologies could impede the ability to detect a CFE. The effects of elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide on plant growth and the carbon cycle have stimulated extensive research. Over the last three decades, CO2 enrichment experiments have tested the CO2 fertilization effect (CFE) hypothesis. Yet, CO2 enrichment studies have been criticized for having unrealistic designs. Multiple studies have sought to use tree-ring analyses to verify the CFE under more natural conditions. To assess the breadth of scholarship about CO2 fertilization on tree radial growth, this study conducted a tri-lingual (English, French, and Chinese) literature review. Finding no French, just one Chinese, and 73 English articles directly related to this topic, all 74 relevant tree-ring studies (1984–2020) were reviewed in-depth. We found an underrepresentation of studies from key regions important to the global carbon cycle, particularly tropical and boreal biomes. Evidence for the CFE was mixed: about 32.4% of dendrochronological studies found a CFE, another 23% found radial growth trends explained by both CO2 fertilization and other climatic variables, 5.4% attributed tree growth only to climate change, and 39.2% (primarily in tropical areas) did not find any evidence of a CFE. Synthesized results of global scholarship highlight the need for new dendrochronological experimental designs to exclude climatic and environmental variables and test whether CO2 fertilization occurs in tropical regions. Furthermore, weakness of current methodologies could lessen the ability to detect a CFE. More focused research is necessary from under-represented regions, and to test the effects of increasing anthropogenic activities (such as localized elevated CO2 emissions) on tree growth in nature settings. The article examined the prophetic oracles regarding 'the Day of the Lord' as found in Zechariah 14:1-9 and its implications for the church today. It closely scrutinized the phrase, הִנֵּה יוֹם־בָּא לַיהוה הִנֵּה יוֹם־בָּא לַיהוה, hinn¢h yôm-b10 LAdonay (Behold, a day of the LORD is coming), which conveys a serious warning in Scriptures that must not be taken for granted. The day is of great importance to the Church because it brings to climax God's program of salvation for His people. The consistency of this prophetic utterance of the Day of the Lord, as proclaimed by other prophets, is traced systematically to buttress Zechariah's declaration. The writer gives the historical background of the book of Zechariah, the Hebrew text, along with the literal translation of Zechariah 14:1-9, a careful exegetical and theological analysis of the pericope is also provided with the exegetical discoveries made. The day of the Lord in this article is considered as a special time in history which God has kept in His power to judge the nations, bring to full completion His purpose for Israel as a nation, the Church and to user in His sovereign reign. Objective: The CO2 laser and 532 nm potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) laser have been applied to treat recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP). This systematic review sought to compare outcome differences between these two methods. Data Sources: Embase, Web of Science, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library. Review Methods: CO2 laser and KTP laser studies were obtained by keyword searches of four authoritative medical databases. Articles were screened and retained when conforming to inclusion criteria. The primary outcome was cure rate; the secondary outcomes were recurrence, death, remission, clearance, and human papillomavirus (HPV)‐detected rates, as well as laser effectiveness rates. Postoperative complications rate was the safety outcome measure. All outcomes were summarized within the CO2 and KTP groups, with results statistically compared (p <.05). Results: Overall, the cure rates were 87.25% (KTP group) and 75.98% (CO2 group; p <.05). Complication rates significantly differed between the KTP (2.32%) and CO2 (17.71%) groups (p <.0001). There was a relatively higher but not significant difference in the recurrence rates between the CO2 (18.6%) and KTP (10.87%) groups (p =.1595). The CO2 group remission rate was considerably lower (38.9%) than the KTP group (88.46%, p <.0001). HPV‐detected and clearance rates were only reported for the CO2 group. The bias risks were 13.1 ± 1.45 (CO2) and 13.6 ± 1.52 (KTP) for the two groups, indicating evidence was of fair quality. Conclusion: Overall, KTP laser excision showed significantly better postoperative clinical outcomes than the CO2 laser, with a lower failure rate. Available fair‐quality evidence suggests KTP laser excision might be better for treating RRP. Nevertheless, more high‐quality randomized controlled studies are needed to compare these two surgical techniques, particularly in terms of reporting functional data such as vocal outcomes. We examined the performance of the EEWS in China's Sichuan Province during the 2019 Changning earthquake. Although its technical effectiveness was tested with the first alert released 10 s after the earthquake, we found that a big gap existed between the EEWS's message and the public's response. We highlight the importance of EEWS alert effectiveness and public participation for long-term resiliency, such as delivering useful alert messages through appropriate communication channels and training people to understand and properly respond. Background: Access to healthcare is critical for the implementation of Universal Health Coverage. With the development of healthcare insurance systems around the world, spatial impedance to healthcare institutions has attracted increasing attention. However, most spatial access methodologies have been developed in Western countries, whose healthcare systems are different from those in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). Methods: Hainan Island was taken as an example to explore the utilization of modern spatial access techniques under China's specialized Three-Tier Health Care Delivery System. Healthcare institutions were first classified according to the three tiers. Then shortest travel time was calculated for each institution's tier, overlapped to identify eight types of multilevel healthcare access zones. Spatial access to doctors based on the Enhanced Two-Step Floating Catchment Area Method was also calculated. Results: On Hainan Island, about 90% of the population lived within a 60-min service range for Tier 3 (hospital) healthcare institutions, 80% lived within 30 min of Tier 2 (health centers), and 75% lived within 15 min of Tier 1 (clinics). Based on local policy, 76.36% of the population living in 48.52% of the area were able to receive timely services at all tiers of healthcare institutions. The weighted average access to doctors was 2.31 per thousand residents, but the regional disparity was large, with 64.66% being contributed by Tier 3 healthcare institutions. Conclusion: Spatial access to healthcare institutions on Hainan Island was generally good according to travel time and general abundance of doctors, but inequity between regions and imbalance between different healthcare institution tiers exist. Background: Due to historical perceptions of Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture (Sichuan Province, China) as being a violent place, and due to its rugged terrain, cultural differences, and relative inaccessibility, few researchers have conducted in-depth ethnobotanical investigations in Liangshan. But wild edible plants (WEPs) are widely consumed by the Yi people of Liangshan, and their associated ethnobotanical knowledge remains relatively unknown, especially outside of China. This study aimed to (1) investigate the WEPs used by the Liangshan Yi, (2) document the traditional knowledge held about these plants, (3) analyze their special preparation methods and consumption habits, and (4) identify species with important cultural significance to the Liangshan Yi. Methods: During 2016-2017, 396 Yi individuals were interviewed in 1 county-level city and 6 counties across Liangshan. Prior informed consent was obtained, and multiple ethnographic methods were utilized, including direct observation, semi-structured interviews, key informant interviews, informal discussions, and field visits. Market surveys were conducted in April, July, and August 2017 by interviewing 38 Yi merchants selling WEPs in 6 Liangshan traditional markets. We collected information about the parts consumed, preparation methods, consumption habits, growth pattern of species, collection months, market prices, and other uses of WEPs. Use values (UVs) were calculated to analyze the relative cultural importance of each WEP. Results: In total, 105 plant species belonging to 97 genera and 62 families were recorded. Rosaceae was the family with the largest number of species (14), and herbs (58 species) were the dominant growth form reported. Fruits (34 species), roots (21 species), and tender shoots (20 species) were the primary plant parts used for snacking and cooking. There were 6 main preparation and consumption methods of WEPs reported, ranging from primary food, famine food, snack, spice, culinary coagulant, and medicine, among a few other uses. The Liangshan Yi mainly collect WEPs from March to October, seldom collecting from November to February. There were 35 species of WEPs sold in the markets we visited in Liangshan. The price of medicinal plants was much higher than the price of food and fruits. In total, we documented 49 species of edible medicinal plants in Liangshan, accounting for 44.7% of all WEPs. They can be used for treating 27 medical conditions, including cough, diarrhea, injury, and headaches. The plants with the highest UVs were Berberis jamesiana (1.92), Pyracantha fortuneana (1.87), and Artemisia capillaris (1.44) indicating that these species are the most commonly used and important to the Liangshan Yi's traditional life and culture. Conclusions: The traditional knowledge of WEPs from the accumulated experience of the Yi people's long period residing in Liangshan reflects the cultural richness of the Yi and the plant diversity of the region. Future research on the nutrition, chemical composition, and bioactivity of the WEPs are needed. Some species with high medicinal value but with sharp wild population decline should be surveyed for resource assessment, conservation, and domestication potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: With rapid urbanization worldwide, most people now live in cities, but the effects of urbanization on knowledge about the natural environment is not well studied. Due to the importance of Cymbidium to Chinese traditional culture, we tested how urbanization influences the distribution of orchid knowledge across various knowledge domains at risk of loss due to declining orchid populations. Participants in the Cymbidium trade were interviewed in three distinct urbanization-level jurisdictions in Sichuan, China: Puge (low urbanization), Huili (moderate urbanization) and Chengdu (high urbanization). Using photographic cue-cards of nine Cymbidium taxa, we assessed aggregate and specific knowledge held by 91 orchid collectors/traders across the urbanization gradient. Contrary to expectations, we found that urbanization and orchid knowledge were positively related, but this varied by knowledge type, with moderate urbanization showing significantly higher knowledge in two domains. Our findings suggest that a generalizable understanding of how urbanization affects knowledge must account for differences in knowledge types and geographic/cultural scales, with implications for biocultural diversity conservation in an increasingly urban world. Premise of the study: Declining orchid populations have made it necessary to prioritize the study of population structure and genetic diversity for species including Coelogyne fimbriata (Orchidaceae). Methods and Results: A biotin‐streptavidin capture method was used to construct a microsatellite library for C. fimbriata. A total of 15 polymorphic nuclear microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized using 47 C. fimbriata individuals from two natural populations in China. The number of alleles per locus for the two populations ranged from two to 17. The observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.000 to 1.000 and from 0.000 to 0.867, respectively. Among these polymorphic primers, 11 loci were also successfully amplified in C. ovalis, and 10 loci showed moderate to high‐level polymorphism. Cross‐amplification of the 15 polymorphic loci was tested in five related species: C. cumingii, C. eberhardtii, C. mayeriana, C. peltastes, and C. velutina. Conclusions: Fifteen microsatellites in C. fimbriata and 10 in C. ovalis have moderate to high‐level genetic variation, indicating their utility in population genetic studies, thus contributing to orchid conservation. The article reflects on the efficacy on the application of instructionally supportive accountability tests in the teaching of science in the U.S. It recommends strategies to address the problems on validating the perceived diverse purposes of instructional utility and accountability, designing and collecting evidence. Among the primary recommendations include measuring the mastery of only a few standards, describing the objectives in teacher-palatable language and taking into account results for every assessed curricular aim.

In September 2018, China's air quality monitoring protocol was amended from the standard conditions to actual conditions for particulate matter and to reference conditions for gaseous pollutants. Due to the amendment, the reported concentrations of the gaseous pollutants decreased by a constant rate of 8.4%, and the averages of PM2.5 (particulate matter that has an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 microns or smaller) reported during September 2017 and August 2018 decreased by 7.9 ± 6.1% at 99% of the monitoring stations. Comparing the periods before and after the amendment, the 12-month PM2.5 concentrations at 17.2% of the stations actually increased despite appearing to decrease if the amendments were not considered. We reviewed 370 papers published in 2020 that utilized this air quality dataset, and 21% of these papers used the data before and after the amendment without explicitly stating whether or how conversions were conducted. Three-dimensional electrodes that are controllable over multiple lengthscales are very important for use in bioanalytical systems that integrate solid-phase devices with solution-phase samples. Here we present a fabrication method based on all-solution-processing and thin film wrinkling using smart polymers that is ideal for rapid prototyping of tunable three-dimensional electrodes and is extendable to large volume manufacturing. Although all-solution-processing is an attractive alternative to vapor-based techniques for low-cost manufacturing of electrodes, it often results in films suffering from low conductivity and poor substrate adhesion. These limitations are addressed here by using a smart polymer to create a conformal layer of overlapping wrinkles on the substrate to shorten the current path and embed the conductor onto the polymer layer. The structural evolution of these wrinkled electrodes, deposited by electroless deposition onto a nanoparticle seed layer, is studied at varying deposition times to understand its effects on structural parameters such as porosity, wrinkle wavelength and height. Furthermore, the effect of structural parameters on functional properties such as electro-active surface area and surface-enhanced Raman scattering is investigated. It is found that wrinkling of electroless-deposited thin films can be used to reduce sheet resistance, increase surface area, and enhance the surface-enhanced Raman scattering signal.
