Aim: Cancer stands as a significant health issue in our era, with lung cancer being among the most widespread types in both Turkey and worldwide. The diagnosis may be delayed due to the late detection of symptoms and signs. Cancer stem cells cause the initiation and progression of cancer. There is a risk of cancer recurrence due to cancer stem cells that cannot be destroyed. Therefore, it is important to detect cancer stem cells and prevent the proliferation of these stem cells. Materials and Methods: In the Pathology Department of Pamukkale University Faculty of Medicine, 72 squamous cell carcinoma and 51 adenocarcinoma cases diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer were retrospectively examined. Nucleostemin and CD133 expression levels were evaluated immunohistochemically in sections taken from cancerous tissue samples of the cases. Results: Disease-free survival and tumor stages of the cases and immunohistochemical expression level were compared. Nucleostemin and CD133 expression was commonly observed in tumor tissue from both adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma cases. Conclusion: Therefore, in line with the data we obtained, we think that both nucleostemin and CD133 cannot be used as prognostic markers in non-small cell lung cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fourth limitation of the present study is that even though the procedure is applied by a single surgeon (using surgical loop), rats are fragile animals for anastomosis surgery due to their small size and differences that are not visible to the naked eye, which may have taken place during the surgery of each animal. We investigated whether tracheal stenosis surgery's success was related to the periods of the post-injury wound healing process and analyzed the availableness of biomarkers in determining the appropriate period for surgery. [4] Surgical treatments are applied in post-intubation tracheal stenosis patients with high effectivity, and studies have focused on reducing anastomosis tension and end-to-end anastomosis of healthy mucosa. - Abstract
Purpose: Sometimes, characterization of pleural effusion (PE) can be challenging especially in patients whom invasive procedures/recurrent invasive procedures cannot be performed. The main purpose of the study is to answer this question, Can
18 F-FDG-PET/CT contribute to reduction in the number of invasive procedures or patients undergoing to invasive procedures? Results may increase the effectiveness of patient management by facilitating clinical decision-making, especially in patients who cannot undergo invasive/recurrent invasive procedures. Methods: Sixty-seven patients'18 F-FDG-PET/CT, pleural fluid cytologies (PFCs) and, if any, pleural biopsies were re-assessed. If patient's PFC/biopsy was malignant, effusion was considered as malignant. If two consecutive PFCs were negative in patients without biopsy, effusion was considered as benign. Characterization was based on consensus with baseline/follow-up18 F-FDG-PET/CT and clinical parameters in patients with one negative PFC (n = 6). Results: None of the18 F-FDG-PET/CT parameters could characterize PE alone. However, if PE maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax ) > 1.3 or PE SUVmax /mean standardized uptake value of mediastinal blood pool (MBP SUVmean ) > 1.2 was combined with at least one of the following, specificity and positive predictive value (PPV) were 100%, accuracy was around 90%. Diffuse-nodular/nodular pleural thickness, post-obstructive atelectasis, nodule/mass with SUVmax > 2.5 in lung, multiple pulmonary nodules. All 29 patients who had SUVmax > 1.3 together with at least one of the mentioned four parameters diagnosed malignant pleural effusion (MPE). However, sensitivity and negative predictive value (NPV) were still insufficient. Conclusion: Patients who have contraindications for invasive diagnostic methods, and meet the aforementioned criteria may be considered as MPE primarily. On the other hand, if PE SUVmax < 1.3 or PE SUVmax /MBP SUVmean < 1.2 with the negativity of the all four parameters mentioned above, it is difficult to say that this can be considered as benign pleural effusion (BPE) according to our results. Aim: The excision repair cross-complementation group 1 (ERCC-1) protein is a potential prognostic biomarker of the efficacy of platinum-based chemotherapy in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathology and prognostic significance of ERCC-1 expression, ERCC-1 (19q13) amplification in NSCLC patients; and the relationship between platinum-based chemotherapy. Materials and Methods: We used the ERCC-1 antibody to measure the level of expression of ERCC-1 protein by immunohistochemical analysis from 351 patients and ERCC-1 gene copy number was evaluated by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in tumors from 81 patients. Results: ERCC-1 expression in tumor cells was positive in 312 patients (88.9%). The ERCC-1 amplification in tumor cells was positive in 58 patients (71.6%) out of 81. The ERCC-1 amplification was also more frequent in early-stage tumors than late-stage tumors (p = 0.025). In the patients with positive ERCC-1 expression, longer overall survival was associated with early stage NSCLC (p = 0.001). Patients having adenocarcinoma with negative ERCC-1 expression demonstrated longer overall survival than patients with squamous cell carcinoma (p = 0.037). Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that increased ERCC-1 amplification is not associated with ERCC-1 protein expression. High ERCC-1 expression in patients with early-stage NSCLC is a good prognostic factor, although it is a negative predictor, indicating treatment resistance, in patients with advanced-stage NSCLC receiving platinum-based chemotherapy. We suggest that patients having adenocarcinoma with negative ERCC-1 expression benefit more with platinum-based chemotherapies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to determine the parameters that can be used to predict malignancy in persistent cervical lymphadenopathies. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the files of 162 patients diagnosed with persistent cervical lymphadenopathy who underwent an excisional biopsy in our department between January 2011 and October 2019. Patient demographics and the size, side, duration, and localization of lymphadenopathy were recorded, and their relationship with histopathological results was investigated. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between clinical parameters and malignancy. RESULTS: Of the 162 patients, 91 (56.2%) were male and 71 (43.8%) were female, and the mean age was 45.40±20.41 (2-84) years. Male gender (OR=3.099; p=0.003), increasing age (OR=1.029; p=0.002), short duration of lymphadenopathy (OR=0.989; p=0.048), and neck level V (OR=2.604; p=0.031) patients had a statistically significantly higher risk of malignancy. There was no statistically significant relationship between the side and size of the lymph node and the risk of malignancy (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: In our study, male gender was determined to be the most predictive risk factor for malignancy in patients with cervical lymphadenopathy, followed by lymph node neck level, increased age, and duration of the disease. CD3 antigen ,CD4 antigen ,OVARIAN epithelial cancer ,CARCINOGENESIS ,CANCER chemotherapy - Abstract
Objectives: Ovarian cancer is a heterogeneous disease, where chronic inflammation plays a key role in carcinogenesis. In this study, it is aimed to analyze the relationship with prognosis and chemotherapy response to clinicopathological variables in epithelial ovarian cancers such as proliferation of PD-1 +, CD8 +, CD4 +, CD3 + T-lymphocytes infiltrating the tumor and tumor stroma. Matrial and methods: Seventy-six cases diagnosed with primary epithelial ovarian tumor from biopsy or surgical resection materials were included in the study. Immunreactivity of CD3, CD4, CD8, PD1 was evaluated immunohistochemically in lymphocytes in tumor infiltrating lymphocytes and stromal lymphocytes. Results: Seventeen (22.4%) of the cases were Type I, 59 (77.6%) of them were Type II ovarian carcinoma. PD-1 positivity was observed in stromal and intraepithelial lymphocytes in 22 (28.9%) of 76 cases. In the presence of PD-1 + T-lymphocytes that infiltrate tumor and stroma, disease-free survival are shorter (p = 0.037). The presence of stromal CD4 + and CD8 + T-lym-phocytes was more common in late stage patients (p = 0.012, p = 0.036; respectively). The disease-free and overall survival rate was statistically significantly shorter in the presence of CD8 + T lymphocytes (p = 0.009, p = 0.003; respectively). Conclusions: CD3, CD4 and CD8 may contribute to PD-1 mediated tumor control. Anti PD-1 therapy may be an alternative to chemotherapy in PD-1 positive patients. Identifying patients who do not respond to chemotherapy through PD-1 expression prior to immunotherapy will help develop potential personalized immunotherapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SALIVARY gland tumors ,HISTOPATHOLOGY ,PAROTID gland diseases ,HISTOLOGY ,SUBMANDIBULAR gland - Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To determine the demographic characteristics of benign and malignant salivary gland tumors in our department in the last 15 years. METHODS: In this study, the files of the patients who underwent salivary gland surgery between 2004 and 2019 in our department were analyzed retrospectively. A total of 366 patients whose diagnoses of salivary gland tumor histopathologically confirmed were included in this study. The demographic data of the patients and tumor localizations were recorded, and their relationships with histopathological results were examined. RESULTS: Of the 366 tumors, 292 (80%) of them was originated from the parotid gland, 52 (14%) from the submandibular gland, and 22 (6%) from the minor salivary gland. The male: female ratio was found as 1.2:1, and the mean age of the patients was 50.37 years. A total of 259 (70.8%) tumors were benign, and 107 (29.2%) were malignant. The most frequent benign tumor was pleomorphic adenoma, with 121 cases (46.7%). While pleomorphic adenomas constituted the majority of the benign tumors of the submandibular gland and minor salivary glands, Warthin tumor was detected more than pleomorphic adenoma in the parotid gland. The most common malignant tumor was mucoepidermoid carcinoma, with 26 cases (24.3%). CONCLUSION: The distribution of the salivary gland tumors detected in our department was found to be substantially similar to other worldwide series. Unlike the literature, we concluded that salivary gland tumors were seen slightly more in males, minor salivary gland tumors were relatively rare and Warthin tumors were more frequently detected in our region. Introduction:
18 F-FDG PET/CT provides very effective results in detecting metastases of breast cancer. In our study, we investigated the relationship between maximum standard uptake value (SUVmax) and prognostic pathologic factors in breast cancer cases with isolated bone metastasis and whether there was any difference in terms of prognostic pathologic factors between the group with and without bone metastasis. Methods: Between 2013 and 2016, isolated bone metastases (55 female; 56±12 years; 32-87), and non-metastatic (46 female; 55±13 years; 30-81) patients who were referred to department of nuclear medicine and underwent18 F-FDG PET/CT for staging were included in the study. PET/CT images of patients and pathologic prognostic factors were evaluated retrospectively. SUVmax value of the most intense activity from metastatic bone lesions was calculated. p <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: In the metastatic group, there was no statistically significant relationship between measured SUVmax value of bone metastasis and pathologic prognostic factors. A statistically significant difference was found between the metastatic group and the non-metastatic group in terms of lymph node stage, lymphovascular/perineural invasion. The lymph node stage in the metastatic group was higher than the non-metastatic group. The presence of lymphovascular/perineural invasion in bone metastasis cases was more than in the non-metastatic group. Conclusion: In our study, it was determined that there was a relationship between the lymph node stage, lymphovascular/perineural invasion and formation of bone metastasis in breast cancer. Between SUVmax values and other factors in the metastatic group, no significant relationship was detected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate the accuracy of detecting pulmonary embolism (PE) using the Technegas SPECT/CT combined with
68 Ga PET/CT in a rabbit model. One hour after artificial PE (n = 6) and sham (n = 6) models were created, Technegas SPECT/CT ventilation and68 Ga-MAA PET/CT perfusion scan (V/Q scan) were performed. Ventilation imaging was performed first on all cases. Technegas SPECT/CT and68 Ga-MAA PET/CT images were evaluated by a nuclear medicine physician who recorded the presence, number, and location of PE on a per-lobe basis. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of Technegas SPECT/CT and68 Ga-MAA PET/CT for detecting PE were calculated using a histopathological evaluation as a reference standard. A total of 60 lung lobes were evaluated in 12 rabbits, and PE was detected in 20 lobes in V/Q scans and histopathological analysis. The overall sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were 100%, 100%, and 100%, respectively, for both the Technegas SPECT/CT and68 Ga-MAA PET/CT V/Q scans. Technegas/68 Ga-MAA V/Q scans have good sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy in the detection of PE in this animal model study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Purpose: To investigate the effect of Hypericum perforatum on corneal alkali burn. Methods: We studied 45 250 g weighing, 4 months old Wistar albino rats. Alkaline burns were performed in the corneas of all experimental animals with 2 mol/L NaOH after general anaesthesia. Rats were divided into five groups according to the subsequent process applied to them: group 1 was the topical Hypericum perforatum group, group 2 was the topical pure olive oil group, group 3 was the oral Hypericum perforatum group, group 4 was the oral pure olive oil group, and group 5 was the control untreated group. Rats were sacrificed under general anaesthesia on the 14 day. The rate of corneal inflammation, neovascularization, fibroblastic activity, and cluster of differentiation 31 (CD31) staining was investigated. Result: There were 45 rats at the beginning of the study. One rat in groups 1, 2, and 3 died during the study; therefore, 42 rats could be evaluated. There were 8 rats in group 1, 8 rats in group 2, 8 rats in group 3, and 9 rats in group 4. We found less corneal neovascularization (CNV), inflammation, and fibroblastic activity in group 1 and group 2 than in the other groups (p ˂ 0.001 for all parameters). CNV, inflammation, fibroblastic activity, and CD31 staining rates were lower in group 1 than in group 2 (p ˂ 0.001 for all parameters). There was no difference between groups 3, 4, and 5 (respectively, p = 0.436, 0.634, and 0.750). Conclusions: We found that both topical Hypericum perforatum oily extract and olive oil have anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenic, and anti-fibroblastic effects when applied after corneal alkali burns in rat corneas. Further studies should be conducted in this field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality in premature infants. There is currently no proven effective treatment modality for BPD, and inflammation and oxidative injury play an important role in the pathogenesis of this disease. This study investigated the histopathological and biochemical effects of bosentan, which is a non‐specific endothelin receptor antagonist with known antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory properties, on hyperoxia‐induced lung injury (HILI) in neonatal rats. Methods: The experiment was performed on newborn rats from the 3rd to the 13th postnatal day. The rats were randomly divided into six groups: Group 1 (air‐exposed + saline, n = 6); Group 2 (HILI, n = 8); Group 3 (air‐exposed + bosentan, n = 7); Group 4 (HILI + saline, n = 7); Group 5 (HILI + early bosentan‐treated group, n = 6), and Group 6 (HILI + late bosentan‐treated group, n = 7). Bosentan was administered (30 mg/kg/day) intraperitoneally. The histopathological effects of bosentan on lung tissue were assessed by their alveolar surface area, fibrosis, and smooth muscle actin (SMA) scores, and the biochemical effects on lung tissue were assessed by interleukin‐1 beta (IL‐1β), IL‐6, IL‐10, and tumor necrosis factor‐alpha (TNF‐α). Results: The alveolar surface area and fibrosis scores were found to be significantly higher in HILI groups compared with Group 1 (P < 0.01). The SMA scores in HILI groups were also significantly higher than Group 1 (P < 0.01). Bosentan treatment, especially late therapy, reduced all of these histopathological scores and the levels of IL‐6 and TNF‐α in the hyperoxia groups (P < 0.01). Conclusion: This experimental study showed that bosentan had a protective effect on hyperoxic lung injury through its anti‐inflammatory properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to investigate Napsin-A, NTRK-1, NTRK-2, Desmoglein-3, and Desmocollin-3 in the differential diagnosis and prognosis of nonsmall cell lung cancer. Materials and methods: The expression of Napsin-A, NTRK-1, NTRK-2, and Desmoglein-3 was examined by immunohistochemistry in 50 squamous cell carcinomas and 50 adenocarcinomas. Desmocollin-3 was investigated in 29 squamous cell carcinoma and 29 adenocarcinoma cases. Associations between expression profiles of Napsin-A, NTRK-1, NTRK-2, Desmoglein-3, and Desmocollin-3 in lung cancers and clinicopathological variables were analyzed. Results: Napsin-A staining was statistically significant in detecting adenocarcinomas versus squamous cell carcinomas. The sensitivity of Napsin-A for adenocarcinomas was 96% and the specificity was 100%. NTRK-2 and Desmocollin-3 staining were statistically significant in detecting squamous cell carcinomas versus adenocarcinomas. Desmoglein-3, Napsin-A, and NTRK-2 had no effect on survival. Disease-free survival time was significantly shorter in cases that were moderately positive with NTRK-1. Conclusion: Our data suggest that Napsin-A, NTRK-2, and Desmocollin-3 are useful markers in the differentiation of nonsmall cell lung cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gentamicin is the preferred antimicrobial agent used in implant coating for the prevention of implant-related infections (IRI). However, the present heavy local and systemic administration of gentamicin can lead to increased resistance, which has made its future use uncertain, together with related preventive technologies. Fosfomycin is an alternative antimicrobial agent that lacks the cross-resistance presented by other classes of antibiotics. We evaluated the efficacy of prophylaxis of 10% fosfomycin-containing poly(
D ,L -lactide) (PDL) coated K-wires in a rat IRI model and compared it with uncoated (Control 1), PDL-coated (Control 2), and 10% gentamicin-containing PDL-coated groups with a single layer of coating. Stainless steel K-wires were implanted and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 43300) suspensions (103 CFU/10 μl) were injected into a cavity in the left tibiae. Thereafter, K-wires were removed and cultured in tryptic soy broth and then 5% sheep blood agar mediums. Sliced sections were removed from the tibiae, stained with hematoxylin-eosin, and semi-quantitatively evaluated with X-rays. The addition of fosfomycin into PDL did not affect the X-ray and histopathological evaluation scores; however, the addition of gentamicin lowered them. The addition of gentamicin showed a protective effect after the 28th day of X-ray evaluations. PDL-only coating provided no protection, while adding fosfomycin to PDL offered a 20% level protection and adding gentamicin offered 80%. Furthermore, there were 103 CFU level growths in the gentamicin-added group, while the other groups had 105 . Thus, the addition of fosfomycin to PDL does not affect the efficacy of prophylaxis, but the addition of gentamicin does. We therefore do not advise the use of fosfomycin as a single antimicrobial agent in coating for IRI prophylaxis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
Mucormycosis is increasingly common in patients with risk factors such as diabetes mellitus, neutropenia, and corticosteroid therapy. However, mucormycosis seems to be less common in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection compared to patients with other risk factors. Despite their lower virulence, Lichtheimia species should be regarded as emerging pathogens among Mucoralean fungi. We report a fatal case of pulmonary mucormycosis due to Lichtheimia ramosa in a 52-year-old man with an end-stage HIV infection. He had a cachectic appearance and his CD4 count was 8 cells/mm. The fungal infection was diagnosed based on a positive sputum culture with histopathologic confirmation. The fungus was resistant to caspofungin, anidulafungin, and voriconazole [minimum inhibitory concentration (MCI) >32 µg/ml], whereas the E test MIC values of itraconazole, posaconazole, and amphotericin B were 0.38, 0.38, and 0.5 µg/ml, respectively. Although intravenous drug use is the main risk factor for the development of mucormycosis in HIV-infected patients, it may also develop in patients with low CD4 count, opportunistic infections and/or additional diseases, such as Kaposi's sarcoma or severe immunodeficiency, as in our case. - Abstract
We present the case of a patient with malignant melanoma of the glans penis and urethral meatus, which was found in a 60-year-old man with non-healing ulcerative penile lesion and bilateral clinically palpable inguinal lymphadenopathies at diagnosis. A diagnostic biopsy showed the characteristics of a malignant melanoma. Incisional biopsies from the cutaneous lesions on his glans penis and urethra were performed. Histopathological examination of both specimens showed generally ulceronecrotic surface and numerous atypical melanocytic cells. The diagnosis of giant cell melanoma was made. Two months later, bilateral inguinal lymph nodes dissection was performed. Histopathological examination of both specimens demonstrated malignant melanoma metastasis. Three months after the diagnosis, the patient underwent partial penectomy. High-dose interferon-alpha-2b treatment was started. Early diagnosis is of paramount importance, as the prognosis becomes very poor with an advanced tumor stage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare neoplasm, which is derived of mesenchymal origin. Here we present an adult case with IMT, the origin of which was considered to be right inferior pulmonary vein. A male patient who was 52 years old, admitted to our outpatient clinic with the complaint of shortness of breath. He had cigarette smoking history for 30 years. On direct posterior -anterior X-Ray of the chest, a well-circumscribed mass with calcification in right hilum of the lung was observed. There was a mass which was extending to the inferior inferior pulmonary vein from right hilum of the lung, was measured 70 x 60 mm on computed tomography of the chest. Hamartoma, teratoma and Castleman Disease were among the possible diagnoses. On diagnostic bronchoscopy, signs of pressure from outside to the bronchi of the right middle and lower lobe was observed. Surgical excision is decided and the mass was totally excised through a muscle-sparing thoracotomy. The mass thought to arise from the inferior pulmonary vein on intraoperative inspection and right inferior lobe excision is undertaken by intrapericardial approach. No postoperative complication is encountered. Histological examination of the mass indicated inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. Main treatment of IMT is surgical excision with negative surgical margin. Here in we present an IMT which is encountered at an unexpected location is excised completely with right lower lobe excision by an intrapericardial approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
A single case of colonic atresia (CA) associated with type A intestinal neuronal dysplasia has been reported in the literature. This article describes a newborn with CA associated with diffuse type B intestinal neuronal dysplasia. A 2-day-old fullterm boy presented with marked abdominal distention, milk intolerance, and bilious vomiting. Type III CA was detected at laparotomy, and a mucous fistula colostomy was performed. The colostomy functioned poorly postoperatively, so an ileostomy was performed. Pathology reported that ganglion cells were evident in the specimens, however, the ileostomy did not function adequately. A second laparotomy was performed, and a re-stoma was fashioned. All previous pathology slides were reviewed, and diffuse type B intestinal neuronal dysplasia was detected. The patient died of septicemia at 34 d old. Specimens of patients with CA should be examined carefully so that dysganglionoses can be ruled out. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC) is a low-molecular thiol antioxidant and potent inhibitor of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activation. It has been shown to attenuate local harmful effects of ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in many organs. In this study, we aimed to study the effect of PDTC on lung reperfusion injury induced by superior mesenteric occlusion. Male Wistar-albino rats randomized into three groups: (1) sham-operated control group ( n = 12), laparotomy without I/R injury; (2) intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) group ( n = 12), 60 min of ischemia by superior mesenteric occlusion followed by 2 h of reperfusion; and (3) I/R+PDTC-treated group ( n = 12), 100 mg/kg injection of PDTC intravenously, 30 min after the commencement of reperfusion. Evans blue dye was injected to half of rats in all groups before the induction of I/R. We assessed the degree of pulmonary tissue injury biochemically by measuring malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), and nitric oxide (NO) levels, and histopathologically by establishing pulmonary neutrophil sequestration and acute lung injury scoring. Pulmonary edema was evaluated by Evans blue dye extravasation, as well as lung tissue wet/dry weight ratios. Pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate treatment significantly reduced the MDA and NO levels, and increased the GSH levels in the lung parenchyma, biochemically ( p < 0.05), and atteneuated the pulmonary parenchymal damage, histopathologically ( p < 0.05). However, pulmonary neutrophil sequestration was not affected by postischemic treatment with PDTC ( p > 0.05). Pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate administration also significantly alleviated the formation of pulmonary edema, as evidenced by the decreased Evans blue dye extravasation and organ wet/dry weight ratios ( p < 0.05). This study showed that postischemic treatment with PDTC significantly attenuated the lung reperfusion injury. Further clinical studies are needed for better understanding of the specific mechanisms of PDTC protection against I/R-related organ injury and to clarify whether PDTC may be a useful therapeutic agent during particular operations where remote organ I/R injury occurs. IMMUNOHISTOCHEMISTRY ,CADHERINS ,TUMORS ,GENETIC mutation ,CELL adhesion molecules ,GENE expression - Abstract
Background: β-catenin gene mutations have been reported in vast majority of pilomatrixomas (PMXs). β-catenin, a component of the adhesion molecules of the cytoskeleton, is degraded at the cytoplasm. Excess cytoplasmic β-catenin enters into the nucleus and activates the transcription of several genes encoding c-myc, cyclin D1 and others. Sublocation of β-catenin has been demonstrated by immunohistochemistry. The aim of this study was to determine the role of β-catenin-related proteins in various benign trichogenic tumors. Methods: We investigated the expression of β-catenin, E-cadherin, c-myc and cyclin D1 immunohistochemically, and the expression of these molecules were compared between two groups consisting of 12 PMXs and 12 other benign trichogenic tumors (OBTTs). Results: In PMX group, nuclear and/or cytoplasmic expression of β-catenin was associated with a loss of membranous expression of E-cadherin (p = 0.002). In OBTT group, a membranous expression of E-cadherin and β-catenin was observed, and there was a stronger nuclear immunoreactivity of cyclin D1 compared with PMX group (p = 0.006). Conclusions: In PMX, nuclear and/or cytoplasmic β-catenin expression of tumoral cells is not related with β-catenin-related gene expressions (c-myc or cyclin D1). The molecular behaviour of OBTTs is clearly different from that of PMXs in terms of to E-cadherin and β-catenin expression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Pleurodesis is a frequently preferred procedure in thoracic surgery, and many factors may affect the process. We aimed to determine whether the administration of systemic diclofenac sodium diminishes the effectiveness of the pleurodesis induced by intrapleural tetracycline in rabbits.Twelve male New Zealand rabbits that received tetracycline 35 mg/kg intrapleurally were allocated into two groups. The first group (diclofenac group, n = 6) received 2 mg/kg diclofenac sodium intramuscularly for 10 days, and the second group (control group, n = 6) received acetaminophen 30 mg/kg orally for 10 days after the pleurodesis procedure. The rabbits were sacrificed after 28 days, and the pleural spaces were assessed grossly for evidence of pleurodesis and microscopically for evidence of fibrosis, inflammation, and collagenization. The mean macroscopic pleurodesis score of the diclofenac group was 2.16 ± 0.40 compared with 2.83 ± 0.40 in the control group (p = .027). The mean microscopic pleurodesis score of the diclofenac group was 2. 3 ± 1.03, whereas it was 3.5 ± 0.54 in the control group (p = .045).The administration of diclofenac sodium for 10 days following tetracycline pleurodesis reduces the effectiveness of pleurodesis in rabbits. The article focuses on the prenatal diagnosis of the Trisomy 13 disease. Trisomy 13 is the most severe of the autosomal trisomies. Common features of trisomy 13 include holoprosencephaly with mid-facial defects. Holoprosencephaly arises from incomplete cleavage of the embryonic forebrain. Cytogenetic abnormalities comprise some 24% to 41% cases of holoprosencephaly. Because the prognosis of the syndrome is very poor, early prenatal diagnosis is important. In the past, only a cytogenetic diagnosis from cultured amniocytes or fetal blood samples was performed on the basis of maternal age and maternal serum screening.

Background Several systemic factors, including jaundice, long-term corticosteroid therapy, diabetes and malnutrition, increase the risk of anastomotic dehiscence. The local application of molgramostim (recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor) has been reported to improve impaired dermal wound healing. Since jaundice, one of the systemic risk factors for anastomotic dehiscence, causes significant impairment of anastomotic healing, we hypothesized that locally injected molgramostim could improve the healing of bowel anastomoses in bile-duct-ligated rats used as an experimental model for jaundice. Methods Eighty-six Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into 4 groups of 20-22 animals each as follows: group 1 - colonic anastomosis only; group 2 - laparotomy followed 7 days later by colonic anastomosis; group 3 - common-bile-duct ligation (CBDL) followed 7 days later by colonic anastomosis (control group); group 4 - CBDL followed by colonic anastomosis with locally applied molgramostim. Laparotomy was performed under anesthesia in group 2 rats. In groups 3 and 4, laparotomy was followed by ligation and dissection of the common bile duct. After 7 days, colonic anastomosis was performed; in group 4 rats, molgramostim (50 μg) was injected into the perianastomotic area. On postoperative day 3, rats were killed, and the bursting pressures and hydroxyproline levels measured. Two rats from each group were selected for histopathological examination. Results The mean bursting pressure in group 4 was significantly higher than that in group 3 (37.8 v. 30.5 mm Hg [p < 0.01]). The mean hydroxyproline level in group 3 was significantly lower than that of the other groups (2.7 v. 3.1-3.5 mg/g tissue [p < 0.01]). On histopathological examination, specimens from group 4 rats showed an increased mononuclear cell population and a smaller gap on the anastomotic line than those from group 3. Conclusion The local injection of molgramostim improves healing of the impaired wound in rats subjected to CBDL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lung carcinosarcoma is an infrequently biphasic tumor composed of carcinomatous and sarcomatous components. It is divided into endobronchial (squamous-type) and peripheral (glandular type) categories. The carcinomatous component is usually a squamous carcinoma, and the sarcomatous component usually resembles a fibrosarcoma or a malignant fibrous histiocytoma. The presence of rhabdomyoblastic differentiation in such neoplasms is exceedingly rare. There are strong associations with smoking and asbestosis. In this study, we describe a unique case of a 43-year-old man with a 75 packet/year smoking history in whom a rare mixed malignant tumor of the lung was diagnosed and treated by left pneumonectomy. Histological examination of the resected specimen showed squamous cell carcinoma and rhabdomyosarcoma components. Although rare, the association of a sarcomatoid carcinoma of the lung with squamous cell carcinoma and rhabdomyosarcomatous component is possible and should be kept in mind when dealing with these unusual tumors. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the presence of oncogenic high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HR-HPV) in tonsil tissues with an in situ hybridization (ISH) technique and identify the prevalence of oropharyngeal HR-HPV in healthy individuals. Methods: The study was planned as a retrospective cross-sectional study. Cases of adult patients who had undergone a tonsillectomy procedure in our hospital in the years 2014-2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients who had tonsillectomy due to malignancy were excluded from the study. Two-hundred-and-twenty patients who were randomly selected based on age and gender were included in the study. Tonsil tissues of the included cases were reexamined by the pathology department and the presence of HPV in tonsil tissues was investigated with the ISH technique using a HR-HPV probe. Results: The prevalence of oropharyngeal HR-HPV was 6.8% (n=15) among the 220 patients included in the study, (154 [70%] were male; 66 [30%] were female with an age range from 17 to 66 years). Of the patients identified with HR-HPV, 13 (86.6%) were male and 2 (13.4%) were female and their mean age was 30.83±8.37 years. Prevalence rates were found 8.4% among male patients and 3% among female patients; while these rates were found 9.35% in patients aged less than 40 years and 2.46% in patients aged over 40 years. Conclusion: In our study, the prevalence of oncogenic HR-HPV in our region was found as 6.8%. Further, prevalence rates were found higher in young people and in males. This study, to the best of our knowledge, is the first study conducted in Turkey to determine the prevalence of oropharyngeal HR-HPV, but multicenter epidemiologic studies with larger series are needed on this subject. DESMOID tumors ,BREAST cancer treatment - Abstract
Desmoid tumors are rarely observed tumors that develop from deep muscle and aponeurotic tissues. They are histologically intermediate, and exhibit a local aggressive course. These tumors have been observed in the abdominal region, and are rarely encountered in the thoracic wall. The most effective treatment appears to be surgery. A 59-year-old female patient was admitted with the complaint of right breast pain and a palpable mass. The patient had undergone a modified radical mastectomy surgical procedure of the right breast due to invasive breast carcinoma 10 years before. A mass with a soft tissue density and a size of 44x22 mm was detected in the thoracic computed tomography of the patient, which subsequently resulted in biopsy followed by surgery. As a result of the pathological examination of the mass, the diagnosis was determined as desmoid tumor. Due to the closeness of the tumor to the surgical margin, the patient was administered radiotherapy and maintenance imatinib treatment was started. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
