This study uses a campus scholarly networking and expertise system to examine trends in coauthorship in order to measure the prevalence of deep collaboration and readiness for team research. Bibliometric analysis of publishing patterns in four departments in the humanities shows significant differences in the rate of coauthorship by type of publication, by department, and by career phase. The data also show that coauthored research has become more common over time. There is notable variation in collaborative practices between departments. This finding suggests that a more granular approach may be needed to incorporate humanities perspectives in team research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Collaboration is a necessity in the current library environment where time, money, and resources are limited. This is particularly noticeable for institutions housing federal government documents. In addition to keeping up with the influx of current publications, federal depository libraries must address historical documents for which bibliographic records are not readily available. This report discusses how the United States Government Printing Office and the University of Montana Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library are working together to increase access to pre-1976 United States Forest Service publications and gray literature within the same subject area. The article discusses the importance of establishing virtual communication technologies in regional and selective depository libraries for government information outreach. It states that Live Meeting and Online Programming for All Libraries (OPAL) were web conferencing tools that provide multiple online such as broadcasting presentations and interactive project participation. The intent of the move is to allow the students to get connected on training sessions and citations in a far distance.

Purpose - The purpose of this article is to investigate government document collections to identify subject-related materials and offer suggestions for making those materials more evident to researchers. Design/methodology/approach - Using American Indian-related materials as a case study, the authors conducted a keyword and subject heading analysis of federal government publications from 1976 through 2006, quantifying the publication patterns of various agencies. The researchers used the data to gain a better understanding of the distribution of subject matter throughout the collection and to identify key series. Findings - The paper reveals that, in a traditional, Superintendent of Documents-classified, federal publications collection, materials with a common subject matter are produced by a wide variety of agencies. This dispersed production leads to disconnected pockets of relevant information, which creates more work for information seekers. Research limitations/implications - The case study analysis does not address materials produced prior to 1976 due to limited local cataloging. Future analyses could draw on catalogs with more extensive historical holdings. Practical implications - Libraries can consider several means of drawing users' attention to subject-related materials, including reclassifying collections, creating subject guides, and developing subject portals. Originality/value - The paper is useful for those working with separate government information collections who are looking for a methodical approach to identifying unexpected sources of relevant information. Government information is becoming available to citizens more quickly than ever before due to electronic dissemination via the Internet. Two projects that rapidly capture, organize, and publicize regionally relevant government information are examined: Government News for Montana and New Mexico News Plus. These news-based sites serve as tools for collection development and digital archiving, proactive reference, content alerting services, information literacy, promotion, and outreach. In this article the author discusses the significance of the study of regional depository libraries in the U.S. She states that the draft works a good job reflecting the pressures and benefits of regional depositories. She also appreciates the effort of the Government Printing Office (GPO) on its effort to emphasize on cataloging pre-1976 depository materials and developing a complete, searchable inventory for regional depositories.
