Abstract

Pindar frequently makes reference to the Aiakid hero Achilles, not least in the account in Nemean 3 of his early hunting exploits while under the tutelage of Cheiron. Careful study of this and related Pindaric passages will illustrate how Virgil employed Pindar's Achilles as one of the diverse literary models for his depiction of the Volscian warrior Camilla in the second half of his Aeneid. Björn Liljeqvist was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1975. He joined Mensa in 1991 and is currently the international chairman of that organisation. Privately, Björn lectures on advanced learning strategies to university students. A topic he's written two books on in his native country. He has a background in embedded systems engineering with a Master's degree from Chalmers University of Technology. He is married to Camilla, with whom he has one daughter. Abstract

The paper starts with the analysis of the ambiguous figure of the "20;Italic Amazon"21; Camilla in the Aeneis. Two main factors are analysed, the role of the spear in the life of this "20;armed virgin"21; and her relations with natural surroundings, especially with rivers like the Amasenus and with lakes and marshes generally. Both prove to be fateful. The second factor is also noticeable with the other armed virgin of the Aeneis, Iuturna, who emerges as an upgraded and contrasting parallel to Camilla. Iuturna virago shows similarities with another famous virago of Latin literature, the Paluda virago of Ennius, and this gives an opportunity to evoke other women of the Roman tradition in connection with rivers and marshes, a phenomenon which proves to be a suitable topic for future exanimation. Abstract

Frances Burney's third novel, Camilla: or, a Picture of Youth, was published in 1796. Fourteen years had elapsed since the appearance of her second novel Cecilia in 1782 and during that time her literary silence had been broken only once by the publication in 1793 of a charitable pamphlet entitled Brief Reflections Relative to the Emigrant French Clergy: Earnestly Submitted to the Humane Consideration of the Ladies of Great Britain. Burney's long silence is easily accounted for. Four years after the publication of Cecilia, the popular novelist had reluctantly accepted a post as Keeper of the Robes to Queen Charlotte in the court of George III. At court, as Burney described in her letters, virtually every moment of her day was occupied by her duties. She had little time for composition, and was aware that any publication undertaken by a royal servant might have caused uneasiness among her employers. Burney did manage to sketch a number of tragedies and, as she later told George III, the skeleton of Camilla was formed during her time at court. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
