Context. Low-energy (< 300 keV) protons entering the field of view of the XMM-Newton telescope scatter with the X-ray mirror surface and might reach the X-ray detectors on the focal plane. They manifest in the form of a sudden increase in the rates, usually referred to as soft proton flares. By knowing the conversion factor between the soft proton energy and the deposited charge on the detector, it is possible to derive the incoming flux and to study the environment of the Earth magnetosphere at different distances, given the wide and elliptical XMM-Newton orbit. Thanks to detailed Geant4 simulations, we were able to build specific soft proton response matrices for MOS and PN. Aims. In this second paper, we present the results of testing these matrices with real data for the first time, while also exploring the seasonal and solar activity effect on the proton environment. The selected spectra are relative to 55 simultaneous MOS and PN observations with flares raised in four different temporal windows: December-January and July-August of 2001-2002 (solar maximum) and 2019-2020 (solar minimum). Methods. We selected and extracted the flare mean spectra and count rates in the 2–11.5 keV energy range for the four epochs. After investigating the rate variations among the MOS1, MOS2, and PN instruments, we fit the X-ray spectra using XSPEC and the proton response matrices. The best-fitting parameters derived for the three instruments were compared in order to obtain the systematic errors. Results. There is no seasonal or solar activity effect on the soft proton mean count rates, but we find large discrepancies in the instrument cross-correlations across the 20 years of satellite operations. In 2001-2002, after a few years of operation, the MOS1 and MOS2 rates are similar, and about 20% with regard to the PN ones. After 20 years, PN does not present any variation in its response, while MOS1 suffers a reduction of ∼30%, in addition to the 30% loss due to the damage of two CCDs, and MOS2 is affected by an even worse degradation (70%). The main result of the spectral analysis is that the physical model representative of the proton spectra at the input of the telescope is a power law. However, a second and phenomenological component is necessary to take into account imprecision in the generation of the matrices at softer (< 5 keV) energies. This component contributes for 21% for the MOS and 5% for the PN to the total flux in the 2–5 keV energy range. Conclusions. This study, which is the first application of the soft proton response matrices to real data, shows coherent results between detectors and allows us to estimate systematic uncertainties in the measured spectra of 3% between the two MOS detectors and of 24% between MOS and PN, together with a systematic in the input flux of about a factor of two. They are all likely due to uncertainties in the proton transmission models, with the presence of additional passive material in front of the front-illuminated MOS, and element deposition on its electrode structure across the mission life. They are observed in the form of a sudden increase in the background level, the so-called soft proton flares, affecting up to 40% of the mission observing time. Soft protons can hardly be disentangled from true X-ray events and cannot be rejected on board. Aims. All future high throughput grazing incidence X-ray telescopes operating outside the radiation belts are potentially affected by soft proton-induced contamination that must be foreseen and limited since the design phase. In-flight XMM-Newton's observations of soft protons represent a unique laboratory to validate and improve our understanding of their interaction with the mirror, optical filters, and X-ray instruments. At the same time, such models would link the observed background flares to the primary proton population encountered by the telescope, converting XMM-Newton into a monitor for soft protons. Methods. We built a Geant4 simulation of XMM-Newton, including a verified mass model of the X-ray mirror, the focal plane assembly, and the EPIC MOS and pn-CCDs. Analytical computations and, when available, laboratory measurements collected from literature were used to verify the correct modelling of the proton scattering and transmission to the detection plane. Similarly to the instrument X-ray response, we encoded the energy redistribution and proton transmission efficiency into a redistribution matrix file (RMF), mapping the probability that a proton from 2 to 300 keV is detected in a certain detector channel, and an auxiliary response file (ARF), storing the grasp towards protons. Both files were formatted according to the standard NASA calibration database and any compliant X-ray data analysis tool can be used to simulate or analyse soft proton-induced background spectra. An overall systematic uncertainty of 30% was assumed on the basis of the estimated accuracy of the mirror geometry and transmission models. Results. For the validation, three averaged soft proton spectra, one for each filter configuration, were extracted from a collection of 13 years of MOS observations of the focused non X-ray background and analysed with Xspec. A similar power-law distribution is found for the three filter configurations, plus black-body-like emission below tens of keV used as a correction factor, based on the dedicated spectral analysis of 55 in-flight proton flares presented in Paper II. The best-fit model is in agreement with the power-law distribution predicted from independent measurements for the XMM-Newton orbit, spent mostly in the magnetosheath and nearby regions. For the first time we are able to link detected soft proton flares with the proton radiation environment in the Earth's magnetosphere, while proving the validity of the simulation chain in predicting the background of future missions. Benefiting from this work and contributions from the Athena instrument consortia, we also present the response files for the Athena mission and updated estimates for its focused charged background. The energy released by active galactic nuclei (AGN) has the potential to heat or remove the gas of the ISM, thus likely impacting the cold molecular gas reservoir of host galaxies at first, with star formation following as a consequence on longer timescales. Previous works on high-z galaxies, which compared the gas content of those without identified AGN, have yielded conflicting results, possibly due to selection biases and other systematics. To provide a reliable benchmark for galaxy evolution models at cosmic noon (z = 1 − 3), two surveys were conceived: SUPER and KASHz, both targeting unbiased X-ray-selected AGN at z > 1 that span a wide bolometric luminosity range. In this paper we assess the effects of AGN feedback on the molecular gas content of host galaxies in a statistically robust, uniformly selected, coherently analyzed sample of AGN at z = 1 − 2.6, drawn from the KASHz and SUPER surveys. By using targeted and archival ALMA data in combination with dedicated SED modeling, we retrieve CO and far-infrared (FIR) luminosity as well as M* of SUPER and KASHz host galaxies. We selected non-active galaxies from PHIBBS, ASPECS, and multiple ALMA/NOEMA surveys of submillimeter galaxies in the COSMOS, UDS, and ECDF fields. By matching the samples in redshift, stellar mass, and FIR luminosity, we compared the properties of AGN and non-active galaxies within a Bayesian framework. We find that AGN hosts at given FIR luminosity are on average CO depleted compared to non-active galaxies, thus confirming what was previously found in the SUPER survey. Moreover, the molecular gas fraction distributions of AGN and non-active galaxies are statistically different, with the distribution of AGN being skewed to lower values. Our results indicate that AGN can indeed reduce the total cold molecular gas reservoir of their host galaxies. Lastly, by comparing our results with predictions from three cosmological simulations (TNG, Eagle, and Simba) filtered to match the properties of observed AGN, AGN hosts, and non-active galaxies, we confirm already known discrepancies and highlight new discrepancies between observations and simulations. The Type 1 active galactic nucleus (AGN) ESO 511-G030, a formerly bright and soft excess dominated source, was observed in 2019 in the context of a multi-wavelength monitoring campaign. In the new exposures, the source was found to be in a flux state approximately ten times lower than archival exposures and without any trace of the soft excess. Interestingly, the X-ray weakening observed in the 2019 data corresponds to a comparable fading of the UV flux, suggesting a strong link between these two components. The UV-X-ray spectral energy distribution (SED) of ESO 511-G030 shows remarkable variability. We tested both phenomenological and physically motivated models on the data, finding that the overall emission spectrum of ESO 511-G030 in this extremely low flux state is due to the superposition of a power-law-like continuum (1:7) and two reflection components emerging from hot and cold matter. Both the primary X-ray continuum and relativistic reflection are produced in the inner regions close to the supermassive black hole. The prominent variability of ESO 511-G030 and the lack of a soft excess can be explained by the dramatic change in the observed accretion rate, which dropped from an L=LEdd of 2% in 2007 to one of 0.2% in 2019. The X-ray photon index also became harder during the low flux observations from 2019, perhaps as a result of a photon starved X-ray corona. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the quadruply lensed z  =  1.51 quasar HS 0810+2554 which provide useful insight on the kinematics and morphology of the CO molecular gas and the ∼ 2 mm-continuum emission in the quasar host galaxy. Lens modelling of the mm-continuum and the spectrally integrated CO(J = 3→2) images indicates that the source of the mm-continuum has an eccentricity of e  ∼ 0.9 with a size of ∼1.6 kpc and the source of line emission has an eccentricity of e  ∼ 0.7 with a size of ∼1 kpc. The spatially integrated emission of the CO(J = 2→1) and CO(J = 3→2) lines shows a triple peak structure with the outer peaks separated by Δ v 21 = 220 ± 19 km s−1 and Δ v 32 = 245 ± 28 km s−1, respectively, suggesting the presence of rotating molecular CO line emitting gas. Lensing inversion of the high spatial resolution images confirms the presence of rotation of the line emitting gas. Assuming a conversion factor of αCO = 0.8 M⊙ (K km s−1 pc2)−1 we find the molecular gas mass of HS 0810+2554 to be M Mol = (5.2 ± 1.5)/μ32 × 1010 M⊙, where μ32 is the magnification of the CO(J = 3→2) emission. We report the possible detection, at the 3.0–4.7σ confidence level, of shifted CO(J = 3→2) emission lines of high-velocity clumps of CO emission with velocities up to 1702 km s−1. We find that the momentum boost of the large-scale molecular wind is below the value predicted for an energy-conserving outflow given the momentum flux observed in the small-scale ultrafast outflow. It is widely believed that the primary X-ray emission of AGN is due to the Comptonization of optical-UV photons from a hot electron corona, while the origin of the 'soft-excess' is still uncertain and matter of debate. A second Comptonization component, called warm corona, was therefore proposed to account for the soft-excess, and found in agreement with the optical-UV to X-ray emission of a sample of Seyfert galaxies. In this context, we exploit the broad-band XMM–Newton and NuSTAR simultaneous observations of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4593 to further test the so-called 'two corona model'. The NGC 4593 spectra are well reproduced by the model, from the optical/UV to the hard X-rays. Moreover, the data reveal a significant correlation between the hot and the warm corona parameters during our monitoring campaign. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims. To understand the nature of transient obscuring outflows in active galactic nuclei, we use simultaneous multiwavelength observations with XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and the Max Planck Gesellschaft/European Southern Observatory (ESO) 2.2 m telescope triggered by soft X-ray absorption detected by Swift. Methods. We obtained ultraviolet spectra on 2016-12-12 and 2016-12-21 using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on HST simultaneously with X-ray spectra obtained with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR. We modeled the ultraviolet spectra to measure the strength and variability of the absorption, and used photoionization models to obtain its physical characteristics. Results. We find new components of broad, blue-shifted absorption associated with Lyα, N V, Si IV, and C IV in our COS spectra. The absorption extends from near-zero velocities in the rest-frame of the host galaxy to −6200 km s−1. These features appear for the first time in NGC 3783 at the same time as heavy soft X-ray absorption seen in the XMM-Newton X-ray spectra. The X-ray absorption has a column density of ∼1023 cm−2, and it partially covers the X-ray continuum source. Combining the X-ray column densities with the UV spectral observations yields an ionization parameter for the obscuring gas of log ξ = 1.84−0.2+0.4 erg cm s−1 log   ξ = 1. 84 − 0.2 + 0.4 erg   cm   s − 1 $ \log \xi = 1.84_{ - 0.2}^{ + 0.4}{\rm{erg}}\,{\rm{cm}}\,{{\rm{s}}^{ - 1}}\ $. Despite the high intensity of the UV continuum in NGC 3783, F(1470 Å) = 8 × 10−14 erg cm−2 s−1 Å−1>, the well known narrow UV absorption lines are deeper than in earlier observations in unobscured states, and low ionization states such as C III appear, indicating that the narrow-line gas is more distant from the nucleus and is being shadowed by the gas producing the obscuration. Despite the high continuum flux levels in our observations of NGC 3783, moderate velocities in the UV broad line profiles have substantially diminished. The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) of the Advanced Telescope for High-ENergy Astrophysics (Athena) large-scale mission of ESA will provide spatially resolved high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy from 0.2 to 12 keV, with 5″ pixels over a field of view of 5 arc minute equivalent diameter and a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (FWHM) up to 7 keV. The core scientific objectives of Athena drive the main performance parameters of the X-IFU. The X-ray spectra of many active galactic nuclei (AGNs) show a soft X-ray excess below 1-2 keV on top of the extrapolated highenergy power law. The origin of this component is uncertain. It could be a signature of relativistically blurred, ionized reflection or the high-energy tail of thermal Comptonization in a warm (kT ∼ 1 keV), optically thick ( ɣ' 10-20) corona producing the optical/UV to soft X-ray emission. The purpose of the present paper is to test the warm corona model on a statistically significant sample of unabsorbed, radio-quiet AGNs with XMM-Newton archival data, providing simultaneous optical/UV and X-ray coverage. The sample has 22 objects and 100 observations. We use two thermal Comptonization components to fit the broadband spectra, one for the warm corona emission and one for the high-energy continuum. In the optical/UV, we also include the reddening, the small blue bump, and the Galactic extinction. In the X-rays, we include a warm absorber and a neutral reflection. The model gives a good fit (reduced ϰ2 < 1:5) to more than 90% of the sample.We find the temperature of the warm corona to be uniformly distributed in the 0.1-1 keV range, while the optical depth is in the range ∼10-40. These values are consistent with a warm corona covering a large fraction of a quasi-passive accretion disk, i.e., that mostly reprocesses the warm corona emission. The disk intrinsic emission represents no more than 20% of the disk total emission. According to this interpretation, most of the accretion power would be released in the upper layers of the accretion flow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim. Ultra-fast outflows (UFO) appear to be common in local active galactic nuclei (AGN) and may be powerful enough (Ėkin ≥ 1% of Lbol) to effectively quench the star formation in their host galaxies. To test feedback models based on AGN outflows, it is mandatory to investigate UFOs near the peak of AGN activity, that is, at high-z where only a few studies are available to date. Methods. UFOs produce Fe resonant absorption lines measured above ≈7 keV. The most critical problem in detecting such features in distant objects is the difficulty in obtaining X-ray data with sufficient signal-to-noise. We therefore selected a distant QSO that gravitational lensing made bright enough for these purposes, the z = 2.64 QSO MG J0414+0534, and observed it with XMM-Newton for ≈78 ks. Results. The X-ray spectrum of MG J0414+0534 is complex and shows signatures of cold absorption (NH ≈ 4 × 1022 cm−2) and of the presence of an iron emission line (E ≈ 6.4 keV, EW = 95 ± 53 eV) consistent with it originating in the cold absorber. Our main result, however, is the robust detection (more than 5σ) of an absorption line at Eint ≈ 9.2 keV (Eobs ≈ 2.5 keV observer frame). If interpreted as due to FeXXVI, it implies gas outflowing at vout ≈ 0.3c. To our knowledge, this is the first detection of an UFO in a radio-loud quasar at z ≥ 1.5. We estimated that the UFO mechanical output is Ėkin ≈ 2.5Lbol with ṗout∕ṗrad ≈ 17 indicating that it is capable of installing significant feedback between the super-massive black hole and the bulge of the host galaxy. We report on the NuSTAR observations of two bright Seyfert 1 galaxies, namely MCG +8-11- 11 (100 ks) and NGC 6814 (150 ks). The main goal of these observations was to investigate the Comptonization mechanisms acting in the innermost regions of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) which are believed to be responsible for the UV/X-ray emission. The spectroscopic analysis of the NuSTAR spectra of these two sources revealed that although they had different properties overall (black hole masses, luminosity and Eddington ratios), they had very similar coronal properties. Both presented a power-law spectrum with a high-energy cut-off at ~150-200 keV, a relativistically broadened Fe Kα line and the associated disc reflection component, plus a narrow iron line likely emitted in Compton thin and distant matter. The intrinsic continuum was well described by Comptonization models that show for MCG +8-11-11 a temperature of the coronal plasma of kTe ~ 60 keV and an extrapolated optical depth τ = 1.8; for NGC 6814, the coronal temperature was kTe ~ 45 keV with an extrapolated optical depth of τ = 2.5. We compare and discuss these values to some most common Comptonization models that aim at explaining the energy production and stability of coronae in AGNs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the ionic column density variability of the ionized outflows associated with NGC∼7469, to estimate their location and power. This could allow a better understanding of galactic feedback of AGNs to their host galaxies. Analysis of seven XMM-Newton grating observations from 2015 is reported. We use an individual-ion spectral fitting approach, and compare different epochs to accurately determine variability on time-scales of years, months, and days. We find no significant column density variability in a 10 year period implying that the outflow is far from the ionizing source. The implied lower bound on the ionization equilibrium time, 10 years, constrains the lower limit on the distance to be at least 12 pc, and up to 31 pc, much less but consistent with the 1 kpc wide starburst ring. The ionization distribution of column density is reconstructed from measured column densities, nicely matching results of two 2004 observations, with one large high ionization parameter (ξ) component at 2

In 2016 we carried out a Swift monitoring programme to track the X-ray hardness variability of eight type-I AGN over a year. The purpose of this monitoring was to find intense obscuration events in AGN, and thereby study them by triggering joint XMMNewton, NuSTAR, and HST observations. We successfully accomplished this for NGC 3783 in December 2016. We found heavy X-ray absorption produced by an obscuring outflow in this AGN. As a result of this obscuration, interesting absorption features appear in the UV and X-ray spectra, which are not present in the previous epochs. Namely, the obscuration produces broad and blueshifted UV absorption lines of Lyα, Civ, and N v, together with a new high-ionisation component producing Fe xxv and Fe xxvi absorption lines. In soft X-rays, only narrow emission lines stand out above the diminished continuum as they are not absorbed by the obscurer. Our analysis shows that the obscurer partially covers the central source with a column density of few 1023 cm−2, outflowing with a velocity of few thousand km s−1. The obscuration in NGC 3783 is variable and lasts for about a month. Unlike the commonly seen warm-absorber winds at pc-scale distances from the black hole, the eclipsing wind in NGC 3783 is located at about 10 light days. Our results suggest that the obscuration is produced by an inhomogeneous and clumpy medium, consistent with clouds in the base of a radiatively driven disk wind at the outer broad-line region of the AGN. We present results from a joint XMM–Newton/NuSTAR monitoring of the Seyfert 1 NGC 4593, consisting of 5 × 20 ks simultaneous observations spaced by 2 d, performed in 2015 January. The source is variable, both in flux and spectral shape, on time-scales down to a few ks and with a clear softer-when-brighter behaviour. In agreement with past observations, we find the presence of a warm absorber well described by a two-phase ionized outflow. The source exhibits a cold, narrow and constant Fe Kα line at 6.4 keV, and a broad component is also detected. The broad-band (0.3–79 keV) spectrum is well described by a primary power law with Γ ≃ 1.6–1.8 and an exponential cut-off varying from 90+40−20 to >700 keV, two distinct reflection components, and a variable soft excess correlated with the primary power law. This campaign shows that probing the variability of Seyfert 1 galaxies on different time-scales is of prime importance to investigate the high-energy emission of active galactic nuclei. PG1247+267 is one of the most luminous known quasars at z ∼ 2 and is a strongly super-Eddington accreting supermassive black hole (SMBH) candidate. We obtained NuSTAR data of this intriguing source in December 2014 with the aim of studying its high-energy emission, leveraging the broad band covered by the new NuSTAR and the archival XMM-Newton data. Several measurements are in agreement with the super-Eddington scenario for PG1247+267: the soft power law (Γ = 2.3 ± 0.1); the weak ionized Fe emission line; and a hint of the presence of out-flowing ionized gas surrounding the SMBH. The presence of an extreme reflection component is instead at odds with the high accretion rate proposed for this quasar. This can be explained with three different scenarios; all of them are in good agreement with the existing data, but imply very different conclusions: i) a variable primary power law observed in a low state, superimposed on a reflection component echoing a past, higher flux state; ii) a power law continuum obscured by an ionized, Compton thick, partial covering absorber; and iii) a relativistic disk reflector in a lamp-post geometry, with low coronal height and high BH spin. The first model is able to explain the high reflection component in terms of variability. The second does not require any reflection to reproduce the hard emission, while a rather low high-energy cutoff of ∼100 keV is detected for the first time in such a high redshift source. The third model require a face-on geometry, which may affect the SMBH mass and Eddington ratio measurements. Deeper X-ray broad-band data are required in order to distinguish between these possibilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We discuss preliminary results from a joint XMM- Newton and NuSTAR monitoring program on the active galactic nucleus NGC 4593, consisting of 5×20 ks observations, spaced by two days, performed in January 2015. The source is found to be variable, both in flux and spectral shape, on time scales as short as a few ks. The spectrum clearly softens when the source brightens. Context. Our consortium performed an extensive multi-wavelength campaign of the nearby Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC5548 in 2013-14. The source appeared unusually heavily absorbed in the soft X-rays, and signatures of outflowing absorption were also present in the UV. He-like triplets of neon, oxygen and nitrogen, and radiative recombination continuum (RRC) features were found to dominate the soft X-ray spectrum due to the low continuum flux. Aims. Here we focus on characterising these narrow emission features using data obtained from the XMM-Newton RGS (770 ks stacked spectrum). Methods. We use spex for our initial analysis of these features. Self-consistent photoionisation models from Cloudy are then compared with the data to characterise the physical conditions of the emitting region. Results. Outflow velocity discrepancies within the O VII triplet lines can be explained if the X-ray narrow-line region (NLR) in NGC5548 is absorbed by at least one of the six warm absorber components found by previous analyses. The RRCs allow us to directly calculate a temperature of the emitting gas of a few eV (~104 K), favouring photoionised conditions. We fit the data with a Cloudy model of log ξ = 1.45 ± 0.05 erg cm s-1, log NH = 22.9 ± 0.4 cm-2 and log vturb = 2.25 ± 0.5 km s-1 for the emitting gas; this is the first time the X-ray NLR gas in this source has been modelled so comprehensively. This allows us to estimate the distance from the central source to the illuminated face of the emitting clouds as 13.9 ± 0.6 pc, consistent with previous work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ongoing studies with XMM-Newton have shown that powerful accretion disc winds, as revealed through highly ionized Fe K-shell absorption at E = 6.7 keV, are present in a significant fraction of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the local Universe (Tombesi et al. 2010a). In Gofford et al., we analysed a sample of 51 Suzaku-observed AGNs and independently detected Fe K absorption in ~40 per cent of the sample, and we measured the properties of the absorbing gas. In this work, we build upon these results to consider the properties of the associated wind. On average, the fast winds (vw > 0.01c) are located ~ 1015-18 cm (typically ~102-4 rs) from their black hole, their mass outflow rates are of the order of w>~0.01-1 M⊙ yr-1 or ~(0.01-1)MEdd and kinetic power is constrained to w> ~ 1043-45 erg s-1, equivalent to ~(0.1-10 per cent)LEdd. We find a fundamental correlation between the source bolometric luminosity and the wind velocity, with vw∝Lbolα and α=0.4-0.2+0.3 (90 per cent confidence), which indicates that more luminous AGN tend to harbour faster Fe K winds. The mass outflow rate Mw, kinetic power Lw and momentum flux pw of the winds are also consequently correlated with Lbol, such that more massive and more energetic winds are present in more luminous AGN. We investigate these properties in the framework of a continuum-driven wind, showing that the observed relationships are broadly consistent with a wind being accelerated by continuum-scattering. We find that, globally, a significant fraction (~85 per cent) of the sample can plausibly exceed the Lw/Lbol ~ 0.5 per cent threshold thought necessary for feedback, while 45 per cent may also exceed the less conservative ~5 per cent of Lbol threshold as well. During an extensive multiwavelength campaign that we performed in 2013-2014, we found the prototypical Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 in an unusual condition of heavy and persistent obscuration. The newly discovered "obscurer" absorbs most of the soft X-ray continuum along our line of sight and lowers the ionizing luminosity received by the classical warm absorber. We present the analysis of the high resolution X-ray spectra collected with XMM-Newton and Chandra throughout the campaign, which are suitable to investigate the variability of both the obscurer and classical warm absorber. The time separation between these X-ray observations range from two days to eight months. On these timescales the obscurer is variable both in column density and in covering fraction. This is consistent with the picture of a patchy wind. The most significant variation occurred in September 2013 when the source brightened for two weeks. A higher and steeper intrinsic continuum and a lower obscurer covering fraction are both required to explain the spectral shape during the flare.We suggest that a geometrical change of the soft X-ray source behind the obscurer causes the observed drop in the covering fraction. Because of the higher soft X-ray continuum level, the September 2013 Chandra spectrum is the only X ray spectrum of the campaign in which individual features of the warm absorber could be detected. The spectrum shows absorption from Fe-UTA, Oiv, and Ov, consistent with belonging to the lower-ionization counterpart of the historical NGC 5548 warm absorber. We describe the analysis of the seven broad-band X-ray continuum observations of the archetypal Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 that were obtained with XMM-Newton or Chandra, simultaneously with high-energy (>10 keV) observations with NuSTAR and INTEGRAL. These data were obtained as part of a multiwavelength campaign undertaken from the summer of 2013 till early 2014. We find evidence of a high-energy cut-o in at least one observation, which we attribute to thermal Comptonization, and a constant reflected component that is likely due to neutral material at least a few light months away from the continuum source. We confirm the presence of strong, partial covering X-ray absorption as the explanation for the sharp decrease in flux through the soft X-ray band. The obscurers appear to be variable in column density and covering fraction on time scales as short as weeks. A fit of the average spectrum over the range 0.3-400 keV with a realistic Comptonization model indicates the presence of a hot corona with a temperature of 40+40 -10 keV and an optical depth of 2:7-1:2+0:7 if a spherical geometry is assumed. Context. AGN outflows are thought to influence the evolution of their host galaxies and of super massive black holes. Our deep multiwavelength campaign on NGC 5548 has revealed a new, unusually strong X-ray obscuration, accompanied by broad UV absorption troughs observed for the first time in this object. The X-ray obscuration caused a dramatic decrease in the incident ionizing flux on the outflow that produces the long-studied narrow UV absorption lines in this AGN. The resulting data allowed us to construct a comprehensive physical, spatial, and temporal picture for this enduring AGN wind. Aims. We aim to determine the distance of the narrow UV outflow components from the central source, their total column-density, and the mechanism responsible for their observed absorption variability. Methods. We study the UV spectra acquired during the campaign, as well as from four previous epochs (1998-2011). Our main analysis tools are ionic column-density extraction techniques, photoionization models based on the code CLOUDY, and collisional excitation simulations. Results. A simple model based on a fixed total column-density absorber, reacting to changes in ionizing illumination, matches the very different ionization states seen in five spectroscopic epochs spanning 16 years. The main component of the enduring outflow is situated at 3.5 ± 1.1 pc from the central source, and its distance and number density are similar to those of the narrow-emitting-line region in this object. Three other components are situated between 5-70 pc and two are farther than 100 pc. The wealth of observational constraints and the anti-correlation between the observed X-ray and UV flux in the 2002 and 2013 epochs make our physical model a leading contender for interpreting trough variability data of quasar outflows. This campaign, in combination with prior UV and X-ray data, yields the first simple model that can explain the physical characteristics and the substantial variability observed in an AGN outflow. An extensive multi-satellite campaign on NGC 5548 has revealed this archetypal Seyfert-1 galaxy to be in an exceptional state of persistent heavy absorption. Our observations taken in 2013-2014 with XMM-Newton, Swift, NuSTAR, INTEGRAL, Chandra, HST and two ground-based observatories have together enabled us to establish that this unexpected phenomenon is caused by an outflowing stream of weakly ionised gas (called the obscurer), extending from the vicinity of the accretion disk to the broad-line region. In this work we present the details of our campaign and the data obtained by all the observatories. We determine the spectral energy distribution of NGC 5548 from near-infrared to hard X-rays by establishing the contribution of various emission and absorption processes taking place along our line of sight towards the central engine. We thus uncover the intrinsic emission and produce a broadband continuum model for both obscured (average summer 2013 data) and unobscured (<2011) epochs of NGC 5548. Our results suggest that the intrinsic NIR/optical/UV continuum is a single Comptonised component with its higher energy tail creating the "soft X-ray excess". This component is compatible with emission from a warm, optically-thick corona as part of the inner accretion disk. We then investigate the effects of the continuum on the ionisation balance and thermal stability of photoionised gas for unobscured and obscured epochs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent X-ray observations show absorbing winds with velocities up to mildly relativistic values of the order of ∼0.1c in a limited sample of six broad-line radio galaxies. They are observed as blueshifted Fe xxv–xxvi K-shell absorption lines, similarly to the ultrafast outflows (UFOs) reported in Seyferts and quasars. In this work we extend the search for such Fe K absorption lines to a larger sample of 26 radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) observed with XMM–Newton and Suzaku. The sample is drawn from the Swift Burst Alert Telescope 58-month catalogue and blazars are excluded. X-ray bright Fanaroff–Riley Class II radio galaxies constitute the majority of the sources. Combining the results of this analysis with those in the literature we find that UFOs are detected in >27 per cent of the sources. However, correcting for the number of spectra with insufficient signal-to-noise ratio, we can estimate that the incidence of UFOs is this sample of radio-loud AGN is likely in the range f ≃ (50 ± 20) per cent. A photoionization modelling of the absorption lines with xstar allows us to estimate the distribution of their main parameters. The observed outflow velocities are broadly distributed between vout ≲ 1000 km s−1 and vout ≃ 0.4c, with mean and median values of vout ≃ 0.133c and vout ≃ 0.117c, respectively. The material is highly ionized, with an average ionization parameter of logξ ≃ 4.5 erg s−1 cm, and the column densities are larger than NH > 1022 cm−2. Overall, these characteristics are consistent with the presence of complex accretion disc winds in a significant fraction of radio-loud AGN and demonstrate that the presence of relativistic jets does not preclude the existence of winds, in accordance with several theoretical models. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are the most luminous persistent objects in the universe. The X-ray domain is particularly important because the X-ray flux represents a significant fraction of the bolometric emission from such objects and probes the innermost regions of accretion disks, where most of this power is generated. An excess of X-ray emission below ~2 keV, called soft-excess, is very common in Type 1 AGN spectra. The origin of this feature remains debated. Originally modeled with a blackbody, there are now several possibilities to model the soft-excess, including warm Comptonization and blurred ionized reflection. In this paper, we test ionized-reflection models on Mrk 509, a bright Seyfert 1 galaxy for which we have a unique data set, in order to determine whether it can be responsible for the strong soft-excess. We use ten simultaneous XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL observations performed every four days. We present here the results of the spectral analysis, the evolution of the parameters, and the variability properties of the X-ray emission. The application of blurred ionized-reflection models leads to a very strong reflection and an extreme geometry, but fails to reproduce the broad-band spectrum of Mrk 509. Two different scenarios for blurred ionized reflection are discussed: stable geometry and lamp-post configuration. In both cases we find that the model parameters do not follow the expected relations, indicating that the model is fine-tuned to fit the data without physical justification. A large, slow variation in the soft-excess without a counterpart in the hard X-rays could be explained by a change in ionization of the reflector. However, such a change does not naturally follow from the assumed geometrical configuration. Warm Comptonization remains the most probable origin of the soft-excess in this object. Nevertheless, it is possible that both ionized reflection and warm Comptonization mechanisms can explain the soft-excess in all objects, one dominating the other one, depending on the physical conditions of the disk and the corona. We present results from an observation of the gravitationally lensed z = 1.51 narrow absorption line (NAL) active galactic nucleus (AGN) HS 0810+2554 performed with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. The factor of ∼100 lensing magnification of HS 0810+2554 makes this source exceptionally bright. Absorption lines are detected at rest-frame energies of ∼7.7 keV and ∼11.0 keV at ≳97% significance. By interpreting these lines to arise from highly ionized iron the implied outflow velocities of the X-ray absorbing gas corresponding to these lines are 0.13c and 0.41c, respectively. The presence of these relativistic outflows and the absence of any significant low-energy X-ray absorption suggest that a shielding gas is not required for the generation of the relativistic X-ray absorbing winds in HS 0810+2554. UV spectroscopic observations with VLT/UVES indicate that the UV absorbing material is outflowing at vUV ∼0.065c. Our analysis indicates that the fraction of the total bolometric energy released by HS 0810+2554 into the intergalactic medium (IGM) in the form of kinetic energy is εk = 1.0. An efficiency of greater than unity implies that magnetic driving is likely a significant contributor to the acceleration of this X-ray absorbing wind. We also estimate the mass-outflow rate of the strongest absorption component to be = 1.1 M☼ yr–1. Assuming that the energetic outflow detected in the NAL AGN HS 0810+2554 is a common property of most AGN it would suggest that the X-ray absorbing wind may have a larger opening angle than previously thought. Context. The true nature of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULX) is still currently vigorously debated. One of the most interesting possibilities is that these sources are intermediate-mass (M ~ 103-105 M☉) black holes. The most luminous ULX (L2-10 keV ∼ 1041 erg s-1) are the most suitable candidates for being genuine intermediate-mass black holes (IMBH). Aims. XMMUJ132218.3-164247 was proposed to be the most luminous ULX known so far. For this reason a firm assessment of its intrinsic nature is needed and pursued in this work. Methods. We precisely defined the position of XMMUJ132218.3-164247 using a short Chandra pointing of the field. Then, we obtained high quality optical spectra of the source with the FORS2 instrument on the VLT to define its nature and distance. We then used unpublished data obtained with XMM-Newton to investigate its nature and emission properties in more detail. Results. Features in its optical spectrum place XMMUJ132218.3-164247 at a redshift of z ~ 1, implying that it is a background QSO instead of an ULX. We clearly detected some emission lines typical of a QSO, including OIII lines and a broad Mg II line that indicates that the source is a type I AGN. The X-ray spectrum of the source is well modeled by a simple power-law with absorption slightly in excess to the Galactic value. No emission feature at the energy of the FeKa is present in the data. Finally, the source has been detected at a X-ray flux level higher (by ~40%) than previously measured and reported in its discovery work. Conclusions. XMMUJ132218.3-164247 is not a ULX but a type I QSO. It shows a standard X-ray spectrum and exhibits a variability pattern that is typical of QSOs. We carried out a systematic analysis of time lags between X-ray energy bands in a large sample (32 sources) of unabsorbed, radio quiet active galactic nuclei (AGN), observed by XMM–Newton. The analysis of X-ray lags (up to the highest/shortest frequencies/time-scales), is performed in the Fourier-frequency domain, between energy bands where the soft excess (soft band) and the primary power law (hard band) dominate the emission. We report a total of 15 out of 32 sources displaying a high-frequency soft lag in their light curves. All 15 are at a significance level exceeding 97 per cent and 11 are at a level exceeding 99 per cent. Of these soft lags, seven have not been previously reported in the literature, thus this work significantly increases the number of known sources with a soft/negative lag. The characteristic time-scales of the soft/negative lag are relatively short (with typical frequencies and amplitudes of ν ∼ 0.07–4 × 10−3 Hz and τ ∼ 10–600 s, respectively), and show a highly significant (≳4σ) correlation with the black hole mass. The measured correlations indicate that soft lags are systematically shifted to lower frequencies and higher absolute amplitudes as the mass of the source increases. To first approximation, all the sources in the sample are consistent with having similar mass-scaled lag properties. These results strongly suggest the existence of a mass-scaling law for the soft/negative lag, that holds for AGN spanning a large range of masses (about 2.5 orders of magnitude), thus supporting the idea that soft lags originate in the innermost regions of AGN and are powerful tools for testing their physics and geometry. The existence of ionized X-ray absorbing layers of gas along the line of sight to the nuclei of Seyfert galaxies is a well established observational fact. This material is systematically outflowing and shows a large range in parameters. However, its actual nature and dynamics are still not clear. In order to gain insights into these important issues we performed a literature search for papers reporting the parameters of the soft X-ray warm absorbers (WAs) in 35 type 1 Seyferts and compared their properties to those of the ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) detected in the same sample. The fraction of sources with WAs is >60 per cent, consistent with previous studies. The fraction of sources with UFOs is >34 per cent, >67 per cent of which also show WAs. The large dynamic range obtained when considering all the absorbers together, spanning several orders of magnitude in ionization, column, velocity and distance allows us, for the first time, to investigate general relations among them. In particular, we find significant correlations indicating that the closer the absorber is to the central black hole, the higher the ionization, column, outflow velocity and consequently the mechanical power. In all the cases, the absorbers continuously populate the whole parameter space, with the WAs and the UFOs lying always at the two ends of the distribution. These evidence strongly suggest that these absorbers, often considered of different types, could actually represent parts of a single large-scale stratified outflow observed at different locations from the black hole. The UFOs are likely launched from the inner accretion disc and the WAs at larger distances, such as the outer disc and/or torus. We argue that the observed parameters and correlations are, to date, consistent with both radiation pressure through Compton scattering and magnetohydrodynamic processes contributing to the outflow acceleration, the latter playing a major role. Most of the absorbers, especially the UFOs, show a sufficiently high mechanical power (at least ∼0.5 per cent of the bolometric luminosity) to provide a significant contribution to active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback and thus to the evolution of the host galaxy. In this regard, we find possible evidence for the interaction of the AGN wind with the surrounding environment on large scales. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The origin of the different spectral components present in the high-energy (UV to X-rays/gamma-rays) spectra of Seyfert galaxies is still being debated a lot. One of the major limitations, in this respect, is the lack of really simultaneous broad-band observations that allow us to disentangle the behavior of each component and to better constrain their interconnections. The simultaneous UV to X-rays/gamma rays data obtained during the multiwavelength campaign on the bright Seyfert 1 Mrk 509 are used in this paper and tested against physically motivated broad band models. Mrk 509 was observed by XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL in October/November 2009, with one observation every four days for a total of ten observations. Each observation has been fitted with a realistic thermal Comptonization model for the continuum emission. Prompted by the correlation between the UV and soft X-ray flux, we used a thermal Comptonization component for the soft X-ray excess. We also included a warm absorber and a reflection component, as required by the precise studies previously done by our consortium. The UV to X-ray/gamma-ray emission of Mrk 509 can be well fitted by these components. The presence of a relatively hard high-energy spectrum points to the existence of a hot (kτ ∼ 100 keV), optically-thin (τ ∼ 0.5) corona producing the primary continuum. In contrast, the soft X-ray component requires a warm (kτ ∼ 1 keV), optically-thick (τ ∼ 10-20) plasma. Estimates of the amplification ratio for this warm plasma support a configuration relatively close to the "theoretical" configuration of a slab corona above a passive disk. An interesting consequence is the weak luminosity-dependence of its emission, which is a possible explanation of the roughly constant spectral shape of the soft X-ray excess seen in AGNs. The temperature (∼3 eV) and flux of the soft-photon field entering and cooling the warm plasma suggests that it covers the accretion disk down to a transition radius Rin of 10-20 Rg. This plasma could be the warm upper layer of the accretion disk. In contrast, the hot corona has a more photon-starved geometry. The high temperature (∼100 eV) of the soft-photon field entering and cooling it favors a localization of the hot corona in the inner flow. This soft-photon field could be part of the comptonized emission produced by the warm plasma. In this framework, the change in the geometry (i.e. Rin) could explain most of the observed flux and spectral variability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. We report on a detailed study of the Fe K emission/absorption complex in the nearby, bright Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509. The study is part of an extensive XMM-Newton monitoring consisting of 10 pointings (∼60 ks each) about once every 4 days, and includes a reanalysis of previous XMM-Newton and Chandra observations. Aims. We aim at understanding the origin and location of the Fe K emission and absorption regions. Methods. We combine the results of time-resolved spectral analysis on both short and long time-scales including model-independent rms spectra. Results. Mrk 509 shows a clear (EW = 58±4 eV) neutral Fe Ka emission line that can be decomposed into a narrow (σ = 0.027 keV) component (found in the Chandra HETG data) plus a resolved (σ = 0.22 keV) component.We find the first successful measurement of a linear correlation between the intensity of the resolved line component and the 3-10 keV flux variations on time scales of years down to a few days. The Fe Kα reverberates the hard X-ray continuum without any measurable lag, suggesting that the region producing the resolved Fe Kα component is located within a few light days to a week (r ≲ 103 rg) from the black hole (BH). The lack of a redshifted wing in the line poses a lower limit of ≥40 rg for its distance from the BH. The Fe Kα could thus be emitted from the inner regions of the BLR, i.e. within the ∼80 light days indicated by the Hβ line measurements. In addition to these two neutral Fe Kα components, we confirm the detection of weak (EW ∼ 8-20 eV) ionised Fe K emission. This ionised line can be modelled with either a blend of two narrow Fe xxv and Fe xxvI emission lines (possibly produced by scattering from distant material) or with a single relativistic line produced, in an ionised disc, down to a few rg from the BH. In the latter interpretation, the presence of an ionised standard a-disc, down to a few rg, is consistent with the source high Eddington ratio. Finally, we observe a weakening/disappearing of the mediumand high-velocity high-ionisation Fe K wind features found in previous XMM-Newton observations. Conclusions. This campaign has made the first reverberation measurement of the resolved component of the Fe Kα line possible, from which we can infer a location for the bulk of its emission at a distance of r ∼ 40-1000 rg from the BH. Aims. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) often show evidence of photoionized outflows. A major uncertainty in models for these outflows is the distance (R) to the gas from the central black hole. In this paper we use the HST/COS data from a massive multi-wavelength monitoring campaign on the bright Seyfert I galaxy Mrk 509, in combination with archival HST/STIS data, to constrain the location of the various kinematic components of the outflow. Methods. We compare the expected response of the photoionized gas to changes in ionizing flux with the changes measured in the data using the following steps: 1) We compare the column densities of each kinematic component measured in the 2001 STIS data with those measured in the 2009 COS data; 2) We use time-dependent photionization calculations with a set of simulated lightcurves to put statistical upper limits on the hydrogen number density (nH) that are consistent with the observed small changes in the ionic column densities; 3) From the upper limit on nH, we calculate a lower limit on the distance to the absorber from the central source via the prior determination of the ionization parameter. Our method offers two improvements on traditional timescale analysis. First, we account for the physical behavior of AGN lightcurves. Second, our analysis accounts for the quality of measurement in cases where no changes are observed in the absorption troughs. Results. The very small variations in trough ionic column densities (mostly consistent with no change) between the 2001 and 2009 epochs allow us to put statistical lower limits on R between 100–200 pc for all the major UV absorption components at a confidence level of 99%. These results are mainly consistent with the independent distance estimates derived for the warm absorbers from the simultaneous X-ray spectra. Based on the 100–200 pc lower limit for all the UV components, this absorber cannot be connected with an accretion disc wind. The outflow might have originated from the disc, but based on simple ballistic kinematics, such an event had to occur at least 300 000 years ago in the rest frame of the source. We present a detailed analysis of the X-ray emission of HS 1700+6416, a high-redshift (z = 2.7348) luminous quasar classified as a narrow absorption line (NAL) quasar on the basis of its SDSS spectrum. The source has been observed nine times by Chandra and once by XMM-Newton from 2000 to 2007. Long-term variability is clearly detected between the observations in the 2-10 keV flux, where it varies by a factor of three (∼3-9 ±10-14 erg s-1 cm-2), and in the amount of neutral absorption (NH < 1022 cm-2 in 2000 and 2002 and NH = 4.4 ±1.2 ±1022 cm-2 in 2007). Most interestingly, one broad absorption feature is clearly detected at 10.3 ±0.7 keV (rest frame) in the 2000 Chandra observation, while two similar features at 8.9 ±0.4 and at 12.5 ±0.7 keV are visible when the eight contiguous Chandra observations of 2007 are stacked together. In the XMM-Newton observation of 2002, which is strongly affected by background flares, there is a hint of a similar feature at 8.0 ±0.3 keV. We interpreted these features as absorption lines from a high-velocity highly ionized (i.e. Fe XXV, FeXXVI) outflowing gas. In this scenario, the outflow velocities inferred are in the range v = 0.12-0.59c. To reproduce the observed features, the gas must have a high column density (NH >3 ±1023 cm-2), high ionization parameter (logξ > 3.3 erg cm s-1) and a wide range of velocities (Δ V ∼ 104 km s-1). This absorption line quasar is the fourth high-z quasar that displays X-ray signatures of variable high-velocity outflows, and among these, it is the only one that is not lensed. A rough estimate of the minimum kinetic energy carried by the wind of up to 18% Lbol, based on a biconical geometry of the wind, implies that the amount of energy injected into the outflow environment is large enough to produce effective mechanical feedback. ABSTRACT Using the results of a previous X-ray photoionization modelling of blueshifted Fe K absorption lines on a sample of 42 local radio-quiet AGNs observed with XMM-Newton, in this Letter we estimate the location and energetics of the associated ultrafast outflows (UFOs). Due to significant uncertainties, we are essentially able to place only lower/upper limits. On average, their location is in the interval ∼0.0003-0.03 pc ( ∼ 102- 104 rs) from the central black hole, consistent with what is expected for accretion disc winds/outflows. The mass outflow rates are constrained between ∼0.01 and 1 M ⊙ yr −1, corresponding to > rsim5-10 per cent of the accretion rates. The average lower/upper limits on the mechanical power are log 42.6-44.6 erg s −1. However, the minimum possible value of the ratio between the mechanical power and bolometric luminosity is constrained to be comparable or higher than the minimum required by simulations of feedback induced by winds/outflows. Therefore, this work demonstrates that UFOs are indeed capable to provide a significant contribution to the AGN cosmological feedback, in agreement with theoretical expectations and the recent observation of interactions between AGN outflows and the interstellar medium in several Seyfert galaxies. Aims. More than half of all active galactic nuclei show strong photoionised outflows. A major uncertainty in models for these outflows is the distance of the gas to the central black hole. We use the results of a massive multiwavelength monitoring campaign on the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509 to constrain the location of the outflow components dominating the soft X-ray band. Methods. Mrk 509 was monitored by XMM-Newton and other satellites in 2009. We have studied the response of the photoionised gas to the changes in the ionising flux produced by the central regions. We used the five discrete ionisation components A-E that we detected in the time-averaged spectrum taken with the RGS instrument. By using the ratio of fluxed EPIC-pn and RGS spectra, we were able to put tight constraints on the variability of the absorbers. Monitoring with the Swift satellite started six weeks before the XMM-Newton observations. This allowed us to use the history of the ionising flux and to develop a model for the time-dependent photoionisation in this source. Results. Components A and B are too weak for variability studies, but the distance for component A is already known from optical imaging of the [O iii] line to be about 3 kpc. During the five weeks of the XMM-Newton observations we found no evidence of changes in the three X-ray dominant ionisation components C, D, and E, despite a huge soft X-ray intensity increase of 60% in the middle of our campaign. This excludes high-density gas close to the black hole. Instead, using our time-dependent modelling, we find that the density is very low, and we derive firm lower limits to the distance of these components. For component D we find evidence for variability on longer time scales by comparing our spectra to archival data taken in 2000 and 2001, yielding an upper limit to the distance. For component E we derive an upper limit to the distance based on the argument that the thickness of the absorbing layer must be less than its distance to the black hole. Combining these results, at the 90% confidence level, component C has a distance of >70 pc, component D is between 5-33 pc, and component E has a distance >5 pc but smaller than 21-400 pc, depending upon modelling details. These results are consistent with the upper limits that we derived from the HST/COS observations of our campaign and point to an origin of the dominant, slow (v < 1000 km s-1) outflow components in the NLR or torus-region of Mrk 509. X-ray absorption line spectroscopy has recently shown evidence for previously unknown Ultra-last Outflows (UFOs) in radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGNs). These have been detected essentially through blueshifted Fe XXV/XXVI K-shell transitions. In the previous paper of this series we defined UFOs as those highly ionized absorbers with an outflow velocity higher than 10,000 km s-1 and assessed the statistical significance of the associated blueshifted absorption lines in a large sample of 42 local radio-quiet AGNs observed with XMM-Newton. The present paper is an extension of that work. First, we report a detailed curve of growth analysis of the main Fe XXV/XXW transitions in photoionized plasmas. Then, we estimate an average spectral energy distribution for the sample sources and directly model the Fe K absorbers in the XMM-Newton spectra with the detailed Xstar photoionization code. We confirm that the frequency of sources in the radio-quiet sample showing UFOs is >35% and that the majority of the Fe K absorbers are indeed associated with UFOs. The outflow velocity distribution spans from ~ 10,000 km s-1 (~0.03c) up to ~100,000 km s-1 (~0.3c), with a peak and mean value of ~42,000 km s-1 (~0.14c). The ionization parameter is very high and in the range log ξ ~ 3-6 erg s-1 cm, with a mean value of log ξ ~ 4.2 erg s-1 cm. The associated column densities are also large, in the range NH ~ 1022-1024 cm-2 with a mean value of NH ~ 1023 cm-2. We discuss and estimate how selection effects, such as those related to the limited instrumental sensitivity at energies above 7 keV, may hamper the detection of even higher velocities and higher ionization absorbers. We argue that. overall, these results point to the presence of extremely ionized and possibly almost Compton-thick outflowing material in the innermost regions of AGNs. This also suggests that UFOs may potentially play a significant role in the expected cosmological feedback from AGNs and their study can provide important clues on the connection between accretion disks, winds, and jets. ABSTRACT We present the timing analysis of the four archived XMM- Newton observations of PG 1211+143. The source is well-known for its spectral complexity, comprising a strong soft excess and different absorption systems. Soft energy band (0.3-0.7 keV) lags are detected over all the four observations, in the frequency range ν≲ 6 × 10−4 Hz, where hard lags, similar to those observed in black hole X-ray binaries, are usually detected in smaller mass active galactic nuclei (AGN). The lag magnitude is energy-dependent, showing two distinct trends apparently connectable to the two flux levels at which the source is observed. The results are discussed in the context of disc- and/or corona-reprocessing scenarios, and of disc wind models. Similarities with the high-frequency negative lag of 1H 0707−495 are highlighted, and, if confirmed, they would support the hypothesis that the lag in PG 1211+143 represents the signature of the same underlying mechanism, whose temporal characteristics scale with the mass of the central object. We report on partially overlapping XMM–Newton (∼260 ks) and Suzaku (∼100 ks) observations of the iron K band in the nearby, bright type 1 Seyfert galaxy Mrk 509. The source shows a resolved neutral Fe K line, most probably produced in the outer part of the accretion disc. Moreover, the source shows further emission bluewards of the 6.4 keV line due to ionized material. This emission is well reproduced by a broad line produced in the accretion disc, while it cannot be easily described by scattering or emission from photoionized gas at rest. The summed spectrum of all XMM–Newton observations shows the presence of a narrow absorption line at 7.3 keV produced by highly ionized outflowing material. A spectral variability study of the XMM–Newton data shows an indication for an excess of variability at 6.6–6.7 keV. These variations may be produced in the red wing of the broad ionized line or by variation of a further absorption structure. The Suzaku data indicate that the neutral Fe Kα line intensity is consistent with being constant on long time-scales (of a few years), and they also confirm as most likely the interpretation of the excess blueshifted emission in terms of a broad ionized Fe line. The average Suzaku spectrum differs from the XMM–Newton one in the disappearance of the 7.3 keV absorption line and around 6.7 keV, where the XMM–Newton data alone suggested variability. We report results from the XMM–Newton observation of IRAS 13197−1627, a luminous infrared (IR) galaxy with a Seyfert 1.8 nucleus. The hard X-ray spectrum is steep (Γ∼ 2.5) and is absorbed by Compton-thin ( NH∼ 4 × 1023 cm−2) neutral gas. We detect a Fe Kα emission line at 6.4 keV, consistent with transmission through the absorber. The most striking result of our spectral analysis is the detection of a dominant X-ray reflection component and broad Fe line from the inner accretion disc. The reflection-dominated hard X-ray spectrum is confirmed by the strong Compton hump seen in a previous BeppoSAX observation and could be the sign that most of the primary X-rays are radiated from a compact corona (or base of the jet) within a few gravitational radii from the black hole. We also detect a relatively strong absorption line at 6.81 keV which, if interpreted as Fe xxv resonant absorption, implies an outflow with velocity ∼5 × 103 km s−1. In the soft energy band, the high-resolution gratings and the CCD-resolution data show the presence of both photoionized gas and thermal plasma emission, the latter being most likely associated with a recent starburst of 15–20 M⊙ yr−1. We present an analysis of hard X-ray features in the spectrum of the bright Sy 1 galaxy Mrk 335 observed by the XMM–Newton satellite. Our analysis confirms the presence of a broad, ionized Fe Kα emission line in the spectrum, first found by Gondoin et al. The broad line can be modelled successfully by relativistic accretion disc reflection models. This interpretation is unusually robust in the case of Mrk 335 because of the lack of any ionized (‘warm’) absorber and the absence a clear narrow core to the line. Partial covering by neutral gas cannot, however, be ruled out statistically as the origin of the broad residuals. Regardless of the underlying continuum we report, for the first time in this source, the detection of a narrow absorption feature at the rest frame energy of ∼5.9 keV. If the feature is identified with a resonance absorption line of iron in a highly ionized medium, the redshift of the line corresponds to an inflow velocity of ∼0.11–0.15 c. We present a simple model for the inflow, accounting approximately for relativistic and radiation pressure effects, and use Monte Carlo methods to compute synthetic spectra for qualitative comparison with the data. This modelling shows that the absorption feature can plausibly be reproduced by infalling gas providing that the feature is identified with Fe xxvi. We require the inflowing gas to extend over a limited range of radii at a few tens of rg to match the observed feature. The mass accretion rate in the flow corresponds to 60 per cent of the Eddington limit, in remarkable agreement with the observed rate. The narrowness of the absorption line tends to argue against a purely gravitational origin for the redshift of the line, but given the current data quality we stress that such an interpretation cannot be ruled out.
