There are different methods of optimizing energy usage of sensor nodes for increasing the life time of wireless sensor network. The first node death time is considered to be the effective life time of any network. Therefore, our objective is to adopt such routing algorithms and node deployment policy so that no individual node dies sooner while others are alive. There are different reasons for the early death of first node, which at extreme cases may lead to partition of the network. One of the important reasons for which node energy might run out early is that number of transmitted messages per geographic area unit is different. A node is more likely to run out of its energy earlier than the others in an area where message density is high. Therefore, if we can predict the areas in the network where message density is likely to be higher than the rest of the area in the network, then we can increase node density while aiming at uniform energy dissipation. The nodes which reside nearer to the sink node face huge traffic load that lead to non-uniform energy dissipation. Hence, node density nearer to the sink node has to be increased. Digital image-correlation (DIC) algorithms rely heavily on the accuracy of the initial values provided by whole-pixel search algorithms for structural displacement monitoring. When the measured displacement is too large or exceeds the search domain, the calculation time and memory consumption of the DIC algorithm will increase greatly, and even fail to obtain the correct result. The paper introduced two edge-detection algorithms, Canny and Zernike moments in digital image-processing (DIP) technology, to perform geometric fitting and sub-pixel positioning on the specific pattern target pasted on the measurement position, and to obtain the structural displacement according to the change of the target position before and after deformation. This paper compared the difference between edge detection and DIC in accuracy and calculation speed through numerical simulation, laboratory, and field tests. The study demonstrated that the structural displacement test based on edge detection is slightly inferior to the DIC algorithm in terms of accuracy and stability. As the search domain of the DIC algorithm becomes larger, its calculation speed decreases sharply, and is obviously slower than the Canny and Zernike moment algorithms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bifunctional stop codons that have both translation and termination functions in the same species are important for understanding the evolution and function of genetic codes in living organisms. Considering the high frequency of bifunctional codons but limited number of available genomes in ciliates, we de novo sequenced seven representative ciliate genomes to explore the evolutionary history of stop codons. We further propose a stop codon reassignment quantification method (stopCR) that can identify bifunctional codons and measure their frequencies in various eukaryotic organisms. Using our newly developed method, we found two previously undescribed genetic codes, illustrating the prevalence of bifunctional stop codons in ciliates. Overall, evolutionary genomic analyses suggest that gain or loss of reassigned stop codons in ciliates is shaped by their living environment, the eukaryotic release factor 1, and suppressor tRNAs. Background and objectives: Real-time blood flow variation is crucial for understanding the dynamic development of coronary atherosclerosis. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of varying extent of stenosis on the hemodynamic features in left anterior descending coronary artery. Methods: Various Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models were constructed with patient-specific CT image data, using actual fractional flow reserve (FFR) as boundary conditions to provide a real-time quantitative description of hemodynamic properties. The hemodynamic parameters, such as the local and instantaneous wall shear stress (WSS), oscillating shear index (OSI) and relative residence time (RRT), blood flow velocity and pressure drop during various phases of cardiac cycle were provided in detail. Results: There was no evident variation in hemodynamic parameters in the cases of less than 50% stenosis while there were abrupt and dramatic changes in hemodynamics when the stenosis aggravated from 60 to 70%. Furthermore, when the stenosis was beyond 70%, there existed substantial pressure difference, WSS, and blood flow velocity in the center of the stenosis. Although OSI and RRT increased along with the aggravation of stenosis, they appeared with obvious abnormalities across all cases, even in mild stenosis. Conclusion: The simulation could present a dynamic and comprehensive profile of how hemodynamic parameters vary in accordance with divergent severities of stenosis, which could serve as an effective reference for the clinicians to have a deeper insight into the pathological mechanism of coronary atherosclerosis and stenosis. The mode shape-aided method provides a simple and effective way for cable force determination, which, however, requires accurate parameter identification of the cable structure. This paper proposes a phase-based video motion magnification to process the image sequences of a cable. Digital image correlations were engaged to measure the dynamic displacement–time history, through tracking the surface characteristic features of the cable. Thereafter, a frequency–domain decomposition technique was applied to extract the natural frequency and mode shape of the cable from the displacement–time history measurements. The identified cable mode shapes, along with a tensioned pinned-pinned cable model, were used to estimate the cable force. The accuracy of the proposed methodology was subsequently verified through laboratory testing on an inclined cable model and field testing on a typical hanger cable of a real-world arch bridge. Overall, the study results indicated that the proposed methodology could expediently and cost-effectively estimate the tension forces of a cable with reasonably acceptable identification accuracy. Accurate detection of arrhythmia signal types is of great significance for the early detection of heart disease and its subsequent treatment. The primary purpose of this study is to explore an electrocardiogram (ECG) classification system to improve its performance and achieve excellent computing performance, especially for large sample datasets. We classified ECG signals using the Hurst exponent, which is an ECG feature extracted by multifractal detrended moving average cross-correlation analysis (MF-XDMA). In addition, we used multifractal methods such as multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA), multifractal detrended cross-correlation analysis (MF-DCCA) and multifractal detrended moving average (MF-DMA) to extract the features of ECG signals, and we used a support vector machine (SVM) to classify the four types of feature data. The experimental results show that MF-XDMA-SVM has the best classification performance for atrial premature beat (APB) and bigeminy signals, which indicates that MF-XDMA-SVM is the most effective for the extraction of ECG signal sequence features among the four multifractal models. Background: Ciliated protists are a widely distributed, morphologically diverse, and genetically heterogeneous group of unicellular organisms, usually known for containing two types of nuclei: a transcribed polyploid macronucleus involved in gene expression and a silent diploid micronucleus responsible for transmission of genetic material during sexual reproduction and generation of the macronucleus. Although studies in a few species of culturable ciliated protists have revealed the highly dynamic nature of replicative and recombination events relating the micronucleus to the macronucleus, the broader understanding of the genomic diversity of ciliated protists, as well as their phylogenetic relationships and metabolic potential, has been hampered by the inability to culture numerous other species under laboratory conditions, as well as the presence of symbiotic bacteria and microalgae which provide a challenge for current sequencing technologies. Here, we optimized single-cell sequencing methods and associated data analyses, to effectively remove contamination by commensal bacteria, and generated high-quality genomes for a number of Euplotia species. Results: We obtained eight high-quality Euplotia genomes by using single-cell genome sequencing techniques. The genomes have high genomic completeness, with sizes between 68 and 125 M and gene numbers between 14K and 25K. Through comparative genomic analysis, we found that there are a large number of gene expansion events in Euplotia genomes, and these expansions are closely related to the phenotypic evolution and specific environmental adaptations of individual species. We further found four distinct subgroups in the genus Euplotes, which exhibited considerable genetic distance and relative lack of conserved genomic syntenies. Comparative genomic analyses of Uronychia and its relatives revealed significant gene expansion associated with the ciliary movement machinery, which may be related to the unique and strong swimming ability. Conclusions: We employed single-cell genomics to obtain eight ciliate genomes, characterized the underestimated genomic diversity of Euplotia, and determined the divergence time of representative species in this subclass for the first time. We also further investigated the extensive duplication events associated with speciation and environmental adaptation. As tobacco waste production from tobacco industry increases, it becomes important to convert tobacco waste into high value-added products. In this paper, the production of aroma compounds from the fast pyrolysis of tobacco waste was investigated, two kinds of tobacco waste—tobacco leaf fragments (TF), tobacco stems (TS)—and Modeng-brand cigarette tobacco (MT) were used as raw materials in a fluidized bed pyrolysis reactor. Tobacco types, pyrolysis temperatures, and bio-oil separation methods were assigned as influence factors, and the type and content of bio-oil-containing aroma compounds were defined as evaluation standards. Our results indicate that (i) the bio-oil yield under the same pyrolysis temperature (350 °C) is TS > MT > TF; (ii) when TF and MT are used as raw materials, low-temperature (about 350 °C) pyrolysis is beneficial for the production of aroma compounds, whereas TS requires higher temperature (more than 380 °C) pyrolysis; and (iii) bio-oils obtained from different separation methods contain different kinds of aroma compounds, with some compounds requiring certain separation methods. The formation and pyrolysis mechanism of nitrogen (N)-containing compounds in tobacco was also studied. Assuming the distance between two nodal points of a specific cable vibration mode as the effective length of a pinned–pinned cable, mode shape–aided cable tension estimation methods are employed to estimate the cable force. This article proposes a framework based on digital image correlation technique for remote measurement of the dynamic displacement time history of cables in cable structures. Frequency domain decomposition technique is then used to extract the cable natural frequencies and mode shapes. Identified cable mode shapes are used along with a tensioned pinned–pinned cable model to estimate the cable force. A novel distributed power allocation scheme for analog network coding (ANC) in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is proposed by using statistical channel knowledge at the transmitters only. The scheme considers nonorthogonal amplified-and- forward (NAF) protocol. In the derivation, a general Rayleigh fading multiple hop network is accurately approximated by a simpler two hop network, and the closed-formed expression for the outage probability of the simplified two hop network is obtained and optimized with respect to the power allocation. Numerical results show that the derived power allocation scheme has significant performance gain over the equal power scheme. In some cases, it approaches the optimal scheme. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The presence of intermediate supports usually imposes difficulties in identifying the tension force of stayed cables in cable-stayed bridges or hanger cables in arch bridges. This paper establishes the partial differential equations of motion of the cable and derives two numerical models with (Model 1) and without (Model 2) considering the flexural rigidity. The effects of two intermediate supports on the identification accuracy of the cable tension force are further studied analytically and experimentally. The effects of several non-dimensional parameters (e.g. damper location, support stiffness, flexural rigidity, and mode order of the cable) on the identification accuracy of the models are also investigated. It is theoretically concluded that the simplified Model 2 provides acceptable accuracy on tension force identification when the non-dimensional parameter ξ is greater than 90 (slender cables), whereas the accurate Model 1 can be applied for tension force identification at any scenarios. Free-form surfaces are defined with NURBS (non-uniform rational basis spline) for most computer-aided engineering (CAE) applications. The NURBS method requires the definition of parameters such as weights, knot vectors and degree of the curves which make the configuration of the surface computationally expensive and complex. When the control points are randomly spaced in the point cloud and the topology of the desired surface is unknown, surface configuration with NURBS method becomes a challenging task. Optimization attempts for such surfaces create enormous amounts of computing data when coupled with physics solvers such as finite element analysis (FEA) tools and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools. In this paper, an adapted Delaunay triangulation (ADT) method for surface generation from the random points cloud is proposed and compared with widely used implicit functions based NURBS fitting method. The surface generated from ADT method can be simultaneously used with stochastic optimization algorithms (SOA) and CFD applications to search for the optimal results with minimum computational costs. It was observed while comparing ADT with NURBS-based geometry configuration that the computation time can be reduced by 3 folds. The corresponding deviation between both geometry configuration methods has been observed as low as 5% for all optimisation scenarios during the comparison. In addition, ADT method can provide light weight CFD approach as any instance of design iteration has at least half storage footprint as compared to corresponding NURBS surface. The proposed approach provides novel methodology towards establishing light weight CFD geometry, absence of which currently isolates methodologies for optimization and CFD analysis. Microbial strains capable of degrading petroleum hydrocarbons were isolated from the Yellow River Delta and screened for bio-surfactant production. The bio-surfactant-producing characteristics of the isolates were evaluated, and all the isolates which could produce bio-surfactant were identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The results showed that the isolates belong to Bacillus sp. (72%), Ochrobactrum sp. (0.16%), Brevundimonas sp. (0.06%) and Brevibacterium sp. (0.06%). The biodegradability of crude oil, gasoline, diesel oil and other hydrocarbons by microbial strains were studied, among which the biodegrading ability of strain P1 and strain P19 is higher than other strains. Both strains P1 and P19 can degrade n-hexane and n-hexadecane effectively and have wide substrate extensiveness. In addition, Ni promoted the biodegradability of toluene by both strain P1 and strain P19, while Pb inhibited the growth of strain P19 and decreased its ability to biodegrade toluene. The studies revealed that microbes including strain P1 and strain P19 can be utilized in bioremediation of co-contaminated water with petroleum and heavy metals including Ni and Pb. Microlunatus phosphovorus NM-1 is a polyphosphate (poly-P)-accumulating bacterium that accumulates poly-P under aerobic conditions and degrades poly-P under anaerobic conditions. In this study, the two-component system (TCS) PolS-PolR was identified in NM-1, and the response regulator PolR was found to directly bind to the promoters of genes related to phosphate transport (MLP_RS00235, MLP_RS23035, and MLP_RS24590); poly-P catabolism (MLP_RS12905) and poly-P synthesis (MLP_RS23025). RT-qPCR assays showed that ppgk (MLP_RS12905), ppk (MLP_RS23025), pstS (MLP_RS23035), and pit (MLP_RS24590) were down-regulated during the aerobic-anaerobic shift. The sequence GTTCACnnnnnGTTCaC was identified as a recognition sequence for PolR by MEME analysis and DNase I footprinting. EMSAs and ChIP-qPCR assays indicated that PolR binds to the promoters of pit (MLP_RS00235), ppgk (MLP_RS12905), ppk (MLP_RS23025), pstS (MLP_RS23035) and pit (MLP_RS24590), and ChIP-qPCR further suggested that the binding affinity of PolR was lower under anaerobic conditions than under aerobic conditions in vivo. These findings indicate that the PolS-PolR TCS in M. phosphovorus may be involved in the regulation of poly-P metabolism in response to levels of dissolved oxygen in the environment, and our results provide insights into new approaches for understanding the mechanisms of phosphorus accumulation and release. Salient object detection (SOD) has been attracting a lot of interest, and recently many computational models have been developed. Here, the authors formulate a SOD model, in which saliency map is computed as a combination of the colour, its distribution‐based saliency and orientation saliency. Similar to traditional SODs, the proposed method is based on super‐pixel segmentation and super‐pixel utilises both colour and its distribution‐based saliency to generate a coarse saliency map. However, distinct from traditional SODs, authors further use orientation contrast to optimise the coarse saliency map to obtain an improved saliency map. Authors' contributions are twofold. First, the authors combine colour uniqueness and its distribution with local orientation information (LOI) used in Itti's model to effectively improve profiles of salient regions. Second, a reciprocal function is defined to substitute the Gabor function used in LOI, and the authors have proved that the substitution could detect relatively homogeneous and uniform regions at the boundary of salient object, whereas it is what the traditional models lack. Authors' approach significantly outperforms state‐of‐the‐art methods on four benchmark datasets, while the authors demonstrate that the proposed method runs as fast as most existing algorithms. Live poultry markets (LPM) are one of the most important sources of human infection with avian influenza virus (AIV). During our routine surveillance of AIV, we identified an H9N6 virus (JX-H9N6) in a LPM in Nanchang city, Jiangxi Province, China. Using Bayesian coalescent analysis, it was predicted that JX-H9N6 had originated from a reassortment event between H9N2 and H6N6 AIVs in early 2014, instead of being derived from an H9N6 virus reported previously. Mutations in HA, PB1, PA, M, and NS protein, which could increase mammalian transmission and virulence, were also detected. Currently, both H9N2 and H6N6 AIVs are widely distributed in poultry and contribute to the generation of novel reassortant viruses causing human infection. Many viruses can cause respiratory diseases in humans. Although great advances have been achieved in methods of diagnosis, it remains challenging to identify pathogens in unexplained pneumonia (UP) cases. In this study, we applied next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology and a metagenomic approach to detect and characterize respiratory viruses in UP cases from Guizhou Province, China. A total of 33 oropharyngeal swabs were obtained from hospitalized UP patients and subjected to NGS. An unbiased metagenomic analysis pipeline identified 13 virus species in 16 samples. Human rhinovirus C was the virus most frequently detected and was identified in seven samples. Human measles virus, adenovirus B 55 and coxsackievirus A10 were also identified. Metagenomic sequencing also provided virus genomic sequences, which enabled genotype characterization and phylogenetic analysis. For cases of multiple infection, metagenomic sequencing afforded information regarding the quantity of each virus in the sample, which could be used to evaluate each viruses' role in the disease. In this paper, we consider a class of exponential sums from some half quadratic binomials. The exponential sums are proven to be eleven-valued with maximal magnitude (1/2(q-\sqrt q)) except for the trivial value $q$ . As applications, first, we investigate the autocorrelation and cross-correlation distribution among the sequences in a sequence family. Second, we determine the weight distributions of several classes of linear codes. Some of the dual codes have minimum distance four, which are optimal with respect to the Hamming bound. Three novel H2O2-activated aromatic nitrogen mustard prodrugs ( 6- 8) are reported. These compounds contain a DNA alkylating agent connected to a H2O2-responsive trigger by different electron-withdrawing linkers so that they are inactive towards DNA but can be triggered by H2O2 to release active species. The activity and selectivity of these compounds towards DNA were investigated by measuring DNA interstrand cross-link (ICL) formation in the presence or absence of H2O2. An electron-withdrawing linker unit, such as a quaternary ammonia salt ( 6), a carboxyamide ( 7), and a carbonate group ( 8), is sufficient to deactivate the aromatic nitrogen mustard resulting in less than 1.5 % cross-linking formation. However, H2O2 can restore the activity of the effectors by converting a withdrawing group to a donating group, therefore increasing the cross-linking efficiency (>20 %). The stability and reaction sites of the ICL products were determined, which revealed that alkylation induced by 7 and 8 not only occurred at the purine sites but also at the pyrimidine site. For the first time, we isolated and characterized the monomer adducts formed between the canonical nucleosides and the aromatic nitrogen mustard ( 15) which supported that nitrogen mustards reacted with dG, dA, and dC. The activation mechanism was studied by NMR spectroscopic analysis. An in vitro cytotoxicity assay demonstrated that compound 7 with a carboxyamide linker dramatically inhibited the growth of various cancer cells with a GI50 of less than 1 μ M, whereas compound 6 with a charged linker did not show any obvious toxicity in all cell lines tested. These data indicated that a neutral carboxyamide linker is preferable for developing nitrogen mustard prodrugs. Our results showed that 7 is a potent anticancer prodrug that can serve as a model compound for further development. The objective of this study is to investigate and compare the effectiveness of letrozole and clomiphene citrate for improving fertility outcomes, including pregnancy rate, miscarriage rate, multiple pregnancy rate, and incidence rate of adverse events, number of dominant follicles, endometrial thickness at hCG day and serum E2 on hCG day. MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, CNKI and CBMdisc databases were searched up to March 2013. Randomized controlled trials comparing letrozole with clomiphene in women with unexplained infertility were included. Pooled relative risk, mean difference and 95% confidence intervals were calculated. We found that there are no differences in pregnancy, miscarriage and multiple pregnancy rates, incidence rate of adverse events, number of dominant follicles (>18 mm) and endometrial thickness at hCG day in women with unexplained infertility between letrozole and clomiphene regimens. The mean (±standard deviation) concentration of serum E2 on hCG day was lower in those treated with letrozole than those with clomiphene. The subgroup of 2.5 mg letrozole displayed a statistically significant higher rate of clinical pregnancy as compared with 100 mg of clomiphene. The results of this study conclude that letrozole is as effective as clomiphene in women with unexplained infertility. Letrozole at a dose of 2.5 mg seems more effective. Further high-quality studies assessing the possible effectiveness of letrozole in selected groups of patients are warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim Recent studies suggest that misoprostol may be more effective than dinoprostone in pregnant women with unfavorable cervix. The objective here is to investigate and compare the efficacy and safety of intravaginal misoprostol and intracervical dinoprostone for labor induction, including incidence of cesarean section, vaginal delivery rate within 24 h, uterine hyperstimulation, tachysystole, oxytocin augmentation, neonatal intensive care unit ( NICU) admissions, and Apgar score of less than 7 at 1 and 5 min. Methods Databases searched were MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, up to July 2013. Randomized controlled trials comparing intravaginal misoprostol with intracervical dinoprostone in women with singleton pregnancy, intact membranes and unfavorable cervix ( Bishop's <6) were included. Pooled relative risk, mean difference and 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Results The use of misoprostol was significantly effective in increasing the rate of vaginal delivery within 24 h and less oxytocin augmentation when compared with dinoprostone. However, the incidents of uterine hyperstimulation and tachysystole were significantly higher under the misoprostol protocol than dinoprostone protocol. Furthermore, we found similar efficiency in the rate of cesarean delivery, NICU admission and Apgar score at 1 and 5 min among the study groups. Conclusion Intravaginal misoprostol appears to be more efficient for labor induction than intracervical dinoprostone; however, dinoprostone has been demonstrated to be safer because of the lower incidence of uterine hyperstimulation and tachysystole. Crystalline yttrium iron garnet (YIG) is an important magneto-optical material. However, this crystal is an incongruent melting compound. As is well known, compared to the crystal growth of a congruent melting compound by using the Czochralski method, the crystal growth of an incongruent melting compound is more difficult. In this work, a system for growing Ga:YIG single crystals by the edge-defined film-fed growth (EFG) method was designed and constructed, and the mechanism of crystal growth was also preliminarily studied. The Ga3+ dopant concentration, the Curie temperature and the transmission spectra of as-grown crystals were investigated to evaluate their potential application in magneto-optical devices. This paper presents the design of a relative low-cost and more compatible autonomous helicopter system using HIROBO 50 scale as an experimental platform. Because of the limit of helicopter payload, we choose the MP2128 Autopilot and a number of sensors to build the system and the weight of instrumentation is about 500 g, much less than the payload capability of model helicopter. Thus it is feasible to design the binocular stereo-camera system to achieve full autonomous flight and the whole weight (include power) of instrumentation is about 1500 g. Energy prediction plays a vital role in designing an efficient power management system for any environmentally powered Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Most of the Moving Average (MA)-based energy prediction methods depend on past energy readings of the concerned node to predict its future energy availability. However, in case of RF powered WSNs the harvesting history of the main node along with neighbouring nodes can also be used to develop a more robust prediction technique. In this paper, we propose a Multi-Node energy prediction method for Radio Frequency Energy Harvesting (RF-EH) WSNs, which predicts the future energy availability by taking into account harvesting history of all nodes surrounding the main node. We analyse the effective distance for prediction and also develop a mathematical model to compute the optimum value of prediction interval, which has a major effect in prediction accuracy and system design, considering energy neutrality. Results show that Multi-Node prediction is less sensitive to prediction interval while inheriting the advantages of MA techniques. Also, nodes located at a larger distance were utilized less for prediction, and as the prediction interval increased, the utilization of more distant nodes decreased.
