Purpose: To evaluate the effect of exercise with or without dietary advice on muscle mass, muscle strength and physical functioning (including perceived physical functioning and physical performance) in old cancer survivors. Methods: A systematic literature search was undertaken in May 2022 by searching multiple databases. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared exercise with or without dietary advice to control group among old cancer survivors were screened. Meta-analyses were conducted to evaluate the effects of exercise with or without dietary advice on muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical functioning. Results: Data from 21 trials were included in this study, including 16 exercise trials and 5 exercise + dietary advice studies. Regarding exercise, evidence supported its significant benefits on muscle strength among old cancer survivors, while no effect was seen on physical functioning and muscle mass. Concerning exercise combined with dietary advice, meta-analysis showed overall benefits on physical functioning, while limited study examined muscle mass and strength. As for safety and feasibility of interventions, low recruitment rate, moderate compliance, and few adverse events were reported. Conclusions: Exercise combined with dietary advice is a more effective approach for old cancer survivors in improving physical functioning compared with exercise alone. Future study is needed to explore the effects of exercise combined with dietary advice on combating sarcopenia. As recruitment and compliance among old cancer survivors were challenging, strategies to stimulate their motivation and promote habitual healthy behaviour are warranted. In the year 2020, Hong Kong experienced four COVID-19 epidemic waves. The present study aimed to examine the transition of sleep disturbances and explore its associated factors across the later three epidemic waves. Among the 1138 respondents who participated in an online survey at the second wave (T1, April 2020), 338 and 378 participants also completed a follow-up at the third (T2, August 2020) and fourth waves (T3, December 2020), respectively. Participants completed the Insomnia Severity Index and an investigator-designed questionnaire regarding potential factors associated with sleep change such as perceived risk of being infected, economic stress, and confidence in the government and health care professional. Sample of this study were mainly female (67.7%), married (50.3%), young adults (54.2%) with tertiary education (81.6%). Maintaining normal sleep was the most prevalent trajectory of sleep of all three waves (50.5%), followed by persistent insomnia (17.2%) and remitted insomnia (9.0%). Besides female, older-age and lower education level, the results showed that increment in worry about family being infected (adjusted risk ratio, RR = 1.28), perceived interference of daily lives (adjusted RR = 1.19), and economic distress (adjusted RR = 1.24) were significantly associated with the development of clinical insomnia during the three epidemic waves. These factors were also associated with worsening of other sleep parameters. Insomnia being persistent across the three waves of COVID-19 outbreaks was common. Increasing economic distress, daily interference, and worry about family members being infected were associated with an increasing risk of clinical insomnia across the three COVID-19 outbreaks. Aim and Objectives: To assess (1) the experience, knowledge and preferences of end‐of‐life care among frail nursing home residents and (2) the preferences of residents' family caregivers. Background: Globally, nursing homes are becoming an important place where many older people will receive their end‐of‐life care. Thus, assessing the end‐of‐life care preferences among nursing home residents is crucial. Design: Cross‐sectional survey. Methods: Residents aged ≥65 years, with frail or pre‐frail status (n = 286) in 34 nursing homes were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the outcomes and regression analyses were used to evaluate factors related to the outcomes. Kappa statistics were used to examine the agreement between the preferences among 21 residents and their family caregivers. The manuscript was guided by the STROBE checklist. Results: 5.9% and 10.5% of the participants had heard of advance care planning and advance directive respectively. After explanations of the terms by the research team, 42.3% of the participants preferred advance care planning, whereas 22.0% preferred advance directive. The top reason for not preferring advance care planning/advance directive is perceiving them as 'not necessary'. Nursing homes were the most preferred place to receive end‐of‐life care (41.6%). Whereas hospitals were the most preferred place for death (36.0%). The agreement among resident and family caregiver dyads ranged from none to minimal in most outcomes. Conclusions: This study revealed the lack of awareness around advance care planning and advance directive among frail nursing home residents. Future research should focus on developing effective educational interventions to enhance the residents' awareness of these topics. Relevance to clinical practice: To increase awareness among nursing home residents, more educational programs should be implemented. Background: Studies on examining the relationship between physical activity patterns and frailty are lacking. This study examined physical activity patterns in older people and investigated the relationship between physical activity and frailty as well as identifying the predictors of frailty.Methods: We used a nationally representative longitudinal database, the Taiwan Longitudinal Study of Aging (TLSA) database, and data for a 20-year period were extracted and analyzed. A total of 5131 participants aged ≥ 60 years in 1996 were included in the current analysis. Information regarding demographic characteristics, frailty, physical activity, comorbidities, oral health, and depressive symptoms was extracted from the TLSA database. Physical activity patterns were examined using group-based trajectory modeling from 1996 to 2015. Potential predictors were examined by performing multivariate logistic regression.Results: Four trajectories of the physical activity pattern were found: consistently physically inactive (33.7%), consistently physically active (21.5%), incline (21.6%), and decline (23.2%). Throughout the period, the trajectories of the four groups significantly differed from each other at year 2015, with the incline and decline groups exhibiting the lowest and highest frailty scores, respectively (p < 0.001). Older age, male, poor oral health, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and depressive symptoms were identified as risk factors for frailty.Conclusion: Physical activity reduces the risk of chronic conditions, which contributes to healthy longevity. This study can guide the development of future research and interventions to manage frailty in older people, particularly in considering previous physical activity trajectories within the life course. Purpose: Perceived cognitive impairment refers to cognitive dysfunction that particularly involves impairment in working or short-term memory, and inattention. This study aimed to identify factors associated with perceived cognitive impairment in patients with advanced lung cancer. Methods: This cross-sectional analysis used pooled data from a prospective, ongoing randomized controlled trial examining the effectiveness of exercise in patients with advanced lung cancer (Trial Registration: NCT04119778). Patients diagnosed with stage IIIB or IV non-small cell lung cancer were recruited from three public hospitals in Hong Kong between December 2018 and December 2021. Demographics, daily step count, sleep quality, fatigue, depression, anxiety, and perceived cognitive impairment were included in the analyses. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the most critical risk factors associated with perceived cognitive impairments in attention and memory. Results: A total of 226 patients were included and analyzed, 35.4% of patients had perceived attention impairment and 58.4% had perceived memory impairment. The daily step count (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 0.496; confidence interval [CI] = 0.258–0.954), fatigue (aOR = 1.342; CI = 1.903–1.648), and anxiety (aOR = 1.179; CI = 1.042–1.335) were associated with a significantly increased risk of perceived attention impairment, while anxiety (aOR = 1.126; CI = 1.008–1.257) was identified as the most significant factor for perceived memory impairment. Conclusion: The findings of this study can inform the design of effective interventions to reduce perceived cognitive impairment and promote the quality of life and well-being of patients with advanced lung cancer. Objectives: To evaluate the feasibility and potential effects of patient‐centred self‐administered acupressure for alleviating fatigue and co‐occurring symptoms among Chinese advanced cancer patients receiving treatment. Methods: Thirty advanced cancer patients who screened positive for moderate/severe fatigue with symptoms of insomnia and/or pain were recruited from a hospital in Hong Kong. They were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive a 4‐week patient‐centred self‐administered acupressure intervention or health education. Fatigue (primary outcome) and secondary outcomes (sleep quality, pain, fatigue–sleep disturbance–pain symptom cluster severity, anxiety, depression and quality of life) were measured by questionnaires and actigraphy. Results: Twenty‐four participants (80%) completed the study. Adherence to self‐administered acupressure practice was satisfactory, with all retained participants attending all sessions and 90.9% practising acupressure daily. All completers rated the class as very enjoyable or quite enjoyable. Fatigue, pain, symptom cluster severity, anxiety, depression and quality of life appeared to improve from baseline to post‐intervention in the intervention group. Among these outcomes, only the between‐group difference in anxiety post‐intervention was significant. The group × time interaction effect was nonsignificant for all outcomes. Conclusions: Patient‐centred self‐administered acupressure appears to be feasible and acceptable among advanced cancer patients. A fully powered trial is warranted to confirm the intervention effect. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence and preferences of moderate-to-vigorous physical activities (MVPA) in patients with advanced lung cancer, explore the social cognitive factors that were associated with MVPA and interest in PA counseling and program, and examine the mediating role of social cognitive factors. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. Questionnaires on PA levels, PA counseling and programming preferences, and social cognitive variables (social support and self-efficacy) were administered to 105 patients with advanced lung cancer. Linear regression model was used to explore the social cognitive factors associated with MVPA, and logistic regression model was used to explore the factors associated with interest in PA counseling and program. Mediation analysis was used to examine the mediating role of self-efficacy on social support and MVPA. Results: Merely 30.5% of patients met the recommended level of MVPA; however, the majority of patients (89.5%) were interested in PA program. Social support (β = 0.60; p = 0.007) and self-efficacy (β = 1.06; p = 0.027) were positively associated with MVPA. Specifically, self-efficacy mediated the relationship between social support and MVPA (β = 0.63, p = 0.004). Conclusion: The majority of the patients with advanced lung cancer did not meet the recommended level of MVPA; however, they are interested in receiving PA counseling and joining PA programs. Social support was key to promoting higher levels of MVPA, and the association was mediated by self-efficacy. Objective: To investigate the effects of rehabilitation either before or after operation for lung cancer on postoperative pulmonary complications and the length of hospital stay. Data sources: MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, CINAHL Plus, SPORTDiscus, PsycInfo and Embase were searched from inception until June 2021. Review methods: Inclusion criteria were patients scheduled to undergo or had undergone operation for lung cancer, randomised controlled trials comparing rehabilitative interventions initiated before hospital discharge to usual care control. Two reviewers independently assessed eligibility, extracted data and risks of bias. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) or standardised mean differences (SMDs) with 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) were estimated using random-effects meta-analyses. Results: Twenty-three studies were included (12 preoperative, 10 postoperative and 1 perioperative), with 2068 participants. The pooled postoperative pulmonary complication risk and length of hospital stay were reduced after preoperative interventions (OR = 0.32; 95% CI = 0.22, 0.47; I 2 = 0.0% and SMD = −1.68 days, 95% CI = −2.23, −1.13; I 2 = 77.8%, respectively). Interventions delivered during the immediate postoperative period did not have any significant effects on either postoperative pulmonary complication or length of hospital stay (OR = 0.85; 95% CI = 0.56, 1.29; I 2 = 0.0% and SMD = −0.23 days, 95% CI = −1.08, 0.63; I 2 = 64.6%, respectively). Meta-regression showed an association between a higher number of supervised sessions and shorter hospital length of stay in preoperative studies (β = −0.17, 95% CI = −0.29, −0.05). Conclusion: Preoperative rehabilitation is effective in reducing postoperative pulmonary complications and length of hospital stay associated with lung cancer surgery. Objective: To compare the effectiveness of two commonly used moist dressings, Aquacel and Aquacel Foam (both ConvaTec Ltd., UK), in managing split-thickness skin graft (STSG) donor site wounds. Method: Patients undergoing STSG harvesting for reconstruction were eligible for this quasi-experimental study. After reconstruction surgery, the Aquacel (A) or Aquacel Foam (AF) dressings were applied on the donor site wound. The STSG donor site was assessed by two trained research nurses daily. Clinical outcomes including pain on dressing removal, use of intravenous analgesics, signs and symptoms of wound infection, incidence of exudate leakage and percentage healed were recorded in a standardised form. Cost of the dressing change was retrieved from the hospital billing system. Results: Of 50 patients recruited, 25 received dressing A and 25 received the AF dressing for their STSG donor site wound. The average pain score on dressing removal was significantly lower in the AF dressing group compared with the A dressing group (0.8±0.8 versus 3.1±1.5, respectively (p=0.04)). Regression analysis demonstrated that compared with dressing A, the AF dressing was associated with a lower average pain score (beta: –2.27, standard error: 0.33; p<0.001), lower likelihood of pro re nata (PRN) intravenous analgesic use (odds ratio (OR)=0.21, 95% confidence interval: 0.06–0.71; p=0.01) and lower likelihood of exudate leakage (OR=0.11, p=0.01). The differences in time to wound healing, infection and cost were not statistically significant between the two groups. Conclusion: In this study, the AF dressing demonstrated superior performance in pain response on dressing removal for STSG donor site wounds compared with dressing A. Advanced lung cancer patients suffer from deteriorated physical function, which negatively impacts physical and psychological health. As little is known about sleep and physical function in this population, this study aimed to examine the association between subjective and objective sleep parameters and physical function among them. 164 advanced lung cancer patients were included. Objective sleep was measured by actigraphy (measured on non-dominant wrist for 72 h), and subjective sleep quality was assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Performance-based physical function was measured by Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT), 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), Sit-to-Stand Test, and One-leg Standing Test. Univariable and multivariable regression analyses were employed to examine the association between sleep and physical function. Total sleep time (TST) was significantly associated with the 6MWT (β = 0.259; 95% CI 0.120, 0.398; P < 0.001), TUGT (β = − 0.012; 95% CI = − 0.017, − 0.008; P < 0.001) and Sit-to-Stand Test (β = 0.027; 95% CI = 0.018, 0.035; P < 0.001) after adjustment for multiple covariates. PSQI global score was only significantly associated with TUGT (β = 0.140; 95% CI = 0.000, 0.280; P = 0.050) after adjustment for multiple covariates. Shorter sleep duration significantly predicted poorer physical performance in advanced lung cancer patients, and more attention is required for those with less than 4.3 h of sleep on average. Background: The survival rates of advanced cancer patients remain low despite clinical therapy advancements. However, physical activity showed promising effects in improving cancer outcomes. This review aimed to systematically evaluate and synthesize the effects on overall mortality of post-diagnosis physical activity in advanced cancer patients.Methods: A systematic search of six English databases (PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and SPORTDiscus) was conducted from their inception up to 3 February 2021. The association of physical activity with survival was evaluated by combining study-specific hazard ratios with random-effects meta-analysis models.Results: Eleven studies were identified. Compared with the reference group, higher-level physical activity was not significantly associated with a lower risk of earlier mortality in advanced cancer patients (InHR = - 0.18, 95% CI, - 0.36 to 0.01). When separated by study type, a higher level of physical activity in non-randomised trials was significantly associated with reduced mortality risk (InHR = - 0.25, 95% CI: - 0.44, - 0.06). However, in randomised trials, engaging in exercise was not significantly associated with a lower mortality risk compared with the control group (InHR = 0.08, 95%CI: - 0.17, 0.32).Conclusions: Discrepancies were uncovered in the effect of physical activity on overall survival in randomised and non-randomised trials. In non-randomised trials, a higher level of physical activity was significantly associated with a lower risk of mortality, whereas no significant effect on survival was observed during exercise interventions compared to the control in randomised trials. Considering the wider benefits of physical activity, exercise can still be recommended to improve outcomes for advanced cancer patients. Background: A majority of lung cancer patients are diagnosed at advanced stages. Although there is considerable evidence of the benefits of aerobic exercise and tai-chi for lung cancer patients, little is known about the comparative effectiveness of the 2 exercise modes in advanced lung cancer patients. Objectives: To explore the feasibility and preliminary effects of aerobic exercise and tai-chi interventions on survival and well-being among advanced lung cancer patients. Methods: In an assessor-blinded, exploratory randomized controlled trial, 30 advanced lung cancer patients were randomized to an aerobic exercise group, a tai-chi group (both attending 12-week, twice-weekly supervised sessions), or a self-management control group (receiving written exercise guidelines). The primary outcomes focused on feasibility including intervention completion, exercise adherence, and adverse events, while the secondary outcomes addressed preliminary effects and included 1-year survival, cancer symptoms (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Score, Brief Fatigue Inventory), quality of life (EORTC QLQ-C30, QLQ-LC13), physical performance (6-minute walk test, up-and-go, sit-to-stand, 1-leg standing), activity levels (actigraph), and circadian rhythms (salivary cortisol). Results: Intervention feasibility was established with a satisfactory completion rate at post-intervention for the aerobic exercise group (80%) and the tai-chi group (78%). The tai-chi group attained higher adherence than the exercise group in terms of attendance in supervised sessions (89% vs 75% of scheduled classes) and self-practice (225% vs 87% of the prescribed amount). Higher adherence to self-practice in the tai-chi group remained at the 6-month follow-up (81% vs 38% of the prescribed amount). No adverse event as a result of the intervention was reported. Effect-related outcomes did not show statistically significant changes in any group, except an improvement post-intervention in the up-and-go (−2.26, 95% CI: −4.04, −0.48) and sit-to-stand tests (4.52, 95% CI: 2.19, 6.85) in the aerobic exercise group. Conclusions: The findings support the feasibility of aerobic exercise and tai-chi interventions in advanced lung cancer patients. A future study with a larger sample from multiple sites is recommended to confirm the comparative effects of the 2 exercise interventions relative to the self-management group and to enhance the generalizability of the findings. This study aimed to revise and validate a Chinese version of Psychological Maltreatment of Women Inventory (C-PMWI). In the preparation phase, the PMWI was first revised for the possible cultural differences between Chinese and non-Chinese women. Supplementary items on use of electronic devices as a contemporary form of monitoring were added. Forward and back translated items were reviewed by a panel of intimate partner violence (IPV) experts, resulting in the scale-level content validity index of 0.94. Cognitive debriefing was conducted to confirm comprehensibility. The newly revised measure was administered to the sample of 1,198 Chinese women, recruited from community centers and shelters in Hong Kong. Exploratory factor analysis conducted on data from half the sample revealed a two-factor structure similar to the original English version: emotional-verbal and dominance-isolation. This structure was verified by confirmatory factor analysis with the other half of the sample. Known-groups validity was demonstrated by significant differences in scores between women with different relationship histories. Moderate-to-strong correlations of the C-PMWI with other forms of IPV, controlling behaviors, relationship satisfaction, and depression established convergent validity. The C-PMWI showed good internal consistency, with Cronbach's alpha >.9 for the entire scale and each subscale. The intraclass correlation across administrations 2 weeks was >.9, demonstrating test–retest reliability. The use of the comprehensive validation procedures in the present study provided evidence for both cultural appropriateness and satisfactory psychometric properties of the C-PMWI. Objective: To explore the relationship of exercise timing (exercising close to bedtime, exercising in daylight and maintaining fixed exercise schedule) with sleep quality, fatigue and rest–activity rhythms among lung cancer patients in Taiwan. Methods: Results from 43 lung cancer patients who were assigned and adhered to the exercise intervention in a 12‐week randomised controlled trial were analysed. The MD Anderson Symptom Inventory and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were administered. Actigraphs were used to assess rest–activity rhythms (in‐bed less than out‐of‐bed dichotomy index, I < O) and objective sleep parameters, including total sleep time (TST) and sleep onset latency (SOL). Results: Patients who exercised >4 hr before bedtime had significant improvement in fatigue (p <.0001), sleep quality (p =.012 for PSQI; p =.037 for TST; p =.017 for SOL) and rest–activity rhythms (p =.048 for I < O). Furthermore, patients who exercised with daylight exposure had a significant improvement in fatigue (p =.037) and sleep quality (p =.039 for PSQI). Conclusions: Exercising >4 hr before bedtime with daylight exposure is associated with improvement in rest–activity rhythms, sleep quality and fatigue in lung cancer patients. OBJECTIVE To test whether self‐administered acupressure reduces stress and stress‐related symptoms in caregivers of older family members. DESIGN In this randomized, assessor‐blind, controlled trial, 207 participants were randomized (1:1) to an acupressure intervention or a wait‐list control group. SETTING Community centers in Hong Kong, China. PARTICIPANTS Primary caregivers of an older family member who screened positive for caregiver stress with symptoms of fatigue, insomnia, or depression. INTERVENTION The 8‐week intervention comprised four training sessions on self‐administered acupressure, two follow‐up sessions for learning reinforcement, and daily self‐practice of self‐administered acupressure. MEASUREMENTS The primary outcome was caregiver stress (Caregiver Burden Inventory). Secondary outcomes included fatigue (Piper Fatigue Scale), insomnia (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), depression (Patient Health Questionnaire), and health‐related quality of life (QoL) (12‐item Short‐Form Health Survey version 2). An intention‐to‐treat analysis was adopted. RESULTS: Of 207 participants, 201 completed the study. Caregiver stress in the intervention group was significantly lower than that in the control group after 8 weeks (difference = −8.12; 95% confidence interval [CI] = −13.20 to −3.04; P =.002) and at 12‐week follow‐up (difference = −8.52; 95% CI = −13.91 to −3.12; P =.002). The intervention group, relative to the control group, also had significantly improved secondary outcomes of fatigue (difference = −0.84; 95% CI = −1.59 to −0.08; P =.031), insomnia (difference = −1.34; 95% CI = −2.40 to −0.27; P =.014), depression (difference = −1.76; 95% CI = −3.30 to −0.23; P =.025), and physical health‐related QoL (difference = 3.08; 95% CI = 0.28‐5.88; P =.032) after 8 weeks. CONCLUSION: Self‐administered acupressure intervention significantly relieves self‐reported caregiver stress and co‐occurring symptoms in those caring for older family members. Objective: To test the acceptability and feasibility of self-administered acupressure as an intervention for knee pain among middle-aged and older adults with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Methods: In this pilot randomized controlled trial, 35 participants with KOA were randomized to receive self-administered acupressure (n = 17, two self-administered acupressure training sessions followed by self-practice for 6 weeks) or knee health education (n = 18, two health education sessions about KOA management followed by self-care for 6 weeks). Current pain intensity (primary outcome) was measured using a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) at baseline and weeks 1, 2, 4 and 6 (post-intervention). Secondary outcome measures included worst and least pain intensity, the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), range of motion (ROM) of the knee joints and Short-Form Six-Dimension (SF-6D) scores for health-related quality of life. Results: Participants in both groups attended all training sessions. In the self-administered acupressure group, all subjects mastered the acupressure technique and passed a consistency check. Both groups showed a decreasing trend in current knee pain intensity measured using NRS post-intervention. A medium between-group effect size (0.40) was found, but between-group differences were not statistically significant. The other secondary outcome measures were also comparable between both groups post-intervention (all p > 0.05). Conclusion: A two-session self-administered acupressure training was acceptable to and feasible in participants with KOA. Purpose: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the second leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. Sleep problems are common in HCC patients and may be attributable to disturbances in the circadian rhythm. Research into the role of circadian rhythms in sleep quality among HCC patients is lacking, however. This study investigated the relationship between the diurnal cortisol profile and sleep quality among HCC patients. We aimed to identify alterations in the diurnal cortisol profile in patients with HCC compared to healthy controls and investigate whether they were associated with poor sleep quality among HCC patients. Methods: Participants comprised 75 HCC patients and 33 healthy individuals. The Taiwanese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-T) was administered to assess sleep quality. Saliva samples were collected on 3 consecutive days at five time points daily to measure diurnal cortisol levels. Results: In the HCC group, 89.3% of individuals were poor sleepers (PSQI-T > 5), whereas among healthy individuals, 30.3% were poor sleepers. While the healthy participants' diurnal cortisol profile followed a typical pattern that peaked 30 min after waking and declined gradually throughout the day, the cortisol level in the HCC patients rebounded at bedtime. Higher cortisol levels were marginally correlated with poor sleep quality (OR = 1.00007, p <.05). Conclusions: Our study suggests a potential association between disturbed circadian rhythm and poor sleep quality in HCC patients. Background: No study has compared the effects of hemodialysis on the symptom burden of terminally ill and nonterminally ill end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effects of hemodialysis on the symptom burden of ESRD patients and compare the terminally ill and nonterminally ill groups. Design: This was a quantitative survey; for patients on hemodialysis, the survey was conducted at the beginning and end of the weekly cycle of hemodialysis sessions. Setting/Subjects: A total of 211 ESRD patients were recruited in Taiwan, 47 of which were terminally ill (38 on hemodialysis) and 164 nonterminally ill (110 on hemodialysis). Measurements: Symptom burden was assessed using the Taiwanese version of the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory for kidney disease. Results: Being terminally ill predicted higher symptom severity (B = 0.604, p = 0.017), whereas hemodialysis predicted lower symptom severity (B = −0.614, p = 0.014) in ESRD patients. Nonterminally ill patients who were married or on hemodialysis experienced lower symptom severity (B = −0.604, p = 0.013 and B = −0.665, p = 0.017, respectively). Among terminally ill patients, neither hemodialysis nor other background characteristics predicted symptom severity. When hemodialysis was initiated, no change in symptom severity was observed in terminally ill and nonterminally ill patients. Conclusions: The effects of hemodialysis on symptom burden were different between ESRD patients with different disease states. Hemodialysis predicted lower symptom severity only in nonterminally ill ESRD patients. The article presents a study on the experience and dynamics of intimate partner violence (IPV) of two older Chinese women. Results reveal that IPV in general and physical violence in particular do not necessarily decrease as offenders or victims enter old age, that IPV may be of a non-physical nature, and that the occasional violence performed by a partner may not worsen over time.

eHealth has become popular worldwide, and it is transforming health care. However, studies examining the use of eHealth applications in the Chinese population are scarce. The study reports on the characteristics of eHealth applications in Hong Kong information and communication technology (ICT) users, their attitudes towards eHealth, and their reasons for not using eHealth applications. A cross-sectional random-digit dialing survey targeting adults using ICT was conducted in Hong Kong to elicit information on respondents' use of and attitudes towards eHealth. A total of 495 ICT users completed the survey, of whom 353 (71.3%) were eHealth users. A smartphone was the most frequent way of performing eHealth activities (71.7%). The most prevalent eHealth activity was reading about health/illness (86.4%), with 93.5% indicating that eHealth applications improved their understanding of health care issues. People with less education were less likely to use eHealth applications. Non-eHealth users indicated that the main reasons for not using eHealth applications were lack of interest in health information (49.3%) and lack of confidence in the reliability of online information (45.1%). Quality monitoring of health information available on ICTs and tailoring the design and readability are recommended to meet the needs of those seeking health resources and to promote eHealth. Evidence from the study demonstrates the potential of eHealth to improve the dissemination of health information in Hong Kong, and it provides a basis for improving eHealth integration. A Qigong App was designed to promote a more flexible mode of delivering qigong training than face-to-face, with which individuals can access to this mind-body aerobic exercise more readily. The objective of the study was to examine the usability and acceptance of the App. Target participants were Cantonese- or Putonghua-speaking adults and owned a smartphone. First we conducted a pilot trial with 14 participants to examine the navigation feature of the App, followed by a main test. In the main test, another 100 participants reviewed the Qigong App and filled in a questionnaire on usability (System Usability Scale) and user acceptance (i.e., attitude, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, intention to use, and satisfaction), of which 89 completed the same questionnaire in a two-week interval. Qualitative feedback yielded from the pilot trial was summarized, and descriptive statistics, t-tests, and linear regressions were used in quantitative data analysis of the main test. The mean composite usability score in the main test was satisfactory (77.62 out of 100). Descriptive analyses showed that the majority of users found the Qigong App pleasant, user friendly, and useful for learning qigong. Participants indicated positive ratings for the items assessing usability and acceptance of the App. Regression results showed that certain characteristics predicted the ratings for some items, e.g., age as a predictor of scores of usability and perceived ease of use. The study provided researchers and practitioners with evidence of the usability and acceptance of an alternative qigong training mode that can enhance participants’ access and motivation to practice qigong. Background: Distinctions have been made between the two main forms of intimate partner violence: intimate terrorism (IT) and situational couple violence (SCV), depending on whether the violence is part of a general pattern of control. Differential effects also exist between IT and SCV. However, the IT/SCV distinction and their differential effects have yet to be demonstrated in violent intimate relationships in China. We aimed to identify IT and SCV among Chinese women who reported partner violence in Hong Kong and to differentiate the effects of IT and SCV on their mental health outcomes.Methods: A mixed-method design was used in a cross-sectional study to collect quantitative and qualitative data from women 18 years of age or older who had been victims of intimate partner violence in the past year. Six hundred and thirteen women were recruited from 18 districts in Hong Kong. Quantitative instruments were administered to assess intimate partner violence, control by an intimate partner, and mental health outcomes. Individual face-to-face interviews were conducted with 200 of the women to capture their experiences of intimate partner violence and the context in which it occurred.Results: Of the 613 women, 215 (35.1%) were identified as victims of IT and 324 (52.9%) as victims of SCV. Compared to SCV victims, IT victims reported significantly more violence-related physical injury (p < 0.001), higher use of medical services (p < 0.001), and more symptoms of depression (p < 0.001) and posttraumatic stress disorder (p < 0.001). The interviews revealed two broadly different pictures with IT victims describing their relationship problems as serious and life-threatening, and physical violence was part of the controlling behaviors used by their partners. Such details were not reported by those in the SCV group.Conclusion: Our findings indicate that violence in intimate relationships in China is not a unitary phenomenon, and it has at least two forms, IT and SCV, which were shown to have differential effects on Chinese women. Background: Although intimate partner sexual aggression has been shown to be associated with adverse mental health outcomes, there is scant information about sexual aggression in Chinese intimate relationships in general and about its mental health impact in particular. This article aimed to investigate sexual aggression in Chinese intimate relationships, including the use of force or threat of force and non-physical coercive tactics in unwanted sex.Methods: The quantitative and qualitative data used in this paper were drawn from a prospective cohort study conducted in Hong Kong between September 2010 and September 2012. A total of 745 Chinese women aged 18 or older who had been in an intimate relationship in the preceding 12 months were recruited from sites in all districts of Hong Kong. Multiple logistic regression analysis, ordinary linear regression, and t-tests were used in quantitative analysis. Directed content analysis was used to analyze the transcripts of 59 women who revealed experiences of intimate partner sexual aggression in individual in-depth interviews.Results: Of the 745 Chinese women in the study, 348 (46.7%) had experienced intimate partner physical violence in the past year, and 179 (24%) had experienced intimate partner physical violence and sexual aggression in the past year. Intimate partner sexual aggression significantly predicted PTSD and depressive symptoms after controlling for intimate partner physical violence. Among the 179 women reporting intimate partner physical violence and sexual coercion in the past year, 75 indicated that their partners used force or threat of force to make them have sex, and 104 of them reported that they gave in to sex because of non-physical coercive tactics used by their partners. Qualitative data revealed a variety of non-physical coercive tactics with different degrees of subtlety used to coerce women into unwanted sex with their partners. Chinese women experiencing physically forced sex had significantly more depressive symptoms and PTSD symptoms.Conclusions: Our findings indicate that sexual aggression in Chinese intimate relationships has specific mental health consequences over and above those associated with physical violence.
