Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) is an oncogenic virus associated with various malignancies, including classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL). Despite its known association, the specific role of humoral immune response to EBV remains poorly characterized in cHL. To address this, we conducted a study using a custom protein microarray to measure the antibody responses in cHL patients and matched healthy controls recruited from an East‐Asian hospital‐based case–control study. We identified 16 IgG antibodies significantly elevated in EBV‐positive cHL compared with controls, defining an "East‐Asian antibody signature of EBV‐positive cHL." We evaluated responses against these 16 antibodies in a distinct European population, leveraging data from our previous European cHL case–control study from the UK, Denmark, and Sweden. A subset of antibodies (14/16, 87.5%) from the "East‐Asian antibody signature of EBV‐positive cHL" exhibited significant associations with cHL in the European population. Conversely, we assessed the "European antibody signature of EBV‐positive cHL" identified in our prior study which consisted of 18 EBV antibodies (2 IgA, 16 IgG), in the East‐Asian population. A subset of these antibodies (15/18, 83.3%) maintained significant associations with cHL in the East‐Asian population. This cross‐comparison of antibody signatures underscores the robust generalizability of EBV antibodies across populations. Five anti‐EBV IgG antibodies (LMP‐1, TK, BALF2, BDLF3, and BBLF1), found in both population‐specific antibody signatures, represent a "core signature of EBV‐positive cHL." Our findings suggest that the antibody responses targeting these core EBV proteins reflect a specific EBV gene expression pattern, serving as potential biomarkers for EBV‐positive cHL independent of population‐specific factors. Background Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the receptor for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is highly expressed in the kidneys. Beyond serving as a crucial endogenous regulator of the renin–angiotensin system, ACE2 also possess a unique function to facilitate amino acid absorption. Our observational study sought to explore the relationship between urine ACE2 (uACE2) and renal outcomes in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods In a cohort of 104 patients with COVID-19 without acute kidney injury (AKI), 43 patients with COVID-19-mediated AKI and 36 non-COVID-19 controls, we measured uACE2, urine tumour necrosis factor receptors I and II (uTNF-RI and uTNF-RII) and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (uNGAL). We also assessed ACE2 staining in autopsy kidney samples and generated a propensity score–matched subgroup of patients to perform a targeted urine metabolomic study to describe the characteristic signature of COVID-19. Results uACE2 is increased in patients with COVID-19 and further increased in those that developed AKI. After adjusting uACE2 levels for age, sex and previous comorbidities, increased uACE2 was independently associated with a >3-fold higher risk of developing AKI [odds ratio 3.05 (95% confidence interval 1.23‒7.58), P  = .017]. Increased uACE2 corresponded to a tubular loss of ACE2 in kidney sections and strongly correlated with uTNF-RI and uTNF-RII. Urine quantitative metabolome analysis revealed an increased excretion of essential amino acids in patients with COVID-19, including leucine, isoleucine, tryptophan and phenylalanine. Additionally, a strong correlation was observed between urine amino acids and uACE2. Conclusions Elevated uACE2 is related to AKI in patients with COVID-19. Non‐Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is composed of a heterogeneous collection of subtypes with considerable differences in genetics, biology and aetiology. Studies to date on physical activity and NHL risk have not had sufficient sample size to evaluate whether associations differ by subtype. We pooled data from nine case‐control studies to examine the association between moderate‐to‐vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) and risk of NHL overall and by subtype (diffuse large B‐cell lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma, marginal zone lymphoma and mature T‐cell lymphoma). A total of 5653 cases and 9115 controls were included in the pooled analysis. Physical activity was harmonised across nine studies and modelled as study‐specific tertiles. Multinomial logistic regression was used to estimate the association between physical activity and NHL, adjusting for confounders. The overall odds of NHL was 13% lower among participants in the most active tertile of MVPA compared to the least active tertile (adjusted odds ratio = 0.87, 95% CI = 0.80, 0.95). Similar decreases were observed across NHL subtypes. Simple Summary: There is a growing need to clarify the effect of modifiable lifestyle factors such as obesity on outcomes of multiple myeloma (MM). In this paper, we examined the associations between body mass index (BMI) at different periods of life up to the time of diagnosis and overall survival among patients newly diagnosed with multiple myeloma. The key findings are that BMIs before and at the time of diagnosis were not associated with overall survival in MM, except that a higher BMI at diagnosis was associated with a better overall survival for females, irrespective of race/ethnicity. This is the first evidence that the BMI-survival association may differ by sex. Obesity is associated with survival in several solid tumors and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, but its impact on multiple myeloma (MM) survival is unclear. We examined the associations between body mass index (BMI) at different periods of life up to the time of diagnosis and overall survival (OS) among 563 patients newly diagnosed with MM in 2010–2019. BMI at diagnosis was calculated using measured height and weight from electronic medical records (EMR). BMIs at age 20, maximum during adulthood, and 5 years before diagnosis were calculated using self-reported weights and measured height from EMR. Over a median follow-up of 49.3 months, 191 (33.93%) deaths were identified. We used multivariable Cox proportional-hazards models to examine the associations between BMIs and OS. Height as well as BMI before and at diagnosis was not associated with OS, but there is a U-shape association between weight and OS. Higher BMIs at diagnosis were associated with better OS among females (HR = 0.39 [0.22–0.71]), irrespective of race. In conclusion, our results suggest that BMI at different periods of life up to the time of diagnosis may not be associated with OS in MM, except that a higher BMI at diagnosis was associated with superior OS for females. Multiple myeloma (MM) and its precursors monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and smoldering myeloma (SMM) are 2–3 times more common in African Americans (AA) than European Americans (EA). Although epigenetic changes are well recognized in the context of myeloma cell biology, the contribution of 5-hydroxymethylcytosines (5hmC) to racial disparities in MM is unknown. Using the 5hmC-Seal and next-generation sequencing, we profiled genome-wide 5hmC in circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) from 342 newly diagnosed patients with MM (n = 294), SMM (n = 18), and MGUS (n = 30). We compared differential 5hmC modifications between MM and its precursors among 227 EA and 115 AA patients. The captured 5hmC modifications in cfDNA were found to be enriched in B-cell and T-cell-derived histone modifications marking enhancers. Of the top 500 gene bodies with differential 5hmC levels between MM and SMM/MGUS, the majority (94.8%) were distinct between EA and AA and enriched with population-specific pathways, including amino acid metabolism in AA and mainly cancer-related signaling pathways in EA. These findings improved our understanding of the epigenetic contribution to racial disparities in MM and suggest epigenetic pathways that could be exploited as novel preventive strategies in high-risk populations. Background: The incidence of follicular lymphoma (FL) in Taiwan has not been well investigated since its inclusion as a histological subtype in the Taiwan Cancer Registry in 2008. The purpose of this study was to describe the incidence patterns of FL in Taiwan and compare the trends with those in other racial groups in the United States. Materials and methods: We conducted an epidemiological study using population-based data from the Taiwan Cancer Registry, Ministry of Health and Welfare, and the 18 Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registries to evaluate the FL incidence from 2008 to 2017. We calculated the annual percent change (APC) to describe the trends in the incidence of FL in subpopulations defined by race and sex over time. Results: The annual age-adjusted incidence rate of FL in Taiwan increased significantly from 0.59 per 100,000 persons in 2008 to 0.82 per 100,000 persons in 2017, with an APC of 3.2. By contrast, the incidence rate in whites in the United States during the same period decreased from 3.42 to 2.74 per 100,000 persons, with an APC of −2.1. We found no significant change for the blacks (APC, −1.5%), Hispanics (APC, −0.7%), and Asians or Pacific Islanders (APC, +0.7%). The temporal trend was similar between the males and females. The relative frequency of FL among the incident non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) cases also increased significantly in Taiwan from 7.64% in 2008 to 11.11% in 2017 (APC = 3.8). The relative frequency of FL among the incident NHL cases in the whites decreased from 2008 to 2012 (APC, −3.8%) and then stabilized after 2012 (APC, −0.2%). By contrast, little change in relative frequency of FL among the incident NHL cases was observed in the blacks, Hispanics, and APIs between 2008 and 2017. Conclusion: We found increases in the incidence of FL and the relative frequency of FL among the incident NHL cases in both males and females in Taiwan from 2008 to 2017. Background: Physical limitations prior to cancer diagnosis may lead to suboptimal health outcomes. Our objective was to evaluate the impacts of poor physical health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and physical functioning (PF) on the risk of contralateral breast cancer (CBC). Methods: We performed a nested case–control study of women with invasive unilateral breast cancer (UBC) who did not receive prophylactic contralateral mastectomy using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Medicare Health Outcomes Survey data resource. Among 2938 women aged ≥ 65 years diagnosed with first stage I–III UBC between 1997 and 2011, we identified 100 subsequent CBC cases and 915 matched controls without CBC using incidence density sampling without replacement. Pre-diagnosis physical HRQOL and PF were determined using Medical Outcomes Trust Short Form-36 (SF-36)/Veterans Rand 12-Item Health Survey (VR-12) responses within 2 years prior to first UBC diagnosis. We estimated adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) using conditional logistic regression models. Results: Cases and controls were similar with respect to comorbidities, stage, surgery, and radiation treatments, but differed by hormone receptor status (ER/PR-negative, 23% and 11%, respectively) of first UBC. Cases had modestly lower mean pre-diagnosis physical HRQOL (− 1.8) and PF (− 2.2) scores. In multivariable models, we observed an increased CBC risk associated with low physical HRQOL (lowest vs. highest quartile, OR = 1.8; 95% CI 0.8–4.3), but CIs included 1.0. Low PF was associated with a 2.7-fold (95% CI 1.1–6.7) increased CBC risk. Conclusions: Findings indicate that low physical HRQOL, specifically poor PF, is associated with CBC risk. Extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (NKTCL) is an aggressive malignancy that has been etiologically linked to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, with EBV gene transcripts identified in almost all cases. However, the humoral immune response to EBV in NKTCL patients has not been well characterized. We examined the antibody response to EBV in plasma samples from 51 NKTCL cases and 154 controls from Hong Kong and Taiwan who were part of the multi-center, hospital-based AsiaLymph case–control study. The EBV-directed serological response was characterized using a protein microarray that measured IgG and IgA antibodies against 202 protein sequences representing the entire EBV proteome. We analyzed 157 IgG antibodies and 127 IgA antibodies that fulfilled quality control requirements. Associations between EBV serology and NKTCL status were disproportionately observed for IgG rather than IgA antibodies. Nine anti-EBV IgG responses were significantly elevated in NKTCL cases compared with controls and had ORshighest vs. lowest tertile > 6.0 (Bonferroni-corrected P-values < 0.05). Among these nine elevated IgG responses in NKTCL patients, three IgG antibodies (all targeting EBNA3A) are novel and have not been observed for other EBV-associated tumors of B-cell or epithelial origin. IgG antibodies against EBNA1, which have consistently been elevated in other EBV-associated tumors, were not elevated in NKTCL cases. We characterize the antibody response against EBV for patients with NKTCL and identify IgG antibody responses against six distinct EBV proteins. Purpose: Frailty is assessed when making treatment decisions among older women with breast cancer (BC), which in turn impacts survival. We evaluated associations between pre-diagnosis frailty and risks of BC-specific and all-cause mortality in older women. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of Medicare beneficiaries ages ≥ 65 years with stage I–III BC using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results-Medicare Health Outcome Survey Data Resource. Frailty was measured using the deficit-accumulation frailty index, categorized as robust, pre-frail, or frail, at baseline and during follow-up. Fine and Gray competing risk and Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate subdistribution hazard ratios (SHR) and hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for BC-specific and all-cause mortality, respectively. Results: Among 2411 women with a median age of 75 years at BC diagnosis, 49.5% were categorized as robust, 29.4% were pre-frail and 21.1% were frail. Fewer frail women compared to robust women received breast-conserving surgery (52.8% vs. 61.5%, frail vs. robust, respectively) and radiation (43.5% vs. 51.8%). In multivariable analyses, degree of frailty was not associated with BC-specific mortality (frail vs robust SHR 1.47, 95% CI 0.97–2.24). However, frail women with BC had higher risks of all-cause mortality compared to robust women with BC (HR 2.32, 95% CI 1.84–2.92). Conclusion: Among a cohort of older women with BC, higher degrees of frailty were associated with higher risk of all-cause mortality, but not BC-specific mortality. Background: Granulocyte colony-stimulating factors (G-CSFs), which are used for the prevention of complications from chemotherapy-related neutropenia, are linked to the risk of developing second primary myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The objective of this study was to examine the correlation between using a specific G-CSF agent and the risk of MDS/AML among older patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL).Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of adults aged >65 years who were diagnosed with first primary NHL between 2001 and 2011. With data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare-linked database, adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated for the risk of MDS/AML associated with the receipt of G-CSF(filgrastim and pegfilgrastim) in Cox proportional-hazards models, which were stratified according to treatment accounting for confounding by indication.Results: Among 18,245 patients with NHL patients who had a median follow-up of 3.5 years, 56% received chemotherapy and/or immunotherapy, and G-CSF was most commonly used in those who received rituximab plus multiple chemotherapy regimens (77%). Subsequent MDS/AML diagnoses were identified in 666 patients (3.7%). A modest increased risk of MDS/AML was observed with the receipt of G-CSF (HR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.01-1.62) and a trend was observed with increasing doses (Ptrend < .01). When specific agents were analyzed, an increased risk of MDS/AML was consistently observed with filgrastim (≥10 doses: HR, 1.67; 95% CI, 1.25-2.23), but not with pegfilgrastim (≥10 + doses: HR, 1.11; 95% CI, 0.84-1.45).Conclusions: A higher of MDS/AML was observed in patients with NHL risk among those who received G-CSF that was specific to the use of filgrastim (≥10 doses), but not pegfilgrastim. Neutropenia prophylaxis is an essential component of highly effective NHL treatment regimens. The differential risk related to the types of G-CSF agents used warrants further study given their increasing use and newly available, US Food and Drug Administration-approved, biosimilar products. PURPOSE Intravenous (IV) bisphosphonates reduce the risk of skeletal-related events in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). However, data describing racial differences in IV bisphosphonate utilization outside of clinical trial settings are limited. We evaluated population-level IV bisphosphonate initiation and discontinuation among patients of age ≥ 65 years with MM. METHODS We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients of age ≥ 65 years diagnosed with first primary MM between 2001 and 2011. Patients were identified using the SEER-Medicare linked database and followed through December 2013. Cumulative incidences of IV bisphosphonate initiation and time to discontinuation among users were compared between racial and ethnic groups. In Fine and Gray competing risk models, we estimated subdistribution hazard ratios (SHRs) and 95% CIs for initiation and discontinuation. RESULTS We included 14,231 eligible patients with MM (median age, 76 years; 52% male). Over a median follow-up of 23.1 months, 54% of patients received at least one IV bisphosphonate dose. Our final analytical sample included 10,456 non-Hispanic (NH) Whites, 2,267 NH Blacks, 548 Asian and Pacific islanders, and 815 Hispanic and Latino patients. A higher proportion of White patients (56.1%) newly received IV bisphosphonates after MM diagnosis compared with NH Blacks (45.4%). Compared with White patients, NH Black patients were less likely to initiate IV bisphosphonates (SHR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.70 to 0.79) and slightly more likely to discontinue treatment (SHR, 1.10; 95% CI, 1.01 to 1.19). CONCLUSION Approximately half of the patients with MM of age ≥ 65 years did not receive IV bisphosphonates, with significant delay among racial minority groups. Purpose: To examine the impact of pre-diagnosis depressive symptoms and mental health-related quality of life (HRQOL) on survival among older patients with multiple myeloma (MM).Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare Health Outcomes Survey data resource. Patients aged 65 years and older diagnosed with first primary MM between 1998 and 2014 were identified, and presence of depressive symptoms was determined based on responses to 3 depression screening questions prior to MM diagnosis. Veterans RAND 12 mental component summary (MCS) scores were analyzed to evaluate mental HRQOL. We used multivariable Cox proportional hazards models to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for risks of all-cause and cancer-specific mortality.Results: Of 522 patients, mean (SD) age at diagnosis was 76.9 (6.1) years and 158 (30%) reported depressive symptoms. Patients with depressive symptoms had a higher number of comorbid conditions and nearly all (84%) scored below the median MCS. Pre-diagnosis depressive symptoms were not associated with all-cause (HR = 1.01, 95% CI 0.79-1.29) or cancer-specific mortality (HR = 0.94, 95% CI 0.69-1.28). MM patients scoring in the second MCS tertile (vs the highest tertile) had a modestly increased risk of all-cause (HR = 1.19, 95% CI 0.91-1.55) and cancer-specific mortality (HR = 1.17, 95% CI 0.86-1.60), but these estimates were not statistically significant.Conclusion: Pre-diagnosis depressive symptoms and lower mental HRQoL did not impact survival among older MM patients. Several commonly used immune‐suppressing biologic drugs target proteins and cytokines involved in myeloma pathogenesis. Our objective was to determine whether targeted biologic disease‐modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) are associated with risk of multiple myeloma (MM). We conducted a nested case–control study within a retrospective cohort of 56,886 commercially insured adults undergoing treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis between 2009 and 2015 using the Truven Health MarketScan Databases. MM cases (n = 287) were matched to up to 10 controls (n = 2,760) on age, sex and rheumatologic indication using incidence density sampling without replacement. Our exposures of interest were biologic DMARDs targeting tumor necrosis factor‐alpha, interleukin 6, cytotoxic t‐lymphocyte‐associated protein‐4 and depletion of B cells. Relative risks were estimated as adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) using conditional logistic regression models. Cases and controls were similar with respect to use of prescription NSAIDs and concurrent conventional‐synthetic DMARDs. Cases had slightly fewer etanercept users (4% vs. 7%) and slightly more tocilizumab users (1.4% vs. 0.4%). Compared to patients treated with only conventional‐synthetic DMARDs, those receiving concomitant conventional‐synthetic plus biologic DMARDs had lower risk of developing MM (OR = 0.48; 95% CI 0.30–0.88; p = 0.02). Risks differed by drug target with an inverse association observed with use of etanercept inhibiting tumor necrosis factor‐alpha (OR = 0.55; 95% CI 0.30–1.02; p = 0.06) and a positive association with tocilizumab inhibiting interleukin‐6 (OR = 4.33; 95% CI 1.33–14.19; p = 0.02) compared to biologic DMARD‐naïve patients. Further investigation is warranted to understand the roles of drugs suppressing tumor necrosis factor‐alpha and interleukin‐6 in myeloma pathogenesis. What's new? Biologic disease‐modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) reduce inflammation and slow the progression of rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune conditions. In exerting these effects, DMARDs target proteins that are associated with the pathogenesis of multiple myeloma (MM). This retrospective cohort study shows that, compared to conventional synthetic DMARDs only, concomitant use of synthetic and biologic DMARDs is inversely associated with MM risk. However, observed associations differed by drug targets. Namely, the biologic DMARD etanercept, which inhibits tumor necrosis factor‐alpha, was inversely associated with MM, while tocilizumab, which blocks interleukin‐6, was positively associated with MM. Purpose: Patient-reported outcomes such as self-reported health (SRH) are important in understanding quality cancer care, yet little is known about links between SRH and outcomes in older patients with multiple myeloma (MM). We evaluated associations between SRH and mortality among older patients with MM.Methods: We analyzed a retrospective cohort of patients ages ≥ 65 years diagnosed with first primary MM using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-Medicare Health Outcomes Survey (MHOS) data resource. Pre-diagnosis SRH was grouped as high (excellent/very good/good) or low (fair/poor). We used Cox proportional hazards models to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for associations between SRH and all-cause and MM-specific mortality.Results: Of 521 MM patients with mean (SD) age at diagnosis of 76.8 (6.1) years, 32% reported low SRH. In multivariable analyses, low SRH was suggestive of modest increased risks of all-cause mortality (HR 1.32, 95% CI 1.02-1.71) and MM-specific mortality (HR 1.22, 95% CI 0.87-1.70) compared to high SRH.Conclusion: Findings suggest that low pre-diagnosis SRH is highly prevalent among older patients with MM and is associated with modestly increased all-cause mortality. Purpose: To conduct a pooled analysis assessing the association of blood transfusion with risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL).Methods: We used harmonized data from 13 case-control studies (10,805 cases, 14,026 controls) in the InterLymph Consortium. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using unconditional logistic regression, adjusted for study design variables.Results: Among non-Hispanic whites (NHW), history of any transfusion was inversely associated with NHL risk for men (OR 0.74; 95% CI 0.65-0.83) but not women (OR 0.92; 95% CI 0.83-1.03), pheterogeneity = 0.014. Transfusion history was not associated with risk in other racial/ethnic groups. There was no trend with the number of transfusions, time since first transfusion, age at first transfusion, or decade of first transfusion, and further adjustment for socioeconomic status, body mass index, smoking, alcohol use, and HCV seropositivity did not alter the results. Associations for NHW men were stronger in hospital-based (OR 0.56; 95% CI 0.45-0.70) but still apparent in population-based (OR 0.84; 95% CI 0.72-0.98) studies.Conclusions: In the setting of a literature reporting mainly null and some positive associations, and the lack of a clear methodologic explanation for our inverse association restricted to NHW men, the current body of evidence suggests that there is no association of blood transfusion with risk of NHL. Objectives: To investigate the association between occupational exposure to aromatic hydrocarbon solvents and risk of multiple myeloma (MM) in a large, consortium-based study.Methods: We pooled data on 2854 cases and 10 743 controls from nine studies participating in the InterLymph consortium. Occupational exposures to benzene, toluene and xylene were assigned by a job-exposure matrix, coupled with 'correction' of exposure probability by self-reported or expert-assessed exposure from the individual studies. Cumulative intensity was calculated as the job-specific exposure intensity multiplied by job duration, summed across jobs. Associations were estimated using logistic regression, with inclusion of covariates for study matching factors and other potential confounders. We repeated our main analysis using random-effects meta-analysis to evaluate heterogeneity of effect.Results: Benzene, toluene and xylene were each associated with MM. For the three solvents, the highest quartile of high-probability cumulative intensity exposure (vs unexposed) was associated with 42% to 63% increased risks of MM. Associations with toluene and xylene exposures were fairly consistent and robust to sensitivity analyses. The estimated effect for benzene was moderately heterogeneous between the studies. Each solvent's association with MM was stronger for exposure occurring within 20 years of diagnosis than with exposure lagged by more than 20 years.Conclusions: Our study adds important evidence for a role of aromatic hydrocarbon solvents in causation of MM. The difficulty in disentangling individual compounds in this group and a lack of data on potential carcinogenicity of toluene and xylene, in widespread current use, underscore a need for further epidemiological evaluation. Based on limited evidence, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a black box warning for the use of tumor necrosis factor‐alpha inhibitors (TNFIs) and risk of non‐Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Our objective was to determine the risk of NHL associated with TNFI use by duration and type of anti‐TNF agent. We performed a nested case‐control study within a retrospective cohort of adults with rheumatologic conditions from a U.S. commercial health insurance database between 2009 and 2015. Use of TNFIs (infliximab, adalimumab, etanercept, golimumab and certolizumab pegol) and conventional‐synthetic disease‐modifying antirheumatic drugs (csDMARDs) was identified, and conditional logistic regression models were used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for risk of NHL. From a retrospective cohort of 55,446 adult patients, 101 NHL cases and 984 controls matched on age, gender and rheumatologic indication were included. Compared to controls, NHL cases had greater TNFI use (33% vs. 20%) but were similar in csDMARD use (70% vs. 71%). TNFI ever‐use was associated with nearly two‐fold increased risk of NHL (OR = 1.93; 95% CI: 1.16–3.20) with suggestion of increasing risk with duration (P‐trend = 0.05). TNF fusion protein (etanercept) was associated with increased NHL risk (OR = 2.73; 95% CI: 1.40–5.33), whereas risk with anti‐TNF monoclonal antibodies was not statistically significant (OR = 1.77; 95% CI: 0.87–3.58). In sensitivity analyses evaluating confounding by rheumatologic disease severity, channeling bias was not likely to account for our results. Our findings support the FDA black box warning for NHL. Objective: As factors that alter the immune system have been implicated in non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) etiology, it is of interest to explore the association between vaccination and risk of NHL. Results of few epidemiologic studies conducted thus far are inconsistent, and only one has examined the association by histologic subtype.Subjects: A population-based, case-control study of 387 patients with NHL and 535 controls conducted in Nebraska between 1999 and 2002.Methods: Information on vaccination for tetanus, polio, influenza, smallpox, and tuberculosis, as well as important environmental factors, was collected by telephone interview. Risk was estimated by odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), adjusting for confounders.Results: We found that NHL risk was inversely associated with ever receiving a polio (OR = 0.59, CI = 0.40-0.87) or smallpox (OR = 0.71, CI = 0.51-0.98) vaccination, and positively associated with influenza vaccination (OR = 1.53, CI = 1.14-2.06). No significant association was found for tetanus or tuberculosis vaccination. The patterns of association were similar between men and women. Analysis by histologic subtypes showed that polio vaccination was associated with a lower risk of follicular (OR = 0.54, CI = 0.31-0.92) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphomas (OR = 0.29, CI = 0.12-0.69) and smallpox vaccination was associated with a lower risk of marginal zone lymphoma (OR = 0.41, CI = 0.19-0.88). In contrast, ever receiving an influenza vaccination was associated with a higher risk of follicular (OR = 1.98, CI = 1.23-3.18) and diffuse large B cell lymphomas (OR = 1.88, CI = 1.13-3.12).Conclusion: Risk of NHL is inversely associated with polio and smallpox vaccination and positively associated with influenza vaccination. The use of radiation therapy (RT) and its impact on survival in advanced Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is controversial. Data were obtained from the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results (SEER) registries from 1988–2011. There were 9467 adults who met inclusion criteria; 19% received RT. Radiation use declined from 25% in 1988 to 16% in 2011. Five-year overall survival (OS) for stage III and IV patients for the no versus RT cohorts were 79% versus 88% (p < 0.0001) and 73% versus 84% (p < 0.0001), respectively. RT was associated with improved OS (HR = 0.76; 0.68–0.85) on multivariable analysis and in patients diagnosed after 2000. Family clusters of multiple myeloma ( MM) suggest disease heritability. Nevertheless, patterns of inheritance and the importance of genetic versus environmental risk factors in MM aetiology remain unclear. We pooled data from eleven case-control studies from the International Multiple Myeloma Consortium to characterize the association of MM risk with having a first-degree relative with a history of a lympho-haematapoietic cancer. Unconditional logistic regression models, adjusted for study, sex, age and education level, were used to estimate associations between MM risk and having a first-degree relative with a history of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, leukaemia or MM. Sex, African American race/ethnicity and age were explored as effect modifiers. A total of 2843 cases and 11 470 controls were included. MM risk was elevated in association with having a first-degree relative with any lympho-haematapoietic cancer (Odds Ratio (OR) = 1·29, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1·08-1·55). The association was particularly strong for having a first-degree relative with MM (OR = 1·90, 95% CI: 1·26-2·87), especially among men (OR = 4·13, 95% CI: 2·17-7·85) and African Americans (OR = 5·52, 95% CI: 1·87-16·27).These results support the hypothesis that genetic inheritance plays a role in MM aetiology. Objective: In community-based epidemiological studies, job- and industry-specific 'modules' are often used to systematically obtain details about the subject's work tasks. The module assignment is often made by the interviewer, who may have insufficient occupational hygiene knowledge to assign the correct module. We evaluated, in the context of a case-control study of lymphoid neoplasms in Asia ( AsiaLymph'), the performance of an algorithm that provided automatic, real-time module assignment during a computer-assisted personal interview. Methods: AsiaLymph's occupational component began with a lifetime occupational history questionnaire with free-text responses and three solvent exposure screening questions. To assign each job to one of 23 study-specific modules, an algorithm automatically searched the free-text responses to the questions 'job title' and 'product made or services provided by employer' using a list of module-specific keywords, comprising over 5800 keywords in English, Traditional and Simplified Chinese. Hierarchical decision rules were used when the keyword match triggered multiple modules. If no keyword match was identified, a generic solvent module was assigned if the subject responded 'yes' to any of the three solvent screening questions. If these question responses were all 'no', a work location module was assigned, which redirected the subject to the farming, teaching, health professional, solvent, or industry solvent modules or ended the questions for that job, depending on the location response. We conducted a reliability assessment that compared the algorithm-assigned modules to consensus module assignments made by two industrial hygienists for a subset of 1251 (of 11409) jobs selected using a stratified random selection procedure using module-specific strata. Discordant assignments between the algorithm and consensus assignments (483 jobs) were qualitatively reviewed by the hygienists to evaluate the potential information lost from missed questions with using the algorithm-assigned module (none, low, medium, high). Results: The most frequently assigned modules were the work location (33%), solvent (20%), farming and food industry (19%), and dry cleaning and textile industry (6.4%) modules. In the reliability subset, the algorithm assignment had an exact match to the expert consensus-assigned module for 722 (57.7%) of the 1251 jobs. Overall, adjusted for the proportion of jobs in each stratum, we estimated that 86% of the algorithm-assigned modules would result in no information loss, 2% would have low information loss, and 12% would have medium to high information loss. Medium to high information loss occurred for <10% of the jobs assigned the generic solvent module and for 21, 32, and 31% of the jobs assigned the work location module with location responses of 'someplace else', 'factory', and 'don't know', respectively. Other work location responses had <8% with medium to high information loss because of redirections to other modules. Medium to high information loss occurred more frequently when a job description matched with multiple keywords pointing to different modules (29-69%, depending on the triggered assignment rule). Conclusions: These evaluations demonstrated that automatically assigned modules can reliably reproduce an expert's module assignment without the direct involvement of an industrial hygienist or interviewer. BACKGROUND: Various occupations have been associated with an elevated risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), but results have been inconsistent across studies. Objectives: We investigated occupational risk of NHL and of four common NHL subtypes with particular focus on occupations of a priori interest. METHODS: We conducted a pooled analysis of 10,046 cases and 12,025 controls from 10 NHL studies participating in the InterLymph Consortium. We harmonized the occupational coding using the 1968 International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO-1968) and grouped occupations previously associated with NHL into 25 a priori groups. Odds ratios (ORs) adjusted for center, age, and sex were determined for NHL overall and for the following four subtypes: diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), follicular lymphoma (FL), chronic lymphocytic leukemia/ small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL), and peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL). RESULTS: We confirmed previously reported positive associations between NHL and farming occupations [field crop/vegetable farm workers OR = 1.26; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.05, 1.51; general farm workers OR = 1.19; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.37]; we also confirmed associations of NHL with specific occupations such as women's hairdressers (OR = 1.34; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.74), charworkers/cleaners (OR = 1.17; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.36), spray-painters (OR = 2.07; 95% CI: 1.30, 3.29), electrical wiremen (OR = 1.24; 95% CI: 1.00, 1.54), and carpenters (OR = 1.42; 95% CI: 1.04, 1.93). We observed subtype-specific associations for DLBCL and CLL/SLL in women's hairdressers and for DLBCL and PTCL in textile workers. CONCLUSIONS: Our pooled analysis of 10 international studies adds to evidence suggesting that farming, hairdressing, and textile industry-related exposures may contribute to NHL risk. Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is an extremely rare tumor with only 67 cases of head and neck FDCS reported in the literature. A 65-year-old female had a 6-cm follicular dendritic cell sarcoma resected from the left parotid gland with close margins. It recurred 1 year later as a 5-cm mass that was intensely [18F] fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (18F-FDG) avid on positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and was re-excised. A follow-up PET/CT did not show any metastatic disease. The use of 18F-FDG PET/CT in the management of FDCS warrants further research. To analyze racial, ethnic, sex and age disparities in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), we examined population-based overall survival (OS) data from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-13 (1992-2009) across various races/ethnicities over two consecutive 9-year periods: era 1 (1992-2000) and era 2 (2001-2009). We analyzed 28 590 patients (whites: 24 438, blacks: 1954, Hispanics: 1389 and Asians/Pacific Islanders [A/PI]: 809). A higher proportion of whites were aged > 80 years (22% vs. 17% [Hispanics], 16% [blacks], 16% [A/PI]; p < 0.001). Higher socioeconomic status (SES) was also identified for A/PI and whites compared with blacks and Hispanics ( p < 0.001). OS for all patients improved at 5 years (66% vs. 60%, p < 0.0001) and was significant in all races/ethnicities except A/PI. Patients of higher SES had better outcomes than others independent of era, but both SES classes experienced relative improvement in their OS across eras. ObjectiveTo assess the relative validity and reproducibility of the quantitative FFQ used in the Tzu Chi Health Study (TCHS).DesignThe reproducibility was evaluated by comparing the baseline FFQ with the 2-year follow-up FFQ. Median comparison, cross-classification and Spearman correlation with and without energy adjustment and deattenuation for day-to-day variation were assessed.SettingTCHS is a prospective cohort containing a high proportion of true vegetarians and part-time vegetarians (regularly consuming a vegetarian diet without completely avoiding meat).SubjectSubsets of 103, seventy-eight and 1528 TCHS participants were included in the reproducibility, dietary record-validity and biomarker-validity studies, respectively.ResultsCorrelations assessing the reproducibility for repeat administrations of the FFQ were in the range of 0·46–0·65 for macronutrients and 0·35–0·67 for micronutrients; the average same quartile agreement was 40%. The correlation between FFQ and biomarkers was 0·41 for both vitamin B12 and folate. ObjectivePrevious studies examining the role of single foods or nutrients in the aetiology of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) have produced inconsistent findings. Few studies have examined associations for dietary patterns, which may more accurately reflect patterns of consumption and the complexity of dietary intake. The objective of the present study was to examine whether dietary patterns identified by factor analysis were associated with NHL risk.DesignCase–control.SettingPopulation-based sample residing in Nebraska from 1999 to 2002.SubjectsA total of 336 cases and 460 controls.ResultsFactor analysis identified two major dietary patterns: (i) a ‘Meat, Fat and Sweets’ dietary pattern characterized by high intakes of French fries, red meat, processed meat, pizza, salty snacks, sweets and desserts, and sweetened beverages; and (ii) a ‘Fruit, Vegetables and Starch’ dietary pattern characterized by high intakes of vegetables, fruit, fish, and cereals and starches. In multivariable logistic regression models, the ‘Meat, Fat and Sweets’ dietary pattern was associated with an increased risk of overall NHL (ORQ4v.Q1 = 3·6, 95 % CI 1·9, 6·8; Ptrend = 0·0004), follicular lymphoma (ORQ4v.Q1 = 3·1, 95 % CI 1·2, 8·0; Ptrend = 0·01), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (ORQ4v.Q1 = 3·2, 95 % CI 1·1, 9·0; Ptrend = 0·09) and marginal zone lymphoma (ORQ4v.Q1 = 8·2, 95 % CI 1·3, 51·2; Ptrend = 0·05). No association with overall or subtype-specific risk was detected for the ‘Fruit, Vegetables and Starch’ dietary pattern. We conducted a systematic review of grade 3/4 adverse events (AEs) reported in prospective trials enrolling patients with follicular lymphoma (FL) and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) receiving maintenance rituximab (MR). Random-effects models were used to calculate summary estimates and 95% confidence intervals for the proportion of AEs occurring during MR. Differences by induction program, histology, setting and MR schedule were examined by stratified analyses and univariate random-effects meta-regression. Eleven trials met the search criteria, with nine sufficiently reporting AEs during the MR phase. Of 1009 patients receiving MR, the proportion experiencing cumulative grade 3/4 toxicity was 24% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 14-36%). Patients receiving MR every 6 months as four weekly infusions for 2 years had significantly less toxicity compared with those receiving MR every 2 months (10% vs. 28%; p = 0.035). Patients treated with rituximab alone during induction had fewer toxicities compared to those treated with rituximab plus chemotherapy induction (12% vs. 35%; p = 0.031). Myelosuppression and infections were the most common toxicities. Our literature analysis suggests that MR given every 6 months and rituximab alone as induction may be associated with fewer grade 3/4 AEs for patients with FL and MCL; however, assessing the true independent impact of induction regimens and schedule on toxicity will require prospective trials. In a cohort of 301 patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), we examined whether the pre-diagnostic consumption of fruits and vegetables, or of nutrients concentrated in fruits and vegetables, was associated with overall survival (OS). Proportional hazards models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for all-cause mortality. A total of 91 deaths occurred in the patient cohort over a median follow-up period of 8.2 years. No association with OS was detected for a dietary pattern characterized by high intakes of fruits, vegetables and starch; fruit intake; vegetable intake; or nutrient intake in patients diagnosed with overall NHL, follicular lymphoma or diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Higher intakes of carotene-rich vegetables (HR = 0.4 [0.2-1.0]; ptrend = 0.05) and α-carotene (HRT3 vs. T1 = 0.4 [0.2-0.9]; ptrend = 0.03) were associated with better OS among ever smokers. We examined whether smoking prior to non-Hodgkin lymphoma ( NHL) diagnosis was associated with overall survival ( OS) and conducted a meta-analysis to assess the evidence relating pre-diagnosis cigarette smoking with OS. Among 523 NHL patients, worse OS was suggested for greater pre-diagnostic smoking habits when compared to never smokers. In the meta-analysis ( n = 5 patient populations), inferior OS was observed for greater number of cigarettes smoked per day, years of cigarette smoking, and pack-years of cigarette smoking. The inferior survival was more pronounced for follicular than for diffuse large B cell lymphoma. Pre-diagnosis cigarette smoking may adversely impact the survival of NHL patients. Background: Reports of similar age-specific incidence rates and a female-to-male gender disparity by racial/ethnic groups suggests that further consideration of race-specific patterns may confer insight into the possible causes of thyroid cancer or explanations for the increase in incidence. Methods: We used the National Cancer Institute's (NCIs) surveillance, epidemiology, and end results (SEER) program and Joinpoint Regression for cases diagnosed during 1992-2009 to investigate trends and rates of acceleration for papillary thyroid cancer by gender and race/ethnicity. Results: We determined the annual percent change (APC) and found a yearly increase of 7.0 % for papillary thyroid cancer for the most recent APC trend, with an APC of 6.3 and 7.1 % for white males and females, respectively; an APC of 4.3 and 8.4 % for black males and females, respectively; an APC of 4.2 and 6.7 % for Hispanic males and females, respectively; and an APC of 3.4 and 6.4 % in Asian/PI males and females, respectively. The APC projections show the rates of papillary thyroid cancer rising in males, but the patterns are more dramatic in females, with rates of papillary thyroid cancer in females surpassing rates of common cancers and becoming the third most common cancer in women of all ages by 2019. Conclusions: Although the lowest rates of thyroid cancer are observed in blacks, the greatest rate of acceleration is occurring in black females. Our data also show that the rate of papillary thyroid cancer will continue to surpass rates of ovarian cancer, and in white women: it is projected to be more incident than colorectal cancer as well; and in Hispanic and Asian/Pacific Islander women, rates of papillary thyroid cancer are projected to be higher than lung, colorectal, and ovarian cancers in the near future. Although an increased incidence of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) has been reported, age-specific incidence patterns have not been described. Further analyses could inform investigation into the etiology of this disease. We conducted an epidemiologic study using the 13 Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registries to evaluate MCL incidence from 1992 through 2009. We calculated the proportional changes in the incidence of MCL for subpopulations defined by age, race/ethnicity and gender over time and the racial/ethnic and gender disparities. We observed a 130.9% increase in MCL incidence from 1992-1994 to 2005-2009. The increase was strongest for males (199.0%) and for whites (153.0%). The incidence increased 161%, 200%, 398% and 429% from 1992-1994 to 2005-2009 in white men ages 50-59, 60-69, 70-79 and 80+, respectively, whereas the increase in white females was 86%, 82%, 50% and 193% in the corresponding age groups. We observed a male-to-female incidence rate ratio (IRR) of 2.65 and a white-to-black IRR of 2.21. Our analysis confirmed significant increases in MCL, and illustrated that the incidence is increasing more rapidly in elderly persons, particularly in white males. We also identified novel age-specific temporal trends by race/ethnicity and sex. In addition, we found that the gender and white-to-black disparities have grown over time. Although established risk factors such as immunodeficiency and viral infections may be responsible for a portion of cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), the vast majority of cases of NHL remain unexplained. The role of dietary nitrate and nitrite in NHL risk is of interest since they are precursors of N-nitroso compounds, and nitrosoureas have been shown to induce B- and T-cell lymphomas in animal studies. However, few studies have evaluated the potential association between consumption of nitrate and nitrite and NHL by subtype or chromosomal translocation status, and the results of these studies have been inconsistent. We estimated the dietary intake of nitrate and nitrite using a food frequency questionnaire in a population-based, case-control study of 348 cases and 470 controls conducted in Nebraska in 1999-2002. A non-significant excess risk of NHL was found among women who reported an intake of nitrite in the highest quartile compared to the lowest quartile (odds ratio [OR] = 1.6; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.8-2.9), particularly nitrite from animal sources (OR = 1.9; 95% CI: 1.0-3.4). No significant associations were observed for nitrate or nitrite by NHL subtype. Greater consumption of red meat, processed meat and dairy products has been associated with an increased risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) in several previous reports. Phytanic acid, a saturated fatty acid obtained primarily through the consumption of ruminant meat and dairy products, may offer a potential underlying mechanism for these associations. In a population-based case–control study of 336 cases and 460 controls conducted in Nebraska during 1999–2002, we examined whether phytanic acid-containing foods or total phytanic acid intake, estimated from a food frequency questionnaire and the published phytanic acid values of 151 food items, were associated with increased NHL risk. Unconditional logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals for overall NHL and the common NHL histologic subtypes. In multivariable models, higher intakes of density-adjusted beef [ORT3 vs. T1 = 1.5 (1.1–2.2); Ptrend = 0.02], total dairy products [OR = 1.5 (1.1–2.2); Ptrend = 0.02) and milk [OR = 1.6 (1.1–2.3); Ptrend = 0.01] were associated with an increased risk of NHL. Intake of total phytanic acid was positively associated with NHL risk [OR = 1.5 (1.0–2.1); Ptrend = 0.04]. In analyses stratified by NHL subtype, greater consumption of beef was associated with an increased risk of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, and greater consumption of milk was associated with an increased risk of follicular lymphoma (FL). Total phytanic acid intake was associated with an increased risk of FL and small lymphocytic lymphoma/chronic lymphocytic leukemia. We performed a pooled analysis of data on self-reported history of infections in relation to the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) from 17 case-control studies that included 12,585 cases and 15,416 controls aged 16-96 years at recruitment. Pooled odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were estimated in two-stage random-effect or joint fixed-effect models, adjusting for age, sex and study centre. Data from the 2 years before diagnosis (or date of interview for controls) were excluded. A self-reported history of infectious mononucleosis was associated with an excess risk of NHL (OR = 1.26, 95% CI = 1.01-1.57 based on data from 16 studies); study-specific results indicate significant ( I2 = 51%, p = 0.01) heterogeneity. A self-reported history of measles or whooping cough was associated with an approximate 15% reduction in risk. History of other infection was not associated with NHL. We find little clear evidence of an association between NHL risk and infection although the limitations of data based on self-reported medical history (particularly of childhood illness reported by older people) are well recognized. Aims To assess the expression of Twisted gastrulation (TWSG1) protein, which regulates the activity of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) in the extracellular space in malignant epithelial tumours of the liver. Methods Thirteen hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) samples and 12 intrahepatic cholangiocellular carcinoma (CCA) samples were compiled into diagnosis-specific tissue microarrays. Sections were immunostained with a monoclonal antibody against TWSG1 and a polyclonal antibody against BMP4. Human cell lines were also used, including one HCC cell line (HepG2), three CCA cell lines (OZ, Huh-28, HuCCT-1) and a Papova-immortalised normal hepatocyte cell line (THLE-3) for western blot analysis (WBA). Results Immunostaining and WBA showed a stronger TWSG1 expression in CCA than in HCC. The difference in expression was significant (p<0.05), and the immunohistochemical signal was particularly evident in the malignant epithelial areas close to desmoplastic stroma in CCA and in the areas of glandular differentiation in HCC. No expression was seen in normal hepatocytes. Interestingly, BMP4 was fully expressed in CCA and only partly in HCC. WBA showed a band for BMP4 in both CCA and HCC cell lines. Conclusions TWSG1 is expressed in both malignant epithelial carcinomas, although the level of expression is higher in CCA than in HCC and seems to correlate at least partially with BMP4 expression. The association between renal cell cancer (RCC) and intake of fruit, vegetables and nutrients was examined in a population-based case–control study of 323 cases and 1827 controls; dietary intake was obtained using a mailed questionnaire. Cancer risks were estimated by OR and 95 % CI, adjusting for age, sex, smoking, obesity, hypertension, proxy status, alcohol consumption and dietary fat intake and energy. Intake of vegetables was associated with a decreased risk of RCC (OR 0·5; 95 % CI 0·3, 0·7; Ptrend = 0·002), (top compared to the bottom quartile of intake). When intake of individual nutrients was investigated, vegetable fibre intake was associated with decreased risks (OR 0·4; 95 % CI 0·2, 0·6; P < 0·001), but this was not the case with fruit fibre (OR 0·7; 95 % CI 0·4, 1·1) or grain fibre (OR 1·0; 95 % CI 0·6, 1·5). β-Cryptoxanthin and lycopene were also associated with decreased risks, but when both were included in a mutually adjusted backwards stepwise regression model, only β-cryptoxanthin remained significant (OR 0·5; 95 % CI 0·3, 0·8). When other micronutrients and types of fibre were investigated together, only vegetable fibre and β-cryptoxanthin had significant trends (P < 0·01) (OR 0·6; 95 % CI 0·3, 0·9) (OR 0·5; 95 % CI 0·3, 0·9), respectively. These findings were stronger in those aged over 65 years (Pinteraction = 0·001). Among non-smokers, low intake of cruciferous vegetables and fruit fibre was also associated with increased risk of RCC (Pinteraction = 0·03); similar inverse associations were found for β-cryptoxanthin, lycopene and vitamin C. When nutrients were mutually adjusted by backwards regression in these subgroups, only β-cryptoxanthin remained associated with lower RCC risk. Objective: Few studies have evaluated the potential association between consumption of fruit and vegetables and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) by histologic subtype, and the results of these studies have been inconsistent. Methods: A detailed history of dietary practices and food preferences was collected using a food frequency questionnaire from 348 cases and 470 controls in a population-based, case-control study conducted in Nebraska during 1999-2002. Risk for the highest versus lowest quartile or tertile of intake was estimated by odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CIs). Results: A lower risk of overall NHL was associated with a high intake of green leafy vegetables (OR = 0.6; CI = 0.3-1.0) and cruciferous vegetables (OR = 0.7; CI = 0.4-1.0). Analysis by subtype showed that green leafy vegetable intake was associated with a lower risk of follicular lymphoma (OR = 0.5; CI = 0.3-0.8) and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) (OR = 0.5; CI = 0.3-0.9), while consumption of cruciferous vegetables was associated with a lower risk of DLBCL (OR = 0.4; CI = 0.2-0.8). No association was found with intake of total vegetables, carotene-rich vegetables, or all fruit. For nutrients, the risk of NHL overall was inversely associated with a higher intake of β-cryptoxanthin (OR = 0.6; CI = 0.4-0.9), magnesium (OR = 0.4; CI = 0.2-0.6), potassium (OR = 0.5; CI = 0.3-1.0), and fiber (OR = 0.6; CI = 0.3-1.0), but positively associated with a higher intake of retinol (OR = 1.7; CI = 1.1-2.8). Intakes of vitamin E, magnesium, and potassium were inversely associated with the risk of DLBCL. Conclusion: A higher intake of green leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables is associated with a lower risk of NHL overall, particularly follicular lymphoma and DLBCL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
