Purpose: Dementia caregiving presents a challenge in life transition wherein the adult child is caring for his or her parents. The study examined the effects of a telephone-administered perspective-taking intervention for adult child caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia to reduce levels of depressive symptoms as well as presence and reaction to behavioral problems and also to enhance social support. The mediation effect of perspective-taking on depressive symptoms was also examined. Method: A two-arm cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted for 176 participants with 24 clusters for the 12-week Connecting Through Caregiving (CTC) intervention and Basic Skill Training (BSB). The CTC intervention integrated perspective taking with basic skill training. The primary outcome was depressive symptoms. The first secondary outcome was the presence and reaction to behavioral problems in the care-recipients. The second secondary outcome was social support. The trial also examined whether intervention effects were mediated by perspective-taking. Measures were obtained at baseline Week 1 (pre-intervention), Week 12 (post-intervention) and Week 24 (three-month follow up). Results: Data was collected from 2018 to 2021. Ninety-one participants completed the intervention for CTC and eighty-five completed BSB. In terms of the primary outcome, as compared to the BSB group, the CTC group reported significantly greater reductions in depressive symptoms. For the secondary outcomes, the CTC group also reported reduced perceived presence and reaction to behavioral and memory problems of the care recipient as well as increased social support. Perspective-taking was found to mediate between intervention and reduction of depressive symptoms of the caregiver. No moderation effect on the intervention was found for the presence of COVID-19. Conclusion: The results provided support for the efficacy of the CTC telephone intervention. Objective: Living the final days of life being cared for at home is a preference expressed by many. The data on the effectiveness of home-based end-of-life care (EoLC) intervention to improve the holistic conditions of terminally ill patients are scanty. This study sought to evaluate a psychosocial home-based EoLC intervention for terminally ill patients in Hong Kong. Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted, applying the Integrated Palliative Care Outcome Scale (IPOS) at 3 timepoints (service intake, 1-month, and 3-months after enrollment). A total of 485 eligible, consenting terminally ill people (mean age = 75.48, SD = 11.39) were enrolled, with 40.21% (n = 195) providing data at all 3 timepoints for this study. Results: Decreasing symptom severity scores were observed for all IPOS psychosocial symptoms, and most physical symptoms, over the 3 timepoints. Improvements in depression and practical concerns had the highest omnibus time effects (F > 31.92, P <.01) and T0 to T2 paired comparison effects (Cohen's d > 0.54, P <.01). Physical symptoms of weakness/lack of energy, poor mobility, and poor appetite also showed significant improvements at T1 and T2 (Cohen's d : 0.22-0.46, P <.05). Bivariate regression analyses showed that improvements in anxiety, depression, and family anxiety were associated with improvements in physical symptoms of pain, shortness of breath, weakness/lack of energy, nausea, poor appetite, and poor mobility. Patients' demographic and clinical characteristics were not associated with changes in symptoms. Conclusions: The psychosocial home-based EoLC intervention effectively improved the psychosocial and physical status of terminally ill patients, irrespective of their clinical characteristics or demographics. Background : The mortuary plays an important, under-recognized role in end-of-life care. A ' Life-affirming strategy ' was introduced in the mortuary of a university hospital to enhance respect for the deceased and next-of-kin (NOK). Design: NOK who collected bodies in the mortuary of a university hospital participated in a survey. The satisfaction scores, needs and expectations were compared with a similar survey from 2015. Results: The overall experience for NOK improved significantly compared with 2015. The greatest improvement was achieved in 'mortuary environment', 'attitude of mortuary staff' and 'body viewing arrangement in the mortuary'. The perceived need for additional psychosocial support was significantly reduced. Conclusions: Results demonstrate success of the life-affirming strategy in enhancing end-of-life care for bereaved families. The person-centered approach modernizes and professionalizes mortuary services, with a positive impact on the deceased, NOK, mortuary staff, hospital administration and wider community. Hong Kong experienced the SARS pandemic in 2003. Seventeen years later, the Covid-19 pandemic now challenges Hong Kong and the world. This study aims to unveil the impact of the pandemic on health social workers. One hundred and sixty-six health care social workers in Hong Kong were recruited to join a cross-sectional online survey from November 2020 to March 2021. This paper includes the analysis of the demographic information, fear of contamination, resilience, perceived social support and physical health only. Irrespective of the demographic background, the level of fear of contamination, resilience, perceived social support and physical health were similar. The mean scores of the two dimensions of fear of contamination (Harm avoidance: m = 7.49, s.d. = 3.25; Disgust avoidance: m = 7.75, s.d. = 2.90) were higher than those of general public and clinical samples with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. No moderation effects were found in resilience and perceived social support in the relationship of fear of contamination and physical health. Instead, direct effects were shown.The impact of the pandemic on health social workers was universal. An introduction is presented in which the editors discuss various topics within the issue, including social work in natural- and human-induced disasters, the public health policies during the COVID-19 pandemic, and disaster management practices.

Objectives: This study aims to identify heterogeneous depressive symptom trajectories among the widowed elderly in China, to explore predictive variables of latent class membership, and to detect between-classes differences in life satisfaction across time. Method: Data of 198 individuals widowed between 2011 and 2013 were drawn from The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), a nationally representative survey. Latent class growth analysis was employed to identify depressive symptom trajectories across 2011, 2013, and 2015, and a three-step auxiliary approach was applied to detect predictive variables of latent class membership. Mixed Analysis of Variances was followed to make between-class comparisons on life satisfaction across time. Results: Four grieving trajectories were identified: resilient (54.6%), chronic grief (23.7%), depressed-improved (11.6%), and chronic depression (10.1%). Older age, living exclusively with spouse before widowhood, and agricultural Hukou were significant predictors of depressed-improved, chronic grief, and chronic depression patterns, respectively. Life satisfaction in all groups except for the resilient one remained stable across time, and that of the chronic depression group was significantly lower than those of all the remaining groups. Conclusion: Consistent depressive symptom trajectories during late-life widowhood exist across nations while the specific culture, values, and resources in the Chinese context may have contributed to a particularly high proportion of the chronic grief trajectory. More efforts should be made to identify patterns with predictors before support are provided, and interventions need to be tailored to target specific needs in each subgroup of the elderly during their transitions to widowhood. Purposes/objectives: This paper reports the comparative efficacies of integrative body-mind-spirit intervention (I-BMS) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in patient-caregiver parallel groups for Chinese patients with lung cancer. Design: Randomized controlled trial (RCT). Methods: One hundred and fifty-seven patient-caregiver dyads with no marked functional impairment were randomized into one of the two interventions with eight weekly patient-caregiver parallel groups. Assessments were conducted at baseline, within one, eight- and sixteen-weeks post-intervention. Effects of treatment group across time were analyzed by multilevel modeling. Findings: CBT led to greater reduction in emotional vulnerability than I-BMS. I-BMS resulted in greater increase in overall QoL and spiritual self-care, and more reduction in depression than CBT. Patients in both interventions experienced improvement in physical, emotional and spiritual, except social, domains of QoL. Conclusion: I-BMS was more efficacious for diverse domains of QoL, and CBT was more effective for emotional well-being, despite the relatively small between-group effect sizes. Implications for psychosocial providers/policy: (1) With the expanding repertoire of psychosocial interventions for families facing lung cancer, it has become imperative to investigate the comparative efficacies of empirically supported and culturally adapted interventions. (2) Our findings show that I-BMS was more effective for diverse domains of QoL, while CBT was more efficacious with emotional well-being, although both interventions led to significant improvements in physical, emotional and spiritual domains of patient QoL. (3) Patient-caregiver parallel groups have been shown to be effective for enhancing QoL of Chinese lung cancer patients. The purpose of this study is to explore bereaved mothers' 2-year experiences of losing their only child in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. Taking an interpretative phenomenological approach, this study interviewed six bereaved mothers four times (6 months, 12 months, 18 months, and 24 months) in Dujiangyan area in Sichuan Province. The findings suggest that these mothers' personal grief experiences evolved: initially, anger toward the cause of their children's deaths, following despair of meaningless life, guilt and regret, and finally yearning. Although their yearning and missing ebbed after 2 years, these mothers still had unresolved grief. These mothers also faced strained marital relationships and additional pressure from social interactions. This study investigates Chinese people's opinions about the diagnosis of grief and the factors associated with their opinions. Among 1041 participants who completed the online survey, over half (56.5%) agreed that grief could be a mental disorder under certain circumstances, such as harm to self or others, functional impairment, and persistent grief. Primary reasons against the diagnosis were that grief is normal and its intensity decreases over time. A small proportion of opponents also expressed concerns about stigmatization resulting from labeling grief as being pathological. Purpose: The study adopted a randomized controlled trial to compare the effect of culturally compatible psychosocial interventions on multiple aspects of quality of life (QoL) for family caregivers of lung cancer patients.Methods: 157 Chinese informal caregivers of lung cancer patients were recruited together with the family members for whom they were providing care, and randomly assigned to either integrative body-mind-spirit intervention (I-BMS) or cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Patient-caregiver dyads attended the same arm of intervention in separate groups for 8 weeks. Assessments of generic QoL, anxiety, depression, perceived stress, insomnia, and caregiving burden were measured before intervention (T0), within 1-week (T1), 8-week (T2), and 16-week (T3) post-intervention.Results: Adopting the intention-to-treat analysis, family caregivers in receipt of both I-BMS and CBT exhibited a statistically significant improvement in generic QoL immediately following intervention and at follow-up assessments, with moderate effect size. Improvement of insomnia was found at T1 for both modes, which deteriorated at follow-up; both modes reduced anxiety and perceived stress at follow-up. No intervention effect was observed in depression and domains of caregiving burden. There was no significant interaction effect between intervention type and time. No main or interaction effect between sample background variables and intervention type was found to predict symptomatic changes at T1 and T3.Conclusions: Culturally attuned I-BMS and CBT exhibited equivalent effectiveness in improving psychological distress and generic QoL for family caregivers of lung cancer patients. Background. Advance care planning (ACP) is considered to be an integral part of end-of-life care. This study explored the facilitators and barriers of ACP by consolidating the practice experiences of a group of healthcare professionals involved in an outreach end-of-life programme for older people living residential care homes for the elderly (RCHEs). Methods: Fourteen healthcare professionals participated in this qualitative study. They first completed a questionnaire to capture their views on ACP by describing a successful case. Then they took part in a focus group to discuss desired outcomes, facilitators, and barriers of ACP. Thematic analysis was applied to the questionnaire and focus group data. Results: Participants considered ACP a valuable opportunity for older people to express their care preferences. The resultant care plan provides families and care teams a useful reference for treatment decision-making. Facilitators included the collaborative ties among the community geriatric assessment team, RCHE staff, and the families of patients; dedicated and trained staff; and well-informed family members. Barriers included delayed referral, a lack of public acceptance and awareness, and overwhelming routines among healthcare professionals. Conclusions: Our findings underscore the multitude of individual, family, staff, and social factors affecting the dynamic process of ACP. An effective collaborative framework and professional training in communicating with distressed families are required. In addition, enhancing public awareness of comfort care and ACP is crucial. The purpose of this study is to explore the grief experiences of mothers after they lost their children in the 2008 China earthquake. Informed by the dual process model, this study conducted in-depth interviews to explore how six bereaved mothers coped with such grief over a 2-year period. Right after the earthquake, these mothers suffered from intensive grief. They primarily coped with loss-oriented stressors. As time passed, these mothers began to focus on restoration-oriented stressors to face changes in life. This coping trajectory was a dynamic and integral process, which bereaved mothers oscillated between loss- and restoration-oriented stressors. Background and Objectives To examine the primary and secondary outcomes of a theory-driven group bereavement intervention for widowed older adults through a cluster-randomized controlled trial. Research Designs and Methods Twelve community centers providing health and social services for elderly people were randomly assigned to the experimental condition, the dual-process bereavement group intervention-Chinese (DPBGI-C) and to the control condition, the loss-oriented bereavement group intervention-Chinese (LOBGI-C). Both interventions comprised weekly, 2-hr sessions for 7 weeks followed by a 4-hr outing in the eighth week. Of 215 widowed older adults contacted and assessed, 125 eligible participants were interviewed three times—preintervention, postintervention, and at a 16-week follow-up—to assess complicated grief symptoms, anxiety, depression, loneliness, and social support. Results Using intention-to-treat analysis, both interventions produced improvements in grief, depression, and social support, but effect sizes were larger with the DPBGI-C. The participants in the DPBGI-C condition also reported reduced anxiety, emotional loneliness, and social loneliness, whereas those in the LOBGI-C condition did not. There were interactions between intervention type and time with respect to grief, anxiety, emotional loneliness, and social loneliness. Discussion and Implications Although traditional LOBGI-C can help to reduce grief and depression in bereaved older adults, the DPBGI-C was found to be superior as it had a greater and more extensive impact on outcomes. This is the first study of the effectiveness of this evidence-based, theory-driven intervention for widowed Chinese older adults and has implications for theory building and practice. We conducted a scoping review of quantitative studies on professional caregivers' bereavement after patients' deaths following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. We found 12 studies involving 1317 professional caregivers that met inclusion criteria. Professional caregivers commonly had moderate, and sometimes long-term, bereavement reactions after patients' death. The evidence of factors affecting profession grief is inconclusive. Previous researchers extensively used the framework of understanding familial bereavement for analyzing the professional caregivers' bereavement, which we found to be inadequate. Background: Based on the cognitive theory, anxiety arising from the awareness of death and dying may activate dysfunctional attitudes, which may then reduce quality of life. This study examined the interdependence and the mediating role of dysfunctional attitudes on the relationship between death anxiety and quality of life among patients with lung cancer and their caregivers.Methods: From March 2016 to April 2017, 173 pairs of patients and their caregivers enrolled in a randomized controlled trial of psychosocial support. Using the baseline data, actor-partner interdependence modeling was used to analyze the relationships among death anxiety, dysfunctional attitudes, and quality of life.Results: In patients, death anxiety was related to dependency (β = .51) and self-control (β = -.37); achievement (β = -.21) and self-control (β = .34) were related to quality of life. Among caregivers, death anxiety was related to all 3 dysfunctional attitudes of their own (βs = .23 to.32); dependency (β = -.22) was associated with quality of life. Caregiver quality of life was also associated with patient self-control (β = .22) and achievement (β = -.18). Patient self-control mediated the links between patient death anxiety with both patient and caregiver quality of life. The relationship between death anxiety and quality of life was mediated by dependency in caregivers.Discussion: Death anxiety influences dysfunctional attitudes and quality of life of both patients and caregivers. Background: Life review interventions have been used to alleviate psycho-spiritual distress in people near the end of life. However, their effectiveness remains inconclusive. Aim: To evaluate the effects of therapeutic life review on spiritual well-being, psychological distress, and quality of life in patients with terminal or advanced cancer. Design: A systematic review according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses methodology. Data sources: Five databases were searched from their respective inception through February 2017 for relevant randomized controlled trials. The effects of therapeutic life review were pooled across the trials. Standardized mean differences were calculated for the pooled effects. Heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 test. Study quality was assessed using the Cochrane criteria. Results: Eight randomized controlled trials met the inclusion criteria. The pooled results suggested a desirable effect of therapeutic life review on the meaning of life domain of spiritual well-being (standardized mean difference = 0.33; 95% confidence interval, 0.12 to 0.53), general distress (standardized mean difference = −0.32; 95% confidence interval, −0.55 to −0.09), and overall quality of life (standardized mean difference = 0.35; 95% confidence interval, 0.15 to 0.56) when compared to usual care only. Of the three outcomes examined, only the pooled effect on overall quality of life remained statistically significant at follow-ups up to 3 months after the intervention (standardized mean difference = 0.82; 95% confidence interval, 0.47 to 1.18). Conclusions: Therapeutic life review is potentially beneficial for people near the end of life. However, the results should be interpreted with caution due to the limited number of randomized controlled trials and associated methodological weaknesses. Background: Advance care planning is a process of discussion that enables competent adults to express their wishes about end-of-life care through periods of decisional incapacity. Although a number of studies have documented social workers' attitudes toward, knowledge about, and involvement in advance care planning, the information is fragmented. The purpose of this review was to provide a narrative synthesis of evidence on social workers' perspectives and experiences regarding implementation of advance care planning. Methods: Six databases were searched for peer-reviewed research papers from their respective inception through December 2016. All of the resulting studies relevant to both advance care planning and social worker were examined. The findings of relevant studies were synthesized thematically. Results: Thirty-one articles met the eligibility criteria. Six research themes were identified: social workers' attitudes toward advance care planning; social workers' knowledge, education and training regarding advance care planning; social workers' involvement in advance care planning; social workers' perceptions of their roles; ethical issues relevant to advance care planning; and the effect of social work intervention on advance care planning engagement. The findings suggest that there is a consensus among social workers that advance care planning is their duty and responsibility and that social workers play an important role in promoting and implementing advance care planning through an array of activities. Conclusions: This study provides useful knowledge for implementing advance care planning through illustrating social workers' perspectives and experiences. Further studies are warranted to understand the complexity inherent in social workers' involvement in advance care planning for different life-limiting illnesses or within different socio-cultural contexts. The rationale, development, and validation of the Bereavement Guilt Scale (BGS) are described in this article. The BGS was based on a theoretically developed, multidimensional conceptualization of guilt. Part 1 describes the generation of the item pool, derived from in-depth interviews, and review of the scientific literature. Part 2 details statistical analyses for further item selection (Sample 1, N = 273). Part 3 covers the psychometric properties of the emergent-BGS (Sample 2, N = 600, and Sample 3, N = 479). Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that a five-factor model fit the data best. Correlations of BGS scores with depression, anxiety, self-esteem, self-forgiveness, and mode of death were consistent with theoretical predictions, supporting the construct validity of the measure. The internal consistency and test-retest reliability were also supported. Thus, initial testing or examination suggests that the BGS is a valid tool to assess multiple components of bereavement guilt. Further psychometric testing across cultures is recommended. Background: Symptoms of complicated grief are associated with a traumatic death. However, the subjective experience of whether or not the death was considered traumatic has not been substantially explored. This study first examined the difference between objective and subjective traumatic death, and then investigated their respective impacts on complicated grief and depressive symptoms following bereavement among older adults in Hong Kong.Methods: Participants were 187 Hong Kong adults aged 65 years or above who had lost a family member within the past five years. Demographic information, the Inventory of Complicated Grief (ICG), the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), and the anxiety subscale of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were utilized.Results: The subjective traumatic level of the death did not differ between the objective traumatic and non-traumatic death as defined by nature of death (t = -1.554, p = 0.122). Higher subjective traumatic levels and younger age of the deceased, were positively related to complicated grief symptoms, F (10, 161) = 14.222, p < 0.001, R 2 = 0.469. Higher subjective traumatic levels and older age of the bereaved were positively associated with symptoms of depression, F (10, 160) = 2.855, p = 0.003, R 2 = 0.151. However, objective traumatic death was found to have no relation to either complicated grief or depressive symptoms.Conclusions: Subjective and objective traumatic death may be two distinct concepts, and the subjective experience of the death as a trauma may be a more important factor that contributes to complicated grief and depressive symptoms. Fate control has been often misconceptualized as a superstitious belief and overlooked in health psychology. It is not known how this cultural belief might impact the well-being of Chinese people living with HIV. This study examined the protective role of fate control for well-being and the potential mediation effect of resilience. Participants in this study were rural patients who contracted HIV via commercial blood donation. In this cross-sectional survey, 250 participants completed measures of fate control, well-being, and resilience. The results showed that fate control and resilience were positively associated with well-being. Resilience mediated the association between fate control and well-being. Our findings provide insight into the adaptive function of fate control as a cognitive defensive mechanism and highlight the need to incorporate this cultural belief in developing culturally sensitive intervention programs for resilience enhancement tailored for this understudied population infected with HIV living in rural China. Bereavement may bring negative impacts on the mind, body, and spiritual well-being of grieving persons. Some bereaved persons with chronic fatigue syndrome- (CFS-) illness experience a dual burden of distress. This study investigated the effects of bereavement on CFS-like illness by comparing bereaved and nonbereaved participants. It also adopted a random group design to investigate the effectiveness of Qigong on improving the well-being of bereaved participants. The Qigong intervention comprised 10 group sessions delivered twice a week for 5 weeks and home-practice for at least three times a week lasting 15–30 minutes each. The participants’ fatigue, anxiety, and depression, quality of life (QoL), and spiritual well-being were measured at baseline and 3 months after treatment. The bereaved participants experienced significantly greater mental fatigue (16.09 versus 14.44, p=0.017) and lower physical QoL (34.02 versus 37.17, p=0.011) than their nonbereaved counterparts. After 3 months, the mental fatigue (−8 versus −4, p=0.010) and physical fatigue (−10 versus −5, p=0.007) experienced by intervention group had declined significantly, and improvements on their spirituality (14 versus −2, p=0.013) and psychological QoL (8.91 versus 0.69, p=0.002) scores exceeded those of the control group. Facing an excessive number of deaths and the intense emotions of bereaved family members, social workers who work with dying and bereaved persons are confronted with exceptional emotional challenges. Based on two models of death anxiety, an education programme was developed with different experiential exercises with the aim of enhancing the emotional competence of social workers in Hong Kong. Through working with regrets and meaningfulness, the programme aims at reducing personal death anxiety, hopefully reducing the distress and non-empathetic responses of the social workers. An effectiveness study with 385 participants was carried out. Data were collected at three time points (pre, post and follow-up) to capture the changes over time. The programme is considered successful as, according to the statistics gathered, the major outcomes of work comfort and competence level improved. Statistically significant changes across time were found in death anxiety and meaningfulness. Moreover, correlations were found between death anxiety and competence and comfort level. Social work educators are concerned about how best to equip social work students with the ability to self-reflect, because this is a core professional competence. The present study employed both quantitative and qualitative means to evaluate a course which set out to foster reflexivity among social work undergraduates. A quasi-experimental design was employed to examine the effectiveness of the course. Data were collected at pre-course, post-course, and 6 months after completion. We found that, over time, students in the experimental group gained more insight. The students disclosed in focus group interviews that the course had enhanced their understanding toward self, family, and society. The implications for social work education are discussed. Background: This paper reports the development and validation of the Chinese Significant Wish Fulfillment Scale (CSWFS), a new multidimensional scale for assessing the perceived importance and level of fulfillment of wishes of older adults.Methods: Three studies were involved. Study 1 developed a 26-item pool on wish fulfillment through in-depth interviews with 22 older adults. Study 2 reduced the pool to 23 items through validation with a new sample of 315 older adults and examined the internal reliability. Study 3 involved a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and examined the test-retest reliability and the convergent validity of the scale with the construct of regret.Results: A five-factor structure model of 23 items was identified through exploratory factor analysis, which accounted for 51.67% of variance. As informed by the CFA in Study 3, a five-factor 22-item model was the best fit. Internal reliability and test-retest reliability was found to be good. Convergent validity was examined through correlation with the construct of future regret. The correlation, though statistically significant, was small.Conclusion: CSWFS demonstrates good psychometric properties, but the construct might be slightly different from that of future regrets. With the growing complexity of social problems, there is a shift of emphasis from competence-based approaches to a reflective practice paradigm in social work education. Reflexivity is the foundation of reflective practice of professional social workers. This article examines the development of a course to promote reflexivity among first-year social work students in Hong Kong. This included structured experiential learning in the classroom and at a campsite, and student-directed social problem analyses and presentations. Small-group teaching was used to increase student-teacher interaction. Thirty-four students participated in a three-time point study with measurements taken at pre-course, post-course and nine-month follow up. There were statistically significant increases in mean total scores on a standardised scale measuring 'engagement in reflection', 'need for reflection', 'insights', and a decrease in 'personal distress'. The psychometric properties of a Chinese version of the Death Attitude Profile-Revised (DAP-R) were examined with 100 young adult, 100 middle-age adult, and 100 older adult Chinese respondents in Hong Kong (N= 300). Three of the five subscales from the original DAP-R including Fear of Death, Death Avoidance, and Escape Acceptance were replicated and had acceptable internal reliabilities (Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.79 to 0.85); comparison between these subscales and scores of the DAS provide evidence of concurrent validity. However, items on the Neutral Acceptance subscale loaded onto two separate factors, replicating findings from an earlier validation study of the DAP-R, and providing further evidence that this subscale may not be measuring a unitary construct. This study presents an exploration of significant coping strategies for Chinese widowers' healthy adjustment to conjugal loss. The informants, 17 Chinese widowers, were asked to share strategies they have adopted to achieve healthy adjustment to spousal loss. The results reveal that loss-orientation coping, consisting of: 1) emotion-focused coping; 2) social coping; and 3) meaning-focused coping, was the key strategy in dealing with challenges posed by the past. Restoration-orientation coping, consisting of: 1) problem-focused coping; 2) social coping; 3) future-focused coping and 4) meaning-focused coping; was the key to managing challenges posed by present and future needs. Cancer patients experience enormous psychological stress in addition to their physical suffering. Neither disease- nor symptom-specific approaches in the conventional Western medical model or single-modal psychological intervention focusing on stress and anxiety are sufficient to relieve patients of their pain and trauma resulting from cancer. Through years of working with Chinese cancer patients and witnessing their growth and resilience, we were motivated to develop an Eastern Body-Mind-Spirit (BMS) Group Intervention model which has a strong emphasis on turning crisis into opportunities, and growth through pain. This model blends different intervention approaches, techniques, and outcome measures both from the East and the West. This paper describes our intervention approaches and discusses the theoretical background in relation to the concept of transformation and some qualitative findings which provide evidence for the study's applicability and effectiveness. This study reports the results of a survey on death preparation, death-related beliefs, and death anxiety in a Hong Kong sample. Respondents (N = 285) recruited from the community were asked if they have prepared for themselves a life insurance, a will, and a resting place (e.g. burial site, columbarium, etc.). Questions about their death-related cultural beliefs and anxiety were also asked. Results indicated that respondents who have thought of preparing for their own deaths but not yet acted out (contemplators) held stronger traditional cultural beliefs about death than respondents who have either done the preparations (planners) or never thought of the idea (non-contemplators). Contemplators also reported higher death anxiety. Despite limitations of the study's design, the current results suggest the beliefs in cultural taboo may play a role in the preparation for one's death. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In an exploratory, phenomenological study of seven Chinese widows in Hong Kong, five major themes are identified: relationship with the deceased, relationship with others, grief reactions, coping and emotional expression. This paper focuses on the first theme: the widows' relationship with the deceased husband along a timeline from the time of diagnosis to after death. The experiences in the final days with the deceased were frequently referred to when the informants talked about this theme. This paper aims to give added voice, based on the experience of Chinese widows, to the possible role of hospice and palliative care on influencing the bereavement experience. Issues of awareness and acceptance of death, the supportive environment and support for family carers, the moment of death, creation of legacies, and sensitivity towards cultural embedded practices, are discussed. This is a preliminary report of a study that examined the clinical usefulness of the Chinese Grief Reaction Assessment Form (GRAF). The validity, reliability, and factor structure of the form were also explored. We administered the GRAF to 180 bereaved individuals during intake interview for bereavement counseling. The GRAF has obtained good internal Cronbach's α reliability of .89 and showed its validity in being able to discriminate between the grief reactions of bereaved individuals experiencing anticipated and unanticipated death in the predicted direction. Bereaved women had stronger grief reaction than men. The item "I do not want to abandon him/her" obtained the highest mean ranked scores among both bereaved men and bereaved women. Our findings support the use of the GRAF as a clinical tool to assess psychological symptoms associated with bereavement among Hong Kong Chinese, which also holds promise for research and program evaluation.
