New technologies regularly bring about profound changes in our daily lives. Romantic relationships are no exception to these transformations. Some philosophers expect the emergence in the near future of love drugs: a theoretically achievable biotechnological intervention that could be designed to strengthen and maintain love in romantic relationships. We investigated laypeople's resistance to the use of such technologies and its sources. Across two studies (Study 1, French and Peruvian university students, N after exclusion = 186; Study 2, Amazon Mechanical Turk sample, N after exclusion = 693, pre-registered), we found that the use of love drugs designed to strengthen and maintain love in romantic relationships are considered as more morally problematic than psychological therapy with the same aim. In Study 2, we show that this last effect is partially due to the fact that the love resulting from the use of love drugs is perceived as less authentic, intense, and durable. This paper proposes a novel feedforward control scheme to achieve a very smooth transition from Constant Current (CC) to Constant Voltage (CV) charging modes, the commonly used method for electric vehicle charging applications. Furthermore, a three-loop model-independent Linear Active Disturbance Rejection Control (LADRC)-based system is proposed, replacing the traditional two-loop Proportional-Integral (PI) control system. The extra loop performs a decoupled dq vector control of the inductor current, which is typically not used in single-phase Dual Active Bridge (DAB) systems. This additional loop not only facilitates the optimal determination of both internal and external phase shift angles of a Dual-Phase Shift (DPS) modulator but also lowers the peak input current of the converter, allowing for lower-rated switches. Numerical simulations using MATLAB/Simulink demonstrate the robustness of the proposed control strategy against both input voltage disturbances and load disturbances during the transition from CC to CV charging modes. Fractures nucleated from defects and subjected to cyclic loading can experience propagation for a range of stress intensity factor ΔK well below the so‐called long crack threshold. This phenomenon is attributed to the development of crack closure mechanisms which may differ from those observed in laboratory tests conducted in accordance with current standards. Cracks originating from material defects require a specific degree of extension to develop the plastic wake, thus achieving a stabilized condition called the long crack threshold. However, in certain materials, this stabilization length can extend up to several millimeters, effectively encompassing a significant portion of the component's fatigue life. Therefore, understanding and quantifying the development of ΔKth with crack extension is important for implementing a reliable assessment procedure based on the fracture mechanics theory. Herein, R‐curve measurements are presented for five distinct structural metallic alloys widely used in various industrial applications. Additionally, the impact of load ratio is investigated, providing a comprehensive analysis of fatigue crack resistance in terms of the R‐curve concept. This study underscores the necessity of ruling new experimental techniques to measure and implement the long crack threshold, thereby ensuring the development of a reliable and robust framework for fatigue assessment. Although ethical reforms in biological anthropology have gained ground in recent years, there is still a scarcity of ethical standards for work involving historical documented collections (HDCs) at US museums and universities. These collections of deceased individuals were created in the late 19th to mid‐20th centuries under anatomy laws that targeted socially marginalized communities and allowed for the dissection of these individuals without their consent. Due to the extensive information associated with the individuals and made available to researchers, these collections have served as foundational resources for theory and methods development in biological anthropology into the 21st century. Recognizing the need for ethical guidelines for research, teaching and training, community engagement, and curation involving HDCs, we held a workshop called "Ethical Futures for Curation, Research, and Teaching in Biological Anthropology" on November 15–17, 2021. Here we summarize the conversations and major points of consensus among the workshop participants on these topics in order to advance these ethical considerations more broadly across the field. The study aimed to understand the meaning of parenthood and the reproductive decisions of adults who do not have children in Chile. Based on a qualitative approach, 10 participants aged between 30 and 39 were interviewed. After that, a thematic analysis was conducted. The results indicated that the meanings of parenthood encompass a broad interplay of sociocultural, personal, and biological elements. As a result, parenthood was generally perceived as a complex task incompatible with other roles, leading the participants not to have children. Finally, gender differences were identified in the conception of parenthood and in the determination of having children. Men envisioned their future with children, whereas women reported more reservations about it. It has been concluded that how parenthood is signified is linked with the decision to reproduce. The layered material α-RuCl3 is a promising candidate to realize the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) state. However, at ambient pressure, deviations from the perfect Kitaev geometry prevent the existence of the QSL state at low temperatures. Here we present the discovery of a pressure-induced high-symmetry phase in α-RuCl3, which creates close to ideal conditions for the emergence of a QSL. Employing a novel approach based on Bragg and diffuse scattering of synchrotron radiation, we reveal a pressure-induced reorganization of the RuCl3-layers. Most importantly, this reorganization affects the structure of the layers themselves, which acquire a high trigonal symmetry. For this trigonal phase the largest ratio between the Kitaev (K) and the Heisenberg exchange (J) ever encountered is found: K/J = 124. Additionally, we demonstrate that this phase can also be stabilized by a slight biaxial pressure. This not only resolves the conflicting reports of low-temperature structures in the literature, but also facilitates the investigation of the high-symmetry phase and its potential QSL using a range of experimental techniques. This study investigated the relationship between stress exposure and subsequent ethanol use, focusing on individual differences among male rats. We combined operant self-administration with behavioral economics to assess how intermittent swim stress affects ethanol consumption. This approach allowed for a nuanced analysis of the transition from regular ethanol intake to stressinduced escalation in economic demand. Results showed a consistent rise in ethanol demand post-stress among subjects, irrespective of exposure to actual swim stress or a sham procedure. This increase may result from a two-week abstinence or an inherent rise in demand over time. Significantly, we identified a direct link between post-stress corticosterone levels and the demand for ethanol, considering baseline levels. This correlation was particularly pronounced when examining the shifts in both corticosterone levels and demand for ethanol poststress. However, neither post-stress corticosterone levels nor their change over time correlated significantly with changes in ethanol demand following a forced swim test that was administered 24 h after the intermittent swim stress test. This suggests potential context-specific or stressor-specific effects. Importantly, pre-stress ethanol demand did not significantly predict the corticosterone response to stress, indicating that high ethanol-demand rats do not inherently exhibit heightened stress sensitivity. Our research brings to light the complex interplay between stress and ethanol consumption, highlighting the critical role of individual differences in this relationship. Environmental issues and the global need to increase economically sustainable access to electricity addressed and boosted scientific research and use of Distributed Energy Resources, such as solar Photovoltaic (PV). Multi‐port power converters can be of great interest for a compact and efficient interface between PV, storage units, and DC loads. The Triple Active Bridge (TAB) shows interesting advantages in terms of isolation and Zero Voltage Switching capabilities over wide load and input voltage ranges. This work aims to develop a TAB prototype for a NanoGrid (NG) application, analyzing the possibility of a direct interface of PV modules, storage units, and DC loads, without the use of intermediate conversion stages. The TAB prototype uses Gallium Nitride devices, and an evaluation of the overall efficiency is provided, useful to compare with other isolated three‐port converters. Through an analytical approach, a TAB has been sized and optimized to meet specific application requirements. MATLAB/Simulink simulations have been done for the sizing validation and the control strategy design. A prototype has been developed and experimental measurements have been compared with simulation results. Background: Mental disorders in university students are a growing attention problem in the international community due to their high prevalence and serious consequences. One possible reason is university students' difficulties in coping with stress. Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a transdiagnostic process that, when combined with stress, can lead to the development of various disorders. We aim to determine the effect of stress and RNT on predicting various mental health syndromes in university students across 7 days. Method: Prospective observational study using Momentary Ecological Assessment (EMA) with the OURMIND Mobile App. On day one, 238 university students responded to the SCL-90R questionnaire for symptoms of depression, anxiety, hostility, obsession, psychoticism, paranoia, somatization, and interpersonal sensitivity; RNT styles questionnaires, RRS for rumination and negative reflection, PSWQ for worry; SISCO-II for term academic stress, and sociodemographic. EMA consisted of five assessments a day for 6 days; each time, the students answered items about academic and non-academic stress (EMA-stress), reactive RNT duration and intrusiveness (EMA-RNT process), and reactive RNT rumination, reflection, and worry (EMA-RNT content). On day eight, symptoms were re-assessed. Seven hierarchical stepwise linear regression models were used to test the predictive power of the study variables in the development of SCL-90R symptoms. Results: When comparing models, adding baseline symptoms increased the models' predictive power in all symptom groups. In most cases, including EMAstress generated greater predictive power, except for paranoia and interpersonal sensitivity. Adding the EMA-RNT process increased the prediction of paranoia and obsessive symptoms; for hostility symptoms, RNT styles increased predictive power. For the final regression models, considering the initial symptoms, the EMA-RNT process predicted the progression of symptoms in six out of eight groups, while EMA-non-academic stress predicted the remaining two. Additionally, living with other relatives or friends was a predictor of depressive symptoms. Discussion: The stress of university life impacts the development of psychiatric symptoms in university students. These results provide evidence of RNT as a transdiagnostic process in several syndromic groups. Universal preventive programs should consider the impact of academic and non-academic stress on university students' mental health. The intrusion of relatively warm water onto the continental shelf is widely recognized as a threat to Antarctic ice shelves and glaciers grounded below sea level, as enhanced ocean heat increases their basal melt. While the circulation of warm water has been documented on the East Antarctic continental shelf, the modes of warm water transport from the deep ocean onto the shelf are still uncertain. This makes predicting the future responses of major East Antarctic marine-grounded glaciers, such as Totten and Ninnis glaciers, particularly challenging. Here, we outline the key role of submarine canyons to convey southward flowing currents that transport warm Circumpolar Deep Water toward the East Antarctic shelf break, thus facilitating warm water intrusion on the continental shelf. Sediment drifts on the eastern flank of the canyons provide evidence for sustained southward-directed flows. These morpho-sedimentary features thus highlight areas potentially prone to enhanced ocean heat transport toward the continental shelf, with repercussions for past, present, and future glacial melting and consequent sea level rise. Sediment drifts record long-lasting southward flowing currents within submarine canyons, which convey warm Circumpolar Deep Water toward the East Antarctic shelf break, thus facilitating warm water intrusion on the continental shelf. This experimental study investigates the palladium/rhodium based three-way catalyst (TWC) in a hydrogen-gasoline dual-fuel spark ignition (SI) engine under stoichiometric and lean conditions. The work focused on lean-burn engine operating conditions with the aim of reducing nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions during the combustion process, where the TWC is not effective, while improving the thermal efficiency of the engine. Under these leanburn engine conditions, the combustion promoting properties of hydrogen allowed for maintained engine combustion stability as determined by the cycle-to-cycle variation (COVimep) values even up to ultra lean conditions (λ= 2.0). It was found that by reducing the combustion temperature through the application of lean conditions, engine-out NOx emissions could be reduced or even eliminated, while under these conditions the TWC was effective in reducing engine-out carbon-based gaseous emissions. Introduction: There is a growing consensus that patient-centered care is more effective in treating patients than a strictly biomedical model, where there are known challenges to involving the patient in assessments, treatment goals, and determining preferred outcomes. Objectives: The current study seeks to integrate patient values and perspectives by exploring how people diagnosed with a life-limiting disease define healing in their own words. Methods: As a part of a larger study that included cognitive interviewing, we asked the question "what does the word healing mean to you?" Data were collected during face-to-face interviews with patients from three metropolitan healthcare facilities. Results: Thirty participants responded to the question "what does healing mean to you?" Seven themes were identified through the data analysis. These themes include acceptance, feeling better, pain, social support, process, religion/spirituality, and make whole. The feeling better, pain, and process themes have subthemes. Significance of results: Probing to understand patient perspectives and how to provide a holistic approach to care is essential to patient treatment. Patients defined healing in a broader way than how it is typically defined in literature. Background: This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of using two different devices to treat upper palatal discrepancies evaluated with a digital intraoral scanner. Methods: A total of 64 patients were enrolled and treated with either an elastodontic expansion device (32 patient test group, 16 females and 16 males, mean age 7.08 ± 0.44) or Haas expander (32 patient control group, 16 females and 16 males, mean age 7.32 ± 0.50). The two groups exhibited similar orthodontic features. The orthodontic criteria were: skeletal class I relationship; molar class I relationship; complete eruption of upper sixths; presence of unilateral or bilateral cross bite. All dental casts were examined and subsequently scanned with an intraoral scanner (I-Tero) pre-treatment (T0) and 12 months after the onset of therapy (T1) to assess the distance between the decidous upper canines (ICW, intercanine width) and the distance between the mesiopalatal cusps of the upper first molars (IMW, intermolar width). For statistical analysis, the t-test for continous variables and the chi-square test for categorical variables were used, respectively. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the mean and SD of the expansions that resulted from the Haas expander and the elastodontic devices (Haas expander vs. Eptamed: ICW_T1 (Haas) = 42.34 (3.09), ICW_T1 (Eptamed) = 42.69 (2.77); p = 0.743; IMW_T1 (Haas) = 34.22 (2.29), IMW_T1 (Eptamed) = 34.00 (2.56); p = 0.800). The two devices were similarly effective. Conclusions: Elastodontic devices and the Haas expander can successfully help the orthodontist to conduct upper arch expansion treatment. However, elastodontic devices are more comfortable during the resolution of palatal discrepancies compared to palatal expander devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study addresses the challenge of equifinality in agent-based modeling (ABM) by introducing a novel sequential calibration approach. Equifinality arises when multiple models equally fit observed data, risking the selection of an inaccurate model. In the context of ABM, such a situation might arise due to limitations in data, such as aggregating observations into coarse spatial units. It can lead to situations where successfully calibrated model parameters may still result in reliability issues due to uncertainties in accurately calibrating the inner mechanisms. To tackle this, we propose a method that sequentially calibrates model parameters using diverse outcomes from multiple datasets. The method aims to identify optimal parameter combinations while mitigating computational intensity. We validate our approach through indoor pedestrian movement simulation, utilizing three distinct outcomes: (1) the count of grid cells crossed by individuals, (2) the number of people in each grid cell over time (fine grid) and (3) the number of people in each grid cell over time (coarse grid). As a result, the optimal calibrated parameter combinations were selected based on high test accuracy to avoid overfitting. This study introduces reusable polyacrylic membranes, fabricated from commercially available monomers (1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and methylmethacrylate), as a promising approach for pesticide extraction. These membranes effectively remove the commonly used herbicides mecoprop (RE ≈ 99%) and bentazon (RE ≈ 95%) at low concentrations, which pose water contamination risks due to their water-soluble properties and leaf-level sorption. The membranes exhibit excellent manageability and resistance, allowing for safe handling without personal protective equipment. Additionally, the material is environmentally friendly and can be washed and reused for at least 4 cycles without a significant decrease in performance. Characterization techniques, including NMR, TGA, DSC, mechanical testing, N2 adsorption, and FTIR analysis, were used to investigate properties and assess the influence of the polymeric composition. The study focused on examining the lateral charged aminoethyl groups, which play a crucial role in sorbent-sorbate interactions. Sorption kinetics, isotherms, and permeation studies provided insights into the removal mechanism, efficiency, and permeability coefficients, revealing hydrophobic–hydrophobic interactions between the pesticides and the polymer. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed a scorpion-like conformation of the macromolecular chains surrounding the pesticides. These findings support the hydrophobic nature of the extraction mechanism and highlight the significant role of charged aminoethyl groups in facilitating this process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Time‐of‐Flight Positron Emission Tomography (ToF‐PET) is a medical imaging technique, based on the detection of two back‐to‐back γ‐photons generated from radiotracers injected into the body. Its limit is the ability of employed scintillation detectors to discriminate in time the arrival of γ‐pairs, that is, the coincidence time resolution (CTR). A CTR < 50 ps will enable fast imaging with ultralow radiotracer dose. Monolithic materials do not have simultaneously the required high light output and fast emission characteristics, thus the concept of scintillating heterostructure is proposed, where the device is made of a dense scintillator coupled to a fast‐emitting light material. Here a composite polymeric scintillator loaded with hafnium oxide nanoparticles is presented. This enhanced by +300% its scintillation yield, by surpassing commercial plastic scintillators. The nanocomposite is coupled to bismuth germanate oxide (BGO) realizing a multilayer metascintillator. The energy sharing between its components is observed, which activates the nanocomposite's fast emission enabling a net CTR improvement of 25% with respect to monolithic BGO. These results demonstrate that a controlled loading with dense nanomaterials is an excellent strategy to enhance the performance of polymeric scintillators for their use in advanced radiation detection and imaging technologies. Although risk factors for recidivism were extensively studied, re-incarcerations still account for a disproportionate amount of overall service use and cost. Therefore, the main objectives of the study were (1) to estimate the prevalence of re-incarcerations in a sample of male incarcerated people and (2) to verify if some socio-demographic and clinical features including impulsivity can be risk factors of re-incarceration. We conducted a cross-sectional study recruiting 479 newly arrived incarcerated people in an Italian detention centre, between 2018 and 2022. The incarcerated individuals were interviewed to collect clinical information. Impulsivity was assessed by the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11). A total of 479 consecutive male incarcerated people was included. Two hundred and seventy-six of them (57.6%) had previously been incarcerated. Logistic regression analysis showed that having higher age, to be married or in relationship, to have low-medium level of education, housing instability, low or no income, cocaine use disorder in the last year and a history of non-suicidal self-injuries increased the likelihood of recurrent incarcerations. Moreover, re-incarceration was associated with higher rate of personality disorders and higher scores on attentional and motor impulsivity. Reintegration programs should address some risk factors associated with re-incarceration and promote social rehabilitation among incarcerated individuals. High rates of reincarceration among prisoners are associated with important economic burden. We investigated sociodemographic and clinical predictors of reincarceration. Some modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors increase the likelihood of repeat incarcerations. Some specific domains of impulsivity may be associated with higher risk of reincarceration. Although contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is a widespread and easily manageable technique, image interpretation errors can occur due to the operator's inexperience and/or lack of knowledge of the frequent pitfalls, which may cause uncertain diagnosis and misdiagnosis. Indeed, knowledge of the basic physical and technical principles of ultrasound is needed both to understand sonographic image findings and to evaluate the potential and limits of the method. Like the B-mode ultrasound, the quality of the CEUS examination is also subject not only to the adequate manual skill of the operator but also to his/her deep knowledge of the technique which improves the quality of the image helping avoid misleading artifacts. The counterfeit works of Rafael Bolívar Coronado (1884–1924) represent a phenomenon with unusual repercussions on critical reception. This author managed to publish more than twelve volumes with false authorship and content, from "crónicas de Indias" to collections of poetry. This article presents a theoretical approach regarding literary falsification in general and highlights the concepts of lightness and multiplicity to propose an interpretation of the Bolívar Coronado case. This paper also deals with the artistic dimension of literary forgeries as creative works that use the same methods and strategies as fiction writing. The set of falsified works by this author can be interpreted as a conceptual proposal that questions the functioning of the literary field of his time. Likewise, his proposal can also be framed within the cultural criticism that the forgery tradition entails: it questions not only the difficult discernment between the concepts of truth and lies, but also the rigidity of some guardians of cultural institutions and the system of legitimation, awards, and literary reviews. Earthquakes pose substantial threats to communities worldwide. Understanding how people respond to the fast-changing environment during earthquakes is crucial for reducing risks and saving lives. This study aims to study people's protective action decision-making in earthquakes by leveraging explainable machine learning and video data. Specifically, this study first collected real-world CCTV footage and video postings from social media platforms, and then identified and annotated changes in the environment and people's behavioral responses during the M7.1 2018 Anchorage earthquake. By using the fully annotated video data, we applied XGBoost, a widely-used machine learning method, to model and forecast people's protective actions (e.g., drop and cover, hold on, and evacuate) during the earthquake. Then, explainable machine learning techniques were used to reveal the complex, nonlinear relationships between different factors and people's choices of protective actions. Modeling results confirm that social and environmental cues played critical roles in affecting the probability of different protective actions. Certain factors, such as the earthquake shaking intensity and number of people shown in the environment, displayed evident nonlinear relationships with the probability of choosing to evacuate. Atractilina Dearn. & Barthol. and Spiropes Cif. are genera of asexual fungi that comprise species mainly hyperparasitic on black mildews (Meliolales, Ascomycota). Although a common group of anamorphic fungi, they have been described up to now only by morphology and their systematic position is unknown. The present study provides a morphological treatise of all known species of Atractilina and Spiropes hyperparasitic on Meliolales, including insights into their systematic position, based on DNA sequences generated here for the first time. The study was conducted, based on 33 herbarium specimens and 23 specimens recently collected in Benin and Panama. The obtained DNA sequence data (28S rDNA and ITS rDNA) of A. parasitica and of two species of Spiropes show systematic placements in the Dothideomycetes and Leotiomycetes, respectively. The sequence data of the two Spiropes spp. do not group together. Moreover, the anamorph-teleomorph connection between Atractilina parasitica and Malacaria meliolicola, a pseudothecioid fungus, is confirmed. Three species in the genus Spiropes are proposed as new to science, namely S. angylocalycis, S. carpolobiae and S. croissantiformis. Four species are reported for Benin for the first time, three species for Panama and one species for mainland America. Atractilina and Spiropes are currently two genera with highly heterogeneous species and they might have to be split in the future, once the taxonomic concepts are validated by morphology and molecular sequence data. This study investigates the control and dynamic operation of the Unified Power Flow Controller made of shunt and series converters, a Static Synchronous Compensator, and a Static Synchronous Series Compensator, respectively, connected back-to-back through a common DC-link capacitor. The model of a 48-pulse Voltage Source Converter is constructed from a three-level Neutral Point Clamped converter, which allows the total harmonic distortion to be reduced. An optimal conduction angle tracking system of the three-level inverter is designed to minimize distortion by detecting proper harmonic component elimination. Starting from the six-step modulation strategy, the dq decoupled control schemes of both compensators in open and closed loops are presented. Finally, the MATLAB-Simulink model of the power flow controller is implemented and analyzed. The results show that the controller can track the power changes and apply a suitable voltage to the power system so that the power flow can be controlled. This way, the power flow controller dynamically improves the voltage and power quality across the power network while simultaneously improving the transient stability of the system. It can eliminate all system disturbances resulting from oscillations and harmonics in voltage and current within a very short time. The procedural approach used to model and simulate the Unified Power Flow Controller, as well as the new algorithm used to obtain the harmonic number that minimizes the total harmonic distortion, can be applied to any AC power system. Behavioral inhibition (BI) is a temperamental trait characterized by a consistent pattern of behavioral and emotional responses to unfamiliar people and novel situations. BI exhibits moderate stability across development and is considered a risk factor for the emergence of emotional disorders in adolescence and adulthood, making early assessment crucial for understanding this behavioral pattern. In the Portuguese context, there is a paucity of measures specifically designed to assess BI in childhood. To address this gap, we aimed to adapt and examine the psychometric properties of the Behavioral Inhibition Questionnaire (BIQ) in Portuguese children. We obtained BIQ ratings from both parents and teachers of 435 children (average age = 57.1 months; SD = 13.8). Confirmatory factor analysis supported a six-factor measurement model, each factor loading onto a higher-order BI factor. Additionally, we included a method factor to account for reversed items. Full scalar measurement invariance across gender and age groups was supported. Parents and teachers showed good agreement in their ratings of BIQ scores. Comparisons with other instruments revealed good convergent validity. The BIQ scores showed acceptable reliability, although the subscales exhibited limited sensitivity in discriminating between different contexts where BI may manifest. Currently, the electrification of transport networks is one of the initiatives being performed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Despite the rapid advancement of power electronic systems for electrified transportation systems, their integration into the AC power grid generates a variety of quality issues in the electrical distribution system. Among the possible solutions to this challenge is the inclusion of continuous storage systems, which can be located either onboard or offboard. The rapid development of energy storage devices has enabled the creation of numerous solutions that are leading to ever-increasing energy consumption efficiency, particularly when two or more of these storage systems are linked in a cascade and a hybrid mode. The various energy storage systems that can be integrated into vehicle charging systems (cars, buses, and trains) are investigated in this study, as are their electrical models and the various hybrid storage systems that are available. Background: The main objective of this study was to compare the clinical efficacy of two different devices, the Eptamed elastodontic device and a common bite sold in pharmacies, by assessing a computer aid evaluation of patients' surface electromyography (sEMG) and kinesiography activity of four pairs of masticatory and postural muscles (anterior temporalis, digastricus, masseters and sternocleidomastoids muscles) before and after 6 months of treatment. Materials and Methods: Twelve adult patients with temporomandibular disorders and in need of orthodontic treatment were enrolled in the study and divided into cases and controls. Cases underwent orthodontic treatment with the Eptamed elastodontic device, while controls were treated with a bite sold in pharmacies. Both groups underwent electromyographic and kinesiographic examinations before and after 6 months from the start of treatment. Results: The Eptamed device was found to guarantee an improvement in the electrical activity of the muscles examined. The subjects in the control group, on the other hand, had a general worsening of electrical activity after wearing a splint purchased in a pharmacy. As for the kinesiographic examination, there was no significant improvement in both groups. Conclusions: the use of the Eptamed device in subjects with TMD ensured a greater relaxation of the chewing muscles than a standard bite, effectively reducing the risk of worsening the symptomatology of temporomandibular disorders. In recent years, researchers have emphasized the relevance of data about commonsense moral judgments for ethical decision-making, notably in the context of debates about autonomous vehicles (AVs). As such, the results of empirical studies such as the Machine Moral Experiment have been influential in debates about the ethics of AVs and some researchers have even put forward methods to automatize ethical decision-making on the basis of such data. In this paper, we argue that data collection is not a neutral process, and the difference in study design can change participants' answers and the ethical conclusions that can be drawn from them. After showing that participants' individual answers are stable in the sense that providing them with a second occasion to reflect on their answers does not change them (Study 1), we show that different conclusions regarding participants' moral preferences can be reached when participants are given a third option allowing AVs to behave randomly (Study 2), and that preference for this third option can be increased in the context of a collective discussion (Study 3). We conclude that design choices will influence the lessons that can be drawn from surveys about participants' moral judgments about AVs and that these choices are not morally neutral. There is a statement that runs through the literature on consumer culture, one that contrasts tribal logic with market logic and asserts that they cannot be combined. This statement has become a black box of our discipline, in the Latourian sense of the term. This is especially visible when scholars are interested in tribal entrepreneurship. We want to open up this black box by interpreting the life of a mountain speleologist who invented a drilling tool that he started to produce in small batches and then made into a commercial success while continuing to practice his hobby with his tribe. Our paper shows that the binary opposition between the tribal logic and the market logic does not really exist in the experiences of tribal entrepreneurs. Indeed, our findings show they are often confronted with a multitude of logics, taking advantage of this multiplicity to navigate between apparently diverging logics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to produce evidence on the performance of horticultural systems in the peri-urban area of Buenos Aires (Argentina), based on the 10 Elements of Agroecology with an emphasis on soil health. To this end, we performed a survey with the Tool for Agroecology Performance Evaluation (TAPE) Step 1, and we measured soil physical, chemical, and biological properties in family farms self-defined as agroecological or conventional. Results reflected overall low transition-to-agroecology indices and poor soil quality in the studied area. However, self-defined agroecological systems have made significant strides toward agroecological transition with higher scores mainly affecting Elements describing management and innovation aspects of the agroecological transition but also those describing the social aspects and the enabling environment. Finally, self-defined agroecological farms exhibit better soil health scores for the indicators aggregates stability, soil organic carbon, and soil basal respiration, than conventional farms. Nevertheless, there is still potential to be exploited and constraints to be overcome to improve the transition to agroecology of horticultural systems in this area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the involvement of the superior pharyngeal constrictor muscle (SPCM) evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on outcome in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (OPSCCs). Methods: A retrospective study including consecutive patients with OPSCC treated with curative intent. Results: A total of 82 consecutive patients with OPSCC met inclusion criteria. At multivariate analysis, patients with SPCM infiltration were at significantly higher risk of death (HR: 3.37, CI: 1.21–9.38) and progression (HR: 3.39, CI: 1.38–8.32). In a multivariate model conditioned on HPV status, a significantly higher risk of death and progression was observed by combining both SPCM and HPV status with patients harboring an HPV‐negative OPSCC with SPCM infiltration showing the poorest outcome. Conclusion: MRI evidence of SPCM involvement significantly and independently increases the risk of death and progression in subjects with OPSCC. Considering both MRI‐assessed SPCM infiltration and HPV status significantly improved risk stratification in these malignancies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vitiligo is a complex disease with a multifactorial nature and a high impact on the quality of life of patients. Although there are multiple therapeutic alternatives, there is currently no fully effective treatment for this disease. In the current era, multiple drugs are being developed for the treatment of autoimmune diseases. This review assesses the available evidence on the pathogenesis of vitiligo, and a comprehensive review of treatments available for vitiligo now and in the near future is provided. This qualitative analysis spans 116 articles. We reviewed the mechanism of action, efficacy and safety data of phototherapy, afamelanotide, cyclosporine, phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitors, trichloroacetic acid, basic fibroblast growth factor, tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors, secukinumab, pseudocatalase and janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors. At the moment, there is no clearly outstanding option or fully satisfactory treatment for vitiligo, so it is necessary to keep up the development of new drugs as well as the publication of long-term effectiveness and safety data for existing treatments. Previous reports have indicated the reciprocal effects of nicotine and ethanol on their rewarding and reinforcing properties, but studies using methodological approaches resembling substance use in vulnerable populations are lacking. In our study, rats first self-administered ethanol, and their sensitivity to ethanol's reinforcing effects was assessed using a reinforcer demand modeling approach. Subsequently, rats were equipped with intravenous catheters to self-administer nicotine, and their sensitivity to nicotine's reinforcing effects was evaluated using the same approach. In the final phase, rats were allowed to self-administer ethanol and nicotine concurrently, investigating the influence of one substance on the rate of responding for the other substance. Group analyses revealed notable differences in demand among sucrose, sweetened ethanol, and ethanolalone, with sucrose demonstrating the highest demand and ethanol-alone exhibiting greater sensitivity to changes in cost. At the individual level, our study finds significant correlations between rats' demand for sucrose and sweetened ethanol, suggesting parallel efforts for both substances. Our individual data also suggest interconnections in the elasticity of demand for sweetened ethanol and ethanol-alone, as well as a potential relationship in price response patterns between ethanol and nicotine. Furthermore, concurrent self-administration of ethanol and nicotine at the group level displayed reciprocal effects, with reduced responding for nicotine in the presence of ethanol and increased responding for ethanol in the presence of nicotine. This study provides valuable insights into modeling the co-use of ethanol and nicotine and assessing their interaction effects using reinforcer demand modeling and concurrent self-administration or noncontingent administration tests. These findings contribute to our understanding of the complex interplay between ethanol and nicotine and have implications for elucidating the underlying mechanisms involved in polydrug use. Distributed energy resources (DERs), such as photovoltaic (PV) sources, together with storage systems, such as battery energy storage systems (BESS), are increasingly present and necessary in our electricity distribution networks. Furthermore, the need for efficient use of energy from DERs, especially in developing countries and remote communities, must be addressed with the development of nanogrids (NGs), particularly DC NGs, and standalone PV systems with adequate control strategies. This paper investigates the control and dynamic operation of a standalone PV system. It consists mainly of three DC–DC power converters for the PV source interface, battery management, and load voltage control. A two-level modulation scheme is applied to each of these converters to switch them ON and OFF. A maximum power point tracking (MPPT) closed-loop voltage control system is implemented to make sure that the PV operates at optimum power regardless of the irradiance level or temperature, while battery voltage and load-side voltage control are also implemented to indirectly provide the required load power. The control of each of the converters is achieved by deriving their small-signal models using a state-space approach from which various control objectives are implemented. The DC-link is clamped by a BESS which acts as a backup source to provide power to the DC load in the absence of sufficient power from the PV panel. The dynamic operation of the whole system is enhanced by proposing a robust feedforward scheme that improves the response of the system in the presence of disturbances. The search for efficient, re-absorption-free scintillators has recently focused the attention on antimony-based halides, which exhibit largely Stokes shifted luminescence due to radiative recombination of excitons self-trapped (STE) in strongly Jahn-Teller distorted Sb3+ color centers. Here, the synthesis of a hybrid structure is reported with chemical formula (C13H14N3)3SbCl6 consisting of spatially isolated [SbCl6]3- octahedra separated by organic N, N'-diphenylguanidinium (Gua) molecules. The optical properties of this material are mainly determined by the inorganic component and are characterized by a pronounced Stokes shift of "1.3 eV and a room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) efficiency of up to 85%. Remarkably, highly efficient radioluminescence (RL) is observed with scintillation light yields of "2000 ph MeV-1 using both soft X-rays and a 124 keV gamma source. Temperature-dependent PL and RL measurements confirm the minor role of non-radiative channels, which are completely suppressed below 100 K. Thermally stimulated luminescence measurements suggest that the traps in Gua3SbCl6 crystals have a significantly large energy depth distribution below the absorbing state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SiO 2 is a promising material for developing high-capacity anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, microstructural changes of SiO 2 anodes at the particle and electrode level upon prolonged cycling remains unclear. In this work, the causes leading to capacity fade on SiO 2 anodes were investigated and simple strategies to attenuate anode degradation were explored. Nanostructured SiO 2 from diatomaceous earth was integrated into anodes containing different quantities of conductive carbon in the form of either a conductive additive or a nanometric coating layer. Galvanostatic cycling was conducted for 200 cycles and distinctive trends on capacity fade were identified. A thorough analysis of the anodes at selected cycle numbers was performed using a toolset of characterization techniques, including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, FIB-SEM cross-sectional analysis and TEM inspections. Significant fragmentation of SiO 2 particles surface and formation of filigree structures upon cycling are reported for the first time. Morphological changes are accompanied by an increase in impedance and a loss of electroactive surface area. Carbon-coating is found to restrict particle fracture and to increase capacity retention to 66%, compared to 47% for uncoated samples after 200 cycles. Floods have a devastating impact on developing nations. The focus of current resilience models is predominantly developed countries, and less is known regarding how they might perform in other contexts. This paper presents a comparative case study in Bangladesh using two established hazard resilience models: the Disaster Resilience of Place (DROP) Model and the Spatially Explicit Resilience-Vulnerability (SERV) model. Using publicly available data, we applied the two models at the district level in the context of flooding, the most extensive hazard in Bangladesh. The results of our model implementations were evaluated by Bangladeshi emergency managers and researchers regarding their potential utility. Whereas emergency managers preferred the SERV model results, researchers thought the DROP model results were preferable. The phenomenon of brand communities has been well documented by researchers during the last two decades; however, little attention has been paid to the phase during which brand communities first emerge. Facilitating this emergence is particularly crucial for businesses operating in countries or regions in which large segments of the consumer population live at the bottom of the pyramid (BoP). But how can a brand community be generated in a BoP context? And how can organisations mobilise people living at the BoP to participate in creating and maintaining a brand community? To respond to these questions, we study the case of a Cameroonian music platform created in 2015 that was quickly able to mobilise Cameroonian music fans to spread its reputation by word of mouth and to produce content. The article addresses spiritual consumption from a corporal perspective, with a specific focus on pain and suffering as vehicles to a higher spiritual state. It applies a comparative auto-ethnography of the pain that people participating in two pilgrimages – the Camino de Santiago in France and Spain and the Quebec Compostela in Canada – feel in their toes and uses this to discuss how the experience and manifestation of pain actualises the spiritual experience. The results show that corporal pain transforms into a spiritual experience in the way that it connects to both the spiritual features associated with a particular context and the spiritual capital of the person experiencing the pain. They also reveal that displaying corporal pain during rituals – much like the sense of communion that is generated through the act of sharing – fosters further transformations leading to spiritual experiences. This article examines the determinants of the growing political salience of minimum wages in European party manifestos. By using multilingual quantitative text analysis, I show that the electoral salience of minimum wages has increased in the past decades. Although left-wing parties emphasize minimum wages more than right-wing parties, I find that the electoral salience of this policy follows a U-shaped relationship: right-wing populist parties dedicate greater attention to minimum wages than centre-right parties do. A sentiment analysis finds that compared to other policies designed to supplement the income of low-wage workers, such as strengthening collective bargaining institutions and in-work benefits/wage subsidies, there do not seem to be specific party-political characteristics, which determine the sentiment with which discussions on minimum wages are framed. Understory biomass plays an important role in forests, and explicit characterizations of live and dead understory vegetation are critical for wildland fuel characterization and to link understory vegetation to ecosystem processes. Current methods to accurately model understory fuel complexity in 3D rely on expensive and often inaccessible technologies. Structure-from-motion close-range photogrammetry, in which ordinary photographs or video stills are overlaid to generate point clouds, is promising as an alternative method to generate 3D models of fuels at a fraction of the cost of more traditional field surveys. In this study, we compared the performance of close-range photogrammetry with field sampling surveys to assess the utility of this alternative technique for quantifying understory fuel structure. Using a commercially available GoPro camera, we generated 3D point cloud models from video-derived image stills of 138 sampling plots across two western ponderosa pine and two southeastern slash pine sites. We directly compared structural metrics derived from the photogrammetry to those derived from field sampling, then evaluated predictive models of biomass calibrated by means of destructive sampling. Photogrammetry-derived measures of occupied volume and fuel height showed strong agreements with field sampling (Pearson's R = 0.81 and 0.86, respectively). While we found weak relationships between photogrammetry metrics and biomass 0 to 10 cm in height, occupied volume and a novel metric to characterize the vertical profile of vegetation produced the strongest relationships with biomass above the litter layer (i.e., >10 cm) across different fuel types (R2 = 0.55–0.76). The application of this technique has the potential to provide managers with an accessible option for inexpensive data collection and can lay the groundwork for the rapid collection of input datasets to train landscape-scale fuel models.
