The memory of crystalline phase in the melt of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) in regiodefective samples of iPP characterized by different concentrations regiodefects, constituted by secondary 2,1 propene units, is studied. The self‐nucleation (SN) experiments have demonstrated that the presence of 2,1 regiodefects produces a strong memory of the crystalline phase in the melt that persists up to temperatures much higher than the melting temperature. The extension of the heterogeneous melt (domain II) containing self‐nuclei increases with increasing the concentration of regiodefects. The higher the concentration of regiodefects the higher the temperature at which the self‐nuclei are dissolved and the homogeneous melt is achieved. This demonstrates that a strong memory of the crystalline phase of iPP in the melt exists not only in copolymers with noncrystallizable bulky comonomeric units rejected from the crystals but even when small defects are largely included in the crystals. The stereoelectronic factors responsible for stereoselectivity in propene polymerization with several metallocene and post–metallocene transition metal catalysts have been revisited using a combined approach of DFT calculations, the Activation Strain Model, Natural Energy Decomposition Analysis and a molecular descriptor (%VBur). There are in most cases two different paths leading to the formation of stereoerrors (SE), and the classical model does not suffice to fully understand stereoregulation. Improving stereoselectivity requires raising the energies of both SE insertion transition states. Our analyses show that the degrees of deformation of the active site (catalyst+chain) and the prochiral monomer differ for these two paths, and between different catalyst classes. Based on such analyses we discuss: a) the subtle differences in SE formation between stereoselective catalysts with different ligand frameworks; b) the reason for exceptional stereoselectivity reported for a special ansa–metallocene catalyst; c) the (double) stereocontrol origin for isoselective catalysts; d) the electronic contribution for isoselective catalysts generating SE by a modification of the ligand wrapping mode during the polymerization. Isotactic poly (1-butene) (iPB) is an interesting semi-crystalline thermoplastic material characterized by notable physical and mechanical attributes encompassing superior creep and stress resistance, elevated toughness, stiffness, and thermal endurance. These distinctive features position iPB as a viable candidate for specific applications; however, its widespread utilization is hindered by certain inherent limitations. Indeed, iPB manifests an intricate polymorphic behavior, and the gradual and spontaneous transition of the kinetically favored form II to the thermodynamically favored form I during aging introduces alterations to the material's properties. Despite its potential, the attainment of iPB with an exceedingly high molecular mass remains elusive, particularly when employing homogeneous catalysts renowned for their efficacy in propene polymerization. In this study we analyze the mechanistic aspects governing 1-butene polymerization by using DFT calculations modelling the regioselectivity of 1-butene insertions and the termination reactions occurring after primary (1,2) and secondary (2,1) insertions. Finally, the isomerization pathways leading to the formation of 4,1 units in iPB samples synthesized by homogenous catalysts is also discussed. The homogeneous non-catalytic hydrogenation of several types of iso- and syndiotactic cis-1,4 poly(1,3-diene)s with diimide, formed by thermal decomposition of p-toluene-sulfonyl-hydrazide, was examined. Perfectly alternating ethylene/1-alkene copolymers having different tacticity (i.e., isotactic and syndiotactic), which in some cases are difficult to synthesize by simple stereospecific co-polymerization of the corresponding monomers, were obtained. All the copolymers synthesized were fully characterized from a structural, morphological, and rheological point of view through different analytical techniques (FT-IR, NMR, GPC, DSC, RX). The low percentage of recyclability of the polymeric materials obtained by olefin transition metal (TM) polymerization catalysis has increased the interest in their substitution with more eco-friendly materials with reliable physical and mechanical properties. Among the variety of known biodegradable polymers, linear aliphatic polyesters produced by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters occupy a prominent position. The polymer properties are highly dependent on the macromolecule microstructure, and the control of stereoselectivity is necessary for providing materials with precise and finely tuned properties. In this review, we aim to outline the main synthetic routes, the physical properties and also the applications of three commercially available biodegradable materials: Polylactic acid (PLA), Poly(Lactic-co-Glycolic Acid) (PLGA), and Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB), all of three easily accessible via ROP. In this framework, understanding the origin of enantioselectivity and the factors that determine it is then crucial for the development of materials with suitable thermal and mechanical properties. A density functional theory (DFT) study combined with the steric maps of buried volume (%VBur) as molecular descriptors and an energy decomposition analysis through the ASM (activation strain model)–NEDA (natural energy decomposition analysis) approach were applied to investigate the origins of stereoselectivity for propene polymerization promoted by pyridylamido-type nonmetallocene systems. The relationships between the fine tuning of the ligand and the propene stereoregularity were rationalized (e.g., the metallacycle size, chemical nature of the bridge, and substituents at the ortho-position on the aniline moieties). The DFT calculations and %VBur steric maps reproduced the experimental trend: substituents on the bridge and on the ortho-positions of aniline fragments enhance the stereoselectivity. The crystallization behavior of propene–ethylene (iPPC2), propene–butene (iPPC4), propene–pentene (iPPC5), and propene–hexene (iPPC6) isotactic copolymers, prepared with single center metallocene catalysis, is described. Thanks to the perfectly random distribution of comonomers along the macromolecules, these copolymers can be considered as model for the crystallization behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) that is mainly defined by the average length of the regular propene sequences. A model of the crystallization behavior of iPP is described based on the definition of a double effect of defects (stereodefects and comonomers), the interruption effect of defects excluded from the crystals that shortens the length of the crystallizable propene sequences inducing crystallization of the γ form, and the effect of inclusion of defects in the crystals of α form, γ form or δ form that induces the crystallization of the form whose lattice is less disturbed by the defect. The crystallization behavior of random propene-octene isotactic copolymers (iPPC8) prepared with a homogeneous metallocene catalyst has been studied. Samples of iPPC8 with low octene content up to about 7 mol% were isothermally crystallized from the melt at various crystallization temperatures. The samples crystallize in mixtures of the α and γ forms of isotactic polypropylene (iPP). The relative amount of γ form increases with increasing crystallization temperature, and a maximum amount of γ form (fγ(max)) is achieved for each sample. The crystallization behavior of iPPC8 copolymers is compared with the crystallization from the melt of propene–ethylene, propene–butene, propene–pentene, and propene–hexene copolymers. The results show that the behavior of iPPC8 copolymers is completely different from those described in the literature for the other copolymers of iPP. In fact, the maximum amount of γ form achieved in samples of different copolymers of iPP generally increases with increasing comonomer content, while in iPPC8 copolymers the maximum amount of γ form decreases with increasing octene content. The different behaviors are discussed based on the inclusion of co-monomeric units in the crystals of α and γ forms of iPP or their exclusion from the crystals. In iPPC8 copolymers, octene units are excluded from the crystals giving only the interruption effect that shortens the length of regular propene sequences, inducing crystallization of the γ form at low octene concentrations, lower than 2 mol%. Random isotactic propene-butene copolymers (iPPC4) of different stereoregularity have been synthesized with three different homogeneous single center metallocene catalysts having different stereoselectivity. All samples crystallize from the polymerization solution in mixtures of α and γ forms, and the relative amount of γ form increases with increasing concentrations of butene and of rr stereodefects. All samples crystallize from the melt in mixtures of α and γ forms and the fraction of γ form increases with decreasing cooling rate. At high cooling rates, the crystallization of the α form is always favored, even for samples that contain high total concentration of defects that should crystallize in the γ form. The results demonstrate that in iPPs containing significant concentrations of defects, such as stereodefects and comonomeric units, the γ form is the thermodynamically stable form of iPP and crystallizes in selective conditions of very slow crystallization, whereas the α form is the kinetically favored form and crystallizes in conditions of fast crystallization. A study of the structure and morphology of diblock copolymers composed of crystallizable blocks of polyethylene (PE) and syndiotactic polypropylene (sPP) having different lengths is reported. In both analyzed samples, the PE block crystallizes first by cooling from the melt (at 130 °C) and the sPP block crystallizes after at a lower temperature. Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) recorded during cooling showed three correlation peaks at values of the scattering vector, q1 = 0.12 nm−1, q2 = 0.24 nm−1 and q3 = 0.4 nm−1, indicating development of a lamellar morphology, where lamellar domains of PE and sPP alternate, each domain containing stacks of crystalline lamellae of PE or sPP sandwiched by their own amorphous phase of PE or sPP. At temperatures higher than 120 °C, when only PE crystals are formed, the morphology is defined by the formation of stacks of PE lamellae (17 nm thick) alternating with amorphous layers and with a long period of nearly 52 nm. At lower temperatures, when crystals of sPP are also well-formed, the morphology is more complex. A model of the morphology at room temperature is proposed based on the correlation distances determined from the self-correlation functions extracted from the SAXS data. Lamellar domains of PE (41.5 nm thick) and sPP (8.2 nm thick) alternate, each domain containing stacks of crystalline lamellae sandwiched by their own amorphous phase, forming a global morphology having a total lamellar periodicity of 49.7 nm, characterized by alternating amorphous and crystalline layers, where the crystalline layers are alternatively made of stacks of PE lamellae (22 nm thick) and thinner sPP lamellae (only 3.5 nm thick). It is still problematic to define a direct relationship between specific properties of a nanostructured surface (e.g., wettability) and its morphology. Not surprisingly, scientists continue to explore en masse the cut‐and‐try method. In this work, new insights are presented into the correlation of functional properties of the complex nanocomposites with their morphological characteristics. Using polyethylene‐terephthalate (PET) as a model material due to its importance and wide use in experiments, super‐hydrophilic nanocomposites amenable to be used in a variety of industrial applications are first developed, by exposing PET samples to oxygen plasma under controlled conditions. The morphology of the surfaces is confirmed using AFM and SEM techniques, and wettability in air and its oleophobic properties in water using contact angle and roll‐off measurements. Next, different analytical tools such as Minkowski connectivity (Euler‐Poincaré characteristic), Hough distributions and 2D FFT are applied to study ordering, connectivity, and fractal characteristics of the samples. It is concluded that fractal dimension, along with ordering and connectivity, are among the major characteristics of the nanocomposite that determine many important physical and chemical properties of the functional nanomaterials, and the fractal dimension could be a target morphological feature to inform the design of fabrication technology. As the advantageous properties of nanoparticles (NPs) often emerge only when appropriate coupling and exchange phenomena between the NPs can take place, the control of the inter-particle distance, regular ordering, and location of the nanoparticles onto solid supports is a critical issue. A robust method to control the spatial organization of NPs onto solid supports, based on the use of self-assembling di-block copolymers (BCPs) as structure-guiding material, is reported. Two different polystyrene-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PSb- PMMA) BCPs, characterized by a different PS volume fraction, were used as matrices for the fabrication of nanocomposite thin films with cylindrical and lamellar morphologies controlled at the nanoscale. Selective inclusion of surface functionalized gold (Au) and zinc oxide (ZnO) NPs of appropriate size in the PS nanodomains was achieved from dispersions of the BCPs and NPs in a common solvent. The orientation of the BCPs cylinder and lamellar nanodomains in spin-coated thin films was controlled by solvent and thermal annealing protocols, coupled with techniques of surface neutralization. The tacticity of vinyl polymer chains strongly affects the physical properties of polymeric materials, as example the chain conformations and stiffness. In the present work we tested how the hybrid Particle-Field Molecular Dynamics (PF-MD) technique is capable to describe conformational differences of polymer chains as function of the tacticity. In particular, we focus on tacticity effect of atactic, isotactic, and syndiotactic polypropylene (PP) homopolymer melts. We found that PF-MD simulations exhibit dependence of Flory's Characteristic Ratio from the fraction of racemo diads along the PP chains in qualitative agreement with Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) experiments and theoretical previsions. Finally, we calculated and compared the packing length parameter on very high stereoregular syndiotactic PP systems with rheological measurements. In this review, the phenomenon of polymorphism in polymers is discussed on the basis of the thermodynamic stability of different polymorphs that defines the conformations of chains in the crystalline lattice and the packing mode. In particular, we show that the symmetry and energy stability of the chain conformation, the crystal density and entropy of packing, and the presence of defects and disorder in the crystals are the main factors that define the mode of crystallization of polymers and induce polymorphism. How specific polymorphs are selected and the effects of the molecular structure and processing conditions on polymorphism are analyzed. How crystallization of particular polymorphs affects the material's properties and ultimate applications is also discussed. The polymorphic behaviors of isotactic polypropylene and poly(1‐butene) are described as examples of how processing and the controlled modification of the molecular structure of polyolefins using methods of controlled synthesis that allow controlled incorporation of configurational and constitutional defects may drive crystallization of a desired polymorph. The adsorption of myoglobin (Mb) onto nanoporous thin films build up using block‐copolymers (BCPs) is analyzed. The nanoporous thin films, fabricated by exploiting self‐assembly of lamellar BCPs and the concept of sacrificial block, are characterized by a well‐defined morphology containing nanochannels of width ≈20 nm delimited by polystyrene (PS) domains, decorated with pendant poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) chains. The adsorption of Mb onto the nanoporous material is studied by means of UV–visible spectroscopy, quartz crystal microbalance, and neutron reflectometry measurements. In order to determine the role of nanopores, experiments are also conducted by using supports made of nonporous PS thin films and nude glass slides. The results indicate that the BCP‐nanoporous material exhibits a remarkably higher adsorption capability than PS and glass. As PEO exhibits a low degree of protein adsorption, this result may be essentially attributed to the presence of the nanopores. The large surface area, the opened pore structure, and the trapping effect of the pores are the main factors determining the increased Mb adsorption capability of the BCP‐based support. Yet, the presence of PEO chains decorating the PS walls at porous surface does not prevent Mb biomolecules to establish good interactions with the support. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of a highly oriented fiber morphology by effect of tensile deformation of stereodefective isotactic polypropylene (iPP) samples, starting from the unoriented form, is studied by following the transformation in real time during stretching through wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) measurements. In the stretching process, after yielding, the initial form transforms into the mesomorphic form of iPP through mechanical melting and re-crystallization. The analysis of the scattering invariant measured in theWAXS region highlights that the size of the mesomorphic domains included in the well oriented fiber morphology obtained at high deformations increases through a process which involves the coalescence of the small fragments formed by effect of tensile stress during lamellar destruction with the domain of higher dimensions. The determination of the chemical composition of different parts of wall paintings (pigments, mortars and binders) provides information about technology of preparation of an artefact. Herein, we present a multi-methodological characterisation of wall paintings from a Roman archaeological site in Cuma, focusing on differences between an indoor ( domus) and outdoor fabrication (a temple, Tempio con Portico (TCP)). Both pigments, binders and mortars were studied via a combination of destructive/μ-destructive (mass spectrometry, ionic chromatography, ICP-based techniques) and non-destructive (Raman microscopy, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and X-ray diffraction) methodologies. Particularly, the systematic presence of dolomite only in mortars from TCP may suggest an intentional use of such limestone for the outdoor fabrication of public interest. Differences between TCP and domus are also related to the composition of the pigment binder. In particular, the detected binders (studied by LC-MS/MS and GC-MS) were proteinaceous in the case of domus (possibly egg and animal glue) and drying oils in the case of TCP. Ultimately, our multi-methodological study provides an overall picture of the material components of paintings from fabrications with different use, proposing a hypothesis on technological choices according to conservative and destination reasons. Block-copolymers (BCPs) self-assembling provides a unique tool for realizing large-area ordered metamaterials with desired optical properties due to the rich range of tunable nano-morphologies and to the chemical properties of the block polymers that can lead to the selective inclusion of functionalized nanoparticles (NPs) in specific nanodomains, generating periodic arrays of NPs according to the geometry of the BCP acting as template. In this work, we investigate nanostructured thin films of polystyrene- block-poly(methylmethacrylate) (PS-PMMA) BCP filled with functionalized metallic (Au) nanoparticles. The BCP is characterized by an hexagonal array of PS cylinders in the PMMA matrix and the Au NPs are selectively included in the PS cylindrical domains. The optical properties of such nano-structures are strongly affected by localized surface plasmons (LSPs) in the NPs. We theoretically demonstrate that the optical properties of such nano-structures can be tuned by varying the NPs loading concentration and the NPs radius. Then, we investigate the effects of the hexagonal geometry on the collective plasmonic oscillations. We fabricated the PS-PMMA/Au NPs composite and we experimentally demonstrate the existence of collective plasmonic resonances of gold nanoparticles after an electromagnetic stimulation, arising from the ordered arrangement of AuNPs in the periodic array of hexagonally packed cylinders created by BCP self-assembly. This approach allows a fine modulation of the NPs optical properties and can be used as an intriguing and versatile tool to build useful devices for Optics & Photonics applications, with significant benefits for both fundamental and applied investigations. We report the synthesis and the crystal structure of isotactic poly((R,S)-3-methyl-1-pentene) (iP(R,S)3MP). A purely random achiral copolymer of two enantiomeric (R) and (S) 3-methyl-1-pentene monomers cannot be obtained by polymerization of the racemic mixture of the (R) and (S) monomers but has been obtained by stereospecific polymerization of 3-methyl-1,3-pentadiene to isotactic 1,2-poly(3-methyl-1,3-pentadiene) (iP3MPD12) and successive hydrogenation. The crystal structures of achiral iP(R,S)3MP and chiral poly((S)-3-methyl-1-pentene) (iP(S)3MP) are different, indicating that crystal structures of polymers may be driven by different entropic effects related to chirality and type of crystal disorder. The conformational disorder of the chiral lateral groups prevails in chiral iP(S)3MP, inducing crystallization of chains of one helical chirality, whereas the entropic effect due to the statistical substitution of chains of different helical chirality in the sites of the lattice prevails in achiral iP(R,S)3MP. A strategy to tailor the properties of isotactic polypropylene, based on the combination of the crystallization of the mesophase and the control of the molecular structure and concentration of stereodefects via polymerization with metallocene catalysts, is presented. The mechanical properties can be modulated through the conventional slow crystallization from the melt in the α and γ forms, depending on the concentration of stereodefects, or the crystallization of the mesophase by melt quenching. The most stereoirregular sample with rr concentration of 11% shows elastic behavior either when it is slowly crystallized in the γ form or when it is crystallized in the mesomorphic form, but with remarkable differences in the values of the modulus and tensile strength. The crystal structure of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) co-crystals of δ-class is discussed with the aim of identifying molecular descriptors that allow predicting the lattice distortions induced by the inclusion of guest molecules inside the cavities of the nanoporous δ-form. Based on the consideration that monoclinic and triclinic clathrates and intercalates of sPS form as a result of the unique deformability of the cavities of the δ-form, the identified parameters are the fractional occupancy factors of the undeformed cavity of the δ-form from guests along the a-axis, the c-axis, and the normal to the (010) planes of the crystals, and the relative orientation of the guests to the chain axes. A novel approach for the study of the nature of the active species in Ziegler- Natta catalysis is described. This approach is based on the study of reliable structural models for disordered (MgCl2)~ polynuclear species which develop during the preparation of MgC12-supported catalysts starting from MgCI2- Lewis-base adducts, and the calculation of X-ray diffraction patterns of these models. A method for the calculation of the X-ray powder diffraction patterns of the model structures is devised. This diffraction modelling method may be useful for the correct interpretation of the nature of some diffraction features in the X-ray diffraction patterns recorded during the structural evolution of MgCI2- Lewis-base adducts, which occurs in the preparation of the catalyst systems used for Ziegler-Natta polymerization of olefins. Crystalline polymers may be affected by various kinds and amounts of structural disorder. Lack of order in polymer crystals may arise from the presence of defects in the chemical constitution, configuration and conformation and defects in the mode of packing of chains inside the crystals. Polymeric materials characterized by long range order in the parallel arrangement of chain axes and a large amount of structural disorder may be considered as solid mesophases. The different kinds and amount of disorder present in the solid mesophases of semicrystalline polymers and the possible types of solid mesophases are discussed in terms of idealized limit models of disorder. These models imply maintenance of long-range positional order, at least along one dimension, of structural features which are not necessarily point centered. Structural features, which are not point centered, are for instance chain axes, the center of mass of special groups of atoms or bundles of chains and so on. Structural aspects emerging from the X-ray diffraction analysis of several solid mesophases discussed so far in the literature are reviewed, in the light of the present analysis.
