Few studies have explored meaning in life as a mediator between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and mental health. This study examined the protective and risk factors associated with meaning in life, as they mediate the effect of ACEs on mental health. The sample was 293 university students in Hong Kong (mean age = 21 years). The results of analyses based on three‐wave longitudinal data and structural equation modeling demonstrated that the presence of meaning mediated the negative association between ACEs and happiness, and that meaning confusion mediated the positive association between ACEs and depression and anxiety. This study provides evidence that the presence of meaning may play a protective role and that meaning confusion may be a risk factor for the effects of ACEs on mental health. This study's results have implications for the development of prevention and intervention strategies to alleviate the detrimental impact of ACEs and promote mental health in young adults. This study explored diethanolammonium chloride ([DEA]Cl) as a potential ionic liquid from low‐cost and commercial ones for gas separation. There are three kinds of functional sites in [DEA]Cl: acidic NH2+, hydrogen‐bond OH, and nucleophilic Cl−. The separation of NH3/N2/H2, SO2/CO2/N2, and H2S/CO2/CH4 was considered, because the three mixtures are extensively involved in many industrial processes. The experimental results demonstrated that [DEA]Cl exhibited excellent ability to separate the mixture of NH3/N2/H2. The [DEA]Cl also exhibited the proper capacity to separate SO2/CO2/N2, but the capacity of [DEA]Cl for the separation of H2S/CO2/CH4 was inferior. The theoretical calculations revealed that NH2+ and OH worked synergistically to contribute to the ability of [DEA]Cl for excellent separation of NH3 from NH3/N2/H2, with Cl− contributing to the proper separation of SO2 from SO2/CO2/N2. Objectives: There are inconsistent findings about the relationship between impermanence and psychological health. In order to gain a deeper understanding of this relationship, the present study utilized a person-centered approach to investigate the interplay between awareness and acceptance of impermanence and its impact on mental health outcomes. Method: A total of 433 Chinese university students (73.2% female; age M = 19.73 years, SD = 1.90) completed a battery of measures on impermanence awareness and acceptance, anxiety, depression, everyday stress, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and life satisfaction. To identify profiles of impermanence, latent profile analysis was performed using the item scores from the Impermanence Awareness and Acceptance Scale. Results: Three profiles were identified: (1) Neutral Stance of Impermanence (NSI; 32.8%), (2) High Awareness and Acceptance (HAA; 16.9%), and (3) High Awareness Without Acceptance (HAWA; 50.3%). The HAWA profile had the highest levels of anxiety, depression, everyday stress, posttraumatic stress disorder among three profiles, followed by the NSI and HAA profile, respectively. In addition, the HAWA profile had lower levels of life satisfaction compared to the HAA profile, but the HAWA and HAA profiles did not have significant difference in life satisfaction when comparing with the NSI profile. Conclusions: The HAWA and HAA profiles had the highest and lowest risk of mental health problems, respectively. The findings of this study significantly enhance our understanding of the different group types among Chinese university students who embrace the perspective of impermanence, as well as their relationships with various psychological outcomes. Although the negative impact of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on psychological distress is broadly consistent across the literature, the psychological mechanisms underpinning this relationship need further exploration. Pain paradox theory has postulated the important role of PTSD, avoidance strategies, mindfulness, and distress following trauma. However, a more comprehensive study is needed to understand their interactive effects over time. This current longitudinal study aimed to examine the associations between these factors. 201 participants completed the questionnaire survey (i.e., the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5, Toronto Alexithymia Scale, Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale, and the General Health Questionnaire) at two time points nine months apart. An autoregressive cross-lagged panel with structural equation modelling was used for data analysis. Initial PTSD symptoms predicted subsequent psychological distress. Initial mindfulness was significantly negatively correlated with subsequent alexithymia, PTSD, and distress outcomes. Furthermore, initial alexithymia was significantly positively associated with subsequent PTSD and distress. Following trauma exposure, individuals may develop PTSD that impairs mental health. However, individuals with higher levels of mindfulness tend to experience less alexithymia and PTSD symptoms, which in turn may lead to lower levels of psychological distress over time. Meanwhile, individuals with lower levels of difficulty identifying and describing emotions are less likely to develop PTSD symptoms and experience psychological distress over time. A new theoretical calculation method for the load-slip curve and the shear stiffness of the stud based on Winkler's elastic foundation beam theory and deflection differential equation of the stud is proposed. Different stress characteristics of the elastic and plastic zones of the concrete are considered in the proposed method. The accuracy of the theoretical calculation method is validated by the test results. Moreover, the effect of concrete strength, stud diameter, and yield strength on the stud load-slip curve is analyzed. The results show that the proposed model can effectively reflect the change process of the load-slip curve of the test specimen stud connector. The stud diameter, stud yield strength, and concrete strength affect the peak slip, shear stiffness, and shear capacity of stud shear connectors. With an increase in stud diameter, the peak slip, shear stiffness, and shear bearing capacity of the stud are all increased. An increase in the yield strength of the stud increases its elastic slip, peak slip, and shear capacity. Lastly, with an increase in concrete strength, the elastic slip and peak slip of the stud both decrease, whereas the shear stiffness and shear bearing capacity are increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To non‐invasively evaluate the Ki‐67 level in digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) images of breast cancer (BC) patients based on subregional radiomics. Methods: A total of 266 patients who underwent DBT scans were consecutively enrolled at two centers, between September 2017 and September 2021. The whole tumor region was partitioned into various intratumoral subregions, based on individual‐ and population‐level clustering. Handcrafted radiomics and deep learning‐based features were extracted from the subregions and from the whole tumor region, and were selected by least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression, yielding radiomics signatures (RSs). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity were calculated to assess the developed RSs. Results: Each breast tumor region was partitioned into an inner subregion (S1) and a marginal subregion (S2). The RSs derived from S1 always generated higher AUCs compared with those from S2 or from the whole tumor region (W), for the external validation cohort (AUCs, S1 vs. W, handcrafted RSs: 0.583 [95% CI, 0.429–0.727] vs. 0.559 [95% CI, 0.405–0.705], p‐value: 0.920; deep RSs: 0.670 [95% CI, 0.516–0.802] vs. 0.551 [95% CI, 0.397–0.698], p‐value: 0.776). The fusion RSs, combining handcrafted and deep learning‐based features derived from S1, yielded the highest AUCs of 0.820 (95% CI, 0.714–0.900) and 0.792 (95% CI, 0.647–0.897) for the internal and external validation cohorts, respectively. Conclusions: The subregional radiomics approach can accurately predict the Ki‐67 level based on DBT data; thus, it may be used as a potential non‐invasive tool for preoperative treatment planning in BC. Purpose: Teachers' mental health is concerning due to high stress at work. Its association with job-related stressors has been well-documented. Little is known; however, about how traumatic life events and trauma reactions might contribute to their psychological distress. This paper is to explore whether Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) following past traumatic event would predict burnout and psychiatric co-morbidity among Chinese k-12 school teachers and whether this prediction would be mediated by forgiveness after controlling for work-related factors. Methods: Two hundred and seventy-nine Chinese teachers (F = 223, M = 56) from primary and secondary schools completed demographic information, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), Heartland Forgiveness Scale (HFS), General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28), Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educator's Survey (MBI-ES), and a series of measures assessing work-related factors. Results: Structured equation modeling (SEM) showed that after controlling for work-related factors, PTSD following past trauma was positively associated with burnout and general psychological problems but negatively associated with levels of forgiveness. Forgiveness carried the impact of PTSD onto burnout rather than general psychological distress. Conclusion: To conclude, regardless of the level of stress experienced from working in school, primary and secondary teachers with PTSD from past trauma found it more difficult forgiving which in turn could affect their levels of burnout. The thermal stability of proteins can be altered when they interact with small molecules, other biomolecules or are subject to post-translation modifications. Thus monitoring the thermal stability of proteins under various cellular perturbations can provide insights into protein function, as well as potentially determine drug targets and off-targets. Thermal proteome profiling is a highly multiplexed mass-spectrommetry method for monitoring the melting behaviour of thousands of proteins in a single experiment. In essence, thermal proteome profiling assumes that proteins denature upon heating and hence become insoluble. Thus, by tracking the relative solubility of proteins at sequentially increasing temperatures, one can report on the thermal stability of a protein. Standard thermodynamics predicts a sigmoidal relationship between temperature and relative solubility and this is the basis of current robust statistical procedures. However, current methods do not model deviations from this behaviour and they do not quantify uncertainty in the melting profiles. To overcome these challenges, we propose the application of Bayesian functional data analysis tools which allow complex temperature-solubility behaviours. Our methods have improved sensitivity over the state-of-the art, identify new drug-protein associations and have less restrictive assumptions than current approaches. Our methods allows for comprehensive analysis of proteins that deviate from the predicted sigmoid behaviour and we uncover potentially biphasic phenomena with a series of published datasets. Fang et al. develop a Bayesian data analysis approach that is better suited to the analysis of Thermal Proteome Profiling (TPP) data than existing data analysis approaches that have limitations with respect to deviations from the expected sigmoid data behaviour. Study engagement has been considered a key predictor of school performance among students. Although the potential contribution of positive psychology to education has been recognised, the research findings and implications related to primary school students remain largely unexplored. Given that authentic happiness theory and the broaden-and-build theory have posited the important roles of positive emotions, meaning, engagement and strengths use in education, a more comprehensive study is needed to understand their interactions across time. The current longitudinal study examined the interrelationships between these positive attributes among Chinese students in Hong Kong, China. A total of 786 primary school students from Grades 4 to 6 completed the questionnaire survey at two time points one year apart. An autoregressive cross-lagged panel (ARCL) with structural equation modelling was applied for the data analysis. The results revealed that positive emotions predicted positive meaning, strengths use and study engagement across time. Positive emotions and meaning were reciprocally correlated with each other. Moreover, the use of strengths mediated the association between positive emotions and study engagement. The implications and future directions are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms following past trauma could lead to psychological distress. Little is known, however, about the roles of defense mechanisms and alexithymia may play in the process. The current study aimed to examine the potential impact of alexithymia and defense mechanisms on the relationship between past trauma and distress among Chinese university students. Method: 455 university students completed a set of questionnaires: PTSD Checklists for DSM-5, Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), Defense Style Questionnaire, and General Health Questionnaire-28. Results: PTSD following past trauma was associated with increased psychological distress. Alexithymia and defenses (especially immature defense) mediated the path between PTSD and psychological co-morbidities. Conclusion: Following past trauma, people developed PTSD and other psychological symptoms. The severity of these distress symptoms was influenced by the way they defended themselves psychologically, and their ability to identify, express, and process distressing emotions. Mindfulness has been widely linked with psychological well-being in general population. There are emerging studies supporting the relationship between adolescents' mindfulness and their mental health. However, the mechanisms through which mindfulness may influence adolescents' psychological distress have only recently been explored, and more related research is still needed. This study investigated the relationship between adolescents' dispositional mindfulness and psychological symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. The mediating variables were also explored in perspective of two common emotion regulation theories, which were measured through Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) and Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ). DERS has been used as a comprehensive assessment of emotion regulation difficulties. ERQ is also widely accepted to measure the emotion regulation process including dimensions of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. Measures assessing mindfulness, emotion regulation, and psychological distress were administered to 1067 adolescents in mainland China. The results confirmed that adolescents' dispositional mindfulness was negatively associated with depression, anxiety, and stress. DERS, especially the sub-dimensions of Acceptance and Strategies, significantly mediated the relationship between mindfulness and symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. Whereas, ERQ including subscales of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression exerted limited mediating effect. These findings provided insights for the potential underlying mechanism between adolescents' mindfulness and psychological distress, demonstrating that DERS might be more pervasive than ERQ. Further research was suggested to explore other mediating variables underlying mindfulness and psychological distress among adolescents and develop mindfulness-based programs to improve adolescents' mindfulness and emotion regulation ability. Background: Relationship dissolution is a distressing experience which can result in the emergence of posttraumatic stress (i.e. post-dissolution PTSS) and other psychological symptoms among college students. Little is known, however, whether posttraumatic stress cognitions and interpersonal dependency may influence the severity of these distress outcomes. Aims: This study examined the interrelationship between posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), posttraumatic stress cognitions, interpersonal dependency and psychological co-morbidities following relationship dissolution. Methods: One hundred and eighty college students (M = 69, F = 111) who had experienced relationship dissolution completed the Posttraumatic Stress Diagnostic Scale, Posttraumatic Stress Cognition Inventory, Interpersonal Dependency Inventory and General Health Questionnaire-28. Results: Posttraumatic stress symptoms following relationship dissolution (post-dissolution PTSS) were associated with increased psychological co-morbidities. Negative view of oneself and self-blame mediated between PTSS and psychological co-morbidities. Assertion of autonomy moderated the mediational effects of negative cognitions on psychological co-morbidities. Conclusions: People can develop PTSSs and other psychological symptoms following the dissolution of a romantic relationship. Their concept of self and tendency to seek independence and control played a key role in determining the severity of distress symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
