The construction industry's pursuit of eco-friendly materials has sparked interest in bamboo, a renewable resource with exceptional physical and mechanical properties. This study analyzed the integration of Dendrocalamus giganteus bamboo with phase change materials (PCMs) to enhance thermal energy storage in building applications, aiming to improve temperature regulation and reduce energy consumption for climate control. The study compared the performance of bamboo impregnated with an industrial PCM or coconut oil, used in conjunction with a polyurethane resin (PU) coating treatment, assessing their thermal regulation performance against traditional building materials such as ceramic tiles, fiber cement, and metal sheets. From an anatomical perspective, the pores within bamboo culms offered ample space for PCM storage, resulting in a substantial heat storage capacity. Thermal behavior tests conducted in a wind tunnel revealed that the impregnated bamboo samples effectively mitigate temperature fluctuations by aligning them with the PCM's phase change temperature. Additionally, it was observed that air flow velocity had an impact on this phenomenon. The study concluded that bamboo culms impregnated with PCM hold promise for temperature regulation in construction applications, with variations in airflow exerting an impact on the outcomes obtained. The inherent polarity and hydrophilic nature of lignocellulosic fibers and the nonpolar characteristics of polyolefins create challenges in achieving good adhesion between the two materials. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of surface activation of jute fibers on the fiber-matrix interface of a jute fiber-polyester composite. The fibers were pretreated with hot water and exposed to corona discharge for 5 or 10 min. The fibers were evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Pullout tests were conducted to evaluate the behavior of jute fibers in the polyester matrix when embedded at 5, 10, 20, and 30 mm depths. The pretreatments did not affect the thermal properties of the fibers; however, they promoted oxidation and increased surface roughness. Hot water pretreatment resulted in partial removal of surface waxes and enhanced bonding. Pullout tests revealed that fibers subjected to hot water immersion, followed by 10 min of corona discharge, exhibited approximately a 34% increase in adhesion strength compared to untreated fibers. This research aimed to enhance the impregnation of carboxylate styrene butadiene rubber (XSBR) polymer on jute yarns, thereby improving the mechanical properties of textile-reinforced cementitious composite (TRCC). An experimental investigation on the use of cellulose microcrystals and nanofibrils as additives to XSBR admixture was conducted. Four different solutions containing XSBR are presented, and the interactions between each solution and the fibers, as well as the treated fiber–matrix interactions, were analyzed. For these interaction analyses, the influence of XSBR impregnation was assessed using scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The mechanical properties of both non-treated and treated jute fibers were evaluated through direct tensile tests, and the bond between treated and non-treated jute yarns and the cementitious matrix was assessed through pull-out tests. The use of natural fibers in cementitious composites has been gaining prominence in engineering. The natural lignocellulosic fibers (NLFs) used in these composites have advantages such as reduced density, reduced fragmentation and concrete cracking, thus improving flexural performance and durability. Coconut-fiber is one of those natural fibers and its use presents technical, ecological, social and economic benefits, as it is improperly disposed of, representing a large waste of natural resources, in addition to causing environmental pollution.. Thus, composites reinforced with natural fibers are promising materials for the construction industry, as in addition to meeting the sustainability of buildings, there will also be a reduction in urban solid waste generated and gains for structures with the use of environmentally friendly materials that meet to active efforts and with greater durability. This work aims to evaluate the tensile behavior of green coconut-fibers subjected to different drying temperatures through chemical, thermal (TG/DSC), morphological, visual and mechanical analysis. Drying temperatures of 70 °C, 100 °C and 130 °C were analyzed and the results indicated that the drying temperature at 70 °C was satisfactory, providing fiber-reinforced composites with good tensile strength, combined with good ductility. The main objective of this research is to evaluate the influence of coating based on cellulose micro/nanofibrils (CMF) and carboxylated styrene butadiene rubber (XSBR) on sack kraft paper, for possible use in packaging. Filmogenic solutions were applied manually as a coating on sack kraft paper. These solutions were prepared by suspensions of CMF 1.5 % w/v with the addition of different content of XSBR (0, 2, 10, and 20 % about the total mass of CMF). Uncoated sack kraft paper was used as control. Films were obtained by casting and characterized physically, morphologically, and mechanically. The results demonstrated that XSBR and CMF composite suspension showed good performance as a coating on sack kraft paper. The formation of homogeneous structures well distributed on paper can be observed on scanning electron microscope images. Coatings containing XSBR presented a smoother surface, less porosity and hydrophilicity, and a greater coalescence, with good properties of air resistance and water vapor permeability. However, regarding mechanical properties, there were no improvements in coated papers. Therefore, the present study contributed information on the development of more flexible and hydrophobic cellulosic papers for possible applications in the industrial packaging sector. Two bio-oleogels were investigated. These materials were produced with a combination of canola and soybean oil with 4, 6, 8, and 10% of beeswax (by weight). Sensible heat storage capacity, melting parameters, and enthalpies were investigated by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) test. An ordinary DSC dynamic test was performed. Cycles of heating and cooling were performed, as well as tests with different heating rates. According to the results, the materials present a melting temperature between −16 to −12 °C and a total latent heat between 22.9 and 367.6 J/g. BC10 (canola oil with 10% beeswax) was the sample with the best performance, with a latent heat of 367.6 J/g and a melting temperature of −13.6 °C, demonstrating its possible use as a phase change material for cold storage. This paper investigates the bond behavior between a bio-aggregate and a cement-based matrix. The experimental evaluation comprised physical, chemical, image, and mechanical characterization of the bio-aggregate. The image analyses about the bio-aggregate's outer structure provided first insights to understand the particularities of this newly proposed bio-aggregate for use in cementitious materials. A mineral aggregate (granitic rock), largely used as coarse aggregate in the Brazilian civil construction industry, was used as reference. The bond behavior of both aggregates was evaluated via pull-out tests. The results indicated that both aggregates presented a similar linear elastic branch up to each respective peak loads. The peak load magnitude of the mineral aggregate indicated a better chemical adhesion when compared to the bio-aggregate's. The post-peak behavior, however, indicated a smoother softening branch for the bio-aggregate, corroborated by the microscopy image analyses. The growing demand for products with lower environmental impact and the extensive applicability of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) have received attention due to their attractive properties. In this study, bio-based films/nanopapers were produced with CNFs from banana tree pseudostem (BTPT) wastes and Eucalyptus kraft cellulose (EKC) and were evaluated by their properties, such as mechanical strength, biodegradability, and light transmittance. The CNFs were produced by mechanical fibrillation (after 20 and 40 passages) from suspensions of BTPT (alkaline pre-treated) and EKC. Films/nanopapers were produced by casting from both suspensions with concentrations of 2% (based in dry mass of CNF). The BTPT films/nanopapers showed greater mechanical properties, with Young's modulus and tensile strength around 2.42 GPa and 51 MPa (after 40 passages), respectively. On the other hand, the EKC samples showed lower disintegration in water after 24 h and biodegradability. The increase in the number of fibrillation cycles produced more transparent films/nanopapers and caused a significant reduction of water absorption for both raw materials. The permeability was similar for the films/nanopapers from BTPT and EKC. This study indicated that attractive mechanical properties and biodegradability, besides low cost, could be achieved by bio-based nanomaterials, with potential for being applied as emulsifying agents and special membranes, enabling more efficient utilization of agricultural wastes. Adhesives based on vegetable tannins are already a reality in the market. However, their use is still limited due to their low mechanical resistance and weak humidity resistance. Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are being used as reinforcing materials in various composites, resulting in an improvement of mechanical proprieties in general. The objective of this work was to evaluate the incorporation of CNFs in adhesives made of tannins obtained from the Angico tree (Anadenanthera peregrine). Concentrations of nanofibrils at 1, 5, and 10% were added to the adhesives on a dry basis. Tests of viscosity, pH, solids content, and gel time were performed to determine the physical proprieties of the adhesives. The Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and Raman spectra measurements were also determined to understand the interaction between tannins and CNFs. Thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) were carried out to determine the thermal resistance of the composite. The FTIR and Raman characterization identified some differences in the peaks in the chemical composition of the adhesives with different percentages of CNFs. The adhesives showed no different decomposition in the thermogravimetric analyses. The shear strength in the glue line of the adhesive with 5% of CNFs in Toona ciliata woods was determined. Among all the adhesives analyzed, the one with 5% of CNFs produced an improvement in the mechanical resistance and humidity resistance on the glue line. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to verify the effect of the hemicellulose content of commercial bleached pulps on the ease of mechanical fibrillation and on its energy consumption (EC). NaOH in concentrations of 5% with 2 h of reaction, and 10% with 1 and 2 h of reaction, was evaluated for the partial removal of hemicelluloses. Pulp fibrillation was influenced by hemicellulose removal, being less fibrillated when excessive removal occurred (in the range of 4–8.5%). Hemicellulose content in the range of 9–13% increased the water retention value (WRV) and led to nanofibrils with smaller diameter, while a stronger alkali concentration reduced the WRV. X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that reaction time was a determining factor for the crystallinity of the samples and partial conversion of cellulose I to cellulose II in pretreatments with NaOH 10% (1 and 2 h), and was a factor that may also damage the fibrillation process. Pre-treatment with NaOH 5% for 2 h promoted energy savings for both pulps. This work demonstrated that hemicellulose content has a considerable influence on the mechanical fibrillation and is a key aspect of the balance between efficient fibrillation and the energy required for that.
