From harvesting to consumption of the faba bean (Vicia faba), different plant residues such as stems, leaves, pods, and seed husks remain as by-products. The harvest residues constitute about 50% (w/w) of the whole aboveground biomass, while the empty pods and the seed husks account for 11% and 6% (w/w) on average, respectively. Due to the environmental and dietary benefits, the global production of faba beans is most likely to increase in the future. Concomitantly, the amounts of by-products will rise as well. So far, mainly the harvest residues have been widely studied, whereas the pods and husks have received less consideration. Therefore, the aim of this review was to provide an overview of the composition of the faba bean plant residues and to illustrate their potential of being used as feedstock in food, feed, or even non-food applications. This literature survey clearly reveals that all the residual materials of faba beans contain valuable compounds and might be suitable for a multitude of different applications. This study analyses the microplastics in the sediment of areas surrounding shipwrecks on the Continental Shelf of Pernambuco, North eastern Brazil. The sediment collection was carried out around six wrecks. Flotation methodology was used to separate the possible microplastics from the sediment. Microplastics were classified by type and colour. Of the 6 shipwrecks analysed, 413 microplastic items were identified, with nylon fibre predominating. Fibres of blue colour were the most frequent, totalling 48.4%. The presence of microplastics in shipwrecks shows that this environment, even far from the coast, is subject to human activity. The accumulation of microplastics in the sediments surrounding the shipwrecks may pose a risk to marine life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over recent decades, dietary patterns have changed significantly due to the increasing availability of convenient, ultra-processed refined foods. Refined foods are commonly depleted of key bioactive compounds, which have been associated with several deleterious health conditions. As the gut microbiome can influence the brain through a bidirectional communication system known as the 'microbiota-gut-brain axis', the consumption of refined foods has the potential to affect cognitive health. In this study, multi-omics approaches were employed to assess the effect of a refined diet on the microbiota-gut-brain axis, with a particular focus on bile acid metabolism. Mice maintained on a refined low-fat diet (rLFD), consisting of high sucrose, processed carbohydrates and low fibre content, for eight weeks displayed significant gut microbial dysbiosis, as indicated by diminished alpha diversity metrics (p < 0.05) and altered beta diversity (p < 0.05) when compared to mice receiving a chow diet. Changes in gut microbiota composition paralleled modulation of the metabolome, including a significant reduction in short-chain fatty acids (acetate, propionate and n-butyrate; p < 0.001) and alterations in bile acid concentrations. Interestingly, the rLFD led to dysregulated bile acid concentrations across both the colon (p < 0.05) and the brain (p < 0.05) which coincided with altered neuroinflammatory gene expression. In particular, the concentration of TCA, TDCA and T-α-MCA was inversely correlated with the expression of NF-κB1, a key transcription factor in neuroinflammation. Overall, our results suggest a novel link between a refined low-fat diet and detrimental neuronal processes, likely in part through modulation of the microbiota-gut-brain axis and bile acid dysmetabolism. A polymer processing method called rotational moulding is utilised to make hollow things without tension. Despite being the resin matrix of choice for rotational moulding, linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) performs only moderately in areas where sturdiness is required. In order to maintain the necessary strength, fibres might fill the gap. A variety of testing methods, including FTIR, particle size distribution, bulk density, MFI, DSC, and TGA, were used to support the requirement of processability for rotational moulding in the current study. Peanut shell powder (PSP) was combined with the LLDPE at amounts varying from 2 to 20%. The importance of both materials’ peaks can be seen in FTIR results, which suggested a range of 8% to 18% PSP in LLDPE. Particle size distribution and Bulk density measurement indicated that blends above 14% PSP are not recommended for rotational moulding. Based on MFI data, it was determined that PSP blends of 14% and above have values lower than 3 g/10min which is not suitable in terms of sufficient flow ability in rotational moulding. The inclusion of PSP was found to increase the blend’s crystallinity by 6.6% for 12% PSP blend. As per DSC and TGA data, adding peanut shell powder to LLDPE does not significantly alter the processing temperature range as compared to neat LLDPE, making rotational moulding appropriate for blends containing 8% to 12% PSP. This study focussed on the development of fully biodegradable composites based on polybutylene succinate (PBS) in combination with raw materials from different processing stages of the pulp and paper industry. Sulfite pulp (SP), kraft pulp (KP) and screened sludge residue (SL) from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) were investigated as reinforcing fibres contributing to a circular economy. We report a comparative study of the physicochemical properties and mechanical performance of PBS composites reinforced with these cellulosic raw fibres and commercial pure microcrystalline cellulose (MC). The composites were characterised in tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus of elasticity, water absorption and wettability. The incorporation of the fibres into the polymer matrix was also investigated using torque rheometry. Critical concentrations were obtained with maximum incorporation in the range of 15–20 wt% for SP/KP and 25–30 wt% for SL. SP and KP composites showed at least as good physicochemical and mechanical properties as MC at the concentrations studied (0–20 wt%). SP-composites showed the highest tensile strength and modulus of elasticity. It was shown that these fibres from the pulp and paper industry can be used as reinforcement for PBS matrices without additional chemical purification and provide a valuable alternative to commercial microcrystalline cellulose. Hardwoods are complex heterogeneous and orthotropic structures that have evolved to the present day, adapting to successive climate episodes to prosper on Earth. Attributing a specific functionality to individual hardwood elements is difficult because of their interconnection in this heterogeneous three-dimensional network. However, tree physiology research is helping to enhance knowledge in this field. This work is a short review of the possible functionalities of hardwood elements, in some cases supported by experimentation and in others by comparative anatomy. Highlights: Microplastics (MPs) and microrubbers (MRs) determined in lichens and mosses around Shiraz. In lichens, MPs mainly thin fibres up to 1 MP g−1; MRs were < 0.1 MP g−1. In mosses, abundances were similar but with a greater fraction of larger, non-fibrous particles. Larger MPs and MRs decreased in abundance with distance and elevation from Shiraz. Around Shiraz, the common moss, Grimmia critina, would be the most suitable biomonitor. Lichens and mosses have been employed as biomonitors of atmospheric particulate pollutants, like metals and industrial solids, for many decades. Here, we evaluated the potential of nine species of crustose and foliose lichens and a widely distributed moss (Grimmia critina) to act as biomonitors of airborne microplastics (MPs) and microrubbers (MRs). About 200 lichens and 40 mosses were sampled across different altitudinal transects in the vicinity of Shiraz City, southwest Iran, and MPs and MRs were quantified and characterised after sample peroxidation. In most species of lichen, MP and MR abundance overall was < 1 g−1 and < 0.1 g−1, respectively, and the majority of plastics were fibres of < 10 µm in diameter and < 1000 µm in length. Respective weight normalised abundances of MPs and MRs were similar in G. critina, but there were greater proportions of both larger (> 1000 µm) and non-fibrous particles among the MPs. In both lichens and moss, there was a greater number of larger MPs and MRs at locations closest to and at the same elevation as Shiraz than at more distant and elevated locations, suggesting an inverse relationship between particle size and distance travelled. Among the lichens, members of the genus Acarospora, with their areolated form, appeared to act as the most suitable biomonitors for MPs and MRs. Overall, however, the wide distribution of the moss, G. crinita, and its ability to intercept and accumulate a broader range of sizes and shapes of MPs and MRs make this species a better choice, at least in the type of environment studied. The effects of thermal behaviour on graphene nanoplatelets (GP) and multiwalled carbon nanotube (CN) nanofillers of glass fibre (GL)-reinforced epoxy composites were investigated. The paper aims at evaluating, through a single and hybrid carbon-based nanofiller on the thermal stability, mechanical properties, electromechanical properties at elevated temperature, and morphologies of the composites. The nanofillers were dispersed using a mechanical stirrer, Thinky mixer, and ultrasonic probe. Hand lay-up and vacuum bagging techniques were used in the manufacturing of composites. Real-time self-monitoring of the structural damage to the specimens under tensile and flexural tests was performed through electromechanical measurements. Using the GP–CN hybrid in the composite improved the adhesion between the hybrid nanofillers and matrix. The thermal properties of GP–GL, CN–GL, and GP–CN–GL hybrid composites increased with the hybrid nanofiller addition. Mechanical testing at elevated temperatures revealed a higher rate of strength degradation for the 1.5-mass% GP–CN–GL hybrid composite than for a single nanofiller composite. Modern concrete mix design is a complex process involving superplasticisers, fine powders, and fibres, requiring time and energy due to the high number of trial tests needed to achieve rheological properties in the fresh state. Concrete batching involves the extensive use of materials, time, and the testing of chemical admixtures, with various methodologies proposed. Therefore, in some instances, the required design properties (physical and mechanical) are not achieved, leading to the loss of resources. The concrete equivalent mortar (CEM) method was introduced to anticipate concrete behaviour at fresh and hardened states. Moreover, the CEM method saves time and costs by replacing coarse aggregates with an equivalent sand mass, resulting in an equivalent specific surface area at the mortar scale. This study aims to evaluate the performance of fibre in CEM and concrete and determine the relationships between the CEM and the concrete in fresh and hardened states. Steel and polypropylene fibres were used to design three series of mixtures (CEM and concrete): normal-strength concrete (NSC), high-strength concrete (HSC), high-strength concrete with fly ash (HSCFA), and equivalent normal-strength mortar (NSM), high-strength mortar (HSM), and high-strength mortar with fly ash (HSMFA). This study used three-point bending tests and digital image correlation to evaluate load and crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) curves. An analytical mode I crack propagation model was developed using a tri-linear stress–crack opening relationship. Post-cracking parameters were optimised using inverse analysis and compared to actual MC2010 characteristic values. The concrete slump is approximately half of the CEM flow; its compressive strength ranges between 78% and 82% of CEM strength, while its flexural strength is 60% of CEM strength. The post-cracking behaviour showed a significant difference attributed to the presence of aggregates in concrete. The fracture energy of concrete is 28.6% of the CEM fracture energy, while the critical crack opening of the concrete is 60% of that of the CEM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research proposes to include different percentages of recycled polypropylene (PP) fibers and polystyrene (PS) granules in the manufacture of concrete blocks. They are thermoplastic materials widely used in industry and are characterized by their lightness, their low thermal and electrical conductivity, and their low humidity absorption coefficient, factors that improve the efficiency of constructions. The results of this study show improvements in the mechanical behavior of the blocks with these plastic additives compared to the traditional ones, along with improvements in the structural behavior of the low (2-story) and medium-height (8-story) frames. Plastic pollution has been a widespread issue across the world ever since its invention in the early 1900s to its flourishment during the Industrial Revolution. The viciousness of plastics further elevates with the emergence of microplastics with smaller size and larger surface area than larger plastic debris. Smaller plastic particles of micro- and nano-size range are ubiquitous in all environmental compartments and have the potential to penetrate the biological system resulting in bioaccumulation and biomagnification. Evaluation of the presence of microplastics in the water and soil of an area is necessary for the implementation of precautionary and remedial measures. The present study attempts to evaluate the extent of microplastic pollution along the beaches of Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala, India. Surface sediment samples were collected from 25 locations across the coastal line of Thiruvananthapuram. Microplastics were quantified and categorized based on their colour, shape, size, and composition. Visual identification and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy were used for the estimation. The result revealed that the majority of plastic particles present were fibres accounting for around 80.80%. The maximum distribution of particles was reported from the sampling location at Thazhampalli-Chirayinkeezhu and Bheemapally. Around 78.05% of particles were coloured while the remaining were either white or colourless. Nylon fibres and polypropylene fragments were the dominant polymer types obtained. Background: Team handball involves a tremendous amount of shoulder motion with high forces during repeated extended external range of motion. This causes shoulder complaints and overuse injuries. While eccentric training for the lower extremity shows preventive effects by improving strength, range of motion and fascicle length, there is a research gap for the shoulder joint and for advanced tissue characterization using diffusion tensor imaging. Objectives: To investigate the effects of 6-week eccentric isokinetic resistance training on strength, flexibility, and fiber architecture characteristics of the external rotators compared to an active control group in junior male handball players. Methods: 15 subjects were randomly assigned to the eccentric training group and 14 subjects to the active control group (conventional preventive training). Primary outcome measures were eccentric and concentric isokinetic strength of the external rotators, range of motion, and muscle fascicle length and fascicle volume. Results: The intervention group, showed significant changes in eccentric strength (+15%). The supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles showed significant increases in fascicle length (+13% and +8%), and in fractional anisotropy (+9% and +6%), which were significantly different from the control group. Conclusion: Eccentric isokinetic training has a significant effect on the function and macroscopic structure of the shoulder external rotators in male junior handball players. While strength parameters and muscle structure improved, range of motion did not change. This research helps understanding the physiology of muscle and the role of eccentric training on shoulder function and muscle structure. Furthermore, DTI was found to be a promising tool for advanced tissue characterization, and the in vivo derived data can also serve as model input variables and as a possibility to extend existing ex-vivo muscle models. Scientific advancements in understanding the impact of bioactive components in foods on the gut microbiota and wider physiology create opportunities for designing targeted functional foods. The selection of bioactive ingredients with potential local or systemic effects holds promise for influencing overall well-being. An abundance of studies demonstrate that gut microbiota show compositional changes that correlate age and disease. However, navigating this field, especially for non-experts, remains challenging, given the abundance of bioactive ingredients with varying levels of scientific substantiation. This narrative review addresses the current knowledge on the potential impact of the gut microbiota on host health, emphasizing gut microbiota resilience. It explores evidence related to the extensive gut health benefits of popular dietary components and bioactive ingredients, such as phytochemicals, fermented greens, fibres, prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics. Importantly, this review distinguishes between the potential local and systemic effects of both popular and emerging ingredients. Additionally, it highlights how dietary hormesis promotes gut microbiota resilience, fostering better adaptation to stress—a hallmark of health. This research studies the influence of the addition of defatted press cakes (from the production of hazelnut, camelina, pumpkin, and hemp seed oil) on nutritionally important components: fibre, resistant starch, polyphenols, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and acrylamide in directly and indirectly expanded snacks. The amounts of press cakes added to corn grits were 3, 6, and 9%. Extrusion was carried out in a laboratory single-screw extruder. For indirectly expanded products (SCFX), supercritical CO2 was injected during extrusion, and secondary expansion was completed in the microwave oven. The type and content of press cake, as well as the type of product, significantly influenced total polyphenol content and antioxidant activity. Press cakes increased the contents of both soluble and insoluble fibre (from 1.94% d. m. and 1.28% d. m. for extrudates without press cakes up to 3.17% d. m. and 6.94% d. m. for SCFX extrudates with press cakes, respectively), and resistant starch was not markedly influenced by their addition. The influence of the content of press cake on HMF was not significant, whereas the type of cake and the type of extrusion influenced HMF significantly. In a raw mixture of corn grits with 3% of pumpkin press cake, HMF was below the limit of detection, and the highest content was found in the classically extruded sample with the addition of 9% of camelina press cake (580 ppb). In all samples, the acrylamide content was below the limit of detection, indicating that safe products were obtained. This research shows potential for the implementation of supercritical CO2 extrusion in the production of safe, nutritionally improved snack products. Microplastics (MPs) have been observed in the oceans, fresh waters, karstic water and remote water bodies. However, little is known on groundwater contamination, which is a natural resource of utmost importance for millions of people and is often perceived as a reliable source of water. Moreover, nanofiltration is perceived as a reliable technology to remove contaminants from water. In this study, large sample volumes of a silty-sandy gravel aquifer and the corresponding nanofiltered water were analysed for the presence of MPs (> 20 µm) using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) microscopy. Concentration in ground water was 8 ± 7 MPs/m3 and increased to 36 ± 11 MPs/m3 in nanofiltered water. All MPs had a maximum Ferret diameter lower than 500 µm. Size distribution of MPs was towards the small size class (20–50 µm). In groundwater, 33% of MPs were detected in the smallest size class (20–50 µm) and 67% in the 50–100-µm-size class. In comparison, around 52% of MPs in nanofiltered water were observed in the 20–50 µm size class. Moreover, 33% of the MPs observed in nanofiltered water were in the 50–100 µm size class and 15% in the 100–500-µm-size class. From a chemical point of view, different plastic polymers were identified in groundwater and in nanofiltered water, such as polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), ethylene (vinyl acetate) copolymer (EVA), polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and other polymer materials (such as polystyrene-based copolymers, vinyl-based copolymers). Fibres were observed in all samples, but only a small number of fibres (near 1%) were identified as PP synthetic fibres in nanofiltered water. Furthermore, no clear difference of fibre concentrations was observed between groundwater (232 ± 127 fibres/m3) and nanofiltered water (247 ± 118 fibres/m3). Groundwater had extremely low levels of microplastics, and although the nanofiltration effectively removes suspended particulate matter, it slightly contaminates the filtered water with MPs. Local defects in cellulose fibres, commonly referred to as microcompressions, increase the apparent strain to fracture in paper, an increasingly important parameter for products demanding stretch. This study presents an investigation into the origin of microcompressions by examining the behaviour of aspen wood under uniaxial compression applied along the grain, a process mimicking the action of a screw press and refiners during mechanical pulping. Using X-ray micro-computed tomography, a series of 10 tomograms with 30 µm of compressive deformation between images were acquired at 1.2 µm voxel size. For each tomogram, image analysis routines were developed to segment and label individual tracheids, vessel and ray elements, and track their motion between sequential frames. We classified the evolution of the axial trajectory of each element as either non-buckled or buckled, with a prominent presence of microcompression with axial deformations of less than 3%. We argue that microcompression precedes buckling. Significantly, we advance that localized deformation events (microcompressions, buckling, telescopic shortening) nucleate near vessel elements, and spread with increasing levels of compression; no particular structure appears to be immune to collapse. Finally, we liberated fibres in the compressed sample through chemical pulping and found that the damage occurring from compression was permanent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Little is known about microplastics (MPs) in adult frogs. We investigated MPs in adult Common River Frogs (Amietia delalandii) from Potchefstroom, South Africa. Five kinds of samples were analysed: natural water, water used to rinse the skin, skin, intestine, and the remainder of the body (corpus). Tissues were digested. Microplastics occurred in all frogs and sample types (1128 MPs counted). Fibres were the most prevalent MP. Fibre lengths were between 28 and 4300 μm, either polyester or polyvinyl alcohol. MPs in skin were likely derived from the ambient, and MPs in the corpus from translocation via the skin. Fibres in tissues were significantly shorter in larger frogs, a phenomenon we provisionally assign to in situ biodegradation. Microplastics in frogs can potentially be transferred through the food web to higher trophic levels. Centrifugal spinning is a technology used to generate small diameter fibers and has been extensively studied for its vast applications in biomedical engineering. Centrifugal spinning is known for its rapid production rate and has inspired the creation of other technologies which leverage the high‐speed rotation, namely Pressurized Gyration. Pressurized gyration incorporates a unique applied gas pressure which serves to provide additional control over the fiber production process. The resulting fibers are uniquely suitable for a range of healthcare‐related applications that are thoroughly discussed in this work, which involve scaffolds for tissue engineering, solid dispersions for drug delivery, antimicrobial meshes for filtration and bandage‐like fibrous coverings for wound healing. In this review, the notable recent developments in centrifugal spinning and pressurized gyration are presented and how these technologies are being used to further the range of uses of biomaterials engineering, for example the development of core‐sheath fabrication techniques for multi‐layered fibers and the combination with electrospinning to produce advanced fiber mats. The enormous potential of these technologies and their future advancements highlights how important they are in the biomedical discipline. Objective: The recommended level of five fruits and vegetables per day is reached by a minority of French children. No-added sugars fruit puree (NASFP) can be consumed as a complement of fresh fruit to meet the recommendation for fruits and vegetables. The objective was to simulate the nutritional impact of an increase in consumption of NASFP among French children, together with a reduction in sweetened foods. Design: The study was conducted on French children aged 1–17 years. The simulation consisted in introducing NASFP on four different eating occasions (breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner) to reach one serving and removing the same serving of sweetened foods. Intakes in nutrients to favour, nutrients to limit and prevalence of adequacy to nutritional requirements were compared between observed and simulated diets in the whole sample and in five different age groups. Setting: France. Participants: Children from 1 to 17 years of age in the last available French representative dietary survey (INCA3). Results: Simulated diets were more nutrient-dense thanks to increases in nutrients to favour from NASFP (especially fibres, iodine, Se, and vitamin A and C) associated with reductions in energy and nutrients to limit (especially free sugars) coming from sweetened foods. Prevalence of adequacy increased from 2 to 14·5 points for fibres and from 4·5 to 12 points for free sugars according to age group and eating occasion. Conclusion: Promoting NASFP in replacement of sweetened products is a promising strategy to improve the nutritional quality of French children's diet through a better adherence to national guidelines. For didactic purposes, the aim of this work was to improve a simulation model of surface electromyographic (sEMG) signal by taking into consideration the shortcomings of previously developed models. This model started with the simulation of the single fibre action potential (SFAP), then the model of the single motor unit action potential (MUAP), afterwards the imitation of the train of MUAP and finally the modellig of the resultant sEMG signal which is the sum of the MUAPs trains. SFAP simulation was based on: i) the description of the volume conductor model which is composed of four layers (bone, muscle, fat and skin), ii) the description of the electrodes shapes and sizes as well as spatial filters, iii) and the transmebrane current. The proposed model shows its effectiveness in the possibility of carrying out practical work by simulation on the modelling of SFAP, MUAP, MUAPT and the sEMG signal. The most important result of this model is that signal processing tools can be applied to analyze and interpret real-world phenomena such as the effects of physiological, non physiological and sensing system parameters on the shape of the simulated sEMG signal. The popularity of sweet potatoes in Central Europe has been increasing recently, mainly the high-quality, perfect, fresh tubers are in demand. However, out of class grade tubers could be marketed in dried, grounded form as sweet potato flour. The aim of this study was to characterise some important nutritional properties of flours of three sweet potato genotypes with different tuber colours (white, purple, and orange) and to investigate how this raw material affects the rheological properties of sweet potato-wheat flour blends. Dietary fibres are present in sweet potatoes in a significant proportion, orange coloured flour showed the highest values. The main free sugars were sucrose, glucose, and fructose, but sucrose was the dominant one. Antioxidant capacity and total phenolic content also varied considerably, the purple flour had the highest values. Mineral composition showed significant variability, the purple flour contained the highest level of minerals. It was confirmed that adding sweet potato flour to wheat flour affected its rheological properties, however in a varied manner. For the orange flour these properties have lightly decreased, though it had no significant effect on dough quality, while the white and purple flours with a dosage of 5, 10 and 15% could improve the dough behaviour. Background and aim: The cardio-oesophageal sphincter that is located in close longitudinal proximity to the origin of the lesser curvature of the stomach has a unique pattern of external muscle fibres whose inner oblique layer would normally form an elongated sling and the middle partially circular layer would form a projecting clasp into the already existing muscular sling of the former congruently, which would result in the formation of an anatomical sphincter in that area that would normally be devoid of the external longitudinal muscle layer coat. Certain authors have disagreed with the notion of this standard literature and have proposed that the clasp and sling fibres need not necessarily be congruent and may even remain independent of each other with partial contributions from the longitudinal muscle layers as well that may arise tangentially in different populations, which may in turn contribute to reflux oesophagitis in that population. Hence, the clasp and sling fibre muscular patterns were observed in six formalin-embalmed cadavers at the department of anatomy in a tertiary care institute as part of routine dissections in series, and the findings were then reported. Findings: At the junction of the lesser curvature of the stomach with the oesophagus, all six cadavers showed a longitudinal sling pattern as opposed to the conventional oblique sling. The circular muscle layer was found to be merged with the outer longitudinal muscle layer to form the sling that pulled away from the clasp, resulting in a loss of congruency for the same. The clasp fibres, however, were found to be contributed by the inner oblique muscle layer. The conventional perpendicular or tangential merging of the clasp with the sling was not observed; instead, an obtuse, blunt angular merging of the clasp with the sling was observed. Discussion: The deviation of the sling from the clasp could indicate a lack of a proper fit between them at the cardio-oesophageal sphincter. The lack of robustness in the attachment of the clasp to the sling may possibly contribute to the diminished taut pull of the clasp in this subset of the population. This paper presents a simple method of obtaining polyamide 6 fibres modified with acetanilide and copper ions. During the spinning of the fibres with the additives applied, a partial reduction of CuSO4 to Cu2+ and Cu+ ions occurs, which is observed as a change in the blue colour of the prepared polyamide granulate to the grey–brown colour of the formed fibres. CuMPs obtained as a result of the salt reduction should give the obtained fibres bioactive properties. Three types of microorganisms were selected to assess the microbiological activity of the obtained fibres, i.e., Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. The fibres have antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The largest inhibition zones were obtained for the Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, ranging from 1.5 to 4.5 mm, depending on the concentration of CuMPs. The morphology of the fibres' surfaces was examined by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy (OM). The changes in the polymer structure chemistry are studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray structure studies (WAXS and SAXS) and an energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. Through this study, an attempt was made to produce concrete beams from self‐compacting concrete (SCC) contain expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads as coarse aggregate and waste plastic fibers (WPFs) produced from cutting disposed packing straps in site. The beams were designed according to ACI‐318‐14, where three different reinforcement ratios were chosen for the purpose of checking the conductance of thresholds made of this type of environmentally friendly concrete under bending loads. The use of EPS with WPFs had a significant positive effect in reducing the density of concrete, and the highest percentage of reduction was equal to (38.46%). Using WPFs had a positive effect in increasing the flexural toughness of concrete prisms, and the maximum increment was equal to (180%) compared with these made from the reference mix. The results proved the possibility of producing lightweight concrete from the use of EPS waste and WPFs, three of which are structurally can be classified as lightweight concrete combination of normal weight and lightweight aggregates according to specifications requirements of ASTM330/330M‐14. Reinforced lightweight SCC beams behaved under flexural loads similar to the reinforced concrete beams made from normal weight concrete counterparts under flexural loads. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) is one of the important water-soluble derivatives of chitosan which has been widely used for various biomedical applications. CMC can be easily processed into nanoparticles, microparticles, hydrogels, scaffolds, nanofibers, etc. Electrospun nanofibrous matrices have emerged as a promising strategy for wound dressing, tissue engineering, and drug delivery applications. Electrospinning of water-soluble CMC is challenging and required additional binder. Electrospun CMC nanofibers have potential applications in drug delivery, wound healing and tissue engineering area. The diagnostics of materials, elements and structures after fire exposure are very complicated. Researchers carrying out such diagnostics encounter difficulties at the very beginning, e.g., how to map fire conditions. In this publication, the authors focused on the analysis of the fibre-cement composite used as facade cladding. The fibre-cement boards are construction products used in civil engineering. The fibre-cement boards are characterised by two phases: the matrix phase and the dispersed phase. The analysis of fibre-cement composite was performed using non-destructive methods. The use of non-destructive methods in the future will allow for the analysis of facades after fires without the need to obtain large elements, which will significantly reduce costs while increasing safety. The aim of the work was to determine internal changes in the microstructure of fibre-cement boards after exposure to fire. The degraded samples were compared with reference samples in the evaluation of the microstructure. An analysis was performed using a scanning electron microscope, images of backscattered electrons (BSE) and maps obtained using Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), which allowed conclusions to be drawn. The observed changes were presented in the form of photos showing changes in the composition of the plates, and they were commented on. It should be noted that fire temperatures act destructively, and a number of changes can be observed in the microstructure. The results of the work indicate that, in the future, the use of non-destructive methods will make it possible to assess the degree of degradation of the façade after a fire. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of fibres applied to concrete in order to improve its properties is widely known. Nowadays, research is not only focused on improving mechanical properties but also on the environmental implications. The aim of this research was a mechanical and environmental comparison between different types of fibres. For this purpose, commercial fibres of three materials were used: low carbon steel, modified polyolefins, and glass fibre. In order to improve the sustainability of the sector, we also analysed and compared the performance of using a waste product, such as fibres from machining operations on lathes. For the evaluation of the mechanical properties, compression and flexural tests were carried out. The results show that the use of low carbon steel fibres increases the flexural strength by 4.8%. At the environmental level, and in particular for impact categories such as the Global Warming Potential (GWP), lathe waste fibres prove to be the most suitable. For instance, compared to glass fibres, CO2 emissions are reduced by 14.39%. This is equivalent to a total of 38 kg CO2 emissions per m3 of reinforced concrete. In addition to avoiding the consumption of 482 MJ/m3 of fossil fuels, the results of the research indicate the feasibility of using waste fibres as a substitute for commercial fibres, contributing to an improved environmental balance without losing mechanical performance. The incorporation of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNs) derived from wood pulp resulted in an improvement in the characteristics of polymeric membranes made up of poly (methyl vinyl ether maleic acid)/PMVEMA and poly (ethylene glycol)/PEG. The membranes were constructed, and TOCNs were included in the formulation at a rate of 5 wt%. TOCNs were categorized as either short or long, depending on the aspect ratio measurement. According to the findings of the research, the various lengths of TOCNs resulted in variances in the optical transmittance properties, contact angles, and whiteness level of the membranes, in addition to a little variation in the tensile and thermal properties of the material. When compared to short TOCNs, long TOCNs offer somewhat improved performance in terms of optical transmittance, whiteness level, tensile characteristics, and thermal stability. The results of this study reveal the significance of the morphology of nanocellulose in determining the properties of the composite that includes it. Microplastics' presence in the pelagic environment is still largely unknown due to the difficulty of sampling in this part of the ocean. In this study, we quantify microplastics' exposure in a pelagic lanternfish species from the western Mediterranean, Lampanyctus crocodilus (Risso 1810), which occupies an intermediate position in the marine food web. L. crocodilus were captured in the Ibiza Channel by a trawling vessel and microplastics were extracted by digestion of their gastrointestinal systems. Almost half of the analysed lanternfish contained microplastics, mostly blue and black fibres (40.9% and 34.66%, respectively). In fishes with at least one microplastic, the median was 3 MPs/fish (CI 95% = 3.46–6.8), similar to other studies performed in other fish species in the area. Biometric parameters of fish, such as total length and body condition, were not correlated with the number of microplastics. Summary: Flexible packaging has become indispensable in the food industry due to its numerous advantages. However, it has certain drawbacks, such as limited recyclability and environmental contamination. While efforts are underway to develop more sustainable and eco‐friendly packaging options, the food industry's reliance on flexible packaging made from unsustainable petro‐based plastics is expected to continue in the foreseeable future. Therefore, more sustainable alternatives that do not sacrifice performance are required. One such option is to use nanocellulose, especially cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), which can be reinforced into biopolymer to enhance mechanical and barrier properties. The present study aims to isolate kudzu CNCs by depolymerisation, bleaching, acid hydrolysis with 51% sulfuric acid, and mechanical dispersion. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was conducted to assess the thermal stability of kudzu fibres. Further, the FTIR spectra were measured at wave number ranged 4000–500 cm−1, which showed changes in the structure after treatments and confirmed the removal of lignin and hemicellulose from the cellulose. The isolated CNCs were found to have lengths and diameters of 285.01 ± 150.33 nm and 42.78 ± 13.26 nm, respectively, with an aspect ratio of 6.43 ± 1.78. Microplastic pollution in aquatic environments has been a ubiquitous concern in recent years, owing to their rapid production combined with poor waste management practices. However, information on freshwater microplastics in the Global South is still scarce, despite growing research on freshwater microplastics in recent years, particularly within the Global North. To help address this knowledge gap, we studied water and sediment microplastic dynamics along a subtropical river system, i.e. Crocodile River around the Nelspruit City area (South Africa), across three different seasons (i.e. cool-dry, hot-dry, hot-wet) using a combination of diversity indices and multivariate analyses. Microplastics were more abundant during the cool-dry season in the surface water samples (mean 1058 particles m−3) and high during the hot-dry season (mean 568 particles kg−1 dwt) in the sediment samples. The hot-wet season had a low particle density in both surface water (mean 625 particles m−3) and sediments (mean 86 particles kg−1 dwt) samples. Microplastic shapes were dominated by fibres and fragments, with the colour scheme dominated by transparent, blue, and black. The abundance of microplastics was positively correlated with pH and resistivity, and negatively with river flow. Wastewater was attributed as a primary source of microplastics, particularly because of the observed dominant fibre microplastics, usually released during laundry. Our results suggest that Crocodile River and its tributaries are temporary sinks of microplastics during periods of low rainfall. Implications of this pollution are far-reaching, including effects on residents who are dependent on the Crocodile River as a source of drinking water and aquatic biota which may be exposed to these pollutants. Nowadays, 3D-printing developed to simplify the fabrication of complex parts quickly. The applications of this new technology have outspread in some industrial fields. Reinforcement fibers have been vastly used in composite manufacturing to enhance the mechanical strength of matrices to fulfill industrial requirements. Recently, 3D-printed composites have developed using reinforcement fibers and additive manufacturing materials like polymer resins. In this review, the different methods of manufacturing printed fiber-reinforced composites introduced, and experiments for obtaining the mechanical properties are considered. A new framework for the parametric reconstruction of curved fibres from glass fibre-reinforced composite X-ray computed tomography data is proposed. It allows us to detect fibres in a fibre-reinforced polymer sample from a low-dose, low resolution computed tomography scan. An efficient curve representation is then used for each detected fibre, of which the parameters are estimated directly from few 2D high-resolution projection images. The framework is validated on both simulated and real data of glass fibre-reinforced polymers. The generated results demonstrate that it is robust to noise and requires less than 10 high-resolution projections to obtain reasonable fibre estimates. The materials of six Karen textiles from the British Museum's collection were investigated with the main aim of studying the production changes over the course of the nineteenth century and how these changes related to local and colonial trade networks. The textiles span chronologically from the 1830s to the early 1900s according to their attribution dates, and include traditional garments such as tunics and skirts, in addition to representing a broad colour palette and different dyeing and weaving techniques. The investigation was conducted non-invasively by using digital microscopy, broadband multispectral imaging (MSI) and fibre optic reflectance spectroscopy (FORS). The results guided a sampling campaign during which samples were taken and investigated by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM–EDX) and high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to diode array detector and tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC–DAD-MS/MS). Local natural dyes, such as red and yellow from Morinda citrifolia, lac dye (Kerria lacca), gamboge (Garcinia sp.), turmeric (Curcuma longa), indigo and tannins were found in the older textiles, supporting a possible early production, whereas mixtures of natural and synthetic dyes, including synthetic alizarin (CI 58000), rhodamine B (CI 45170), orange I (CI 14600), diamond green B (CI 42000), diamond green G (CI 42040), auramine O (CI 41000), naphthol yellow S (CI 10316), chrysamine G (CI 22250), crystal violet (CI 42555) and Pigment Red 53:1 (CI 15585:1) were identified in the later textiles. Observations on mordants revealed the use of aluminium, tin and chrome, whereas fibre characterisation highlighted the use not only of cotton (Gossypium sp.) but also of felted wool imported from Europe and Chinese silk dyed with the Chinese cork tree (Phellodendron chinense) yellow dye. The results draw an interesting picture of the introduction of new dyeing materials and techniques in Myanmar over the nineteenth century, and how these impacted the production of traditional Karen textiles. There are many pulp and paper industries all around the globe and in Ethiopia as well different companies are involved in the production and distribution of paper and paper products. Most of the industries especially those in developing countries like Ethiopia produce paper from pulp obtained from wood cellulose. Ethiopia is not producing its pulp and mostly the paper industries depend on imported pulp or recycled paper. There are critical limitations in synthesizing pulp and paper from wood-based cellulose resources mainly the scarcity of wood in some countries and the impact on altering the ecological balance and through frequent deforestation and replantation practice. The present review assesses the potential sources from non-wood resources which can be used as a substitute cellulose raw material for the pulp and paper industry. The study encompasses possible beneficiation routes for manufacturing pulp from non-wood cellulose resources available in Ethiopia for diversified application in the paper industry. With this regard, potential non-wood raw materials for pulping are assed in line with the fulfilment of the target for import substitution strategy, the realization of a safe working environment, and socio-economic betterment of the nation with specific reference to the paper industry. The recovery and recycling of textile waste is becoming urgent since textiles are generating more and more waste. In one year, about 92 million tons of textile waste are produced and the fashion industry accounts for 58 million tons of plastic waste per year. Several different synthetic fibres are used in textiles, thanks to their excellent processability and mechanical properties, but on the other hand, the difficulties linked to their end of life and the release of microplastics from them during washing is currently a cause of great concern. In this context, policy actions have been aimed at promoting recycling of waste and replacing fossil-based fibres with biobased fibres. The current review, considering both scientific papers published on international journals and web sources, considers the sorting of textiles and the possible recycling of polyesters, polyamides and acrylics. Nevertheless, the contamination and presence of mixed fibres in fabrics is another issue to face for recycling. Methodologies to solve the issue linked to the presence of elastane, present in the stretch fabrics, as well as the possibility of recycling textiles in the non-woven and composite sector are investigated. Moreover, chemical recycling and enzymatic recycling of fossil polymers are also considered. Thanks to the comprehensive scheme of this review, it is possible to deduce that, while the use of biobased materials should rapidly increase in textile applications, the perspective of recycling materials obtained from waste textile into durable and/or high-performance products seems the most promising. The abundant availability of natural fibres around the globe seeks researchers' attention on their potential use as construction materials. There is a need to explore the structural integrity of cement concrete reinforced with such natural fibres. To start with, wheat straw is considered. In this study, the structural performance of wheat straw reinforced cement concrete (WSRC) road is evaluated. The properties of plain concrete pavement are taken as a reference. Wheat straw, of approximately 18 mm in length and 1% content (by mass of wet concrete), is considered to make the WSRC road test section. The laying technique of WSRC, at a larger scale, is explained. The laboratory and field investigations are made. The compressive properties, deflection measurements, and cracks progression are determined after the exposure of test sections to vehicular loading for 18 months. Micro-structural analysis of straw–concrete matrix is also done to verdict the uniform dispersion of straw with proper bonding and its failure mechanism. The study is concluded with 34% and 16% more energy absorption capacity and load transfer efficiency, respectively, in the WSRC test section compared to that of the controlled section. Also, the structural performance of the WSRC road test section, with 7% less design thickness than the plain concrete road test section, is comparable for having economical and sustainable concrete roads. Summary: To achieve optimal balance among wood's support, storage, and transport functions, tree species present adaptive variation in wood anatomical traits. Oaks (Quercus) are woody plants that are dominant in many ecosystems, possess wide variation in wood traits, and can tolerate water stress in diverse habitats. Mountain regions contain steep climatic gradients that exert strong environmental pressures on wood traits. The aims of this study were: (1) to quantify the anatomical variation in 21 oak species distributed along an environmental gradient and (2) to analyze the interspecific variation among the studied species. Fibres and parenchyma fractions were the most abundant cell types. We found a trade-off between total fibre fraction and total parenchyma fraction modulated by the precipitation during the warmest quarter in which oak species in drier areas invested more in support cells. The 21 oak species studied showed vasicentric tracheids, which could be essential to compensate for the transport system in drier areas. Wood density was negatively correlated with the axial parenchyma fraction and fibre lumen width. Oak species have high interspecific variation in the total vessel fraction and vessel diameter. Anatomical variation in oak species along a climatic gradient showed a broad continuum of fibre characteristics from wide to narrow wall and lumen, abundant to scarce parenchyma, and wide to narrow vessels. These variations imply a diversification of ecological strategies within the genus that includes the vascular design of the stem to define the tolerance and competitiveness of the oak species. The current study reviews the viability of various fibre-polymer composites and treatment techniques along with the intricacy involved in improving the rotational moulding process. It is a method used in the manufacturing of hollow plastic items free from stress. As the rotational moulding process has gained prominence in a variety of crucial applications in recent years, a detailed analysis of this technique is important. For this reason, an exhaustive review of various fibres and polymers used in rotational moulding along with different pre-treatment techniques for improving the processability has been carried out and categorised into three sections. The first section deals with the type of polymers which are used for the process along with their nature and suitability for rotational moulding. The second section deals with the study of different fibres that have been blended with the polymers. The last section of the review discusses the different fibre treatment techniques which can be used to improve polymer-fibre compatibility. From a wide range of polymers used, it has been observed that the ease of processability of linear low-density polyethylene makes it the most suitable grade for rotational moulding. It can also be noticed that artificial fibres provide good mechanical properties compared to natural fibres but being eco-friendly and having low cost, natural fibres are more vital in the application. It is evident from the review that fibre pre-treatment enhances the polymer-fibre compatibility which improves the mechanical properties of the rotationally moulded products. Further, it can be concluded from the literature review that an adequate variety of polymer and fibre along with fibre treatment techniques can make an important contribution to the rotational moulding process. Soft soils often contain important fractions of fines and organic matter which are characterized by high shrinkage potential. Investigating the shrinkage behaviour of soft soils is of primary importance to assess the durability of infrastructures exposed to climatic stresses. This paper investigates the influence of soil fabric on the shrinkage properties and the change in the microporosity structures over drying. Soil shrinkage tests were performed on Shenzhen soft clay (SZ soft clay) and fibrous peat. The effect of the initial fabric was investigated by comparing the samples at natural and reconstituted states, and the reconstituted peat samples with different fibre contents. To assist in the interpretation of the results, microstructural changes in the soil fabric were investigated by mercury intrusion porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and micro-CT scan. As the water gradually drains from the multilevel pores, different drying stages were identified. Pore refinements occurred during the drying process, accompanied by a progressive reduction in the peak pore entrance. Contrary to SZ soft clay, intensive shrinkage occurred in the last stage of fibrous peats, due to the collapse of interpores and cracks created during drying. The results showed that the magnitude of the intensive shrinkage increased with the fibre content. It suggests that fibres act as an unstable element in peat upon drying. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alternative eco-friendly and sustainable construction methods are being developed to address growing infrastructure demands, which is a promising field of study. The development of substitute concrete binders is required to alleviate the environmental consequences of Portland cement. Geopolymers are very promising low-carbon, cement-free composite materials with superior mechanical and serviceability properties, compared to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) based construction materials. These quasi-brittle inorganic composites, which employ an "alkali activating solution" as a binder agent and industrial waste with greater alumina and silica content as its base material, can have their ductility enhanced by utilising the proper reinforcing elements, ideally "fibres". By analysing prior investigations, this paper explains and shows that Fibre Reinforced Geopolymer Concrete (FRGPC) possesses excellent thermal stability, low weight, and decreased shrinking properties. Thus, it is strongly predicted that fibre-reinforced geopolymers will innovate quickly. This research also discusses the history of FRGPC and its fresh and hardened properties. Lightweight Geopolymer Concrete (GPC) absorption of moisture content and thermomechanical properties formed from Fly ash (FA), Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH), and Sodium Silicate (Na2SiO3) solutions, as well as fibres, are evaluated experimentally and discussed. Additionally, extending fibre measures become advantageous by enhancing the instance's long-term shrinking performance. Compared to non-fibrous composites, adding more fibre to the composite often strengthens its mechanical properties. The outcome of this review study demonstrates the mechanical features of FRGPC, including density, compressive strength, split tensile strength, and flexural strength, as well as its microstructural properties. Tapestries and especially pile carpets can be challenging objects for assessing their photosensitivity by microfading: they are often made of relatively thick yarns resulting in a non-flat airy surface. For this reason, focusing the light on the object's surface is difficult and the precision of the colour change measurement is hampered. In this study, an improved test methodology was developed to overcome the difficulties by analysing single yarns. The methodology consists in flattening the yarn between glass microscope slides tightly held together by means of 4 strong paired neodymium magnets. The results show that the newly-developed sample preparation together with the required instrumental adjustment allow to significantly reduce the standard deviation and variation coefficient which often characterize microfading measurements of textiles. The methodology for sample preparation is evaluated and had been applied to samples from the Reformation Tapestry dating to 1667 from the collection of the Museum Europäischer Kulturen (Museum of European Cultures) in Berlin. Currently, we lack crucial knowledge on how the physicochemical properties of particles affect cellular health, resulting in an important gap in our understanding of the human toxicity of microplastics (MPs). Our aim was to evaluate the impact of the size and the shape of MPs on uptake and the intracellular effects in a human epithelial colorectal adenocarcinoma (Caco-2) cell line. Spherical (200 nm and 2 µm) and fibre-/fragment-shaped (8.9 ± 10.1 µm by 1.14 ± 0.97 µm) polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) were used to study their uptake and the potential to induce redox and mitochondrial stress responses after 24 h of exposure. We demonstrated the cellular uptake of both spherical and fibre-/fragment-shaped MPs in a size-dependent manner. In response to 2 µm spheres, we observed differential expressions of redox-related genes, including HMOX1, CAT, and GPX1. All PS-MPs decreased the intracellular H2O2 levels, which can be attributed to mitochondrial stress responses, such as increased mitochondrial DNA content, footprint, and morphology. Altogether, we demonstrated uptakes and changes in redox and mitochondrial parameters for all PS-MPs, with the 200 nm spheres showing the most profound effects. Researchers aim to produce sustainable insulation materials using lignocellulose fibres (natural plant fibres). Lignocellulose fibres are readily available, biodegradable, and low-cost materials for insulation. However, these materials are formulated as composites and not as fibres alone. Thus, the thermal properties of these composites depend on the volume fraction of each phase. The evaluation of thermal conductivity can be followed by experimental, analytical, and numerical methods. Numerical and analytical methods are convenient investigational methods; they are more cost-effective, have a higher degree of flexibility in design enhancement, and are faster methods of analysing results than the experimental method. The thermal conductivity value of each phase should be used to analyse the thermal properties of composite materials. However, there is no specific method to determine the thermal conductivity of natural fibres. Therefore, this work suggests a new method to find the thermal conductivity of coir fibres. The method follows the inverse calculation of the analytical methods to find the thermal conductivity of coir fibres, and the substitution values for the equations will be determined by an experimental method. The two-phase composite was fabricated by coir fibres and epoxy with different volume fractions. Next, the thermal conductivity was measured for the fabricated composite and epoxy using the hot disk method. Finally, the transverse thermal conductivity of the fibre was calculated using available analytical models namely, the Rule of mixture, Maxwell's model, Rayleigh's model, and the Lewis-Nielsen model. The thermal conductivity value determined was 0.3058 W/mK. The results were validated through numerical modelling. The thermal conductivity of fibres was determined using a binderless compacted fibre disk, and the obtained value was 0.2797 W/mK. Simple Summary: This study aimed to investigate how the growth and nutrient composition of black soldier fly larvae could differ based on the physical structure of the feed given to the larvae. The results show that manipulating only the physical properties of the substrate can change larval growth, survival rate, and body composition. These results can help optimise the substrate by modifying its physical properties. The growth and nutritional profile of the black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) is usually investigated and compared when the larvae feed on substrates that differ in the chemical composition as well as physical properties. This study compares BSFL growth on substrates that differ primarily in physical properties. This was achieved by using various fibres in the substrates. In the first experiment, two substrates with 20% or 14% chicken feed were mixed with three fibres (cellulose, lignocellulose, or straw). In the second experiment, the growth of BSFL was compared with a 17% chicken feed substrate that additionally contained straw with different particle sizes. We show that the substrate texture properties values did not influence the BSFL growth, but the bulk density of the fibre component did. The substrate mixed with cellulose led to higher larvae growth over time in comparison to substrates with higher bulk density fibres. BSFL grown on the substrate mixed with cellulose reached their maximum weight in 6 days instead of 7. Neither the fibres nor the nutrient level changed the crude protein content of BSFL and the values ranged between 33.5% and 38.3%, but an interaction between the fibre and nutrient level was observed. The size of straw particles in the substrates influenced the BSFL growth and led to a 26.78% difference in Ca concentration, a 12.04% difference in Mg concentration, and a 35.34% difference in P concentration. Our findings indicate that the BSFL-rearing substrates can be optimised by changing the fibre component or its particle size. This can improve the survival rate, reduce the cultivation time needed to reach the maximum weight, and alter the chemical composition of BSFL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Partially unmolded CFRP joints have shown the potential to improve the joining efficiency in adhesive joints. In this work, four different joints were investigated, namely, Original Laminated Joint (OLJ) where the mating parts form butt joints, Overlapped Joints, where mating parts overlapped with different lengths (e.g., 20 mm (O20) and 40 mm (O40)), and a specially designed Multiple-Covers Joint (MLJ). All joints were prepared using the Vacuum-Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) process. Tensile and bending specimens were prepared to evaluate the joint's mechanical performance. The O40 achieved the highest ultimate failure load, with a 56% increase over the OLJ specimens. It also achieved the highest bending strength and modulus compared to other joints and even the standard bending samples. The percentage increase in the strength for the proposed joints ranged from 58% to 68% over the OLJ samples. Fractography showed a delamination failure mode for the OLJ and O20 joints, while a mixture of delamination and fiber breakage failure modes was observed for the O40 and MLJ joints. Finite elements modeling (FEM) of the tensile tests were developed. The results showed good agreement with the experimental ones. Furthermore, FEM results clarified some of the experimental observations and the underlying failure mechanisms and damage propagation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
