Osteoporosis is a highly prevalent metabolic disease characterized by low systemic bone mass and deterioration of bone microarchitecture, resulting in reduced bone strength and increased fracture risk. Current treatment options for osteoporosis are limited by factors such as efficacy, cost, availability, side effects, and acceptability to patients. Gold nanoparticles show promise as an emerging osteoporosis therapy due to their osteogenic effects and ability to allow therapeutic delivery but have inherent constraints, such as low specificity and the potential for heavy metal accumulation in the body. This study reports the synthesis of ultrasmall gold particles almost reaching the Ångstrom (Ång) dimension. The antioxidant alpha-lipoic acid (LA) is used as a dispersant and stabilizer to coat Ångstrom-scale gold particles (AuÅPs). Alendronate (AL), an amino-bisphosphonate commonly used in drug therapy for osteoporosis, is conjugated through LA to the surface of AuÅPs, allowing targeted delivery to bone and enhancing antiresorptive therapeutic effects. In this study, alendronate-loaded Ångstrom-scale gold particles (AuÅPs-AL) were used for the first time to promote osteogenesis and alleviate bone loss through regulation of the WNT signaling pathway, as shown through in vitro tests. The in vivo therapeutic effects of AuÅPs-AL were demonstrated in an established osteoporosis mouse model. The results of Micro-computed Tomography, histology, and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase staining indicated that AuÅPs-AL significantly improved bone density and prevented bone loss, with no evidence of nanoparticle-associated toxicity. These findings suggest the possible future application of AuÅPs-AL in osteoporosis therapy and point to the potential of developing new approaches for treating metabolic bone diseases using Ångstrom-scale gold particles. Supercapacitors (SCs) have become increasingly important in electrical energy storage and delivery owing to their high power densities and long lifetimes. Aqueous SCs are promising for large-scale engineering applications because of their low cost and safety. However, the low operating voltage and low energy density of aqueous SCs severely limit their practical applications. In this study, a nanoscale dielectric layer is grafted onto a graphene electrode to achieve both a high operating voltage and enhanced capacitance. Compared with an SC without dielectric grafting, a dielectric-enhanced SC (DESC) shows a higher capacitance by 2200%. The mechanism of the capacitance enhancement can be attributed to three factors: the dielectric polarization, the ions desolvation by the dielectric, and the enhanced quantum capacitance from charge transfer and ion adsorption in the polymer molecules. In addition, a 2.5 V pouch DESC with a 1 M KCl electrolyte is confirmed to cycle up to 50,000 times with a capacitance retention of 87.5%. The DESC presents the optimal electrochemical properties after it is grafted with a 5 nm dielectric layer. Osteoporosis is currently the most prevalent bone disorder worldwide and is characterized by low bone mineral density and an overall increased risk of fractures. To treat osteoporosis, a range of drugs targeting bone homeostasis have emerged in clinical practice, including anti-osteoclast agents such as bisphosphonates and denosumab, bone formation stimulating agents such as teriparatide, and selective oestrogen receptor modulators. However, traditional clinical medicine still faces challenges related to side effects and high costs of these types of treatments. Nanomaterials (particularly gold nanoparticles [AuNPs]), which have unique optical properties and excellent biocompatibility, have gained attention in the field of osteoporosis research. AuNPs have been found to promote osteoblast differentiation, inhibit osteoclast formation, and block the differentiation of adipose-derived stem cells, which thus is believed to be a novel and promising candidate for osteoporosis treatment. This review summarizes the advances and drawbacks of AuNPs in their synthesis and the mechanisms in bone formation and resorption in vitro and in vivo, with a focus on their size, shape, and chemical composition as relevant parameters for the treatment of osteoporosis. Introduction: To date, there is no consensus on the optimal surgical strategy for the treatment of posterolateral tibial plateau fracture (PLF). This study introduced a novel, simple technique for treating PLF with a lateral locking plate plus antero-posterior lag screws (LPpLS). Methods: We conducted a retrospective case series of 42 patients (Female/Male 19/23) with PLF treated with LPpLS between 1 July 2016 and 30 June 2019. Several pre- and postoperative outcomes were recorded, including operative time, intraoperative blood loss, CT findings, HSS, and ROM. For biomechanical studies, seventy synthetic tibiae with a simulated posterolateral split fracture were divided into seven groups. The biomechanical evaluation included displacement measurement at axial compression and fatigue testing. Results: Forty-two eligible patients were followed up for an average of 18 months (range 14–21 months). Postoperative radiographs and CT showed good positioning of plates and screws, no fracture fragment loss, and normal articular surfaces in all 42 cases. The biomechanical study showed that the axial stiffness of LPpLS was in the same fashion as the posterior buttress plate and better than the other fixation methods (P < 0.05). Additionally, the LPpLS group had a smaller displacement of fracture fragments along the X-axis (medial to lateral direction) than the BP group (P < 0.01). Conclusions: The LPpLS technique could implement good reconstruction of the PLF, showing satisfactory therapeutic effect. The biomechanical evaluation demonstrated that the LPpLS had better stability in three-dimensional directions for PLF than other fixation strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, to effectively solve the joint motion planning of a nine-DOF redundant hybrid boarding system in the process of ocean wave active compensation, we present a multi-task motion planning (MTMP) method for the redundant hybrid boarding system. First, the hybrid mechanism is disassembled into a six-DOF parallel mechanism and a three-DOF serial mechanism for kinematic analysis separately to obtain the Jacobian matrix of the hybrid mechanism in the task space. Then, according to the configuration characteristics of the hybrid mechanism and to avoid the defects of the pseudo-inverse and weighted pseudo-inverse methods in motion planning, several secondary tasks are proposed to constrain the motion planning of the hybrid mechanism. Based on simulations and comparisons, the results show that the MTMP method solves the problems of joint limitation, reverse compensation, overlap compensation, and divergence with time in the motion planning of the pseudo-inverse method and the weighted pseudo-inverse method. Corrosion monitoring of steel bars has drawn extensive attention in recent decades. Conventional ultrasonic method, utilizing direct waves to detect damage, is adequate for severe pitting corrosion but suffers from low sensitivity to incipient pitting corrosion. Coda wave technique, a very sensitive method to subtle changes in medium using later arrival wave packets, is innovatively introduced to monitor pitting corrosion of steel bars, especially in the early stages. The decorrelation coefficient (DC) values are calculated to quantify the variations of both direct waves and coda waves. To overcome the limitations of coda waves for severe pitting corrosion and remedy the low sensitivity of direct waves for incipient pitting corrosion, a feature-level data fusion strategy is proposed to integrate the two probing waves to monitor all-stage pitting corrosion of steel bars. The combination of direct waves and coda waves could exploit the complementary merits in various pitting corrosion configurations. The proposed feature-level fusion strategy of ultrasonic coda waves and direct waves intercepted from the same recorded signals opens a new perspective in all-stage pitting corrosion monitoring of steel bars and contributes a novel scheme for whole-process damage evaluation of structures. In this article, a damage localization method in concrete materials based on time reversal theory and meso-scale finite element simulation considering random heterogeneous properties is developed. In this article, concrete is regarded as a multiphase composite material consisting of cement mortar matrix, coarse aggregates, and interface transition zones. Compared to other methods, which assume that concrete is homogeneous, the meso-scale model considers the intricacies of concrete inhomogeneity and can therefore better characterize the interaction between stress waves and internal structures of concrete material. Through the meso-scale method, acoustic phenomena including reflection, transmission, and diffraction among internal structures of concrete can be modeled. Furthermore, a novel time reversal based, damage imaging method is developed using the envelope of the refocused damage scattering signal to monitor the health condition of concrete. The scattered signal received by each sensor is time reversed and reemitted via numerical computation. To decrease the dispersion effect, the autocorrelation function of the refocused signals is computed to generate an image of the estimated damage. A time correction factor is introduced to decrease the influence of the elongated wave packet. Numerical and experimental results indicate that the proposed damage imaging method can locate damage with high spatial resolution in heterogeneous concrete material. Moreover, owing to the meso-scale modeling, the propagation of high-frequency stress waves in concrete can be analyzed more accurately. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: In this paper, a new time reversal imaging (TRI) algorithm with noise suppression is developed for the application of imaged based structural damage detection of plate‐like structures. The conventional TRI method suffers from performance degradation in high noise condition. The proposed method addresses the aforementioned issues. First, an array of detection transducers is used and is divided into several subgroups. Then, the echo signals of the subgroups are time reversed and reemitted via numerical computation. Finally, the cross‐correlation functions of the summation of refocused time reversed signals in each subgroup are obtained to locate damages. The time reversed signals at the reference time are irrelevant to the noise, meanwhile, the multiple refocused signals in each subgroup are first added and then cross‐correlated. Therefore, the proposed method can effectively suppress noise. To validate the effectiveness of proposed method, 2 experiments were performed. The 2 experiments involved 2 aluminum plate specimens. Each specimen was equipped with 4 surface‐bonded lead zirconate titanate transducers. One specimen involved a simulated damage (an addition of a mass), and the other one involved an actual through‐hole damage. The experimental performances of the proposed method are compared to those of the conventional TRI method. The imaging results demonstrated that the damage on both specimens was clearly displayed with high spatial resolution by the proposed method even under the low signal‐to‐noise ratio condition. Summary: Precast concrete wall has become a crucial part in the architectural industrialization, which is in line with the development trend of the building industry. On the basis of the analysis of relations between the deformation and the energy distribution of the precast concrete walls under major earthquakes, this investigation proposes the idea of a novel viscoelastic damped joint (VDJ) to create the vertical connection between two precast walls. By amplifying the displacements and velocities of the joint, the energy dissipating properties of damping materials can be fully used. The VDJ is suitable for improving the damping efficiency in the stiff shear wall structural systems. Performance tests were performed to study the mechanical properties of the damped joint. And then, a simplified analytical model of the VDJ with different parameters under various deformations and frequencies is presented. The numerical simulation results indicate that the simplified model is capable of capturing the main features of the VDJ. Furthermore, the analytical models on wall to wall connections were set up and incorporated into 2‐D numerical models. To better understand the damping performances of the VDJ, three models connected by emulating cast in situ joints, precast hinged joints, and viscoelastic damped joints were prepared by analyzing the time history of the overall structural response. Results show that the VDJs are effective in attenuating seismic response of the precast walls. They worked in the dissipation of approximately 90% of input earthquake energy. The highly efficient damped joints also reduce interstory displacements and upgrade the structural performance of buildings during seismic excitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to their multiple advantages, piezoceramic materials have been widely used in structural health monitoring (SHM). Piezoceramic patch-based smart aggregate (SA) and spherical piezoceramic-based smart aggregate (SSA) have been developed for damage detection of concrete structures. However, the stress waves generated by these two types of transducers are limited by their geometry and are unsuitable for use in two-dimensional concrete structures (e.g., shear walls, floors and cement concrete pavements). In this paper, a novel embeddable tubular smart aggregate (TSA) based on a piezoceramic tube was designed, fabricated and tested for use in two-dimensional (2D) structures. Due to its special geometry, radially uniform stress waves can be generated, and thus the TSA is suitable for damage detection in planar structures. The suitability of the transducer for use in structural health monitoring was investigated by characterizing the ability of the transducer to transmit and measure stress waves. Three experiments, including impedance analysis, time of arrival analysis and sweep frequency analysis, were conducted to test the proposed TSA.
