Differences in data size per class, also known as imbalanced data distribution, have become a common problem affecting data quality. Big Data scenarios pose a new challenge to traditional imbalanced classification algorithms, since they are not prepared to work with such amount of data. Split data strategies and lack of data in the minority class due to the use of MapReduce paradigm have posed new challenges for tackling the imbalance between classes in Big Data scenarios. Ensembles have been shown to be able to successfully address imbalanced data problems. Smart Data refers to data of enough quality to achieve high-performance models. The combination of ensembles and Smart Data, achieved through Big Data preprocessing, should be a great synergy. In this paper, we propose a novel Smart Data driven Decision Trees Ensemble methodology for addressing the imbalanced classification problem in Big Data domains, namely SD_DeTE methodology. This methodology is based on the learning of different decision trees using distributed quality data for the ensemble process. This quality data is achieved by fusing random discretization, principal components analysis, and clustering-based random oversampling for obtaining different Smart Data versions of the original data. Atrial fibrillation (AF) affects more than 30 million individuals worldwide, making it the most prevalent cardiac arrhythmia on a global scale. This systematic review summarizes recent advancements in applying artificial intelligence (AI) techniques for AF detection, prediction, and guiding treatment selection and risk stratification. In adherence with the PRISMA guidelines (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses), a total of 171 pertinent studies conducted between 2013 and 2023 were examined. Studies applying machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) to electrocardiogram (ECG), photoplethysmography (PPG), wearable data, and other sources were evaluated. For AF detection, most works employed DL (48 studies) and ML (28 studies) on ECG data. DL methods directly analyzed ECG waveforms and outperformed approaches relying on hand‐crafted features. For prediction and risk stratification, 22 studies used ML while 7 leveraged DL on ECG. An emerging trend showed the growing potential of PPG for AF screening. Overall, AI demonstrated promising capabilities across various AF‐related tasks. However, real‐world implementation faces challenges including a lack of interpretability, the need for multimodal data integration, prospective performance validation, and regulatory compliance. Future research directions involve quantifying model uncertainty, enhancing transparency, and conducting population‐based clinical trials to facilitate translation into practice. This paper presents, for the first time, a distance metric learning algorithm for monotonic classification. Monotonic datasets arise in many real-world applications, where there exist order relations in the input and output variables, and the outputs corresponding to ordered pairs of inputs are also expected to be ordered. Monotonic classification can be addressed through several distance-based classifiers that are able to respect the monotonicity constraints of the data. The performance of distance-based classifiers can be improved with the use of distance metric learning algorithms, which are able to find the distances that best represent the similarities among each pair of data samples. However, learning a distance for monotonic data has an additional drawback: the learned distance may negatively impact the monotonic constraints of the data. In our work, we propose a new model for learning distances that does not corrupt these constraints. This methodology will also be useful in identifying and discarding non-monotonic pairs of samples that may be present in the data due to noise. The experimental analysis conducted, supported by a Bayesian statistical testing, demonstrates that the distances obtained by the proposed method can enhance the performance of several distance-based classifiers in monotonic problems. In sentiment analysis of microblogs that involve social relationships, a common approach is to expand the features of target microblogs using microblog relationship networks. However, the current research methodology only relies on individual interaction behaviors on social platforms to construct these networks, disregarding the guiding influence of microblog relationship networks on microblogs. Consequently, this leads to the feature expansion of microblogs while introducing interference among them. To address this problem, this study aims to construct a more precise microblog relationship network by incorporating multiple interactive behaviors from social platforms. This network will serve as a guide for sentiment interactions among microblog texts, thereby mitigating feature interference. Firstly, we utilize various interaction behaviors on social platforms to build a microblog relationship network. We employ a LINE network embedding to represent the microblog relationship network as microblog relationship features. Secondly, we extract word-level and sentence-level features from the microblog text using a BERT pre-training model. The word-level features are combined using convolutional neural networks. Subsequently, the word-level and sentence-level features of microblogs are separately guided for interaction fusion through relational features. An attention network is then constructed to fuse the post-interaction features in a single step. Prior to secondary fusion, the primary fusion features, post-interaction word-level features, and post-interaction sentence-level features are weighted, and the sentiment categories of microblogs are outputted. Finally, we compare the proposed method with the text-only microblog sentiment analysis approach and the sentiment analysis method that incorporates social relationships on two real datasets. The fragmentation of the Spanish party system has led to a growing political polarization, particularly evident on the Internet. The discursive strategies of political actors online, combined with the particularities of communication on social media platforms such as the disinhibition effect, echo chambers, and filter bubbles, are likely to promote a state of tension among digital citizens. This tension is particularly pronounced in gender issues, which have become key positions of political parties, with convergence of sexism in the community and a highly reactive misogynistic online culture that turns female politicians into easy targets. Starting from the hashtag #IreneMonteroDimision, which conveys a paradigmatic criticism movement against the Spanish Minister of Equality, an analysis of the social conversation on Twitter is developed to determine its intentionality, tone, and orientation, as well as the themes and users that generated the most tension. In this way, multimodal content and discourse analysis is applied to the 418 tweets with the greatest interaction and explicitly directed at the minister. The hypothesis is that the criticism of Irene Montero goes beyond the management of her Ministry to place her at the center of a power struggle in which political ideology, hate speech, and antifeminism converge. The study has shown that attacks on Montero extend to the Executive and the feminist movement; they are promoted by a mass of politicized and polarized profiles, with constant activism and a tendency towards contagious replication of messages. These practices, as well as the participation of artificial profiles, allow us to appreciate signs of astroturfing; behind this seemingly natural critical reaction, there are orchestrated movements of antifeminist and far-right profiles (gender trolling), but also of trans-exclusionary feminists opposed to legislation promoted by Montero. In a context of permanent electoral campaign, an increasing number of political communication specialists are trying to unravel the resources with which government officials and their parties seek to influence TikTok users. From a broad perspective, the theme is more current than novel, however, in the specific case of this research, an academic void is identified by combining the identification of idiosyncratic traits of the feminization of political discourse in TikTok with the study of reactions (text and emojis) that audiovisual content imbued with this trend provokes in users. The intention is to find out whether the inclusive tone of the feminized rhetorical style can be extrapolated to the Chinese-origin social network and, if so, whether its particular characteristics mitigate forms of incivility. To carry out the checks, the first seven months of activity on TikTok by the political platform Sumar with its leader, Yolanda Díaz, as the protagonist of most of the videos, are selected. The mixed methodology of analysis on audiovisual content and comments allows to verify that, although the new Spanish party does not apply a strategy perfectly adapted to the social network under study, the anti-polarization rhetoric and the storytelling techniques manage to neutralize extreme forms of flaming. Objective is to compare the cost-effectiveness of a PI with that of pPCI for the treatment of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in a Latin-American country.Patients and Methods: A total of 1747 patients were included, of whom 470 (26.9%) received PI, 433 (24.7%) pPCI, and 844 (48.3%) NR. The study's primary outcome was the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) for PI compared with those for pPCI and non-reperfused (NR), calculated for 30-day major cardiovascular events (MACE), 30-day mortality, and length of stay.Results: For PI, the ICER estimates for MACE showed a decrease of $– 35.81/per 1% (95 confidence interval, – 114.73 to 64.81) compared with pPCI and a decrease of $– 271.60/per 1% (95% CI, – 1086.10 to – 144.93) compared with NR. Also, in mortality, PI had an ICER decrease of $– 129.50 (95% CI, – 810.57, 455.06) compared to pPCI and $– 165.27 (– 224.06, – 123.52) with NR. Finally, length of stay had an ICER reduction of − 765.99 (− 4020.68, 3141.65) and − 283.40 (− 304.95, − 252.76) compared to pPCI and NR, respectively.Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that PI may be a more efficient treatment approach for STEMI in regions where access to pPCI is limited or where patient and system delays are expected. Previous works reveal that there is potential in the use of mobile devices as a useful tool to help learn new vocabulary and it allows the learning materials can be displayed with different Learning Content Representation (LCR) types. Nevertheless, there are no conclusive results about which LCR type is better to improve L2 vocabulary acquisition using m-learning. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of improving the students' academic performance using two LCR types that promote different learning strategies in a vocabulary learning task. A mobile application with two LCR types was implemented and tested: the SRL type based on a self-regulated learning strategy, and the NSRL type based on a non-self-regulated learning strategy. Quantitative analyses indicated that there is a relationship between the LCR types and the word recall on vocabulary learning. The SRL type seems to be effective in improving the students' learning abilities and students in this experimental group exhibited significantly better academic performance. The results are meant to draw that LCR-SRL types must be used in m-learning to L2 vocabulary acquisition. Future studies should focus on how to integrate these strategies in m-learning and understand their effects on improving students' vocabulary acquisition. Plain Language Summary: Exploring mobile learning approaches for better second language vocabulary learning Mobile devices have emerged as promising tools for facilitating vocabulary learning, offering the flexibility to present learning materials in various formats known as Learning Content Representation (LCR) types. However, the question of which LCR type is most effective in enhancing L2 vocabulary acquisition in mobile learning remains unanswered. This study aimed to investigate the influence of two distinct LCR types, each promoting different learning strategies, on students' academic performance in vocabulary learning tasks. To accomplish this, a mobile application featuring two LCR types was developed and tested. The first LCR type, Self-Regulated Learning (SRL), encouraged learners to employ self-regulation strategies, while the second LCR type, Non-Self-Regulated Learning (NSRL), guided learners through a non-self-regulated approach. Quantitative analyses of the data revealed a significant relationship between LCR types and word recall in vocabulary learning. Notably, the SRL-based LCR type demonstrated effectiveness in improving students' word recall abilities, resulting in significantly better academic performance for the experimental group. These findings emphasize the importance of incorporating LCR-SRL types in mobile learning environments to enhance L2 vocabulary acquisition. Future research should delve deeper into the integration of these strategies within mobile learning platforms and explore their broader impact on students' vocabulary acquisition. There is the notion that dysregulation of executive function (EF), which disrupts behavior and cognitive processes, may explain the emotional impairment which leads to increasing sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) intake. We aimed to test whether anxiety and depression mediate the association between self-reported problems in EF and sugar sweetened beverage intake in Mexican adults between 18-40 years. An open survey advertised as a 'mental health and sugar sweetened beverages study' was conducted, participants were recruited through Facebook ads. Males and females, between 18-40 years, able to read and write, and currently residing in Mexico were included. We analyzed data using causal mediation analysis with latent variables using a structural equation modelling framework. Significant indirect effects were found for somatic symptoms of depression (ß = 6.601, SE = 2.657, p < .05) and anxiety (ß = .679, SE =.334, p < .05). In depression model no significant direct effects of EF were found in the depression model, however they were found in the anxiety model (ß = 1.335 SE =.566, p < .05). Somatic symptoms of depression were a total mediator, and anxiety a partial mediator. The results suggest that EF increased the probability of emotional symptoms, which led to a higher consumption of SBBs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Efficiently modeling thin features using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method involves a considerable reduction in the spatial mesh size. However, in real-world scenarios, such reductions can lead to unaffordable memory and CPU requirements. In this manuscript, we present two stable and efficient techniques in FDTD to handle narrow apertures on conductive thin panels. One technique employs conformal methods, while the other utilizes subgridding methods. We validate their performance compared to the classical Gilbert-Holland model and present experimental results in reverberation environments to shed light on these models' actual confidence margins in real electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) scenarios. Background: Primary Health Care nurses express deficits in their training in Palliative Care. The purpose of this study is to design a Palliative Care training plan and a bereavement care protocol for Primary Health Care nurses of the Dr. Peset Health Department according to their needs. Methods: Assessment of theoretical and practical training needs and literature review for the design of the training plan. Results: A training plan was elaborated that included a protocol of care for the bereaved. The plan was adjusted to the needs detected in Primary Health Care nurses of the Dr. Peset Health Department. Important training deficits were detected in clinical practice; Conclusions: Improving the care of people with palliative needs in Primary Health Care requires adequate training of the nurses who care for them so their knowledge is the basis of their interventions. This study explores the way mass-media outlets make use of digital games to convey journalistic messages. Newsgames have been defined by several scholars in the intersection between digital journalism and game studies. However, because of the heterogeneity of this phenomenon, there is still a lack of clarity of what could be considered, or not, a newsgame. This study aims to shed light into this question by exploring how newsgames are used in practice by journalists. We therefore approach the understanding of this phenomenon from a bottom-up perspective to give an answer to the following research question: How are journalistic messages structured within newsgames published by online mass-media outlets? A grounded theory approach is used to analyze 75 games published in a total of 47 mass-media digital outlets from 17 countries. People with comorbidities and the male sex are at a higher risk of developing severe COVID-19. In the present study, we aim to investigate the associated factors for infection, severity, and death due to COVID-19 in a population from Nuevo León, México. Epidemiological COVID-19 data were collected from 65 hospitals from December 2020 to May 2022. A total of 75,232 cases were compiled from which 25,722 cases were positive for SARS-CoV-2. Male sex, older age, diabetes, obesity, and hypertension were associated with infection. In addition to the above-mentioned factors, renal disease, cardiovascular disease, and immunosuppression were found to be associated with increased COVID-19 severity. These factors, as well as neurological diseases, are also associated with death due to COVID-19. When comparing the different variants of SARs-CoV-2, the variant B1.1.519 increased the probability of death by 2.23 times compared to the AY.20 variant. Male sex, older age, diabetes, obesity, and hypertension are associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection, severity, and death. Along with the aforementioned comorbidities, renal disease, cardiovascular disease, and immunosuppression are also associated with severity and death. Another factor associated with death is the presence of neurological disease. The SARS-CoV-2 B1.1.519 variant increases the odds of death compared to the SARS-CoV-2 AY.20 variant. Knowledge of the value generated within higher education institutions is of great interest for various agents, particularly managers, as well as governments and society. University mission statements and their scope complicate any comparable measurement of the effects each university may have within a particular region. Perhaps the most adequate term for it and one that includes simple economic impact is value. This study is centered on the estimation of the short-term economic impact of the University of Granada (UGR). Using a method based on the input–output framework and multipliers, the total (direct, indirect, and induced) effects of UGR on production, income, and employment are quantified, differentiating between economic sectors. The total economic impact of UGR is 3.2 times the expenditure of the agents linked to the activities of the university, which implies that each Euro that the government invested was converted into 7.1 Euros. Its effect on total production surpassed two-thousand million Euros, with an income of one-thousand million Euros and over 25,000 equivalent jobs. Quantification of the impact is a measure of the importance of UGR within the province of Granada and the performance of public-sector investment in higher education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many real-world datasets exhibit imbalanced distributions, in which the majority classes have sufficient samples, whereas the minority classes often have a very small number of samples. Data resampling has proven to be effective in alleviating such imbalanced settings, while feature selection is a commonly used technique for improving classification performance. However, the joint impact of feature selection and data resampling on two-class imbalance classification has rarely been addressed before. This work investigates the performance of two opposite imbalanced classification frameworks in which feature selection is applied before or after data resampling. We conduct a large-scale empirical study with a total of 9225 experiments on 52 publicly available datasets. The results show that both frameworks should be considered for finding the best performing imbalanced classification model. We also study the impact of classifiers, the ratio between the number of majority and minority samples (IR), and the ratio between the number of samples and features (SFR) on the performance of imbalance classification. In recent years, MOOCs have become firmly established as valid e-learning environments and, as such, have been developed by many universities using different types of platform. Given the voluntary nature of MOOC enrollment, motivation is crucial to our understanding of why students register for and complete these courses. The present study explores the motivations that characterize MOOC participants and how they relate to technology acceptance variables (data collected via questionnaires) and participation variables (observational data collected via the platform). Our results indicate that students show exceptionally high levels of intrinsic motivation. However, extrinsic motivation also plays a relevant role, suggesting that the two are not mutually exclusive. Although only intrinsic motivation appears to be systematically associated with differences in technology acceptance, both are associated with differences in participation, but in contrasting ways. Our results provide insights that will enable us to improve MOOC design in order to enhance participant satisfaction, particularly when different sources of motivation are involved. Purpose. The purpose of this study is to examine the internal consistency of wine guides by comparing the judgements of expert wine tasters and reviewers. A classifi cation of wines is provided to establish whether expert reviews of similar wines are coherent. Design/methodology/approach. Sentiment analysis based on natural language processing techniques was used to compare quantitative and qualitative reviews between experts. In addition, a finite mixture model was used to classify wines into categories to analyse internal consistency between ratings. Findings. The results for a sample of more than 200,000 Wine Enthusiast ratings reveal significant differences between expert reviews. This finding indicates that there are no standard criteria for reviewing wines included in the guide. Originality. Wine guides are amongst the most widely used marketing resources in the wine industry. They provide a signal to consumers about the quality of wines, guiding their purchase decisions. They also influence the reputation of brands and the performance of companies producing these wines. Background : Burns are one of the most common causes of mortality and morbidity among children. This study aims to assess the epidemiology of pediatric major burns in a third level hospital in Spain to evaluate demographics, etiology, and outcomes. Methods: A retrospective study was held by the Plastic, Reconstructive and Burn Surgery department of the hospital. We included 147 patients under 18 admitted to hospital between January 2008 and December 2020 who meet the inclusion criteria: partial thickness burns > 10% total body surface area (TBSA) in patients < 18 years old. Clinical data extracted included age, gender, date of admission, %TBSA, burn types, severity and sites of burn, length of stay, length of ventilator support, intensive care admission, blood transfusion, surgical interventions, and complications. Results: Three groups of age were analyzed. The average %TBSA was 18.7 (SE 0.9). Scalds were the main mechanism of injury (70.1%) and upper extremity was the most frequent location affected (68%). The 28.6% of patients suffered some complication, but the mortality rate was low (0.7%). In our series, the group aged 13–18 showed significantly higher %TBSA, more number of surgeries and blood transfusions. Conclusions: Scald burns are the most frequent mechanism of injury in pediatric burns. However, teenagers suffer more severe burns and complications, usually caused by flame. Background: The Burn Specific Health Scale-Brief (BSHS-B) is considered a validated questionnaire to evaluate quality of life after burn. The purpose of this study was to translate the BSHS-B into Spanish and perform its cross-cultural adaptation. Methods: First, BSHS-B was translated from English into Spanish. Subsequently, 84 patients answered the Spanish version of BSHS-B and SF-36 scales to assess the reliability (Cronbach's alpha), construct validity (Spearman rank test), and stability in time (intra-class correlation coefficient). Results: The BSHS-B-Sp showed a good internal consistency with a global Cronbach's alpha of 0.96. Correlations between the major domains of BSHS-B and SF-36 are reported with Spearman's coefficient ranging from 0.29 to 0.87 in all sub-domains (p < 0.01). Stability in time was confirmed by intra-class correlation coefficient (0.91–0.99 for every sub-domain and 0.98 for global score, p < 0.001). Introduction: The optimal anti-thrombotic therapy to prevent recurrent ischemic events in patients with acute coronary syndrome and coronary artery ectasia (CAE) remains unclear. Aim: To assess the efficacy and safety of antiplatelet plus anticoagulant therapy versus dual antiplatelet therapy in patients with acute coronary syndromes and coronary artery ectasia. Methods: OVER-TIME is an investigator initiated, exploratory, open label, single center, randomized clinical trial comparing dual antiplatelet therapy (acetyl-salicylic acid plus a P2Y12 inhibitor) with the combination of an antiplatelet monotherapy (a P2Y12 inhibitor) plus a low dose anticoagulant (rivaroxaban, 15mg oral dose) for the prevention of recurrent ischemic events among patients with CAE. We aim to enroll approximately 60 patients with CAE and acute coronary syndromes. After recruitment, patients are randomized to (a) standard of care (dual antiplatelet regimen) or (b) the combination of antiplatelet monotherapy and low dose anticoagulant. Patients will be followed for at least 12 months. The OVER-TIME study aims to assess the efficacy of the regimen in prevention of major cardiovascular events and its security in bleeding events in acute coronary syndromes among patients with CAE. Expected results and conclusions: OVER-TIME is the first randomized controlled trial to assess different antithrombotic strategies in patients with CAE and acute coronary syndrome, and its results will offer preliminary data for the prevention of major cardiovascular events and bleeding events in this group of patients. Loyalty – users' commitment to an institution or resource, involving its repeated use and recommending its use to others – and its explaining factors are of paramount importance in a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), where participation is open and many actors with differing interests coexist. The present article tests a loyalty formation model by using satisfaction, flow state and reputation as explanatory factors. It also examines the role of extrinsic motivation (EM) as a potential moderator of inter-variable relationships. Data were gathered from questionnaires distributed to users of a MOOC offered by the University of Granada (Spain). Results indicate that EM plays an important moderating role in loyalty formation. Satisfaction, enjoyment and reputation are less important when EM is higher, whilst control appears to be more relevant to externally driven users. Aims: The Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) shock stages have been applied and validated in high-income countries with access to advanced therapies. We applied the SCAI scheme at the time of admission in order to improve the risk stratification for 30-day mortality in a retrospective cohort of patients with STEMI in a middle-income country hospital at admission. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study, we analyzed 7,143 ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients. At admission, patients were stratified by the SCAI shock stages. Multivariate analysis was used to assess the association between SCAI shock stages to 30-day mortality. Results: The distribution of the patients across SCAI shock stages was 82.2%, 9.3%, 1.2%, 1.5%, and 0.8% to A, B, C, D, and E, respectively. Patients with SCAI stages C, D, and E were more likely to have high-risk features. There was a stepwise significant increase in unadjusted 30-day mortality across the SCAI shock stages (6.3%, 8.4%, 62.4%, 75.2% and 88.3% for A, B, C, D and E, respectively; P < 0.0001, C-statistic, 0.64). A trend toward a lower 30-day survival probability was observed in the patients with advanced CS (30.3, 15.4%, and 8.3%, SCAI shock stages C, D, and E, respectively, Log-rank P-value <0.0001). After multivariable adjustment, SCAI shock stages C, D, and E were independently associated with an increased risk of 30-day death (hazard ratio 1.42 [P = 0.02], 2.30 [P<0.0001], and 3.44 [P<0.0001], respectively). Conclusion: The SCAI shock stages applied in patients con STEMI at the time of admission, is a useful tool for risk stratification in patients across the full spectrum of CS and is a predictor of 30-day mortality. Featured Application: Generation of a Dynamic Innovation Information System (DIIS) for optimized planning and decision-making thanks to the dynamic evaluation of innovations over their life cycle, applying a methodology for Digital Ecosystems in the Fourth Industrial Revolution and an innovation management model based on the Viable System Model. Innovations are essential for global development and market dynamics. Innovation management is central to organizations for gaining adaptability and dynamic capabilities to ensure their sustainability over time. Right decisions are essential for the implementation of innovations. However, on many occasions, especially in the product development process, decisions are taken based on static analysis, qualitative criteria, questionnaires, and/or quantitative evaluations that are outdated. Moreover, many innovation developments do not consider the existing databases in their information systems of similar innovation projects, especially in the early phases of new innovations when evaluations are mainly driven by area, group, or person. Furthermore, inventions are introduced in different regions, plants, and socio-economic situations, providing different results. In this context, considering that innovations shape our current and future world, including all products and services, as well as how humans, organizations, and machines interact, the significance of the paper is clear. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an innovation management model based on the Viable System Model to cope with any potential future environment based on internal organizational capabilities. For this purpose, the paper designs a Digital Ecosystem for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (DE4.0) based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act methodology applicable to any information system consisting of a digital twin, a simulation model, databases from existing information systems, and quality management techniques. This DE4.0 provides a huge advantage for the applicability and scalability of innovations as it allows one to plan, monitor, assess, and improve. Moreover, based on the conceptual model, a generic project evaluation scheme is developed, providing a platform for innovation project management and control during the whole innovation life cycle. As a result, the research provides a scientific and practical contribution for an integrated management of innovations based on the best information and set of techniques available. Based on this framework, a supply-chain case study is developed. The results show how, depending on the intended goals, the past experiences, the evolution of the innovation, and the innovation scope, indicators can be influenced towards reaching the initial goals and reducing the innovation risks. Featured Application: Model for designing and implementing self-protection plans for public buildings. Adaptability of self-protection plans for elderly residences. COVID-19 is reflecting the importance of self-protection plans in nursing homes, especially when it concerns persons of older age. Self-protection plans intend to prevent and control the risks of residential buildings. The goal of this research is to develop a design process for self-protection plans of public buildings, and specifically a nursing home. In this regard, it is key for the viability of the nursing home operations to be capable of adapting to any potential future event. Starting from some initial hypotheses that establish the need for adaptability, a self-protection plan model is developed for public buildings based on a new approach consisting of four elements and three steps. It was applied to an elderly residence which is currently under construction. The methodology followed has consisted of a process by stages, to design and implement a novel self-protection plan for public buildings. Subsequently, it has been applied to the specific case study, using the most common tools and applications available for later analysis of the result obtained with the starting hypotheses. The results show how the research allows an increase in the adaptability of self-protection plans for any publicly owned building, although there is an extensive and precise subsequent work of adaptation to specific cases considering the different legal frameworks which makes the work challenging. Finally, the research on adaptability and its application for elderly residences enabled the derivation of recommendations regarding self-protection plans in general and specifically in homes for the elderly. This article explores the process carried out by Spain's state radio station -Radio Nacional de España- to devise the figure of Francisco Franco, first as a war hero, supreme chief of the rebel side of Spanish Civil War and, after the conflict ended, as a statesman and rebuilder of the Spanish nation, in his roles as head of state and Caudillo de España (leader of Spain). Through the examination of materials from newspapers, magazines, sound archives, censored scripts and administrative documentation, this research focuses on the capacity of state radio to adapt its discourse to convey the figure of a 'charismatic' ruler that satisfies the needs of the Francoist regime to survive and legitimize itself. The article shows how state radio constructs a discourse around Franco arranged to the different speeds of the national and international political context that shook Spain, Europe and the occidental world from 1937 to 1961. Objectives: The purpose of this exploratory non-randomized controlled study was to determine the acceptance and effectiveness of an 8-week mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) co-designed by a police officer. Methods: A pretest-posttest control group design was followed. Participants (MBI group = 20; control group = 18) answered baseline and post-training self-reported measures. In addition, the weekly emotional state of the MBI group was collected. Paired-samples t-test and analysis of covariance were performed for pre-post within-group and between-group differences, respectively, as well as linear mixed effects analysis of repeated measures for week-by-week data. Results: High acceptance and attendance rates, as well as significant pre-post within-group differences in the MBI group in mindfulness (η2 = 0.43), self-compassion (η2 = 0.43), depression (η2 = 0.54), anxiety (η2 = 0.46), stress (η2 = 0.51), difficulties in emotion regulation, sleep quality (η2 = 0.57), and burnout (η2 = 0.31–0.47), were identified. Moreover, police officers who underwent the MBI experienced a week by week decrease of anger, disgust, anxiety, sadness, and desire. Finally, after adjusting for pre-test scores, significant between-group differences were found in the way of attending to internal and external experiences (observing mindfulness facet; ηp2 = 0.21), depression symptoms (ηp2 = 0.23), general distress (ηp2 = 0.24), and the degree of physical and psychological exhaustion (personal burnout; ηp2 = 0.20). Conclusions: The preliminary effectiveness of this MBI on psychopathology and quality of life outcomes in Spanish police officers was discussed. The late incorporation of Spain into the international circuit for the publication of results of scientific research in Communication has not proved to be an obstacle to reaching a level similar to international research in this discipline recently. However, this development is still subject to some obstacles. In this study, we carried out co-word and cocitation analyses of the intellectual and thematic structure of articles published by researchers affiliated with Spanish centers in journals indexed in the Communication category in Scopus and published between 1980 and 2020 (n = 7,422). This enables an analysis of the intellectual and thematic structure of Communication studies between 1980 and 2020 and its evolution. The aim is to contextualize this process, in a broad sense, thus establishing the similarities to and differences from European (n = 33,615) and Latin American (n = 5,160) Communication research during the same period. The results reveal a homogenization of the research interests between Spanish academics and their European counterparts during the last decade, with an emphasis on digital technologies and social networks. The first prominent studies in Spanish research have also appeared, albeit not yet becoming established as such on the international stage during the last decade. It is concluded that Spanish Communication research has developed around Journalism while the other classic disciplines (Audiovisual Communication, and Advertising and Public Relations) have not managed to consolidate a coherent and cohesive thematic and intellectual community to date, mainly due to their greater heterogeneity.
